MUCH lauded for its unique, multicultural profile, Greater Shepparton is one of Australia’s most ethnically diverse regional centres in the country.
While ethnic diversity has brought both
economic growth and as well as cultural vibrancy to the region for well over 100 years, migration continues to be as strong as ever today, further diversifying and enriching our collective, cultural tapestry.
With flourishing cultural diversity,
however, there is always work to be done in forging new and ever-stronger relationships between groups, agencies, levels of government and between religious institutions. Continued Page 4

Time is running out to collect free paddock tree guards
PRIVATE landholders with farms in the Goulburn Broken catchment have until June 30, or until supply runs out to receive up to three, free paddock tree guards from Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (CMA).
Landholders can receive the 1.8 metre purpose-built mesh guards designed to protect vulnerable saplings, either naturally regenerating or planted tubestock, from stock and wildlife.
The guards need to be used for Indigenous trees only.
The tree guards are available through the Goulburn Broken CMA ‘On Your Guard’ program which is part of the Australian Government’s National Landcare Linking Landscapes and Communities project that works with landowners, communities and Traditional Owners to protect and enhance
the region’s grey box grassy woodland environment.
Goulburn Broken CMA project officer, Janice Mentiplay-Smith, said the program was very popular, with around 740 paddock tree guards distributed since the beginning of the project, five years ago.
“Under the project, landholders have done some fantastic work planting trees, controlling pest plants and animals and installing fencing to protect vegetation on their properties,” Ms Mentiplay-Smith said.
“However, not all actions need to be expensive, big or complex to be effective for biodiversity and agriculture.
“An often overlooked yet vitally important piece of our landscape are the paddock trees that dot our paddocks and provide important shade and shelter for stock and stepping stones for wildlife to
safely move through the landscape.” Landholders need to contact Janice Mentiplay-Smith on 0418316169 or email janicem@gbcma.vic.gov.au This project is

How Shepparton steps up to extend a mate a hand
By Natasha Fujimoto
WITH the double whammy of interest rate rises and inflation taking its toll across the community, food relief agencies are responding to an increase in demand.
As lower to middle income families are particularly hit with mortgage stress, local food relief service FoodShare chairman, Jeremy Rensford said that he has never witnessed such a demand for relief before.
Partnering with supermarkets, businesses and other food rescue agencies, FoodShare redistributes fresh and nutritious food to those in need via 128 registered agencies including local emergency relief agencies, community centres, charities, churches and schools, which provide invaluable breakfast programs to hundreds of kids per week.
Since October last year, Jeremy said that FoodShare has registered nine additional agencies as a consequence of the increase in demand, while daily orders have also risen.
Wishing for a world where organisations such as FoodShare were irrelevant, Jeremy said that with many first-time seekers stepping
forward for relief, it was crucial to remember the very Australian ethos of extending a mate a hand, without need or fear of stigma when it was somebody’s ‘turn’ to seek help.
Knowing only too well Greater Shepparton’s generous capacity to step up and contribute, Jeremy said that there are many ways for individuals, groups and businesses to offer support.
Community houses, and registered food relief such as FoodShare run on both the generosity of volunteers and donations, while in addition, Council provides a registry for individuals keen to support the community with their time and expertise.
Effusive about the ability of local groups, clubs and businesses to raise money in support of relief agencies, Jeremy recommended first time relief seekers call Family and Financial Services or to head into a local community centre to get the ball rolling today.
Local group make sanitary items for across the globe
By Stephanie Holliday
ONCE a month, Brad Doherty kindly donates space in his store, Shepparton Sewing Centre, to a group working towards a brilliant cause. Access to sanitary items is something that many of us take for granted, but a group of locals are tackling this issue head-on by picking up a sewing machine and making a range of women’s sanitary items that are being donated to women both locally, around Australia and across the globe.
So far, Days for Girls internationally has impacted the lives of 2.8M women and girls in 150 countries - and counting. The Goulburn Valley branch of ‘Days For Girls’ consists of 15 women who kindly donate their time and sewing expertise to the important cause.
The specialised kits include homemade shields with a waterproof inside, liners and bags as well as underwear, a face cloth, travel soap and instructions on how to use the items. The materials used to make these items are imperative to how they function, with stringent requirements. Therefore, monetary donations rather than fabric is required to help these kits reach those who need them most.
Goulburn Valley Days for Girls Team Leader, Mary Connelly-Gale explained how important the correct materials are.
“There are many factors to consider. The fabric can’t be light as it will show staining, it can’t have animals or faces on it as it may offend some cultures, it has to be 100 percent cotton. There’s a lot of thought that goes into the production of these items,” she said.
“It’s not just third world countries that need these items. We have provided kits to homeless
and refugee women locally, and other teams provide kits in remote communities. The 25 kits we are currently working on at the Shepparton Sewing Centre are destined for Papua New Guinea, unless we identify there’s local need. It’s an extremely rewarding thing to be able to be involved in. We are always seeking more volunteers.”
The group meets on the third Saturday of the month at St Mary's Hall, 74 Hogan Street, Tatura and the third Monday of the Month at Shepparton Sewing Centre.
"Brad's initiative of offering community sewing days is a fantastic way for people who like to sew to get involved with a cause without having to become a formal member of a club."
There are also other community sewing projects to get involved with and people can check with their local community centres.
To get involved, call Mary on 0484 332 397 or email her at goulburnvalleyvic@ daysforgirls.org.
RESTORING DIGNITY
ACROSS THE GLOBE... Days for Girls provides washable feminine hygiene kits to girls and women that would otherwise go without, both locally and overseas. Goulburn Valley Days for Girls Team Leader, Mary Connelly-Gale, with one of 25 kits the local branch is currently working on.

