IT is only the last 30 years or so that we have dived right into the use of cheap, disposable plastics in almost every aspect of our lives, and more significantly at great cost to the environment. Perhaps that is about to all come to an end. At the most recent July Council meeting, Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the Single Use Plastic Free Council Run Events Policy, aiming to significantly reduce the waste from single use plastics and the impact on the environment. Elly takes out Furphy youth literary award THE junior awards were won by students at Goulburn Valley Grammar School. Year 12 student, Elly Miechel won the Youth Short Story prize and year 5 student, Lila Plunkett won the Junior Short Story prize. Elly’s wrote her story through the eyes of a French family aboard the Titanic, moments before it sank. Her inspiration for the story came from visiting an exhibition in Melbourne and her fascination with the colossal waste of human life. Lila’s story was centred around her love of the bush. It concerned a young girl and her dad trekking through the bush to visit a cave and being trapped with a sudden rock slide.
The girls both expressed a love of writing that they intend to continue into the future. Their stories have been republished on The Adviser website. The finalist entries from each category will be available to read from Sunday 26th July on the Furphy Literary Awards website. The Furphy Literary Award is working towards an annual publication of an anthology of selected works from entries submitted each year FLA director, Adam Furphy said. Toolamba Growth Plan 2020 adopted by Council TOOLAMBA is the first of Greater Shepparton’s townships to have its own growth plan to guide residential development for the next 30 years and ensure infrastructure and services are delivered in a timely manner to support expansion. Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the Toolamba Growth Plan 2020 at the July Council Meeting. The township was identified as an area of future growth in the Greater Shepparton Housing Strategy 2011. In addition to the potential impacts of the proposed Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass, several landowners to the west of Toolamba have expressed interest in rezoning and subdividing substantial tracts of land in recent years. Council appointed Ethos Urban Pty Ltd to undertake preparation of the Plan in February 2019. Two rounds of community engagement were conducted, the first in May 2019 for preliminary input, and the second between December 2019 and March 2020 to receive feedback on the draft.
Page 2 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1519 Wednesday, July 29, 2020
In response to matters raised by the community, Council commissioned Mesh Liveable Urban Communities Pty Ltd to prepare the Toolamba Housing and Streetscape Typologies 2020 to accompany the plan, which was also adopted by Council. The Typologies outline key aspects of the local character and provide guidance to ensure Toolamba’s rural identity is retained as the township evolves. Council officers will now begin preparation of a planning scheme amendment to incorporate the Toolamba Growth Plan 2020 and the Toolamba Housing and Streetscape Typologies 2020 into the Greater Shepparton Planning Scheme. The amendment is expected to be placed on public exhibition towards the end of 2020 and to be finalised in late 2021. Iso Kings reign over Get Mooving Challenge TEAM camaraderie and a keen drive to beat their inter-office competitors at all costs saw the Iso Kings win this year’s Get Mooving Challenge. The annual four-week challenge encourages individuals and teams to hit the pavements and track their steps for a month with a Fitbit or phone app, vying for position among other teams looking to claim line honours while putting their best foot forward for their mental and physical health. Levi Power and Nate Dedman are two members of the victorious Iso Kings team, from AFL Goulburn Murray, which took out top-spot ahead of team ‘Adults Out of Order’ by a relatively minor 33,000 steps. Fellow AFL Goulburn-Murray team, the femme Iso Queens, pulled up in third place. For context, committing to 10,000 steps a day is seen a living an active life, with noticeable benefits for anyone’s mental and physical wellbeing. Some of the Iso Kings team were cleaving

