Can the Plan Convoy to Canberra FA R M E R S a re a ng r y a nd t hey a re protesting. Owing to extreme resistance by the Federal Government to amend the Murray Darling Basin Plan, farmers across the region are mounting a protest convoy to travel from Yass to Canberra.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Jan Beer, a farmer from Yea in Victoria said, “The reason we are protesting is that the Basin Plan has failed on every level and the politicians are failing to acknowledge the

destruction being wrought by it in its current format.

“It is destroying communities and is creating unemployment throughout the region. It has economically ruined once viable farms and jeopardises the national food security.

“In trying to satisfy downstream recently constructed environmental needs in the South Australia, Murray River estuary, it is destroying areas of existing riverbanks

and forests here in Victoria and New South Wales.

“We are heading to Canberra to confront the politicians head on and to ask the Prime Minister to explain why are they so intent on continuing with a plan that is simply not working as initially intended, and is destroying regional communities, farmers, our productive agricultural sector and our nation’s food security.”

at the Caltex Service Station in Yass, New South Wales at 11am on Monday December 2 and then the convoy will travel to Canberra where a Water Embassy will be established in front of Parliament House.

Silver Lining Ride team tour GV Health Oncology Unit Nine intrepid souls did a tour of the GV Health, Oncology Unit on Thursday, November 21 in a stop-over of their 1300 km bike trip from Adelaide to Melbourne.

In its third year, the ride is to raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) in memory two friends of the group, Helen Hatzis and Mandy Herbert, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2017 The team plans to raise $150,000 to help

fund a research project which aims to develop an early detection test for ovarian cancer.

Cyclists left Adelaide on Friday 15 November and have so far stopped in Nuriootpa, Berri, Mildura, Euston, Swan Hill and Echuca.

Dr Jâvier Torres, director of oncology at GV Health gave the team a brief summary of the range of services that the unit now provides and how they are constantly expanding access to the community.

WHILE the Country Fire Authority (CFA) are busy fighting fires in this period of high fire danger, their members are continuously undergoing training in all aspects of not only fire fighting but also in team building.

One such area is the need for respectful behaviour between members in the teams that more and more, comprise both men and women.

Executive Director of People, Culture and Safety with the CFA, Garry Cook said, “ It all starts with respect, and from 25 November we begin the 16 Days of Activism to remind us why calling out disrespectful behaviour is so important.

“Safety and respect are two of CFA’s values, and they are a focus for us not only whilst we take part in this campaign but a focus in everything we do. This year, the

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence will align Respect Victoria’s Respect Women: Call It Out campaign.

T h is huge fo c u s on byst a nder intervention, on creating a culture change, is to ensure family violence and violence against women is not normalised.

This goes for within our homes, in our workplaces and in our communities.”

The Municipal Association of Victoria are funding community-based activities across the state as a part of this campaign and have also created a variety of resources in collaboration with the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria.

Shepparton Festival evolves THE Shepparton Festival is back on, now its 24th year. The program launch displayed a program of 60 events to run over 17 days beginning March 13.

Festival general manager, Louise Tremper says “Over the past 24 years the Shepparton Festival has gone from strength to strength because of the Greater Shepparton community. People of all ages and backgrounds help us put these events together to produce exciting celebrations of art and entertainment, for people from all walks of life.”

The program delivers a diverse range of events including visual arts, comedy, music, workshops, films, performances, feasts and a line-up of unique events you won’t want to miss. Whether

you crave a taste of culture, want to experience unusual places, are keen to explore art through your senses or simply love time with friends and family, EVOLVE 2020 has something for you.

The festival committee are equally excited to launch their new brand. A visual brand that represents the festival’s motto ‘unique events, unusual places’. It highlights a geographically diverse program and symbolises the human interaction.

A day full of smiles…

Shepparton’s Insight Dentistry team put together a fun fair last Saturday, November 23, which included a petting zoo, face painting, free coffee and a sausage sizzle. The day also included free oral assessments for the kids and goody bags. The dentist can be a scary time for children, so having a fun day where they could also get their teeth checked made it a little more fun for the kids.

Shepparton High School honours the past

KEEPING in touch with its past as it moves into a new phase, Shepparton High School will open its doors on Sunday, December 1 to pay tribute to 110 years of education before the site is transformed into a state-of-the-art secondary college.

