Marathon man raises $130,000

Huge effort by local family

By Deanne Jeffers OVER $130,000 has been raised by Alastair Evans, who ran 270km this month to raise money for the Snowdome Foundation, a charity that helps fund blood cancer research. Alastair’s mother Sally passed away in 2016 after living with myeloma, an incurable type of blood cancer, for 19 years. She was diagnosed when her children were young and given three to five years to live. Continued Page 12

School celebrates social housing decision By Deanne Jeffers THE sale of the airspace above the Nixon and Maude Street carparks in Shepparton has been rejected by Greater Shepparton City Council in an emotional Council meeting last week. Local school, Shepparton ACE Secondary College, are celebrating the decision, which would have severely impacted more than 100 students and their families through disruptions, privacy and safety concerns,

reduced access, and more less than a year since moving to their new premises on Maude Street. School principal, Bronwyn Rose, says that the result was unexpected after an almost seven-month long fight to stop the development going ahead. “This whole situation has had a huge toll on Councillors, on the students and the whole community,” said Ms Rose. The result was met with applause from the audience at the gallery. While no social housing is planned for the CBD at this point, Councillors expressed something needs to be done to address affordable housing. They have supported the sale of land on Parkside Drive, Shepparton, to Women’s Housing Ltd for a 45-dwelling social housing project that will support vulnerable women and children.

Childcare crisis By Stephanie Holliday WITH recent announcements from the Government regarding an ambitious overhaul of early childhood education and care, many childcare centres across the Goulburn Valley and beyond are already struggling with staff shortages and the ability to offer more places to families as the current system stands. A $9B investment over the next decade was recently announced, in a bid to save families money and support women to return to the workforce. A typical household spends up to 20 percent of their income to cover childcare costs. When many families sit down to crunch the numbers, it’s simply not worth returning to full-time work, that’s if they can secure a spot at a centre. Wy nd h a m E a rly L e a r n i ng c ent re director, Kathy Beer, disclosed that the centre currently has a waiting list of over 100 children for 2022, with the wait list for 2023 increasing daily. The major factor contributing to a lack of places is staffing shortages across the industry. “We are doing our best to run the centre at normal capacity; however, our nursery room is currently running with lower numbers. Some other centres have even had to close some days or combine with other centres,” said Kathy. “We are down three educators, with others in the region facing even more chronic shortages.” The government will aim to further build upon the ‘Best Start, Best Life’

So much goes into training and being an early childcare educator, and our renumeration also needs to reflect that,” said Kathy. “There’s a long way to go if we are to have enough educators to supplement the proposed 30 hours a week of four-year-old kinder.”

Indonesion-born Dery is a largely self-taught artist who came to Shepparton to work as a farm hand. His fame as an artist is growing, with much of his work gracing ethnic restaurants and businesses in the region. “I used red and blue as the background for this painting because it comes from the dominant colours of the Australian flag and used gold leaf as a symbol of glory.”

“This may be a legal victory but, it’s certainly not a moral one” By Kelly Carmody THE news delivered from VCAT last week has left Murchison locals and renovators, Deb Bower and Robert Cardalish, absolutely devastated, after the removal of their fence and flowerpots was ordered on their heritage listed building, formerly the old Murchison Bank. Locals and many of the 900+ people who signed their petition to save their fence last year took to social media last week to express their opinions on the matter. One person wrote “this is a travesty of justice” another commenting “there appears to be no democracy in Shepparton Council.” Deb and Robert commented that they feel Greater Shepparton City Council has very little interest in the community of Murchison and stated that the decision was not about the planning process and came down to the Heritage Advisor and CEO’s subjective opinions. “They said our building was too masculine and austere, making the fence too pretty,” said Deb. “We believe the fence suits the style of the building, so did everyone else that supported our petition,” she added. “We are devastated that this rare and authentic cast iron will be damaged during the removal. It is the fifth fence for this building, and it will not be the last beyond us,” said Robert. “We tried our best to work within the policies, but they just kept changing the goal

