Plea for heart health SHEPPARTON tops the state as the top region for heart attack hospitalisations against state average. A whopping 28 percent of residents have ended up in the emergency room compared to the Victorian average rate of 13.6 per 10,000 people. Locals are also five percent less active than people are in other places. The Heart Foundation is calling for $1.2M to tackle Victoria’s overall poor exercise scorecard in Melbourne’s outer growth areas and regional heart hotspots. The heart health charity has urged the Victorian State Government for its support to expand the Heart Foundation’s ‘Walking Program’ in priority areas to help save more lives and avoid hospital admissions. Heart Foundation Heart Maps data reveal alarming inequities exist, with higher rates of physical inactivity, coronary heart disease deaths and hospitalisations found in lower socio-economic areas across the state. More than 4800 Victorians die and 36,000 are hospitalised each year from coronary heart disease. The healthcare benefits are enormous, studies have found that for every dollar invested in walking, it returns $13. “At least 30 minutes of brisk walking most days is enough to help people reduce their risks of heart disease by 30 to 40 per cent,” said Heart Foundation’s CEO in Victoria, Kellie-Ann Jolly.

Maude Street Mall redevelopment works underway THE Maude Street Mall redevelopment is finally underway. The redevelopment will be completed in four stages, with expected completion of the entire project by late 2022. Contractors are currently undertaking early works demolition and utility connections. Stage 1 located on the west side of the mall at the Fraser Street entrance is currently under construction. The majority of works will be completed by the end of 2021 with playground equipment to be installed early next year. Greater Shepparton City Council has sought to reduce disruption to shoppers and traders during the works as far as practicable, particularly in the lead up to Christmas. Access to stores in the Maude Street Mall will be maintained throughout the construction period and parking in the surrounding areas will not be affected. The new mall design includes the addition of low speed, one-way traffic with on-street parking and is estimated to cost $17.15M. The Maude Street Mall redevelopment is jointly funded by the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, the State Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund and Council contributions. For more information about the works contact Manager Projects on 5832 9700 or go to Greater Shepparton City Council website.

Support for people recovering from stroke SHEPPARTON has the unenviable record of being in the top 5 regions with poor heart health conditions in Victoria and has the highest incident rate of hospitalisation required for it per population than any other region. Getting support in the recovery stage has been limited and a new stroke support service has recently commenced operation at the Community Health Centre, GV Health.
Gillian McLeod, the centre coordinator has opened with a COVID friendly activity schedule to support people in poststroke, to readjust to getting back into the community. This month, aside from group walks, there are plans to introduce more activities including canoeing, hydro pool classes (assisted by an exercise physiologist) and a human bookclub. “I would like to reach out to people recovering from stroke
to become a member of our group so that we may assist them progress on that journey,” said Gillian. The Shepparton Stroke Support Service is located at Community Health Centre, GV Health, 121 Corio Street, Shepparton and can be reached on 0448 693 298 or by email at shepparton@strokeassociation.com.au for more information.

Save our fence By Kelly Lucas I N September 2019, Deb Bower and Robert Cardalish took on their best renovation yet, the old Murchison Bank on River Road, Murchison. This heritage listed, but also derelict building, came with many challenges for the passionate renovators with the latest one taking them by surprise. The Shepparton Council has ordered them to remove the new cast iron fence and urns by December 6 or they will take them to VCAT to enforce the removal. The planning department determined the fence has a detrimental impact on the significance of the former bank building
and the Murchison central township precinct. “We have worked very hard to save, repair and enhance this heritage building in a way that is sympathetic to the era and to protect it from further deterioration,” said owner Deb Bower. Deb and Robert have taken the issue to the local community for help. To date there are over 300 handwritten and online signatures relating to the petition of saving their fence. If you would like to help Deb and Robert head to the Murchison Victoria Community Facebook page and search for their petition and link.

