Leaders sign historic partnership In a state first, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by Goulburn Valley Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Chair Nicole Atkinson and GSSC Executive Principal Barbara O’Brien. There are 32 consultative groups across Victoria and the Goulburn Valley group is the first to sign a formal partnership with a school. A SPOKESPERSON said the team aims to promote the perfect ‘lifestyle blend’ and plan to draw attendees in by cheekily renaming smoothie ingredients to the lifestyle assets of the region. Milk will become a ‘long walk by the river,’ fruit will be renamed ‘exercise’ and juice will be ‘more time with family.’ Blender bikes will then be used to mix the ingredients, and attendees can try a sample of their ideal blend. Comedian Col Cameron has been recruited to share his love of a regional lifestyle. Col will bring the fun and energy, while helping Greater Shepparton stand out amongst the many other exhibitors. L i z C on n ick , pa r t nersh ips a nd marketing coordinator, said a major part of attending the expo was promoting the GROW Greater Shepparton Jobs Board, with all job enquiries received during the expo being directed to the website. “While we know that every region has jobs, Greater Shepparton offers a balanced economy and lifestyle like no other,” she said. "We are encouraging all businesses and organisations to post their job vacancies on the Jobs Board by Wednesday, July 13. Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO, Linda Nieuwenhuizen encourages job seekers to join some of Australia’s most iconic brands like SPC, Pental and Bega, as well as emerging innovators who offer exciting careers and business opportunities. “With a fantastic lifestyle, excellent schools, university and training options and enviable arts and sporting facilities, Shepparton has something for everyone. “We also offer easy access to snowfields, waterways and some of the best food venues and wineries in the country…all of which are right on our doorstep. “If you are planning your next career or business move, make sure you visit Shepparton and see what we have to offer,” she said. Local businesses should submit their job vacancies A SA P on the GROW Greater Sheppar ton Jobs Board via growgreatershepparton.com.au Late job postings will be accepted. CHIEF executive at the Greater Shepparton Foundation (GSF), Cheryl Hammer, has stepped down from the role to pursue her political career as the Liberal candidate for Shepparton. "Cheryl has been with the Foundation since its inception and has been the driving force behind its development from just an idea to a leader in the community in assisting people to live better lives,” said GSF chairman, Rhys Holleran. Cheryl has worked in the local philanthropic sector for eight years, being involved in the development of projects in early childcare education, health education in culturally and linguistically diverse communities, scholarships for young people aspiring to tertiary education, and during Covid, initiatives that supported food and material relief for those struggling with loss of work and lockdowns.
STEPPING DOWN... After eight years, Cheryl Hammer has resigned from her position at the Greater Shepparton Foundation to pursue her political career. Photo: Supplied.
“Taking on the task of developing an important philanthropic organisation to serve our region from startup stage was daunting, but to see what we are achieving today with our community is hugely rewarding,” said Cheryl. “It is with a heavy heart I leave the role, which was always more than a job to me, but it is with the same determination and fervour that I now take on my next role as the Liberal candidate for the seat of Shepparton.” A spokesperson for GSF said it will be business as usual at the Foundation transitioning to new leadership, with a full-time CEO role to be advertised now.

GREATER Shepparton City Council has commenced annual tree planting, in line with their Urban Forest Strategy and Street Tree Renewal program. The goal of Urban Forest Strategy tree planting program is to increase green canopy cover in public urban areas to 40 percent by 2037. This year approximately 1,200 advanced trees are being planted in nature strips between June and September with 5420 trees planted in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Tatura, Dookie, Murchison, Kialla and Toolamba since the strategy was adopted in 2017. The trees are specially grown and selected to suit our local climate. Some are chosen specifically for planting under power lines, so they do not cause maintenance issues when
they are full grown. Council undertakes extensive monitoring of new trees for the first two years with watering and maintenance by which stage they are usually well established; however, residents are encouraged to water trees if needed, particularly in the summer months. Council's director infrastructure Gary Randhawa said the trees provide significant economic, social, environmental, ecological, and aesthetic benefits to our communities. "In addition, the health benefits associated with making our streets a more appealing and enjoyable place to be, increasing the green canopy is one of the most cost effective and efficient public assets for adapting urban areas to climate change," he said.

