The dams are rising RAINFALL over the last month is giving a lot of people reason to be happy despite everything going on around them with the pandemic. The amount of rain we have had is causing some of our rivers to swell to flood levels in part and is having great impact on the levels of our dams. Eildon is still only at 62 .9% of capacity but is the highest it has been this time of the year for the last few years. Other storages in the system including Waranga Basin and Goulburn Weir are running between 75 percent and 86 percent capacity. Continued Page 10
AN AUSTRALIAN SUCCESS STORY IN OUR HOUR OF NEED... Med-Con machine operator, Sandra Nitschke, at one of the mask making machines, at Lemnos Shepparton East. Photo: Steve Hutcheson
Australian business treated as disposable as their products By Sarah Knight WHEN the pandemic hit in early 2020, Goulburn Valley-based manufacturer, Med-Con was the only producer of surgical masks in the entire country. The business quickly responded to the federal government’s urgent plea to produce 60 million masks by November 2020. For Med-Con this meant hiring and training more than 100
new staff, purchasing 10 new machines, and enlisting the help of the Australian Defence Force; all of which the business achieved – successfully fulfilling the request, within weeks of the target date. Operating 24/7, the business was producing three million masks a week says CEO, Steve Csiszar - that’s 50 percent more than the annual production figure of two million, every week. Continued Page 10

NEWS HOUSE OF DISCARDS AT SAM... Work by Aboriginal artist, Tony Albert has been installed in the SAM forecourt. Photo: Stephanie Holiday
Shepparton Art Museum’s largest work on display THE public opening of the Shepparton Art Museum is drawing closer with the major artwork, ‘A House of Discards (2019)’, by acclaimed Aboriginal artist Tony Albert (Girramay/ Kuku Yalanji), being permanently installed in the forecourt of the new building. The towering steel structure, reaching almost five metres in height, resembles a supersized house of playing cards with bold black and white faces. It is the largest work to enter the SAM Collection to date. House of Discards expands on Albert’s ongoing use of “Aboriginalia” style playing cards, a term the artist coined to describe kitschy objects that feature crude caricatures of Aboriginal people and appropriated designs in the style of Indigenous art. With its reference to both the British m o n a r c hy a n d d e p i c t i o n s o f t h e Aboriginality, Albert uses the playing cards to reflect on the legacy of colonisation and cultural misrepresentation in this country. House of Discards departs from the artist’s established representational style, with the Aboriginal imagery discarded and the suit erased from the faces of the playing cards. Reduced to black and white plains placed back-to-back, the work puts into stark contrast Indigenous and non-Indigenous

perspectives on a national history founded in the dispossession of First Nations Peoples, while also alluding to the conjoined nature of our future. The structure (and the history it speaks of) appears precarious, yet its inflated rendering in steel also suggests the possibility of a constructing something sturdier if all elements can work together. “We are so fortunate to be able to present this significant public artwork by one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed contemporary artists, Tony Albert, at the entrance of our new museum,” SAM’s Curator – Indigenous, Belinda Briggs, said. “Technically and conceptually astute, the work’s commentary on and probing of societal and cultural structures creates a foundation for both intimate and public discussion about the design of a shared future between Indigenous and nonIndigenous Australians.” Tony Albert’s work can be seen in major national and international museums and private collections, he examines the legacy of racial and cultural misrepresentation, particularly of Australia’s Aboriginal people, and seeks to rewrite historical mistruths and injustice.

Fatal fire threat prompts smoke alarm warning A NEW report has revealed an increase in Victorians who died in house fires in 2020. It has prompted an urgent smoke alarm warning by Victoria’s fire services.
Country Fire Authority and Fire Rescue Victoria data reveals 22 people died in preventable Victorian house fires in 2020, an increase from 16 the year before, and above the long-term annual average of 18. The majority of the fires started at night, between 9pm and 6am, with 72 per cent starting in living areas and bedrooms. Half of the 18 properties where the fires broke out did not have working smoke alarms. Firefighters say these tragic deaths reinforce C FA and F RV firefighters’ recommendation to install interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms, living areas and hallways. Interconnected smoke alarms would ensure that when any alarm activated, all smoke alarms in your home would sound. Ac t i ng Fi re Res c ue C om m issioner Ken Brown said these heartbreaking and preventable deaths demonstrated why it was so important for Victorians to have working smoke alarms in their homes. “Working smoke alarms offer you the best chance of sur viving a fire, and without one your risk of dying in a house fire dramatically increases,” Acting Commissioner Brown said. “We know most fatal fires start at night, and the smell of smoke will not wake you up, so it is crucial you have smoke alarms in all bedrooms, living areas and hallways. For the best protection, smoke alarms should be interconnected so that all alarms sound in the event of a fire.” In the past decade, Victorian firefighters have responded to more than 32 ,000

residential fires. Statistics show that in the past 10 years, the kitchen was the most common room of fire ignition for nonfatal incidents, however fires that caused serious injury or death most commonly started in lounge and bedroom areas. Victorians can purchase interconnected