hours out of their day to hit their stride, at times chalking up 30,000 steps in a day. Despite a relatively fit basketballer himself, Nate Dedman said the challenge frequently sparked him to lace up and step off, more to keep up with his teammates’ soaring tallies than anything else.
He said the rivalry in the AFL Goulburn Murray office could even get nasty. “The Iso Queens were exceptionally competitive, and there were even accusations of cheating,” he said. “We weren’t going to lose, though. Let’s put it that way.”
Another water report, another set of problems identified WITH the volumes of reporting that is undertaken by the government in relation to water and water entitlements, you would imagine that they might be close to reaching some sort of consensus on how a sensible and largely agreeable arrangement might be arrived at. It would seem not, however. In looking at one of the more recent reports, State Member for Shepparton District, Su zan na Sheed said she is concerned by many of the findings of the Procu rement of St rateg ic Water Entitlements report. Commissioned by former Federal Water Minister, David Littleproud and conducted by the Australian National Audit Office, the report highlights several issues with the Commonwealth’s buyback of water to meet environmental targets. “Like many, I’m suffering a bit from Murray Darling Basin Plan report fatigue,” Ms Sheed said. “But this is an important document and points to numerous shortcomings in the
water buyback process. I’m concerned the Auditor-General criticises the nature of these closed-tender deals and that commercial decisions were reportedly taking place in the Federal Water Minister’s office. “It points to yet another area where transparency is lacking in the water market.” Coming at the issue with a different approach, eleven municipalities in Riverina and upper Murray region have issued a joint Water Position Paper that ‘seeks a sustainable, apolitical, ethical evidencebased suite of solutions to ensure the optimal use of water across the Murray Darling Basin.’ The paper looks at aspects of water trading and in particular, the ‘unbundling’ from land use that has led to unforeseen problematic outcomes that enable water to become a profit-making entity in own right rather than serve the broader needs of the community and nation as a whole.

The Adviser now has aerial photography capabilities with the addition of a new DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone to the team. Staff were taken through training last week, led by drone experts from UAVisuals. Learning how not to crash and destroy an expensive piece of company equipment, or get arrested for flying it in the wrong place at the wrong time, were priorities.

Shepparton Foodshare is in need of staple items FOOD insecurity is rising! How is it that a developed country like Australia, has around one in four people in regional areas such as Shepparton that have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months? Alarmingly, children represent 22% of food insecure Australians. Shepparton Foodshare provide muchneeded items for the 100 or so agencies in the region that collect food, needs your help to source food staples including rice, pasta, pasta sauce, UHT milk, cereal, breakfast spreads, muesli bars and snacks. Grace Grieve, Shepparton Foodshare Coordinator, said “these items are always difficult for us to source due to their long shelf life, however at the moment as a result of the COVID pandemic it is even more difficult for us to get these items”. Grace said, “We would be grateful if the community, when doing their weekly grocery shop would consider popping a few items in their trolly to donate to Foodshare. For example, just $10 will buy enough pasta, UHT milk and breakfast spreads to put in 2 family food boxes.”

Put a smoke alarm in your bedroom: It could save your life OVER the past 10 years, CFA data shows 25 per cent of all fires that resulted in death or serious injury started in bedrooms. Smoke alarms should be located in every bedroom and living area, and should be interconnected, to give people the greatest chance of surviving a home fire. However, just one in 10 Victorian households have their smoke alarms in the recommended locations, with many just having one smoke alarm installed in a hallway. CFA North East Region manager, Community Safety, Darren
Viney said: “This practice is based on the previous advice which means that if an alarm is activated in one area, the other alarms will also activate, alerting residents sooner”. Most common fire causes in sleeping and lounge areas are fixed and portable heating units, open fireplaces and electrical faults. So winter is a critical time for people to be aware of the dangers that may be present in their homes. “Smoke alarms really do save lives,” Mr Viney said. “The smell of smoke will not wake you up.”

FOR people who don’t understand what it means to be on a ventilator but want to take the chance breaching COVID-19 restrictions... For starters, it’s not an oxygen mask put over the mouth while the patient is com for tably lyi ng dow n read i ng magazines. Ventilation for COVID-19 is a painful intubation that goes down your throat and stays there until you live or you die. It’s done under anaesthesia for two to three weeks without moving, often upside down, with a tube inserted from the mouth up to the trachea that allows you to breathe to the rhythm of the lung machine. The patient can’t talk or eat, or do anything naturally - the machine keeps you alive. The discomfort and pain they Page 6 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1519 Wednesday, July 29, 2020
feel from this means medical experts have to administer sedatives and painkillers to ensure tube tolerance for as long as the machine is needed. It’s like being in an artificial coma. After 20 days of this treatment, a young patient loses 40 percent muscle mass, and gets mouth or vocal cord trauma, as well as possible pulmonary or heart complications. It is for this reason that old or already weak people can’t withstand the treatment and die. Many of us are in this boat... so stay safe unless you want to take the chance of ending up here. This is not the flu. For your own sake and those around you, please follow the rules. Stay safe and well!

