Post-flood recovery a long road
Committee to hear from those directly affected by the floods and urged the public to lodge a written submission before the closing date of Monday, June 5 2023.
A written submission could be a comprehensive document or as short as two paragraphs and Ms Lovell also urged Victorians to attend the public hearings.
The current schedule for the public hearings is as follows:
• 23 August 2023, Rochester
• 24 August 2023, Echuca
• 13 September 2023, Shepparton
• 14 September 2023, Seymour
• 11-12 October 2023, Melbourne
DESPITE the floods occurring in October 2022, there are still many people displaced in our community.
Government bodies tasked with post-flood recovery are overwhelmed, as are insurance providers.
The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has urged the flood-affected to lodge a written submission to the Victorian Parliament Flood Inquiry before the submission closing date of Monday June 5 2023.
Ms Lovell is a member of the Legislative Council Environment and Planning Committee that is conducting the Inquiry, which will hold public hearings in flood affected communities in August, September and October.
Ms Lovell said it was crucial for the

The Committee for Greater Shepparton (C4GS) released a report this week that reflects more than 60 member businesses, agencies and not for profit organisations’ experiences during the October 2022 floods.
C4GS CEO Lindy Nieuwenhuizen said the feedback was distilled from nine member roundtables during February and March 2022 and collated by an independent consultant engaged by C4GS. Pick up next week’s edition of The Adviser for further details of the report’s findings.

A CRITICAL volunteer workforce that supports over 1200 communities across Victoria in responding to a range of emergencies including fire, flood and other natural disasters, the CFA is the backbone of Victoria’s emergency response network.
With more than 52K volunteers delivering prevention, preparedness, response and recovery activities across the state every single day, the opportunities for new volunteers wanting to get involved are not only significant but varied.
Volunteering for 53 three years, Tatura CFA Captain Trevor Franklin said that joining the authority enables individuals to give back to their communities and feel a sense of achievement, but not everyone has to become an accredited operational fire-fighter to do so, with plenty of valued, non-operational roles to be filled.
While all volunteers are presented with opportunities to forge leadership and management experience at the same time meeting new friends and developing life-skills,
non-operational volunteers can work to educate and engage the community in fire safety, assist residents to develop fire plans, maintain station and station equipment, drive fundraising or even become a unit secretary or treasurer.
For those wishing to become a general firefighter or an operational volunteer, training can take up to six months, dependent upon the skill set and experience of the trainee.
Equipped with basic skills and safety requirements, newly accredited firefighters are mentored by senior brigade members as they begin to attend incidences, joining the thousands of volunteers from all walks of life who wish to serve their community in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
“To me it has been a privilege to provide the community with the service that we do, whether it has been responding to a fire or flood emergency or by educating the community; just like thousands of other likeminded CFA members across the state,” Trevor said. If you’re interested in joining CFA or learning more about volunteering, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au/volunteer.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE...
Valued community members were recognised for their outstanding volunteer efforts at the 2023 Greater Shepparton Volunteer Recognition Awards. From left, locals Rachel Raut and Roger Driscoll accepted the award for Long Service Volunteer on behalf of winner Gregory Pell, along with mayor Cr Shane Sali.
Recognising those who help others
VOLUNTEERS make our world go round and on Monday, May 15, The Greater Shepparton Volunteer Recognition Awards distinguished some of the region's most outstanding volunteers.
Held at Riverlinks Eastbank, the event was attended by 240 people who watched as three community members and one community group were officially recognised for their exceptional volunteer work in supporting the Greater Shepparton community.
Awards were presented in four categories:
• 2023 Young Volunteer: Kimberley Chu
• 2023 Adult Volunteer: Norman Davis
• 2023 Team Volunteer: Mooroopna
Football Netball Club
• 2023 Long Serving Volunteer: Gregory Pell
This year marked the 14th anniversary of the awards, and it attracted a significant number of nominations. The nominees dedicated their time to various organisations, service clubs, and sporting groups throughout the region.
“While each volunteer contribution is unique, they are all deserving of our recognition and thanks. Greater Shepparton relies on volunteers and any opportunity we have to acknowledge their efforts is fantastic,” said mayor, Cr Shane Sali.
The ceremony was a testament to the spirit of volunteerism and the invaluable contributions made by individuals and groups in the Greater Shepparton community.
Moira Shire residents need firewood collection points
AN initial ban on firewood collection that forced Moira residents to travel a nearly 3-hour round trip to the nearest designated collection point near Rushworth is back in the spotlight. Additional restrictions implemented in March 2022 prevented Moira residents from using the Rushworth collection point, instead requiring them to travel even further to Wilkinsons Track near Warrenbayne to access their firewood.
Wendy Lovell, the Liberal Member for Northern Victoria, is advocating for the State Government to open up more firewood collection points. Ms Lovells says that the current rules regarding firewood collection have significantly impacted the residents who traditionally rely on wood as an energy source for their homes.
“With the firewood collection season underway, it is ridiculous that the State

