Community’s tireless work and service honoured at Government House
THE Governor-General hosted a dinner at Government House on June 13 to officially acknowledge the exceptional community spirit and support displayed by residents during the October 2022 flood event.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Shane Sali, attended the dinner hosted by the Hon. David Hurley and Mrs Linda Hurley, alongside 20 other Mayors, which aimed to recognise the ‘tireless work and service’ many Australian communities showed during their response to recent floods, fires and other natural disasters. The dinner sought to recognise the contribution made through the response, relief and recovery process, with many communities, including Greater Shepparton, still working through their individual recoveries.
“Attending the dinner on behalf of Greater Shepparton was a real honour. It shows that our community’s impressive efforts were recognised on a national scale,” Cr Shane Sali said.
“The October 2022 floods were an extremely devastating time for the entire
region. Everyone was affected in some way and the community was truly tested. However, through this adversity our region truly shone and proved what a resilient and supportive community we really are.”

Kicking cancer in the ROMP
By Brittany DrysdaleCANCER is devastating, end of story. However, a cancer diagnosis is even worse if you live in a regional area- something the Rotary Outreach Myeloma Program (ROMP) wants to change.
People living in rural, regional, and remote Australia have a poorer chance of survival from cancer than those living in major metropolitan areas. With specialty treatment not available in regional communities, patients are forced to travel hours from home to receive lifesaving care, adding further costs and strain on themselves and their carers.
ROMP- started by Camberwell Rotary Clubengages with regionally based Rotary Clubs and their communities to make significant difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. The program aims to build awareness of myeloma and support the work of Myeloma Australia- the only myeloma specific charity organisation in the Country.
Local woman Karen Kilgour is a full-time carer for her husband Rod, who was diagnosed
with myeloma four years ago. As no treatment is offered locally, Karen is forced to drive her husband to Melbourne to receive treatment.
“It’s extraordinarily difficult, living with myeloma in a regional community. We travel to Epworth and Richmond- it's about a three-hour trip-, we see the oncologist, then my husband is on a four-hour treatment, then you have to drive home again, so its’ essentially a 12-hour day,” said Karen.
The Rotary Outreach Myeloma Scholarship is offered to nurses who are employed in regional cancer treatment centres. The educational program delivered online by Melbourne University, provides specialist training in cancer nursing with a focus on blood cancers like myeloma.
“Our aim is to make people aware of myeloma, and the difficulties of travelling to Melbourne for regional and rural patients,” said local Rotary member Jenni Hill, “...the other aim is to give out the scholarships to regional nurses, get them trained, so patients don’t have

average across the 12 months, which set the scene for devastating flooding in October.
This year, from July to September, maximum temperatures are likely to be warmer than the median (60 percent to greater than 80 percent chance) for all of Australia excluding the Cape York Peninsula, thanks to a very likely El Niño event.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has all but confirmed El Niño has a 70 percent chance of developing this year, officially upgrading its warning over the event from "watch" to "alert", meaning that we are headed for a very hot and dry summer. If that prediction comes true, there may be belowaverage rainfall over the remainder of winter and spring of 2023.

Higher Education & Skills
Uni pathway unlocks unlimited potential
Beth Gray (left) and Shaelyn Crowhurst tick all the boxes in the aspirations of the Shepparton Education Plan’s Higher Education and Skills stage.
The Greater Shepparton Secondary College graduates, Beth last year and Shaelyn in 2020, are pursuing their respective careers in teaching and nursing. What’s more, they are studying at La Trobe University’s Shepparton campus and best yet, both hope to work in their hometown.
Beth and Shaelyn are among a growing number of Greater Shepparton young people seeking higher education – with the bonus of more opportunity to study and work locally.
“Before Year 12 I wanted to study in Melbourne but since Covid, being home is so much easier,” Shaelyn says. For Beth, it’s made a huge difference
in avoiding debt: “The cost of living can be a real detriment to study.”
The pair are also grateful for the Bradford Shepparton Pathways Program, which supports students from Year 11 to find their pathway into university.
With Beth aiming for a career in primary education and Shaelyn looking to specialise in paediatrics, they expect to cross paths in their careers.
“I’ll teach the children and if they get broken, Shaelyn will be there to fix them!” Beth laughs.
With support from the GSSC Careers Team, the Shepparton Education Plan and its partnerships with higher education, more students are set to follow – a record 97 GSSC students are now in the Bradford Program.