Where have all the swimming instructors gone?
By Natasha Fujimoto
TEACHING children to swim is a necessity, however, with a nationwide shortage in swim instructors, it has never been more difficult to enrol a child.
With the announcement from Aquamoves last week that 390 students no longer have swimming lessons due to instructor scarcity, the question must be asked, why are there so few instructors?
With Covid and last year's floods taking its toll, resulting in recurrent and lengthy pool closures, aquatics manager at Aquamoves, Liliana Angeles Garcia said instructors were left without consistent or reliable income as a result.
Stating that she had never met an instructor who didn’t find the role rewarding, Liliana acknowledged that it was no easy feat to become an instructor.
Compared to a pool lifeguard, which takes two days of paid training, acquiring a swim instructor license takes up to 20 hours of unpaid training.
In addition, trainees must pay hundreds of dollars including course fees, working with children checks and in CPR accreditation before earning a single dollar.
In addition, Liliana said there is also up to a month’s wait time before a licensed instructor can jump in a pool with a job.
Despite the Hunter Boyle Foundation
ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING JOBS... is to be a swimming instructor, however, as Aquamoves aquatics manager, Liliana Angeles Garcia (pictured) explains becoming an instructor is both costly and time consuming, and with the recurrent closures to the pool due to Covid and flood, many dedicated instructors have had to find employment elsewhere out of necessity. Photo: The Adviser
drawing an unprecedented 40 candidates in its second round of scholarships for trainees, Liliana said the funding was only able to accommodate five instructors.
Nevertheless, with all factors considered, Liliana acknowledged, “To be a swimming instructor is truly one of the most rewarding jobs; you give children the
ability to go on holidays and be safe and happy.
“I see swimming instructors that cry with joy when they see a student put their head under the water for the first time.
“So, jump in and try it, you won’t regret it, we have many shifts available.”
Sharing a meal to promote connection Community brought together in the spirit of Ramadan

CULTURE & CO is a social enterprise innovated by Mohammed Yassin, dedicated to delivering cultural training and consulting services to government agencies and service providers.
Advocating the belief that cultural celebrations can be vehicles for bringing people together and creating spaces for human connections, Culture &
Co proudly presented a Iftar event at the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) on Tuesday, April 18.
Bringing together more than 120 people representing faith and cultural communities, service providers, government agencies and political offices, a meal was shared in the spirit of Ramadan. Share a meal, make a connection, and build partnerships, was the theme
of the Iftar event and was a resounding success, with Mr Yassin hoping to orchestrate an even bigger event next year.
With most of Shepparton’s four Islamic mosques represented at the event, Mr Yassin thanked sponsors, including the Ethnic Council, La Trobe University, Greater Shepparton City Council, SAM and many more.
“It was great to have Kim O’Keeffe, Sam Birrell and
mayor, Cr Shane Sali joining us, and a big thank you to Hakan Akyol PSM and Sarmed Yassin. “Thanks, must also be given to Mustafa Abbasi for his inspiring speech and to Camille El Feghali who made the night come to life with his amazing Islamic music performance on the Qanoon and the Nay. I would also like to thank Donna Baldwin, for her support throughout the night,” Mr Yassin said.

Guy Fawkes-esque cracker night lights up the sky and delights residents
Goulburn Weir Walkway closed for maintenance works
By Deanne Jeffers FOR RESIDENTS at Moyola Lodge in Tatura,
memories of cracker nights or Guy Fawkes Nights are still some of their fondest.
Maree Chester is a nurse at Moyola and hearing them reminisce over these memories, she decided to arrange an old-fashioned cracker night for the community.
“It’s such a fun night, and since the first one three years ago, residents have continued to talk about their love of Guy Fawkes Night, and also now about how much they loved and look forward to our cracker night,” said Maree.
Daylight savings coupled with mild temperature on Tuesday, April 18 made for a spectacular evening of fireworks, crackers, and toasted marshmallows, with around 70 people from all generations attending.
Maree engaged local pyro-technician Shane Armstrong from Kyabram’s Mr Candy Sky to kick of the inaugural event three years ago. In addition to taking care of paperwork, legal and safety necessities, Shane built a purposebuilt table where residents could be part of the fun and safely light crackers.
About 20 residents attended at Sacred Heart School oval, located close to Moyola. Those
that were able approached the table and lit a cracker, while others were invited to press a controller that sent large fireworks into the sky.
“There were some residents that were worried they couldn’t make it because of mobility issues, but I assured them, we would get you there and back safely, and we did. Everyone gets to be part of it,” said Maree.
Staff at Moyola helped residents travel to and from the school and with toasting marshmallows. Many residents were joined by family members and were delighted to see children enjoying the show.
The whole evening cost a gold coin donation. This year's event saw the welcome addition of a flaming ‘Moyola’ sign, that received applause from the crowd, and two Catherine wheel fireworks made especially for the residents who remembered them fondly from their memories.
Maree said, “They deserve some special treats, and the community does as well. Bringing everyone together for some fireworks exposes the community to aged care in a welcoming way, doing something they can all enjoy together.”
PUBLIC access to the walkway over
Goulburn Weir will be closed while inspections and maintenance works are carried out on the structure.
Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) storage operations south manager Paul Beard, said that Goulburn Weir is an essential asset for the Northern Victoria community, and proactive maintenance works are regularly undertaken to ensure its long-term integrity.
While the reserve next to the weir will remain open, the closure of the walkway means that visitors will need to park at the Goulburn Weir Road carpark to access the playground.
The closure is effective immediately, and signs will be placed at each end of the weir to notify the public.
For updates on the closure, people can visit https://www.g-mwater.com.au/ goulburn-weir.