Government is forcing Moira Shire residents to drive to a collection point just west of Warrenbayne, a 3½ hour round trip, to access firewood to heat their homes," Ms Lovell stated.
“Not surprisingly my office has been inundated with calls from residents wanting to access the abundance of firewood from regional parks within the Moira LGA and I call on the Minister to allow them to do so.”
Ms Lovell asserts that these rules discriminate against Moira Shire residents and urges the Environment Minister, Ingrid Stitt, to reverse the policy and allow them to collect firewood from regional parks within the Moira LGA (Local Government Area).

The sun after the storm
AFTER a substantial hailstorm in March 2023, orchardists were left devastated by the lasting damage caused by the storm. Disappointed and financially struggling, fruit growers across the region were calling out for help.
On May 16, the Albanese and Andrews Governments have introduced a program to provide concessional loans of up to $250,000 to Victorian primary producers affected by the destructive hailstorm. The assistance is part of the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and aims to support eligible farmers in the City of Greater Shepparton and the Yarra Ranges Local Government Areas.
The loans are intended to help primary producers re-establish their operations, restore or replace damaged assets, and cover working capital expenses that have been impacted by a loss of income. The concessional loan program acknowledges the substantial impact on the horticultural sector and aims to support fruit and vegetable growers who

have been affected in the past six months.
One such business affected by the storms is McNab Orchards Ardmona, with hailstorms damaging their precious crops, leaving the business with significant difficulties meeting supply needs.
In an article posted by ABC News, Fruit Growers Chair Mitchell McNab of McNab Orchards Ardmona stated that the concessional loans are a start but are not enough.
“The unfortunate reality is growers are going off the back of two quite stressful years financially, with low fruit prices, labour issues, labour pricing issues, and COVID," Mr McNab said.
"A lot of people don't recognise the capital requirements in horticulture businesses particularly, compared to some of the other farming sectors," Mr McNab said.
He said there was "no way to recover the cost" of lost crops.
Motor histories heritage heaven
By Brittany Drysdale
FROM veteran vehicles to classic cars, the National Motoring Heritage Day had it all.
Taking place on Sunday, May 21, packs of motor vehicle enthusiasts flocked to Victoria Park Lake for the impressive display of vintage vehicles. Over 80 cars- both old and new- were on show and open to the publics excited inspection.
Members of the Goulburn Valley Motor Vehicle Drivers Club (GVMVDC) proudly displayed their vehicles, highlighting their purpose to foster recovery, restoration, and preservation of all types of self-propelled vehicles.
It was a day of reminiscing, with older family members showing younger generations how they used to get around.
“It’s really a museum of how we used to move around our country” said secretary of GVMVDC Barry Croke.
The historic car movement attracts over 450,000 men and women from 200 clubs in Victoria. Incredible amounts of time, effort, and money go into each car, providing a great challenge for motor vehicle enthusiasts.
Whether you’re interested in what's under the bonnet or the captivating exterior, local car shows and clubs have something for everyone.
“It’s a great way to keep people active, talking to one another, overcoming challenges, and providing general enjoyment,” said Barry.