Organ donation encouraged
ORGAN DONATIONS SAVES LIVES... The parents of an organ donor listen to his heartbeat in the chest of its recipient. Photo: Supplied.
FU NDING for initiatives that enhance community awareness of organ and tissue donation is being provided to the tune of $750,000. Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, is encouraging community groups, local businesses, and not-for-profit organisations to apply for grants of up to $50,000 to help promote the importance of donation. Mr Drum said the grants could also fund creative measures that promote discussion among family and friends about donation, or activities that encourage more people to sign up on the Australian Organ Donor Register. “Organ and tissue donation are life-saving and lifechanging for recipients, yet there are still 13 million eligible Australians who have not yet registered their decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register,” Mr Drum said.
“We know nine out of ten families will agree to organ donation if their loved one is registered and they’ve spoken about it as a family, so these types of grants are crucial in helping us get the message out, and ultimately saving the lives of people on the Australian transplant wait list.” Applications can be made in one of three categories: 1. Broad-reaching national events 2. Media, public relations, or digital activities 3. Research / behavioural change projects or the development of education resources. Applications for this funding round close November 19, 2021. Multi-year funding of up to three years is available for national events applications. Successful applicants will be announced in February next year.

Federal funding for Nicholls community groups
IT’S duckling season, and with this, RSPCA Victoria, BirdLife Australia and Wildlife Victoria are encouraging the community to be on the lookout for ducklings who have been separated from their parents and raising awareness of how to respond and care for ducks in need. Ducks will commonly choose to nest in suburban backyards, especially those with pools and places to nest in safety. By seeking a nesting site away from her home watercourse and predators, a mother duck increases the chance of her ducklings’ survival. Within just 24 hours of hatching, parent ducks will escort their ducklings back to their home territory, which is sometimes when ducklings become separated from their parents and may require assistance from the public. “This journey home is the most important trip of a duckling’s life - the parents are teaching them how to make this trek by themselves and learn their way home. This important lesson time also teaches ducklings how to avoid predators and other dangers such as cars, along with how to feed properly and navigate the neighbourhood,” said RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker. “If you do come across ducklings who have been separated, often the parents will not be far away. The best approach is to observe the ducklings at a safe distance until their parents return. If after a few days, you’re still concerned about the welfare of the ducklings, you can contact a local wildlife carer for advice.” Dr Walker said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) ‘Help for Injured Wildlife Tool’ can help you locate the nearest wildlife carer in your area, and Wildlife Victoria’s Emergency Response Service can advise you on what to do with orphaned ducklings while you’re waiting for a volunteer rescuer to arrive. They can also help with advice if you find sick or injured ducks.

Lovell calls for funding support for new paediatric service at Mooroopna Early Learning Centre
Snake safety when you’re out camping AS temperatures soar in the coming weeks, our cold-blooded reptile friends are becoming more active and a lot more visible. Snakes are typically found in cool, dark, protected areas such as under buildings and near sheds, around rubble and stored materials, in electrical switch boxes and long grass. It’s also not uncommon for snakes to enter unattended open vehicles. "As we go into spring, it's the season to brush up on your snakebite first aid knowledge and ensure all Australians are doing what they can to coexist with our slithery friends," Australian Reptile Park head of reptiles, Daniel Rumsey said. About 3,0 0 0 people are bitten by snakes every year, with about 300 of them receiving antivenom and one or two bites, on average, proving fatal. If not treated immediately, a person can
die within 30 minutes depending on the amount of venom injected and the species of snake. Bite victims must be kept calm and still and have their whole injured limb pressure bandaged. PLEASE REMEMBER: If you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area Don’t attempt to capture or harm snakes. Instead call DELWP on 136 186 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher Undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately. Keep a snake specific safety kit on hand if possible.
the future. Although there are nine paediatricians based in the Goulburn Valley region, seven are based at GV Health and deal predominately with hospitalised children and the demand for paediatric services in the area is overwhelmingly high. Patients regularly wait a minimum of six months for an initial consultation and in some cases up to two years. Ms Lovell said that recent Australian Early Development Census data revealed that Greater Shepparton rates are above the State average in many categories of childhood disadvantage including physical disabilities, emotional problems, social deprivation, and communication.
Appointments to the boards of directors of public hospitals, multi purpose services and early parenting centres The Minister for Health, Martin Foley MP, is pleased to invite applications for part time board director positions of public hospitals, multi purpose services and early parenting centres with terms of office commencing from 1 July 2022. Safe and high quality healthcare for all Victorians is a priority of the Victorian Government. Applicants for board directorships must be able to demonstrate and provide evidence in support of the skills they identify in their applications. Collaboration, through the recently established Health Service Partnerships, is a key Victorian Government priority (https://www2.health.vic.gov.au/health-service-partnership). Applicants should have a demonstrated history of achievement through collaboration and partnering. Being able to demonstrate strong working relationships, particularly in the Victorian health sector, will be highly valued. These positions provide an exciting opportunity for members of the Victorian public with relevant experience and qualifications to contribute to the strategic leadership of public health care delivery to the community. The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring boards, and committees, broadly reflect the diversity of the Victorian community. Applications are welcomed from women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of all ages, people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse and intersex people. Sheed speaks out against rushed pandemic legislation notion that we know what we are doing. When we come to vote on this bill, we should ask ourselves: do we know what we are voting on?” Ms Sheed agreed that there should be fit-for-purpose pandemic legislation, but she needed the time to consult with the community and experts on the details of the bill. “There may be aspects of this bill that we could improve on, such as parliamentary oversight and transparency,” Ms Sheed said. Ms Sheed compared the debate of this legislation to the

