Chronic housing shortage for flood victims

WHILE the flood clean-up at local facilities and public spaces continues, there are still residents displaced by the October floods in dire need of suitable housing.

Mooroopna resident Rebecca found herself without a home, after living in the same house for over 20 years and is still without answers or a solution for her situation.

Where it all began

THE books we enjoy as children go on to represent fond memories of growing up, learning to read and discovering the magic of storytelling.

Animalia, Magic Beach and Just Tricking were school library staples for millennials, many of which now have their own children.

An exhibition coming to the Shepparton Library from January 19 to February 23 will showcase the career beginnings of Graeme Base, Andy Griffiths and Alison Lester, amongst others.

The exhibition, titled Juvenilia , will display works created by these and other notable Australian children’s authors and illustrators when they were young. Curated by Aimee Chan, this exhibition showcases the juvenilia of Australian children’s authors and illustrators and their early attempts at storytelling.

Even the most prominent creators of children’s books started as children, dreaming about telling their story through word or art and maybe one day publishing them to share with the world. The works in this collection have kindly been lent for display by their makers, who all want this generation of dreamers to know that

The

everyone has to start somewhere.

The Shepparton Library is the first venue Juvenilia will be seen by the public.

To celebrate, a launch is planned for 6pm on Thursday, January 19. Andy Griffiths, a major supporter of the exhibition, will speak at the launch and be available to sign books during the launch event. Entry to Juvenilia is free for viewing during regular library open hours from Friday, January 20.

TATURA... State-ofthe-art

Fire season brings new heavy tankers and compliance from Council

THE combination of recent hot weather and heavy rainfall has given rise to rapid grass growth around the region initiating the Greater Shepparton City Council to issue a clear-cut reminder to landowners to reduce fine fuels on vacant land, including long grass and weeds.

Stating that while fire breaks in rural areas assist in reducing the intensity of fire if it occurs, Council’s director of sustainable development, Geraldine Christou added, “Everyone needs to be aware of their responsibilities to maintain their properties, particularly those in areas where grass fires can quickly take hold.”

Aside from abating the risk of fire to own property as well as nearby homes, cutting and clearing fine fuels reduces the risk of snakes and prevents Council from having to issue a Notice to Comply or a Fire Prevention Notice to neglectful landowners.

As the fire danger period continues, Shepparton and Tatura CFA brigades are set

to receive new heavy tankers as a part of the final phase of the CFA rollout, which began last year, through the Victorian Government’s $126M CFA Capability Funding package.

The heavy tankers will replace single-cab tankers and allow a full crew to sit within the cabin.

CFA chief officer, Jason Heffernan said, “These new tankers are state-of-the-art firefighting vehicles.

“The heavy tankers feature a 15t crew-cab chassis with a 4,000L water tank, while their 4x4 capability and automatic transmission will help crews access fires in difficult terrain.”

The heavy tankers will be delivered to selected brigades, including Shepparton and Tatura while the full rollout will be completed by late 2023.

Vacant blocks with excessive grass and fine fuels can be reported to Council via email at council@shepparton.vic.gov.au or contact Council on 5832 9700.

Firebombers on standby

A LARGE fleet of firefighting aircraft are stationed at regional airports across northeast Victoria.

Currently at Shepparton Airport, a Firebird 327, Airbus AS350 B3 Squirrel is on site to respond to emergencies. This single engine helicopter is predominantly used for firebombing and is equipped with a 1,100L tank that can be refilled in the hover in about 45 seconds.

There are various aircraft with firefighting abilities stationed across the northeast, in Mangalore, Albury, Benalla, Mansfield, and Ovens.

The aircraft will be used by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic), Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) to respond to fires and other emergencies.

FFMVic deputy chief fire officer Aaron Kennedy said aircraft play a critical role when

responding to fires.

"On high fire danger days, as soon as the call goes out to respond, firebombing aircraft will be dispatched so we can hit fires hard and fast and keep them small," Mr Kennedy said.

“Northeast Victoria is one of the most fire prone areas in the world and this impressive aircraft fleet will work together to deliver an effective fire suppression operation.”

