SAM BIRRELL’S LOCAL PLAN FOR NICHOLLS Cost of Living

Water and Agriculture

We’re helping families out by reducing fuel prices, and delivering one-off payments to support those on lower and middle incomes to cope with increasing cost of goods due to Covid related pressures, in addition to our long term tax cuts.

The Nationals back agriculture.

Health Care

We will ensure that no more water leaves our region, and stop the 450 GL of extra water being taken from our region and sent to South Australia.

The Murray Darling Medical School, a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Latrobe University, creates a medical degree totally delivered in regional Victoria. The end result will be 30 new graduate doctors each year who have spent the final four years of their degree program in Shepparton. We will deliver a new Clinical Health School, which will train many more nurses and allied health professionals in Shepparton. This collaboration between GV Health and Latrobe University will see a significant increase in nursing staff for our aged care providers and our hospitals.

Recovery from Covid

The main support our farmers need right now are workers, and we have established the Ag Visa that helps bring workers into the country for a variety of agriculture-related positions that we are struggling to fill.

Roads and Rail The Shepparton Rail Corridor will be significantly improved with the Federal government committing to nine daily return services between Melbourne and Shepparton. Locals will be able to enjoy a faster and more comfortable journey on Vlocity trains. Our roads have been neglected by Dan Andrews and Labor. We will get you and your family home safe by upgrading local roads and bridges.

After successfully navigating Australia through the pandemic, thanks to JobKeeper and a successful vaccine rollout, we’re growing our economy and enhancing our strong position. Agriculture Visas and a Designated Area Migration Agreement will bring workers to our region to help our businesses take advantage of the next opportunities.

Boosting our local economy and creating new opportunities for our kids by delivering the Shepparton Sports and Events Centre. Delivering more healthcare professionals through the new Latrobe GV Health Clinical Health School. Supporting community sport by upgrading the Yarrawonga Sports Stadium.

Winter Night Shelter calls for volunteers By Deanne Jeffers REGISTRATIONS are required to support the Greater Shepparton Winter Night Shelter, so that vulnerable locals will have access to a warm bed during winter. The Winter Shelter provides 10 beds with

the help of seven Shepparton churches and volunteers from June 1 until August 31. “Currently we are looking for more volunteers this year, and I can only stress how wonderful the experience is for both parties,” said returning volunteer, Jan Borzillo.

“Having experienced the shelter last year being a volunteer. I think I got just as much out of it as our guests. It's such an overwhelming experience.” Continued Page 7

the existing sporting courts to provide a multipurpose space for students, staff, and the wider community,” said principal, Les Walsh. “In 2019, this vision was finally realised allowing our school to utilise the new facilities as a place to conduct undercover physical education lessons, assemblies, concerts, ceremonies, performances, as well as allowing for a space that can be accessed by the wider Shepparton East community.” The school council and key stakeholders set a fundraising target of $200,000 and subsequently raised around $130,000 in sponsorship. The pavilion was named after local philanthropist, Peter Copulos, for his generous donation of $50,000. “My wife, Maria and I are very pleased to be here today for the opening of the sports pavilion. It’s been great to be involved in providing funds

for the structure. We’ve had many of our family members who have attended the school over the years,” said Mr Copulos. Peter Copulos has supported several local causes over the years, including Shepparton Art Museum, Goulburn Valley Health, GV Hospice, and many more. With nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, “so far,” it is no surprise that the Copulos family have invested in improving the school’s facilities. “Primary school is such an important part of a small local community like Shepparton East,” said Mr Copulos. Principal Les thanked all the sponsors, past and present families, and the school council for their contributions which ensured the pavilion came to fruition.

GUESTS receive a safe place to stay during the coldest months of the year and a hot meal. The Winter Night Shelter goes one step further to address barriers vulnerable people face, such as missing essential documents. “Some of them are very lonely and some are very disconnected,” said Cr Kim O’Keeffe, who volunteers. “We are very mindful that they are very vulnerable, and we don’t want to smother them, dictate, or take control of their lives, but we certainly want to give them the opportunity to make some improvements.” Project committee member, Mary-Ann Demase, said many skills are useful but the main requirement is to like people. During registration, volunteers choose hours and roles that suit them. “Perhaps you have cooking skills, and you

Fraud detection expert AS tax time rolls around each year, and we all start paying more attention to our finances, someone else is paying attention – the scammer. Opportunistic scammers take advantage of the complex and often daunting tax period to target consumers in an attempt to steal their money and their personal information. These can take the form of phone calls, e-mails or other messages claiming to be from the ATO and detailing tax debts, refunds, fake TFN and ABN applications, and cryptocurrency tax evasions. But there are simple ways you can protect yourself, says gmcu fraud officer, Maddi Schultz. "The first thing to keep in mind is that the ATO and other government agencies will generally not contact you with an SMS urging you to click a link, or a threatening phone call. If you are contacted, it's always recommended you hang up, find the ATO's contact number from their official website, and use that to call them back. This way you can verify you're speaking to the real organisation and can then confirm whether there is an outstanding matter or not.

