Mayor elected SHANE Sali was elected to be the new mayor of the City of Greater Shepparton on Thursday. This will be Cr Sali’s first time serving as mayor since being elected to the Council in 2020. He will serve as mayor for the remaining period of the current term alongside deputy mayor, Cr Anthony Brophy. In Cr Sali’s mayoral address following the election, he said he was excited for the next steps as mayor and continuing to strengthen Greater Shepparton’s stance as a dynamic and prosperous regional city. “I look forward to working hard together to deliver the important things that matter most for our region,” he said. “We should be very proud of where we are, we are the benchmark. Shepparton must continue to lead the way. “I look forward to taking Greater Shepparton to greater heights. I will continue to work hard for the things that matter most and to position Greater Shepparton as the ultimate destination.” Cr Sali was elected at an additional
Council meeting, which was called following Cr Kim O’Keeffe resigning her position as mayor on Monday, June 6. Cr O’Keeffe has applied for a Leave of Absence, which came into effect at 5pm on Friday, June 10 and will continue until the results of the upcoming state election have been declared.
Victoria Park Lake to light up AT the May Council meeting, Greater Shepparton City Council awarded the tender to replace pedestrian lighting around Victoria Park Lake. The tender, awarded to local company, Byers Electrical, will see 64 new light poles installed adjacent to the walking path around the lake. The upgrades will replace the lighting currently in place, which has come to the end of its asset life and needs to be renewed to improve pedestrian safety at dusk and dawn. Works will commence in coming weeks with expected completion towards the end of July, weather permitting. Measures will be put in place to minimise the disruption to residents and visitors during this time. Outgoing mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe said Council were
pleased to award this important contract to a local company. “The installation of this new lighting will improve the already fantastic Victoria Park Lake precinct and ensure residents and visitors feel safe when visiting the area,” she said. “We see people utilising the walking track during the early hours of the morning and evening each day and this lighting renewal will ensure these residents and visitors feel safe when doing so. “Victoria Park Lake is an ideal location for many community events and activities and this upgraded lighting will allow for continued usage of the area for years to come.” Power facility upgrades are also currently being undertaken at the Victoria Park Lake events area, which will further improve the amenities in the space for upcoming events.

