New suburb set to expand Shepparton by 1,500 dwellings THERE’S no denying Shepparton is a beacon of activity at the moment. New developments and infrastructure are popping up across the city constantly to welcome and support the large numbers of people flocking to our region.

Protesters call to pause the plan OVER one hundred passionate parents, children and community members took to the streets on Friday in protest of the transition phase of the Shepparton Education Plan and the forthcoming Greater Shepparton College (interim name).

It was the second time a rally has been called to stop the new school, with the previous ‘Save Our Schools’ protest on June 28.

On Friday, frustrated protesters marched to the cry of ‘We’re no fools, save our schools!’ and ‘What’s our mission, stop transition!’

The march commenced at Independent Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed’s office, continuing along Wyndham Street disrupting traffic, before concluding for speeches at Queens Gardens.

The group were marching in protest of the controversial education plan that will see the merger of four secondary schools – Shepparton High School, Wanganui Park Secondary College, Mooroopna Secondary College and McGuire College – into a new school, Greater Shepparton College (interim name).

Although the Victorian Government has already approved the project, rally organiser Robyn Boschetti said the group would continue to protest until the very first brick is laid.

“I have written to the Minister for Education, James Merlino to convey the community’s concerns that were identified at our public meeting,” she said. “To inform him of the motion that was passed to pause

this transition phase and conduct proper consultation with the community. But he failed to respond to my letter.”

During her speech, M rs Boschetti noted that she had also writ ten to Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews and the Independent Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed, who was notably absent from the rally.

The Shadow Minister for Education, Cindy McLeish attended the rally, along with the Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, who was applauded for her attendance.

Speaking to the crowd, Wendy Lovell said,

“I have heard your concerns and conveyed them to government in the strongest possible terms. We continue to represent the views of this community in parliament and it is a pity that others who are elected to represent you have not listened to you.

“Suzanna Sheed, James Merlino and Daniel Andrews are refusing to listen to your long list of concerns and I fear that your concerns are just the tip of the iceberg.”

Organisers for the rally said that the next protest against Shepparton’s new school would take place in Melbourne, with protesters planning to march to parliament steps.

Fresh bans ahead of threatening fire season CAMPERS looking to take advantage of the warmer weather and daylight savings are being urged to recognise the solid fuel fires ban in all Riverina and Western State Forests, which commenced at the beginning of October 2019.

All campfires and barbecues using wood, charcoal or other solid fuels are banned in state forests in the Riverina, Western Plains, North Coast, Northern Tablelands and Central West Tablelands to reduce the risk of bushfires.

Forestry Corporation NSW district manager, Andrew McCurdy said campers should plan to bring and use gas stoves until further notice.

“This ban applies every day, not just on days when total fire bans are declared, so we are asking people who are planning to camp in the forests over the coming holidays to plan ahead and bring gas appliances.

“Visitors should also be prepared for days when total fire bands are declared by the Rural Fire Service, as all fires including gas fires are prohibited on total fire ban days,” Mr McCurdy said.

Forest visitors are encouraged to always get the latest information on total fire bans from the Rural Fire Service website: www. forestrycorporation.com.au. Failure to comply with the solid fuel fire ban carries a maximum penalty of $2,200.

“State forests are popular with campers and visitors year-round and while we encourage people to get out into our forests and enjoy them, we do need to act to reduce the bushfire risk during the high fire danger period,” Mr McCurdy added.

“Escaped campfires are a significant risk and can quickly turn into wildfires so solid fuel bans are an important tool we use each year to limit the risk of destructive fires.”

The warning comes as parts of Victoria are facing the worst bushfire conditions since Black Saturday left 173 people dead just under a decade ago, with years of low rainfall turning huge swaths of the state into a tinderbox.

Ladies auxiliary raises $11,000 for GV Health SET a group of Australian ladies to a task and they never cease to amaze. Take for example the ladies from GV Health Extended Care Auxiliary who over the past year, have put on a number of movie fundraising events and along with some donations, raised $11,000. With the money, they have been able to purchase a couple of specialist wheelchairs for use in the Mary Coram Unit at GV Health.

The first is a Rollee electric bariatric chair, capable of accommodating patients up to 350kg at a cost of $8,000, the other

is space-tilt chair that helps alleviate any pressures on a patient being transported at a cost over $2,000.

GV Health Extended Care Auxiliary president, Heather Lloyd said, “We are 16 ladies, mostly seniors, who hold film days to raise money. Our next film on Thursday October 10, which will be Downton Abbey.”