“Everyone was like so friendly and was always like, if you need anything come see me”

Global recognition for Kiwanis Sunrisers
NOMINATED amongst a pool of 425 clubs of a similar size (with 30 or less members) the Sunrisers are in the running to win the coveted Kiwanis International Signature Project Award in June, when the top three medallists will be announced in Indianapolis. Seeing great potential in a long-abandoned community garden and with the steely determination to tackle the fight against childhood obesity, the Sunrisers began developing ‘Sprout’ five years ago.
With unhealthy food choices, a lack of physical activity and poor family eating habits all contributing to the high propensity of overweight school children in the region, the Sunrisers have created a veritable Eden of sensory garden beds and interactive educational displays and shade space perfect for families and community groups to enjoy as they make the most of the extensive
resources made available in the onsite shipping container.
Now a hive of healthy and vibrant activity and education, the edible natives and exotics that thrive in the poly tunnel have attracted all manner of community groups including bush kinder, primary schools and so much more.
Seeing endless possibilities for Sprout, Kiwanis volunteer Felicity Butcher said, “During Covid the project kept the club together as we worked outside, and Sprout has really given us something to be proud of, making a difference for, and in educating children.”
Kiwanis meets at 7am every first and third Thursday of the month and if you are interested in joining or would like more information, please message Joe Sibio on 0459213181 or email, joenola@hotmail.com.
Volunteer victory
By Brittany Drysdale
VOLUNTEERS play an indispensable and crucial role in our everyday life. They are the unsung heroes who dedicate their time and effort to make a difference. Many of our essential services, which we often take for granted, would simply not be available without the unwavering dedication of our volunteers.
Local superstar Kimberley Chu has been volunteering in the Goulburn Valley since her arrival in 2021. After two years, the difference Kim has made to our community is monumental.
With a range of volunteer experience including the Rotary Satellite Club, Greater Shepparton Youth Committee, and the Implementation Advisory Committee for RiverConnect, Kim also helped with programs such as Clean Up Australia Day, Christmas For Those Alone, and many more.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our community, making it a better place for all,” said Kim.
“To me, volunteering has been an eyeopening experience that has deepened my understanding of what's happening in our community. Through volunteering, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges and needs of others, which has inspired me to take action and contribute to positive change.”
After years of hard work, Kim is finally being recognised for all the good she has

“Volunteering has not only broadened my perspective but also empowered me to explore my capacity to help and create a better community for all.”
Council appointed four community representatives to the Affordable Housing Reference Group for a two-year term.

EVERYBODY has the right to feel safe and accepted for being who they are. And that’s exactly what Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination is all about.
Held every May 17 since the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the classification of diseases in 1990, IDAHOBIT celebrates advancements in LGBTQIA+ equality, while fighting against discrimination.
Stigma and intolerance against members of the LGBTQIA+ community is still prevalent in Australia today with 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youths experiencing abuse due to their identity, and 35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians experiencing verbal abuse in the past 12 months.
Around Australia, over 478,986 people attended registered IDAHOBIT activities on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, adorning themselves in prideful rainbow colours. The events aim to provide a safe space for community members, peer support, awareness for the cause and action for real change.

Representing community help organisations, peer-support worker from Headspace Shepparton, Tone Jessup expressed the vitality of bringing awareness to the discrimination LGBTQIA+ community faces daily, reminding people what inclusion and acceptance mean on an individual, community, and global scale.
“As a queer person, it’s important to stand up and show up. IDAHOBIT day is incredibly impactful, and also an opportunity for our youth to see that people care about continuing the fight against discrimination,” said Tone.

