TAKE CARE... Japanese encephalitis has also been confirmed in piggeries in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia and in a small number of feral pigs in the Northern Territory. Photo: Supplied.
Japanese encephalitis update THERE are a total of 23 properties with pigs confirmed with Japanese encephalitis in Victoria. These are located across the Wangaratta, Moira, Greater Shepparton, Campaspe, Gannawarra, Loddon, Greater Bendigo and northern Grampians local government areas. The detections are the result of national surveillance efforts to identify new cases and determine the extent and spread of the disease and the source of its introduction. Japanese encephalitis has also been confirmed in piggeries in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia and in a small number of feral pigs in the Northern Territory. Agriculture Victoria is working closely with industry providing advice and information to farmers, livestock and horse owners. Infection is not spread directly from pigs to people, and there is no risk to humans from eating pig meat. Only infected mosquitoes can spread infection. Pork is safe to eat.
In general, spread is through the movement of some species of migratory water birds and through the movement of infected mosquitoes, often over long distances. It does not usually spread directly from animal to animal (i.e. it is not considered contagious). Victorians are being reminded to protect themselves from mosquito bites particularly when spending time outdoors.Japanese encephalitis vaccines are recommended for people at a higher risk of exposure to the virus, such as those working with pigs. All people should undertake measures to reduce exposure to mosquitoes. For more information about Japanese encephalitis virus and animals visit Agriculture Victoria’s website: agriculture.vic.gov.au/je For more information about Japanese encephalitis virus and human health contact your GP or phone NURSE-ONCALL on 1300 606 024, or go to www.health.vic.gov.au/je

THE State Government is cutting waste and putting money back in the communities’ pocket with the introduction of a container deposit scheme. Minister for Energy, the Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’A mbrosio, today encouraged Victorians to have their say on the design of the container deposit scheme (CDS) ensuring it is as accessible and easy to use as possible. Set to start in 2023, the CDS will maximise the return of used drink cans, bottles and cartons for recycling and reduce Victoria’s litter by up to half. The CDS will also give Victorian charities, community groups and sports clubs a new and easy way to raise funds. It was supported by 85 percent of participants during initial public consultations. Victorians can now give their views on the plan, which outlines the types of containers accepted in the scheme and a 10 cent refund for returning each container. The consultation also covers the number of refund collection points and their operating hours, so that all Victorians in metropolitan, regional and remote areas can benefit from the scheme. The scheme rewards Victorians with a payment per drink container as an incentive for people to return used containers to maximise recycling. The CDS is part of the Labor Government’s record $515 million investment to delivering a once-in-ageneration change to the state’s waste and recycling system. Consultation is open until Sunday 26 June at: engage.vic.gov.au/container-deposit-scheme.

Extreme ride making the greatest difference "One member lost his wife a few months ago and Hospice Care helped them until they had to say goodbye. Skeeta is about staying connected, but it also allows people to give back to a great cause. In this case, it is very personal and rewarding going on these trips and raising money, it is also an annual catch up for us,” said Mr Palma. As well as raising funds on the journey up the mountains, where the group stayed at the infamous Wonnangatta Station in a remote valley of the Victorian Alps, there is a charity auction to raise funds. “’Skeeta fever’ starts about six weeks before the ride, getting out bikes ready and having the auction. This year we auctioned off wood, which was sold at a higher price, but people don’t mind opening their wallets for an important cause,” said Mr Palma. Over the years, the group has raised almost $40,000 for GV Hospice Care. Participant, Steve Threlfall, who rode with his son Ross Threlfall, says the journey on postie bikes is an “extreme adventure.” “At one point we were riding up this steep hill with the rain torrenting down, and we’re competing with all the elements,”

