Living angels in the Goulburn Valley By Kelly Carmody PERSONALLY, I have had a challenging experience involving ‘palliative care.’ It was a really difficult time and following the experience, it opened my eyes to the importance of getting around the stigma of death, understanding the need to fulfil a patient's final wishes, and spend the most amount of quality time possible

with that person before they pass or when they pass. Unfortunately, for all varied reasons some terminally ill people facing the end of their life do not always have that same support of having family close by, and sometimes when they do, their family members/carers can need that support just as much. Emerald Bank Market cancelled By Kelly Carmody THE tough decision to cancel the Emerald Bank Market was made this month due to the lack of foot traffic and the inability to attract fresh food vendors, who are the lifeblood of the market. T he outdoor area where the market was held at MOVE is also becoming increasingly more popular for visiting car clubs to the museum, and MOVE also had to consider these events taking precedence. Although the market for now has been cancelled, conversations have been held about establishing a revitalised market in the future, at a new location.

Nationals retain seat of Nicholls “Nationally there was a swing away from the major parties that reflects people’s anger and frustration with the pandemic and that was reflected here where we had a strong independent,” he said, reflecting that Rob’s primary result was higher than he thought. “In the end the result was expected, and we held on pretty well in Shepparton.” “I’m ready to hold the Government to account and my long-term aim is to get the Coalition back into government where we can continue getting things done.” Independent Rob Priestly was a strong runner up, attracting 25.7 percent of the vote, followed by Liberal’s Steve Brooks with 17.9 percent. Despite having come in next best, Rob is sure that the electorate is changing, and that Nicholls will continue to be highly contestable. “I was in it to win it. I’m a little disappointed how close we came, but not close enough,” said Rob who thanked his supporters and offered best wishes to Sam. “I personally met so many fantastic people and that has deepened my respect for the great things that happen in this community.” “I had a great time running. I feel lucky to have run in the Federal election and to have received so much support,” Steve said. “I didn’t appreciate some of the frustrations people had towards the party and I don’t think I was able to transcend that negativity.” “I joined this race because I wanted to make a difference on local issues that affect our community, like the 450g/l, not to comment on broader political issues,” he said. Party politics aside, Steve expressed worry

over how water policy will play out under a Labor Government. There’s no bad blood between the three candidates. After polls closed at 6pm Saturday, Steve invited Rob and Sam to the Terminus Hotel for a beer. “There were some frustrations on the campaign trail but all three of us were standing for the right reasons. We had the same vision but different ways of getting there,” said Steve. “This is such a unique and tough experience that not many people get to be a part of. Running in a country seat, inviting them out for a beer seemed like the right thing to do, and a very country thing to do," he said.

Sharing more than just food By Kelly Carmody NOW more than ever before food support for people in need is in high demand. Reports are indicating that due to the continued pressures of COVID and increased living costs, food relief services are seeing new individuals and families regularly. Some of these people have never needed a hand before. Community organisation Shepparton Foodshare continues to tackle this issue head on, and over the past ten years have provided more than 6.8M meals to people in need. This essential service was recently gifted a piece of land where they are set to start building their forever home/warehouse soon, but to see the project through they are going to need some additional support. Not only does this service provide food to people in need it also prevents quality food going to landfill. The Woolsheds

owner/chef Angela Mangiameli has offered their hospitality once again for the annual Shepparton Foodshare fundraising dinner on July 1. The three-course meal will be made from donated food items. “I am looking forward to the evening and seeing what we can achieve together. It is a wonderful community event where people can get dressed up, enjoy a delicious meal, and hear about all the wonderful things Shepparton Foodshare do.” said Angela. Tickets to ‘Make a Meal in June’ are $100 per person and can be purchased online at www.sheppartonfoodshare.org.au. A substantial portion of ticket sales will be going directly into the much-needed funds for their new warehouse and forever home. If you cannot afford a ticket, donations are always welcome via their website at sheppartonfoodshare.org.au

