Big aspirations for VCE students

By Steve Hutcheson On the day VCE scores came out, Lake Victoria in Shepparton was where it was arranged that the highest achievers from each of the regions secondary schools should congregate to meet the media.

These were the Dux for that year of their individual schools around Shepparton.

Each student has different aspirations as to where they might go in the future, each of them looking forward to the challenges the future presents. One to go into applied mathematics, another onto dentistry, another into cybersecurity or I.T., another into biomedicine, yet another into health services.

Peter and Maria Copulos Foundation donate $1,000,000 to the new SAM

To the benefit of all of the Greater Shepparton community, the Peter and Maria Copulos Foundation have made a very generous donation of $1,000,000 towards the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM).

In acknowledgement of this generous gift, the SAM building foyer will now carry the Peter Copulos and family name.

Peter Copulos, a well-known and respected Shepparton businessman and philanthropist, migrated to Australia at age eight.

He commenced work at 15 years of age and has since built success upon success. Peter and his wife, Maria, established their foundation in 2008 to give back to the local community in appreciation for the opportunities they and their family have been given in the Goulburn Valley region.

Peter Copulos said: “I have been very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to come to Shepparton at a young age and to be able to work hard and build up our family business here. This town and region have been very good to me and my family and I value the opportunity to give back to significant projects like the new SAM, which will have lasting benefits for Shepparton’s future”.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural arts on display

AN EXHIBITION is often the culmination of the production of a body of work by an artist. Students undertaking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Art at Shepparton’s GOTAFE contributed to an exhibition titled ‘ArtEffects’.

The exhibition was in turn curated by GOTAFE Visual Arts students being trained in how to lead the curatorial, installation and presentation of an exhibition.

The students from the Shepparton campus have been involved in a number of projects throughout the year including Reflections of Kaiela, Woka, Yedabilla, Danam Street Art Mural, Hoodies of Dreams 3 and Ngardang

Girri Kalat Mimini, a statewide collective exhibition of regional Victorian Aboriginal women.

GOTAFE CEO, Travis Heeney said, “This exhibition is a celebration of how powerful making art can be and how it affects people in a strong and positive way. Attending GOTAFE is allowing these students to explore their cultural identity and is assisting them gaining the skills they need to work in the arts.”

Prepare your property ahead of bushfire season Australia’s 2019-20 bushfire season got off to an early, devastating start, with blazes in New South Wales and Queensland destroying almost three million hectares of vegetation and more than 740 properties and claiming six lives since late August-early September.

Fortunately, despite parts of Victoria reporting their driest winter and spring on record, the state has so far avoided the same fate as its northern neighbours. However, as history shows, things can change swiftly, and a long, hot summer lies ahead.

“There are some easy and affordable actions people can still take to prepare their homes before the full force of summer arrives, particularly in relation to ember attack. We would encourage people in bushfire-prone areas to act quickly,” Victorian Building Authority director of technical and regulation, Dr Darryl O’Brien said.

ACTIONS INCLUDE: • Seal gaps with joining strips, silicon weather strips, draught excluders on side-hung doors • Seal vents and weep holes in external walls with corrosion resistant steel, bronze or aluminium mesh • Seal around roofing and roof penetrations • If an evaporative cooler is installed, protect it with a mesh screen • Clear leaves from gutters and consider installing an appropriate leaf-guard type product • Check that your gutters are in good condition and will hold water if you block the downpipes • Enclose the subfloor of your home with a non-combustible material • Install shutters or metal flyscreens to doors and windows

A new lease on life for Stanhope SITUATED out among the cow paddocks and irrigation canals lies the little farming town of Stanhope, population 835. In 2015 it was designated the first ‘Legiondairy’ capital of Australia, a tribute to its predominant dairy industry influence.

As the population slowly ages however, the people of Stanhope are looking for means to revive the spirit of the town.

Campaspe Shire Council has recently endorsed a plan for Stanhope that will guide future community projects and activities.