PROTECING YOUR FUNDS... gmcu fraud officer, Maddi Schultz, is there to protect you from pesky scammers. Photo: Stephanie Holliday

"Trust your instincts and pay attention if something doesn't feel right. Scammers can become aggressive and attempt to rush you, causing you to panic, but you should never be afraid to simply end the conversation to give yourself time to think. If you are afraid that you have been the victim of a scam, or have given your information to somebody you shouldn't

have, contact your financial institution as soon as possible." An important way to protect yourself from scams is to stay informed. To learn more about the latest scams, and for information and tips to stay safe, visit official government sources such as www.scamwatch.gov.au/ and www.cyber. gov.au/.

I have volunteered for local groups including management committees, sports clubs and charities. I know how important communities are. Q2: WHAT ARE THE MAIN ISSUES FACING THE ELECTORATE RIGHT NOW? The cost of living, medical care and housing require immediate attention. We have had years of under-investment in secure employment,

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR NICHOLLS? To be a region with strong economic activity that provides wellpaid careers for young people, showcases our world-class food production, educational facilities, and continues to lead on the positive benefits of multiculturalism and entrepreneurship.

Cost of living, labour shortages, water, which is the main driver of our future economic growth, and the opportunities around new

infrastructure, aged care and young people. Q4: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF THE MURRAYDARLING BASIN PLAN (MDBP)? The plan was supposed to balance the health of the rivers with the needs of the communities and the demands of producers. The plan has been poorly managed for a very long time. The Authority needs to be more transparent. I support a complete review of the plan. Q5: WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR NICHOLLS? Stronger communities with local opportunities to secure jobs and keep families closer. Better health care with more home-grown health workers looking after the people and the communities they love.

Important notice of farmer class action CLASS ACTION... Information sessions are being held this Friday May 20 for dairy farmers in Shepparton and surrounds who were impacted by Fonterra’s revised milk prices in 2016. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.

DAIRY farmers affected by Fonterra’s May 2016 farmgate milk price step down are invited to participate in a class action seeking compensation. In May 2016, Fonterra retrospectively revised milk prices it had set for the season with no notice to farmers. Those affected were forced to effectively return money that Fonterra had already paid them, at great harm to business and farming families. The case, which is currently underway in the Supreme Court of Victoria, alleges that Fonterra engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct, acted unconscionably and breached contracts it had with dairy farmers. Farmers who have been affected, and are seeking compensation, are urged to attend an information session this Friday, where they can register to participate in the class action. Bridget and Tim Goulding, owners of Ulupna Dairy Farm in Katunga, said they struggled with the dramatic adjustments they had to make to keep their business afloat.

“We are already a small operation but had to immediately cut cow numbers by 30 head. We had to set up payment plans with fodder suppliers, speak to the bank, and take the FASL loan which kept us tied to Fonterra. The drop in income coupled with the additional loan debt has made recovery slow,” Mr Goulding said. “It was particularly difficult dealing with Fonterra field officers that were towing the company line that what they had done was ethical. The supplier meetings were also a hopeless and draining process.” “We want to encourage anyone who was affected by this step down to join the class action and bring some accountability to Fonterra both for how they’ve acted in the past and how they deal with suppliers moving forward.” Farmers seeking compensation are invited to an information session at the Shepparton Golf Club, 15 Golf Dr, Shepparton this Friday, May 20, at midday.

White Night date revealed

A DATE has been announced for Shepparton’s upcoming inaugural White Night. The night of Saturday, June 25, Shepparton will be lit up, attracting thousands to the city of Greater Shepparton. Pedestrian safety operation focus BE ALERT... Shepparton Highway Patrol’s leading senior constable, Murray Moser and police around the country will be targeting pedestrian safety this week for National Road Safety Week, as pedestrian deaths continue to grow. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.

NATIONAL Road Safety Week kicked off this week. This year’s campaign is targeting pedestrian safety. Pedestrian deaths have more than doubled this year compared to last year with 14 deaths recorded compared to six for the same time in 2021. Today, all police forces across the country are holding a day of action in relation to pedestrian safety. Police and highway patrol will be watching out for pedestrians, targeting school crossings and distracted drivers. “On Wednesday, our focus of our operation is on the safety of pedestrians all

week and the safety of all road users,” said Acting Senior Sergeant, Tom Brown. “Instances of pedestrian deaths are way too high right now and we need to do what we can to curb those numbers and not let them get any higher,” he said. The National Day of Action comes in time for National Walk to School Day, happening this Friday. Children are back at school and on Friday, more students will be walking to class than usual. Please be mindful if you are driving. Similarly, be careful crossing roads, avoid jaywalking, and be aware of your surroundings.