His fundraising will help fund treatments for Australian blood cancer patients, so they can live longer, better lives too. The mammoth run from Melbourne to the Port of Echuca was one of Alastair’s hardest. “The first day it was raining, and I had the wind straight in my face all day. These were the hardest conditions I’ve run in, but on the last day Mum must have decided to give us some reprieve and there was blue sky and sun.” Alastair said it was surreal running into town with locals cheering. He was escorted to the finish line by a fire truck and police car. “The community really rallied around Mum when she was unwell. This was

exemplified running through town,” said Alastair. He thanked his support crew; his friends Cody Bradley and Ash McCorkell, girlfriend Amy Farr-Jones, and grandfather, team ‘skipper,’ Brian Gretton-Watson. “I’m so appreciative of everyone’s generosity. It is very humbling,” he said. “The mission of Positive Journey was to bring people together and to provide hope, which is Snowdome Foundation’s mission statement, and this has been mirrored. It has been great to put a smile on people’s faces.” “We’ve started something special. June Council Meeting Wrap This month’s Council Meeting was held on Tuesday, 21 June.

2022/2023 Budget

Council adopted the 2022/2023 Budget following extensive community consultation. Council received 37 community submissions which resulted in more than $330,000 added to the Budget for several community projects and initiatives. These include: • Murchison-Toolamba Community Hub design – $80,000 • Katandra West Hall landscaping – $70,000 • Shepparton Search and Rescue increased contribution to $88,000 • Tatura Park Playground – $50,000 • Toolamba Tennis Court redevelopment design – $40,000 • Shepparton Foodshare contribution increased to $50,000

Climate Emergency Action Plan Council adopted the Our Climate Safe Future – Climate Emergency Action Plan.

It comes after Council declared a Climate Emergency in March 2020 and resolved to develop a Climate Emergency Action Plan to set a roadmap for action.

The plan provides designs for both on and off-road connections to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, strengthening connectivity within the eastern areas of Shepparton.

By Deanne Jeffers GRAHAMVALE Primary School is a local recipient of a road safety funding boost designed to deliver programs that reduce trauma and save lives. 90 Victorian schools, councils, and notfor-profit organisations have been selected as part of the $1.5M Community Road Safety Grants program. Grahamvale Primary School will use their share of $4,950 for speed advisory messages and variable messaging signs. School principal, Simone Higgens said the school is looking for ways to make student and pedestrian safety a priority, particularly as a high number of trucks drive past the school. “The speed limit outside the school is 60 kilometers per hour, and 40 during school times. This funding will help us access

speed signage that communicates the speed limit at various times and provides more opportunities for cars, and trucks in particular, to be aware of their speed.” “The school council have spoken with local highway patrol to find ways we can work together. We’re also looking for anything the school can purchase that will make drivers more aware.” Simone says that previously teachers have seen a difference in the speed of passing traffic when engaging variable messaging signs, such as illuminated signs that show the speed vehicles are travelling or show a ‘sad’ or ‘happy’ face depending on whether they are speeding or travelling at the correct speed. directors for a term of one year. DURING these school holidays, GoulburnMurray Water (GMW) is reminding people visiting lakes, dams, and reservoirs to be safe on the water. GMW Water Storage Services general manager Martina Cusack encouraged people to make safety a priority during the holidays. “Most of our storages are at very healthy levels, so we’re expecting a lot of visitors in the coming weeks,” she said. “We want everyone to have fun, but most of all we want everyone to return home safely. Boat operators should always wear personal flotation devices and maintain a lookout for

hazards and other users at all times. Conditions can change quickly, so stay up to date with weather reports when heading out,” she said. For boaters, several simple steps can significantly improve their safety: • Observe water levels and the potential for submerged hazards – if in doubt, slow to five knots or less; • Seek local knowledge on conditions and hazards. • Maintain a good lookout. • Ensure the motor kill switch is attached to the driver. • Take note of signage at boat ramps.