AG INNOVATION... Ripe Robotics co-founders Leopold Lucas and Hunter Jay, lead engineer Michael Wood and mechatronics engineer Tobin Smit with Eve Mk5 in the centre, on the day of the successful trial run. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.
By Deanne Jeffers THE first trials for the fruit picking robot being developed by Ripe Robotics out of McNab and Son’s orchards in Ardmona were successful. Since receiving Federal funding earlier this year, Eve has u ndergone total redevelopment. Eve Mk5 is the fifth version developed by the company and it has been designed to pick fruit four times faster than Ripe Robotics' earlier designs, requires less maintenance, can pick a wider range of fruit, and uses less power – a key part in making these robots commercially viable. This machine not only alleviates the impact of labour shortages, but co-founder Hunter Jay says that AI-technology aids data collection by photographing each apple before being picked. This means orchardists will have access to accurate data that records the yield and quality of produce being collected each year.
The advent of this new technology will see orchards change to reflect the advancements. On the right side of the orchard photographed, you will see fruit trees have been pruned to have long, vertical limbs that offer easy access for the robot to grasp with its small suction ‘hand.’ Powered with petrol generators, the robot can move through the orchard collecting fruit ready for picking, records the fruit, picks it and then it is moved to a bin. Eve Mk5 has been designed with versatility in mind, being able to pick more than just apples, have additional arms added, and the Ripe Robotics team are constantly working to make Eve more efficient. Next month Eve will be put to the test picking oranges, and the next major milestone for the project will be picking an entire bin of fruit. Sheed airs concerns about democracy in the Victorian Government DEMOCRACY is the hallmark of good and free Government and while Australia is one of the most democratic countries in the world, there are still instances that can be improved. In the Victorian Parliament, Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed , st rong ly advocated for more democratic processes in the Victorian Parliament during question time, following a question directed to her by Independent Member for Mildura, Ali Cupper. I n wh at wa s a ver y ra re u s e of parliamentary procedure, Ms Cupper used her question to ask why there was a need to debate Ms Sheed’s notice of motion, which seeks to make provision for a nonGovernment business program. Ms Sheed has been raising the need for the independents and opposition members to be allowed to have their own business
program for several years. Victoria is the only parliament in Australia where there is no non-government business program in the lower house. After question time, Ms Sheed spoke about how important it was for independent members to work together to achieve democracy in the Victorian Government. “Independents are on the march,” Ms Sheed said. “Just look at the outcomes of the Federal election – people are realising that independents are working with and for the community and can make serious changes in parliament. “ I w i l l no t b e s i l e nt ab o u t t h e reintroduction of non-government business in the Victorian Parliament. “The Government should pay attention to this request for basic democrac y because they may see more independents
on the crossbench following the November election, who will unite to have their voices heard. “We all need the opportunity to bring on motions and private members bills and debate them in detail rather than be afforded such limited opportunity to have our say. “I hope the Victorian Government will hear our calls and introduce nongovernment before the 59th Parliament term ends.” How the government responds remains to be seen. IN the 1890s a beautifully crafted Elizabethan style brick building was erected to house the Kyabram post and telegraph office. This ornate structure is still a landmark in Kyabram, the exterior and interior still highlight many original features. Today it is the home of Café Three620, a name befitting the building as 3620 is Kyabram’s postcode. Current owners Andrew and Rachelle Robertson purchased the business in 2018 and run it with the help of son Xavier and daughter Ashleigh. Andrew a qualified chef said, “We always try to create a great family atmosphere for our customers, we are more restaurant rather than café, but people can still drop in just for coffee unlike other restaurants. We are fully licensed with an Al la carte menu. I would describe our cuisine as modern Australian with a Mediterranean twist.”
The restaurant can seat up to 113 and has a lovely private marquee area at the rear of the building. Café three620 is available for small and large functions, large private functions can be arranged. Open for coffee, brunch and lunch Tuesday 9.30am-2.30pm, coffee, brunch, lunch Wednesday to Friday 9.30am-2.30pm, dinner 5.30pm to late, Saturday dinner only, 5.30pm to late. Coffee, brunch, lunch Sunday 10.00am-2.30pm, dinner 5.30pm to late. Andrew, Rachelle, Xavier and Ashleigh look forward to welcoming you to Café three620. More than just tyres FROM 24-hour roadside assistance services, to 4WD and camping accessories, parts, and fitment, to onsite repairs to stock lists of leading brands of passenger, 4-wheel drive and light commercial tyres, Solar City Tyres/Bridgestone Service Centre is certainly more than just a tyre shop. So, if you thought they were just a tyre store, you have it very wrong. Solar City Tyres/Bridgestone Service Centre manager Troy Prosser said there is nothing the company cannot do. “From mechanical repairs and maintenance of all passenger and 4x4 vehicles, to battery testing and replacement. Brakes, suspension, air con re gasing and repairs and wheel alignments. We also have a four-bay drive through b-double undercover truck centre for all light truck, truck, ag, and industrial tyre fitment requirements,” said Troy. “There are two fully equipped mobile onsite service cranes

RUSHWORTH’S
WW2 POW camp huts still alive today T H E R E are some lit tle-k now n historical treasures amongst our midst right here in our local region. In 1976 a parcel of land on Sayers Lane in Rushworth, approximately 320 acres in size, was subdivided into a series of 45 to 50 acre lots. As part of this subdivision application, it was required that a dam and shed be put on each subdivided block. The dams were made but the sheds were not built as such. Instead, WW2 huts left over from the prisoner of war (POW) camp in Murchison, were transported to the site and one placed on each block. To this day some of these huts still exist on these properties although some have been modified. One in particular however is very much still in its original condition and is a great example of the prisoner’s quarters in the POW camp. Another still has its original hut number on it. All information for this story was provided by the Facebook page, Lost Rushworth.