OF those names, around 600 served during World War II, at a time when Tatura had a population of around 2,000. Filled with familiar family names, the Robert Mactier Memorial Garden is a place for reflection and celebration of local legends and sacrifice. “We would like to extend the memorial to recognise veterans who served in more recent conflicts and in peacekeeping and peacemaking missions,” said Mal. “It can be hard to catch everyone, but we’d like to find as many local residents as possible who fought overseas to complete the memorial display.” The additional plaques will honour younger local veterans, as well as anyone who has participated in Australia’s modern defence operations.

Young people: Drive change in your region
CHILDREN and young people live, learn and play in local places that the Council run or look after. For this reason, Council wants to hear from them about the ways our neighbourhoods impact their ability to live happy, healthy, and connected lives.
Greater Shepparton City Council are partnering with the Faculty of Education at Monash University and VicHealth to deliver the ‘Kids Co-Designing Healthy Places’ program, which aims to support local councils to work on designing places with kids through a range

of online tools and guidance. Looking after the health of people in our community is one of the important jobs that local councils do. Greater Shepparton’s ‘Municiple Public Health and Wellbeing Plan’ guides how Council will work over coming years to make our neighbourhood a healthier place to live. “We really need your help, or specifically we need your kids’ help!” said mayor, Cr Shane Sali. “We are going to be designing places and spaces that children and young people use including local streets, parks, playgrounds, sportsgrounds, libraries, and shopping areas.
We want to know what they think what they would like to see in their neighbourhood.” “It’s really important that we have your young persons’ input and ideas which will help us to plan for and build healthier places for you, your family, and everyone else.” “By including our young people's voices and involving them in the design process we can build healthier futures together,” said Cr Sali. Families interested in providing feedback for a healthy future in our region can visit https://shaping.greatershepparton.com.au/ to participate or look out for the insert in The Adviser next Wednesday, July 20.

Councillor sworn in HAVING been successfully elected at the recent election countback, Councillor Dinny Adem undertook his oath of office on Monday. Cr Adem said that he is happy about being re-elected, having served on the Greater Shepparton City Council as mayor in 2016 and 2017, and deputy mayor in 2020 before retiring from Council. “Water retention for agriculture is vital,” said Cr Adem. “These are State and Federal issues. However, Council plays an important role in advocating for the needs of our region.” He said creating social and affordable housing is a key issue Council will seek to tackle over the next term, as well as finding
ways to strengthen the Goulburn Valley Designated Area Migration Agreement (GV DAMA). “DAMA was established to create a pathway for immigrants to citizenship and to address workforce shortages, but it is not delivering how they thought and there must be a better version to consider.” Mayor, Shane Sali congratulated Mr Adem on his appointment, saying he looked forward to working alongside him. “On behalf of Council, I welcome Dinny to the team and look forward to working with him to achieve strong outcomes for our community,” he said.