Looking good lends to feeling better
By Stephanie HollidayBEING diagnosed with cancer comes with it a wealth of repercussions beyond our physical health. The unseen emotional and mental toll can seem like an avalanche, and many people find the person they see in the mirror at odds with who they were before their health battle began. One program aims to make the journey through cancer treatment a little less daunting.
Look Good Feel Better is a free, national community service program run by the Cancer Patients Foundation. The program has been developed to teach cancer patients practical strategies to manage the physical, psychological, and social impacts of any type of treatment for any type of cancer.
More than 170,000 women, men and teens have participated nation-wide since the first workshop in Sydney in May 1990, meaning this year Look Good Feel Better turns 33.
The organisation facilitates workshops at GV Health, where participants receive a ‘Confidence Kit’, full of skincare and make-up products donated by the cosmetic industry.
Over approximately two hours, attendees watch a demonstration on a skincare routine to assist with sideeffects like dryness and sun sensitivity; make-up tips to help correct and conceal redness, sallowness, pigmentation, and dark circles, as well as techniques for drawing on eyebrows and eyelashes, in addition to advice on headwear options, including scarf styling and wig selection.
Michelle Honey and her mother Pauline Baldi are both in the midst of cancer treatment. They attended the last local workshop together and found the experience to be invaluable.
“This has been a wonderful and informative morning. I learnt some tips I didn’t know, and mum and I connected with women facing similar battles to ours,” said Michelle.
“It’s true, when you look better, you really feel better. It
has such a profound effect.”
Shepparton has four workshops per year which have been facilitated by Kim O’Keeffe for 20 years alongside Marcia Greig, Pat and Col, as well as other dedicated volunteers over the years. Kim and Marcia are stepping down from
their roles with the organisation, and Look Good Feel Better welcomes new volunteers to register their interest. To register for a workshop, request a home-delivered ‘Confidence Kit,’ or support the program through donations or volunteering, visit lgfb.org.au or phone 1800 650 960.

Namasteing their way to raising over $2000, b.YOGA will donate all the funds to the Cambodian Clean Water and Toilet Project, a cause dedicated to providing basic hygiene essentials to help break the cycle of poverty in Cambodia.
Working with the charity for the past eight years, which has completed 587 toilets and 167 water bores to date, b.YOGA founder Heidi Van Maanenberg is passionate about the cause.
“It’s our passion. We raise a lot of money and go over there with a big group and help put in the toilets.
“We do lots of bonding. We've got a lot of good friends over there now who have become like family. It's a full community, so we do a lot of work with them while we're over there and
The event, which was held on Saturday, June 17 at Kialla Central Hall, welcomed 40 yogi’s from all levels of experience as they acknowledged the winter solstice- a significant time of year in yoga.
The afternoon included grounding practice, chanting, meditation, yoga nidra, organic teas and a vegan dinner with dessert.
The tranquil event aimed to re-set, recharge, and nourish participants while doing good for those in need.

Heidi and her group of dedicated volunteers are heading to Cambodia this Friday, June 23, where the money raised will go towards the installation of a toilet and two fresh water pumps in the small village of Kok Beng, just outside of Siem Reap, making a huge difference to those in the community.
Hero for HeartKids
By Brittany DrysdaleSUPERMAN may be fictional, but the real-life superheroes at GV Vets sure aren’t. On top of all the good they do helping our furry friends, the staff at GV Vets are also raising money for HeartKids.
HeartKids is a not-for-profit charity organisation focused on supporting and advising people impacted by childhood heart disease (CHD), which is one of the largest causes of infant death in Australia. Every day, eight children are born with heart disease, and tragically, four lives are lost each week.
On June 16, workplaces, schools, and childcare centres were encouraged to dress up as superheroes as part of the charities ‘Hero for HeartKids’ day, to raise funds to support children with heart disease and their families.
GV Vets proudly participated in this year's dress-up day, sporting costumes of fan favourites from Batman to The Incredibles, all in good fun for a good cause.
The impactful fundraiser is an important cause for veterinary nurse Kathrine Byrne, who lost her son Elijah to heart disease when he was just three months old.
“Raising funds and awareness for heartkids is something that we will always hold very close to our hearts. For us this fundraiser is something that we love doing, it helps our family to raise awareness and to keep our son's memory alive. It means the world to us to be able to help other families who are faced with the challenges of heart disease each day.
“We will always grieve the loss of our son Elijah, but we find it comforting to know that we can make a difference in making other families heart journeys a bit smoother.
“HeartKids were one of the organisations that offered invaluable support during our son's heart journey, and we will be forever grateful for all of their love, support and
care,” said Katherine.
The money raised for HeartKids provides vital support for children and families who are experiencing CHD and helps fund community support programs. This year, over $65,000 has been raised so far across the country to
support those suffering from heart disease.