“Aircraft work hand-in-hand with firefighters to contain fires both on private property and public land.”

“Dispatching the aircraft with ground crews, fire trucks and bulldozers increases our ability to rapidly contain or limit the size and spread of fires.”

“This helps keep communities, and the environment, safe,” said Mr Kennedy.

Aircraft have already played a key role during the recent flood response with more than 1,800 aircraft movements since October 1,

neighbours and families with this disease. Dementia does not discriminate, people from all walks of life have been affected by this somewhat isolating diagnosis and we are working hard to garner even more local support for those facing related challenges,” said Mick.

It’s estimated that an incredible 400,000 people in Australia currently have dementia, some as young as 25. Given it affects so many people across our nation, it’s time to get the conversation flowing and remove the stigma facing such a diagnosis can incite. Kialla Lakes Blue Green Algae warning

GREATER Shepparton City Council is warning the public to avoid direct contact with water in Kialla Lakes after monitoring detected high levels of blue-green algae.

Warning signs will be positioned at major recreational areas around Kialla Lakes and will remain in place while high levels of blue-green algae are present. Kialla Lakes will not be closed to the public. It is not possible to predict how long the algae will remain at high levels.

Council recommends water users from Kialla Lakes seek an alternative water supply. You can still sightsee and enjoy other activities at Kialla Lakes that do not involve direct contact with the water.

Council recommends:

• People and pets do not enter the water

• People who come into contact with affected water should wash affected skin immediately in clean cold water

• Seeking an alternative water supply for pets

• Do not use affected water for cooking, drinking, washing or showering. Boiling the affected water will not make it safe for these purposes

• Additional information on blue green algae can be found at Goulburn-Murray Water’s blue-green algae webpage (http://www.g-mwater.com.au/bluegreenalgae-alert/) to be informed of the risks

• Blue-green algae occurs naturally in waterbodies. They contain toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Signs of algae contact are skin rashes or itchiness, sore eyes, ears and nose, or if swallowed, nausea or vomiting. Keep up to date with current blue-green algae warnings at www.gmwater.com.au/bluegreenalgae-alert or phone the GMW blue-green algae hotline on (03) 5826 3785.

Tatura pool now open following storm damage

FOLLOWING extensive damage after a “tornado-like” storm ripped through the region before Christmas, causing destruction from Tatura to Bunbartha, Tatura Pool is now back open in time for the scorching weather.

The storm caused flash flooding, shade sail and pump damage. Clean-up of the pool and grounds and reinstallation of the pumps allowed for filtration of the water, in order to return it to an appropriate quality.

During the school holidays, the facility is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6.30am - 8.30am and Monday through to Sunday from 1pm - 7pm.

TURTLES are imperative to our local ecosystem and are culturally significant to Yorta Yorta people as both a totemic protector and for some species, as a food source.

Turtles Australia and RiverConnect will present a ‘Turtle Talk’ on Friday, January 20. This fun, free and family-friendly school holidays activity will take place at Cussen Park, Tatura from 10.00am until 12.30pm.

Turtles Australia experts will talk all things turtle during this interactive activity, with some special guests of the Broadshell, Eastern Long-neck and Murray Short-necked turtle variety.

Tatura local Ava has attended various Turtle Talk sessions with her children over the years.

“Living in Tatura, in particular being close

to Cussen Park, we have seen many stray turtles trying to cross roads or wandering even further from their natural habitat,” said Ava.

“It’s great I can bring the kids along to something like this so they gain an understanding of just how important turtles are and how we can best protect them. It doesn’t hurt that they are also super cute.”

Turtles Australia focus on the preservation of Australian freshwater turtles through educating the public and conducting research about the endangered Broad Shelled turtle and the threatened Murray short necked turtle which are both found in our local waterways.

Learn how to identify turtles, their life history, threats to our local populations, and how we can help to protect these fascinating animals. To book in, please visit events. humanitix.com/turtle-talk prior to Friday January 20.

Xanadu set to wow audiences again

BRINGING together young and talented performers from across Victoria, the Initial Stages Summer Workshop is proud to present for one, sparking and spectacular matinee and evening only, the 1980s cult classic, Xanadu.

