By Natasha Fujimoto JARROD Lyle was an exceptional golfer, friend and family man, who irrevocably left his mark upon the golfing world at a young age. From all accounts, he was in life and in sport, an exemplar of fine character.Atjust 17, Jarrod was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, commencing a battle he would fight with the recurrent disease for the remainder of his life. Despite this, Jarrod remarkably forged a distinguished name for himself on the international circuit. By Stephanie Holliday CONNOR Nevins is a 15-year-old from Tatura who has become a master of the intricate art of quilt making. Connor was recently declared the winner of the secondary school category at the Victorian Quilters Showcase 2022. The winning sample quilt took 16 months of hard work to complete and is comprised of 64 blocks. Catharina’s Vintage Stitches in Kyabram sponsored Connor’s entry, and their delightful shopfront is where Connor does most of his sewing. Since age 9, Connor has been sewing up a storm under the guidance of the store’s owners, Catharina and Simone. “I was really surprised and excited when they announced my quilt had won first place,” reflectsQuiltingConnor.isno easy feat, with the intricacies and precise nature of quilting requiring immense skill and utilisation of mathematical calculations, a steady hand and a critical eye for detail. Thus far, Connor has made an incredible 12 quilts and various cushions, pillows and bags. “When creating a new quilt, I first source inspiration from a pattern that interests me or even use online resources such as Pinterest. After that, I find fabrics that will complement the design," said Connor when quizzed on his creative“Currently, process.I’m working on a quilt for the ‘Very Snuggly Quilt’ program which will be donated to a patient at the Royal Children’s Hospital.”Connor juggles his quilting alongside his year 10 studies, which he does remotely through Virtual School Victoria. “Eventually, I’d love to be a sewing machine technician. I am working out what my path to that end goal will be, perhaps through the field of engineering or completing an electrical apprenticeship.”Youcanview Connor’s award-winning quilt in the front window of Catharina’s Vintage Stitches on Allan Street, Kyabram.

“There’s probably is not any other primary school in this region that would have a facility like this, and that was a really significant reason for getting involved,” he said.“Peter and Maria have obviously been able to build a successful business in the region and they love the opportunity to give back through projects like this. “It’s something that they can give back to the community that has been so good to them.”While beginning as a voluntary program for a few students once a week, now woodworking can cater for large groups of students most days of the week, with staff like Poppy Greg now employed to deliver the program.“The children only get a taste of woodwork skills while at Orrvale, but our hope is that many children will finish primary school knowing if this is an interest they want to pursue in secondary school and beyond,” said principal Brennan.

“In 2020, former student and current grandfather at the school, Peter Copulos, saw the work we were doing and was very keen to support us,” said principal, Adam Brennan.PeterCopulos, who attended school at Orrvale between 1948 and 1951 and has had children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren attend the school, provided $50,000 for the construction. “Peter’s extremely generous donation to the school has enabled us to construct a purpose-built facility, ‘The Peter Copulos Workshop’, that can now cater for large groups of students and expand our program beyond woodworking.” The facility was opened by John Evans on behalf of the Copulos family, who could not attend due to an illness. Mr Evans said Peter was eager to contribute to the project because the woodworking facilities provide “a real point of difference to the school.”
MORE Victorians will soon be able to receive Japanese encephalitis vaccine to protect themselves against the infection spread by mosquitos in the warmer months.Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas recently announced the free eligibility criteria for vaccine roll-out has been expanded to include anyone who lives or works in Greater Shepparton, Campaspe andPeopleMoira.aged between 50 and 65 and who work in a role that is largely outdoors are also included in expanded eligibility group. The vaccine will be available from select GPs, local public health units (including some COVID-19 vaccination hubs), community pharmacies and local councils. Japanese encephalitis can cause rare, potentially serious infection of the brain and is spread to humans by mosquito bites. Most people will have no symptoms, with only one percent developing a fever and headache, which could develop further into serious disease. The first-ever case of Japanese encephalitis was recorded in Victoria, last year. In addition to vaccine, wearing long sleeve, loose-fitting clothing outdoors and applying repellents with ingredients such as picaridin or DEET on exposed skin are practical preventatives. The virus typically occurs in many parts of southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea and Torres Strait – and occasionally Queensland.
FREE masks are being provided to reduce transmission of Covid and other respiratory diseases, and to protect vulnerable people throughout winter. Over the next four to six weeks, every person that presents for a free RAT or PCR test will also receive one box of 10 N95 masks, along with instructions on how to wear them to be most effective. Masks will also be distributed through some community organisations, including multicultural, multi-faith events, Aboriginal gatherings and disability service providers.Inaddition, masks will be available at staffed train stations and some authorised officers and V/Line conductors will carry masks with them to hand out as needed.
Wearing a face mask is a simple and effective way to protect yourself and those around you. Mask wearing is strongly recommended indoors, where you cannot physically distance, if you have symptoms of Covid, or if you are with people who may be vulnerable to COVID-19. Masks are still mandatory in high-risk settings such as hospitals, aged care, and on public transport.AsofThursday, August 11, there are 189 active cases of Covid recorded in the 3630 postcode, and 37,085 active cases in the state.Itis more important now than ever that we take steps to protect ourselves, our loved ones and the health system. million masks made free over winter