What’s behind you doesn’t matter - Enzo Ferrari TIME to unpack the Hawaiian shirt and grow back the Mo, Ferrari 328 GTS has made an appearance at Shepparton’s MOVE. T he Ferrari 328 GTS (Type F106) is a mid-engine V8, two seat sports car created by Italian automobile manufacturer Ferrari. It was the successor to the Ferrari 308 GTB and GTS which was the model Magnum PI drove in the TV program. While mechanically still based on the 308, modifications were made to the body, chassis, and engine, most notably an increase in engine displacement to 3.2 L for increased power and torque output. The 328 is still considered by some enthusiasts to be one of the most reliable and functional Ferraris. The "328" numbers in the model title referred to the total cubic capacity of the

engine, 3.2 litres, and 8 for the number of cylinders. The 328 was the final evolution of the transversely mid-mounted, conventionally aspirated 90-degree V8 Dino engine. The transversely mounted engine is a popular way to save space on the rear-mid, rearwheel drive layout. Described as one of the most usable classic Ferraris because of its durable road record, history of appreciating value, and classical aesthetics, the 328-model remained in production for four years (1985 to 1989) GTS production totalled 6,068 vehicles The 328 uses the Ferrari Dino engine produced from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. It is a very similar engine design as that used in the 308 Quattrovalvole model. It has a naturally aspirated 3.2-litre (3185 cc), 4-valve-per-cylinder (quattro valve),
transverse mounted, rear mid-engine V8 layout The engine retained the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system of its predecessor, but was fitted with a Marelli MED 806 A electronic ignition system. It produces 201 kW and 313 Nm of torque. Its top speed is 267 km / h and reaches 10 0 km/h) in 5.5 seconds and 160 km/h in 13.0 seconds. As with the preceding 308 models the engine was mounted in unit with the all synchromesh five speed manual transmission assembly, which was below and to the rear of the engine's wet sump. Intake air allow the car to be used harder and more reliably. The car could have produced significantly more power but for commercial reasons Ferrari management decided to keep it below the 270 PS of the naturally aspirated 328.

SPORT
Sport is back, but our clubs need a hand COMMUNITY SPORTS has been given the go-ahead, with no vaccination requirement for participation, allowing communities to reconnect with their clubs. Valley Sport, alongside Regional Sport Victoria, has gathered data which indicates that since the beginning of the pandemic, 30 percent of clubs have seen a reduction of up to 25 percent in volunteers. Simultaneously, there was a 42 percent decrease in participation across clubs and associations around regional Victoria. A declining volunteer base can be the difference between having a team participate or club events going ahead, which can have a significant flow on effect for many clubs and communities. Similar data from Sports Australia has identified volunteering as the lifeblood for organised competition with an increasing number of opportunities identified, particularly for those with a disability, retirees, low-income households, and
people who speak a language other than English. Valley Sport encourages all people to give local sport and active recreation a go by joining or volunteering at a club or sports organisation. The rewards you receive from volunteering your time to community in clubs and groups has been linked to positive mental, social, and physical benefits, as well as a feeling of greater life satisfaction. Executive officer at Valley Sport, David Quinn said, “Volunteers are the glue that holds our community club's fabric together, without them there can be no community sport. I urge anyone who is considering on putting up their hand to do so as you will be welcomed with open arms and many hands really do make light work. If your club needs further assistance in this space, in member or volunteer retention and recruitment you can contact Valley Sport on 5831 8456 or valleysport.net.au or by emailing clubsupport@valleysport.net.au