BUDGET LOOMS AMIDST DEBT CRISIS
Dear Editor, OVER the next six weeks, Victorians need to brace for a horror show that will be the Andrews Labor Government’s State Budget.
The Premier and Treasurer have been tempering our expectations, finally acknowledging the presence of Victoria’s record state debt.
Despite Premier Andrews promising no new taxes on live TV in 2014, Labor has since slapped Victorians with 44 new taxes. It is very likely more taxes are set to be introduced in the May State Budget.
Victorians are paying a staggering $10M every day to simply service Labor’s debt. That’s enough to resurface 10 kilometres of road every day, or to resurface the entire Calder Freeway between Melbourne and Bendigo every six months.
The reported axing of 10 percent of the public service shows that Labor is desperate to cut costs. Treasurer Tim Pallas himself has said this will have a massive impact on key services, but they’ll charge ahead with 5,000 job cuts anyway. That could mean fewer nurses in a health system already in crisis, and fewer teachers in our classrooms.
The carnage won’t end there.
Labor is already struggling to pay invoices to businesses that helped with the flood response, road maintenance funding is likely to be cut further and community support grants are set to be scrapped entirely.
Only time will tell how Daniel Andrews will try dig himself out of this Labor-made crisis, but make no mistake, it will be Victorians who will pay for it.
Peter Walsh MP Leader of The Nationals
NATIONAL RECONSTRUCTION FUND KNOCKED BACK
ON 28 March the Senate passed the National Reconstruction Fund, a key election commitment of the Albanese Labor Government.
This $15B fund is all about revitalising Australian industry so we can be a country that makes things again. It represents one of Australia’s biggest investments in manufacturing in living memory.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we all saw how our over-reliance on international supply chains left us exposed to disruptions outside of our control.
But the Australian workers and businesses who stepped up to provide us with the goods and services we all rely on show that there is great potential to improve our domestic capability.
The National Reconstruction Fund is all about realising this potential.
The fund will direct significant investment into regional Australia, creating jobs in agriculture, forestry, resources and other important industries.
As the Government has previously announced, $500M of targeted investment will be directed towards value-adding in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, food and fibre.
I was disappointed that my Liberal and Nationals colleagues voted against establishing the fund.
It is exactly the sort of policy that regional politicians should support: the Government stepping in to ensure Australians in rural and remote areas benefit from the nationbuilding activities and industry development that too often favours big cities.
But the Nationals voted with the Liberals against the bill. With each passing week it becomes clearer that the Coalition opposes policies not because they think they are bad ideas,
but because Labor came up with them.
There are seven priority investment areas for the National Reconstruction Fund, ensuring that we are improving our sovereign capability in essential supply chains. The areas have been selected to strategically drive economic development in our regions and outer suburbs, diversify the nation’s economy and create secure jobs.
One of these areas is defence capability. By maximising sourcing requirements from Australian suppliers employing Australian workers, we can ensure our own country plays more of a role in our defence supply chain.
The National Reconstruction Fund recognises that the forestry industry will be key to our low emissions future. By providing investment for value-add in forestry, we can ensure that demand for timber products – which we know must necessarily rise if we are going to meet our climate goals – can be met with Australian goods.
Value-adding activities in agriculture will also be eligible for investment through the National Reconstruction Fund, ensuring that Australian workers and businesses play a significant role in more steps in the agriculture supply chain.
I am proud that Federal Labor is delivering on its election commitments and delivering for regional Australia.
Senator Raff Ciccone
Federal Labor Senator for Victoria, Deputy Government Whip in the Senate and Chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee.