What’s even rarer than a diamond? LOOKING FOR HIDDEN TREASURES… Gemologist and Field trip reference coordinator, George Fadersen, holds a piece of his handiwork, a polished agate and his precious pooch, Penny. Photo: Deanne Jeffers

DIAMONDS may have a reputation for being rare and desirable, but there are gems in the world that are even more eye-catching and rarer still. With names like musgravite, jadeite, alexandrite or red-beryl, some gemstones are more valuable than diamonds, but their names may not seem familiar to many. Musgravite was discovered in 1967 and is arguably the rarest gemstone in the world. It was first discovered in Australia’s Musgrave Ranges. As for gem-quality stones, there are about ten

specimens known and documented. At the core of these rare gemstones are the people that forge into the wilderness in search for them. George Fadersen, field trip reference coordinator, has spent the best part of the last few decades seeking out gemstones in Australia and around the world. He leads a small informal group of fossickers, known as the Goulburn Valley Gem and Mineral Craft Group based in Shepparton who search, and then cut and polish magnificent gems into thing of beauty.

Bringing these beauties out into the open to trade or sell, or simply to show how it is done, the GV Gem and Mineral Craft Groupare hosting the Gem, Jewellry & Mineral Show, at Quest Shepparton Racing, Goulburn Valley Highway, Kialla, on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22, 2022. Labor Will: 1. The people of Nicholls deserve a strong advocate at the federal level. I have seen first-hand the needs of the region as a serial volunteer and committee member, I want to use my knowledge and skills to represent the people of Nicholls. 2. In times when the current government is saying the economy is booming, it’s not booming for everybody. There are people struggling very hard out there with the cost of living and the affordability of life. They need to know that Labor are fundamentally the party that looks after people and recognise it’s not their fault if they’re struggling. 3. Labor will deliver a future where no one is held back and no one is left behind.

4. Only Labor has real plans for a better future. A better life for you and your family. Secure, well-paid jobs so you can plan for the future. A future made in Australia.

7. Labor will support more investment in aged care: better conditions for residents and workers. Respect for our older citizens. Nurses on-site 24/7. More carers getting better pay.

5. Labor has committed to a new bulk-billing Urgent Care Centre in Shepparton. I am pushing hard for another in Echuca.

8. Medications will cost less under Labor by reducing the maximum copayment from $42.20 to $30 per script.

$1.75M pledge for producers FEDERAL Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud, announced funding $1.75M to assist growers in boosting their bargaining power and improving market transparency in Ardmona last week. He said a grant of $653,950 would be provided to a consortium led by Fresh Market Australia (FMA) under the Federal Government’s $5.94M program to improve market transparency across perishable goods supply chains. NO VOTE FOR BULLIES

So please, take a good look at how you treat people. I ask everyone do not vote for the reported bullies (the mean girls) and the cover up by the Federal Labor leader and his deputy. A vote for Federal Labor is a vote for bullies. I ask all people who have been bullied to ask your family and friends to not vote for them. Think carefully. Do you want the reported bullies and the people who covered it up in control of our Australia? How can anyone trust them? I don’t, do you? Valerie Peterson Shepparton

Interesting then that after hearing nothing for years about the floods in Numurkah in 2012, suddenly there is money for flood mitigation works in that town. All of a sudden there are multiple visits to this region from Barnaby Joyce splashing money around this area for upgrades to the sports stadium, promising a new clinical health school facility and other rural health announcements. If is this is the sort of attention we get before independent, Rob Priestly faces the voters in Nicholls, imagine what could be achieved if we send Rob to Canberra! Coupled with the recent achievements for our region achieved by our State Independent member, Suzanna Sheed, detailed in the News on Wed 4 May, surely the response to anyone who tells you that independents can’t get anything done will be to “tell ‘em they’re dreamin’”. CANDIDATE WON’T SELL OFF AUSTRALIA

Dear Editor, FOR years many people in this Northern Victorian region have been advocating the position that our region would be far better off when it comes to all sorts of service and infrastructure delivery if the seat of Murray/ Nicholls became a marginal electorate. But unfathomably, the voters of this electorate have always returned a coalition member with a massive majority.