A tribute to one of Australia’s top sculptors – Paul Smits By Kelly Carmody IF you're strolling through the Queens Gardens in Shepparton, I encourage you to head to the north-western corner and take a moment to appreciate a truly remarkable figurative public sculpture of the great Sir Murray Bourchier. This life-size horse and rider in full charge was created by one of Australia’s most talented sculptors Paul Smits, who spent most of his adult life perfecting it. Some say this piece of work was Paul’s masterpiece–the tragic reality was, it was unfortunately his last. Paul Smits, the self-taught sculptor unexpectedly passed away in February last year at the youthful age of just 34. He left behind a loving wife (Holly) and was only months off becoming a first-time father. Paul's reputation as a fine sculptor received a lot of attention Australia wide. His thoroughness in emulating historical accuracy was important to him and is clearly visible in his sculptures, which are located all over the country. Ten years ago, the Shepparton RSL hatched an idea to find a suitable artist to memorialise the great Sir Murray Bourchier, who was a commander at the Battle of Beersheba in 1917. At this time, Paul was only 23 years old and became the chosen artist. According to mentor, work colleague and friend Ewen

Coates, Paul was described as a “determined perfectionist” who was caring, thoughtful and an extremely hard worker, whose career was really going places. He threw himself straight into the sculpting challenge that was Sir Murray Bourchier before the money was even raised. “Paul was a great mate and co-worker, we had plans to do more work together and I wonder if I will find anyone like him again. He was so talented, eager to learn and pushed himself. A true inspiration and I miss him,” said Ewen. Ewen was also involved in the casting of the bronze sculpture and took on the completion following Paul’s passing. “Working on it was a daily reminder that he was no longer here. I was surprised how emotionally attached I felt when I had to pass it on to the Shepparton City Council when it was completed. It felt like I was losing another part of him. He should have been so incredibly proud of himself; I know I was,” said Ewen. In honour of Paul’s work, there is an Instagram page called ‘Legacy of Paul Smits Sculptor.’ The page truly shows the talent behind the artist and the love that remains by the people he sadly left behind. The sculpture of the great Sir Murray Bourchier shows Murray with a face of fury and wild intent with one hand clasping the reins whilst the other is aiming his feeble pistol into the imagined onslaught of

Living angels in the Goulburn Valley continued from front page

LAST week here in Australia was National Volunteer Week, a celebration to recognise the generous contributions to our country’s volunteers, and I had the pleasure of meeting some of the most empathetic people I have come across in my life. They were palliative care patient volunteers, from Goulburn Valley Hospice. At the beginning of our low-key catchup in the Queens Gardens, it felt like I was in the presence of something higher than life itself. All three of their faces where warm

and friendly and instantly I knew I was surrounded by kind, and soft-hearted souls. Between the three of them (Rob, Marija, and Lynne,) their time within their unique roles all exceeded 20+ years. Their reasons for getting into such giving positions were also similar. They all described a feeling that was like ‘someone calling them’ to reach out and help other people in need, including providing additional care to the loved ones who may be falling apart quietly on the side-lines. Palliative care patient volunteers are like living angels, they are client focused and do not judge a person's situation. They are a

part of a world where life limiting illness, death and grief are managed with respect and compassion. “Sometimes it can be as simple as just sitting with someone and holding their hand, letting them know they are not alone,” said Lynne. “I've been told I make a good coffee, and sometimes I take family members out for a coffee, to just give them some time off, it can be so overwhelming for family to,” said Rob “I enjoy talking with people. Everyone has their own intriguing story, sometimes I think we can be told things that their family may

not have ever heard. We all must celebrate life, no matter the circumstances and the end date,” said Marija. Goulburn Valley Hospice are always looking out for new patient volunteers, so if you think this may be something you would like to give your time to, please reach out to them. TACKLING CULTURAL AWARENESS... The Takeover Shepparton winners presented their big ideas to improve life for young people last Friday, at a launch in Shepparton. Pictured is the Fusion Festival group speaking about cultural awareness. Photo: Kelly Carmody

