Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Greater Shepparton City Council, Lighthouse, Tourism Greater Shepparton, Shepparton Show Me, Fairley Leadership along with Growing Regional Opportunities for Work have been working together to prepare an effective response for the community to adapt.

Statement from the Premier V IC TOR I A Police has established a Coronavirus enforcement squad of five hundred officers to ensure containment measures that have been put in place to combat Coronavirus are followed.

C o o r d i n a t e d t h r o u g h t h e Po l i c e Operations Centre, the officers will be out in the community doing spot checks on returning travellers who are in 14-day isolation, as well as enforcing the bans on indoor and outdoor gatherings.

This includes the decision of the National Cabinet to implement Stage 1 of a shutdown of non-essential activity across the country from midday today Monday, Mar 23 which is aimed at slowing the spread of Coronavirus.

The businesses that will close due to the Stage 1 shutdown include pubs, clubs, nightclubs, Crown Casino, and licensed venues in hotels and pubs. It also includes

gyms, indoor sporting venues, places of worship, cinemas and entertainment venues.

Restaurants and cafes will only be allowed to provide home delivery or takeaway services.

This decision and other containment measures are meaningless if Victorians don’t take them seriously or don’t think they will be caught if they flout the rules.

Such thinking is wrong and the new Coronavirus enforcement squad at Victoria Police will take action against anyone caught doing the wrong thing.

The Stage 1 shutdown will have a sig n i f ica nt i mpac t on t he l ives a nd livelihoods of many Victorians, but if we don’t do this, more Victorians will contract Coronavirus and more Victorians will die.

The decision will be reviewed regularly by the National Cabinet, and speaking as honestly as possible, it’s likely that

governments across Australia will need to go further in the days and weeks ahead.

The government can also confirm that school holidays for government schools in Victoria will be brought forward, starting on Tuesday 24 March. Schools will use this time to support teachers and staff plan for flexible and remote learning in the event schools need to move to that method of teaching.

I have recently told Victorians that the Government will ask them to do things they have never experienced before – these are the types of measures that I was talking about.

I also call on every Victorian to undertake t hei r civic dut y a nd prac tise social distancing: don’t be closer than 1.5 metres from another person, wash your hands and practise good hand hygiene.

Do that for yourself, your loved ones and

for the loved ones of people you have never met. It will save lives.

The good, the bad and ugly…

By Geoff Adams THERE are 1000s if not tens of thousands of extraordinary stories about Coronavirus that are compassionate, and equally bad.

There’s a boon of planting vegetables, so much so Bunnings Shepparton had run out of seedling at the time of going to press.

Fresh Goulburn Valley fruit and vegetables are sought after in the big Sydney and Brisbane markets, adding considerable value to local orchardists.

Pental Limited’s Shepparton factory in Drummond Road has increased production dramatically with its White King cleaning agents along with a host of other soap and handwash cleaning products. Demand is huge across Australia, New Zealand and even China for its products.

Despite so many negatives, another local manufacturer, Med-Con, Australia’s only mask manufacturer has orders coming in from all over the world, let alone Australia. The Lemnos factory is going 24/7 fulfilling huge orders for the government as well.

The major benefit to the Shepparton region is a jobs boon at the mask manufacturer.

Busy business sectors are: pharmacies, f r u ite rs, butche rs, se r v ic e st at ions, superma rkets and liquor outlets are experiencing a spike in sales.

Local restaurants and eateries have been quick to adapt by offering takeaway pick-up and delivery services. Readers can refer to the special Adviser feature with several of Shepparton’s pick-up and delivery outlets on pages 18 & 19.

Shiraz-a-virus hasn’t killed anyone to date according to a local resident who mentioned it to The Adviser.