A message from Jeremy Rensford, chair, Shepparton Ministers’ Association
DONOR fatigue – have you ever heard of this? Essentially it is when we cease giving to charity because it’s all too overwhelming. There could be many reasons for this dynamic. As I write this, I’m in Kenya doing some charity work. And as some Adviser readers would know, I’m also heavily involved with our own local charity – Shepparton Foodshare. All of this has me thinking…
Firstly, I’ve learnt something in regards to charities; our local community is very generous. We just had a very successful fundraising evening for the Foodshare recently, which showed afresh just how generous some can be. With this in mind, I’m guessing many readers give to charity but may be a little confused or concerned about who they should give to with so many options out there. Here’s some rules of thumb that I believe can help:
-Choose charities that have minimised administration and marketing costs, ie the ones that ensure the highest percentage of your giving ends up helping most in need. Some charities
have a ridiculous percentage of giving going towards costs, not end recipients. You can check these figures as they are freely available upon request or investigation.
-Choose charities that align with your own values system. It’s great to give to a cause that you are personally passionate about. Remember many charities are tax deductible (especially important at this time of year with the End of Financial Year on our doorstep), so giving to them results in you paying less tax.
-Think local – some charities are achieving at local level amazing results right here in GV, while other charities are working in the same field however giving to them will not result in anywhere near as much benefit to our locals. For example, giving to Shepparton Foodshare will ensure people are fed right here in Greater Shepparton. National Food relief charities are not able to cover locals with the same effectiveness.
-Think about tomorrow/the long term, not just about today. Is the charity empowering
Big Day Out
THE Koorie Big Day Out is an event aimed at supporting First Nations youth in dreaming big and achieving their aspirations. Its purpose it to empower and inspire young people by featuring First Nations student ambassadors, community members, and respected elders who can speak to them about the importance of education, dreaming big, and planning for a successful future.
The first Koorie Big Day Out event of the year will take place at Greater Shepparton Secondary College this Thursday, June 22 from 10am until 2pm. This location was selected due to Greater Shepparton having the largest First Nations community in regional Victoria.
those they are helping to no longer need help in the future?
-Ask yourself can I volunteer for a charity? Not everyone has enough cash to make donations, but there are other ways of helping beyond just giving money.
For Christians – helping those less fortunate than ourselves is non-negotiable - Charity Scriptures abound, and I know this is something very meaningful to myself and many of the thousands of Christians in our local community. People can be quite sceptical about religion, and I hate to say, sometimes justifiably. But perhaps if more adhered to the bible’s definition of real religion, we wouldn’t need to be anywhere near as cynical: “Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight” (James 1:27 Msg version).
For more information on local churches go to www.sheppartonchurches.org.au
Additionally, the event coincides with NAIDOC Week, the theme being "For our elders", a celebration of the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It will be the first of four events of their kind throughout the state.
The day will include panel sessions, workshops, and cultural activities aimed at lifting aspirations and supporting engagement among Koorie students. The ultimate goal is to improve Koorie student retention and Year 12 attainment, thus facilitating smoother transitions to post-secondary schooling and future opportunities.
Health, wealth and wellbeing advice for apprentices
By Natasha FujimotoFROM painters, electricians to landscapers, concreters and beyond our nation’s tradies quite literally build and maintain the foundations upon which our society thrives and prospers.
So, when it comes to ensuring the mental, financial and physical wellbeing of our apprentices, it is essential that these young men and women are provided with the right resources, right supports and the right strategies to not only get them through their training but ensure, for them, a long and industrious career.
Beginning with a free BBQ breakfast on a chilly winter’s morning, GOTAFE Shepparton presented an informative seminar for its bustling cohort of apprentices on Wednesday, June 14 in its auditorium focusing on key aspects of tradie health and wellbeing.
Apprenticeship support officer, Tina
McCormack from Apprenticeships Victoria and student wellbeing advisor, Karen Dean from GOTAFE’s Student Success addressed the sizeable group of young tradesmen, delivering a brief overview on how to maintain health and wellbeing in their chosen trade.
Delving a little deeper, the seminar also provided the apprentices with tips on how to recognise the subtle warning signs of poor mental health in themselves and in others as well. The discussion also centred upon the concerning issue and prevalence of workplace bullying and how to combat it. Providing strategies, contacts and organisations for the apprentices to utilise as they continue to fulfil their learning and beyond, the half-hour seminar finished on a high note with a $100-dollar, Total Tools raffle being drawn, with a very grateful first year apprentice, Nash Rendevski being the lucky winner.

Social housing waiting list burgeons
THE Liberal Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, has criticized the Andrews Labor Government for its failure to provide housing for the most vulnerable families in Shepparton, Moira, and Strathbogie shires.
The recently released data from the 202324 State Budget confirmed that residents with priority status for housing are experiencing longer waiting times than ever before. Priority status is given to families who are in immediate need of housing, such as those escaping domestic violence, facing
homelessness, living with a disability, or requiring special housing needs.
According to the budget, in June 2022, families escaping domestic violence had to wait 16.1 months to be housed, an increase of five months compared to June 2021 when the wait was 11.1 months.
Similarly, families who were homeless, living with a disability, or had special housing needs experienced an extended wait of 13.9 months in June 2022, compared to 12.4 months in June 2021. Not only are waiting times increasing, but the number of families on the waiting list is also growing. The March quarter Social Housing Waiting List, released in early June, revealed a total of 67,985 families waiting to be housed, with an additional 865 families joining the list statewide. The state-wide Priority List now includes 37,079 families, with an increase of 620 families in the March quarter alone.
In Greater Shepparton, the total families waiting for housing rose to 2,665, including 1,477 families with priority status. In Moira Shire, the total rose to 934 families, with 571 having priority status, and in Strathbogie Shire, it increased to 93 families, with 52 having priority status.
Wendy Lovell condemned the Andrews Labor Government for leaving vulnerable residents waiting indefinitely on the growing housing waiting list. She highlighted that while the government boasts about its housing build initiative, the Minister admitted during the Budget Estimates hearings that it would only add around
8,000 additional social housing homes. With almost 60,000 families still waiting, Ms Lovell is concerned not enough is being done to address the housing crisis.
The nuts and bolts to succeed
WITHa fixed focus on delivering exceptional customer service as well as supplying a diverse range of industrial fasteners, fixings, abrasives and tools to the construction and related industries, Ultimate Fasteners has had over the last 15 years, quite simply, the nuts and bolts to grow from a two-man operation into a thriving and responsive enterprise.
Opening its doors on January 1, 2008, Ultimate Fasteners was the conception of co-owners Dean Jones and Mark Shanahan, two colleagues who had spent over twenty years working together before biting the bullet to go out on their own.
Beginning with a small showroom, an office and some stock, Dean and Mark saw an opportunity in
the market that was too good to miss, and it wasn’t long before their perceptiveness, determination and hard work paid off.
Hiring their first employee just one month after commencing operation, the co-owners joined-up with Construction Supply Specialists (CSS) eight months later, forging an advantageous and valuable relationship to this day.
A leading buying, marketing and promotional group serving the construction, mining and industrial sector, CSS is a nationwide alliance harnessing the collective volume of around 80 businesses to generate corporate multi-national buying power, resulting in competitive prices passed onto the customer.
“We started Ultimate Fasteners in January 2008 and joined CSS by September that year. Basically, the names behind the brands, CSS have supported us very strongly from the beginning in marketing and dealing with suppliers. It has been a beneficial experience for us, and our membership has opened doors that we’d never have opened on our own, CSS’ marketing is something we hang our hat on,” Dean said.