On Saturday, January 28 at Westside Performing Arts Centre, the stage will come alive with mirror ball, colour and American musical fantasy as songs made famous by Australia’s own Olivia Newton-John fill the theatre as cast members roller-skate across the stage.

The culmination of a tireless week of rehearsals and practice, the Initial Stages troupe will perform a range of polished

songs including ‘Evil Woman’ in a refined, slightly shorter version of the ever-popular musical.

Wanting to fill the gap left behind in theatre arts since the resoundingly successful Initial Stages Theatre Company ceased operation last year, director Helen Janke said this year's Summer Workshop has brought together not only previous Initial Stages members but also students who are studying theatre at a tertiary level to work backstage.

With the cast having received their scripts and songs well before the workshop week, Helen said that the vigorous and dynamic workshop, which will run from January

23-27, will also provide an opportunity for her to mentor students in stage management and directing.

Two performances of Initial Stages Summer Workshop production of Xanadu

will be held at the Westside Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, January 28 at 2pm and at 7.30pm.

Tickets are $25 and can be obtained at:bit.ly/XanaduJR

Bringing cheer to a quiet Christmas

EACH year Christmas for Those Alone (CFTA) provides a free lunch on Christmas Day to anybody who finds themselves alone or unable to share a Christmas meal with friends or family.

Christmas saw around 250 guests at the community lunch, which is held at the McIntosh Centre. CFTA president Steve Neff says this was fewer people than expected but believes this is a good thing and may indicate that many people had someone to share Christmas with.

“It was a great day where everyone enjoyed themselves. There was no transport this year, but we put that investment back into the food – guests enjoyed a

wonderful traditional Christmas lunch with roast meats, salads and vegetables.

“The committee had to do 12 months' work in three months. We had around 50 volunteers and we are so grateful to those volunteers who give up Christmas to support others. This year we had volunteers from Melbourne, one from Cobram, and a lady from Beechworth.

“Council was terrific, it has always been really supportive of Christmas for Those Alone,” said Steve.

Retired school principal Geoff Newman was a first-time volunteer who plans on returning to help next Christmas. He said CFTA, “Provides people with the opportunity to give back to community and do something to help those

who are not as fortunate as others at this special time of year.”

Covid meant that many who planned to attend were unable. To ensure no one missed out, committee members delivered Christmas lunches to those people, many of whom were senior and alone.

This also meant that nothing went to waste with all food and soft drinks being distributed to volunteers and guests.

After 15 years, Steve is stepping down from CFTA, starting with the organisation as Santa several years ago. CFTA are seeking new committee members. Anyone interested in getting involved should email CFTA@gmail. com or visit their Facebook page.

Chronic housing shortage for flood victims

REBECCA was assigned a representative from BeyondHousing but was left in the lurch when that person resigned from the organisation just before Christmas, with no successor to take on Rebecca’s case.

“Not that the initial person was overly helpful to be frank, but now there is no one to help me from BeyondHousing, they are experiencing staff shortages” Rebecca explained.

Rebecca is on the pension and lives with her infant son and two working adult children, and has two decades of perfect tenant history, but is still struggling to even find a suitable property directly through real estate agencies.

“Before the flood occurred there was already such a difficulty for many people to get a rental, now the situation has just exploded,” said Rebecca.

“I’ve applied for over 20 properties and have only heard back about two, which was to tell me I was unsuccessful.”

The emergency re-establishment payments of up to $43,850 for eligible households, whose homes were damaged or destroyed to help pay for clean-up, emergency accommodation, repairs, rebuilding and replacing essential

household items have also been mismanaged, with Rebecca being unable to apply herself as stipulated by the application process, and no case worker able to do it on her behalf.

“I'm just shocked there’s no established protocol for longterm housing after natural disasters. I am continuously offered 10-day accommodation options, but it’s not viable to uproot and move every fortnight with a young child. There are also many families who were able to secure 3-month housing solutions in October and a lot of those are expiring in the coming weeks,” said Rebecca.

“I do get a weekly phone call to ask how my emotional wellbeing is holding up from a Government body, but I don’t need emotional support, what I need is a home for my family.”