On the ugly side…community gardens are being ripped up by unscrupulous locals, the odd fight has broken out at supermarkets, bus loads of out of towners have descended on Shepparton, Euroa, Benalla, Echuca, Tocumwal, Deniliquin and many other d ist ric t superma rkets , butchers a nd pharmacies, causing chaos in some cases. The Adviser heard that a bus load of people from Melbourne parked and entered a well known Shepparton food outlet, did their big shop and returned to their bus, changed into other clothes and tried to enter the outlet again in disguise, they were stopped by security.

A truck driver spotted a stockpile of toilet rolls about to be shipped to China in a Melbourne warehouse. He reported it to authorities.

The Adviser has learned of container loads of toilet paper being shipped to China every day.

Council being proactive in dealing with Covid-19

ACCORDING to Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Seema Abdullah, “Business as usual is no longer an option and Council is making adjustments on a daily basis as per the advice from the State and Federal governments.”

At the time of writing, a number of facilities have been temporarily closed.

This includes Aquamoves, the Shepparton Sports Stadium, Tatura Park Exhibition and Events Complex, Eastbank and Westbank performances and Senior Citizen facilities.

At the same time, a number of events and activities have been cancelled including Activities in the Park, Planned Activity Groups for the elderly and Council events involving more than 100 people.

Modified activities include SAM, only open for the exhibition, libraries and the Shepparton Business Centre are open but programs will be closed, McIntosh Centre/ Showgrounds cancelled as per the number limitations.

Services within Council such as Planning and Building are only open to phone and email appointments. Meals on Wheels will continue to be delivered but on three days instead of five. Recipients will still receive five meals, two on Monday, two on Wednesday and one on Friday.

Other services such as kindergartens, KidsTown, family day care centres and long day care centres will remain open.

Cr Abdullah said, “Other services such as in-home care will continue. Our staff are being given additional coaching in hygiene to ensure that our clients get the best and safest attention.”

“The Council has the best interest for the community and our staff in this instance.” said Cr Abdullah. “We are currently operating in accordance with the Municipality Emergency Plan and members of the public are advised to keep checking on the Council website as well as the Department of Health and Human Services for any changed conditions.”

“I would also ask that if anyone has elderly or vulnerable neighbours that they check in on them to make sure they are ok and have access to food, medication and other supplies,” said Cr Abdullah. “We also encourage our community to continue to be active and stay connected with others during this period, whether it’s via phone, social media or small get-togethers.”

Obituary : Barry Thomas Perryman IT WAS just 17 months ago that friends and family gathered to farewell Barry’s wife Bev. That was a difficult day for all, but it was especially heartbreaking for Barry as he had to say goodbye to the love of his life. The family told me, that he sort of, just gave up after Bev’s passing, every anniversary, birthday or special milestone he faced without her broke his heart that little bit more. Many friends and family already knew this fact and all agree that it’s important everyone knows that Barry was ready to go, more than ready to be re-united with Bev and we hope that Barry can take some comfort from that thought.

And we honour him by remembering him for who he really was, a placid, gentle man. A man who lived for his family, a man who wasn’t perfect (because he was just like the rest us) he had his ups and downs, good days and bad but he lived his life to the fullest, he was a great husband, father and pop and a terrific friend to many. He was a good bloke, who lived a great life with music, photos, poetry and tributes.

Barry Thomas Perryman, was born in Box Hill, Victoria on the 15th of August 1940. He was the eldest of three children born to parents Vicki and Tom and brother of Faye and Neil.

The Perryman family lived in Albert Park but moved to Box Hill at the commencement of WW11.

Barry attended Box Hill South Primary School and also Tooborac Primary School. A young Barry alternated between schools for a number of years before completing his education at Box Hill High.

Barry was an exceptional sportsman. During

his teenage years he was a gymnast, he competed in long jump and triple jump competitions and was, more often than not, the victor. He held the school records for many years in both triple and long jump. He was an accomplished tennis player and took professional tennis lessons. He was well known for his footy skills and was a valued member of the football team at Tooborac.

Unfortunately, he had to give sport away in his early 20s due to irreparable knee injuries.