“When people walk into our new building, they will see the change. Not only is everything now under
the one roof, but we’ve added space to our showroom as well. When our customers enter the front door, they’ll be able to see everything they need set out from front to back before them, allowing us to serve them from the counter with greater speed and efficiency.
“People will see more products on display in each supplier layout
because as we’ve grown, so has our supplier offering, it’s very much a two-way street. Our Milwaukee Experience Centre has, for example, grown from its previous 2x2m space to its new 7x7m presentation in the new store,” Dean said. With a grand opening sale coinciding with end of financial year discounts taking place across
Thursday and Friday, June 22-23, the opportunity to see first-hand Ultimate Fasteners’ impressive and extended premises is simply too good to be missed and is the perfect chance to congratulate another of the region’s most inspiring entrepreneurial success stories as it takes its next forward step.
MAKE no bones about it, Ultimate Fasteners is a business that is squarely focused on providing its diverse clientele with quality assured service and competitive pricing.
Dedicated to supplying and maintaining a comprehensive range of fasteners, fixings, abrasives and tools for building, engineering, construction, and manufacturing as well as for the home handyman, the experienced team at Ultimate Fasteners offer leading brands of quality products backed by the very best in after sales care and service.
“We’ve always been a service orientated business,” said co-owner Dean Jones, “We make sure that we look after our customer base because at the end of the day it’s about the relationships you build. We’ve been in this business for 30 years, growing and diversifying our service and our product offering by being responsive to our customers’ needs. If they’ve got a
job to do, then we react to that; as our customers grow, we grow with them, and that’s why we have always put service first. It’s the core of what we do.”
With counter trade at the Shepparton branch central to the bustling business, Ultimate Fasteners takes its exemplary service on the road with its dedicated sales reps, hand delivering equipment and expert advice across the state, bolstered by its courier system which runs out of Shepparton daily.
“We go as far as Seymour in the south and up to Deniliquin in the north, across to Swan Hill, Echuca and Rochester. We cover a pretty big area that also includes Numurkah, Tocumwal and Cobram as well as Benalla, Euroa and Nagambie and loads of townships in between,” Dean said.
“We believe we go far and beyond the norm and sometimes you have to step outside the square to make things happen and we do that,” added co-owner, Mark Shanahan.
Holding fast to strong relationships
BEGINNING with nuts and bolts 15 years ago, Ultimate Fasteners has augmented its impressive product offering, conjointly responding with its clients to accelerating demand within the construction and manufacturing industry.
The business’ relocation to its new, larger site at 67 Williams Road is as much a reflection of its own success as it is of a thriving industry.
Swiftly responding to their customers by stocking materials to cover their needs from the start, Ultimate Fasteners has built steadfast relationships based upon reliability and trust.
“We started with fasteners because that’s what we loved doing, and back at the beginning of our business it was around 80 percent of what we did. Now, it’s closer to 65 percent of our market, it’s our core business and everything we’ve added on has also grown immensely with
it,” said co-owner, Dean Jones. Stocking a huge range of fasteners from premier brands Bremick and Hobson to unparalleled abrasives represented by Flexovit and Saint-Gobain to the leading tool trade names of Bordo, Kincrome, Milwaukee, Apex, IMPACT-A, Tridon Sheffield blades and beyond, Ultimate Fasteners has evolved to play an integral role in everything from engineering and construction, incorporating concrete panels to the structural steel market.
OVER 15 YEARS OF BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS...with trusted and reliable brands through their membership with Construction Supply Specialists (CSS), the relationship has been essential to Ultimate Fasteners’ success. Supporting Dean (le ) and Mark with marketing and collaborating with suppliers, CSS has opened doors for the business that Dean says they’d never have opened on their own. Photo: Natasha