Survey on local labour shortages and migrant program solutions GREATER Shepparton is a lucky region built by the skilled hands of workers from across the globe. Over the years, migrant programs have proved beneficial to strengthening the local economy and ensuring the continued growth of business and industry.

Currently, Greater Shepparton City Council, Moira Shire and Campaspe Shire are releasing a survey to ascertain the requirement in our region for Designated Area Migrant Agreement (DAMA).

The councils are keen to survey all businesses in the municipal regions to

determine labour market shortages in the combined area. The aim of the survey is to obtain information as to what migrant programs are currently being utilised by businesses and why they may or may not be fulfilling their labour requirements.

Greater Shepparton City Council CEO, Peter Harriott said the new survey will help form the basis for the potential for a DAMA in our region, should the need be demonstrated.

A DAMA sees a certain number of migrants able to work full time in our region for a certain period with the ability

to apply for permanent residency after four years, at the earliest.

“The enables migrants to establish t hemselves w it h i n ou r reg ions a nd become part of our community providing employees for roles previously unable to be filled long term by Australian citizens,” Mr Harriott said.

The survey provides information on key aspects of this potential agreement between our regions and the Federal Government such as minimum pay rates, skills requirements, English Language Testing and concessions for migrants.

Snakes are on the move Riverside Plaza are celebrating 10 years AS WE move out of the cold winter months into summer, snakes are coming out of their winter hibernation to bask in the sun and search for food and a mate.

With the recent sunny weather meaning more people are spending time outdoors, you may encounter a snake.

The three most common snakes in this area are the eastern brown snake, tiger snakes and red belly black snakes. All are highly venomous but it is rare they will bite people unless they try to catch or kill them.

Just last week while out jogging on his lunch break, Mathieu Ryan from The Adviser spotted a brown snake slithering across the walking track behind the Water Transfer Station on Welsford Street.

Please remember, if you see a snake, keep calm and move away from the area. Don’t attempt to capture or harm a snake, call 136 186 for advice or call a licensed snake catcher. Learn how to deal with a snake bite and if bitten, call 000 immediately.

Snakes play an important role in our natural ecosystem and they are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to kill or harm them.

Foundation funds community initiatives EIGHTEEN not-for-profit community-based groups and projects have received a share in more than $103,000 in grants from Greater Shepparton Foundation. The philanthropic organisation hosted an awards evening last week to recognise the recipients.

Grants were awarded to: Ganbina, Goulburn Valley Gamers Guild, St Georges Road Primary School hub, Mercy Place Ave Maria, Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre, Moyola Aged Care Inc., St Alban’s Anglican Church, St Andrew’s Anglican Church, St Mel’s Primary School, Shepparton Foodshare, South Shepparton Community Church, Southern Cross Kids’ Camps, Tallygaroopna Men’s Shed, Wellways Australia, Careers Day Out Committee, Goulburn Valley Chinese Association, Shepparton East Primary School and Verney Road School.

The recent grants range between $1,500 and $10,000 and will help inject muchneeded resources to groups who do not receive any funding from government, or others, and/or groups with a limited capacity to fundraise themselves.

Southern Cross Kids Camps received $10,000 to go towards a five-day camp for 24 vulnerable children who may never get to experience a holiday where positive memories are made.

Camp co-ordinator, Anna Reid said, “This funding enables us to offer kids suffering from domestic violence or other forms of abuse some one-on-one care and

“Our assessment process is a rigorous one as it is import the funds we award have every

chance of making a positive impact in the wider community,” Mr Smith said.

“What we have learned from the awards’ night is the importance of volunteers and the contribution they make to our community and the people they look after.”

Much-needed drought relief for farmers AUSTRALIA is continuing to live through one of the worst droughts in our history. Between the years 2003 and 2012, many regions in Australia were in a significant drought and since 2017, severe drought has developed again across eastern and inland parts of Australia.

As such, the Victorian State Government just last week announced drought relief funding to help farming families and communities doing it rough. The $31.6 million package will support farmers in areas hardest hit by dry conditions, particularly the Millewa region, East and Central Gippsland and the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMID).

A $15 million Farmers’ Drought Fund will be established to help farming businesses and families that need it most, alleviating some of the immediate burden. The fund will provide household financial relief for families in the regions hit hard by drought, with $3 million allocated to deliver hardship payments of up to $3,000 per family.

The package also includes $2.3 million in farm business management and planning support, as well as a $4.6 million boost to fully roll-out the Catchment Management Drought Employment Program in the Millewa and GMID regions, giving farmers and their employees access to off-farm employment and training.

Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews said, “This won’t make it rain, but it will help make life a little easier for farming families doing it tough.

“At the same time, we know it’s not enough to provide immediate hardship payments and consider the job done. That’s why we’re investing in equipment upgrades, new infrastructure and training to help our farmers long-term.”

A safe way to remove chemical waste GREATER Shepparton residents are being urged to ‘Detox your Home’ – a safe, free and easy-to-use service to dispose of common, toxic household chemicals without harming your health or the environment.

T he household chemical collection program is coming to the Shepparton Resource Recovery Centre on Saturday, October 12. The event will run from 9am to 3pm and Greater Shepparton City Council in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is encouraging residents to take the opportunity to get rid of unwanted – and potentially dangerous – items like pesticides, detergents and weed killers.

Free financial wellbeing event EVERY year, hundreds of thousands of people access financial assistance from the Salvation Army, with more than 15,000 receiving financial counselling in 2018 alone.

As part of ‘Anti-Poverty Week 2019’, the Salvation Army’s MoneyCare financial counselling and capability service is holding a free information day to help people on the road to financial wellbeing.

Anyone interested or needing help managing their finances are invited to attend the local session at Salvation Army Corp, 99 Nixon Street, Shepparton, from 10am-3pm on Tuesday, October 15.

Shepparton is beginning to hit its straps WHILE Australia comes in at number 3, the most liveable country in the world and Melbourne is regularly the most liveable city, Shepparton can be pleased that it ranks high when compared against the rest of Australia as the 14th most liveable region.

While it ranked above average in most of the characteristics, it fell behind on matters of safety, highquality health services and prosperous economy.

Health services are one area that is soon to change, with stage two of the hospital soon to be completed and the new GenesisCare oncology clinic to be opened this year.

The economy is one area that presents contradictions.

While many general industries, particularly the construction sector are booming, those associated with the agricultural sector are beginning to feel the flow-on effects that the water crisis is presenting it with.

Generous donation helps community house NEIGHBOURHOOD houses bring people together to connect, learn and contribute in their local community through social, educational, recreational and support activities, using a unique community development approach.

Community development is about enabling communities to identify and address their own needs. It starts from the assumption that communities have existing strengths and assets that make them part of the solution. Community development practice is about doing with, rather than doing for.

There are over 400 neighbourhood houses in Victoria, and several in the Greater Shepparton area. Last week,

South Shepparton Community Centre received a generous donation from Wyndham Park Community Centre and The Smith Family Partnership for Education in Werribee.

APPROPRIATELY, the collective noun for a group of psychologists is a complex, which perhaps explains the outcomes for a recent meeting of mental health researchers and service providers in Orange, NSW. Director of the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health (CRRMH), Professor David Perkins said there was good evidence that rural mental health was not improving, and that single, short-term, disjointed investments were unlikely to make a longterm difference.

“We need to think about solutions in relation to the problems. What are we doing about the prevention and early intervention, how can we involve community members, how can we ensure the use of best evidence and new approaches to data as well as shared and effective leadership,” said Professor Perkins.

The ‘Orange Declaration’ identifies ten clear solutions to known problems and is the result of collaboration and contribution from a wide group of interested parties with the final declaration being published in ‘The Australian Journal of Rural Health’.

While the declaration seeks to provide solutions to how the complex of psychologists and service prov iders work a nd engage w it h t he r u ra l community, the core to the underlying problem of why rural mental health has become an issue, is more to do with rural people facing distinctive challenges including environmental, economic, social, technical, demographic and geographical, that are not being addressed.

THEY don’t come across as superheroes however there are countless people in our communities who put their life on hold in order to make life better for someone less able.

It is estimated that there are some 870,000 primary carers around Australia who provide informal assistance to another individual. This week, 13 to 20 October, is Carers Week. A week to acknowledge the service carers provide.

“The main issues are social isolation,” said Janelle Poar, a carer of two girls with special needs. “What social life?” said Melita Samovojska, a carer of her 87-year-old nan and her stepfather who suffered a heart attack.

Shepparton is fortunate to have a number of agencies who

provide support to carers and this week, they have joined forces to bring about an event that will allow carers to come together. Where possible, they should bring the person they care for to a networking barbeque at Victoria Park where they can meet with others with similar responsibilities.

“The day is to let people know they are not alone,” said Deb Qemal, a carer support coordinator with Familycare.

