Council adopts policy to reduce plastic use at its events

IT is only the last 30 years or so that we have dived right into the use of cheap, disposable plastics in almost every aspect of our lives, and more significantly at great cost to the environment. Perhaps that is about to all come to an end. At the most recent July Council meeting, Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the Single Use Plastic Free Council Run Events Policy, aiming to significantly reduce the waste from single use plastics and the impact on the environment. Elly takes out Furphy youth literary award T HIS year’s Furphy Literary Awards were announced at a virtual ceremony on Saturday night with Melbourne writer, Ruby Todd taking the open prize for a story about events in a woman’s tumultuous life
culminating in the HMAS Melbourne Voyager disaster. Two other works were highly commended by the judging panel in the open category, which received a total of 850 entries from
across Australia and overseas. Furphy Literary Award director Sam Furphy said that the quality of the shortlisted and finalist entries was very pleasing. Continued on page 2