independent Treaty Authority to further enable negotiations to occur. Press coverage of hardworking Aunty Geraldine Atkinson co-chair of the First Peoples’s Assembly with local Member Suzanna Sheed and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams at Parliament indicates the importance of gender equality in government. The strong Aboriginal voices and actions of the traditional owners, the oldest culture in the world, have changed the sad history of our electorate and in Australia. Bernie and I moved here 58 years ago from the still-safe Labor Seat of Northcote, pleased to come to a population like ours with early migrant residents working together and supporting each other. Our growing up and education in the Victorian heartland of earlier Aboriginal strengths of William Cooper, Doug Nicholls and the Elder women are commemorated in the parks and gardens, the same as we now enjoy. We were both raised with values of respect and social justice in democracy. Sadly, struggles for Aboriginal justice with people living on Daish’s Paddock were evident. Living in rental housing abutting the site of the proposed GV Hospital, of community working to support that happening and continuing with fundraising is well recognised. In 1968, Pat O’Connell Snr. managing the public housing estates offered us the purchase of a home in the new South Shepparton estate. How fortunate were we and with next door neighbours Aunty Elsie (recently deceased aged 91), niece of William Cooper, Uncle Bill Bailey and two children, we spent the next 26 years learning the truths of Aboriginal struggles since colonisation. We later put that imparted knowledge to work. SOCIAL HOUSING Dear Adviser newspaper, Thank you so much for supporting the ACE school. At last ACE have won this ridiculous council proposal (Social housing proposal cnr Nixon and Maude streets). Mind you, they shouldn’t have had to go through this hell in the first place. Council should not have let the bad idea even get to first base in the first place!! I don’t know why Council didn’t buy the big chunk of land on the corner of Vaughan and Hoskin streets, where Phillips Winery used to be, for the social housing project. That would have been a perfect site, so close to all the essentials. But I see there is a sign saying apartments will now be built there. Now that’s a missed opportunity. Kindest regards, Susie Daniel, Shepparton
YOUR SIGN TO SAVE LIVES Dear Editor, I am hoping that you will publish this letter to save lives. To everyone who thinks that the road signs would look great on your wall, please stop and think about the lives, you save maybe a relative’s life. The signs are put out to warn of dangers, hazards, etc. when they are removed people are unaware of the dangers. It is a $1,000 fine for possessing removed signs, plus the loss of six demerit points but more importantly, lives are put at risk when
signs are taken. If you have any of these roads signs at home, then just look for any traffic control depot, or any roadworks and put them there and they will make it back to the correct people as all traffic management work together to improve public safety. Thank you, Toni Delmonte, Shepparton
UNSUNG HEROES Dear Editor, I would like to express my thanks and praise to some of our country and city unsung heroes in the medical profession. We have a wonderful health system in our country, and we should not take it for granted. Thanks to my Nagambie Medical Centre doctors and staff for their ongoing support with my bad health over the past few years. I was rushed to Goulburn Valley Healthcare Emergency Department (ED) in Shepparton on Friday, June 17, for emergency help. Their ED multicultural nurses and doctors eased my bad condition and after much running around, were able to secure me a bed and a urologist specialist at the Epworth Freemasons Hospital in East Melbourne. I thank them for all their care and arranging patient transport to the Melbourne hospital. My surgery was done on Monday by the specialist and his theatre team. I would like to thank them and the nurses and services staff at the hospital for their excellent pre-op and after care. I would also like to say how thankful I have been to be able to afford Defence Health insurance for 55 years. Which helps my husband and I be covered for ill health in our senior years. Thanks everyone for all your care and compassion. Diane Grant , Nagambie Want to have your say? Parcel text scams WELCOME HOME... Blocks in the picturesque and amenity rich Kensington Gardens village are selling fast. Pictured is village manager Troy Van Den Berghe. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.
peace of mind Independent living with 15 BLOCKS NOW AVAILABLE
WHEN Kensington Gardens village manager Troy Van Den Berghe asks residents around the club house what’s on for the weekend, they tell him resolutely, “Every day is a weekend for us.” Kensington Gardens is pretty quiet this time of year for a community of almost 300. Many are taking advantage of the opportunity to pack up and travel during winter knowing that their home and possessions are being looked after by the lifestyle estate’s caretakers and added security. “You can get rid of the mower when you move in, and know that when you’re not here, your garden will be cared for,” said Mr Van Den Berghe. Over the recent school holidays, many residents enjoyed hosting grandchildren at their home in Kensington Gardens, where they can use all amenities, including a library and
computer room, gym, swimming pool, spa and more. “We’ve had families in the cinema enjoying movies together, and I think many residents think it’s nice to have children around and plenty of space and support to enjoy their family here,” said Mr Van Den Berghe. Located on a 55-acre estate on Channel Road in the heart of a South Shepparton residential area, prospective residents may select their home from a range of award-winning threeand-four-bedroom floor plans, with club house and amenities included in the cost. 15 blocks are available now, with more on the way when Stage 6 is completed at the end of December. These 31 new blocks are selling fast, with only around 14 still available. To arrange a private, one-on-one inspection, please contact Troy Van Den Berghe on 0417 648 286 or troy@ kensingtongardens.com.au/
ALL Australians, particularly older members of the community, are being urged to be aware of scam SMS messages with unusual looking links. Scams are evolving as it targets Australians, and it may now look like a package delivery message from a service such as Australia Post, DHL or Amazon. If you’ve received one of these messages, DO NOT open the link without confirming it is legitimate. Clicking on the link may install malware that uses your contact list to send similar text messages to other people without your knowledge, potentially infecting their device. It may also access your personal information and banking details. It is important to remember that some SMS scams may slip into your legitimate message streams to gain your confidence. For example, a scam claiming to be from Australia Post may appear among legitimate past messages from the postal service about parcel delivery. To confirm if a package delivery message is real, contact the sender using contact details you’ve identified yourself, such as through an official website, or via information received at the time of the original purchase, such as a tracking number. If you receive one of these scam SMS messages: • Delete the message and block the number if it is unknown • Do not click on any links or call the number • If the malware installs, contact your bank and ensure your accounts are secure • You may also want to reach out to your telco or an IT professional for further assistance • If you have lost personal information to a scammer, you can contact IDCARE or call 1800 595 160 • You can make a report to ReportCyber if you have been a victim of this cybercrime
Now you’re living 15 blocks available to build on right now