For staff, students and their families, the special Sunday opening will be a chance to celebrate their involvement in the Shepparton High School community.

For visitors – many who taught at the school, attended as a student (or even did both) over the years – it will be a chance to visit familiar classrooms, catch up with old friends and recall their high school days.

“Services not included in Stage One of the redevelopment such as mental health, outpatients and oncology are already under stress and cannot wait 20 years for improved facilities,” said Ms Lovell.

Ms Lovell has been applying pressure to the govern ment to release the hospital’s revised masterplan to give the community certainty surrounding the delivery of a world-class health facility.

“Jenny Mikakos has let the cat out of the bag by confirming that the redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health will take a minimum of 20 years and will not be completed until 2035 at the earliest.” said Ms Lovell.

Community groups awarded grants by council AROU N D the Shepparton region, 19 community groups have been awarded grants for a range of purposes from the Greater Shepparton City Council. The

Council approved $20,500 in grants ranging from $500 to $2000 for small events and from $2000 to $5000 for larger events,

Greater Shepparton City Council aims to celebrate the local community and our diverse region through a range of major and community events each year. The various events supported by Council include sporting, cultural, commemorative, festive as well as annual community events.

The Event Grants program provides financial assistance as well as marketing support to groups who are organising events within the Greater Shepparton

municipality.

The total amount of funding allocated to the Small and Large Events Program is $45,000 for the 2019/2020 financial year.

This amount is split into two rounds.

The next round of Events Grants will open on Monday 2 December 2019 and close on Monday 10 February 2020.

Strong community spirit from new look local bank IT’S always nice to see the community coming together to help those in need. This time of year is always a little tougher for some families, which means that local groups like Shepparton Foodshare are in need of more supplies.

Shepparton’s A NZ team have been contributing to Shepparton Foodshare over the past six months. They responded to Foodshare’s call out for businesses and organisations to help out with much-needed food items that are usually hard to get, such as UHT milk, pasta, rice and personal hygiene products.

Ethnic Council hosting employment and housing forum The Ethnic Council of Shepparton is to host a statewide multicultural forum in Shepparton on Friday 29th of November 2019 on matters concerning employment and housing.

The forum is to seek out strengths and opportunities of different regions and how to tackle the most important issues of housing and employment that concerns most of our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD)

communities in Victoria.

Susan Benedyka from the Regional Development Company will be on hand to facilitate the forum that is being funded by the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion Division).

The forum will take place at Parklake, Shepparton on November 29 from 10.00am to 4.00pm The discussion will be around understanding how

the challenges of housing and employment for CALD communities are being tackled across the state, with a focus on shared experience, strength-based approaches and finding ways forward.

It is hoped that an agreement to ‘best practice’ approaches and opportunities to build on positive experiences with tangible, agreed directions and a joint plan of action will result from the forum.

A great success for Tatura 200 THE inaugural Tatura 200 Charity Bike R ide & Walk was held on Saturday, November 16 and according to all involved was an outstanding success. Championed

by Tatura Milk Industries the event raised $90,000, which will be distributed to local charities and organisations in the Goulburn Valley.

A total of 322 riders and walkers participated in the event, which catered for participants at all levels of ability and fitness. Riders had a choice of completing a 200km, 100km or 50km scenic ride that took in local orchards, dairy farms, country townships, the occasional Goulburn River crossing and views of Waranga Basin.

The 25km Gears & Graze ride was the most popular, with over 130 riders cycling to Longleat Wines in Murchison for an afternoon of wine, food and live music in the beautiful vineyard setting. Those not a fan of the bike had the option of walking a 10km track in Tatura.

Tatura 200 event manager, Georgia Vibert said, “2019 marked the 12th Tatura 200 event with an accumulative total of around $1 million raised over the years.