“There are some 300 to 400 registered carers in Shepparton with many more who are not registered,” said Mary Bourke, a carer support worker with Villa Maria Catholic Homes.

The barbeque is being held at Victoria Park, Shepparton on Wednesday 16 October from 12.00

New suburb set to expand Shepparton by 1,500 dwellings continued from front page

THE new suburb to be rezoned includes 177 hectares of land in Shepparton’s north-east and will be bound by Verney Road to the west, Ford Road to the north, Grahamvale Road to the east, and a Goulburn-Murray drainage reserve to the south.

The site will feature vibrant open spaces, tree-lined streets, natural features, a local convenience centre, open space and a network of shared paths to create a selfsustaining, high-amenity precinct.

Once fully developed, the existing Sheppa r ton Ch rist ia n C ol lege a nd Grahamvale Primary School will be integ rated into the u rban form of Shepparton, with room for expansion allowed for both schools.

The new suburb will be well connected and easy to navigate. Shared bicycle and pedestrian paths will provide direct links to schools and open spaces, including the three new local parks. These paths will also connect community members to a new local

convenience and community centre close to the intersection of Ryeland Drive and Verney Road.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said, “This plan will help satisfy Greater Shepparton’s future housing needs over the next two to three decades and help address housing affordability in our municipality.

“This exciting new residential development area will offer more housing choices to those who want to make Greater Shepparton their home.”

Developers of the new precinct will contribute over $21 million to help pay for the community facilities, drainage, open space and traffic infrastructure required to support the new facility.

Dear Editor, Well done to the 300,000 students and supporters that took part in last week’s climate strike across Australia. The prime movers involved in the climate strike in Shepparton also need special thanks.

IT is now well understood that climate change, if left unabated, will have a profound, if not fatal, impact on future on generations.

However, what is not appreciated (by the laggards), is if we do not treat climate change as a crisis and act accordingly, the vast majority of us will be negatively impacted.

Anyone who intends to live another 10 years – that’s about 20 million of us – will face the realities of a collapsing environment, increased heatwaves, more droughts, rising insurance costs, falling asset values, reduction in investment returns, unstable export markets, global instability and the list goes on. It’s all connected with a healthy global environment essential for our continued existence.

We must act together – now!

LITTLE TO BE PROUD OF Dear Editor, I see the NSW Nationals are looking for slogans to use on bumper stickers to boost their recognition.

Might I suggest ‘Little to be Proud of’, which reflects what country people think of the Basin Plan the part which used to look after regional areas continues to support.

Or how about ‘No water, no food, no jobs, no future’, which describes where this party, once the champion of rural communities, is leading us towards? Or maybe ‘Nationals – our latest cereal killer?’ And for the younger

generations, perhaps ‘Basin Plan = No future for me’.

I’m hoping that one day the Nationals will wake up to the fact that under the watch of Federal Water Minister, David Littleproud and Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, they are destroying the very foundation on which the party was built.

But the way things are going, I can’t see this happening before it’s too late.

IN RESPONSE TO JOINT LETTER Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the joint letter from La Trobe vice chancellor, John Dewar and GOTAFE CEO, Travis Heeney published in The Adviser (September 18) extolling the benefits of the new super school.

Dewar and Heeney note that ‘designs for the new college campus focus on positive attributes that can only be achieved by a large school – greater subject choices, new learning and pathway opportunities and better student support – while maintaining the atmosphere of a smaller school environment.’ They believe this is the best solution for improving student outcomes.

They must think we are mushrooms.

Do a quick internet search (Trevor Cobbold, school sizes, NAPLAN results, disadvantaged students etc.), look at the evidence and make up your own mind but please do not accept on face value what is being presented by the Victorian Education Department, the Minister for Education, or anyone else.

Cops in Coopers In its heyday, the Morris Mini Cooper S was, without doubt, one of the fastest and best-handling production cars on Australian roads having won Bathurst in 1966. This was most likely the reason the NSW police took up hundreds of them for use as highway vehicles supplanting the increasing use of motorcycles.

In the hands of a good driver, there were not too many cars that could get away from the Mini. Unlike cars today, the interior of a Mini was at best, spartan.

With its speedo located in the centre of the

console and uncomfortable seats, spartan seemed to be its hallmark.

To mark the progress of the Mini, Shepparton Motor Museum at Emerald Bank is staging a Mini month for October where they will have around 23 different Minis on show ranging from a 1967 police car replica, a race car and several versions and models covering the many years of the iconic vehicles.

T he M ini Moke, now almost disappeared from Australian roads is also in the display.