Creating a workplace culture that’s right for your business
By Michael Milburn
THERE has been a lot of conversation recently about workplace culture and adjusting back into the office. Movements like the ‘great resignation’, the ‘quiet quitting’ which are all about employee dissatisfaction and the ‘loud leaving’ which is about employers enforcing rules and obligations to their employees under the guise of caring about them, but in fact it’s about control and starts to create mistrust.
The term “toxic workplace” gets thrown around a lot, but is your workplace really toxic?
Creating a workplace environment that suits everyone is no easy task for any employer, but you can test the environment by doing one simple thing, ask your employees. Ask your team about the current mood of the office, does everyone still believe in the values, behaviours and direction of the business. Are there issues that need to be addressed and if there are, then address them.
CREATING A HEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT... that suits everyone is no easy task, but Michael Milburn of Milburn Hill Consultants has sage advice for employers. Photo: The Adviser
Workplace culture is the personality of your business. It’s the relationships between colleagues, leaders and the way the business operates. Workplace culture significantly impacts employee morale, productivity, job satisfaction and overall business success.
So, ask and involve the greatest asset you have, the people in your business.

ROCHESTER V MANSFIELD
Mansfield makes one of the longest trips in the league when it travels to Moon Oval to take on Rochester. The Eagles are in good form having won against Shepparton at home while Tigers were unable to get the business done at Mooroopna. Lachlan Murphy-Dale and Ben Christopher were both outstanding in the win over the Bears sharing in nine goals. They continued that good form for the GVL against the O&M.
If they can continue that good form and get support from the likes of Dirk Koenen, Ben Les, Mitchell White and Brett Mahoney they will be favourite to get the win.
The Tigers will look to Joseph Atley, Matt Kellett, Bailey Wileman, Sean Williams and Mitch Cricelli to lead the way to try and guide them to a second win of the season. Tip: Mansfield.
BENALLA V MOOROOPNA
Mooroopna will be out to consolidate its place in the top six when it heads over to the Rose City to take on Benalla. The Saints are struggling with a few experienced key players out of the team and they will have to be on their game to curb the influence of Jackson Trengove. Trengove played his best game since joining the Cats, booting 10 goals to single handedly win the game off his own boot.
Ethan Hunt, Bryce Rutherford, Ben Woods, Jack Hunt and interleague defender Dom Gugliotti will be looking to lend a hand to Trengove.
David Mennen, Christopher Welsh, Jordan Wolff, Nicholas Brazil and Chris Bamford will try to lead the way for a Saints team hoping to regain Jarrod Waite after he missed last round’s loss to Echuca. Tip: Mooroopna.
SHEPPARTON V
SHEPPARTON SWANS