At this time, Gough Whitlam’s Labor Party was in power. The Liberal-National government of Malcom Fraser went ahead and accepted it. On July 20, 1978, the then-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Andrew Peacock gave an address to the Victorian Branch of the Australian Institute of International Affairs. The following is text from that speech, page 5. “The transfer of technology to developing countries is another basic concern. We are participating actively in the work in the United Nation’s system, aimed at drawing up a code of conduct for the transfer of technology. I am convinced that the developing countries would make rapid strides if the technology appropriate to their needs was made much more freely available to them.” “It is clear that the research and d e velopm e nt c apacit y of d e veloped countries could be readily and relatively cheaply directed to that objective. In the field of Industrialisation, Australia has broadly accepted the Lima Declaration and Plan of Action on Industrial development an d coope ration . We will the refore assist in action designed to accelerate industrialisation in developing countries

and will be participating fully in the relevant international consultations on that objective.” Since that time in 1975 and on, Australia has lost over 65 percent of its manufacturing base that has either shut down or gone overseas, and 175,000 family farmers have left their farms while we import $8.9B of food into Australia. The Lima Declaration spelt the beginning of the end for farming and manufacturing in Australia and that is why I am standing at this Federal Election. I refuse to vote for political parties who have sold this country out, even though 99.9 percent of the population doesn’t even know. SOCIAL POVERTY IN NICHOLLS WHO will address the high level of social poverty in Nicholls? In the state of Victoria, our conservative vote since Jeff Kennett’s radical privatisation of the public service has led to costly contractors providing home and community services, outdoor work at the local government level. Childcare and aged services, health welfare and public education, social housing and transport have all been impacted. Suicide is rising in our farmers, youth, and many others without adequate mental health services. Here we are in 2022 with 1.4M Australian children living in poverty and in Nicholls alone, the rate in community is almost 50 percent. The Federal GST (2001) has hurt Victoria and more so rural areas with unfair provision for all essential services. The poor now include our farmers and Food Bowl producers leaving home with little or nothing. Migrants and refugees have expanded those service needs. The goodwill and support provided by the many volunteers and donors is recognised and adds great value to our diverse community. In our 2014 state election, Suzanna Sheed, a family law specialist with knowledge of how the other half lives, pledged her independent role would be to negotiate effectively with whomever formed government to address

those dire public problems. This has resulted in almost $1B in infrastructure for essential services. My personal knowledge of Independent Rob Priestly’s work as a committee member for Greater Shepparton , Suzanna Sheed’s member of 2015 appointed community advisory group for GV Hospital redevelopment Stage 1 now completed, and Councillor in recess, gives him the qualifications to make a difference for the diverse community of Nicholls. THANKS TO COALITION FOR COT TAGE SUPPORT T he C ot t age i n St A nd rews Road , Shepparton celebrates five years since opening its 23 bed facility on June 17, 2022. It has provided safe stable accommodation and access to this communities wonderful Alcohol or Other Drugs (AOD) services to over 400 men and women who otherwise would have languished in prison or despair or both. Many residents have followed the path to recovery and are enjoying all life has to offer like family, home ownership, relationships, work, education and peace. Please check the website for testimony to that at www. thecottage.org.au The Cottage had its impetus in the unmet demand for its alcohol and other drug rehabilitation services and facilitation. 70 percent of residents are bailed to The Cottage whilst 30 percent are from the community. This facility had many detractors in its

early days and understandably neighbours were concerned at potential trouble and falling house values adjacent to the facility. Thankfully neither has happened. Not one emergency call out to police and our neighbours house prices have gone up with the trend in the area. This efficient and effective addiction treatment model gained support on two fronts. Firstly, Cheryl Hammer through the Fairley Foundation provided seed funding of $25,000 per year for three years and then recently retired Nationals Federal member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, through Minister Hunt’s office has provided $100,000 per year ongoing. That is the equivalent of $1,000 per resident to subsidise their own contribution to their recovery. They must have “Skin in the game” as Damian put it. I am grateful that Cheryl along with Sam Birrell spearheaded an independent review along with Cottage residents through Think Impact which concluded that empowerment and awareness is the way out of powerlessness of addiction. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the lives turned around whilst at The Cottage. Kind regards, Robert Bryant Secretary, The Cottage Want to have your say? New multi-million-dollar transformation brings 230 new full-time jobs to Goulburn Valley THE 100 percent Australian-owned and operated HW Greenham & Sons, is transforming its Tongala processing facility, creating an additional 230 new full time jobs. The most significant capital investment in the company’s history will see the new state-of-the-art facility produce premium quality beef for more than 25 countries around the world and create new employment opportunities for the local community. Greenham managing director, Peter Greenham said while in the past the Tongala facility had been focused on producing lean grinding meat for export markets, Greenham’s more recently acquired facilities in Tasmania and Gippsland had built an enviable reputation for producing high-quality beef brands, including Cape Grim, Bass Strait, and Altair Wagyu. “Tongala was our first home, and we’re pleased to invest in the facility as we see an exciting opportunity for the Goulburn Valley region within the Australian beef industry,” Peter said. “Our brands are strongly supported by Australian cattle producers who are part of Greenham’s lifetime traceable programs, which give access to key retail and foodservice customers, and this expansion at Tongala will allow our