he said. Kaye Gall, GV Hospice executive manager, says the funds will “make a real difference,” helping to support the future of the palliative care service. “We’re very excited to move into our
new premises in six weeks’ time. This money will support the cause of hospice in purchasing new equipment, supporting our after-hours service, and resources for the new building that will allow us to expand the service,” she said.
Take care near school NEW pedestrian crossing lights on Hawdon Street at Greater Shepparton Secondary College have been activated. Drivers are reminded to take care when driving on Hawdon Street and to obey traffic signals. The lights have been installed in response to a surge in pedestrian activity in the area due to the large number of students attending Greater Shepparton Secondary College. Greater Shepparton City Council’s director infrastructure, Gary Randhawa said the addition of the lights is important to improve safety for pedestrians. “With an increased number of pedestrians in the area, it is important to have these lights operational,” he said. During school hours, the speed limit in the area is 40km/hr. A crossing supervisor will continue to work at the crossing to ensure the safety of pedestrians while motorists adjust to the changed conditions.

STUDENT DECLINE... The number of total enrollments in public schools in Greater Shepparton since converting to a single campus suggests more than 500 students have been lost from government education. Photo: Supplied.
Mooroopna motorists are advised of works
500 students missing THERE are concerns that upward of 500 students have been lost from public education in Shepparton. The My Schools website shows that in 2018, the four former public schools – Wanganui Park Secondary College, Mooroopna Secondary College, McGuire College, and Shepparton High School – had a total student enrolment of 2,645 students. Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, says that since the closure of these schools to create one single campus school, enrolment has steadily declined each year to a reported current enrollment of 2,135 students. Concerned about the number of students who may have been lost to the education system altogether, Ms Lovell says she will raise the dramatic decline with Education Minister, James Merlino in State Parliament seeking an investigation into the issue. “The loss of over 500 students from Greater Shepparton Secondary College
since 2018 is extremely concerning and the Minister needs to investigate where these children have gone,” said Ms Lovell. “It is clear the one school model does not suit all students and the community needs reassurance these young people have not been lost to the education system altogether.” Ms Lovell said the decline in student numbers directly contradicts Mr Merlino’s Shepparton Education Plan document (ref: Shepparton Education Plan 2018 Stage One pg. 11) that predicted student numbers in government secondary schools would reach 3,117 by 2026. She said the Government must investigate the loss of public school students in Greater Shepparton and the reasons for the decline should be publicly reported, saying that Greater Shepparton residents have a right to know where these students are and whether they have been lost to the education system altogether.
TRAFFIC UPDATE... Roadworks on Fairway Drive, Mooroopna will occur until midJune, weather permitting. Photo: Supplied.

NEWS UNMISSABLE PERFORMANCE...Awaken Dance Theatre Company returns to the stage in July for a double-bill show of Bloom and Automatic. Full price tickets are only $35, with child, concession and student prices available. Photo: Supplied.
Dancers to Bloom in new show By Deanne Jeffers AFTER selling out shows during the Shepparton Festival, Awaken Dance Theatre Company returns to the stage for their new production, Automatic, plus a reimagination of Bloom, recently performed at the Woolshed. The troupe of 25 dancers created Bloom – an original contemporary dance performance exploring the concept of rising to reach one’s full potential – in collaboration with The Australian Ballet Education, who have been mentoring the dancers during a threeyear partnership funded by The Fairley Foundation. For the performers and their families, dancing has been life changing, presenting opportunities, and a safe space to express themselves and to reach their potential. “Dancing is an art form. It can be a way to express emotions you wouldn’t be able to just by saying them. The best feeling for me, when dancing, is the freedom and joy that it brings to myself,” said 18-year-old Ada Coonerty, who joined Awaken in 2018. “I may not be the best, but when I dance, it’s my safe place and I feel as if nothing could go wrong,” she said.
Bloom/Automatic is their first double-bill show, where Bloom will be presented in a new theatre setting. For anyone who missed the Shepparton Festival, this immersive experience was originally performed in the round and is a must see. “Watching these beautiful young women express themselves through dance was heart touching,” said parent, Sue Simpson, reflecting on Bloom. “They put their hearts and souls into their performances, just so committed and dedicated.” “You will see an amazing bunch of talented kids who are committed to the team environment and work together so well. It is obvious that they all love what they do because it comes out in their performance,” said parent, Bek Moulder. “The highlight for me would be the music, visual effects, lighting and animation combined with choreography to tell the story of the piece.” The double-bill show will have two performances on Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2, at Riverlinks Westside. Tickets are on sale now via Riverlinks. Phone 5832 9511 or go to www.riverlinks.com.au