Caution required Once temperatures hit 16˚C or more at sunset, fruit fly have the ability to mate. If there are areas where temperatures are warmer at dusk flies will mate and then lay eggs into fruit one or two days later. Look out for black marks and soft spots on early ripening fruit that might indicate fruit fly stings. If you cut suspect fruit open and hold it up to the light you may be able to see eggs and young larvae glistening in the fruit pulp. Fruit requiring extra care Loquats, apricots and winter citrus require extra attention at this time of the year. If you have loquats or late-hanging fruit such as pomegranates, quinces or apples, with sting marks, pull them off or rake them up and feed them to the chooks. Another option is to destroy them in plastic bags placed in the sun or by deep burial. Infested fruit must not be placed in the compost heap where warmth and humidity provides one of the best spots for fruit fly to survive. If you have lemons and had fruit flies last season try putting a male or female fruit fly trap or two nearby to check if these pests are starting to move. Try planting out tomato seedlings or grafted plants in a warm spot now, so you get fruit prior to Christmas before fruit fly populations become more active. Cherry and Roma tomatoes may be slightly more resistant to fruit fly attack than larger, softer tomato varieties.

I sponsored an e-petition recently calling for the restoration of democracy in the Victorian Parliament. This is a right every other lower house in Australia Ienjoys.callfor this issue to be debated almost every Tuesday of parliament and every time the government refuses to allow the debate. The non-government business program allows non-government members to move motions, progress private members bills and utilise a number of other procedures in the house. Through friend and golfing great, Robert Allenby, Jarrod became a tireless ambassador for Challenge – an organisation dedicated to raising money for children with cancer and their families. In 2019, a year after Jarrod succumbed to his disease, #DoingItForJarrod was established in honour of the young golfer’s indominable spirit and has annually continued to raise money for Challenge. With 300 golf clubs signed to support #DoingItForJarrod this year, long-time friend, Ray Sizer says, “This year we will hope to break the Challenge record of $17,000 and thanks to local support and businesses we will be able to remember one of the most remarkable and courageous people I ever met.”

Advice for home gardeners Qfly numbers are high, now, in urban areas. Traps should be out, and netting should be purchased or repaired from last season for use just before fruit starts to ripen. An alternative to netting is for local groups of home gardeners to apply fruit fly baits to their yards every two to three weeks and stagger the date of baiting so that there are weekly baiting events across these groups. Any crop that is ripening or ripe now is a Qfly target within most urban and built-up township areas of the Goulburn Murray Valley.
THE REMARKABLE JARROD LYLE... Inspiring many to give to children with cancer thisday.#DoingItForJarrodPhoto:RaySizer By Natasha Fujimoto SIMPLY, teachers mould the future through the education of our children, and beyond academic instruction, these often-self-less professionals cultivate student wellbeing, inspire creativity and coach physical health through sport. Fruit fly activity to look out for August weather forecasts of higher than average temperatures are likely in the Goulburn Murray Valley and have the potential to lead to earlier fruit fly activity than usual. The warmer weather will see adult flies begin to wake up from their winter down-time and become more active. Evergreen trees such as lemon and loquat trees are favoured winter refuges and require extra attention. At this time of the year fruit flies are likely to have used most of their energy reserves to have survived the winter months. Fruit flies will be on the look out for carbohydrates from nectar and protein from yeasts, fungi and bacteria growing on branches.

Weather outlooks Weather outlooks are reporting that eastern and south-eastern Australia are entering a La Nina event – as we had in mid-2019 to early 2020. ON Yorta Yorta country, the Shepparton Art Museum unveiled its seventh iteration of the prestigious Indigenous Ceramic Awards (ICA) on Saturday, August 13. Reflecting the diverse geographical and cultural locations of the artists, the artworks range in form and technique from the traditional to the experimental. For Belinda Briggs, Indigenous curator at SAM, it is the unique identity of the artists, informed by connection to country and story, that resonate in the pieces, as she says, “It is really beautiful and great to see artists moving deeper into their practice around thinking about the material and where they come from and what that means for them, especially when they’re thinking about country and home and who they are – their identities and connections. In many ways the works are self-portraits.”