business to grow with that demand. “It also provides new opportunities for beef producers in the Goulburn Valley to join our supplier program, and for locals in the community seeking career opportunities at a growing state-of-the-art workplace.” The new facility will be custom designed with the latest processing equipment, increasing Greenham Tongala’s production capability from 50t/day to 200t/day and opening access to more than 10 new export markets. Grow your career with Greenham Greenham offers a range of fulfilling roles, including operations, administration, quality assurance, logistics, maintenance, livestock, sales, marketing, finance, safety, and human resources. On offer from Greenham is a comprehensive and nationally accredited training to all staff, including Cert II, Cert III and Cert IV in meat processing, abattoirs, boning rooms, slaughtering, meat safety, forklifts, quality assurance and livestock handling, leading to a fully recognised meat processing trade qualification. EDUCATION Week is always a time of celebration, but this year’s feels extra special. This year, Victoria is marking the historic milestone of 150 years of public education, and it is the theme of this Education Week. Of the schools opened in 1872, the year the public education act was enshrined into law, more than 150 state schools are still open today. In 2022, there are now more than 1500 schools providing education to Victorian communities, cementing our future as the Education State. Public education has changed lives, there’s no doubt about that. It is the great enabler. We know that with the right support, every child thrives. During Education Week — from 22–28 May — I encourage every student, parent, carer, teacher, and educator to take part in the variety of events and activities being held across the state. You will get so much out of it. This year is all about commemorating the past,

celebrating the present and imagining the future of education here in Victoria. It’s an opportunity for all schools, higher education providers and early childhood education and care services to showcase their role in our state’s education story. A story that now includes successfully navigating all the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Victorians are also invited to contribute to a 150 Years of Public Education digital time capsule by emailing school memories, be they photos, reports, or trivia, to 150years@education.vic.gov.au. For details of events in your area, go tovic.gov.au/education-week-2022 or for more information about 150 year celebrations visit vic.gov.au/150years. I encourage everyone to celebrate and support public education in Victoria and Education Week 2022. The Hon James Merlino MP Deputy Premier Minister for Education

Give your children the best start in life with Catholic education. The Adviser. Australia No.1:1611 Wednesday, May 18, 2022 – Page 25

Years of Public Education

Give your children a head start By Stephanie Holliday CHILDREN are born ready to learn, and their brains develop through use. They require a stimulating environment with lots of different ways to play and learn and also plenty of chances to practice what they’re learning. Babies and young children learn best when they have warm, engaged and responsive relationships with their main carers and peers. Lots of time spent playing and interacting with others helps children learn the skills they need for life – like communicating, thinking, problemsolving, moving and being with other people. Playgroups are informal, low cost and gives families and carers the chance to meet other people going through

similar experiences and break down the isolation that can come with caring for young children. Families can be gently introduced to community, health and support services while they are at playgroup. “Participation in playgroups is such a wonderful way for children to increase their school readiness. It gives children early exposure to learning and socialising with their peers, giving them a head start,” The Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, said. “School readiness increases the likelihood children will enjoy and succeed at school." With many playgroups in the Greater Shepparton Region, the ability to facilitate your child’s early learning is easily accessible.

Bourchier Street Primary School’s values of respect , learning and contribution guide their daily decisions and allow them to place students at the centre of everything they do. “We pride ourselves on delivering excellent educational outcomes for

each and every learner. We are very proud of our incredibly passionate and dedicated teachers. They collectively make every day full of curiosity, fun and learning,” Principal, Denise Howley said. The school is designed to deliver excellent outcomes. Straight year levels and small class sizes ensure that the knowledge and skills of every student in every class are identified and extended. High quality, evidence-based group instruction aims to lift the performance of all and is supplemented with regular small group and individualised instruction. “We aim to educate the ‘whole’ child. Supporting diverse learners

FOCUS GROUP... Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed has co-chaired a tailor made focus group to explore educational models for diverse learners. Photo: Supplied.

THE first Diverse Learners Focus Group has come together, made up of Sheppar ton district community s t a ke h o l d e r s , i n c l u d i n g p a r e n t , teacher, medical, multicultural, student representation and co-chaired by Independent Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed. “ We want to explore options on what type of education model will suit diverse learners in mainstream

education and bring it back to the s tudents , teachers , and p arents of Greater Sheppar ton Secondary College,” Ms Sheed said. “A s it s tands , there are som e students with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder who receive a level of financial support, others with the same characteristics but who are not diagnosed and therefore unfunded, and also students who may have some

autistic characteristics. The group was briefed by someone with lived experience of the lack of resources, understanding, and sometimes intolerance of issues he faced at school such as light or noise sensitivity. While he had found ways to cope on his own, there is still significant lack of understanding of the needs of diverse learners. “ With all our secondar y school students now on the one campus, the capacity to design innovative programs across the nine schools at Greater Shepparton Secondary College has never been better. The capacity to pool resources, undertake professional education and design spaces to ensure better educational outcomes must be a priority for this group and we look forward to continuing to have further meetings and discussions to eventually achieve a model that will suit our students,” said Ms Sheed. “ O n c e a n ew m o d e l is wid e l y supported by students, their families, and teachers, it can be adopted and amended as needed by the school with the ongoing support of the group. This will be an inclusive approach which will fit with government policy and enable us to seek any additional support we need from government to implement it.”