This is an interesting match-up for many reasons. Both sit on one win for 2023, hoping to kick start their season and remain in the finals mix. For the loser, playing finals could be beyond them, but for the winner the season will remain live. Max Clohesy, Joeve Cooper, Zac Banch, Nathan Horvat, Bowen Calogero and Andrew Riordan will be looking to lead the way for the Swans team that hopes to regain a few key players back from injury including ex-North Melbourne player Jamie McMillan. The Bears will look to Lewis McShane to continue his strong form in front of goals where he booted five majors. It was McShane’s best game since he joined the Bears. If he can continue that good form and get support from the likes of Mitchell Brett, Anthony Andronaco, Tyler Larkin, Tanner Madigan and Adam DeCicco, then Bears should be in front at the final siren. Tip: Shepparton
KYABRAM V SEYMOUR
This is intriguing match-up for a variety of reasons.
I still remain unsure about the credentials
of both these teams even though they have lost one game between them.
And when I say credentials, I mean premiership ones. I had both of them in my top six and so far, they have probably exceeded their own expectations, with Seymour 6-0 and Kyabram 5-1. Kyabram has claimed some good scalps as well while the Lions did a number on its neighbouring rival Euroa and won away at Mooroopna. This will be a test for both of them and Paul Newman and Ben Davey will welcome this contest to see where they are at 5pm tonight. Ben Rigoni, Jack O’Sullivan, Jack Murphy, Rory Scopel and Huw Jones will be looking to lead the way for the Lions while Thomas Holman, Zachary Norris, Aidan Robinson, Toby Wooller and Liam Ogden will look to do likewise for the Bombers. This should be a cracking contest between two teams that are right in the premiership windows with two different game styles. I am going for the Bombers in what should be a fantastic game of country football. Tip: Kyabram
TATURA V EUROA
Euroa will be looking to consolidate its place in the top six when it travels to the kennel to take on Tatura. The Bulldogs come into the contest off the back of a grinding two goal win over Shepparton United while Euroa will be looking to bounce back after a home loss to Kyabram. The Magpies kicked six of their seven goals in a barnstorming second quarter against the Bombers, but then added only one other goal across the remaining three quarters. It will be something that coach Scott Rowan and his team would have reviewed and hope to improve against the Bulldogs.
Chris Ryan, Michael Archer, Andrew Ciavarella, Ethan Penrith, Daniel Weetra and Harley McCarthy will be the Dogs trying to lead the way while the Pies will look to Lachlan Hill, Matthew Ivill, Ben Giobbi, Jack McKernan, Will Hayes and interleague forward Jett Trotter to kick them to a winning score at Tatura Park. Tip: Euroa.
ECHUCA V SHEPPARTON UNITED
This is a massive challenge for Shepparton United as it travels to the Port of the Murray to take on the reigning premier. Echuca is flying at 6-0 and with a percentage in excess of 250.
And, the scary thing for the contenders, is it still has players to return to the lineup which will only make them better.
Mitchell Roche, Declan Newbound, Adam Pigatto, Joel Serra, Mitchell Black and Jayden Magro will be doing their best to go the distance with the well-drilled Murray Bombers.
If they don’t go the four quarters, then the likes of Logan Prout, Samuel Reid, Matthew Lias, Jack McHale, Corbin Anderson and Riley Smith will take the game away from them. The Demons’ aim is to start well to ensure they are competitive for long periods. That said, Echuca will be too strong for the visitors. Tip: Echuca.

