Government still bypassing Shepparton By Struan Jones I N DEPEN DEN T Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed, has called on the State Government to urgently release the business case for the proposed Shepparton bypass project. The bypass includes three individual projects which have been brought together under one business case to provide an alternative north-south route for trucks, taking them away from the Shepparton CBD. Students sing to 200 years of education history By Struan Jones STUDENTS from Shepparton’s Notre Dame College and St Brendan's Primary School have become a central part in marking 200 years of Catholic education in Australia, with the filming of a music video featuring popular Catholic priest and contemporary Christian singer-songwriter, Fr Rob Galea, at the school

to mark the bicentenary celebration. ‘Faith in the Future’, a song written by Fr Galea for the occasion, was originally set to have its music video filmed at the Sydney Opera House, with clips from schools across the country. However, when the Opera House became unavailable due to Coronavirus restrictions,

Shepparton emerged as the best viable option. Students joined Fr Galea on stage for the recording, which will be seen by countless viewers across the country. “I'm really grateful - so grateful - for Shepp, opening the doors so quickly for us!” Fr Galea said, speaking at Notre Dame College last Thursday afternoon. NEWS BIG BUILD... Shepparton’s new housing estates, such as The Vines (pictured) have boomed over the last 12 months on the back of strong migration to the regions, low interest rates and government incentives to build. Photo: Katelyn Morse

Record exodus from capital cities continued in September quarter By Struan Jones A RECORD number of ‘tree changers’ have left capital cities for the regions, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). In the September quarter of 2020, capital cities had a net loss of 11,200 people from internal migration nationwide - the largest quarterly net loss on record. For Greater Melbourne, there was a net loss of 7,400 people in the September 2020 quarter, including 4,600 people to the rest of the state (the rest heading interstate, mainly to Queensland). The figures represent an exodus from Melbourne nearly eight-times greater than what was occurring 12 months prior in the September quarter of 2019. Incoming residents to the regions have caused a surge in the real estate market, with median house prices in Regional Victoria up 9.2 percent on average in the December quarter alone, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. In Shepparton, that figure is 8.3 percent. Rental yields in Shepparton are also up, outpacing the rest of regional Victoria at 4.7 percent, compared to the regional average of 4.2 percent.

Peter Mintern, the director of Development Edge, one of the leading developers in residential land estates across Greater Shepparton, described the sales and enquiry rate to his company as “unprecedented”. “The sales and enquiry rates are unprecedented, there’s no doubt about that,” he said. “We track across all our projects the sales rates against what we might otherwise assume, and we’ve exponentially exceeded that, to the point where we’ve sold out stages of developments without even turning soil. “In a general sense you’re talking probably two years' worth of stock is being sold in the last 12 months.” Mr Mintern said there were plenty of anecdotal reports of Melburnians relocating – or returning home – to Greater Shepparton. “There have certainly been enquiries and people who have relocated back to Shepparton people who are working remotely that would otherwise be in the office in Melbourne,” he said. “I think even if it’s people who have relocated and are renting, you’re talking about people who are surging the population by relocating whether they’re buying or not, and they’re also providing for investments.”

Putting new life into fashion By Steve Hutcheson WE are all guilty, well I am not but my wife is, of filling wardrobes and drawers with items of clothing that for one reason or another, eventually becomes surplus to our needs, some without ever being worn. Having studied fashion at RMIT and worked her way through the industry, Shepparton's Nicole Morse is trying a new approach to sustainably empty out some closets and put those garments into new ones. Regional Rummage looks at eliminating the enormous waste that the fashion industry has promulgated over the years. Nicole is a member of Zero Waste, a Facebook group in Shepparton with over

Along with some 60-plus other sellers who have perfectly good clothes to clear, having discussed the idea with some friends, Nicole pulled together a pop-up market to take place in Victory Hall, Tatura. There is room for a few more sellers and the event will be happening indoors and outside in true market fashion. Regional Rummage will happen on Sunday, Februar y 21, from 10am to 2pm at Victory Hall, 75 to 81 Hogan St. Tatura. GV Health a vaccination hub to administer Pfizer-BioNTech jabs by end of month