Barry was just 15, when he left school to begin an apprenticeship as a printer with The Age. He joined the Army Reserve and received his Army Driver’s Licence on the 23rd of October 1960. He also received the Certificate of Proficiency in Hand and Machine Composition from the Apprenticeship Board of Victoria on the 14th of August 1962.

He made the move to Benalla in 1974, where he took a job with the Benalla Ensign which at the time was owned by Geoff and Angela Adams, publishers of The Shepparton Adviser are still very dear friends of the family today.

In 1986 Barry moved his family to Shepparton where he finished his working life at The Adviser . He retired in his early 60s.

Taking a step back we take a look at how Barry and Bev started their life together.

Barry was passionate about racing, both motorbikes and cars. It was a passion he shared with his brother-in-law John for many years.

It was at a motorbike race meeting that he met the love of his life Bev Gough. (Bev often said he was a pretty good catch because he was a good looking fellow with a nice car) After courting for a couple of years, Bev and

Barry were married on the 16th of January 1965 in the Presbyterian Church in Box Hill. Bev and Barry hired a caravan at Box Hill and towed it with the old FC Holden to Lakes Entrance for their honeymoon.

Bev and Barry welcomed their first child Glenn in 1966, he was followed by Neil in 1967, Kevin in 1969 and finally a girl Debbie in 1975.

Barry was the cook in the household (although Bev always did the roasts), he was a great cook and the kids struggled somewhat to pick his best, because it was all good, but they agreed that his stew with dumplings and his homemade pies and sausage rolls were most memorable – and, he even made his own pastry!!!

During retirement, Barry and Bev moved back to Melbourne and made their home in Melton.

It was important to be close to their kids and of course the grandkids. He lived his final days surrounded by family and of course the family dogs, Stella, Ruby and Carlos.

His very last days were spent at the Northern Hospital and although his body was failing him, his mind was still sharp. He had a lovely doctor named Maureen.

Although sad, the family knew he was ready to go to be with Bev when he passed away on the 23rd of January 2020, Barry was 79 years of age.

Barry is survived by his brother Neil and his children and their partners, Glenn, Neil and Cindy, Kevin and Kerri and Debbie and Mark.

His grandchildren and their partners, Luke and Bailey, Alexia and Thomas, April and John, Sami and Natalie.

He will be dearly missed but always remembered.

From little things big paddock trees grow A small amount of effort can provide huge benefits when it comes to protecting paddock trees now and for the future.

“Many of our large paddock trees are dying and not being replaced, leaving large gaps in the agricultural landscape,” Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority’s (GBCMA) Janice MentiplaySmith said.

Ms Mentiplay-Smith also said many landholder’s revegetated sites provide links to existing remnant vegetation.

“This is terrific but we do recognise that sometimes establishing large corridors of vegetation is not possible. Small ‘islands’ or ‘stepping stones’ such as trees dotted across a paddock are just as important for native animals as well as for providing shade and shelter for stock.”

Through the Linking Landscapes project, GBCMA can provide landholders with purpose-built tree guards.

The guards are fabricated to withstand pressure from cattle and sheep. Each guard requires four steel pickets to ensure it remains in place. Placed around an emerging seedling in the paddock, it can remain until the tree is strong enough to withstand stock pressure, and the guard can be relocated to protect another emerging tree.

The Linking Landscapes is supported by the GBCMA through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

SDJFL president, Mark Lambourn said a new naming rights sponsor is a big leap forward to create more pathways and community inclusion for the region.

The agreement was signed just weeks after Mr Bradshaw took over the local Toyota dealership. With the brand already connected to football and community programs, he said it was an obvious fit.

“Toyota is heavily involved in the community with programs like the ‘Good For Footy’ and ‘Toyota Community Foundation’ already well established. My goal was to reposition the brand and use these programs and genuinely support the community,” Mr Bradshaw said.