Supporting independent living
into the future
From Left: Uncle Donald Bux with Rumbalara Elders Facility support worker Bronwyn Atkinson.
THE Home Care Packages Program provides older people who want to stay at home with access to a range of ongoing personal services, support services and clinical care that help them with their day-to-day activities. The program is part of the Australian Government’s continuum of care for older people in Australia, providing services between the Commonwealth Home Support Program and residential aged care. Commonwealth funded Home Care Packages are one of the ways that older Australians can access affordable care
services to get some help at home. They are designed for those with more complex care needs that go beyond what the Commonwealth Home Support Program can provide: Home Care Packages can be an option if you need a coordinated approach to the delivery of your help at home - perhaps because you need help with many everyday tasks, or the care you need is more complex or intensive. By Deanne Jeffers RETURNING for the first time in two years, the 2022 Vic Variety Bash is set to be a big one, with 130 cars prepared for the 10-day journey from Melbourne to Cairns, to raise funds for disadvantaged children. Kialla’s Don Dimstas is joining the Bash in his Top Gun themed 1983 Holden WB Statesman Deville. He scored a seat in a car for the 2019 Bash, travelling to Geraldton, WA. “It was an unbelievable experience,” said Don. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d have an experience like that, so of course I’ve organised a car of my own to
tackle the Bash this year.” With the help of local businesses, Don has already raised $20,000, equating to the same amount spent on the car, which has also been supported by local businesses including L&P Mackin who supplied new tyres, and parts from Burson Auto Parts. “The support has been amazing. Variety is a fantastic charity, and no one has hesitated to get behind us and the cause. Plus participating in the Bash, you get to see the difference they make.” “We start each day giving out little things out to kids at schools – this could be games, socks, balls, t-shirts, small things to make their day,
and donations too. They cook us breakfast, we get our coordinates and then we are off to another part of the country,” said Don. He will be driving with his son in law, Vic Bovalino and cousin, Cohn Kreskas, who are bringing Top Gun costumes on the road. “I suppose depending on the day you’ve had will decide who gets to wear the Goose costume,” joked Don. The Top Gun 1983 Statesmen Deville is a three-speed automatic, with a 5L engine and its' very own fighter jet. The Bash sets off on August 16. IN 2019, the Victorian Government introduced new legislation to make the spa and swimming pool registration mandatory. The first round of inspections are due by June 1st 2022. Pool and Spa barriers are designed to reduce the likelihood of drownings and near drownings. As such, to be able to apply the mandated requirements in the standards to ensure compliance when undertaking inspections is a huge responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. I began training to become a registered inspector in 2020. In January 2022 my application was accepted by the VBA and my license as a Building Inspector - Pool Safety was issued. A Shepparton local for the past 23 years, many local pool owners may know me from my time

training and working at Poolwerx in Shepparton. I have extensive knowledge of the pool and spa maintenance and service industry, and barrier compliance felt like a natural progression in my career. North Vic Pool Safety Compliance is a one woman show. I answer the calls and emails, I book the job, I do the inspection, and I sort out the clients’ relevant documents. I am a proud supporter of the Hunter Boyle Swim Foundation; a cause close to the hearts of many Shepparton families. Donations from every pool that I inspect goes towards the foundation, providing swimming lessons for kids and training for swimming teachers. Call Row at 0413 580 937

Saturday’s smash hit
GREAT DAY FOR IT... Arthur earned Best on court during the recent round of Tennis Saturday’s. Photo: Ben Ladson.
By Ben Ladson SATURDAY'S SDTA Tennis on July 9 saw some tightly contested matches, with two courts tied for Best On Court (BOC) performances. Court 1 had Justin and Ronnie tied on top, while Court 4 had Michael and Kylie inseparable for first place. Court 2 had young gun Lorenzo clinching it, and it came down to the final set for Arthur (pictured) to claim BOC on Court 3. If you're interesting in having a hit of tennis, come along to 4 Packham Street, Shepparton at 1.15. It only costs $2 and everyone is welcome to participate.

It is complemented by the Community Sport Sector COVID-19 Survival Package that provided $50 million to more than 7,500 clubs, leagues, state associations and other organisations across the sport and active recreation sector. Applications close on July 21, 2022. For more information and to apply for the Sporting Club Grants Program, visit: sport.vic.gov.au/grants-and-funding.