“We’ve done a lot with the hospital project, getting involved with the precast panel yards. In conjunction we’ve also engaged in a lot of rail projects that have happened both here and in Melbourne, undertaking several stations upgrades, one of which we are doing in West Melbourne currently. We’ve also been involved in the federally funded upgrades at Puckapunyal, so we’re pretty diverse in what we do,” said co-owner Dean Jones.
ANTHONY CLARKEAssistant manager Grant Casey
ACCORDING to Ultimate Fasteners’ assistant manager, Grant Casey, the decision to relocate the business to its more user-friendly and expansive premises at 67 Williams Road was based squarely on the need to respond to the company’s expanding and ever diversifying clientele.
“The new building can simply hold more stock and with more space we can set it up the way we want. Everything here is designed to be easier and more efficient and convenient for our customers,” Grant said.
When asked about how he enjoyed working alongside co-owners Dean and Mark and in jointly leading a skilled and experienced workforce, Grant said, “I love it! We’ve got two really great bosses and the banter amongst the team is obvious. Everyone here enjoys what they do, and everyone enjoys coming to work.”
THE NEXT LOGICAL STEP... For co-owner of Ultimate Fasteners, Mark Shanahan, the relocation of his business with Dean Jones represents a natural progression of being able to service bigger clients while remaining responsive to individual and existing clients. It also provides the space for his dedicated team to flourish on the job.
Co-owner and director Mark Shanahan
CHANGE is the lifeblood of progress, and after 15 years of growth the next logical step in Ultimate Fasteners expansion has arrived in the form of a new, one-stop shop at 67 Williams Road Shepparton.
For co-owner Mark Shanahan, the move represents not only another opportunity to further enhance customer service but provides the space for a more efficient turnaround of stock as well as improved working conditions for the entire team.
“With the capacity to move more stock up through the shop, we’re able to build on our customer service as well as take on bigger clients. With the inward and outward facility at the rear of the store, we can bring bulk stock in as well as turn it around effectively, sending it out to clients without delay,” Mark said.
KAYLENE McCormick has worked for Ultimate Fasteners for the past six and a half years and is the person to see when it comes to accounts.
Working alongside her colleagues, Sophie Dervish and Carole Moore, Kaylene is well placed to appraise the business’ accelerated growth, “The growth of the business has been phenomenal in the six or so years that I have worked here. When I first came on board, we had seven staff, so we’ve nearly doubled that and then of course, we’ve moved into this new, spacious building, which is exciting,” Kaylene said.
When asked to comment on what she sees as the attributing factors leading to Ultimate Fasteners’ on-going success, Kaylene said, “Well, I think it is the way Dean and Mark interact with everyone, from customers, to staff and everyone in between. They are awesome blokes to work for and I think that shows amongst the staff and in the business.”
With Ultimate Fasteners since day one
SNELLING Engineering has been a loyal customer of Ultimate Fasteners since day one, and over the past 15 years, has formed a strong and exceptional business relationship.
In celebration of Ultimate Fasteners’ expansion and relocation into new premises, managing director of Snelling Engineering, Steve Snelling said, “Dean, Mark, and the entire crew at Ultimate Fasteners have consistently impressed us with their willingness and ability to provide advice, make suggestions, and recommend products. They go above and beyond what is expected, always going out of their way to help us with our engineering needs and supplies.
“One of the key reasons we rely
on Ultimate Fasteners is their excellent range and stock levels. Their products have never let us down in terms of quality, and we have complete confidence in their offerings. Not only do they provide top-notch products, but their service is also second to none.
“Despite their exceptional quality and service, Ultimate Fasteners remains very cost competitive. They understand the importance of offering competitive prices without compromising on the quality or level of service they provide.
“Their dedication to customer satisfaction, extensive product range, unmatched service, and competitive pricing make them our trusted partner for all our fastener needs.”
NOTHING IS EVER TOO
MUCH TROUBLE...
Congratulating Ultimate Fasteners on their relocation, longtime client and managing director of CPE Construction, Damion O’Callaghan said that Dean and Mark have always been willing to go that extra mile especially when it comes to researching and finding that less than ordinary product to supply and deliver.
Day-to-day dealings over 15 years forges strong bonds with CPE
CPE Construction and Ultimate Fasteners have formed a strong working relationship for more than 15 years. This permeates from the directors’ level, right through to the sales staff with strong bonds from day-to-day dealings. The business rapport is attributable to the service, knowledge and extensive stock range covering all of our clients’ needs from domestic to
rural or heavy industrial application. Dean and Mark are always willing to go the extra mile to get stock on time or within a short time frame for urgent deliveries. Every time we require an item out of the ordinary, the team never see any trouble in researching and finding the product to supply and deliver to us when required.
We want to congratulate Dean and Mark on 15 years of Ultimate Fasteners, we thank them for their ongoing support of the Milwaukee brand something we have built up over the years together to what it is today. We wish you all the best moving forward in the new premises and hope that as they grow, we continue to grow with them.
We are proud to be a part of the new premises with our Milwaukee Experience centre
All the Best
Business Partners to rely on
IHAVE had the pleasure of dealing with Dean and Mark at Ultimate Fasteners for the past 15 years, and I cannot speak highly enough about their exceptional products and outstanding service. As one of the managing directors of BondPro, a company specialising in the supply and installation of external cladding and carpentry services,
I rely on business partners like Ultimate Fasteners to ensure the successful delivery of our projects.
Ultimate Fasteners has consistently provided us with a great range of products that meet our specific requirements.
Their commitment to quality and timely delivery is exceptional.
Community involvement
WHENyou’ve been involved in the business of supplying products and services across multiple sectors from building, engineering, manufacturing, agriculture and beyond you are bound to establish not only rock-solid relationships within each industry, but also within the community itself.
“We’ve been in this game for over 30 years now and in that time, you build relationships, you build trust. Ultimate Fasteners has always enjoyed being heavily involved in the community and I think that’s why we give back to it wherever we can. The community supports us, and we support them. It’s a two-way street,” said co-owner of Ultimate Fasteners, Dean Jones.
Rolling up their sleeves to give
support and get involved in a variety of sporting clubs over the years, Dean and business partner Mark Shanahan have also extended a generous hand to support the GV Hospice Rallye, Biggest Morning Teas at Lifestyle Community as well as getting behind both Grahamvale and Numurkah primary school events, where both Dean and Mark’s children attended respectively.
In addition to all this, Ultimate Fasteners donates annually to the Devenish, Dookie and District Good Friday Appeal, with all funds raised going to support the Royal Children’s Hospital. Impressively, Ultimate Fasteners were acknowledged this year for assisting the District Appeal to reach over $120K.
Best wishes to Dean, Mark and the team at Ultimate.
On the shelf and ready for the toolbox
WITH over 50 years combined experience in industrial fasteners, co-proprietors Dean Jones and Mark Shanahan have formed a solid base to provide their customers with the best possible service, support and assurance along with a second-to-none range of products meeting the needs of customers across multiple industries.
With the support and backing of Construction Supply Specialists (CSS) from the start, Ultimate Fasteners have been able to
acquire an exceptional range of products, passing on not only competitive pricing to their client base but quality assurance as well.
“We’ve not only forged relationships across the journey of our business, but we’ve also gone with reputable brands and ones that make sense with a strong backing in the marketplace like your Bremick and Hobson in your fasteners game to the Bordo and Sutton in the drilling products.
We’ve got your Saint-Gobain and
Flexovit abrasives and then all your top tier tools in Kincrome, Tridon, Milwaukee, Apex, IPACT-A, Sheffield blades and beyond. We’re just very diverse,” said Dean.
In the Ultimate Fasteners toolbox, you’ll find:
• Hex bolts in mild steel and high tensile strength
• Dynabolts
• Self-drilling screws and rivets
• Washers
• Screwbolts
• High-load bolt fixings
• Chemical anchoring solutions
• Grinding wheels
• Flap wheels
• Bonded abrasives
• Drills
• Hole cutters
• Taps and dies for various applications
• Safety gear
• Hand tools
• Power tools
• and more...
AS you enter Ultimate Fasteners’ impressive and well laid out new building you are not only dazzled by the sheer range of product set-out before you, but you are also struck by the friendly, professional camaraderie of staff as they swiftly move to assist you.
Though good-natured banter amongst the staff creates a welcoming atmosphere, it is also clear that Dean and Mark’s staff enjoy their work, with many employees having been employed by the thriving business for many years.
Two such long term, standout employees are Anthony Clarke, the man behind the scenes in sales and dispatch for over eleven years and sales representative Tony Andronaco who has been taking the company to the
road, meeting customers all over the state for eight years.
With an experienced team of professionals in accounts and administration, skilled and efficient co-workers in inwards and outwards goods, dispatch and deliveries as well as knowledgeable and friendly sales assistants, it's easy to see why Ultimate Fasteners has not only grown rapidly in a short time, but why it is has earned a name for itself for providing exceptional customer service.
The hardworking and dedicated leadership of assistant manager Grant Casey is replicated in co-owners Mark Shanahan and Dean Jones who are clearly highly regarded by their staff, if the profusion of positive, good-humoured comments are anything to go by.