SHOPPING LIST: • 250g unsalted butter, melted, cooled • 220g brown sugar • 3 eggs, lightly whisked • 375g dried mixed fruit • 75g of each of the following: glace cherries (quartered), chopped dried figs, chopped dried pears, dried cranberries and chopped pitted dried dates • 2 tablespoons finely grated orange rind • 1 cup of orange juice • 1/3 cup brandy • 150g plain flour • 150g self-raising flour • 1 tsp of each of the following: bicarb soda, ground cinnamon, mixed spice and ground nutmeg • Custard, ice-cream, or brandy butter, to serve 1. Brush a two litre, oven safe pudding pot with melted butter and line with baking paper 2. Combine the dried fruit, orange rind and juice into a medium saucepan 3. Cook by stirring for 10 minutes over

medium heat or until fruit softens 4. Remove from heat and set aside for 30 minutes to cool 5. Add the brandy and stir to combine 6. Sift combined flours with bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon, mixed spice and nutmeg into a large bowl and add fruit mixture, butter, brown sugar and eggs and stir until well combined 7. Gently spoon mixture into the prepared pudding steamer, smooth top and secure the lid 8. Place pudding basin into a large saucepan. Pour in enough boiling water to combine halfway up the side of the pan 9. Place over medium heat and bring to the boil. Cook, covered, topping up with extra boiling water if necessary, for five and a half hours, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the pudding comes out clean 10. Remove steamer from saucepan and set aside for 10 minutes before turning onto a serving plate 11. Serve immediately with custard, icecream or brandy butter as desired.

Slovakia and Czech Republic

In Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Saint Nicholas brings gifts to the children on Saint Nicholas Day each year. He comes to Earth from Heaven by sliding down a golden rope. He is joined by an angel and a devil (cert), who help to reward the good children and punish the bad children. The cert scares the children who have been bad throughout the year by reminding them what will be in store for them in Hell if they continue their naughty ways.

Iceland

Icelanders go all out for Christmas with their festive celebrations lasting 26 days! Beginning on December 11, when Yule Lads or jólasveinarnir (yola-sveen-ahnish) arrive and continues through to January 6. The Yule Lads are a group of 13 mischievous tricksters accompanied by the evil Christmas Cat.

IF TURKEY is on the menu for your Christmas feast and you’re a novice in need of some know-how, read on.

First, you’ll need to select the bird that’s right for you; fresh and free range are highly recommended, however if you want to avoid missing out, frozen is also an option.

You’ll need to allow 15 minutes of preparation time and four hours cooking time for a five to six kilogram turkey, which will serve six to 10 people.

SHOPPING LIST: • 5-6kg Turkey • 120g butter, softened • 1 lemon, halved • Salt and pepper Preheat oven to 220 degrees. Place the turkey in a roasting tin and, starting at the neck, slide your hand between the skin and the breast meat to loosen it. Rub some softened butter under the skin, into the breast meat, then over the top of the skin, season well with salt and pepper. Insert the lemon halves in the cavity of the bird, this will keep it moist.

Roast for 30 minutes, until golden brown all over, then remove and brush with more softened butter (baste), now reduce the oven temp to 180 degrees.

Continue to baste every 30 to 40 minutes with softened butter or spoon over the turkey juices from the roasting tin, until the turkey is cooked and the juice from the thickest part of the leg runs clear. Transfer to a serving platter, let rest for 15 minutes but cover with foil to keep warm.

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is Australia’s largest and longest running Christmas gift collection appeal, having raised more than eight million gifts for people doing it tough, with close to 400,000 gifts being collected every year.

The perfect Christmas dessert

Ingredients: • 4 egg whites • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 tsp cornflour • 1 tsp vanilla essence

before shopping for, or creating your DIY decorations, will set the tone for the materials you’ll require and also give you a clear idea of how to decorate your tree.

When decorating, always remember to start with your string of lights first, followed by anything else strung, tinsel, garlands, strings of bows, then add the baubles or decorative ornaments of your choice.

• 300ml cream • 250g strawberries • 125g raspberries • 125g blueberries

Method: Step 1: Preheat oven to 120°C or 100°C fan and grease a large oven tray (a round pizza tray works best for this). On a sheet of baking paper the size of the tray, use a plate as a guide to draw a 23cm circle, then a 13cm circle inside it. Place the paper on the tray, pencil-side-down.

Step 2: Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add sugar a spoonful at a time, beating until dissolved between each addition until the mixture is thick and glossy. Add cornflour and vanilla and beat briefly, until just combined.

Step 3: Using the pencil lines as a guide, scoop large spoonfuls of meringue onto the tray to form a wreath shape. Use the back of a spoon to make an indentation in the top of meringue, all the way around the centre.