By Struan Jones GOULBURN Valley Health has been announced as one of nine COVID-19 hospital vaccination hubs in Victoria, with a rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to commence by the end of the month. GV Health chief executive, Matt Sharp, said the hospital was preparing to ensure the hospital could store the vaccines at the required temperatures and making sure there were adequate healthcare workers to administer the jab. “This is a pivotal time for our region, Victoria and Australia. GV Health is excited

to be playing a key role in the COVID19 vaccination program for our local community,” Mr Sharp said. The first group to be vaccinated as part of ‘Phase 1a’ include frontline healthcare workers, staff and residents at aged care and disability facilities, quarantine and border workers. ‘Phase 1b’ will include all other healthcare workers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 55 and others over 70 who are not in aged care. SAM on the lookout for café operator By Struan Jones ART, to some, is something which touches the senses, which provokes an emotion and which stays in the mind for a while. And what is a cup of coffee? Well, it touches your senses, it provokes an emotion and you usually don’t forget about the good coffees you drink. So what would an art museum even

be if it didn’t involve coffee? To fill this void, the Shepparton Art Museum is searching for a hospitality operator to run a café, a separate roof top bar and multifunction area in the new venue. T he new SA M , desig ned by architect Denton Corker Marshall, is scheduled to open in the second half of 2021.

The café and fully furnished kitchen are on Level 1 with an adjoint deck/ grass area and is accessible through the building and the grass area leading to the walking path at the lake. The roof top bar and multifunction area are on the Level 4, with a roof top viewing deck. Applications close on Friday, February 26.

Getting all the ducks in a row By Steve Hutcheson PERHAPS one of the more emotive pastimes that takes place each year is the opening of the duck hunting season and the conflict that arises between hunters, environmentalists and animal liberationists. This year, the State Government has once more cut back the number of days hunters are able to shoot, and a bag limit has been set at two ducks per day. Game Management Victoria (GMA) has issued the limits due to lower-than-average bird and breeding numbers. The 2021 season will start on Wednesday, May 26 and will last 20 days, closing on Monday, June 14. Hunting start times will also be delayed until 8am for the first five days of the season. The GMA and partner agencies, including Victoria Police, will be patrolling both public lands and private properties to ensure compliance with hunting, animal

No ducking politics when it comes to duck shooting

By Struan Jones T H E Leader of the Victorian Nationals, Peter Walsh, has hit back at the State Government’s decision to restrict the 2021 duck shooting season to 20 days and apply bag limits of two ducks per day, describing the decision as selling out to secure “radical green votes in the city”. M r Walsh, the Member for Murray Plains, said the decision was motivated by politics, not science. “With current data showing duck numbers are at a sustainable level and following above-average rainfall in eastern Australia in the past 12 months, the hunting community had

looked forward to a full 12-week season – as legislated,” he said. “For those who think this is just about duck hunting – it’s not. The Andrews Labor Government will sell out any Victorian to secure radical green votes in the city.” For the Greens’ part, leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, who represents the Northern Metropolitan Region in the state’s Legislative Council and supports a ban on duck shooting, said the season would go ahead “despite growing community opposition and native duck numbers declining every year.”

Lovell points finger over rollout of fruit tree netting grants

ASSET PROTECTION... Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, has asked for an explanation of why a netting grant program has not yet been rolled out to Victorian horticulturalists. Photo: Supplied

By Struan Jones THE Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, has called out what she perceives as the State Government’s failure to develop a funding program to help horticulturalists to install tree netting, despite being provided funding from the Federal Government to do so. Speaking during the first Victorian parliamentary sitting week for 2021, Ms Lovell sought an explanation from the Agriculture Minister, Mary-Anne Thomas, as to why the funding had not been made available to growers. In November 2019, the Federal Government announced funding of $4M to Victoria to implement a horticultural netting grant program to protect crops from weather and pests. According to the Victorian Department of Agriculture, they were approached by the Government to implement the program in mid-2020.