STILL WITHOUT A HOME...There are still residents displaced by the October floods in dire need of suitable housing. Mooroopna resident Rebecca found herself without a home, after living in the same house for over 20 years and is still without answers or a solution for her situation. Kickstart the new school year

A NEW year marks a fresh start for students. Having experienced stop-start terms for the past three years, parents, students and teachers are all optimistic for an uninterrupted 2023.

Shepparton Tutoring Centre owners Mark and Lindy Carnovale say many students may have fallen behind as a result, or students have maintained the same level from previous years without progressing to the level they should have attained by the end of 2022.

“Many children may start this school year behind or struggling and we want to reassure students and their parents that they are not alone, and we are here to help,” said Mark.

"2023 looks to be a better year for students knowing that schools won’t lockdown — this means continuity of learning.”

Mark urges parents to be proactive and not to wait until the end of first term to seek extra support if their child is behind.

“Help give your kids a head start in 2023,” Mark said. “We love what we do. We have great staff and a relaxed teaching environment where students feel comfortable.”

“With over 30 years of experience in tutoring, we’re expertly equipped to help your child reach their learning potential.”

Mark offers a free, no obligation assessment for primary and secondary students.

GSSC assists 318 students to take a big step-up

ONE of the biggest transitions in life is undoubtedly the step-up taken from primary school to high school.

In 2023, the Greater Shepperton Secondary College (GSSC) will welcome 318 Year 7s to its campus following a successful and extensive transition program ran in terms 3 and 4 of 2022.

Acknowledging the nerves, excitement and often daunting transition for the college’s newest students, GSSC principal, Barb O’Brien said, “We wanted to make this a special and exciting time for our incoming Year 7s...and have welcomed our Year 7s to Hawdon Street campus on a number of occasions to get them familiar

with the college, the students and our teaching and education support staff.”

Following term 3 sessions at the school which invited parents to the college to learn more about the transition program, Year 7 curriculum, bus services and neighbourhoods, subsequent sessions were also hosted for students within primary schools, culminating in a state-wide Orientation Day.

“What was great about these sessions was that we had all areas of the college represented from our leadership team to teaching staff, multicultural liaison officers and multicultural student leaders, our college captains and wider

student leadership teams, school council representatives to our Koorie educators and wellbeing staff,” Mrs O’Brien said, before adding,

A joy to see young learners grow

MANY parents are choosing to enrol their child in tutoring to give them the best chance at excelling at school. Tutoring can give teachers flexibility while supplementing their income.

Ashu Bilkhu is one such teacher, who has been tutoring at the Shepparton Kip McGrath Education Centre for the past six years. Many tutors still teach in schools but also help kids on some afternoons.

Ashu says the most rewarding part of the role is watching students improve every week.

“I’ve never seen any student who wouldn’t improve usually within one or two terms. It feels great to see their results going up and we get heaps of positive feedback from parents about kids gaining confidence to have a go,” said Ashu.

Tutors deliver sessions on numeracy and literacy to students from prep to Year 10, with limited spots for VCE students. Students each see a specific tutor every week, under whose guidance the students work on their own custom-made programs, which may include worksheets, skillbuilders, or extension programs.

“We start after school from 3.40pm onwards and finish

at 7 or 8pm, depending on the number of students. Usually, we work with three to four students for an hour-long session, with half students working on a laptop and the others on worksheets, and they rotate through activities all the time,” Ashu explained.

“The program itself has been developed with the input of thousands of Kip McGrath teachers over the last 40 years and focuses on where students may have gaps in their learning. Tutors have access to all the content. The programs are easy to understand and comprehensive, covering all the things you’d expect a student to learn including numeracy, spelling, comprehension, reading, and more.”

The Kip McGrath Education Centre, located on the corner of Verney and New Dookie Road, Shepparton, is seeking new tutors for English and maths lessons ahead of term one.

Qualified teachers are preferred but anyone who possesses relevant knowledge and experience are welcome to apply by emailing a cover letter and CV to shepparton@ kipmcgrath.com.au

Virtual ED treats record number of Victorians

THOUSANDS avoided visiting busy emergency departments after record demand over the Christmas and New Year period by utilising Victora’s Virtual ED (VVED).