LIBERAL MEMBER FOR NORTHERN VICTORIA REGION
LIBERAL’S 25% REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE GUARANTEE
The Liberal Party have announced that an elected Matthew Guy Coalition Government will commit to a 25% Regional Infrastructure Guarantee, which means regional Victoria will finally get its fair share of infrastructure funding for important local projects.
TSE a part of the multimillion-dollar upgrades at Plunkett’s Orchards
The policy means that in the first term of a Liberal Coalition Government, at least 25% of all new Government capital investment will to go to regional communities. This is in stark contrast to the Andrews Labor Government who allocated less than 13% of capital spending in the 2022-23 State Budget to regional Victoria and only 11.4% allocated in the 2021-22 State Budget for major state asset investment. The 25% Regional Infrastructure Guarantee could be used to fund critical infrastructure projects in the Shepparton District like Stage 1 of the Shepparton Bypass project, the completion of the GV Health redevelopment and Stage 1 of the Shepparton Sports Stadium redevelopment.
LABOR REFUSES TO PROVIDE ANSWERS ON GSSC STUDENT EXODUS In State Parliament last week, I asked Education Minister James Merlino to explain the loss of more than 500 students from public secondary education in Shepparton since the closure of the four public secondary schools and the creation of the Greater Shepparton Secondary College. The My Schools website revealed that in 2018 the four previous public secondary schools, Wanganui Park Secondary College, Mooroopna Secondary College, McGuire College, and Shepparton High School, had a total student enrolment of 2645 students.
The college has reportedly lost thirty-one students since the start of March this year, indicating that the lack of choice imposed by the Andrews Labor Government and Suzanna Sheed continues to impact Greater Shepparton families. The Government must investigate the loss of over 500 students from Public Education in Greater Shepparton and the reasons for the decline should be publicly reported.
LABOR’S CRUEL BRUMBY CULL PLANS EXPOSED I have been tireless in the work to stop the Andrews Labor Government’s plans to shoot the iconic Barmah Brumby into extinction and I am happy that an elected Matthew Guy Coalition Government will immediately cease the shooting of brumbies in both the Barmah and Alpine national parks. Parks Victoria had previously reached an agreement with the local Barmah Brumby Preservation Group to trap horses for placement in a brumby sanctuary or rehoming, but we now find that the culling has commenced in secret, with shooters hiding carcasses of dead horses under bushes. Our policy will involve: • The end of Labor’s cruel plan of eradicating brumbies through aerial and ground shooting, • A thorough and more accurate assessment of the brumby population, • Population management methods that focus on rehoming and veterinary intervention; and, • Liaison with New South Wales to coordinate efforts across state borders. • The brumbies in Barmah need to be controlled humanely and I am pleased the Liberal’s plan will do this.

We will continue to work on trouble shooting issues and maintenance at the orchard for now and continue to provide our services to the local commercial, industrial and residential industries,” he added. Doing good things through beers
EXCLUSIVE BRANDS... The Brewmanity co-founder and former AFL star David Neitz was at The Bottle-O Warehouse in Shepparton last week promoting his beer company, Brewmanity. Photo: Kelly Carmody
AFL Football royalty David Neitz was in Shepparton last week to promote his beer company ‘Brewmanity’ which is an exclusive brand to The Bottle-O Warehouse and all independent banner groups. The Brewmanity co-founder and former AFL star said ‘The Mouth of the South’ is brewed in an old school way, with a portion of all sales being donated to the much need cause, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) after the diagnosis of Neitz’s long time coach, Neale Daniher. “We champion good beer, celebrate the good things in life, and give back by making a donation to fight MND with every beer sold. With your support, we hope to pour out the goodness for years to come,” said David. What started with a group of beer loving mates and a dream to start their own brewery, has turned into a company where every good
beer holds a little bit of good, with good people, while doing a good dead. The Bottle-O Warehouse store manager Jacque Wayman said that having exclusive brands like Brewmanity and the many others they stock, sets them aside from other liquor companies. “It has been a pleasure to have David here today promoting his company. The locals have loved meeting him and tasting his draught beer,” said Jacque. Exclusive brands that are stocked within The Bottle-O Warehouse can come from all over the world, each with their own unique story. This one, however, is about a good beer brand, that does good things through beer. It is brewed right here in Victoria and sold locally in Shepparton at The Bottle-O Warehouse. As the brand states, “get it in your mouth” and help make a change for MND.