T he scheme is a dolla r-for- dolla r arrangement with a maximum of $300,000 for each individual recipient. Ms Lovell compared the Victorian rollout to that in South Australia, where 80 percent of funding to SA growers has already been distributed. Grower services manager at industry body Fruit Growers Victoria, Michael Crisera, said the rollout of the grants had been slow, but admitted that it wasn’t a priority for orchardists right now – nor the most pressing issue - who are in the peak period of harvesting fruit despite labour shortages. He said he hoped the grants could be sorted over the next two months to have next season’s crop covered. According to the Department of Agriculture, the program will be implemented at a time that does not conflict with harvest activities.

Students sing to 200 years of education history “THE music video is going to be shot here, and we’re going to be recording the vocals tonight, so very quick and all for a million people just in a matter of moments.” The Bendigo-based Fr Galea, who has been featured in national press as well as on Channel 10’s The Project, was a contestant on The X Factor in 2015. He has released eight music projects, toured abroad, and written a book. He was supposed to spend all of 2020 travelling the country and visiting Catholic schools, talking with and performing to

students, however that plan was forced to go virtual. A former resident of Shepparton, he had high praise: “Shepparton has such great gifts in the arts,” he said. “I’ve worked as a chaplain here and I’ve worked at schools across Australia. I’ve always thought of Shepparton as having the best voices and the best performance that I’ve seen in many places. Even our liturgies are just extraordinary here.”

Sheed calls on Transport Minister to urgently release business case for bypass project continued from front page THE business case for the project was funded in the 2017-18 State Budget and was due to be released to the public in 2019. Transport Minister, Jacinta Allan, had revised this release date to late 2020. The Federal Government has already committed $208M to the project. In urging the Minister to release the business case, Ms Sheed told parliament last week: “The Shepparton bypass is an important safety and freight project for our region, allowing for a second river crossing of the Goulburn River north of Shepparton. “It will be a critical part of the freight supply chain network locally and as part of the national highway system, removing much heavy traffic from the central business districts of Shepparton and Mooroopna.” About 25 percent of all trucks registered in Victoria are from the Goulburn Valley,

and a quarter of the value of the state’s agriculture produce comes from the region. Minister Allan’s office did not respond to invitations from The Adviser to comment on the issue nor gave any indication on when the business case would be released. The Adviser received no details of when the business case would be released. Ms Sheed said the Shepparton and Mooroopna communities had done everything asked of them and it is time for the State Government to step up. “My community has done everything asked of it to procure the funding for this bypass, including breaking down what is a very major project into much smaller, manageable parts. “It is very important that we as a community understand what is involved in achieving the transport outcomes we need and what the cost will be. The business case will help to inform us, and I call on the minister to release it.”

Is it a parma

or parmie? SITTING DOWN TO PLATE SIZED MEALS... Four ladies from Mooroopna at the local Cricketers Arms Hotel: Ros Cosgriff, Bev Longley, Julie Gould and Nola Williams. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

By Steve Hutcheson PUBS across Australia are known to serve up the definitive parmigiana, a slice of veal or chicken, dowsed in egg and bread crumbs and fried to a perfect golden hue. For much of their existence, Aussie country pubs were the primary source for dining out for anyone living in regional Australia. Meals at affordable prices matched by the sumptuous portions to cater to hard working shearers, farm hands and other manual workers and travellers who frequented them. Even today, pubs have maintained the same atmosphere they always have and

provide much the same menu with a few new and exotic dishes being added. Plate sized steaks, racks of lamb and bowls of prawns in a delicious sauce are frequent dishes to be found on a typical pub’s menu. Meals might be served in the lounge or at the bar and more frequently during the warmer weather, in the typical beer garden that accompany many regional pubs. But the parmie still rules supreme - tender, juicy and a tasty crust offset with a delicious melting cheese fill. Mouth-watering just thinking about it. The debate over the abbreviated name will go on as long as pubs continue to serve them.

The HIDDEN gems of the countryside EVERY country pub has a story to tell. These historic mainstays were probably one of the first buildings to be constructed in a new town, and they are still key landmarks. The casual dining scene in pubs and clubs of the region is fantastic, and there has never been a better time to plan a day out around a visit to a country pub.

home& garden

Choose native plants By Stephanie Holliday LANDSCAPED gardens are the finishing touch on a new property, elevating the visual appeal of your home significantly. Considering we live in a regional city and surrounds, the use of native plants would ensure your garden is able to cope with the elements and suits the natural landscape of our region. To ensure the successful establishment of plants it is important to match plant variety with aspect, drainage and soil type characteristics of your land.