“Some of the groups that assisted with the plan include the Stanhope Development Group, local retailers, Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Stanhope Primary School, police, Stanhope Health,

Fonterra, Stanhope Men’s Shed and the CFA,” The plan outlines four key principles, strong community connections, recreation and lifestyles, modern rural identity, investment and industry The principles will help form the basis to develop and prioritise projects, along with how to measure their success.

Some of the projects in the plan include the beautification of the town, continued development of the Community Recreation Precinct Masterplan, festivals and events, development of the open art space, the relocation of the kindergarten and a wetlands passive recreation area.

Community leader and a member of the Stanhope Development Group, Bob Holschier said, “We hope the shire can manage the communications between those that want things done and those that manage things being done to make it easy to get things done.”

Opening of 1994 time capsule

By Katelyn Morse Can you remember what life was like 25 years ago?

Last week students and staff of St Mary’s Primary School in Rushworth got a glimpse into the past when they opened a time capsule that was buried on December 11, 1994.

The large container was still in perfect condition as it was completely sealed in a concrete cavity.

There was a lot of excitement as old photographs, letters, documents, bottles of wine, items of clothing and newspapers, including a 1994 edition of The Adviser, were pulled from the capsule. St Mary’s Primary School principal, Catherine Fraser, explained the items to the children before taking it all back to the classrooms to sift through.

1994 was a big year for the Rushworth community. St Mary’s Primary School celebrated a 40-year reunion since opening in 1954, the school was also refurbished and there was the completion of the St Mary’s Hall which was built by the local community. To celebrate and commemorate the year, staff, students and parishioners decided to create a time capsule that was to be opened 25 years later, in 2019.

Current students and staff will add items to the contents of the time capsule and bury it again, to be opened in another 25 years. If any locals would like to contribute to the time capsule, they can drop items off to St Mary’s Primary School in Rushworth at the beginning of the new school year in 2020.

Parking in the CBD While the shopping heats up for Christmas, parking within the Shepparton CBD naturally intensifies, with complimentary parking in place, it has shown itself to be a boost to local trade without the pressure of not having paid for the time needed.

Traders along Fryer St have a positive feel about it. Tracey Miles, at Millers Clothing said, “People are liking it. They still have to think about the times but they are liking it.”

The streets are busy. It is that time of the year. “It has boosted the morale of shoppers. They are not having to rush back to fill

the meter,” said Bernie Hurren, owner of Aussie Disposal. “They may have to walk around the corner but if they were in one of the outlying shopping malls, they would walk the same distance as they do here. The atmosphere is good, I think if it is extended it will activate the centre.”

The complimentary parking periods runs from December 1 to January 31, 2020. People parking in the CBD however need to be aware that timed parking limits still apply.

Basin plan at risk without change THE Victorian and New South Wales Governments recently commissioned an independent report to consider the constraints modelling of the Murray Darling Basin Plan (MDBP) and found that it has a ‘high chance of failure’ if changes are not made.

The Murray Darling Basin constraints modelling was reviewed by an independent panel in light of community concerns about the unacknowledged impact of proposed higher flows on land, businesses and local infrastructure.

The panel convened a series of workshops to consult with modelling, operational and environmental experts from Victorian and

NSW state departments and agencies and the Murray Darling Basin Authority.

The report concluded that the existing modelling undertaken for the Constraints Measures Program was insufficient and did not explain to communities how increased flows will impact property and businesses or demonstrate the likely benefits for the environment for the extensive expenditure of public money. It also found that it did not give river operators confidence that they will not inadvertently flood someone without their consent.

by the Victorian Minister for Water, Lisa Neville to achieve greater transparency in the water market.

Minister Neville’s announcement that companies who own two percent or more water will be publicly identified, along with non-water users involved in the trade, goes part way to providing a better understanding of the behaviour of so-called speculators in the market, according to Ms Sheed.

“It’s been a very long haul, but suddenly we are seeing a lot of political attention and from the Victorian Government, welcomed action around issues such as transparency,” Ms Sheed said.

Christmas is a time for decorations and lights and a number of traders in the Shepparton CBD go to great lengths to dress up their windows for the season.