By Kelly Carmody THERE were more than 150 people in attendance at the ‘Takeover Shepparton Youth Ideas Launch’ last Friday morning, at St Paul’s African House. The chatter in the room was loud, and you could almost feel the energy from the facilitators, presenters, and the young people of Shepparton, as soon as you entered the hall. Takeover Shepparton is an exciting new storytelling and leadership program from the ABC and VicHealth. They have been working with local schools, organisations, and teenagers from all over town, to speak up about what is important to them. Prior to the event on Friday, there where

Those same young adults on Friday, joined forces in groups to confront a panel discussion, on their ‘big ideas’ to improve life for young people in regional Australia. These brave, funny and inspiring youths tackled huge topics such as cultural awareness and improving mental health, and their ideas to the potential solutions, where just as bright. Sock donations needed for the homeless By Kelly Carmody DID you know that socks are one of the least donated, but highest demand items amongst our local homeless community? Think about it, I suppose when most of us throw out socks it’s because they are worn out or have holes in them, so it makes sense that they would not be donated. That although does not help the homeless especially heading into winter, everyone needs to keep their feet warm. St Mel’s Kindergarten in Shepparton last year started a ‘sock drive’ where members of the local community generously donated pairs of ‘brand new’ socks to the centre. From there the centre gave them back to charities such as the ‘Winter Night Shelter’ to pass onto the homeless. This year they are at it again, and on a mission to get the word

St Mel’s Kindergarten early childhood educator, Meghan Dodd expressed the importance on the matter. “There are so many people in need living all around us, we need to support our community and help those who are vulnerable. This is also an important message to teach our children here at the centre, and all children. It’s not hard to be kind to others, and it’s a nice feeling to help others in need,” said Mrs Dodds. May Council Meeting Wrap This month’s Council Meeting was held on Tuesday, 17 May.

Lighting up Victoria Park Lake

Council awarded the tender to install 64 light poles along the walking path around Victoria Park Lake to replace the current lighting which was due for renewal. The lighting installation will improve pedestrian safety in the area and further enhance the amenity of the much loved community precinct.

Our Sporting Future Funding

Council awarded $74,721 in funding as part of the Our Sporting Future Funding program Round Two 2021/2022. Seven local sporting clubs were successful in their funding applications to assist with the implementation of small to medium sized development projects and programs.

ACCIDENT... A car accident Monday night cut power to 960 customers in Shepparton. Photo: Geoff Adams.

Accident causes power outage By Deanne Jeffers JUST before 11pm Monday night a vehicle collided with a power pole, initially causing an outage for 960 customers. Powercor crews responded to a fault in Hawdon Street, Shepparton, where local police say a female probationary driver was heading south on the street when she mounted and straddled the footpath taking out a parking sign and the power pole. She was transmitted to hospital for observation but not admitted.

A spokesperson for Powercor said that network controllers and ground crews were able to switch power back on about 590 customers using other parts of the network, while another 360 customers are currently without power as field crews' complete repairs. Traffic lights were still out on the corner of Nixon and Welsford Streets, where police were controlling traffic after 9am Tuesday. Police are still investigating the incident.

Congratulations to each of the successful applicants.

Mooroopna Recreation Reserve Master Plan

Council adopted the Moooroopna Recreation Reserve Master Plan which provides a strategic plan for future development and management of the sport and recreation facilities. The Master Plan includes 18 development priorities, including new change rooms, new multi-purpose change, toilet and kiosk building, sports stadium upgrade and upgrades to the Max Connors Pavilion.

Community Sustainability Grants Council awarded close to $6,000 in funding for the Community Sustainability Grants.

Congupna Tallygaroopna Landcare Group and Transition Tatura will share in the funding which aims to support the implementation of sustainable projects and events which achieve sustainability actions.