Bake for 1½ hours, then turn off the oven, prop the door open slightly and leave to cool completely.

Step 4: To serve, carefully run a large knife between the pavlova and the paper to loosen it, then slide onto a serving plate. Whip the cream to soft peaks and spoon over the top of the pavlova. Top with the berries.

WHAT YOU NEED: • Wrapping paper • Present • Scissors • Tape • Gift tags, ribbon and/or decorative bows FOLLOW THESE STEPS: 1. Gather gift and wrapping materials 2. Clear a large flat surface 3. Secure fragile items within boxes 4. Roll out wrapping paper 5. Place gift upside down in the center of the paper, so seams end up on the bottom 6. Bring the paper up one side and over the top of the box, all the way to the opposite edge then cut 7. Make long even cuts, if your edge is

jagged, fold it for a smooth seam 8. Recenter the gift on the paper 9. Bring one side of the paper up the side and halfway across the top 10. Before bringing the second side of paper up and over the first, create a clean seam by folding over the last 3cms or so of the paper, using your fingers to create a tight crease, then bring this side up so it just overlaps the first one and secure with tape 11. Fold the paper on each side of the present, starting on one end, fold down the top flap onto the side of the box, creating two little wings at the side.

Flatten those in against the box, then fold the remaining triangle of paper up against the box, fasten with tape 12. Stand the box up and repeat folding to the other side 13. Add finishing touches of ribbon and gift tags

The Council with the Chamber are set to launch the complimentary (timed) car parking campaign. “It’s important everyone realises that it’s for Council carparks, not privately operated carparks such as the Multi-Deck in Stewart Street, CarePark near Chemist Warehouse in Vaughan and Maude Streets and GV Health’s carpark. It’s also important that shoppers don’t overstay the time limits, if they do, they are likely to receive a fine,” Mr

The complimentary parking is for 15 minute, and two hour and five hour parks in the CBD. Greater Shepparton busy with activities for International Day of Disabled Persons THE annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Greater Shepparton City Council is a strong supporter of programs that assist in breaking down the perception about disability and will celebrate International Day of Disabled Persons by holding events at Sheppar ton Spor ts Stadium and Sheppar ton Art Museum (SAM) on Tuesday 3 December 2019, beginning at 10am and 11am respectively.

The free event at Shepparton Sports Stadium will include

all abilities sports including wheelchair football, soccer, wheelchair basketball, badminton and table tennis, as well as a free barbecue.

Shepparton Art Museum will hold a free all abilities tour of the current collection exhibition A Finer Grain.

There will be two sessions at 11am and 2pm, with an Auslan interpreter accompanying the 2pm group.

Council’s Access and Inclusion Officer, Mark Tomkins encourages the community to get involved in the International Day of People with Disability events.

The written word spoken out loud WRITING in any form is a challenge. To do so when you are faced with a disability presents an extra layer of difficulty.

Since April this year, a diverse group of local writers with a range of disabilities has been meeting once a month at the Shepparton Library to work with Melbourne-based writer and teacher, Chris Thompson as part of the Writers Victoria WriteAbility programme.

This group of a dozen or more writers, both young and old, work with Chris to develop skills in writing of all forms, and to share what they’ve been working on. In addition to their skills development, each session includes an opportunity for the writers to have their work read aloud to the group and to engage in conversations about it.

Chris, presenter of Behind the Scenes, the weekly arts and culture programme on Vision Australia Radio recorded a special show in the Shepparton studio of Vision Australia Radio that introduced each of the WriteAbility writers and gave them the opportunity to have their stories recorded for broadcast to an audience that will also include listeners in Adelaide and Perth.

Three actors from the recently formed Shepparton based theatre company, Upstart Productions read the stories. The Sheppartonbased Goulburn project has been supported

Tri-state New round of athletes return VicHealth grants with their booty for women’s sports To encourage more girls and women to become involved in sports and physical activities, health promotion foundation, VicHealth will provide $500,000 in new funding to Victorian sports clubs in an effort to get more people across the state physically active to improve their health and wellbeing.