In conjunction with the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Southern Cross Austereo, traders vie for the best dressed window each year. This year the winners have been announced. First prize going to Nixon and Maude with a $1,000 voucher with second prize going to the The Eye Shop with a $500 voucher.

Handing out the awards were Alan Kellock, general manager at Southern Cross Austereo and John Anderson, president of the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “The competition was very close and there are a lot of good windows on display in the CBD. People should make the effort to visit the centre and while shopping, walk around to see them all,” said John Anderson.

New initiative for CBD provides alternative café experience SITUATED in a carparking space out front of the Lemon Tree Cafe, is a new on-street experience for customers of the cafe.

In conjunction with Greater Shepparton City Council’s efforts to enliven the CBD, a new temporary seating pod constructed from a refurbished shipping container built by Shepparton firm, Spiire, offers customers a unique dining experience.

Geraldine Christou, Director Sustainable Development with Greater Shepparton City Council said, “The Shepparton CBD had recently experienced a boost in café/restaurant atmosphere with various operators commencing business which has created positive flow-on effects for existing operators. Existing businesses, not just food premises, have benefited from this additional investment and have been thinking innovatively which has supported their ongoing growth and sustainability.”

Two visitors to Shepparton coming across from Kyabram, June Thain and Helen Young were among the first customers of the day to experience dining in the pod. “It is quite different,” said June.

The initiative will be evaluated on feedback from the customers, traders and Lemon Tree Cafe to determine the success and interest of other operators to share the shipping container.

Community art project for the new Shepparton Art Museum Greater Shepparton City Council and the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) are inviting the community to contribute to a community art mural project that will be displayed at the new SAM construction site.

The art mural will be displayed on panels around the new SAM building site facing Victoria Park Lake for several months. The project will build strong ties within the diverse landscape of Shepparton through

collaboration and art making.

SAM public programs officer, Lisa Linton, encourages every member of the community to book into a painting session.

“Each group will have one panel to paint, which will make up a large series of panels. We will have a planning workshop first where a design for the panel will be discussed and created. The group will then receive a selection of four colours chosen

from the SAM colour palette, to paint the design onto the panel, with the assistance from the SAM team.”

It has been a very busy year for the Goulburn Valley, headlined by the announcement of $208M in federal funding for the long-awaited Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass. Other highlights included a $30M package for Goulburn Valley Health, a $15M injection into the local fruit industry via FruitCo, and $2M for ConnectGV. Throughout this year we have also enjoyed seeing work continue at full speed on both the $300M Echuca-Moama Bridge and the $50M Shepparton Art Museum.

With the drought, this year has been a very tough time for those working in the agriculture sector. Whilst water is an incredibly complicated issue to deal with, you can rest assured that I am working as hard as I can to deliver better outcomes for our farmers and our farming communities.

While it has been a wonderful year for many in our vibrant and diverse district, I would like to take this opportunity to send a message of support to our farmers and their families.

We all depend on them. Horticulture, mixed farming and dairy are the lifeblood of our region, powering our economy and our culture in multiple ways.

Drought and water issues have dominated my advocacy this year because they are so important to all of us. We cannot allow our farmers to face these critical challenges alone.

Our dedicated CFA and emergency services workers are also deserving of our thanks. I fear it will be particularly bad fire season based on the early experience of the other states.

Each year, businesses of all kinds face challenges and no more so than small business.

The Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry has a small but active committee which works to achieve the best practice and best outcomes for business in Shepparton.

The Chamber strives to work in partnership with the Greater Shepparton City Council, Shepparton Show Me, the Victorian Chamber of Industry, Shepparton Tourism Association and the Committee for Greater Shepparton.

Over the last twelve months your local Chamber has been involved in successful activation in the CBD such as summer and winter market days, the Christmas promotion and more recently has worked with the Council to create a trial of complimentary timed parking.

Moving forward, the Chamber will be working with the Council to refine the design of the new look Maude Street Mall, a long-awaited project.

There are challenges ahead for business, but the Chamber is ready to advocate and work with small business towards a successful 2020.