Keep making every drop count in cooler weather

WITH cooler temperatures signalling the arrival of autumn, Goulburn Valley Water is reminding people to continue saving water into the winter and spring seasons.

While outdoor use is predicted to decrease with cooler weather, residents are still urged to look at how to make every drop count indoors.

People can take a 4-minute shower to save about 80 litres per house per day, only use the dishwasher or washing machine when full and on eco-mode, and scrape dishes clean rather than pre-rinsing.

Huge hospital redevelopment on track for 2021 completion continued from front page This project is set to create approximately 300 full time equivalent new jobs and will ensure that the Greater Shepparton area will have more health services available and less wait times.

While the end date for this huge project is still set for late 2021, there is still plenty happening and you only have to drive along Graham Street to see just how much has changed since the project began.

Apart from the crane sitting on top of the five-storey building (which is due to come down this Friday) and the new Dialysis Unit which opened in November last year, the first new building that you see is the new Emergency Department (ED). The ED is set to be double the capacity of the original ED, though it’ll be another 12 months before we see it at its full capacity while the existing ED building will be stripped back to a shell and rebuilt. This will include a new Satellite Medical Imaging Department, which will have two new X-ray rooms, an ultrasound

room and a new CT scanner.

The new ED building will feature three new and much larger resuscitation bays, two negative pressure isolation rooms, and mental health and sexual assault areas to provide a more discreet service.

The main building is up to the final stages now with some 100-120 workers currently adding the final touches to the insides to ensure its completion by mid July.

The ground floor won’t be seen by patients, but still carries a lot of importance, as it’ll be ensuring they are well fed during their stay in hospital. The new kitchen will be a significant upgrade from the original kitchen that was built in the 1970s, with brand new equipment and a brand new menu.

That’s right. Patients will be able to order a greater variety of meals at various times of the day, giving patients more choice and flexibility around their meals. This change is due to the importance of good nutrition during recovery, and will be done through an electronic system to make mealtime at

the hospital much easier and to give patients more control.

The first floor of the main building will include four new theatre rooms, recovery bays and the Intensive Care Unit, while the second and third floors will be medical and surgical wards. The top two floors will hold the Central Energy Plant, which will supply power to the whole site including the existing hospital.

As it’s still a fully functioning hospital during this redevelopment, the community can expect a lot of movement to their

services over the next 12 to 18 months.

GV Health CEO, Matt Sharp said, “We are aware that this may cause confusion and disruptions, but there unfortunately isn’t an easy way to continue providing services whilst undergoing such a large-scale redevelopment.”

The overall effort is called the Greater Shepparton Response.

Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO, Sam Birrell said, “The Covid-19 pandemic is

The key is the Greater Shepparton Response Business 2 Business Website (to be launched this week) which can have streams focused on support for the business community (cross deployment of workforce, information sharing, supply chain

support locally etc) and community (food supplies for the vulnerable, health support, information, care for the elderly).

The site will contain a directory and a noticeboard. This way, businesses can communicate what they need (employees, supplies etc.) and other businesses can respond with assistance if they can give it.

The site will also try to provide some information and support on how to deal with various situations.

Bubble tea, a taste and texture sensation

CREATED in Taichung, Taiwan in the 1980s, bubble tea is a mix of milk tea, tapioca pearls and syrup. It spread through Asia, gaining popularity and then exploded in popularity across the United States. It has now arrived in Shepparton.

Bubble Cuppa is a quaint little bubble tea shop that opened in November. Phoebe Chow, the owner, saw the rise of bubble tea shops in Melbourne and knew there would be a demand in Shepparton.

More than 20 flavours are on offer such as jasmine milk tea, taro milk tea, mango green tea, and even milk tea.

“Young people love the flavours and the texture, thanks to the chewy tapioca balls,” said Phobe.

“Besides the drinks, we also have a range of snack foods, a lot of Asian flavours, to go with them.”
