PUTTING TOOLAMBA ON THE MAP... Long time resident of Toolamba, Judy Luscombe tends to her latest gardening foray, a set of flower boxes that spell out the name of the town. Photo: Steve Hutcheson
SHEPPARTON - 46-52 Benalla Road
Call now to get one step closer to your dream home.
By Steve Hutcheson WE need a few bright spots along the day to change the sense of dread the country is currently facing with the pandemic. Driving along the Toolamba Road, one of these small bright spots takes place at
the corner of Toolamba-Rushworth Road that brings a smile to those passing. A small garden with bright red cottage and occasional figures playing cricket is set against the open rural backdrop. A recently new feature to appear is a set
of planter boxes that spell out the word TOOLAMBA. The property was once part of a larger dairy farm owned by Ray and Judy Luscombe until they retired several years ago. Continued Page 10

Damian Drum MP Speaks on Afghanistan I encourage those struggling at this time to speak with friends and family, while help is also available to veterans and their families at Open Arms on 1800 011 046
THE scenes coming out of Afghanistan as the Taliban take control of the country are truly horrifying. “One only has to see the sheer chaos and despair at Kabul Airport over the past 24 hours to realise the dire situation faced by Afghans.” “My electorate of Nicholls is home to many Afghans who have relatives that remain in Afghanistan – my office has, and will continue to, assist those families wherever possible.” Foreign Minister, Marise Payne has expressed that no Afghan visa holder currently in Australia will be asked to return to Afghanistan while the security situation remains dire.
“Over the last 20 years, some 39,000 Australian Defence Force personnel, including many from Nicholls, have served in Afghanistan and the current events will be distressing for many of them. “I encourage those struggling at this time to speak with friends and family, while help is also available to veterans and their families at Open Arms on 1800 011 046.” Over 250 defence personnel have been deployed to urgently evacuate Australian citizens and visa holders in danger. “Defence is taking all necessary precautions to protect its people and those authorised for evacuation.”

Music scholarships a legacy for Myra Slee LONG-TIME Shepparton community leader, Murray Slee, has gifted Greater S h e pp a r ton S e c ond a r y C ol l e g e $10,000 to establish a series of music scholarships in the name of his late wife. Two G SSC students will each benefit from a $500 Myra Jean Slee Music Scholarship, with the awards to be presented annually for the next 10 years. Mr Slee said the former Shepparton High School, where the new GSSC will open for the 2022 school year, was a special place for both himself and Myra. He attended for part of his schooling while Myra, who spent her entire life in Shepparton, was also a Shepparton High School student who gained a lifelong love of music and dance at the school. The two wed in 1949 and were a key part of their community throughout their 71-year marriage. For almost half that time, 34 years, Mr Slee served as a councillor, including three terms as mayor. His wife passed away in September last year. “Myra was a wonderful mayoress
Myra was a wonderful mayoress who always thought the best of people Murray Slee
who always thought the best of people,” Mr Slee said. At 98, Mr Slee remains active and keenly interested in his community. He said it was pleasing to see so much investment and development taking place in Greater Shepparton and expressed a desire to tour the new GSSC on its completion later this year. GSSC director of Music, Lachlan Gallacher, said the scholarships would come in very handy for the future recipients. “Music students have course fees, attend workshops and concerts and can also face other costs as they continue their studies,” he said. “These include buying musical instruments and perhaps undertaking private tuition to hone their talents.” The scholarships will commence in 2022 and continue for the next decade. A commemorative plaque bearing Myra Jean Slee’s name, with the names of student recipients to be progressively added, will be displayed in the vicinity of the new school’s state-of-the-art dance, music and performance spaces.

GREATER SHEPPARTON SECONDARY COLLEGE
As Captains of Greater Shepparton Secondary College, we share in the disappointment in having to return to remote learning this week. As Year 12 students, in our final year of school, we can especially appreciate how difficult this year has been – and 2020 was pretty tough too! But we’re also really proud of our fellow students and how we’ve supported each other during lockdowns. We appreciate the amazing work of our teachers, who always have our backs, and know we will get through this challenging time together. So do your best with remote learning, keep in regular contact with your mates and take good care of yourselves. We hope to see you back at school soon!