What an amazing year of achievement and progress we have experienced here in Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley.

On behalf of the entire GOTAFE community, I would like to extend our best wishes for the holiday season.

2019 has been an exciting one for GOTAFE, as we continue to expand and align our training and education with the needs of local industry and community. During 2019 we delivered training to over 12,000 students across more than 150 courses and we were pleased that over 1,500 local students took advantage of the Victorian Government’s free TAFE initiative to train locally.

I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our employment, industry, education and community stakeholders who support and enrich our training programs. The support of our stakeholders is critical to the success of our students and we are fortunate to have many strong partnerships. We look forward to continuing to strengthen these and developing more in the new year.

As the end of the year approaches, La Trobe Shepparton has much to celebrate, not least some exciting plans for our campus building extension following confirmation of Federal Government funding to enable this much needed work. Christmas can feel like a crazy time of year as everyone rushes around grabbing last minute presents and groceries, attending school break ups and finishing off work before going on leave.

You can sense the tension as drivers become testy on the roads and it’s not unusual to see parents becoming impatient with kids when out and about.

My message this Christmas is relax and take the pressure off yourself and everyone else. Christmas doesn’t have to be overly expensive and a logistical nightmare. Focus on what really matters – family, community, kindness. Be forgiving of yourself and others.

Our whole focus at Lighthouse is about connection – to family, friends, mentors and role models. Our work shows us that what kids really want is to be acknowledged, heard, understood and supported.

They need experiences more than stuff. They need time caring and sharing with extended family and friends. They need your time and focus more than anything.

Worry less about everything being perfect and more about the feelings of those around you including other road users, shop staff, colleagues and kids.

Forget all the trimmings and trappings. Be patient, have fun and spend time getting to know each other a little better.

That’s the joy of Christmas.

On behalf of the Goulburn Valley Health board, staff and volunteers, I would like to wish everyone in the region a happy and safe festive season with family, friends and loved ones.

It has been a very busy and exciting 12 months at GV Health with the opening of our new dialysis unit and ongoing redevelopment works.

We recently held the official opening of our new redeveloped healthcare facility in Rushworth, Waranga Health, giving the Rushworth and surrounding communities an integrated facility offering a range of acute health, aged care and community health services.

We look forward to opening our newly extended emergency department in February, as work continues on our five storey inpatient unit, which is due for completion in the middle of next year. Once our new emergency department is open, we will be refurbishing the current emergency department which, when open, will allow us to double our capacity of 18 treatment bays to 36. This will take approximately 12 months to complete.

While Greater Shepparton Foundation works hard to support its community all year, it is at Christmas when our efforts have a major visible impact. For many of us this is a happy time with family and friends with all the trimmings of the festive season, but for others what they don’t have at Christmas causes stress, loneliness and trauma.

This is the motivation behind our annual Gift Giving Trees, Baskets of Joy food drive and community meals programs which sees hundreds of children, families and those on their own, enjoy a gift, a meal, or a treat that they wouldn’t otherwise experience at Christmas. This year we have broken all records.

The gifts and the food are the visible part of the giving, but the most gratifying part for me is the hearty dollop of our community’s genuine compassion and caring that helps those who are struggling to feel supported and loved.

Thank you to everyone who has given generously to make a big difference to the lives of many others.

A LOOK INTO RUSHWORTH’S HISTORY… Local author Alan McLean has published some very interesting books on Rushworth and its history. They make great gifts and are a great read for anyone.

“The Walls Have Spoken – the first 150 years of the Shire Hall at Rushworth”. This new book marks the big birthday of the heritage building, written by former resident, Alan McLean. The book recalls hall events involving people from Rushworth, Stanhope, Colbinabbin, Murchison, Whroo and farming districts in between, as well as visitors with lofty titles from places far and wide, prime ministers included.

Almost every district family, other than some arrivals in the past decade or so, are mentioned. One Rushworth family has had an extraordinary seven generations involved in events at the hall! The individuals are shown by name in the book. Several other families have five or six generations who were entertained, or provided entertainment in the building.