Shepparton detectives are appealing for information after a man was knocked unconscious and assaulted in Shepparton in July. Police were told the victim was approached by two females before the assault, at the intersection of Midland Hwy and Fryers Street, who engaged in conversation on Saturday, July 23, about 1am. Following the interaction, the 42-year-old man continued walking along the Midland Hwy before it is believed he was hit over the head with an unknown object and knocked unconscious. The victim regained consciousness in a nearby bushland before he was allegedly seriously assaulted by a woman and two men. It is alleged a woman made demands for the man’s phone and credit card. The victim was able to break free and make his way to the local police to report the incident. A woman and teenage boy have been charged, but police are still trying to identify another man believed to be involved. A computer-generated image has been released of the man in the hope it will assist the investigation. He is described as Caucasian, approximately 40-50 years old, with brown eyes, a small build, dark hair and dark greying facial hair.

PRACTICE PEACE Dear Editor, I AM a Muslim living in Shepparton. I heard the news of the attack on British anti-Muslim author Mr Salman Rushdie in New York, and I must call on all Muslim leadership to condemn this attack and come out strong and advise all Muslim communities in Australia that there is no such thing as "punishment of blasphemy" in ItIslam.isan un-Islamic thought and it seems it has unfortunately become rooted amongst some Muslim communities in the last century or so, that if someone insults Islam or Holy Prophet of Islam, then Muslims must punish such a person - but seldom do they know that it is wrong, unjust and un-Islamic - and it is high time that Muslim leadership comes out strongly and declares that there is no such thing as "punishment of blasphemy" in Islam. I am a Muslim myself and I don't like and agree with Mr Rushdie and whatever he has written about my beloved Prophet, peace be upon him, but that doesn't mean I have any right to attack him, his property or his life. I condemn this attack in strongest possible manner.

NEWS The Adviser. Australia No.1:1624 Wednesday, August 17, 2022 – Page 11 HELP inform the next stages of the Welsford Street upgrade. Council is set to continue works to cater for Welsford Street’s busy role as a north-south arterial road, which seeks to improve traffic flow, safety and amenity for vehicles and pedestrians.
Stantec Australia will prepare concept designs for the upgrade’s last stages, Stages 5 and 6, to upgrade the road south of the Fryers Street intersection of Wyndham and Sobraon Streets. Any concept design will improve safety along Welsford Street, while improving road capacity and access to Victoria Park Lake via Tom Collins Drive. “Council will undertake pre-draft consultation with stakeholders and landowners along Welsford Street to identify all issues and opportunities involved in upgrading,” said Council’s director of sustainable development, Geraldine Christou.
Stage 4 received funding from the Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, which will fund 50 percent of the expected $2.89M cost of the project. Construction is expected to begin in late 2022 and should take three to four months to complete.
Pre-construction of Stage 4 began recently, which will see the intersections at Fryers/Welsford Streets and Fryers/Marungi Streets reconfigured to improve traffic flow.

THERE are five community and Neighbourhood Houses in the Greater Shepparton electorate and each one is an engine that builds and supports community. Community Neighbourhood Houses provide a meeting place for people of all ages and backgrounds. THE words slip from Layla’s mouth as beautifully and as intently as her written word. Layla O’Callaghan is a 17-year-old from Goulburn Valley Grammar school and is this year’s Youth, Furphy Literary Award winner for her short story, Taliban. It is indeed a remarkable piece, written with such acuity and imagery, the reader is transported immediately to the horror of Afghanistan one year ago, as the Taliban retook the country. When asked why she chose such a subject to write about, Layla replied, “Watching it was just so different from my reality and it struck me how lucky I was.” As the world watched the heinous events unfold, Layla wrote about it, in order to better comprehend it, “I guess it sounds cliché, but I use writing to process my emotions.”
By Natasha Fujimoto
Listening intently to Layla, Lila Plunkett nods knowingly at Layla’s sage words. Lila is another talented writer from GVGS, winning the Junior short story category, at the same awards, for her remarkable tale, Colour. Colour is a suspenseful narrative that depicts the plight of the Klein family as they flee through a dark tunnel, under the Berlin wall. When asked, how she felt when she read her completed story, Lila replied, “It’s sometimes amazing to see what is in your head come to life on the page and then to be able to share it with other people, it’s amazing!”