COMPUTER SCAMS ON THE RISE... With more of us spending time at home on our computers, scammers are looking for ways to target people. Photo: Supplied
WE’RE only in August yet scammers have stolen more than $7.2M from Australians by gaining access to home computers, an increase of 184 per cent compared to the same period last year. According to the ACCC’s Scamwatch, almost 6,500 Australians have reported phone calls from scammers trying to convince them to download software that gives access to home computers and their bank accounts. Commonly called remote access scams, scammers pretend to be from well-known organisations and they create a sense of urgency to make you give them access to your computer via remote access software. “These types of scams target and impact all people and can be convincing. People aged 55 and older lost over $4.4M, accounting for almost half of total losses,” ACCC Deputy Chair, Delia Rickard, said. “Young people reported losing on average $20,000 and eight Indigenous Australians lost a total of $38,000.” Scams of this nature will often be an
unexpected phone call saying you’ve been billed for a purchase you didn’t make, your device has been compromised, or your account has been hacked. Sometimes they start with an SMS, email or pop up on a screen from a scammer seeking urgent contact to fix a problem. They will tell you to download remote control software such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer. Once the scammer has control of your computer or device, they will ask you to log into applications such as emails, internet banking or PayPal accounts, which will allow the scammer to access your banking and personal information to impersonate you or steal their money. People who think they may have been scammed should contact their bank or financial institution as soon as possible. If they installed any apps or programs, they should also delete them from the device. Support in recovering from these scams including how to check if your identity and computer is secure is available through IDCARE on 1800 595 160 or www. idcare.org.
Vibert Reserve Pavilion Reaches Stage 3 of Redevelopment GREATER Shepparton City Council have awarded the contract for Stage 3 of the Vibert Reserve Pavilion redevelopment to Shepparton-based company, Crow Constructions Pty Ltd. The major expansion works, totalling more than $3.7M, will make further improvements to the pavilion that will accommodate the Shepparton South Community Centre’s move from Service Street, as well as a number of sporting clubs who use the pavilion.
Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said the relocation of the South Shepparton Community House to Vibert Reserve would ensure the community had regular access to a purpose-built space for skill development, social activities and support. This development is partly funded by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Works should commence in September and take around 11 months to complete.

Tyler Collins-Ash nominated for Young Professional Award TIMES are tough across the state and many businesses are struggling against the tide of restrictions and closures. Tyler Collins-Ash who works at the GV Hotel is one young man among many who are making the best of a bad deal and has been nominated for the Young Professionals Award in the 2021 White King -Pental Triple M Business Awards. Nominations are being sought to showcase and honour the outstanding contributions the many businesses operating through these tough times have provided over the past year. Hosted by the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the 2021 White King-Pental Triple M Business Awards is seeing more new entrants being nominated for this year’s awards. 12 categories of the Business Awards are available and open for nomination.