FOR those who haven’t previously studied or are studying a course that isn’t right for them, beginning a course in the middle of the year can be a great option. Mid-year entry allows new students to enter a course in the middle of the year, often with catchup options, such as summer semesters, that ensure they will graduate on time. Mid-year entry may be a good fit... 1# If you missed out on a place in your first preference course in semester one and took a place in your second or third preference. Many education providers allocate additional places in the middle of the year, giving you another chance to study what interests you. 2# If you chose the wrong course and feel stuck, mid-year is an opportunity to course correct and you may be eligible for

credits earned during semester one. 3# If you take time off after finishing school, mid-year is an optimal time to move back into education after working, travelling or relaxing. 4# If you need flexible study options, whether you’re a mature student studying for the first time or returning for a second degree, starting mid-year can provide extra flexibility. You may have had commitments at the beginning of the year, like getting kids into school, or perhaps you want extra time before you commit to a possibly lengthy degree. Remember to check with your education provider whether they provide mid-year intake and whether this is available for your course. For more information, visit www. vtac.edu.au/

Boarding at Wesley College, Glen Waverley WESLEY is renowned for its strong academic outcomes and exceptional learning experiences. ‘Learning in Residence’, a contemporary, innovative and student-centred program for students in Years 9 to 12, provides a safe, nurturing ‘home away from home’ for boarders at our Glen Waverley campus. “Although it is hard to send your children so far away from home, we

were comforted by the knowledge that the staff at Wesley Boarding go beyond what we expected in their care of our children and that the facilities for sport and education were outstanding. We watched Antonio go into Wesley as a boy and return as a responsible, respectful and capable young man who is now at university. Our other son Christian is well on his way,” said Tessa Vaitohi,

NUMURK AH Pre-School creates an inclusive, nurturing environment for all children which fosters confidence, independence and encourages active learning through a play-based curriculum. The early childhood period of children's lives has a profound impact on their learning and development for the long term. From birth to eight years, children's developing brains undergo a rapid change. This is when children have the greatest opportunities to develop neutral pathways for learning. After an inability to do so for two years, Numurkah Pre-School will open their doors on May 23 for an Open Day where they encourage parents to come along and see what the centre has to offer. Applications for enrolments for fourand three-year-old kindergarten are available from the Centre. For more

Life changing cultural experience By Deanne Jeffers STUDENTS at Shepparton ACE Secondary College are being sent on the trip of a lifetime. 10 students will represent the college on an international trip to Cambodia and Vietnam in September. For Sharni Wilson, this will be the first time someone in her family has travelled overseas and for most of the students, this is the first trip they will take outside of Australia. “There’s no cost for any of the families, which is fantastic. The school will cover everything and if people need help with passports or paperwork, we will help them with that too,” said Joel Hoffman, senior social worker at the college. “This is a school that aims to provide opportunities to those who may not have the resources to do so,” he said. “It’s to ensure students get a cultural and educational This is where the school’s experience outside Australia. money needs to go, it The trip is also connected to the curriculum, and it’s just a lovely needs to go back into our WORLD TRAVELLERS... What an exciting time for education in our region

THE SHEPPARTON EDUCATION PLAN After years of campaigning for better education for our young people, I am delighted to see the Shepparton Education Plan roll out and benefit our students. The $140 million plan included the building of our state-of-the-art Greater Shepparton Secondary College, which opened earlier this year. Merging four schools together to ensure better facilities and resources was a huge task

but worthwhile when we see secondary school students enjoying the same – if not a better – educational experience as their metropolitan counterparts.

Part of the plan was the establishment of the Children and Families Centre, where three and four-year-old kindergarten students thriving in the stunning new facility. The centre has everything young children need to begin their educational journey and help them transition easily into primary school.

The fourth stage of the plan has been unveiled, which focuses on the pathway to tertiary education. I am excited to see how this huge investment in education will lift the aspirations of our students today and for decades to come.

Preparing your child for boarding school STARTING boarding school is a huge step for children and families alike. To help your child prepare and to make boarding school a positive learning experience, try these helpful tips: #1 Talk about it Talk to your child about how they are feeling about going to boarding school and being away from home. They could be excited, anxious, or a mix of both. Assure them it is normal to feel nervous, and other kids will feel the same way. Talk through any concerns and help your child identify strategies to deal with them. #2 Be positive Parents can find it hard to send their child away for their education. Try to be positive and enthusiastic when talking with your child so that

your feelings don’t rub off on them. Children are very adaptable, and with support and time, most grow to love the experience of boarding school. #3 Encourage independence At boarding school, your child will be responsible for organising themselves and their possessions, perhaps for the first time. Begin instilling this responsibility now by putting them in charge of a list of what they are taking. Find out what chores your child will need to do for themselves and give them the opportunity to practice at home. For more advice, please visit www. learningpotential.gov.au/articles/ preparing-your-child-for-boardingschool.