Huge turnout for Men’s Shed gathering A ROU N D 8 0 m e mb er s f rom n i ne Men’s Sheds in the Goulburn Valley came together in last month for their annual gathering. On the day there were demonstrations at the Mooroopna Men’s Shed, followed by lunch and speeches at the Sir Ian McLennan Centre, Mooroopna. Representatives from the Australian Men’s Shed and from the Council attended the lunch, which coincided with National Volunteer Week, Australia's largest annual celebration of volunteering held on May 16 – 22. “We are so grateful to all of you in this room who do some form of volunteering,” said Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe. “There are so many stories of amazing volunteers that just help because they want to, and I think it’s an incredible thing. We’re so grateful to live in such a giving community,” she said. She thanked the members for their incredible work and extended Council’s support for the continued prosperity of local Men’s Sheds. Men can be reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they don’t always ask for help. Likely due to this, many men are less healthy than women, drink more, take more risks and suffer more from isolation, loneliness and depression. The Men’s Sheds movement is a powerful tool in addressing men’s health

and wellbeing. Australia wide, there are more Sheds than McDonald’s restaurants, and no two Sheds are the same. “I love the Men’s Sheds. It’s not only a place where we actually provide work for our community, but it’s a great place to bond and an opportunity to get together and talk about these issues and some of the issues that do affect us in our community,” said Cr Greg James. Take care on Mayor resigns roads this long weekend MOTORISTS are being reminded to slow down, take care, and ensure they and their vehicle are prepared if travelling over the Queen’s birthday long weekend. From 12am Friday, June 10, to 11.59am Monday, June 13, police and highway patrol units will be combining for a statewide operation called Operation Regal. "There will be more random checks and people can expect to see more pre-liminary testing than usual, especially in the regions,” said Acting Senior Sergeant Tom Brown. In his highway patrol unit, officers have responded to 11 deaths that could have been avoided. The message police want to get across is to be safe and take care on roads this long weekend. “If you’re travelling this weekend, make sure your vehicle is safe and prepared, and that you feel well rested. We attend too many head-on collisions that didn’t need to happen,” Tom said. “We find long weekends are high risk periods on our roads, and winter weather can make conditions more dangerous.” Police will have a major presence on major artillery roads around the state, and targeting the snowfields, checking for speed, impaired driving, distracted driving, and fatigue. “If you’re driving this weekend, be fully prepared to be tested for drugs and alcohol.”
KIM O’Keeffe has resigned from her position as mayor for Greater Shepparton City Council, effective from 11pm yesterday, June 6, and she will take a leave of absence. Cr O’Keeffe was in her fourth term as mayor, having previously served in 2018, 2019, and 2021. She will run in the state election as the candidate for the Nationals party after being endorsed by the party last month. Councillors will elect a new mayor at an additional council meeting at 5.30pm on June 9. Cr O’Keeffe will apply for a leave of absence at the additional meeting, with Cr Anthony Brophy to remain as deputy mayor unless elected as the new mayor. If Cr Brophy is elected, a new deputy will be decided at a future meeting. In tendering her resignation, Cr O’Keeffe said she was incredibly appreciative of the opportunity to be mayor. “I would like to thank my colleagues past and present for giving me the support to represent Council to our community. I have not done this alone, it takes a team of councillors and I have enjoyed working with all of them.” “It’s a role I have thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciate the support from the community and the chance to be involved in so many important local events, strategic developments and initiatives.” Last month, Cr O’Keeffe’s state election candidacy got resounding support at the 2022 Nationals State Conference in Shepparton, which was attended by hundreds of grassroots members, and Federal and State Nationals MPs. Cr O’Keeffe said the current government’s city-centric agenda constantly overlooked Shepparton, which was why she had decided to run for The Nationals’ team. “Like all local people I’ve been frustrated to see key local projects, like future stages of the GV Health upgrade or better local roads, constantly overlooked in the past few State Budgets,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“The Shepparton region has so much potential to thrive with a strong local representative in Victorian Parliament to build on Sam Birrell’s strong advocacy at the Federal level. “I believe the best way to do that is as part of a team of Nationals MPs who are dedicated to secure a fair share for all regional Victorians. “On my priority list for the Shepparton electorate are delivering future stages at GV Health, certainty that our communities will never again be put into lockdown and securing more investment in maintaining local roads with a return of the Country Roads and Bridges Program.”