Council reveals draft budget, proposing maximum rate rise
Regional funding grinds to a halt
When you change government, you also change priorities.
The Nationals are the only party solely focussed on regional Australia and the gulf between our priorities and the Albanese Government couldn’t be wider.
Labor was quick to scrap dedicated pools of regional funding that were hard won by the Nationals, promising a fairer, more transparent system for supporting regional communities. What they have delivered from these new schemes is zero dollars for the regions. No guidelines, no grant rounds, no funding released.
It isn’t good enough. Prior to the May budget I’ll be releasing research that shows the significant economic cost to regional Australia of the Albanese Government’s dithering.
You just need to listen to understand the impact, there are countless projects in communities across the region that are crying out for funding but still have nowhere to even apply.
All announcement and no action 12 months after the election, it is shameful.
Stronger Communities needs another round
The Stronger Communities grants programme commits $150,000 for each federal electorate for small community projects. Grants are up to a maximum of $20,000 with a maximum of 20 projects receiving funding in my electorate. Round 8, which is currently in progress, was significantly oversubscribed. My office received expressions of interest for $625,000 in grants, supporting projects worth $1 million.
This points to the urgent need for further rounds of this program. The pandemic not only wreaked havoc on community events, but it also limited normal operations and fundraising for so many organisations and clubs. In terms of overall spending, this is an inexpensive programme which efficiently delivers much needed funding quickly. We need more of it, and sooner rather than later.
Commemorating the Anzacs
Thank you for your service.
Trooper Raymond Walter Patterson was killed in action at The Nek, Gallipoli on August 7, 1915, aged 21 years. Born in the Caniambo district. He was educated at the Violet Town State- school and worked on a farm in Shepparton East. He was a member of the 15th Light Horse C squadron (Shepparton troop) and was very popular.
The son of Sarah Jane Patterson of Lightfoot St, Shepparton is listed on honour rolls throughout the district, but his final resting place is listed as “No known grave – Known Unto God”.
On Anzac Day I attended several moving services and it is important to continue to keep alive the memory of people like Trooper Patterson, who gave their lives and their futures in service of their country. Lest we forget.
THE council discussed the draft budget during their meeting on April 18, and ratepayers have until the end of May to provide feedback on the proposal.
To address concerns about the increase, councillors noted that there have been rate freezes in recent years.
Cr Geoff Dobson stated that in the first two years of their term, they implemented a zero-rate rise, and the recommended 3.5 percent increase for the third year would result in an average increase of 1.75 percent over three years.
Cr Anthony Brophy encouraged the public to provide feedback on the draft budget and the proposed rate increase.
“This really is being put out for public consultation and we really do require the public feedback before this can be adopted,” he said
He also explained that the increase was necessary due to inflation and costs
associated with the floods. Overall, the council hopes to hear from the community before making a final decision on the budget.
Mayor, Cr Shane Sali defended the proposed increase, saying that, “We have aimed to provide a budget for the community that allows us to continue completing important infrastructure upgrades across the region and continue investing into the sporting and cultural events we all know and love, like the BMX, International Dairy Week and Converge on the Goulburn."
“The 2023/2024 Draft Budget has looked at all the ways we can continue supporting our sporting groups, community clubs and local organisations to ensure the entire region is best supported for the next financial year,” he said.
Community submissions are open until 5pm on Thursday, May 18. To obtain a copy of the draft budget or for more information, visit www.greatershepparton.com.au

Delicious, nutritious family recipe for under $20
FOOD glorious food, but it is not always easy to feed a family on a tight budget.
Nevertheless, if there is one important thing Jamie Oliver has taught us, it's that good, fresh and nutritious food need not be expensive.
So, with that in mind, The Adviser has undertaken the challenge of cooking a hearty meal for a family of four for under $20 using a few staples from the pantry such as olive oil, vinegar and handful of herbs from the garden.
Method
1. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil over high heat.
2. Place chorizo and oil in a cold fry pan, then place over medium heat. Once it begins to sizzle and the fat starts to render, cook, stirring, for 6 minutes or until crisp.
3. Meanwhile add the pasta to the water and cook until al dente.
Presenting, Chorizo Carbonara
Ingredients
• 500g spaghetti $1.70
• 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
• 2 x 100g dried chorizo, finely chopped $4.55
• 1 garlic clove, crushed $2.20 (bulb)
• 1 sprig rosemary, finely chopped (from garden)
• 2/3 cup (50g) grated parmesan $4.00
• 2 tsp white vinegar 2 eggs $0.99 ($2.99 per dozen)
• 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves $2.99 (a bunch)
4. Add the garlic and rosemary to the chorizo and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant then remove from the heat.
5. Use tongs to remove pasta from the water and place into the pan of chorizo, allowing excess water to follow along with 1/3 cup water.
6. Return the water to just below a simmer. Add the vinegar then gently lower in the two
eggs using two small bowls. Poach for 2 minutes for very soft eggs.
7. Toss the pasta with half the parmesan and a little more water if needed and parsley and divide between bowls. Top with the eggs.
8. Sprinkle with extra parmesan, parsley and cracked pepper.