Letters to the Editor CYCLISTS IN NEED OF A LESSON
Dear Sir, Wherever you live in any part of the world cyclists say they are unfairly treated. In Shepparton there are three types of cyclist, those that follow the rules, then there are others who are just ignorant of what’s around them and of course the group of younger cyclists who think it’s fun to not obey the rules and to scare anyone on the footpath or road. I have seen many of the first lot and praise them for their efforts but today I also found twice as many of what can only be called
idiots, in the latter two categories. Daily I walk my dog and cyclists come from behind and fail to give any warning they are there. My dog (a rescue Dog) usually lets me know someone is coming as she has been hurt by many a cyclist in her past life. Today, no warning and wham my dog goes straight into the bike who carries on. I shout out where was the warning and got told I rang the bell. If that was so, my dog would have heard it but she didn’t. Then not two minutes later two teenagers on mountain bikes came up behind us on the footpath and tried to run us down. The

They then shot out onto the road and drove in the middle of the lane facing oncoming cars. There is a group of cyclists in Shepparton hell bent on doing the wrong thing and no point in talking to the Police about it they don’t want to know, they don’t have the resources or inclination to catch these hoons on two wheels. They also seem powerless to catch the 4-wheeled hoon car races who plague the Friday and Saturday nights. From now on I will be wearing a body
Council adopts policy to reduce plastic use at its events continued from front page THE policy outlines Council’s commitment to eliminating single use plastic bags, plates, bowls, balloons, cups and cutlery, and limiting the use of water bottles and plastic packaging at its events. The policy will be implemented with a one-year transition period, allowing for distribution of resources and information, adaption and community awareness. “The Policy aims to assist Council in taking the appropriate measures to manage our environmental impact, which we are always striving to do,” Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah said. “Council’s events calendar has significantly grown in
recent years, with more than 250 supported events in our region creating large amounts of single use plastic waste that are not biodegradable. Organisations such as Facebook group, Zero Waste Shepparton have long advocated for the reduction of waste materials. Greater Shepparton City Council have to deal with more than 66,000 tonnes of waste a year, perhaps this measure might go some way towards reducing that.

Wellbeing Wednesdays at the Hub FOR new arrivals and refugees, there is a new level of stress that impacts their wellbeing beyond some of the struggles they may have faced prior to their arrival. Isolation is having a profound effect on the mental health welfare of the community at large, often amplified in the case of those who are still making the adjustments to living in a new country. Primary Care Connect, as the name implies, has a role in the community to assist people to remain connected and healthy. Leading people to tune into how they are dealing with stress is one function, refugee councillor advocates, Bec Nicoll and Sonali Jayasundera, endeavour to engage people, and in particular women in new arrival communities to recognise in themselves. “There is a relationship between our feelings or emotions and our bodies and we lead people to understand that connection as a means of reducing stress largely through movement and exercise,” said Bec. “Because of the isolation requirement, we undertake a lot of our communications on Zoom or by phone with the aid of a translator,” said Sonali. “The essential mission is to keep people connected.” Primary Care Connect is a non-profit community health organisation located at 399 Wyndham Street, Shepparton and can be contacted on 5832 3200

Early Years draft plan out for consultation
A MAJORITY of young children growing up in the Greater Shepparton region have the benefit of being able to attend Council run maternal and child health centres, playgroups, childcare and kindergarten. At the July Council meeting, the Council endorsed the draft, Greater Shepparton Best Start Early Years Plan 2020-2025 and released it for public exhibition for a period of four weeks. The Greater Shepparton Best Start Early Years Plan 2020-2025 is a new six-year plan with the aim of improving learning, health and wellbeing outcomes for children aged 0 to six years. Greater Shepparton’s first combined Best Start Early Years Plan was developed in 2006.

Skin cancers do not hibernate during winter WE live in the skin cancer nation, and looking out for melanomas is a reality we must all accept. While getting a complete skin check may not be top of mind for many people in the depths of winter, it is one of the best times to book an appointment, according to Dr Matthew Wong of the GV Skin and Specialist Centre. “In winter time, we all tend to cover up in layers and any new spot or changes to the skin may go unnoticed. Hence, this is a good time to get the spots checked by medical professionals,” he said. A skin check is a simple, 30-minute procedure everyone should have done, especially if you are over 40.
Dr Matthew Wong and Dr Wil Chong at the GV Skin and Specialist Centre will take the time to examine every mole in a relaxed 30-minute appointment. “People tend to procrastinate and put off the skin check they meant to have,” Dr Chong said. “Take action now, and book an appointment for a non-invasive skin assessment. If things are picked up early, then you get a better prognosis.” The GV Skin and Specialist Centre is located at 20 Wyndham St, Shepparton, and can be contacted on (03) 5820 0500.