Increasing the understanding of palliative care By Kelly Carmody EVERY year held from May 22 – 28 is one of Australia’s largest annual awareness-raising events, National Palliative Care Week (NPCW). T he event is held to increase the understanding of the many benefits of palliative care. This year our local palliative care team that supports the Goulburn Valley region, ‘GV Hospice’ raised their awareness by providing a free and welcoming breakfast in the front yard of the organisation's premises. Annie Jorgensen, who is a clinical care nurse for the organisation also manages the care that is provided to the many clients the organisation
offers their free services to. She articulated about how important it is to also celebrate the people that support the organisation. “There are so many people, companies, volunteers, and community organisations that support our services in so many ways. Without them we would not be able to offer the services we do,” said Annie. “It has been a lovely morning shared by all,” she added. GV Hospice staff truly see the people not just the illness and provide unique personal connections with their clients, that helps maintain the quality of life for someone in their own home.

Streetscapes capturing the hearts of locals

DURING the depths of Covid lockdowns, a period where many of us found unexpected time to pause, reflect and look inwardly, a local woman picked up a paintbrush for the first time and as the saying goes, the rest is history. Deb De Luca has captured the hearts and eyes of the Kyabram community with her series of sketches, ‘Kyabram Streetscapes’. Depicting everyday scenes keenly observed by Deb on her travels around town, each weekly instalment is posted to Facebook and Instagram. While the drawings do not feature the faces of the people drawn by Deb, many have recognised themselves or people they know by spotting their clothing, hairstyle or remembering being there at the time and place the illustrations detail.
Whether you need private office space, an interview room, a boardroom, a training room or a room to see a client...
“It’s so lovely when someone comments below a drawing, “that’s me!”, it’s wonderful to have such a strong connection to the Kyabram community and it brings me so much joy. It’s so nice when people say they look out for my next drawing, and that they have spotted the little hidden eyes that feature in my illustrative work,” said Deb. Deb has found solace in art and has a newfound appreciation of how creative outlets can be such a positive force in people’s lives. “Drawing and painting is deeply therapeutic. The ability to express myself through art and create beautiful things has helped me focus on something creative and enjoyable through the last couple of years.” As for where Deb produces her work, she laughs as she tells me her favourite place to paint is the kitchen bench. “I do have an easel, on which rests a still-life

Brumbies found dead in Barmah
SHAME... One of several deceased brumbies found covered with branches at Barmah on May 31. Anyone opposed to this management should meet activists at Parliament today at 1pm to oppose these actions. Photo: Murray Willaton.
Contributed by Murray Willaton WHAT a deceitful, sneaky organisation are Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning under the control of Lily D’Ambrosio? T he Barmah Brumby Preser vation Group put together a small six person search party on Wednesday, May 31, and found another 21 brumbies shot and then pathetically covered over with branches and sticks. We searched about 4,000 acres on foot in the sleet and wind. Imagine how many more have been shot in the whole 77,000 acres of the Barmah National Park. These authorities tell our group in meetings that they are going to start trapping in late April. So, we need to be
ready to start accepting these horses. While we are at the sanctuary doing preparations to accept large numbers of brumbies, acting in ‘good faith’, those low lives are sneaking around the bush shooting. No wonder they only trapped for a week and left. Why are they shooting these heritage brumbies when a ‘World class sanctuary is waiting for them just down the road.’ Shooting them and covering them with sticks and leaving them as wild pig food in a National Park is disgusting. It is bewildering how Ministers and high-level government managers could think of doing this. Did you really think that using sticks would cover up this behaviour?