Achieving dreams in the regions

I chose to study in Shepparton as it was important to me to not uproot my children's lives and move them somewhere else away from family. I also prefer the close-knit community Shepparton has. Billie-Ann Dillon, La Trobe University Student

STUDENT at La Trobe University, Billie-Ann Dillon, is currently studying Social Work at the Shepparton Campus. “I chose to study in Shepparton as it was important to me to not uproot my children's lives and move them somewhere else away from family. I also prefer the close-knit community Shepparton has.” Billie-Ann says that studying regionally and anticipating being employed in the region gives her a sense of giving back to the community that she says has supported and nurtured herself and her family for many years. “I chose La Trobe because of my initial experience when I first enquired about the course that I was interested in. The support and encouragement from the very beginning gave me a glimpse into what my future studies would entail.” “The best part about studying at a regional campus is the personal community we have here. La Trobe in Shepparton is a small campus, but all the staff and students you encounter throughout the day are always friendly and kind. It is this positive influence that makes regional an appealing option, I don't feel lost in thousands of students.”

Next week they will hold their inaugural Motorcycle Swap Meet and postie bike muster Sunday, May 29. “Honda postie bikes have been around for 60 years. Allan has a collection but his latest addition, a 2021 KTM 390 Adventure bike, has already clocked 600,000kms by the passionate rider. He says it is a light bike,

which makes it easier to handle and comes with a range of safety and lifestyle features. Todd Huggard and beloved 1972 HarleyDavidson 1200 cc 4-speed electra glide is a touring style bike, by contrast this bike is vastly different from the adventure. He’s owned it for five years. Andrew Tynan’s 2012 Triumph Tiger is one of his latest additions to his collection, purchasing the 800cc adventure bike from a local seller in Nathalia. In three months, he has recorded 400,000kms. The bike has a 3-cylinder liquid fuel motor. The tyres on adventure bikes are suited for off-road and road riding. GVMCC meet at in Undera on the third Wednesday each month. The following week they explore the regions on a ‘tea ride’, where the club ventures to a country pub for dinner and a night away.

SEYMOUR V SHEPPARTON UNITED

Tip: Rochester.

SEYMOUR will be looking to end a run of defeats when it welcomes Shepparton United to Kings Park. The Lions won the opening day of the season before slumping to five consecutive losses to teams all vying for a place in the top six. Coach Ben Davey knows the Lions need to start winning to avoid the risk of falling too far behind the top six teams. United will come to Seymour fresh off a nail-biting win last weekend. The Demons held onto victory by four points and they will turn to Joel Serra, Edward Adams, Adam Pigatto, Kaedyn Napier, Mitchell Trevaskis and skipper Kyle Clarke to try and lead the way against the Lions. If they can keep the likes of Jack Murphy, Ben Rigoni, James Wooster, Riley Mason and Nicholas Quigg at bay then the visitors are every chance of an upset win. Tip: Seymour.

MANSFIELD V SHEPPARTON SWANS Mansfield will be looking to consolidate its place in the top six when it welcomes the Shepparton Swans. The Eagles take winning form in after accounting for Tatura at home last weekend while the Swans gave a good account of themselves in their loss to Rochester. Sam Thomson, Jack Hutchins, Harry Mahoney, Ben Christopher (five goals) and Dirk Koenen will be important players for the Eagles today. If they can continue their form and keep the likes of Andrew Riordan, Zac Banch, Bryden Squire, Ben Gilberto and Diesel Batey at bay, then the home team should take home the four points. Tip: Mansfield.

SHEPPARTON V ROCHESTER

TATURA V ECHUCA

Rochester will be looking to consolidate its place on top of the GVL ladder when it takes on Shepparton. The Bears suffered a heavy defeat to this year’s premiership favourite and it proved a huge reality check. Mitchell Brett, Edward Lindon, Tyler Bell, Jordan McGregor and Miles Rowlands will be the Bears trying to lead by example and the home team will be hoping Anthony Andronaco returns to give them a target up forward. Shaun Atley, Jordan Harper, Nathan Kay, Mitch Cricelli and Joseph Atley will be important for the Tigers to ensure they get the win.

Echuca will be looking to continue its good form when it takes on Tatura. The Bulldogs showed patches of good form in their loss to the Eagles last weekend while the Green Machine was ruthless in brushing aside the young Bears. Billy Cooper, Mitchell Elliott, Chris Ryan, James Bennett and Sean McAllister will be looking to continue their good form while the visitors will look to Jack McHale, Sam Willoughby, Daniel Willis, Cooper Willoughby (five goals), Logan Prout and Ben Reid to lead the way. Tip: Echuca.