Waterway update

Council is seeking community feedback regarding its intention to enter into a lease with Kids Under Cover for land at 4 Deane Court, Shepparton.

Doctor’s Swamp at Murchison is looking green after a delivery of Environmental Water earlier this month. Also in exciting news for birdwatchers, nine Magpie Geese were recorded at Reedy Swamp in recent weeks. There is only a small population of Magpie Geese in northern Victoria and it is rare to see this many. The birds are plentiful in the Northern Territory and North Queensland and were common Victoria before being hunted to near extinction. It’s been nearly 30 years since magpie geese were spotted in the Shepparton-Mooroopna region, with the last sighting occurring at Gemmil Swamp, Mooroopna, in 1992. The sighting highlights the benefits of citizen science monitoring.

The land will realise the construction of studio accommodation, which will house vulnerable young people at risk of homelessness.

Following the walk, Dunkirk Food Store provided a BBQ with some home made salads for everyone to enjoy a lovely lunch together, and Michael and Amy told The Adviser that everyone stayed around till about 3.30pm. “It was just great to see so many people out and about for such a rare condition. Whether it was peoples' fourth World CDG Awareness Day or their first celebrating with us, it was humbling and inspiring to have everyone there join us for Louis and the CDG community,” said Michael. “I had a few people message me and say it looked like a really fun and loving day, and I really felt that way. RUSHWORTH’S HAVE you ever wondered what may be under the Criterion Hotel in Rushworth? Well, here are some photos of the quite extensive cellar underneath. Rumour has it that it was once used as the morgue, with another well-known rumour being that there may be a tunnel leading off to where the Wigg brewery was over the road, where the IGA is now. There is a bricked-up section where such a tunnel would be, so it would be interesting to move a brick or two to see if this was the case. Check out the 'Lost Rushworth' Facebook page, for more interesting stories just like this.

SPORT FUNDING FOR OUR SPORTS CLUBS...$74,721.00 in total was awarded to seven local sporting clubs to assist with the implementation of small to medium sized development projects and programs. Photo: Kelly Carmody

Adviser

Ladies on Target

Further sports funding granted AS part of the ‘Our Sporting Future Funding’ program Round Two, Greater Sheppar ton Cit y Council noted the awarding of more than $70,000 in funding at Tuesday’s Council Meeting to our region. $74,721.00 in total was awarded to seven local sporting clubs to assist with the implementation of small to medium sized development projects and programs. Now in its 13th year, the program provides five categories for funding, with Round Two seeing funding awarded under the categories of Major Facility Development, Minor Facility Development and Sports Aid. Council did not receive any applications for the Women’s and Girls and Youth Participation categories this round, however funding was awarded under these categories in Round One. The successful applicants in Round Two included a variety of sporting clubs, including calisthenics, football/netball,

rowing, badminton, table tennis and car clubs. Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe said it was fantastic to see a range of sporting clubs represented in this round of funding. “A big congratulations to the seven local sporting clubs who were successful in receiving funding this round. The Our Sporting Future Funding program is extremely popular each year and highlights the importance of local level sporting clubs across the region,” Cr O’Keeffe said. “We hope this funding helps these clubs to establish projects and programs which will benefit their members, volunteers and supporters. “I encourage other local sporting groups to consider applying for the funding next round to help their clubs prosper and grow.” Visit greatershepparton.com.au/oursporting-future for further information on the ‘Our Sporting Future Funding’ program.

BANG... Shooting a distant target with a rifle. Photo: Lauren Jeffers.

By Deanne Jeffers LOCAL ladies had the opportunity to try different types of shooting at a free event at the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia’s (SSAA) Shepparton range. On the day, participants were free to try clay duck shooting with a shotgun and target practice with rifles and handguns. No licence or experience was required,

just the willingness to step out of your comfort zone and try a new skill. For many of the participants, Ladies on Target was their first time shooting a gun and we all found it to be an enjoyable day. A round 70 female shooters participated and were assisted by around 20 volunteers from the SSAA Shepparton Club.