Christmas lunch invitation for those alone TWENTY years ago Robin Harwood of Vision Australia along with Tony Jerome (dec’d) saw a need to provide those people in the community without family, the opportunity to have a Christmas lunch with other people.

And so it started and has taken place every year since with the generosity of a number of donors over the years.

This year, the lunch is sponsored by the Shepparton Sikh Community and

the Greater Shepparton City Council and will be held at the McIntosh Centre, Shepparton Showgrounds at the corner of High St and Thompson St on Christmas Day. The doors will be open from 11.00am until 2.00pm and the lunch is free to all comers. No bookings are required.

Free measles immunisation available for travellers GREATER Shepparton City Council (GSCC) Environmental Health team is encouraging those thinking of travelling overseas to make sure their measles vaccinations are up to date.

People planning overseas travel should ensure they have received vaccinations appropriate to travel, including measlesmumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine if they do not have a documented history of two previous MMR vaccinations.

GSCC environment manager, Greg McKenzie said, “Free MMR vaccines are available to all eligible people born during or since 1966.

status, or who are aged over 18 months and have only had one measles-containing vaccine, should be vaccinated.”

Infants from six months and before 11 months of age can receive free MMR vaccine prior to travel overseas to countries where measles is endemic, or where measles outbreaks are occurring.

Serology (diagnostic blood test) is not required before vaccinating.

Vaccination is free and those eligible can attend one of Council’s immunisation clinics. Parents with infants from six months of age that are travelling should consult their GP for advice about MMR vaccination.

A traditional approach to farming Traditionally, there has been a degree of emotional and even political separation between environmentalists and farmers in general. Yet there is also some basis behind the claim that the livelihood of farmers depends on how well they are able to consistently conserve the natural resource under their feet.

T he last fif t y years have seen an acceleration towards industrial scale farming methods that the environmentalists argue is detrimental. To that end, a small number of farmers are beginning to look at the value of regenerative farming or using nature as a resource.

A study recently undertaken at the University of Wollongong in conjunction with Oregon State University is showing promise as a means of improving depleted soils while contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Scientists at the Tatura Research Institute hold that most farmers tend to over water their land rather than aim to optimise the needs required for plant growth. As drought bites in and water costs become more prohibitive, the justification at looking at alternative measures becomes even more

pressing.

Regenerative farming focuses on top soi l re generat ion , i nc re asi ng biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil.

“It doesn’t just seek to be sustainable, but seeks to work with natural and farming processes to rebuild soils or grazing systems that have been depleted,” said Professor Nick Gill from the University of Wollongong.

“Regenerative agriculture seeks to mimic natural processes, to work within the limits of natural systems and rely upon natural capital to generate productivity and in the process, repair agricultural ecosystems.”

Farmers who transition to regenerative agriculture undergo a ‘paradigm shift’ in their thinking, the researchers found.

“It means going out on a limb socially and culturally. For someone in a farming community, saying there’s a different way to be a farmer means you’re going against the grain. They report social pushback, even being ostracised, people getting angry at them,” said Professor Gill.

Southern Cross University in New South Wales has recently launched the world’s first degree in regenerative agriculture, aimed to equip land managers in tackling the impact of climate change. It will develop specialist

knowledge in a whole-of-system approach to farming, food distribution and production, examining human ecology, agro-ecology, regenerative agronomy, soil management and planning rural landscapes.

MAD Max was an iconic Australian movie produced in 1981 and set some time into the future. The world had fallen in postapocalyptic lawlessness and bands of marauding tribes roamed the country where the war between them is fought over oil.

The Pursuit Special, a suped up turbodriven V8 is driven in the movie by Max Rockatansky. It is based on a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT coupe, which was modified to become a police interceptor by the Main Force Patrol.

While the one remaining original vehicle used in the movie was shifted to the United States where it is now on display, replicas were

constructed to help in the promotion.

At one point, the replica was destined to also go overseas, Peter Robinson, a director of the Butcher Club in Shepparton purchased the easily identified vehicle to ensure it stayed in Australia.