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, for the next few months until October we can expect above average rainfall across most of the state with most stream flows higher than usual for the same period. Temperatures across the country are likely to be warmer as well giving farmers a good feeling for this year's production figures. Australian business treated as disposable as their products continued from front page FEDERAL Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum recently stated, “Med-Con created a real sense of national security and comfort was given to Australians by the fact that we had this capacity for self-reliance to provide for our own people in a crisis.” But Australian health services have been quick to return to purchasing from their previous off-shore suppliers, since international trade restrictions have eased, in recent months. This resulting in nothing short of a disaster

for our local Med-Con hero's, their rapid expansion, now virtually redundant, as the majority of their machines sit unused on their factory floor, and a skeleton crew remain after laying off the majority of their newly employed personnel. The devastation was evident in Mr Csiszar’s recent comment to the ABC, “All the people we've supported throughout the pandemic seem to have left us. "They seem to have lost the concept that if we have another pandemic and (international) borders shut again, they're going to be reliant
on local manufacturers," Mr Csiszar said. "I just don't think there's that resolve to stick with Australian-made," he commented further. "Unless governments make a stand and tell their health services, they have to buy from us, they'll just search around for the cheapest product." Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum reinforced the point saying, “It is imperative that we maintain support for manufacturers such as Med-Con, this includes through procurement contracts, whether that be at a federal, state or local level."

Digital lifestyle trends impact on energy demands OUR impact on household electricity demand is increasing, thanks to powering our many devices, heating and cooling our spaces and the sharp increase in people working and studying from home. T he ‘ Fut u re H om e L i f e ’ re p or t , published by Monash University, reveals the emerging technology trends shaping the way we live now and how these trends have implications on the future energy needs of Australian households. The report presents 45 trends and 10 principles to inform energy planning and forecasting for future home life. This report forms part of the landmark Digital Energy Futures project. The team of researchers have uncovered changing digital lifestyles and emerging home trends of everyday Australians, and how these activities are likely to affect energy planning for future residential living. Co-author of the report, Associate Professor Yolande Strengers, explains how Australians are expanding the range of activities in their homes and subsequently spending more time in them. “ W h at ’s more , p e ople a nt ic ipate that the home will become even more important to them as they age, with healthcare and aged care increasingly
home-based. That all has consequences for energy demand,” Associate Professor Strengers said. The team investigated seven areas of home life, where the majority of energy demand and peak electricity demand takes place at present or is anticipated to increase in the future. These include charging and mobilit y, cooking and eating, heating and cooling and working and studying from home. As emerging technologies, platforms and services become part of people’s digital lifestyles, their activities across all these areas are changing, along with their relationship to energy. Entertainment, recreation and leisure pursuits are anticipated to become more important to home life. They are also using more devices simultaneously in different parts of the home, which may increase energy demand for heating and cooling. As well as identifying 45 emerging trends, The Future Home Life report recommends 10 key principles for future home life to help guide and inform energy forecasting, energy policy and demand management programs.

IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN... Kenworth K-125 CR was the first model constructed in Australia. Photo: Steve Hutcheson
King of the road THE first Kenworth trucks in Australia were fully imported from the US. It wasn’t until 1970 that Kenworth started assembly of the vehicles at the new plant in Bayswater, Victoria. One of the features of Kenworth was that each truck was custom built according to the buyer’s specification. Cab style, chassis length, powerplant, transmission, fuel tanks, gauges and paint finishes were all personalised design features. The K-125CR was the first model built in Australia in 1971. This particular K125 CR was built in 1978 when it was purchased by Phillips Transport in Shepparton through Brian Thompson Motors. Fitted with a Cummins NTC 350 engine and 9 speed Eaton transmission and drive train, it spent six years doing linehaul work between Shepparton to Brisbane and then 15 years Shepparton to Melbourne before slowing down for local transport around Shepparton. It was donated to the Kenworth Hall of Fame in Alice Springs before being brought back to the Museum of Vehicle Evolution here in Kialla where it will stand in the truck pavilion when the rebuilt MOVE opens in August.