THE SWEETEST THINGS... Mia Ginga, of Riverside Plaza’s Wendy’s Milk Bar, can make the perfect cake for any occasion. Photo: Struan Jones.
Mark sweet occasions with the perfect cake T H ER E are several ways to make a child happy. You can provide a nurturing learning environment, give them attention and watch them grow. If that fails, you can always give them ice cream. For Shepparton’s Mia Ginga, she has plenty of experience in doing both. The former kindergarten teacher has spent a lifetime looking after children, and now feels just at home running Wendy’s Milk Bar at Kialla’s Riverside Plaza. Mia is a genius with cakes. Years of doing arts and crafts with children prepared her perfectly to learn the fine art of cake decorating at Wendy’s. She now makes custom cakes for birthdays, retirement parties, or baby gender-reveals. She’s even made cakes for divorce parties. “Why it’s a happy moment when someone gets divorced, I didn’t even know,” she said. “But he looked happy, so I made him the cake he wanted. I couldn’t even put it in the display cabinet because it was a bit rude.” Celebrations aside, Mia said the best part of her job is seeing happy people. “I always love the look on kids’ faces when you give them ice cream,” she said. Wendy’s Milk Bar is at Riverside Plaza in Kialla, on the Goulburn Valley Highway. Dairy-free and gluten-free premade cakes are available, and all menu items are now available for order and delivery via Menulog.

Community sports clubs need funding to survive Covid-19 COM MU N I T Y sport has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a recent survey has revealed about one quarter of all community sports clubs are at risk of closure in the next six months. According to the survey, conducted by the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF), more than 16,000 community sports clubs nationally are thought to be at risk of closure if funding support isn’t provided within the next six months. On top of the financial impact, 70 percent of small clubs forecasted a reduction in the number of participants, due to loss of interest caused by the period of inactivity and concerns around health and hygiene, while 43 percent forecasted a decline in volunteers. New guide to help Victoria’s farmers & mineral explorers work together V IC TOR I A N fa r mers a nd m i nera l explorers have released an updated jointlydeveloped Land Access Guide to inform landowners on their rights when mineral explorers seek access to their land. The Land Access Guide, developed in partnership between Mineral Council Aust ralia (MC A), Vic toria and the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is an introduction to Victoria’s mineral resources legislation to help guide farmers and
promote best practice for explorers. James Sorahan, executive director, MCA Victoria, said, “Mining acknowledges that the prospect of exploration can be a concern for landholders, particularly for f a r m e r s w it h a lon g - s t a nd i n g intergenerational connection to their land. “Victoria’s minerals industry recognises its responsibility as a temporary custodian of land to contribute to sustainable land use outcomes, including making land
available for farming after mining ends.” VFF Land Management chair, Gerry Leach said, “The collaborative relationship between the VFF and MCA has improved the process of land access for many Victorian farmers. The updated guide is another helpful tool for farmers when access is sought to their land.” The guide sets out the rights and obligations of explorer and landowners, tips on effective consultation and access
to information, along with compensation a r r a n g e m e nt s a nd e n forc e m e nt of exploration licence conditions. The guide seeks to support respectful relationships between landowners and explorers and builds on government and industry tools to support local communities. The guide is available to be downloaded from the MCA website.
Growing trees for the needs of the North THE Goulburn Valley is famous for its trees and is known far and wide as the fruit bowl of the state. Whether productive fruit trees or ornamental species, trees are an investment in the future, planted to last generations. Speciality Trees of Benalla is a large-scale ornamental tree growing nursery in our region and is now expanding into commercial fruit tree production. Established in 1977, Speciality Trees is now in the hands of Hamish and Gaby Mitchell, and the Benalla nursery is one of three production sites for the company that has about 100,000 units on the ground covering 320 ornamental varieties. The science of growing a healthy tree that will last
generations is Hamish Mitchell’s passion. “It feels strange to say, but we are not driven by making more money or producing more units than everyone else, but more the need to make a difference through the quality of our stock with valued best-practice processes” he said. For the next two Fridays, the nursery will be holding an open day clearance sale with a mix of bareroot trees, containerised advanced and super-advanced trees available for quick sale. In light of COVID-19 conditions, please call ahead for an appointment on 0447 608 872 or visit the website at specialitytrees.com.au. The nursery is at 1317 Mansfield Road, Benalla.