VicHealth is encouraging clubs to apply for the latest round of its Active Club Grants, which open today, with funding between $3,000 or up to $10,000 available for community sport clubs to get more women and girls playing sport and increase ‘social’ or modified sport opportunities for people of all ages, genders and abilities.

Minister for Health, Jenny Mikakos said the grants support inclusion and encourage women and girls to be more involved in community sport.

“These grants are an important way to encourage women to have a go and take up a new sport, get fit and active and make friends along the way,” she said.

VicHealth CEO, Dr Sandro Demaio said Active Club Grants have supported hundreds of clubs across Victoria to get more people in their community moving in new ways.

“We’re putting the call out for a variety of sporting clubs and associations who are offering opportunities for Victorians to be more active and live healthier lives.”

Dr Demaio said with less than a third of Victorians doing enough physical activity to benefit their health, it was critical that sporting clubs were supported to offer more opportunities to get people moving.

Clubs are encouraged to apply for Active Club Grants funding through the VicHealth website before 12pm on 24 February 2020. This year the application process has been made simpler and easier for community sporting clubs.

When you focus on someone’s disability, you’ll overlook their abilities. Eight young people from ConnectGV have just returned from a week long trip to Adelaide where they demonstrated their collective abilities in a number of competitive events.

The team have been in training for nearly a year, setting new times and getting themselves prepared for the competition. With the support of NDIS funding, it enabled them to be supported by staff from ConnectGV and for some of them to take a holiday away from home that otherwise might not have been possible.

Aside from pursuing medals, and they returned with a chest full of them, the group were pressed to use independent skills that otherwise they might not have.

The occasion also enabled them to make new friends and expand their social horizons at parties the teams had, dining out and dancing with each other or dressing up for an ‘Out of this World’ theme night.

Ben Grapetin, one of the young competitors came back with three gold medals as well as two silvers and a bronze, also being awarded the runner up Best Male Athlete, category A. Each of them are very pleased and proud of their medals however, as Rosemary Glover, one of the athletes said, “The medals are good but it was the chance to go and meet new friends that was the best.”

just one example of this. Whilst the event is only 7 days ConnectGV staff are committed to months of training with the athletes leading into the event. There is also a great deal of fundraising that our staff do to cover the costs of the things such as team uniforms, banners, transport, accommodation that aren’t covered by the NDIS. ConnectGV staff work over and above to travel to and attend the event with the team to provide 24/7 support.”

Tri State Games is a competition run annually between, New South Wales, South Australia & Victoria This year the event was held for the second year in Adelaide.

Teams compete in indoor sports, team sports, athletics and swimming events, along with social events in the evenings. The Tri State Games 2020/21 will be in Cobram / Barooga (8-13th November 2020).

Taekwondo Interclub competition in Shepparton TAEKWONDO is one of those dedicated sports that can take a lifetime to fully master.

Head instructor of Koryo Taekwondo, Shepparton, Sam Rachele brought together 100 players of the martial art with differing skills and ranging in ages from five to 50, to test

their skills in competition, some for the first time.

According to Sam, “The kids had a great time. It was a lot of fun. It was more of an introduction for kids, some who have never competed before to try out and see if they want to go on to compete. It was good for the parents as

well as they got to watch their kids in competition.”

The event has been taking place now for several years, the last 3 have been in Shepparton with around 30 players from Shepparton while most of the others came up from Melbourne.

The sky over Tocumwal will host some of Australia’s best glider pilots as they vie for the title of Australian National Gliding Multiclass Champion when the nationals kick off on Monday, December 9.

The championships will see sixty glider pilots from across the country take to the sky for the 13-day event, eager for optimal weather conditions and the opportunity to soar skilfully and graciously in their bid for the top spot of championship holder.

The event is hosted by Tocumwal Soaring Club and will take place at the heritage W W II hanger known as Sportavia, located next to the Tocumwal Aerodrome from Monday, December 9 to Saturday, December 21.

Dennis described the historic hanger and surrounding facilities as the perfect location for the 13 day championship event.

“Tocumwal has a strong gliding history which is reflected in the gliders displayed on top of the Visitor Information Centre and the entrance to the Golf Club.

The opportunity to host the national championships is a chance to expose Tocumwal, its facilities, the surrounding landscape and our ideal weather, to glider pilots from across Australia and around the world,” Lumpy said.