• Ensure the vessel is equipped with the required safety equipment and that it is in good working condition and easily accessible. • Remember alcohol and water do not mix. Do not drink on the water. • Do not overload the vessel. By Deanne Jeffers CONSTRUCTION at Goulburn Valley Health’s emergency department is on track to be completed in August, doubling the capacity of emergency care in Shepparton. Minister for Health, Martin Foley officially opened the hospital’s new 10-cot special care nursey and 12-bed paediatric ward, along with the next state of the expanded emergency department. "This is a $230M plus program that has had to take into account the delivery in a Covid environment. I want to thank Goulburn Valley Health and their various contractors for achieving what’s been really challenging,” he said. The newly redeveloped emergency department includes 36 treatment spaces including nine short-stay beds for patients who require less than 24-hours care, doubling existing capacity. It is also fitted out with the latest technology, featuring two new x-ray rooms, a CT scan room, and an ultrasound room. Local family Lauren, Bob and five-year-old Greta Knowles have frequented GV Health since Greta was diagnosed with leukaemia last year. “While she does receive a lot of her treatment in Melbourne, for emergency trips — of which we’ve had five since last school holidays — it makes a massive difference that we can come here rather than drive two hours to Melbourne,” Lauren said. “The staff have been amazing throughout, but it’s made a big difference to us coming into a new, state-of-the-art facility that’s

Waning restrictions for winter MASKS continue to be required in sensitive settings, like hospitals and care facillities. However, from Friday, June 24, mask mandates were lifted inside airports, but must still be worn when travelling on public transport, taxis, ride shares and planes. Workers who interact with a vulnerable person are still required three Covid vaccine doses. This includes residential aged care and disability care, healthcare, and custodial and emergency services, including police. Imposed third-dose mandates in education, food distribution, meat and seafood processing and quarantine accommodation sectors have been lifted. Vaccination policies will be the responsibility of individual workplaces. Positive cases must still isolate for seven days from when they tested positive but may leave home to drive a household member directly to or from education or work without leaving their vehicle. They can also leave home to receive medical care,

a Covid test, or in an emergency, including the risk of harm. Because almost 95 percent of eligible Victorians have received two vaccine doses, rules requiring general workers to work from home unless they are double-vaccinated are lifted. Employers may set their own workplace conditions. Visitor caps to care facilities, including residential aged care and disability are removed, with residents able to see any number of people as long as they test negative on a rapid antigen test that day. If a test is unavailable, a person can only be present for limited reasons such as end-of-life visits. Centres may introduce their own visitor rules to respond to local risk. “These orders mean we can keep in place sensible settings to reduce case numbers and hospitalisations through winter, when the risk of transmission is highest, while allowing Victorians to live safely with COVID-19,” said Victorian Health Minister, Martin Foley.

‘Tech Neck’ warning as scrolling time surges LIFESTLE related causes can wreak havoc on spinal health. Since the pandemic, many Australians have increased mobile phones usage to scroll on social media, stream content, shop, and to work. 60 degrees of neck flexion can place up to 27kg of weight through the spine, causing an increase in the mid-back curvature, commonly known as ‘tech neck,’ which can create a burden on physical and mental health. 39 percent of Aussies report experiencing neck pain over the last 12 months. The impact of neck issues goes beyond physical symptoms, including sleep loss and mental exhaustion. The Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) have this advice to help care for your neck health: 20/20 BREAKS: when using your phone or working, take short 20-second breaks every 20 minutes to stand up, move around and stretch. CHIN TUCKS: when working or using a phone, do 5-10 chin tucks every hour. Start in a seated position with shoulders relaxed, look straight forward, place finger