There’s a crisis in our country you can fix in your first budget, at no extra cost. With the stroke of a pen you could help secure the future of critical regional news services, using money already allocated in the budget.
Dear Dr Chalmers,
By email: media@premier.nsw.gov.au
All you need to do is allocate a fairer percentage of the federal government’s advertising budget to local and regional news services, rather than spending almost all of it with corporate capital city media and foreign-owned digital platforms (which don’t produce any content or employ any journalists).
Michelle Rowlands announced a campaign promise of $15m of costs that we faced at the time. Whilst this is welcomed by structural issues we face.
Dear Premier Perrottet
This can be achieved by simply adopting the Victorian Govt policy that mandates a weekly full page government advertisement in every regional and community paper.
Local and regional newspapers connect more than 80% of the country, but they get almost 0% of the government advertising spend.
By way of introduction, I am the Managing Director of Australian Community independentregional publisher. ACM has over 140 titles around the country. newspapers like the Newcastle Herald, IllawarraMercury, Wagga Daily Advertiser Leader. Additionally, we publish 47 weekly titles from the far south in Batemans also have the St.George and Sutherlands Leaders in our stable of papers. The reasonfor writing to you is to seek your support for our industry and Regionalnewspapers are the lifeblood of their towns andcities. Sadly, due to the increased cost pressures many titles in NSW have had toclose and many more
In an era where false news spreads faster on social media than the truth does, trusted local news services reach more regional Australians than any other medium. And unlike other media, every government dollar spent with a local newspaper is also an investment in regional journalism jobs.
the Premier of Victoria (see attached) with a policy that full page advertisement in every regional paper every week promise for NSW Labor that does three things: and the jobs they support valuable communications tool in the most trusted of mediums government grants. that represent another 27 publications in NSW and, together, proposed policy announcement across our respective mastheads and available to meet with you at any time to discuss this important
During the recent federal election campaign, Michelle Rowlands announced a grant funding to address the 80% rise in newsprint costs that we faced at the the industry it is a short term solution to ongoing structural issues we face.
A more meaningful solution has been enacted by the Premier of Victoria (see guarantees that the Vic state government will buy a full page advertisement in of the year.
A recent parliamentary inquiry recommended that a minimum of 20% of government print advertising should be placed with regional news services. A recent study conducted by Deakin University recommended the same thing. In fact, the Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, has been advocating for more regional newspaper advertising for many years.
This shouldn’t be controversial.
We believe a similar policy could be an election promise for NSW Labor that does -provides certainty for regional publishers and the jobs they support -provides the NSW Government with a valuable communications tool -moves away from the need for government grants.
We know there may be bigger budget issues, but this small policy change would be a simple and fair solution to a growing problem for regional Australia. A policy that ensures weekly federal government advertising is placed in regional newspapers would be great news for the country.
And it won’t cost you a cent.
Yours sincerely,

Celebrating one year with major sewing sale
IT’S already been a year since sewing machine whiz, Mr Brad Doherty, took over the reins at Shepparton Sewing Centre. This year marks his 20th year working at the store, and his first full year as the owner.
To celebrate the momentous occasion, from tomorrow April 27 through to Saturday, April 29, there will be 10 percent off storewide, excluding sewing machines. There will also be an abundance of bargain clearance items and selected fabrics priced at only $10 per metre.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their continued support. Our customers are the essence of Shepparton Sewing Centre, they are what keeps us ticking and we are forever grateful to them,” said Brad.
“To say thank you, on the sale days, we will have some birthday cake for our customers to enjoy while they
browse the bargains on offer.”
Keep an eye out for the store’s annual trade-in sale, where you can garner yourself a discount on a new machine by trading your old one in. Details about the sale

A VERY special event is coming to Rushworth, offering an exciting opportunity to seek spiritual guidance, connection and emotional healing alongside vibrant stalls, wellbeing products, gifts and entertainment.
The Rushworth Spiritual Expo is an indoor event gathering the best practitioners from regional Victoria and Albury and will include healers, mediums, crystals, tarot & oracle cards, books, candles, witchy products and tarot card readers.
Beginning at 12pm, the foremost demonstration of the day will be presented by Red Horse, an American Indian healer who offers a variety of techniques to remove negative attachment.
A door prize will be drawn at 3pm, with the lucky recipient winning a 30-minute reading from New Angel Tarot owner and event organiser, Renée Gee.
A day full of good vibes and inner
exploration, there will also be plenty of exquisite Mother’s Day gifts to choose from.
A rare and exceptional chance to engage with practitioners with singular skill, Renée said, “The Rushworth Spiritual Expo will be an event where we can come together, meet new people and most of all, receive spiritual guidance. Most people who seek out the spiritual community are wanting to reframe their current situation in order to feel less anxious, release fear and empower themselves in a new way.”
The event is on Sunday, April 30, between 10am-4pm at The Rushworth Shire Hall, 7 Horne Street, Rushworth (top of the main street). Cash only entry, $5 per person, children under 12 free.

2023/2024 Draft Budget
The 2023/2024 Draft Budget was adopted for community exhibition and feedback from Friday 21 April until Thursday 18 May 2023.
The Budget sets where Council will allocate funding for the provision of capital works and delivery of services for the next financial year.
Feedback on the Draft Budget is welcomed. The community can influence the allocation of funds for future years by making a submission to Council on what services, programs and facilities they would like to see funded.

Greater Shepparton City Council
AFTER a successful launch in 2022, Greater Shepparton City Council is excited to welcome back Illuminate Festival to the shores of Victoria Park Lake next month.
The event creates a full sensory experience incorporating lights, music and food in a way that celebrates the region and puts Greater Shepparton on the map as an abundant, dynamic and cultural capital.
“Last year an estimated 20,000 people attended across the weekend, coming from 167 different destinations right around Victoria and interstate,” said mayor, Cr Shane Sali.
“We look forward to once again delivering a unique event and welcoming back visitors to be part of the art and cultural developments of our region.”
This year's event will be staged across two nights, coming to life at 6pm on Friday, May 5 and concluding Saturday, May 6 at 10pm.
“With the event happening over two evenings, it also presents an exciting opportunity for visitors to make a weekend of it and share the magic of our region’s diversity, experiences and visitor attractions, providing an important economic boost to our local businesses and visitor economy as we continue our
recovery from the impacts of last October’s flood event,” said Cr Sali.
Illuminate will feature an awe-inspiring, mesmerising laser light show kicking off at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm and 10pm across both nights!
The full program, including the exciting music line up, will be announced in coming weeks. For more details go to the Shepparton & Goulburn Valley website: www.sheppandgv.com.au/illuminate