Am I bigger than this? By Steve Hutcheson THIS weekend marks the sixth anniversary on my son taking his own life. I am yet to come to terms with the fact or even to understand what was so bleak about his life that he felt that was the only recourse left. As he left us to understand, it was the person he was in a relationship with that figured predominantly in his depression. A year later, a colleague did much the same because his health condition meant he could no longer be the super soldier, a commando in the Australian army, that he was. I know I have been depressed in the past. Thirty years ago, I lost everything in the financial meltdown that happened at that time, perhaps ten million dollars according to the change in property values now and then, (I was a developer). I lost my fancy cars, my business and anything and everything I held of value. My marriage fell apart so I was left with a small bag of black clothes and a need to reconsider what was really important in life. There is a life outside of where you are now. Lifeline Australia has reported over 3,400 calls to their centre in one day last week. Lifeline Australia chair, John Brogden, said "The good news is that people who need support are reaching out and they're getting it.
More idiots dumping rubbish
If we look at what is going on in the world, at best, our problems are first world problems, in relationships, money, loss of prestige, a bully who is in fact weaker than you are. None of these are really significant, we just believe they are. There is always, and I mean always, an alternative. I am a three-year Afghan veteran, not military but humanitarian. I have colleagues who are still there, solving problems bigger than their own. I found a life in making changes to the lives who were less capable than I was, so can you. Consider the lives of people in our community and the difficulties they are currently facing and ask yourself, are my problems bigger than theirs? There are people in our community who need help that you can best provide. You know intimately your hardships and can relate to theirs. There are old people, disabled people, young people, foreigners in a foreign land, people going through financial hardship, people who are lonely, all sorts of people that need help. Go out and find that person, find yourself by doing so. If you can't there are people who will help you see through the fog. NO RESPECT FOR OUR PLANET... People are still dumping rubbish around Arcadia Downs, this time letters with names and addresses are among the junk strewn around. Photo: Supplied
T H E dumping of rubbish has sadly continued around Arcadia Downs, however in this latest rubbish dumping incident, the dumpers may not be the sharpest tools in the shed because amongst the rubbish are letters with their name and their Shepparton home address on them. This latest dumping involves all sorts of rubbish on the side of Raftery's track which is off Raftery Road. There is also rubbish being dumped at the end of River Road W which is just past the entrance to Arcadia Downs Drive. Takeaway food boxes, letters
with names and addresses clearly legible and alcohol cans are just some of the many items strewn around. This information has been handed to the police so if you or anyone you know are responsible for this mess, best it gets cleaned up quickly before the police come knocking on your door! If you see or know of people dumping rubbish anywhere in our community, report them to the authorities. The public space belongs to all of us, not just the careless individuals using the beautiful land as a trash can.

Ray was born on the farm shortly after his father Keith took it up in 1937. Ray and Judy now live in Shepparton and are actively working for an opportunity shop in town. Judy is regularly on the site tending the plants she has raised from cuttings and now tending the planter boxes constructed by her son, Rod, who lives on the adjoining property. “I wanted to make a sign to show people they were in Toolamba and a plant based one seemed the best way to do that,” said Judy. Builders feeling the squeeze A KNOCK-ON effect from the building boom is a squeeze on builders, particularly smaller ones, to ensure they have enough materials to complete builds they are committed to within the usual timeframes. The number of new homes commencing construction in 2021 is more than 20 percent higher than the previous record in 2018. This is driven by HomeBuilder grants, record low interest rates and the influx of people moving to regional areas. Hotondo Homes Shepparton office manager and sales representative, Jody Mintern, has emphasised how much of an influx there has been for new builds and how they are doing their best to get on site to start and complete each new construction as soon as possible given building materials such as timber are in short supply. “Every builder is facing material shortages and we are doing our best to make sure our customers have their builds completed in time,” said Jody. “The timber industry was already recovering from the bushfires and trying to catch up after that, and now the building boom has added to the immeasurable pressure.” Domestic production of structural timber
has always required supplementation from imported timber to meet the demand for timber in Australia. Around 20 percent of timber used for the construction of new homes was imported in the last five years. While Australian production of timber has risen 17 percent, importation of timber will continue to be necessary to meet demand. Timber and shipping prices have also inflated due to the surging international demand for housing and renovations, combined with growing delays in delivery of key materials and products. A HIA Trades Report stated that this is the steepest trade deficit nationally since 2004, especially critical outside of Sydney and Melbourne. By trade, the steepest shortages are in bricklaying, ceramic tiling, roofing and carpentry. Prices are subsequently rising, especially in site preparation and roofing. HIA expects these constraints to be addressed by both a supply and demand response towards the end of the year and into 2022. International supply chains should be better equipped to cope with demand and the housing build frenzy will start to slow.

