Vibrant voices in the community

FROM humble beginnings on an orchard in Ardmona, to the big city of Melbourne, lively local Tom Nethersole is putting in the work as queer artist in the community.

From the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club to the Shepparton Theatre Arts Group, Tom has delved into a wide range of community organisations. Feeling very grateful to be part of such groups, Tom said, “Shepparton and the different groups I’ve been a part of here have always been very supportive and welcoming and have made me into the person I am today.”

Growing up in a small regional town as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community was not always the easiest. With the help of Shepperton's ever-growing queer community and a long process of self- acceptance, Tom was able to be more comfortable expressing all sides of his personality.

“Growing up I never saw any queer representation in Shepparton, so it feels incredibly beautiful to see all the events, spaces and groups being formed now and to be a part of them.

“It’s so beautiful to see such a vibrant queer community in a place like Shepparton. It makes me optimistic for the future queer youth and the experiences they’ll have with this supportive community.”

Since finishing up at Goulburn Vallery Grammar School in 2022, Tom has moved to Melbourne to pursue his love of creativity. Working in modelling, acting, music, and photography, Tom follows his

“My goal is to have the freedom to enjoy the creative aspects of my life while also being connected to family and friends,” said Tom.

In a message to those out there who grow up in small regional towns and dream of making it big, Tom shared the advice of taking little steps to do what makes you happy.

“Find the confidence to do what you want and create a network around you that supports your dreams.

“With the support of your friends, family, and community- anything is possible.”