More support available for health care workers W I T H Victoria’s healthcare workers continuing to do extraordinary work to protect the community, the Victorian Government has agreed to provide additional support for the sector as it prepares for the busiest winter yet. A Healthcare Worker Winter Retention and Surge Payment, alongside other practical help like free meals, will soon flow to Victoria’s healthcare workers providing much-needed support and helping to attract and retain critically important staff. The package will offer payments of $3,000 to all staff working in public hospitals and ambulance services, including nurses,
midwives, doctors, allied health professionals, paramedics, ward clerks and patient services assistants. Thousands of health staff in both clinical and non-clinical roles who have also been working under immense pressure in roles critical to the functioning of our health system will be provided the payment, including those working in cleaning, food services and laundry services. In recent months, health services have experienced challenges filling night shifts, which is why the package will also include free meals for workers who put their hands up to work overnight from July until the end
of the year. These initiatives, while clearly not ending the ongoing workforce challenges being experienced around Australia, represent a modest but meaningful way to support and retain healthcare workers within the public system. To be eligible for the full package, workers will need to be employed by a public health service by July 1 and still be employed on September 30. The payments will be made in two rounds, one after August 15 and one after September 30. Those who start between July 1 and September 30 will be eligible for a pro-rata
payment, providing an added incentive to help attract more staff to our public hospitals. More than 440 international healthcare workers have so far joined public hospitals since August last year, while up to 7,000 healthcare workers will be trained and hired under the Pandemic Repair Plan. In addition, the Government is taking pressure off the system through measures such as free flu vaccinations for Victorians throughout June, an expansion of the virtual ED initiative and more funding for treatment at home through the Better at Home program.

THE Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle made headlines this year after then-Defence Minister, Peter Dutton sent 20 of the $2.75M fighting vehicles to assist Ukraine. National Show and Shine committee member, Tony Clota, has announced that following representations to Mr Dutton and subsequent negotiations with the commander in charge of the ADF’s joint operations support staff, he had secured a Bushmaster for display at the Euroa Show and Shine on Sunday, October 2, 2022. Mr Clota had been hopeful of securing an Abrams A1M1 Main Battle Tank for the show, but this has not been possible due to some logistical problems in getting the tank to Euroa. It turned out that with the Abrams, weighing in at 62 tonnes, and with another 18.6 tonnes for its transporter, the ADF was not sure whether some bridges in the area would hold the combined 80+ tonnes. It was decided that the tank, transporter, and most of Burton’s Bridge falling into the Seven Creeks would not have been appreciated, so the Bushmaster was secured as a worthy replacement attraction. Known as the “world’s leading armoured vehicle” and manufactured in Bendigo, a
Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle is an armoured personnel carrier designed to carry and rapidly deploy up to 10 battleready soldiers. The four-wheel-drive vehicles are designed for all environments and are blast-resistant, complete with flat-run tyres and built-in selfinflation system. Retired Australian Army major general, Mick Ryan, describes the Bushmaster as a “Wonderfully Australian-designed and built machine.” For the technically minded, Bushmaster is powered by a Caterpillar 3126E 7.2L sixcylinder diesel, turbocharged and delivering 224 kW (300 hp) @ 2,200rpm and 1,166 Nm (860 lb ft) @ 1,440rpm. Transmission is a six-speed ECOMAT. With a top speed of over 100 Kph., Bushmaster has a range of 800km. It is fully air-conditioned and can sustain itself for a period of up to three days. Armament consists of a range of mortar launchers, and three mounts for machine guns up to 7.62mm (one front and two rear). Mr Clota said that accompanying the Bushmaster may be an ADF recruitment unit to answer questions and inform any interested folks about careers in the Australian Defence Force.