While the vehicle is a construction, many of the additions and modifications are simply to convey a futuristic appearance. It now travels around Australia as a novelty display and perhaps provides an insight into a future where climate change and oil wars have altered the global landscape.

WITH Christmas just around the corner, Greater Shepparton City Council wants to remind residents looking at gifting an animal that they are long-term commitments, not just a cute, fluffy, disposable present.

Greater Shepparton City Council corporate services director, Chris Teitzel said, “Responsible pet owners need to know the costs associated with caring for an animal, such as animal registration, food and vet bills.

“We do encourage residents to adopt animals because they make a great addition to any family. Adoption gives animals that have been abandoned or surrendered a second chance. Animals can provide years of companionship and love but there are many aspects to consider before making such a life altering decision.”

Bringing an animal into your home is a lot of work. They may be cute and adorable on Christmas Day, but they need love, care and companionship until well after the festive celebrations are over.

If you are looking to adopt animals, visit Council shelters, RSPCA, Lost Dogs Home, local adoption agencies, or reputable and registered breeders, not backyard breeders.

Please remember that animals deserve better than to be dressed up in bows, shoved under a tree, and then tossed out with the wrapping paper.

Keep your pets cool over summer AS THE Christmas period and the warm summer months approaches, it is worth remembering that one of the most deadly conditions for our pets is heat exhaustion and dehydration.

The following are a few tips to remember.

1. More water more often. Makes sure there are several bowls of cool, clean water available at different locations around the house.

2. Provide shade. Pets left alone need to be able to get out of the sun so make sure there is a nice cool area out of the sun all through the day.

3. Short Hair. A trip to the dog groomers

at the start of summer will allow you to keep their fur short so they are not getting too hot.

4. Let them dig. Dogs dig for a lot of reasons, one of them is to find a cool place under the ground surface.

5. Ice poles. Adding their favourite treats to water and freezing it will help cool them down on a hot day.

6. Give them a bath. If your pet is kept in a yard, a child’s play pit makes an ideal pool for your dog to cool off on a hot day.

7. A yard not a chain. Let your dog roam around a yard or a decent sized enclosure to find the best resting place to cool off.

Dehydration can be deadly so being aware can mean the difference between life and death for your pet.

Speed in the blood Watching his father race around a speedway circuit as a young boy was all it took for Garry Jacobson to fall in love with motor sports.

Jacobson, now 27 has recently joined the Matt Stone racing team to compete in the Virgin Australia Supercars championship driving a ZB Commodore.

His career in racing has been a progression beginning with go-karts at the age of 13, he began winning titles in 2008 leading to a scholarship with the Confederation of Motor Sports, (CAMS), while still in high school debuting with the CAMS Rising Star program after winning at Phillip Island.

During this time, Garry was committed to building his brand, learning about teamwork, understanding the support that goes on behind a racing team. He took up a post as a motor sport mechanic on leaving school.

“Supercars are the pinnacle of Australian motor racing.

My focus is to build my market value with the sport and become a good ambassador for the businesses that provide the sponsorship.” said Garry.

With an ultimate aim of racing in the United States at NASCAR, Garry certainly has speed in his blood.

Huge upgrade for Kialla Park Recreation Reserve WORKS have commenced on a $423,000 upgrade of the facilities at Kialla Park Recreation Reserve to ensure they provide for and encourage female participants in the various sporting activities that use this great facility.

Greater Shepparton City Council has awarded the building contract to Moretto Building for the upgrade, which will expand the existing change room facilities and upgrade all amenities to current accessible standards at the popular Kialla complex.

The upgrade works include the construction of female change rooms, toilets and showers along with first aid room and an umpire’s room to ensure this facility is female friendly and to cater for the increasing number of female participants in cricket and football.

Kialla Park Recreation Reserve is home to the Goulburn Murray AFL headquarters and a number of sporting clubs including women’s football, junior football and cricket teams.

It will also be the home of the GV Umpires association from 2020.

Together with the upgrade to the oval and lights this work will transform this facility into a modern sporting hub.”

Works are due to commence this month, with completion anticipated early April 2020.