YOU’VE found the perfect Mother’s Day gift and written a thoughtful message in her card, but perhaps the most important gift one can give on Mother’s Day is quality time. Here are some lowcost activities you can try with Mum this year:
Plant a garden together – growing a garden is a gift that keeps on giving, and the memories you make planting seedlings and tending to plants together, and sharing the bounty, is one that you will cherish forever.
Cook a family recipe or create one of your own – delve into the old family cookbook and select a dish you can prepare and enjoy together. If your mum is known for their exceptional kitchen skills, this is an excellent opportunity to learn cooking from her and preserve it for future generations.
Visit a gallery or museum – explore the
world of arts and culture and spend the day in a gallery or museum. While you are there, you can pick out your favourite pieces and discuss these to get to know each other’s special tastes and enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat.
Have spa day at home – the day spa can be expensive, but you can treat mum to a special pampering day from your home by making DIY face masks (or buying some in store) and giving each other mani-pedis.
Go walking, hiking or bike riding – enjoy the beautiful fresh autumn weather by getting outdoors for a leisurely stroll, bike ride or longer hike with mum. Do not forget sunscreen, water and suitable shoes and clothes for walking. There are heaps of biking or walking routes around Greater Shepparton to explore that are suitable for all types of abilities.

Register to run and save lives
AUSTRALIA’S biggest fun run and walk for breast cancer research, the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic (MDC), has announced more than 70 locations nationwide where participants can celebrate, honour and raise vital funds for those impacted by breast cancer. Local events will run in Girgarre, Shepparton and for the first time, in Seymour as well.
"We are excited to announce that in 2023, the 26th year of the MDC, there will be 73 locations in major cities, metro areas and regional towns for Australians to unite nationally in support of breast cancer research,” said MDC CEO, Zara Lawless.
“And we’re thrilled to reveal there are almost 20 locations that are either joining the Mother’s Day Classic nationwide community for the first time, or re-joining us after taking a break through the disruption the last few years.”
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in Australia and sadly, nine Australians die from it every single day. Proceeds go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to fund research to improve outcomes for those affected by breast cancer.
“Over 1.5 million people have participated in the Mother’s Day Classic for breast cancer research in the past 25 years, donating $41.5 millions, and each year we are building on the success of the event,” said Ms Lawless.
The MDC supports the NBCF’s goal of zero deaths from breast cancer. Together we can improve the lives of the 57 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each day, now and into the future. Visit mothersdayclassic.com.au for more information or to register.

IDEAS FOR MUM... Mother’s Day gifts don’t have to be extravagant or expensive. A hand-made gift is often the perfect present for your mum or the mother figure in your life.
Photo: Supplied
Gifts from the heart
MOTHER’S Day gifts don’t have to be extravagant or expensive, especially given the cost of living. A hand-made gift is often the perfect present for your mum or the mother figure in your life. Here are some ideas that don’t cost a bomb:
Brownie/Cookie Jar
Fill a nice mason jar layer by layer with the dry ingredients for a brownie or cookie, write the recipe on a piece of paper and use twine to tie it to the neck of the jar. Mum will just have to add oil and eggs, and adding on a cute new wooden spoon to the gift is even better, you can never have too many.
Guided bushwalk
Taking mum on a nice bushwalk is a lovely and free gift idea. Use Google maps to find a route local to you and even look up some bird varieties and information about native plants so you can give mum some background information as you walk.
Handprints on canvas/tote bag
While lovely hand drawn pictures are always welcome, one sweet way to capture a moment in time is by simply getting everyone in your family to put a handprint on canvas so you can all look back and marvel at how little everyone’s hands were. Simply get everyone to dip their hand palm side down into a different colour of paint, press onto canvas, or a tote bag with fabric paint, leave to dry and voila!
Bookmark
DIY bookmarks are super easy to make. Cut a length of cardboard and then a piece of paper to stick on top the same size or slightly smaller so the cardboard creates a border. Decorate as you wish, a few lovely family photos cut out and stuck on will be very much appreciated, make sure of course they are photos that it’s okay to cut up first, printing them onto printer paper is even better as it ensures they will be easier to stick.

Mum’s the word
BREAKFAST in bed is a sweet gesture, flowers may be pretty and chocolate may be delicious, but they don’t last very long.

A mother loves you first, and then forever...
MOTHER’S Day, regardless of the date is celebrated around the world, and while the traditions maybe different, the sentiment is the same. Mother’s Day is the day to honour the lady who gave us life, putting her own needs behind our own, while wrapping us in unconditional love.
Being the traditional and main caregiver, most cultures set aside a special day to celebrate their mothers.
While in Australia, Mother’s Day often begins with breakfast in bed, a bouquet of flowers and homemade cards, Japanese Children present their mothers with chrysanthemums, a symbol of the sweetness and endurance of motherhood.
Awarding medals to mothers of large families after the first world war in gratitude for helping to rebuild the population, today
the traditional gift on Mother's Day is a flower-shaped cake, while in the United Kingdom, churches handout daffodils to children to give to their mums.
In India, each October, Hindus honour Durga, the goddess of mothers during a 10-day festival known as Durga Puja while in Ethiopia family flock from all over to the family home for a special meal during the Antrosht festival, which is held especially to both honour and celebrate of motherhood, following the end of the rainy season.
No matter how we acknowledge our beautiful mothers on Mother’s Day, or even if we choose to express our gratitude at other times and in other ways, it’s comforting to know that the entire world cherishes motherhood just the same.