Tatura RV Rest Stop
GREATER Shepparton City Council will continue to offer the free Recreational Vehicle (RV) Rest Stop in Tatura at the Douglas Street car park following a successful trial. The decision was adopted at Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting following the successful 12-month trial which saw Council allocate space for three fully self-contained RV’s to stay in Tatura for up to 48 hours. Data collected via CCTV surveillance showed the site was utilised a total of 70 nights during the trial, with surveys revealing the average spend in the town per stay was close to $200 per vehicle. Following analysis, the trial was evaluated as successful and Council approved to continue the Douglas
Street RV Rest Stop, with a review to occur in three years’ time. “It will be really good for our town, tourism is so important to our region, giving travellers more reason to stop in our lovely town is always welcome,” said Tatura Hot Bread owner, Sophia Wells. Coinciding with the trial, the Douglas street car park was resurfaced, street lighting was upgraded and CCTV monitoring was installed. To enable this rest stop to continue to be utilised by RV’s, Council will specify the area as a designated camping area and erect official signage at the site to regulate its use.
While infrastructure in Tatura includes three caravan parks with powered and non-powered sites available, there are limitations to the number of sites that can accommodate large fifth wheelers and RV’s such as buses. Further consideration for free RV Rest Stops in other towns will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Council will develop an RV strategy, in consultation with key stakeholders, as part of the next Economic Development Tourism and Major Events Strategy to accommodate future requests. For more information about the Tatura Recreational Vehicle Rest Stop, contact the Tourism and Major Events team on 5832 9700.

Manage your finances by the numbers THIS last financial year saw a number of changes in the tax regulations that might escape a lot of people. According to the principal at Tax Guru Chartered Accountants, Navneet Jyoti, “This last year saw a lot of people taking on Jobkeeper and Jobseeker as a means of getting through the year, however, they need to be aware that this may have tax implications in submitting their returns,” said Navneet. “There have been other changes to the tax code as well that might see people, hundreds if not thousands of dollars better off. “The 2020 tax threshold has changed also with $37,000 to $45,000 at 20 percent and it is over $45,000 that the 34 percent range will be applied.” Because the pandemic saw a shift in some businesses profitability, the government have re-introduced loss carryback that will enable some to look at recovering tax paid up to three years ago. To ensure you get the best out of your tax position, the team at Tax Guru Chartered Accountants are located at Suite 3/164 Welsford Street, Shepparton and can be reached on 5822 1900 or their website at www.taxguru.net.au.

PRINT SOLD NATIONALLY... Holly McLennan-Brown’s ‘New Beginnings’ is available to the public as a print In Kmart stores across Australia. Photo: Stephanie Holliday
HOLLY McLennan-Brown is a young, successful artist who has roots in our region, with her father originally from Kyabram and other members of her family living locally. Her art has taken Australia by storm with one of her beautiful artworks now being sold nationally in retail chain Kmart as a print. The beautiful piece is called 'New Beginnings' and Holly says she found inspiration in the 1939 Cummeragunja Walk Off, whereby up to 200 Yorta Yorta people walked off the Cummeragunja Aboriginal Mission and crossed the Murray River into Northern Victoria to establish a strike camp. Seeking a better way of life, this was the first mass strike of Aboriginal people in Australia protesting poor living conditions and management of the Mission.
The piece details journey lines through the middle which symbolise moving forward together and gathering to share stories of family, animals and identity. The stars are a positive affirmation that every new day is fresh and full of opportunities. "For my own pieces I generally get my inspiration from emotional and spiritual connections I'm experiencing, along with whatever I feel inspired by at the time. I use my artwork as a tool to navigate my thoughts and feelings so most of my pieces express my progression through that," said Holly. "I hope this contemporary representation of New Beginnings invokes your personal connections, reflecting the beauty of our past, present and future."

