We wish you a Merry Christmas Carols by Candlelight online performance this Sunday GREATER Shepparton’s Carols by Candlelight will look a bit different this weekend, but the same level of passion has gone into its preparation. This Sunday evening, you will be able to enjoy the much-loved community event, traditionally held in Shepparton’s Queens Gardens, from your home as the annual celebration is broadcast online this year. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, said it was important we celebrate and reconnect as a community. “We have had to miss out on a lot of our favourite events this year, so Council is extremely pleased to be able to bring this performance for the community to celebrate going into the New Year,” she said. Talented performers from across the Goulburn Valley, including Moara Smith (pictured) have come together to perform everyone’s favourite festive songs at Riverlinks West Side theatre, which will be available to stream online from 7pm this Sunday, December 20, on Council’s website, YouTube channel and Facebook page, or listen live on ONEFM 98.5. Council working with growers AS the end of year approaches, the demand for fruit pickers becomes even more critical with cherries already being harvested and stone fruits soon to come on board. Greater Shepparton City Council and Fruit Growers Victoria have been working together on a new campaign to attract seasonal workers. The Shepparton region is one of the largest fruit producing regions in Australia and along with all the support industries, dominates our local economy making the need even more critical. The Victorian and Federal Governments are both providing support and incentives for the growers to upgrade facilities and for pickers to make the move to the area. While the industry has collected a fair share of bad press, these instances are being addressed and it offers plenty of opportunities for those looking for jobs in agriculture.

SHEPPARTON is known for its fruit, and 2020 is known for its pandemic and the tireless work of medical professionals to keep people safe and healthy. So in recognition of the efforts put in by COVID-19 workers at Shepparton’s GV Health, the Rotary Club of Shepparton Central dropped by the hospital this week to donate 11 boxes of the finest seasonal fruit as a thank you, thanks to Finer Fruit. Rotary Club of Shepparton Central president, Geoff Dobson, said the club had wanted to acknowledge the work done by the COVID-19 team at the hospital, and felt that a donation of local fruit would be a way to express gratitude on behalf of the community. “They’ve put themselves in danger and have been under a lot of stress this year,” Mr Dobson said.

Winding down this Christmas with a good glass of wine Regional wine expert, Paul Phillips, names his top six vinos for the holiday period CHRISTMAS time is the time to drink good wine. Getting the right vino to match your Christmas feast is like icing on the Christmas cake. Wine expert Paul Phillips, who runs Shepparton’s Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre on Corio Street, has shared his top picks for both red and white wines this Christmas. According to Paul, it’s easy to celebrate winemakers throughout the local rich, grapegrowing regions. The reds Paul has named as his top picks all pair well with red meat dishes such as rich casseroles and steaks. When pairing wine with red meat recipes, the wine should stand up to the richness of the food. A good rule of thumb is to pair red meat with red wine. The whites will compliment any seafood or poultry dishes.
REDS
Maygars Hill 2018 Shiraz $30, Strathbogie Ranges From the winemaker: “2018 was a season that rained hard in the beginning and then stopped. Occasional showers saved the day enabling a tiny crop of deliciously small berries. “We fermented some of the bunches of berries to add to the complexity. It yielded a
wine with dark chocolate earthy varietal fruit characteristics. It was then carefully matched with French oak where it matured for 14 months. This is a complex wine with a good balance and long finish on the palate.” Wine by Sam 2018 Heathcote Shiraz - The Victorian $22, Heathcote wine region From the winemaker: “It has a deep red colour, and is quite aromatic with blackcurrant and sweet spice aromatics. There is also a chocolatey note – this is partly from oak maturation, but also a regional characteristic associated with good Heathcote fruit. The tannins have a lovely ripe plushness to them, and the wine feels rich and full bodied.” Bogie Panther 2019 Pinot Noir $25, Strathbogie Ranges Cool climate, single vineyard, hand-picked, partial whole bunch ferment. Basket pressed after 14 days. Oak maturation for 10 months prior to bottling. Unfiltered and un-fined.
WHITES