Benalla got its season back on track at Mansfield a fortnight ago. The Swans come to the Benalla showgrounds off the back of a good win against Shepparton United. Tip: Benalla.

Seymour will look to do the double over Echuca today. I suspect this could turn into a real arm wrestle therefore early scoreboard pressure could be pivotal and if the Murray Bombers can apply it, then they could set themselves up to extract revenge for their opening day defeat at Victoria Park on Easter Saturday. Tip: Echuca.
When the teams last played the Cats clawed their way back from a slow start to record a fantastic win. Cats coach John Lamont knows this is a danger game for his boys and he knows that only a four-quarter effort will be good enough to overcome the Bulldogs at Tatura Park. I think, the Cats are playing well enough despite having not played for a few weeks. That should be good enough to get the win and remain in the top six. Tip: Mooroopna.
SHEPPARTON V EUROA Shepparton will look to put its recent good form to the test again when it welcomes the red-hot Euroa. The young Bears have been playing some good football of late without getting the reward of wins. The Magpies have been outstanding since the resumption from the lockdown 4.0. Tip: Euroa.
KYABRAM V UNITED Kyabram will be looking to consolidate its place in the top six and keep its premiership aspirations well and truly on track. If the Demons can put some early scoreboard pressure on the allconquering Bombers, they just may dare to dream. Tip: Kyabram.
MANSFIELD V SEYMOUR This will be interesting match-up. The Eagles, by virtual of a second lockdown in season, will need to make every post a winner. A win here will go a long way to helping the Lions secure a top three finish. And, I think they will have all the aces to sneak past the plucky Eagles. Tip: Seymour.

BENALLA V SWANS
This is a genuine 50-50 contest. The Tigers sit inside the top six on 18 points and the Eagles are one of three teams locked on 16 points. I am thinking that if the Tigers can overcome the challenge of the Eagles early on and apply some scoreboard pressure, I think they can win. Tip: Rochester

Football Tips
Seymour faces a huge challenge in its bid to continue its winning form and consolidate its place inside the top six. Coach Stephanie Vick knows the importance of this game in the Murray Bombers’ aspirations to remain at the top of the ladder. If they can continue their consistent four quarter performances, then they should get the win in a tight affair. Tip: Echuca.
TATURA V MOOROOPNA Tatura faces a huge challenge as it desperately tries to protect its hold on sixth place on the ladder. The task doesn’t get any harder today against the visiting Mooroopna. The Cats have only lost once in 2021. Young gun Elise Boyer, Steph Gorrie and Laura Kilpatrick will be the key players that will be trying to lead the home team to the win, which will be a tough challenge, especially that the visitors come to Tatura Park in strong form. Tip: Mooroopna.
MANSFIELD V ROCHESTER This will be an evenly matched contest between two teams desperate to chalk up another win in what has been a tough 2021. The Tigers have won twice and the Eagles once only. Tip: Rochester.
SHEPPARTON V EUROA This is a huge game for the improving Euroa as it looks to keep its finals aspirations alive. After a slow start to the season, the Magpies
currently sit on 14 points in ninth place, but only four points adrift of sixth placed Tatura. A win for the Bears will potentially put them back inside the top six if results fall their way and it will make it very difficult for the Pies to qualify for the finals. Tip: Shepparton.
BENALLA V SWANS Benalla faces a huge challenge in its bid to keep its flickering finals aspirations alive. It is really tight for that last spot, with Tatura, Shepparton, Benalla and Euroa all laying claims to it. They face a team which will definitely be playing finals in 2021. If they can fire, then the Saints could dare to dream. Tip: Swans.
KYABRAM V UNITED Shepparton United will be eager to hit the court today to keep its winning form going in the threeway battle for the minor premiership. The home team will look to Hollie Reid, Michaela Herbert and Carly Whitfield to inspire the team against the very good and well-balanced visitors. Tip: United.
MANSFIELD V SEYMOUR This will be a really tough ask for Mansfield. When the teams clashed prior to lockdown, Seymour was far too strong. The Lions are building towards September and I expect that they will be far too good for Eagles. Tip: Seymour.