OPINION
Letters to the Editor GAS GAME CHANGER
To the Editor, All kudos to the Greater Shepparton City Council for being one of the 31 Victorian local governments calling on our state government for planning laws to be amended to allow them to ban gas on new developments. Burning gas produces 16 percent of Victoria’s total emissions and home use accounts for two-thirds of those. In addition, bright sparks are getting off the gas in droves. This means the rapidly rising cost of gas, and gas infrastructure will fall to those who either choose to burn, or like renters, may have no choice. Not good for the environment nor equity. As we race to a safer, decarbonised world, supporting gas use and gas infrastructure is no longer a defendable nor ethical choice. Yours sincerely, Karen Campbell Geelong, VIC

POLITICS FAILING STUDENTS To the Editor, Suzanna Sheed is right, politics is hurting students (Shepparton News, Friday, 27th May), unfortunately, her only stated concern is for
the students at Greater Shepparton Secondary College. Here’s how politics is hurting our students. By simply existing in a place inconvenient to developers, we have been made invisible by our local council and their consultants. Following decades of shocking neglect of the needs of the homeless by successive state governments, the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build arrived with much hope and promise. However, I feel the Big Build process is not democratic and gives great power to developers over communities or even a small school for vulnerable students. Our students are fighting to save their school from a four storey development on the carparks adjoining the school that would loom over the school, block most of our sunlight and severely effect the rights that students have for privacy and safety. Can you imagine the impact on our students’ mental health and wellbeing by being completely overshadowed and overlooked in their only outdoor classroom and play ground? Or the noise and dust from a huge building project next door that would make teaching and learning untenable? Or of their school being potentially unable to meet registration requirements and being forced to close? This is what politics will potentially do here. Despite a request for her support on 20th January, Suzanna Sheed doesn’t seem to have any concern for our students and has not visited our school. Several politicians have visited our school to meet students and see for themselves the