DELIVERING TO THE WORLD... New owners of PACK & SEND Shepparton service center, Sue and Gavin Ford. Photo: Steve Hutcheson
DEMAND for courier services has boomed through the pandemic. Local couple, Gavin and Sue Ford, who recently acquired the PACK & SEND Shepparton service centre, have had a taste of just how busy business can be with consistent work since starting two-weeks ago. Benefitting from a well-established network of over 100 PACK & SEND service centres across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, no package is too large, too valuable or too complicated for their capable teams. Gavin who worked at SPC as a fitter and turner, and Sue who comes from a retail background, are eager to continue the world-class, local approach first established by the original franchisees, Rick and Susan Orr. Sue said that, “We hope this business might become a family business one day.” It’s hard to imagine the industry slowing down, particularly when PACK & SEND are one of the country's best courier and freight providers. For all your personal, business or eCommerce needs, get in touch with Gavin and Sue Ford on 03 5821 0568 or you can find them at 155-157 High Street, Shepparton.
Lovell seeks State Government action to avoid another harvest labour shortage THE Liberal Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, has called on the State Government to act now to ensure sufficient workers are available for the upcoming harvest season. Speaking during the adjournment debate on the sole sitting day of State Parliament this week, Ms Lovell sought a commitment from Minister for Agriculture, Mary Ann Thomas,
to act quickly so that overseas workers can arrive and quarantine here in Victoria to avoid a repeat of the massive labour shortage experienced last season that severely impacted farmers throughout the industry. In her contribution, Ms Lovell slammed the inaction of the State Government prior to the 2020/21 harvest season and the decision to force incoming workers to quarantine in
Tasmania under the Pacific Islander Labour Scheme. Ms Lovell said the Government signed up late to the scheme and workers arrived too late for season, resulting in the loss of millions of dollars throughout the industry as precious produce rotted on trees unpicked. “The Shepparton and Cobram areas alone require about 7000 workers to harvest the

Mural unveiled A COLOU R F U L mural completed by students from Invergordon Alternate Campus was officially unveiled last week at the DECA Pit Stop site. Koorie students, Aisha Hopkins, Sienna Ratila and Jar-Keyshia Atkinson completed the work under the guidance of Lighthouse Koorie Art and Culture Facilitator, Lisa Lynch. The students put their heart and soul into all aspects of completing the wall mural from the planning, creative design phase and execution of the finished masterpiece. Their teacher, Katherine Neall, who transported the students from Invergordon campus weekly to Pit Stop, also got involved. The work depicts the beautiful red earth and landscape of the Australian outback, also incorporating a vintage car paying tribute to the mechanics-based mentoring
program run by the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project. The vast wall mural has a central emphasis on the two students' self-portraits (Aisha and Sienna), highlighting the importance of connection within our community as key to achieving better outcomes for our young people. “Our way of working at Lighthouse is to nurture and encourage positive change using a ‘whatever it takes’ approach,” said Lighthouse Coordinator Secondary Education and Innovation, Amy Robinson. “Better outcomes for young people come about in different ways, whether it be through art or helping young people develop skills that reflect their interests as we do with the Pit Stop program.” Family/carers and younger siblings attended morning tea celebration where the

students received a gift and a certificate of recognition for their leadership and creativity shown in completing the mural. Pit Stop staff and coordinators as well as DECA and Wodonga Tafe, who own the
site, are thrilled with the outcome as the space, that over 60 students and teachers pass through each week, has now transformed into a beautiful and calming place that truly reflects our community.
Bushfire danger set to soar this century THE number of high-risk bushfire days could triple in some parts of Victoria by the end of the century, according to new climate research by Country Fire Australia (CFA) and international research bodies. Research, published this month in the International Journal of Wildland Fire, found that under different emissions scenarios both mean and extreme fire danger are expected to increase in Victoria. State-wide, research modelling indicates a 10 –20 percent increase in extreme Forest Fire Danger Index, with
the greatest change projected in the north-west region, and a doubling or tripling of ‘Very High’ days in central and eastern parts of the state. Beyond rising temperatures, human-induced climate changes affect rainfall and humidity, indicating to researchers that the fire season will continue to start earlier and to run for longer. Most alarmingly, as a flowon effect, opportunities for prescribed springtime burning may be reduced. CFA chief officer, Jason Heffernan, is proud of the

Sammy’s taekwondo students in action TA E K WO N D O , o n e o f t h e m o s t systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts, teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is considered a discipline that shows ways of enhancing the spirit and life of its practitioners through training the body and mind. Today, it has become a global sport that has gained an international
reputation, and stands among the official games in the Olympics. Shepparton’s Koryo Taekwondo Centre, owned by instructor Sammy Rachele, is a testament to the discipline and hard work it takes to be successful in the sport, with students at the centre achieving great things and passing their gradings.