palate there is mouth-watering limey/fresh apple flavours, coupled with taut acidity, and fabulous length. A European-styled Riesling that is produced off-dry that always has great ageing potential. Longleat Murchison Cuvee Brut $19, Nagambie Lakes This Australian classic style is a blend of three select parcels of Chardonnay wines to provide a balance of delicate fruits and yeasty notes with a firm acid backbone. The fruit flavours reflect white stone fruits and citrus. The Brut style is fresh and crisp with just a hint of sweetness. Enjoy chilled on any occasion. Allira 2019 Sauvignon Blanc $15, Strathbogie Ranges A single vineyard wine that features lifted aromas of passionfruit, pears, guava and citrus fruits with a hint of herbaceousness. The same flavours are evident on a refreshingly zesty palate. Crisp, clean and very drinkable.

FIERY TIMES... Sunset captured at the Winton Wetlands by photographer, Rene Martens. Monday, December 21 will be the longest day of the year.
Here comes the sun THIS Monday will be the longest day of the year. And no, not because it’s Monday, or even the last Monday before Christmas. It’s literally the longest day of the year. Monday, December 21 is the summer solstice for those who live Down Under, where the hours of daylight compared to night-time max out. From Monday onwards, the length of daylight each day will start to recede – despite temperatures continuing to rise through January and February. Daytime on Monday will last a lengthy 14 hours, 38 minutes, and 52 seconds.
Compare this to the winter solstice, on June 21, where daylight lasted for only a brief nine hours, 40 seconds, and 29 seconds. Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many cultures, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Traditionally, in many temperate regions (especially Europe), the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and referred to as ‘midsummer’. In Australia however, it’s barely noted, lest it’s mentioned in a local newspaper. You’re welcome.
Classic Moscow Mule MOSCOW Mules are delightfully fizzy drinks made with fiery ginger beer, vodka and fresh lime. Moscow mu les a re ref resh i ng on hot summer days, sure, but they’re also holiday-appropriate thanks to the strong ginger flavour. They strike that elusive balance between spicy, sweet and strong. Moscow mules are super easy to make. You’ll need just three basic ingredients: Vodka Ginger beer Fresh lime The ginger beer component makes the biggest difference between a so-so and fantastic Moscow mule, so choose wisely! Instructions: 1. Fill a tumbler with plenty of ice. Pour in one shot of vodka and squeeze the juice out of half a lime. 2. Fill the glass with ginger beer and gently swirl it with a spoon once to mix.

Christmas and all the other holidays
THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES... A Festivus tradition, as portrayed by Jerry Stiller, who played the character of Frank Costanza in the long-running American sitcom television series, Seinfeld.
By Steve Hutcheson WITH Christmas dominating the season, there is a tendency to overlook that almost half of the local population identify as nonChristian and celebrate the season in many different ways. Based on our last census, there were more than 27 percent who identified as non-religious and a further 11 percent who left religion blank. For an imperceptibly small number of people, the season is overshadowed by the fabricated celebration of Festivus, a non-commercial holiday celebrated on December 23 first appearing on a Seinfeld episode with traditional practices of ‘Airing of Grievances’ and ‘Feats of Strength’ and ‘Festivus Miracles’ while having a ‘Festivus Dinner’. Feats of Strength involves a wrestling match that concludes with the head of the household being pinned to the floor preceded by the Airing of Grievances where people lash out how others at the table have disappointed them during the year. For the remaining 15 percent of our community who practice other religions such as Islam or Hinduism, the season has the capacity to transcend all the differences in the spirit of ending the year on a note of