We appreciate their interest in obtaining facts and asking pertinent questions in parliament. Wendy Lovell was one of those politicians. Wendy understands that all students need to have choice in education as well as a safe, secure and positive learning environment. Our school provides that to 104 children and young people. Suzanna Sheed also mentions student aspirations as a reason to put young people first. Our students, many of whom have high learning needs, simply aspire to complete their education at the school they call their own. Our students are proud of their brand new school and deserve to be supported too. Yours sincerely, Bronwyn Rose Principal Shepparton ACE Secondary College
DOCUMENTS KEPT SECRET Dear Editor, Daniel Andrews is again spending Victorian taxpayer dollars fighting against an order to hand over documents that question the integrity and conduct of the Labor Government. Information Commissioner Sven Bluemmel has ordered the Premier’s personal office to release documents detailing secret COVID19 surveys that monitored public reaction to Labor’s lockdowns in 2020, at the height of the pandemic. Among other things, the survey – conducted by QDOS Research, a polling company led by Labor strategist John Armitage – asked
Victorians to give the Premier and his leadership a score out of ten. True to form, Labor is fighting the order with a last minute, taxpayer-funded bid to keep these documents secret. It’s the latest in a long line of attacks the Andrews Labor Government has launched against transparency and accountability. Under Daniel Andrews, Victoria’s anticorruption and integrity bodies, including the IBAC, the Victorian Ombudsman and the Parliamentary Budget Office, are being starved of funds and resources. Last month, Labor MPs blocked a move to immediately provide $10M for the IBAC and $2M for the Victorian Ombudsman – a policy already committed by The Nationals. Concerningly, Labor’s funding squeeze comes as the Premier and his Government Ministers are subject to multiple corruption investigations by the IBAC and the Ombudsman. Victoria’s integrity agencies should be strengthened, supported and resourced to prevent corruption in public office. But Daniel Andrews is stopping at nothing to keep the truth hidden from Victorians. Peter Walsh Leader of The Nationals Member for Murray Plains Want to have your say? ADOPTION fees on cats and kittens have again been reduced due to the large number of abandoned animals in need of a home currently at the Animal Shelter. Greater Shepparton City Council have reduced fees on cats over 12 months to $20, and kittens to only $50, a price drop from $100 for both cats and kittens. There are currently 50 cats ready to go to their new home. “Our Shelter staff care deeply about all the animals in their care and want nothing more than to see these loveable cats and kittens go to good homes,” said Council’s director sustainable development, Geraldine Christou. A ll cats a re de- sexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for worms and fleas, and vet checked, so new owners do not have to do anything except show their new pets lots of love. All pets are registered at the time of adoption. “Over the last few months there has been an influx of animals at shelters around the state. The increase in abandoned cats and
kittens is not unique to Greater Shepparton, however, our facility has limited space and we are looking for new forever homes for them.” “The Shelter has experienced pregnant cats, cats with litters and kittens being surrendered. Cats can breed at a very young age which is why it is important to have them de-sexed when old enough.” “Adopting an animal from the Animal Shelter is a rewarding experience for both our community and animals,” said Ms Christou. “Our staff are working hard to find the right home for each animal and want to ensure every new home is long lasting and the right fit.” Residents can visit the Shepparton Animal Shelter on Wanganui Road by appointment to meet the animals available for adoption and to make an application. Let us imagine... SAFETY FIRST...The Queen’s Birthday weekend can be a dangerous time on our roads. Days are shorter, roads can be slippery, and conditions more likely to be hazardous. RoadSafe Goulburn Valley have some tips for staying safe this long weekend. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.
IT’S the Queen’s Birthday holiday time, and you are all packed up and prepared for your long-awaited trip to visit family or enjoy some relaxation in the nearby snowfields. The winter days are shorter, roads can be wetter and driving conditions can be quite hazardous. Post-COVID, many of us are only now finding ourselves taking long car trips after constant lockdowns rendered us unable to do so. We may have also noticed the driving skills of our loved ones and even ourselves have diminished after such an extended period of adhering to stay-at-home orders. Some questions to consider prior to leaving are, am I well rested, well hydrated, and is the car in tip top condition? Whilst driving please reduce the causes of distractions such as mobile phones, navigation aids and entertainment systems. Fatigue and speed are two of the greatest contributors to road trauma. Please take regular breaks, stopping at least every two hours and do not drive when you would normally be sleeping. Be aware that reduced speed zones are in place at dangerous intersections. In country areas farmers and
contractors often need to move stock and oversize farm equipment. Be patient when passing and moving through animal herds. Wildlife hazards including deer, kangaroos, wallabies, and wombats are abundant on country roads. They are most active during dawn and dusk. Colliding with any of these animals can cause severe damage and/or injury. Enlist any passengers to be on the lookout for hazards. A road crash will change your life forever and that of many others. Stop the car, rest up, let your people know you are safe and continue driving with a clear mind. The ripple effect after a collision touch all involved, family, friends, first responders and our health workers – so many. If you are driving long distances, take rest breaks and do not speed. Currently, there is already a 9.4 percent increase on last year’s lives lost tally, with the rural Victorian statistics faring worse than that of metropolitan Melbourne. Do your part this holiday period to avoid contributing to the huge ripple effect that trauma road incidents bring. We hope that these tips are of assistance, arrive safely and enjoy your well-deserved break.