By Stephanie Holliday

BUILDING a new home or renovating an existing dwellling is an exciting venture. While many of us put ample thought into the aesthetics of our homes, sometimes the sustainability aspects of our choices can be overlooked or rushed through. Ensuring you consider the environmental impacts of your selections not only benefits the Earth but also can help you save on running costs long term. “In the near future the homes that we build may need to meet a 7-star energy rating requirement, so it is worth considering these options during the construction to ensure you can meet these requirements, it will also make

By planting native plants in your garden, you will assist in the preservation of the natural landscape and enhance natural biodiversity. This will in turn attract native fauna to the garden by providing a source of food and shelter. In terms of maintenance, local plants do not ‘escape’ from gardens to become environmental weeds. They require less water and fertiliser than many exotic species thus reducing salinity and limiting the amount of nutrients entering natural waterways, helping preserve our

environment. Tracy Lamont, manager of Billabong Garden Complex, said her top picks for native plants would be Westringias, Xanthorrhoeas, Grevilleas. “Using native plants means you create an

Sustainable building choices your home less expensive to heat and cool in the long run,” Jody Mintern, of Hotondo Homes Shepparton, said. “If a client asked for advice about making their home more energy efficient, we look at their choice of block and the best way to position the house to help create an energy efficient home. If the block presents a challenge, then we can step through their options.” Here are just some of the factors to consider when keeping sustainability in mind: Wall Insulation Proper insulation is key to keeping your home’s temperature comfortable and avoiding the use of heating and cooling systems where

possible. Insulation allows the temperature to remain balanced even in winter or summer and is a great way to help reduce your carbon footprint. Double-glazed windows Although costly, double-glazed windows are highly efficient, reducing your heat loss or gain by up to 30 percent when compared to singleglazed windows. Sun-utilising design elements Not only do skylights look stunning and allow for natural light to infiltrate your home, they are energy efficient year-round. They can help to light and heat your home during the colder months, as well as keep it cool during the warm days of the year.

ecosystem in your own backyard. This provides a habitat for native birds, lizards and the like,” Tracy said. When consulting with your landscape gardener or if doing yourself, keep native plants in mind when designing your layout.

Choosing energy efficient appliances Energy efficient appliances not only reduce the environmental impacts running your home incurs but they also reduce your running costs, meaning in the long run, you’ll see savings on your energy bills. Energy efficient power options such as solar Solar panels absorb energy from the sun. This energy is transported to the inverter which converts that energy into usable electricity that is used by the household and the appliances in it. Any electricity that is not used by the household will be transported back into the main electricity grid and a credit will be given to the homeowner on their next electricity bill for this excess power.

ICONIC... Domination of the land, the sea, and the air.

SETTLE IN... Luxurious comfort defines the cockpit of the 450 SE.

A ticket to Gold Class By Struan Jones AT the Frankfurt International Motor Show back in 1972, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new generation of flagship luxury-class vehicles, newly-named the S-Class. Today, touching on 50 years later, the vehicle is still a work of art. In fact, it’s more than that, because there’s not much art you can drive down an autobahn. If you went back in time and combined the best artistic minds with the best engineering minds, you’d have come up with a vehicle something like this generation of S-Class. It’s a product of its time, sure, but it’s still a head-turning, eye-gluing, masterpiece. In fact, sometimes it’s hard to look away - the stance of this model is so balanced. It’s a luxury vehicle, but it’s a weightlifter in a fine suit. It’s a velvet sledgehammer.