SCORES SUBJECT TO CHANGE FOLLOWING ANZAC DAY GAMES
Football previews Round 4
SHEPPARTON V ROCHESTER
Shepparton has been competitive in all three of its defeats, showing glimpses of what they are capable of. Last weekend against Kyabram, the Bears only won one of the four quarters – the last, but by that stage, the game was Kyabram’s. For the Tigers, 2023 under new coach Ash Watson is more than wins and losses. This season is very much about the growth. They have a very young list, with some experienced heads in and around them.
Sean Williams, Blake Evans, Nate Rasmussen, Matt Kellett and Seamus Henderson will be doing their best to lead the way, but kicking a winning score could be the visitors’ biggest challenge. Tip: Shepparton
MANSFIELD V BENALLA
Mansfield will be looking to make its three wins on the bounce when it welcomes neighbour Benalla. The Eagles have just been going without setting the world on fire. They really had to battle hard to shake off the challenge of Tatura in round two and then the Swans last weekend.
Saints vice-captain, Brody Webster will lead a forward line that includes Jarrod Waite and Josh Mellington. If they can get the supply and the better of their defender, then the trio could cause some headaches for the Eagle defenders.
Tom McDonagh, Patrick Marks, Frazer Dale, Max Mahoney and Lachlan Murphy-Dale will be looking to continue their good form to ensure the likes of Ben Christopher and the forwards get the supply to kick the Eagles to victory. Tip: Mansfield.
EUROA V SHEPPARTON UNITED
Euroa will be looking to bounce back from its first loss of 2023 when it welcomes Shepparton United to Memorial Oval. The Pies were really good early in their loss to the Lions, but from quarter time onwards they were beaten to go down by 36 points. Coach Scott Rowan and his coaching group will no doubt have looked at the vision to address the areas that let them down against the Lions. Ruckman Andrew Smith was outstanding for the Pies last weekend.
Youngest, Darby Wilson did some really good things on debut and will look to continue that today. Will Hayes continues to rack of the possessions, forward Tristan Davies will be looking to kick a bag of goals and Zac Gleeson will be important for the Pies when the ball hits the ground. Mitchell Roche, Marcus Wattie, Joel Serra and gun recruit Jayden Magro will be looking to continue their fine start to 2023. For the Demons to be any chance of an upset win, then they need a contribution from everyone. Tip: Euroa.
MOOROOPNA V SEYMOUR
This promises to be a cracking contest between two premiership contenders. Both are unbeaten and it will be worth every bit of the admittance fee to watch two well-coached teams go head-to-head for early season bragging rights.
Mooroopna coach John Lamont would be the first to admit that there is still growth within his team after three arm-wrestles to open the season. He knows despite the three wins against fellow Greater Shepparton teams, that they haven’t been at their best.
The one thing that really impressed me about the Lions was their fitness. They never stopped running all day against the Pies. Riley Mason was brilliant. He kicked six goals himself but was involved in many others.
Reigning Morrison Medallist Ben Rigoni was brilliant as was Jack Murphy, Clayton Salmon and Michael Hartley was also good playing as a ruckman/forward. The Lions were really good, and they will only get stronger as they welcome back a few senior troops over the coming weeks. Tip: Seymour.
TATURA V KYABRAM
Tatura has bounced back strongly after a first up Easter Saturday bashing from Echuca while Kyabram sits at 2-1 after defeating Rochester and Shepparton in between losing to Echuca. The Bulldogs were celebrating their first win last weekend after overcoming Benalla by two goals. That win was probably set-up for the volume of work they did in the narrow loss to Mansfield in round two.
New coach Paul Barnard seems to have the Bulldogs playing a system that relies on being accountable judging from the scores against in the past fortnight. And if they can continue to defend strongly then they will be in a lot of games. Kyabram coach Paul Newman would be satisfied with their team’s start, knowing that there is still room for improvement. Ruckman, Zachary Norris will be looking to give the likes of Reuben Rode and Kaine Herbert first use to ensure the likes of Thomas Holman and the forward line can kick a winning score. Tip: Kyabram.
ECHUCA V SHEPPARTON SWANS
Is it possible for the reigning premier to get better after climbing to the top of the mountain in 2022? Echuca is three from three in its title defence and remains the team to beat. Despite last year’s win, it is very evident that the coaching panel are driving this group to keep getting better. They have started with strong wins over Tatura, Kyabram and Rochester. Some would say that two of those wins have come against teams who may not be contending for the flag in 2023. True. But it is the manner of those wins that make the Murray Bombers are a scary proposition for whoever plays them. For the visitors, utility Andrew Riordan has been outstanding as has defender, Rylen Damianopoulos.
Skipper Nathan Rachele is leading by example and the Swans will look to other youngsters, Bowen Calogero, James Auld and hopefully the returning Zac Banch to push the Murray Bombers at Victoria Park. The Swans will be hoping to regain ex-Kangaroo Jamie McMillan who was a late out in last week’s loss to Mansfield. Tip: Echuca.