Entries are now open for Victorian students in three categories: Years 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Students enter by submitting a 90-second video of themselves presenting a Member’s Statement that they would make if they were a Member of Parliament. A Member’s Statement is an opportunity for MPs to make a brief statement of no more than 90 seconds on matters they wish to bring to the attention of Parliament that are of interest or concern to them and the people of their electorate. Steph Ryan, Member for Euroa and Nationals’ deputy leader said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get a taste of what it’s like to take the concerns of their community to State Parliament.” “I regularly speak to students from our local schools so I know there are a lot of students who would perform brilliantly at such a task.” Judges w ill look for ent ries t hat d e m o n s t r at e a c l e a rly a r t i c u l at e d message, interesting insights, ideas and/ or perspectives and a clear understanding of why this issue or idea matters. THE official program for the inaugural White Night Shepparton has been officially launched by Visit Victoria. White Night will shine a light on Shepparton for the very first time on Saturday, June 25, through spectacular works created by local artists, alongside national and internationally renowned works. The full program will see sparkling lasers and light beams, stunning projections, mesmerizing music, and captivating installations will transform the Victoria Park Lake precinct and surrounding areas into an illuminated wonderland. Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said this was an event not to be missed. “Hosting White Night is an incredible experience for our region, as this will not be like anything they have put together before. Unique to our region’s environment and community, the program showcases works focused on Indigenous culture, multiculturalism and native animals, flora, and fauna,” Cr O’Keeffe said. “The program incorporates distinctive features of Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley including the new Shepparton Art Museum, Victoria Park Lake, Aquamoves, Monash Park and the streetscape of Welsford Street presenting a truly unique experience for
locals and visitors.” White Night is expected to draw upwards of 30,000 visitors, which is expected to deliver a $3M boost to the local economy. “We are working closely with local businesses, community organisations and artists to make sure this event is a success.” “I encourage the community and visitors to embrace the White Night celebration so you can stay all night and play all weekend. If you haven’t already started planning your trip, book your accommodation, check out the menus from our cafes and restaurants and visit one of our unique attractions.” Local businesses are encouraged to contact Council’s Visitor Economy team to discuss how to leverage this event to maximise the visitor experience and expenditure across the region’s businesses for the weekend. Register your special offers and trading hours for the weekend and have them listed on Visit Shepparton. For further business discussions email info@visitshepparton.com.au or phone 5832 9330. For White Night information and updates follow Visit Shepparton social media pages for regular updates and local recommendations for your White Night journey. Mooroopna faces a massive challenge to avoid a third loss in the past month when it travels to the Port of Echuca to take on the top of the ladder Murray Bombers. The Cats have lost its past two home matches in between a comfortable win at Benalla before the bye. Liam Betson, Ben Hicks, Christopher Nield (six goals), Rising Star nominee Jed Woods and Dom Gugliotti will be out to lead by example for the visitors. Echuca was locked in an first half arm wrestle with its neighbouring rival Rochester last weekend. It was able to kick away in the second half and that was largely due to the efforts of Sam Willoughby, Kane Morris, Benjamin Reid, Jack McHale and Aiden Mills. If the Murray Bombers get the game played on their terms, then they should be able to keep the Cats to a losing score. Tip: Echuca.