GVL netball round 7 by Sam Saracino SEYMOUR V SHEPPARTON UNITED Seymour and Shepparton United will go into battle with the prize a spot in the top two of the GVL ladder for the winner. Seymour came into the contest in first place after back-to-back wins against Echuca and Kyabram over the past fortnight. United was able to bounce from its first loss of the season in round five to ensure Kara Blizzard’s milestone game was one to celebrate. Olivia Kirby and Laura Cole will be important for the visitors when they go up against Ellie O’Sullivan and Jess Lallo. Jessie Barnes will go head-to-head with gun Lion defender Sarah Szczykulski. This battle will go a long way to deciding who is in front at the final whistle. Momentum will be important and the team that can capitalise on that will win the four points. Tip: United. BENALLA V MOOROOPNA Mooroopna will be looking to consolidate its place in the top six when it makes the trip to Benalla. Benalla gave a good account of itself early against the Demons, but couldn’t sustain the effort. Hayley Martiniello, Kellie Keen and Kelsey Pallpratt will be important for the home team while the Cats will look to star goal-keeper Maddison Wong to continue her good form. The Cats will be hoping to welcome back

defender Ash Lancaster, Elle Brooks and Genna Ogier who all missed last week’s narrow victory over Euroa. I think the Cats can get the job done against the Saints. Tip: Mooroopna. SHEPPARTON V ROCHESTER Shepparton will be looking to bounce back from its heavy defeat at the hands of Echuca last weekend. Rochester fell short against the Shepparton Swans and it will be looking to stay in touch with the top six and a defeat today will mean it falls six points behind the Bears. The Bears will know the importance of today’s game and coach Tracey Brereton will be imploring her girls to take their opportunities to ensure they get the win. Crucial to the home team winning will be the experience of the Bears. If they can get on top early in the game then the Bears will win. Tip: Shepparton. MANSFIELD V SHEPPARTON SWANS Shepparton Swans will be shooting for a third straight win after a slow start to 2022. Coach Courtney Simpson has done a fantastic job with her girls. She has blooded some youngsters, with an eye on the future and they girls have got some reward in the past fortnight. Sophie Atkinson, Klarindah Hudson and Hannah Garner were crucial in the win over

the Tigers last weekend and they should lead the visitors to another win. Tip: Shepparton Swans. KYABRAM V EUROA This will be interesting game for different reasons. Kyabram has been competitive without tasting success since the opening two rounds of the season, while Euroa has been consistent in 2022 with four wins and two losses. Euroa is likely to be without playing coach Ellie Warnock who went off with an injury early in the first quarter last week. Tylah Marchbank, Bree Poole and Kellie Davidson stood tall in the narrow loss to the Cats. If they can continue that form coupled with the inclusion of boom recruits Bridget Hill and Emily Andrew, then the visitors should be able to keep the likes of Holly Reid, Elivia Hall and Chicky Vick at bay. Tip: Euroa. TATURA V ECHUCA Echuca will be looking to continue its winning form. Coach Steph Vick returned for the Murray Bombers who bounced back from their loss in round 5. There were also some other familiar faces who returned to the court in the big win over Shepparton.

ON FIRE... The Tatura Bulldogs v The Mooroopna Cats over the weekend. Photo: Rosemary Hedges

The team’s shooters were outstanding to throw down more than 70 goals. Tatura’s defenders are going to have a challenge on its own hands. That said they were fantastic in the Bulldogs first win of 2022 up at the High-Country last weekend. If they can compete for the full quarters, the Bulldogs will ensure they make it a challenge for the visitors. Tip: Echuca.

IF YOU VOTE INDEPENDENT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

UNCOSTED

UNCLEAR

INEFFECTIVE

Independents have ideas, but they haven’t said how much they will cost. Ideas without details are dangerous and can only lead to uncertainty.

It’s not clear where independents stand on important national issues like international relations or economic policy.

Without the support of a party, independents can’t deliver on their promises.

This Federal election, independents in regional Victoria are trading on trust. Does trust really matter? ABC News 30 April 2022

“We see people getting elected on platforms saying, ‘I’m going to keep everyone honest and stand up for what’s right’, [but] it’s very rare you see an independent getting outcomes for themselves or their electorate,” he says.

Australian National University marketing lecturer Andrew Hughes, whose research includes political and non-profit marketing, says trust arguably matters more in regional areas when it comes to politics.

In the northern Victorian town of Lockington, in the Nicholls electorate, dairy farmer Ron Reed... says this alone is not enough for him to trust them [independents] as his representative in Parliament.

“The problem is they dilute the vote for conservatives, and they haven’t got the same clout or party structure to try and get some things done,” he says. “They are very decent people, a lot of them, but they would be better off being the local National Party candidate.”

A vote for an independent is a vote for instability. Authorised by M. Harris, The Nationals, Level 13, 30 Collins St, Melbourne 3000.