Established as a pilot in October 2020, the service allows non-urgent patients to be virtually assessed by emergency doctors and nurses from their home or workplace – while paramedics can also link patients up for assessment on whether a trip to hospital is needed.

Premier Daniel Andrews and acting minister for health, Colin Brooks visited the VVED to thank the doctors and nurses who have supported more than 85,000 Victorians since the service was launched and expanded.

The VVED provides clinical assessments, medical advice, treatment and local referrals to other health services if required, freeing resources like emergency departments and ambulances for those who need them most.

While the VVED treats an average of

300 to 350 Victorians every day, over the holidays this skyrocketed – with more than 640 patients seen on Boxing Day alone.

Ambulance Victoria also saw record demand over the festive period – with New Year’s Day being AV’s busiest day on record, responding to more than 2,300 emergency incidents including 1,327 Code 1 callouts.

As a virtual service, the VVED offers a flexible work model – allowing it to respond to high demand as doctors and nurses log on for shifts from right around the state.

While the service was able to deliver expert care to all Victorians who needed it, feedback from doctors and nurses shows a significant number of patients accessed the VVED over this period because they couldn’t get into a local GP with reduced holiday hours – or, with bulk-billing doctors now few and far between, the cost was too high.

Promoting mental health with The Men’s Table

FOR 12 years, The Men’s Table organisation has welcomed men of all ages to join its monthly, informal dinners across Victoria to engage with peers in a safe space to chat about their lives and feelings in promotion of greater mental health and wellbeing.

A dedicated charity, The Men’s Table creates groups of up to 12 men who meet for dinner monthly, building fellowship as well as a sense of belonging while sharing the highs and lows of day-to-day life in a non-judgemental environment.

Men’s Tables, regional organiser Dan Ball said, “As men we are told to toughen up from a young age and that "boys don't cry", but the tide is turning, and we are realising as a society it takes strength to be vulnerable.

“The Men's Table gives men that space, in a confidential setting with no judgment. In my personal experience, it is an environment of acceptance, where it is not only ok to be vulnerable, but it is encouraged.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING HUB?

The new Mental Health & Wellbeing Hub in the Goulburn Valley provides mental health and wellbeing services and support to people of all ages. The pandemic and other recent natural disasters such as bushfires, drought and flood, have affected everyone in different ways and it is important to take care of your mental health and know that help is available near you.

If you are having a difficult time or feeling overwhelmed, you can access free and flexible support via a community Mental Health & Wellbeing Hub.

WHO CAN USE THE SERVICES?

People of all ages with new or existing mental health challenges can utilise services at a Hub. Services are also available to family members and carers. Referrals can be informal and all services are free of charge.

You can access support where and when it suits you. You can visit a Hub in person, have someone visit you at home, meet in a cafe or park, or chat over the phone. Call 5822 8600 to make an appointment.

Now with over 50 Men’s Tables successfully established throughout Victoria, Shepparton is set to begin its very own group with an ‘Entrée’ launch on Tuesday, February 21.

The opening event will showcase how the peer supported dinners are set up as well as share the powerful benefits of groups such as these in supporting men’s mental health.

Having established and supported many

“We hear everything from marriages to divorces, births of new children to bereavements, redundancies to new jobs, challenges and happiness. The Men's Table is a place to share it and feel more connected to our community," Dan said.

To see if you would like to join a monthly table, you can come along to The Termi on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:30, with bookings essential at www.events. humanitix.com/shepparton-men-s-tableentree-tuesday-21st-february-2023

Now is the time to rejuvenate your muscles and confidence

THERE is perhaps no better time to address your physical health as well as your emotional wellbeing and confidence than in the new year.

RESIDENTS are being warned of a current and active risk of contracting potentially lethal viruses from mosquitoes, such as Japanese encephalitis and Murray Valley encephalitis.

“It has been a big year for mozzies, which is not surprising given the floods. Japanese encephalitis was not previously detected in this region previously, however, there were some human cases detected last year,” explained Dr William Cross, clinical director for the GV Public Health Unit.