FOR the first time in two years, the annual Dungala Kaiela Oration (DKO) is again presented on Yorta Yorta Country, at the Rumbalara Football Netball Club in North Shepparton this month. The orations celebrate First Nations' cultural identity and seek to foster a shared vision for all people of the Goulburn Murray region, building important bridges to promote Indigenous education, social and economic development. ECHUCA V SHEPPARTON UNITED Echuca will continue to fine tune ahead of its quest to claim the 2022 GVL premiership. Co-coaches Andrew Walker and Simon Maddox will be reminding the group to not get ahead of themselves and to stick to the game plan. These games are equally as important as the ones they will play on the way to hopefully qualifying for the September 25 decider. United is looking to get some positives out of the game as it also has an eye towards setting themselves up for 2023. Skipper Kyle Clarke has done an outstanding job leading this very young group. He will be hoping the likes of Sheldon Bogdan, Kaedyn Napier, Liam Serra and Harry Smith can continue their good form while Shane Sali should return after a one week ban to provide some leadership and experience to the backline. Liam Tenace, Daniel Willis, Jackson Stewart, Jack Evans and Logan Prout were the solid contributors in the big win over Shepparton last weekend. With the likes of Jack McHale, Sam Reid and Walker, then the Murray Bombers win comfortably. Tip: Echuca.

SHEPPARTON V BENALLA Shepparton and Benalla are looking to end their seasons on a high when they clash in the final Sunday home and away match of the season. The Bears are four points and percentage clear of the Saints. That said, the Saints will come to Deakin Reserve knowing they have already beaten Shepparton this year. But it will need the likes of Christopher Welsh, Chris Bamford, Jake Pallpratt, Will O’Donoghue and Jarrod Waite to get going for the visitors to get the chocolates in this contest. Jordan McGregor, Rhiley Lau, Jed Warrin, Miles Rowlands and Tyler Larkin will be doing their best to guide the Bears to the win. Tip: Shepparton.
MANSFIELD V KYABRAM Kyabram has a huge challenge on its hands in the High Country to take on second-place Mansfield. The reigning premier is sixth on the ladder – four points and percentage clear of Seymour. Coach Paul Newman knows there is work to do to qualify for the finals, starting against the Eagles. Their earlier meeting went in the favour of the Eagles and coach Chad Owens will be looking to his team doing the double over the visiting Bombers. That will not be easy task especially with Lachlan Smith. Smith celebrated his milestone game with the Bombers with a personal best of 11 goals in the win over his former club. If he can continue that form and get support from Jason Morgan, Zachary Keogh, Anthony DePasquale, Kaine Herbert and the returning Kyle Mueller, then the Bombers will fancy their chances. But if the likes of Tom McDonagh, Jack Hutchins, Ross Brown, Cameron Arnold, Tom Dunstan and skipper Brett Mahoney can dictate the contest and tempo, the Eagles should get the points to consolidate their place in the top two. Tip: Mansfield.
Seymour know what’s ahead when it welcomes Tatura to Kings Park. The Dogs produced arguably their best win of the season in front of the 1972 and 2012 premiership winning teams to get past the Shepparton Swans for their third win. Chris Ryan, Mitchell Elliott, Billy Cooper, Tom Sullivan and Comanche Walls lead the way in the win. Michael Hartley, Joshua Alford, Dylan Scopel, Jack Murphy and Jordan Angus were outstanding in the win over archrival Euroa in the first half of the split round. If they can continue that good form, the Lions should have a strong win and they may only be percentage outside the top six heading into R18. Tip: Seymour. EUROA V MOOROOPNA This is going to be an intriguing match-up for a variety of reasons. Both are looking to bounce back from losses in R16. The Pies suffered a narrow loss to Seymour, meaning they dropped out of the top two while the Cats fell by 14 points to Mansfield. The Cats are not safe yet – they need to win one of their last two games to be assured of their first finals appearance since 2013. Andrew Smith, William McIntosh, Jayden Gleeson, Jack Hellier and Max Gleeson will be doing their best to ensure the Cats don’t get the win they need to secure a spot in September. Ben Hicks, Oscar Lear-Camci, Christopher Nield, Ethan Hunt and Liam Betson will be doing their best to try and lift the visitors into the finals. If they can match the Pies around the stoppages and contest, then they are a chance, but my fear is the bigger bodies of the home team could prove decisive. Tip: Mooroopna.
SHEPPARTON SWANS V ROCHESTER Rochester seeks to continue its strong finish to the Home and Away season to qualify for the finals. Coach Steven Stroobants knows this is a danger game if his team is 10 percent off its game. He will be reminding the boys what the Swans did a few weeks ago against another top six contender. The Tigers were brutal in dismantling the bottom-of-the-table Shepparton United. If they bring that to this game and the likes of Hugh Hamilton (seven goals), Jacob Atley, James McPhee, Nathan Kay, and Daniel Russell continue their strong form, they will be in good stead to win. On another positive, the Tigers had nine different goal-kickers in the big win over the Demons which may stretch the young Swan defenders. Bryden Squire, Isaiah Jones, Mason Pedretti, Will Dwyer and Kurtis Dixon will be looking to lead the way for the Swans but in the end, I think the Tigers have too much on the line to drop the four points.