GVL netball round 4 previews
by Sam Saracino
SHEPPARTON V ROCHESTER
Shepparton will be looking to continue its winning form after it accounted for Kyabram last weekend.
The Bears have won two of its three games to be well positioned going into this contest with the ever-improving Rochester Tigers. Rochester stormed home in the battle against its Campaspe Shire rival last week to just fall short by three goals after it was down by 14 goals at one point in the second half.
The Bears will look to the likes of Ella Sidebottom, defender, Ash Cann, Jacinta Todd and star shooter Kim Borger to guide them to a third win of the season. Tip: Shepparton.
MANSFIELD V BENALLA
Both teams will be desperate as they chase their first win of 2023.
The Eagles were beaten by the Shepparton Swans last start while the Saints were unable to match the visiting Tatura.
Eagles’ midcourters Darcy CroxfordDemasi and Bella Riley worked tirelessly against Swans last start, and they will be vital as the home team looks to get the win.
Benalla will turn to the likes of Kate Symes, Olivia Dalton and Jordie Wilcock to continue their good form to try and help the visitors to victory. Tip: Mansfield.
EUROA V SHEPPARTON UNITED
Euroa and Shepparton United will be desperate to return to the winners’ circle after both tasted defeat last round.
The Magpies were beaten by the reigning premier and United was defeated by Mooroopna.
Euroa will turn to Sophie Owen, Mia Sudomirski and Liv Morris to try and guide the Magpies to a third win of the season. For United, this game is very important. They are currently sitting at 1-2 and would love to square the ledger.
Unfortunately, the Demons are in re-build mode following the players that departed over summer following last year’s second place finish.
They will look to two of the competition’s brightest stars in Laura Cole and Olivia
Kirby to play above the age and experience to keep them competitive in 2023.
If these two young stars can fire and the others can come on the journey and put together four strong quarters, then anything is possible.
That said, I think the Pies win today. Tip: Euroa.
MOOROOPNA V SEYMOUR
Is the grand final preview? On form, you would say yes.
But both Di Hanslow and Ellie O’Sullivan are no fools. They both know that while a win is important, they know premierships are won in September, not April.
Maddie Wong was a star in her team’s big win over Shepparton United last weekend to ensure they remained undefeated.
Cats coach Di Hanslow would be pleased with how ruthless her team has been in the opening weeks of the season.
But she knows for that to continue, shooter Dayna Williams will need to be on song against Sarah Szczykulski and Bridie Cantwell.
Experienced mid-courter Bree Hanslow will be important for the Cats and her battle with Rosie O’Sullivan will be a beauty.
This game will come down to the team that makes the least amount of errors and can capitalise when it has the momentum. Tip: Seymour.
TATURA V KYABRAM
Tatura has jumped out of the blocks and is looking to make one its best starts to a season since its glory days of when it was contending for flags.
Coach Fiona Boyer has been very strategic with her summer recruiting and so far, her team hasn’t disappointed to be 3 from 3.
But she knows the tough games are going to come.
That said, it is important to bank the wins early to give you that confidence and momentum.
She will turn to shooter Jasmine Fraser, defender and former coach Molly Boyle and her daughter, Elise Boyer in the mid-court to lead the way.
Jada Richardson, Hollie Reid and Elivia
2023 Australian Country Championships coming to Shepparton
HOCKEY Australia are pleased to advise that the 2023 Australian Country Championships will be held in Shepparton later this year.
The Goulburn Regional Hockey Centre in NSW was originally scheduled to welcome the country’s best regional hockey talent from August 5-12. However, the tournament has been relocated to Shepparton, which hosted the Country Championships in 2019.
“The Goulburn Mulwalee Council has been open and transparent about the challenges related to the redevelopment of their hockey centre and we fully support their desire to deliver a completed and first-class facility for future national championships,” said Hockey Australia senior event manager Simon Butterly.
“We are grateful for the support and willingness of the Greater Shepparton City Council to take on the hosting of this event. Shepparton has a strong sporting and hockey community and there is no doubt they will put on a fantastic Country Championships for participants, officials and everyone who attends.”
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Shane Sali, said it was wonderful to again host the popular national event after running a successful championship in 2019.
“Our Sports City precinct has enabled us to host some amazing events such as this one to bring people from around Australia to play hockey in Greater Shepparton,” said Cr Sali.
“These events strengthen our reputation as the leading sporting and events capital of regional Australia and keep our local economy strong and businesses thriving. This event is expected to generate $1.5M towards our local economy.”
Last year’s Hockey Australia Country Championships were held in Albany, Western Australia, where Queensland Maroon won both the men’s and women’s competitions.
Hall will be desperate to lead the Bombers to their first win of the season after three consecutive losses to start 2023.
But the task won’t be easy against the Bulldogs on their home court. Tip: Tatura.
ECHUCA V SHEPPARTON SWANS
After a first up loss for Echuca, the Murray Bombers have bounced back with back-to-back wins.
On the other hand, the Swans are backto-back defeats to commence the new season managed to record their first win last round by overcoming Mansfield on their home courts.
Experienced Echuca trio Steph Vick, Ash Mangan and Lauren Pryde led the way for Echuca, especially when it got tight in those final stages of the narrow win against Rochester.
The Swans were on from the start against the Eagles, with Hannah Garner leading by example from the defensive ring.
Chelsea McDonald was another to play well against the Eagles while youngster Harriet Gall stood tall despite her tender age of 16.
This will be a good test for both these teams as both are vying for the September action. Tip: Echuca.