on the chin and without moving the finger, pull the chin and head straight back until a good stretch is felt at the base of the head and top of the neck. Hold for five seconds if possible and bring the chin forward again back to the finger. CHANGE HOW YOU HOLD YOUR PHONE: bring the screen to eye level so your head is not slouched forward or too high. Keep a neutral spine so your ears are in line with the shoulders. CONSIDER SLEEPING POSITION AND SET UP: if you are a stomach sleeper and wake up with a sore neck, consider switching to side sleeping. Ensure your pillow is supportive and the right height for your body size and sleeping position. If you lie mostly on your side, the pillow should keep your neck in a straight position, without tilting. If you lie on your back, the pillow should be thinner, so your head is not pushed forward. STAY ACTIVE: include regular walks in your day, for a minimum of five minutes, every hour. If you work out regularly, focus on your core muscles as this helps keep your body stable, balanced, and protects

Refugee week ran from June 19 until June 25 and the theme was ‘Healing’. Thon Thon is the Ethnic Council’s community development officer, and the film screened at GOTAFE detailed his harrowing journey as a nine-year-old where he walked from Sudan to Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp.

our competition each week, whilst also getting to promote our League and Clubs can only continue to benefit our League as a whole. One FM is an important asset to our local community, and we are happy to partner with them to provide content that is Live and Local,” said Fraser. This renewed partnership will see local football return to One FM for the first time in 2022, after a 30-year history of broadcasting local football competitions throughout the Goulburn Valley. The Apprenticeship Factory KDL and One FM and their partners say they continue to work on the development of a Livestream Broadcast offering for the future that will supplement, rather than replace, radio coverage.

BENALLA V SEYMOUR Benalla will be looking to test itself against the top of the table Seymour today. The Lions will be wary of taking Benalla lightly as on the day it is capable of an upset. The Saints were winners a fortnight ago against Shepparton and if they can replicate that form then they have a chance of pushing the visitors. Sarah Szczykulski and Grace Angel celebrated their milestones with a win last weekend. And if they can lead the way again and curb the influence the likes of Sally Washfold, Kelsey Pallpratt and Chloe Hill, then they should get the win. Tip: Seymour.

MANSFIELD V SHEPPARTON UNITED Mansfield faces a big challenge when it welcomes the in-form Shepparton United today. The Demons have been in some good form of late, with wins against Kyabram, Echuca and Shepparton Swans in recent weeks. That said, coach Kara Blizzard will be demanding the best from her girls and warning them against complacency. Bess Schnioffsky and Liv Kirby were standouts in the win over the Swans which allowed Jesse Barnes to make the most of her opportunities in the attacking third. If they can play well again, the Demons should win comfortably. Tip: Shepparton United.

KYABRAM V TATURA Kyabram will be hoping it can replicate the recent form of late despite not chalking up too many wins as a result when it takes on Tatura. The Bombers have improved this year

under coach Sara Kent. But they just don’t have the wins to show for it, but they haven’t already beaten Tatura in 2022. Tatura has not been able to replicate the form of 2021 where it finished in the top six when Covid-19 ended the year. Molly Kennedy led from the front last weekend in the loss to Euroa. Charlotte Thomas and Steph Gorrie were two other key contributors in the loss. If they can continue that form, then the Bulldogs will fancy their chances of a second win of the season. Tip: Kyabram.

MOOROOPNA V ROCHESTER Rochester will be desperate to keep its slim finals aspirations alive when it takes on the second placed Mooroopna. The Tigers scored their third win of the season when overcoming Kyabram in a one goal thriller. Bridgette Holt was the standout for the Tigers. If she can continue her good form and bring her team-mates on the journey, then the Tigers will feel confident of giving a good account of themselves. For mine, the Cats are playing too well to drop this game. Tip: Mooroopna.

SHEPPARTON SWANS V ECHUCA Shepparton Swans dropped out of the top six with its loss to Shepparton United last weekend. Coach Courtney Simpson knows if her girls want to figure in the September action then it needs to claim a big scalp. Today’s the chance to do that when they welcome Echuca. The visitors are in good form and are looking to consolidate their place in the top six. Hannah Garner, Klarindah Hudson and Sophie Atkinson will be important for the