This promises to be intriguing match-up. Tatura chalked up its second win of the season last weekend when it skipped past Shepparton United. Coach Paul Kirby would have been delighted by the fact that it was the Dogs best game of the season. He will hope the likes of Chaz Sargeant (seven goals), Mitchell Elliott, Billy Cooper, Chris Ryan and Tom Sullivan can continue their good form against the Lions. The Lions have been in really good form in the past month, but coach Ben Davey will be wary of the trip to Tatura. He will turn to the likes of Seamus Feery, Lachlan Waite, Ben Rigoni, Joshua Alford and Jack Murphy to continue their good form to ensure the Lions’ charge towards the top six doesn’t get derailed. Tip: Seymour.
This promises to be an interesting match-up for different reasons. Both teams are 7-2, but have got to this position in vastly different fashion. The reigning premier has been challenged in games against some of the lower ranked teams on the table, but then produced outstanding performances against more fancied opponents. While the Eagles have produced some really good wins, including on the opening day against Euroa. Although, coach Chad Owens would like last week’s game back again after his Eagles were outplayed by Euroa in the return bout. Dirk Koenen, Lachie Christopher, James Herridge, Jono Aujard and Patrick Marks will be desperate to lead the Eagles to a much better four quarter effort. If they fail to do and allow Jason Morgan, Zachary Keogh, Lachlan Smith, Aidan Robinson, Jack Sheldon and Zac Norris to get on top and dictate the contest, then home team could well be in front at the final siren. Tip: Kyabram.
BENALLA V SHEPPARTON Benalla will be chasing its second win of the season when it plays host to Shepparton. While, the Bears will be desperate for another win which would keep them within striking distance of the sixth placed Mooroopna. Ruckman and VFL listed player Tom Downie, was brilliant in the win last weekend for the Saints. But he is likely to be back playing VFL, leaving the responsibility to Josh Marchbank in the ruck to lead the way. Wade King, Adam Walsh, Jordan Wolff and James Martiniello will be others trying to continue their good form to give the Saints a chance of victory. Bryce Stephenson, Connor Fleming, Edward Lindon, Rowan Hiscock, Rhiley Lau and ruckman Miles Rowlands will be buoyed by their efforts against Kyabram last weekend. If they can continue their effort, then they should win the four points. Tip: Shepparton.
SHEPPARTON SWANS V MOOROOPNA Mooroopna will be looking to get its

Shepparton United faces a massive challenge when it welcomes the top of the ladder Echuca. The Demons are showing glimpses of what they are capable when they are switched on but coach Paul “Hair” Serra knows the task ahead to get his group to play four quarters. Today, against the visiting Murray Bombers that will be the focus. And, he knows if they don’t the visitors will blitz them. Edward Adams, Sheldon Bogdan, Adam Pigatto, Blake Serra, Oscar Ryan and Joel Serra will be some of the key players trying to replicate the first half of the Kyabram game a fortnight ago. The Murray Bombers were challenged by the visiting Cats last weekend, but showed what they are capable of with easily their best half of football in the second half. Co-coach Andrew Walker and Ruory Kirkby (five goals) led the way while Aiden Mills, Jackson Stewart and Liam Tenace chipped in to ensure the win. If these guys continue their good form, the Demons will struggle to go with the visitors. Tip: Echuca.

Euroa will be chasing an eighth straight win when it welcomes Rochester today. The Pies are one of the form teams of the competition after a false start to 2022. After losing their opening two matches, they haven’t lost a game since. And, last weekend, they made a massive statement against a fellow premiership contender Mansfield by blitzing them in the first three quarters to run out an easy winner. Ben Giobbi (five goals), Adam Giobbi, Andrew Smith, Jayden Gleeson, Nathan Stewart and Jack McKernan (three goals) were outstanding in the dismantling of the Eagles. If they can continue that form and keep the likes of Andy Henderson, Jacob Atley, Mitch Cricelli, Jordan Harper and Angus Martin at bay, I think they can chalk up another strong win. Tip: Euroa.
three of its past four matches. The Cats, like most teams are missing some key players, but coach John Lamont is not one for using excuses for their losses. He will look at the positives of last weekend’s loss to Echuca, which came primarily in the first half to replicate against the Shepparton Swans. On the other hand, Swans coach Andrew Riordan will be hoping his group can replicate the last quarter against Benalla (8.4) from the first bounce against the visitors. Liam Betson, Dom Gugliotti, Jack Hunt, Ben Hicks and Ethan Hunt will be the Cats trying their best to ensure the Swans don’t jump out of the blocks. Zac Banch, Bryden Squire, Tyreece Collison and James Auld will be some of the Swans trying ensure their team start the game well to be a chance of an upset win. Tip: Mooroopna.