Fun in the snow starts with safety
AS winter arrives, the greater Goulburn Valley region is blessed with easily accessible snowfields, inviting adventure seekers to embark on thrilling road trips. However, it's crucial to
prioritise safety and be well-prepared for the journey ahead.
To ensure that you and your family enjoy a safe and refreshing jaunt to the high country,
RoadSafe Goulburn Valley have complied some quick and easy tips to get you there and back with peace of mind.
Before hitting the road, make it a habit to check the road conditions through the Vic Traffic website. Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, hail, or sleet and stay updated to minimise any risks.
A well-maintained vehicle is your best ally on the road. Prioritise a thorough check-up before your trip. Ensure your battery is strong, and your air-conditioning system is in optimal condition. Don't forget to use anti-freeze in the radiator to combat freezing temperatures.
When instructed, equip your vehicle with approved snow chains. These essential accessories provide the necessary traction on slippery surfaces, ensuring your safety and that of fellow travellers.
Snow and water glare can be visually challenging. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses to reduce glare and improve visibility.
Driving through foggy conditions demands extra care and attention. Be well-rested before embarking on your journey, and if possible, have an extra set of eyes to assist you. Should visibility decrease significantly, find a safe spot to pull over until conditions improve.
When carrying luggage inside or on top of
your vehicle, take necessary precautions to secure the load properly. Respect traffic rules and regulations, as their presence is crucial to maintaining safety on the roads.