The 1967 Mini Cooper S police car replica is owned by Arthur Crosthwaite from Corowa, NSW, fit ted with the st a nd a rd C oop er S eng i ne w it h it s competition-spec engine, twin 1½” SUs and reconfigured and calibrated speedo located in front of the steering wheel and tacho to the side of it. The resale value of ex-police cars was low as they were driven hard, many were written off in the line of duty and the balance was de-speced to Mini K specifications before being sold through the trade.

Each year, the Business Awards conclude with a celebratory Gala Presentation Dinner, which takes place at Riverlinks’ Eastbank Centre.

Hosted by TV and radio personality, John Deeks, guests will be treated to a three-course meal and drinks at bar prices, with live entertainment provided by Matt and Jamie Hooper.

Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and

Industry executive officer, Lucy Cerrone said this was the first time in several years the annual awards dinner has sold out.

“We’ve sold out all 480 of our tickets, for the first time in many years. The awards dinner is a great opportunity to get together and celebrate local businesses.”

Next year will be a spectacular event, with the Business Awards celebrating 25 years in 2020.

Local angler reels in an award MOST weeks of the year on a Tuesday, local fishing expert and owner of Trelly’s Fishing and Hunting World, Steve Threlfall d rives to Melbou rne to co -host the television program, Talking Fishing.

Broadcast live from the Channel 31 Melbourne studios (a first for fishing television in Australia), the show brings together an expert panel of the nation’s leading fishing personalities to sit and talk fishing.

Talking Fishing streams live weekly on free-to-air Channel 31 in Melbourne and Geelong and online via Facebook and YouTube.

Following five years of fantastic fishing banter and advice, Talking Fishing has been recognised nationally at the 2019 Antenna Awards, an awards night acknowledging and celebrating the best in community television programming across the country.

Taking home the prize for Best Special Interest or Lifestyle Program in 2019,

Talking Fishing finished ahead of five other nominees from around the country.

Proud of his win and still reeling from the awards night celebrations at Melbourne’s Federation Square, Trelly said this was Talking Fishing’s first-ever nomination. “ T he w i n i s t r u ly fa nt a s t ic a nd completely out of the blue,” he said. “Our show usually ranks in the top two for all of Channel 31 in Melbourne, which has some diverse programming.

“We also stream our show to Facebook, which helps reach an audience outside of the metro areas.

“Next up for Talking Fishing, we are looking at trying to do some more outside broadcasting,” Trelly said.

Talking Fishing is on Tuesdays at 8:30pm on Channel 31 and is also streamed live from their Facebook page @TalkingFishing at the same time. You can also view past episodes of Talking Fishing via their YouTube channel.

Cleaning up the furballs

AS CATS have been known to do, they hit a fatal snag only to take a deep breath and then get back on their feet and start running, the Ardmona Cats are sticking to form.

We wrote last month that they appeared to be on their last life but as luck would have it, it may have been premature. Football legend, Brownlow Medalist and occasional shearer, Shane Crawford has by all accounts, agreed to work with the Cats as their coach if they can get their suspension overturned.

It now comes down to whether the Kyabram District Football League can put aside their interest in the money that is owed as opposed to fostering a great opportunity to bring a new level of excitement and challenge back into the game.

It is the sort of stuff movies are made from and in the current script, the league could well be painted as the bad guys.

of football for the fun of it. The fun slowly dissipated over the years when it became more of a business.

A football hero like Shane Crawford is not doing it for the money, but for the love of the game. In this instance, Crawford can teach more people besides the Cats, that this is how it should be.

Celebrating netball and football coaches COACHES of football and netball around the region were recognised at the 32nd a n nu a l G ou lbu r n Mu r ray C oache s Association presentation on Sunday night.

The annual event celebrates and awards coaches in all categories across affiliated leagues in the region.

Simon Quarrell, coach of the Nathalia Football Club women’s team, took out the evening’s main award, securing Senior Football Coach of the Year.

Stanhope Netball Club coach, Kerri Gray was congratulated for a stellar year for her team and awarded the Senior Netball Coach of the year award.

Shepp Notre/Mooroopna junior football club coach, Andrew Ferrier won the Youth Football Coach of the Year (under 13 to under 18), Kyabram Bombers’ junior football club coach, Jason Norman won the Junior Football Coach of the Year (under 12 and below), Rochester Netball Club coach, Kristy Roulston won the Youth Netball Coach of the Year and Mansfield was awarded as the Auskick Centre of the Year.