He said that while vaccine programs have been successful in Victoria and New South Wales, but prevention is the best practice.

“Unlike Japanese encephalitis, there's no effective vaccine for Murray Valley encephalitis and that’s why it’s important to take precautions not to be bitten.

“Also, mozzies can spread a lot of common viruses that aren’t encephalitis but that that can make you very sick, such as Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus, which are common to the area,” said Dr Cross.

He provided the following advice for keeping yourself and your family safe:

• Mozzies can bite through tight clothing. Cover up, wear long, loose-fitting clothing

• Use mosquito repellents containing Picaridin or DEET

• Limit outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are about, particularly at dawn and dusk

• Remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed

• Make sure your home or accomodation is fitted with mosquito netting or screens.

• Don’t forget dependents, such as kids – always check the insect repellent label. On babies, you might need to spray or rub repellent on their clothes instead of their skin. Avoid applying repellent to the hands of babies or young children.

King of the road with Gold

Myles Higgins a cycling champion

“Every year I notice I get a little bit slower, that’s to be expected with ageing,” said Myles, who turns 78 at the end of the year, “You have to make the most of what you have though.”

Cycling and mountain bike riding has been a huge part of his life. Myles met his wife Heather at a cycling championship in Russia before the fall of the Soviet Union.

Together, they have competed and travelled the country on bikes. Undertaking large adventures such as Adelaide to Perth, Shepparton to Broken Hill, Cairns to the tip of Cape York, and several tours to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor.

“It’s the best way to see the country,” said Myles. “You can see it, smell it, hear it, and feel it – the whole countryside all around you.”

Myles continues to train five days a week and regularly competes.

In September, Greater Shepparton will host the 2023 Junior and Masters National Road Championships, which anticipates more than 800 riders for the Junior (Under 15

and U17s), and Masters (ages 30+) contests.

Greater Shepparton has previously hosted the Junior event in 2011 and 2015, and it is the first time the Masters National Road Race event has come to our region.

The Shepparton Cycling Club, who train at the Shepparton

Velodrome on Tuesday nights, is open to anybody who is interested in cycling competitively or leisurely. New riders and all skill levels are always welcome.

Local sports groups “want to go home”

WORKS to improve Princess Park after it was inundated by floodwater last year are underway, with the oval and cricket pitch being watered and replanted by Greater Shepparton City Council.

Shepparton Swans Football and Netball Club president, Jarrod Sutherland says that they anticipate the oval to be fit to play on by Round 1, held on Easter weekend.

“There was a lot of damage to our rooms, and they are currently stripped out. We’re still waiting on news about the insurance assessment and unsure what the pay-out will be like.

“The AFL has come to our aid and will supply portable change rooms that we can use for the next two years at Princess Park,” said Jarrod.

AFL has also provided Shepparton Swans FNC with around $30,000 towards flood recovery and a grant of $35,000 for goal post nets. Greater Shepparton City Council has said it will resurface the netball courts ahead of the 2023 season.

Pre-season training, which kicked off this week, is being held at Rumbalara and Congupna Football clubs.

Also impacted by the flood event, Shepparton and Youth Club United Cricket

Club (SYCCUCC) have been training at St Brendan’s Primary School and Central Park while their facilities are being repaired.

“We are keen to get back to some normality and we hope to go home and get back to training at Princess Park in the next few weeks,” said SYCCUCC president, Steven Tate.

“Council is doing everything it possibly can to get the grounds up to scratch,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the floods couldn’t have come at a worst time. Princess Park user groups were desperate for an overhaul before October. Funding beyond Council will be required to rebuild the facilities to be fit-for-purpose.”

Five years ago, Council created the Princess Park Masterplan, which would see a multipurpose building for the precinct’s user groups but the impact of Covid and the floods has seen costs increase, while equally limiting sporting clubs’ ability to operate.

SYCCUCC has organised a cash raffle to help raise funds for the club’s recovery. First prize is $3,000 and will be drawn February 25. Donations are welcome anytime. For more information, head to www.sheppartonyouthclubunitedcc.com.au/ product-page