Shepparton will be looking to challenge itself against one of the powerhouse teams of the past decade today. The Bears started off the game well against Seymour last weekend, but then could not sustain its form through the middle part of the game. Today, coach Edward Lindon, Rhiley Lau, Rowan Hiscock, Mitchell Brett and Jayden Dhosi will be doing their best for a very young Bears outfit. If the young Bears allow the likes of Kaine Herbert, Zachary Norris, Anthony DePasquale, Lachlan Smith, Nic Denahy and Zac Keogh to get on top then they could be in for a tough day at the home of football. Tip: Kyabram.
of the opponents they have managed to skip past in the past couple of weeks. Jack Murphy, Nathan Beattie, Seamus Feery, Ben Rigoni and Dylan Scopel led the way for the Lions as they took control of the game in the second half against the Bears last weekend. The Tigers were right in the contest against Echuca until half-time, so coach Steven Stroobants knows only a four-quarter effort will be good enough to get the points over the Lions. Adam McPhee, Grant Fuller, Mitchell Bright, Andy Henderson and Izaac Johnson will be important for the Tigers. If they can continue their good form and ensure enough supply to the Tiger forwards then they can win a tight one. Tip: Rochester.
BENALLA VS. SHEPPARTON SWANS Shepparton Swans will get an opportunity to make it two wins on the bounce when it takes on the winless Benalla today. The Swans were outstanding in getting the win over Tatura. Benalla found it tough against Euroa. They will look to ruckman Joshua Marchbank, Will O’Donoghue, Jake Pallpratt, Michael Rheese, Jordan Wolff and coach Will Martiniello to led the way. BJ Squire, Andrew Riordan, Quade Johnstone will be important for the visitors and if the Swans can get the continued growth from the kids, then they should make it win number 3 in season 2022. Tip: Shepparton Swans.
MANSFIELD VS. EUROA
This is probably the match of the round. Mansfield is 7-1, having only lost to premiership favourite Shepparton United and Tatura will be gunning for Echuca while Euroa has recovered from its backA ROUND 12 SELECTIONS to start the s season to be 6-2, their second win of the season when they go in to-back defeats ROUND 12 SELECTIONS • C a k e • 6 W. GVL netball preview round 9 By Sam Saracino
ECHUCA Vs. MOOROOPNA
This promises to be a cracking game of netball between two teams who are well in the mix for this year’s premiership. Both come into the contest off the back of victories last weekend – Echuca had a fought win over arch rival Rochester while Mooroopna was too strong for Mansfield, taking home a 59-13 win. Danya Williams, Shelby Britten and Elle Brooks all performed well, with the convincing win keeping the Cats in the top four and they will be eager to retain some breathing space on the sixth placed Shepparton. The Murray Bombers will look to Jac James in defensive third to set up some attack and to do that she will need the support of mid-courter and coach Steph Vick. If those can have influence on the contest that should provide the supply to Greta Pearson and Bianca Willis to put together a winning score. Tip: Echuca.
SHEPPARTON Vs. KYABRAM
This is a big game for Shepparton as it looks to stay inside the top six. Kyabram was outplayed by a well drilled Shepparton United last weekend. Seymour did likewise to Shepparton, winning comfortably after a strong start to the contest. Coach Tracey Brereton knows the importance of a good start to ensure the visitors don’t get any advantage. For the Bears, Ashlee Cann, Caitlin Hill and Abigail Rowe stood out in last weekend’s loss and they will be important if the home team is to get the points today. Tip: Shepparton.
TATURA Vs. SHEPPARTON UNITED
Tatura is yet to recapture the form which lifted it to sixth placed when the season ended last year. The season started with a loss and unfortunately, they haven’t been able to recover. And, it doesn’t get any easier today when up against Shepparton United. The Demons currently sit at 6-2 and coach Kara Blizzard will be reminding her girls to stay on task today from the first whistle. For mine, the Dees are a well-balanced unit and it will be the depth of their squad that sees them past the home team. Tip: Shepparton United.

ROCHESTER Vs. SEYMOUR
Rochester faces a massive challenge when it welcomes the red hot and ladder leading Seymour. The Tigers gave as good as they got last weekend against Echuca, going down by seven goals. The Lions were ruthless in pushing past Shepparton. They jumped out of the blocks and that’s what set up the big win. If Casey Adamson and Nakita Singe are allowed to control the tempo and play then coach Ellie O’Sullivan and Jess Lallo will ensure the visitors walk away with the points. Tip: Seymour.
BENALLA Vs. SHEPPARTON SWANS
Shepparton Swans is chasing a fifth straight win when it makes the trip to Benalla today. After starting the season with four consecutive losses, coach Cou r t ney Simpson would be thrilled with how her girls have responded during the past month. She knows that Benalla will be no pushover, especially on its home court and if the likes of Kellie Keen, Chloe Hill and Sally Washfold are allowed to continue their good form. That said, the Swans will be looking to take the form in which helped them overcome Tatura last weekend. If Klarindah Hudson, Shinea Sali and Sophie Atkinson are allowed to set the tone and help the visitors jump out of the blocks, then they should make it five wins on the bounce. Tip: Shepparton Swans.
MANSFIELD Vs. EUROA
Euroa will be out to consolidate its place inside the top six when it takes on the winless Mansfield. The Magpies were strong across the four quarters last weekend to defeat Benalla by 26 goals. This will no doubt give the team plenty of confidence going into today. Bree Poole and Karly Wappet were superb in goals and Bridget Hill was dom i na nt i n defence as was Tyler Marchbank with some strong intercepts. If they can continue that form and keep the likes of Isabelle Riley, Dempsey Parsons and shooter Ellie Kipping at bay, then the visitors should claim the win. Tip: Euroa.