NO WINNER ROUND 8 $225 JACKPOT Football Followers have the chance to WIN BIG during the 2020 AFL football season with Fairleys IGA/The Adviser Football Tipping Competition. Each week there will be a prize of $25 to be spent at Fairleys IGA Supermarket. All you have to do is place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. Be careful with your selections as only correct entries will go into the draw for the weekly $25 voucher. If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted. Entries will only be accepted at the office, 219-225 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, no later than 5pm on each Friday during 2020, unless stated otherwise due to early matches being played. Sports clubs welcome cash injection STILL HITTING IT... GV Squash Club president, Christian Lecompte, with junior player, Haley Gorringe, 16. The Shepparton Squash Centre has seen a resurgence in player numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic. Photo: Struan Jones.
Players flock to court W I T H several big-ticket senior sport competitions abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some other, less mainstream sports have seen an uptick in interest. Golf is one game experiencing a reawakening, and squash, that quirky, noisy game played behind closed doors in high-ceilinged sheds, is another. President of the Goulburn Valley Squash Club, Christian Lecompte, said the club has attracted more members as a result of the pandemic. While its winter competition has been pushed back to spring and its annual international tournament cancelled, it hasn’t deterred dozens of members getting on court every week. “We’ve got more people coming down who can’t play other sports,” Christian said.
Christian, who has been playing squash for 40 years since starting as a teenager, said whenever he’s travelled abroad, he’s taken his squash racquet and found courts to play, from New Guinea to London. “We now play a lot of racquetball through winter, preferring to play squash in the spring and summer when the conditions are warmer and the rubber ball performs better,” he said. “It’s a great sport. It’s indoors, so you can play day or night, wet or dry. People have probably had enough of Netflix and are coming down with friends to play.” The Shepparton Squash Centre, located at 83 Archer Street, is open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Sunday morning, and can be contacted on (03) 5821 5050.
STRUGGLING sporting clubs in the region have received a financial boost with $1000 Community Sports Sector grants handed out as part of the State Government’s COVID-19 Survival Package. According to Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp, the grants are intended to help 24 amateur clubs get back to play once Coronavirus restrictions are lifted. Recipients included five Scout groups, three tennis clubs, and four golf clubs, among others. At the Mooroopna Golf Club, manager, Craig Prothero, said the cash would go towards new distance signage on the upgraded driving range. Since emerging from the initial March lockdown when golfing was prohibited, golf courses in Victoria have experienced a renaissance. As a sport that naturally allows for easy social distancing, golf is one of few sports suitable in the midst of the lockdown. Mr Prothero said while the gaming and bistro sides of the club were very quiet, action on the course was booming. Stage one of the club’s $35,000 driving range upgrade is complete, which included a $6000 purchase of 10,000 golf balls. “Golf seems to be back in a big way, as an upside of the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, the weather has been great recently,” Mr Prothero said.
Sanitiser donation has clubs rubbing hands with delight BU R SONS Auto Pa r ts Sheppa r ton has donated a whopping 380 litres of liquid hand sanitiser to AFL Goulburn Murray (AFL GM) to distribute among junior clubs. The donation, worth $8000, will go some way to easing the financial pressures of junior clubs which must adhere
to strict cleaning protocols to keep junior netballers and footballers safe. Recipients include clubs from the Goulburn Valley League, Goulburn Campaspe Junior Football League and the Shepparton District Junior Football League. AFL GM commercial and operations manager, Zara
O’Keeffe said she would work with clubs to distribute the sanitiser. “It’s wonderful that despite the uncertain times that we are operating in, that we still have businesses that are willing to reach out to our leagues and clubs and assist with meeting these protocols,” she said.
Up there in flight... Shepparton United’s Sean Thompson (right) wins the tap against Shepparton Swans ruck Ty Sutherland in United’s 8.8.56 to 15.9.99 win over the Swans on Saturday at Princess Park. Goulburn Valley League junior footballers and netballers relished the opportunity to get back to competition as weekend sport brought back some normality to an interrupted 2020 season.