What to do with unwanted presents
HELPING OUT... People Supporting People volunteers, Azem Elmaz, Brett O’Keeffe, Kim O’Keeffe, and president of the Kiwanis Club of Mooroopna, Louis D’Amore. Photo: Struan Jones
A time for giving SHEPPARTON non-profit organisation, People Supporting People, which raises money for soup kitchens and other people in need, took receipt of donations from the Kiwanis Club International and the Commonwealth Bank this week. The money will go towards putting together Christmas hampers and donated toys to people in ned in Greater Shepparton. People Supporting People is the group behind the Saturday barbecues out the front of Coles and Kmart on Vaughan Street in Shepparton, while the the Kiwanis Club of Mooroopna, established in 1978, has done vast amounts of community work.
By Steve Hutcheson FOR ECAST retail spending this Christmas across Australia is expected to be over $54.3B, an increase of 2.8 percent from the $52.9B of retail expenditure during the 2019 Christmas trading period. What is of concern is the amount of that which will be spent on unwanted presents, the floral shirt from Grandma that went out of fashion twenty years ago and it would be the last thing you would think of wearing outside the house (trust me, I have been there). Here, we are some simple things you can do with your unwanted presents to ensure that they fulfil their purpose and don’t go to waste. 1. Return or exchange it. If Grandma sees your sad face and distain, she might offer to let you return it. All you’ll need is proof of purchase to be able to take it back to the store. Then again, she might just get grumpy and never talk to you again. 2. Sell it. Selling your unwanted Christmas present could be an option, especially if you want to avoid having an awkward conversation with the gift-buyer about returning it. Gumtree or Facebook groups are possible options. Just make sure grannie is not in any of the group's first. 3. Unlock its potential. If you’ve got a gift card for a retailer you know you won’t use, maybe you are a girl who prefers perfumes and makeup over a hardware voucher, you might be able to sell it to someone who can make better use of it. Check with friends or colleagues who might benefit from it and be willing to help you out by buying it from you. 4. Rent it out. Renting out your Christmas gift, allows you to make money from something that might otherwise just be sitting around gathering dust. If there is a Facebook group for that sort of thing, you can try to rent it out there. If not, you can spend your holidays setting up a renting group of like-minded people in the same predicament.

GIFTING FAILS... They happen. But there are many things you can do with unwanted gifts if they end up under your tree. Photo: Supplied
5. Regift it. Regifting is a great way of passing on your present to someone it might be more suited too. You might give that ugly shirt to your brother-in-law you don’t like for his birthday for instance. It will also save you money on buying something for him and you will get pleasure out of watching his face when he opens it. Be sure to have a watertight excuse ready if he ends up asking you for a gift receipt to exchange it. 6. Swap it. Back to Facebook. You’re unlikely to be the only person with a gift that isn’t suited to them. Keep an eye out for strained smiles around the Christmas tree as you might be able to swap gifts with someone else, so you both end up happy. 7. Donate it. Last resort, you can donate your unwanted Christmas gifts to charity but just do it sensibly. This time of year will see them being inundated because people have not tried options 1 to 6. Also, make sure Grannie doesn’t do your Christmas shopping there, you might get it back again next year.

A new approach to Christmas By Jeremy Rensford, chair of the Shepparton Ministers’ Association I A P P R E C I AT E this paper giving me an opportunity to share thoughts with our local community through this column, and as a local Christian leader, I’m aware of how important this time of year is to Christians and indeed our entire district. For m a ny, it ’s a t i me of joyou s celebration, family time, gift giving and receiving, great food and time off work to name a few. Unfortunately, for others it’s a season that they’ve come to dread. And with the year our planet has had, I’d imagine that the difficulties some face around this time of year will only be exacerbated. For example, a local school chaplain has told me about anxious children worried about COVID and what Christmas will be like this year. For separated families, or those that have family members facing addiction issues or maybe have had a loved
one pass away, for example, Christmas time can be a time they may have come to dread. Why am I mentioning these things? (it does come across as a bit negative). Well, the reason is I’d implore everyone to keep in mind the situation others are facing and if you have opportunity, try and make it a better time for them. From something as simple as a smile and a warm conversation to checking in with someone you’re concerned about. The reason for Christmas – Jesus – implores us to “love our neighbour (fellow humankind) as we love ourselves.” So, the question I’d love us to consider is not what present am I going to get, but rather what present can I be to someone else? Don’t get me wrong, this is a wonderful time of year - remembering the birth of Jesus Christ and all the great celebration that comes with this – but a big part of what He’d want us to do is help others that are in need. He never would want us to get away from that, and as a passionate member of the Greater Shepparton community, I’m glad he’s like that. Time for a new approach to Christmas! Blessings to all.