Yes, to giving it his all, yes to international competition
ACCUMULATING a swag of medals and titles in his near 15 years as a taekwondoin, Damon Vasterink is a star athlete on his way to the next Virtus Global Games to be held in Vichy, France in June this year.
A student of accomplished coach and mentor, Sammy Rachele, at Shepparton’s Koryo Taewondo Centre, Damon began training in the Korean martial art while he was still a student at Verney Road School.
Now, an Australian Champion with many Victorian State and National Championship gold medals under his blackbelt, Damon will compete at the world’s largest elite sports event for athletes with an intellectual impairment.
Travelling with the Australian team to France in June with the assistance of Sports Inclusion Australia, Damon will represent one third of the Australian taekwondo contingency.
With around 45 countries competing, the Virtus Global Games are held every four years drawing thousands of athletes who vie for medals in sports including athletics, swimming, table tennis, rowing, basketball, futsal, tennis, cycling, and of course, taekwondo.
The sixth iteration of the games will be Damon’s second and with many débuting athletes from the games going on to win at the Paralympics, there is every possibility
that Damon will do the same in the future.
Supported by a team of coaches, managers and carers, Damon is pumped to be competing internationally.
Wishing that he could travel by Damon’s side, a very proud Sammy said, “I love Damon, he’s been a part of my life for such
a long time. He’s a yes man and never ever says no to any challenge.
“Damon loves taekwondo and gets great enjoyment from the sport and is determined when says, ‘I want to be a world champion!’
“Damon is a yes man; he gives it all one hundred percent.”
Goulburn Valley League Netball Round 7 previews
ROCHESTER VS MANSFIELD
This will be an opportunity for Rochester to chalk up a win and keep its push for a top six finish alive. The Eagles are winless in 2023 while the Tigers sit at 2-4 and six points behind sixth place Shepparton. The Tigers will look to youngster Teal Hocking in goals to lead the way. If she can have a good game along with her team-mates, then the home team should get the chocolates. Isobel Anderson and Meg Mahoney were strong performers for the Eagles in their loss to Shepparton. If they can get the supply from team-mates, then anything is possible for the visitors. Tip: Rochester.
BENALLA VS MOOROOPNA
Benalla has a massive challenge when it welcomes the undefeated and top of the ladder Mooroopna. The Cats are 6-0 having put down 268 goals and conceded only 160 against. Young gun, Sienna Burke, experienced mid-courter Maddison Wong and Asha Gray will be important for the Cats to keep the undefeated start in-tact. Olivia Dalton, Jordie Willcock and Natalie Pritchard will be doing their best to lead the way for the Saints in their bid to match the all-conquering Cats outfit. Tip: Mooroopna.
SHEPPARTON VS SHEPPARTON SWANS
This is one of those eight-point games. With Shepparton sitting six points clear of the Swans, it almost is a must win game for the visitors. A loss for the Swans and they will fall 10 points behind their rival in the race for a top six finish. Shepparton shooter Jane Cook was outstanding in the win over the Eagles in round 6. The near 2m shooter was on fire in the Bears’ comfortable win, scoring 59 goals and she is the player that will no doubt pose plenty of headaches for the Swans. Ash Cann in defence and Ella Sidebottom in goals will also be important for the Bears. Swans coach Courtney Simpson will look to Sophie Garner, Klarindah Hudson and Shinea Sali to lead the way and try to steer to victory. If Cook is available, then she just might prove the difference. Tip: Shepparton.
KYABRAM VS SEYMOUR
Kyabram faces a big challenge as it tries to record its first win of 2023 when it welcomes Seymour. The Lions are 5-1, having only lost to Mooroopna this season. The reigning premier will look to its interleague skipper Sarah Szczykulski in defence, Courtney Aldous through the mid-court and Olivia Barry to lead the way. The Bombers will look to the ever-consistent Hollie Reid to lead the way along with shooter, Alyssa Trebilock (22 goals) and Jasmin Reid. In the end, I think the Lions will be too strong for the Bombers. Tip: Seymour.
TATURA VS EUROA
This is the match of the round and will give both teams a good gauge of where they sit in the premiership pecking order. Euroa is the highest scoring team in 2023, having scored 357 goals while Tatura is not bad in this space either having dropped 301 goals. Julia Clarke in goals, Elise Boyer through the mid-court and Molly Kennedy in the defensive third will be important for the Dogs as they look to main their undefeated start to the season. Euroa will look to Tyler Marchbank, Kellie Davidson and Sophie Owen to lead the way while shooter, Mia Sudomirski who scored 42 of team’s 59 goals in the comfortable round 6 win over Kyabram will also be important. She has been a revelation for the Magpies this season and her match-up with Jasmine Fraser will go a long way to deciding who wins the four points. Tip: Tatura.
ECHUCA VS SHEPPARTON UNITED
Echuca will be looking to consolidate its place in the top six while United will be desperate for the points to keep its flickering finals hopes burning, in a huge game for both teams. Last year’s runnerup is going through a re-build having lost some key players over the summer. That said young gun Olivia Kirby in defence, Jasmine Condliffe and Laura Cole through the mid-court have put together good seasons to date. They will have their work cut out trying to contain the Murray Bombers’ shooters Bianca Willis and Sheridan Townrow who will cause
plenty of headaches for the Demons. The dynamic duo shared in 77 goals in the Murray Bombers big win over the Saints in round 6. Belinda Lees was also important
in contributing 15 goals by feeding the shooters who had a day out. If she can do that again, then the Demons will struggle to go with them. Tip: Echuca.