Successful regional pathway program to expand
INDUSTRY partners, philanthropic leaders and community representatives came together on Friday, June 9 for an engaging roundtable event in Shepparton, to explore how to boost regional participation in higher education. Hosted by La Trobe University Chancellor the Hon. John Brumby AO, the discussion considered the potential of life-changing interventions such as La Trobe’s Bradford Shepparton Pathway Program and how initiatives such as these can be expanded to ensure all young people living in the regions have the opportunity to reach their full potential and give back to their communities.
Data compiled by La Trobe University indicates that students enrolled in the Albury-Wodonga and Shepparton Bradford Pathways program have a significantly higher likelihood of attending tertiary education compared to the average participation rate in those areas. The program aims to raise aspirations and increase educational engagement for senior school students in partner schools. It provides academic and learning support, including a mentor program with La Trobe University students.
The Gillespie Family Foundation, which played a crucial role in establishing the Bradford Shepparton Pathways program in 2019, has committed an additional $1M to continue the program in Shepparton. La Trobe University has also pledged $2M to sustain the Pathways program in Albury-Wodonga and expand it to Mildura and Bendigo.
La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO expressed gratitude for the Gillespie Family Foundation's generosity, emphasising the positive and lasting impact it has on the lives of young regional Victorians.
“Access to higher education is not only life-changing for the individual and their future career, but it also has a ripple effect for their families and the broader community,

bolstering the region’s skilled workforce,” Professor Dewar said.

Shortest day of the year
THIS Thursday, June 22, will be the shortest day of the year and means that we are now on the path to summer once more. The solstice is an event that occurs when the sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. Two solstices occur annually, around June 21 and December 21.
In many countries, the seasons of the year are determined by reference to the solstices and the equinoxes. It means our
days will slowly get longer by a minute or two each day as we wind up the winter and start towards spring and summer.
The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (“sun”) and sistere (“to stand still”), because at the solstices, the sun’s declination appears to “stand still”; that is, the seasonal movement of the sun’s daily path (as seen from Earth) pauses at a northern or southern limit before reversing direction.
Dynamic cultural narrative to unfold at Munarra Campus
MUNARRA Limited has announced a collaboration with Kaiela Arts and Spacecraft Studio, unveiling plans to develop a dynamic cultural and artistic narrative within the evolving Munarra campus landscape.
Kaiela Arts as the Indigenous lead will provide an important space for local Aboriginal artists and the community to connect to culture through the arts and support Munarra’s cultural acceleration.
Kaiela Arts will partner with Melbourne based Spacecraft Studio who create artworks for exhibition projects, artists and architecture projects in Australia and internationally.
Commenting on the partnership, Chairperson of Munarra Limited, Travis Morgan said, “Building on
a long continuum of artistic and cultural expression in the region, Kaiela Arts have experience in collaboration, including input into the cultural, architectural and furnishing designs of the Shepparton Art Museum.
“Spacecraft also have a long history of partnering with communities across Australia to support translation and delivery of culturally significant projects into built and experiential form.
“We are delighted to be collaborating with both organisations to deliver Munarra’s cultural and artistic narrative," Mr Morgan said.
Several immediate opportunities to weave culture into the construction materials of the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence itself have already been identified and
three Yorta Yorta indigenous artists have been appointed to support the initial stage of the project.
These include:
• Glennys Briggs, Yorta Yorta and Taungurung
• Suzanne Atkinson, Yorta Yorta
• Norm Yackaduna Stewart, Kwat Kwat
‘Glennys, Suzanne and Norm should be congratulated on their appointments at a time when the campus cultural narrative itself is just beginning to reveal itself, making their contributions even more important,’ said Anita Larkin, Manager, Kaiela Arts and Allan Laurie, Director Munarra Limited and Stewart Russell, Founder, Spacecraft in a joint statement.