This model, a 1976 450 SE sedan with a 4.5l V8, is owned by Mooroopna’s John Papoulis. John, who owns and runs Shepparton’s Bohjass Wine Bar Restaurant & Bar with his partner, Rosie, is a life-long car – and V8 – enthusiast. He’s owned more than 40 cars in his lifetime, but the 450 SE is a new addition and a new favourite. John has lowered the front end a touch, but apart from that, the car is essentially as it would have been 20, 30, and even 40 years ago. “It’s all factory-made. This is how it was,” John said. It’s a big, heavy car at 1,740kg, but as John said, it’s got more than enough power to pull its weight. Inside, it’s like stepping back in time to the Business Class section of a 747. Mercedes-Benz’s attachment to luxury is all

there. The driver’s seat feels like a couch and there’s an electric sunroof and cruise control. The engine itself is a beast. A jungle of cables and tubes wrapped around a solid heart that produces an effortless roar. Designed to sit comfortably on freeways, the 450 SE has a top speed of 210km/hr. If pushed, it can get itself from stationary to 100km/hr in less than 9 seconds. “I like the noise and the power of it, the looks and the stance of this Mercedes,” John said. Don’t we all? If you, or anyone you know, is passionate about their car, motorbike, bicycle, or wheelbarrow (basically anything with wheels), please get in contact with The Adviser at editor@sheppartonadviser.com.au. Happy driving!

Little Master to cause a big stir By Struan Jones FORMER AFL superstar Gary Ablett junior will be in town next week for two events hosted by the Shepparton Swans Football and Netball club. The ‘Little Master’ was booked in as the main speaker at a three-course dinner event at Shepparton’s The Woolshed on Saturday, February 20. After the dinner sold out in the blink of an eye, Gary agreed to sit down for a Sunday lunch, too. Widely considered one of the most impressive players the game has ever seen, Ablett played 357 AFL games and kicked 445 goals. To list his career highlights would take a few more paragraphs. Gary was twice a premiership player, and twice a Brownlow medalist. As a Geelong player, he won that team’s best and fairest award twice. While a Gold Coast Sun, he won the best and

fairest four times. President of the Shepparton Swans Football and Netball Club, Jarrod Sutherland, said the response to the event had been overwhelming. Normally used to drumming up numbers to

come along to club social events, Jarrod said it was “great to be running an event not relying on the same people showing up.” “Gary Ablett is well respected by his attitude and how he goes about things, and The

Woolshed is a great venue,” he said. “It’ll be a great event and we can’t wait to host him.” For more information check out the Shepparton Swans Facebook page.

Top four tightens By Struan Jones MOOROOPNA has leapt to the top of the Cricket Shepparton A-Grade ladder with a seven-wicket win over Karramomous on Saturday on the back of an unbeaten 70 by wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Lowe. Mooroopna now leads a pack of four teams separated by only two points at the top of the Haisman Shield competition with only four rounds to play before the finals. Playing in Mooroopna, Karramomous

batted first and battled their way to 8/160 at the close of their 45 overs. Bayden Bailey was most impressive with the bat, knocking 61* off just 73 balls to bolster the visitors’ total. In reply, a quick-fire 103-run partnership between Jac Smith-Williams and Brad Lowe gave Mooroopna the ascendency. Mooroopna hosts the hapless last-placed Tatura this Saturday, which should be a short affair. All Haisman Shield A Grade results in brief:

Harmony Cup gets bigger and better By Struan Jones THE 2021 GV Harmony Cup, hosted by Shepparton United and Youth Cricket Club, is for people in the Goulburn Valley with any type of disability, of any age or gender and will be held at Princess Park, Shepparton on Wednesday, February 23 starting at 9.30am. What started out six years ago as a friendly match between two teams from Shepparton disability services and support organisation, Connect GV, has grown to a region-wide carnival of cricket. Tony Giblin, vice-president of the Shepparton United and Youth Cricket Club, hosts of the day, said at last count there were seven teams of

10 descending on Princess Park for the day, and hopefully more could be enticed to have a hit. The round-robin format of matches features 10-overs per side games with modified rules. There will be guest appearances from international cricketers Sarah Elliott and Ray Bright. A barbeque will be put on by the Shepparton South Rotary Club and the Melbourne Renegades T20 franchise cricket team promotional van will also be in town. To participate in the event as a team or individual please contact Tony Giblin from Shepparton United and Youth Cricket Club on 0407 246 778.