SHEPPARTON UNITED V SEYMOUR
This is a massive opportunity for Shepparton United to test itself against one of the in-form teams in the competition.
The Lions have only lost the one game which was by a point to 2019 premier Kyabram and they come to Deakin Reserve fresh from inflicting Echuca’s first loss of 2023.
United is fresh of its own win last weekend – its first since the opening day when it defeated Rochester by 13 points.
Marcus Wattie, Sheldon Bogdan, Adam Pigatto, Riley Onley and Damien Pigatto all led from the front for the Demons. They will again be important for the home team. The Demons will be without Lewis Stanton for the game as serves the second week of three game suspension.
Jack O’Sullivan, Nathan Beattie, Ricky Schraven, Riley Mason, Jay Eager and Michael Hartley will be looking to continue their good form to ensure the Lions walk away with the four points. Tip: Seymour.
KYABRAM V BENALLA
This will be a massive challenge for Benalla to take on the red-hot Kyabram on its home deck. Since its three-goal loss to reigning premier Echuca in round 2, Kyabram hasn’t lost, claiming some prized wins against all the other top six contenders to be sitting second on percentage.
Ruckman, Zachary Norris, Brad Whitford, Rhys Clark, key forward Kyle Mueller, premiership defender Jason Morgan and young star Rueben Rode have been in strong form for the Bombers. And the return of Brad Mangan in recent weeks coupled with the return of premiership forward Kayne Pettifer makes the Bombers a tough match-up. The visiting Saints were competitive for three quarters against the Shepparton Swans only to go goalless in the last quarter to slip to a six-goal defeat.
Jakob Salmi, Blake Uebergang, Tom O’Brien, Nick Mellington, Josh Mellington and Chris Welsh will be doing their best to ensure their team is competitive for long periods of the contest. Tip: Kyabram.
EUROA V SHEPPARTON
Shepparton will be hoping to use the thrilling after-the-siren win against Tatura to launch a challenge to try and put pressure on Mansfield and Mooroopna. The Eagles and Cats are two games clear of the Bears and if they are to play finals, then they need to claim a big scalp to make a statement.Co-coaches Xavier Stevenson and Ted Lindon would have like elements of what they have done in the past two victories. But they both know that only a four-quarter effort will be enough to compete with the Magpies, especially on their home deck. Will Hayes has been in Morrison Medal form in his first season back in the competition. Nate Trotter, Jack Frewen, Nathan Stewart, youngster Darby Wilson, Ryan Pendlebury and Jett Trotter will be important for the Pies to ensure they consolidate their fourth place on the ladder with a win over the Bears. Connor Fleming, Ethan Baxter, last week’s hero Trent Herbert, Jacob Watts, Tyron Baden and Bryce Stephenson will be important for the Bears. Tip: Euroa.
ROCHESTER V SHEPPARTON SWANS
This is a massive opportunity for both these teams to be able to get a win. Rochester will be hoping to kick straight after only scoring 5 goals from a possible 25 shots on goal in its 13-point loss to Shepparton United.
Mitch Cricelli, Joseph Atley, Grant Fuller, Nate Rasmussen and Reid Gordon will be desperate to help the Tigers get off the bottom of the table. Promising youngster Will Hamilton made his return from injury to play his first game last round, which would have given the Tigers a big boost in what has been a difficult period post the October floods.
Tom Preece, Max Clohesy, Zac Banch, James Auld and Isaiah Jones will be important for the Swans.
Others who will be important in this matchup will be ex-Kangaroos Jamie Macmillan, Nathan Horvat and Sam Wright coupled with the continued strong form from defender and 2014 premiership player Andrew Riordan.
Coach Jedd Wright will be hoping his team can dish up what they did in the last quarter in the win over Benalla where they kicked six goals to finish over the Saints. If the Swans can defend and make goals hard to come by for the Tigers, then they walk away with the win for me. Tip: Shepparton Swans.
MOOROOPNA V TATURA
Former Rodney Shire rivals will go head-tohead in what should be a good contest.
The Cats were impressive in their wins over Benalla and Mansfield, but fell short by one point against fellow top six aspirant Euroa.
Coach John Lamont knows that there is room for improvement for this team and he will look to the likes of Ben Hicks, Rory Huggard, Jack Hunt, Liam Betson and youngster, Nathan Basile to lead the way. Lamont will be hoping to have Matt Deane and Nathan Drummond available for the match-up with the Dogs if they are cleared to return from injury.
Tatura needs to get back on the horse straight away and forget about the heartbreak of the loss to Shepparton.
The Dogs were in front when the final siren went only for Trent Herbert to break their hearts when he kicked a goal after the siren to snatch the four points away from them.Harley McCarthy, Comanche Walls, Ethan Penrith, Andrew Ciavarella and Chris Ryan will be important if the Dogs are to cause an upset.
Tip: Mooroopna.
ECHUCA V MANSFIELD
Mansfield faces one of the longest trips in football to try and get its season back on track. The Eagles have struggled to re-capture the form that saw them finish second in the home and away in 2022 and make the preliminary final.
Coach Chad Owens will be under no illusion of how tough it will be for his Eagles up against the reigning premier who is on the rebound after its first loss of 2023 at Kings Park last round. Jackson Stewart, Cooper Willoughby, Jack Mchale, Matthew Lias, Mitchell Wales and Sam Reid will be keen to lead the way for the Murray Bombers while the visitors will look to Lachie Christopher, Dirk Koenen, Tom Dunstan, Jack Tomanovits, Jack Hutchins and Cam Arnold to try and come away from the Port of the Murray with the win.
Tip: Echuca.

By Brittany DrysdaleCALLING all softball lovers, the Softball Victoria Masters Championships have returned to Shepparton!
Hundreds of softball fanatics returned for the championships- not for the win or the fame, but the love of the game.
The championships took place from Saturday to Monday, June 10-12 at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve, marking the 25th edition of the Softball Victoria Masters Championships.
The event featured a total of 38 teams, with players from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, and Tasmania. With approximately 800 players and officials, along with additional support crew and spectators, the event had a significant economic impact, injecting around $1M into the local economy.
GSSC mayor, Cr Shane Sali, expressed his excitement while hosting the championships for the seventh time, highlighting the positive impact on the local economy and the opportunity to showcase the region.
“These events strengthen our reputation as a leading sporting and events capital of regional Australia, while keeping our local economy strong and businesses thriving,” said Cr Shane Sali.
To accommodate the matches, 10 softball diamonds were set up at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve. The facilities were commended by Softball Victoria state operations manager Justin Zelones, noting the council and local CFA’s fantastic efforts to ensure the grounds were suitable for use after heavy rainfall leading up to the event.
The three-day event was a smash hit with individuals, families, and teams all doing their part to make the championships a glowing success.
“The Masters atmosphere was at its usual standard with

many smiling faces and sore bodies,” said Mr Zelones, …"The weekend was one for our softball families to get out of the city and enjoy time and laughter with friends new and old.”
