Checking the level of recovery

LEADER of the Nationals, the Hon David Litteproud MP and Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell MP, met community

members of Rochester at the Flood Recovery Hub last Wednesday to discuss the ongoing effects to small businesses and mental health in the region.

Rochester was one of the hardest communities hit by last October’s floods. Residents and businesses are seeking an ongoing commitment to help rebuild the town.

“It was very fruitful. Having (David) Littleproud with (Sam) Birrell here today was a great experience for us to advocate on what our needs are, and I'm sure they’ll take our voices with them to Canberra,” said chair of the community recovery committee Leigh Wilson.

“Local government is here on the ground, but they need the help of the state and federal government. Not just in the immediacy, but in

the years after as well. So, it’s important that we’re here and understanding the recovery and

Yes23 Hub ready to be heard

WITH the Voice to Parliament scheduled to take place later in the year, the Yes23 Hub was launched on Yorta Yorta land, August 15 2023, at 171 Fryers Street, Shepparton. The Hub will be managed by volunteers with the aim of providing a space for respectful and engaging discussion about the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendum.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit and learn more about the Voice to Parliament, so they can source relevant information to share with friends and family.

“The hub has brochures, flyers and booklets designed to answer many common questions people have about the referendum,” said organiser Lisa McKenzie.

“We are fortunate to have a large and vibrant Indigenous community in our region and it's up to all of us to understand the rationale for the Voice to Parliament.”

“Everyone’s excited about the Matilda’s we want to be excited too, we’d love to have that green and gold represent us. And we’re in the stadium. We’re not sitting outside... We want to come in. Yes vote brings us in. The no vote keeps us locked out. So, those symbolisms with nation, or whether it’s flags or anthems and representative teams etc. It's going to be important for Australian society to be able to introduce themselves on the

world stage,” said Paul Briggs OAM.

“I’m going to have two bob each way on this one, I think. I’m quietly optimistic, but we just have to prepare ourselves for a no as well.”

INSPIRA Kids Early Learning Centre

Shepparton held a smoking ceremony to welcome their new Australian, Indigenous and Torres Strait Island flags, which are proudly hung in their foyer. The flags were intentionally hung in the window at the front of the building for the community to see the service as a culturally safe environment for all the children and their families.

The ceremony was planned to highlight

the importance of belonging to country and the national identity among our families and community. Inspira Kids Shepparton is actively involved in the development of a Reconciliation Action Plan and having three flags of country in the service provides a visual statement to the commitment they have moving forward as a community.

Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell MP, was welcomed into the centre as thanks for providing the flags.

Kim O’Keeffe calls for urgent bus review

THIS week in Parliament, Kim O’Keeffe, the Nationals Member for Shepparton District, will call on the Minister for Public Transport, Ben Carroll, to conduct an extensive bus review in the Shepparton region.

Ms O’Keeffe recently met with Greg Fitzsimmons and Roy Dyson, from the Dyson Group of Companies, who provide bus services in the Shepparton region, to discuss the current out-of-date Shepparton Bus Network.

“Over the past 14 years, no comprehensive review of bus services in Shepparton has taken place and the current services do not reflect the growing needs of the community.

“Since the last review, the region has grown significantly, with many new housing estates and areas across the electorate that are not connected to bus routes.

“Services on Saturday are limited, with no services provided on Sunday and there is only one bus that services the Shepparton V/Line

train station on the hour, but this does not align with the V/Line timetable.

“For the young, for the elderly, and for others for whom driving is not an option, public transport is often the only way to get around,” said Ms O’Keeffe. With the rising cost of living and people struggling to pay for fuel, insurance, parking and car registration, public transport should be a viable option,

but with the current service levels, taking the bus is not a practical option.

“Dysons and the community have called for this review for several years now and our towns continue to grow. Shepparton is a thriving and growing region that needs a bus service that reflects the needs of its people.

“When the Bus Plan was released in 2021, Minister Carol said this plan would

include the regions and stated that Labor was committed to delivering a bus network that better meets public transport needs and demand.

“I call on the Minister to ensure that happens,” said Ms O’Keeffe.

“An extensive bus review is long overdue, and a necessity for the region.”

Council’s stance on Voice to Parliament

Shepparton City Council has supported an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament at a Council Meeting on Tuesday 15 August 2023.

The Council endorsed the recommendation, with Deputy Mayor, Cr Anthony Brophy, moving the recommendation, supported by Cr Dinny Adem who seconded the motion.

Mayor Cr Shane Sali said that Council’s support of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament was the result of many local community members asking councillors, as leaders in the community, to collectively have a position.

Cr Anthony Brophy, who moved the motion said, “We are privileged to have the largest First Nations population in Victoria outside Melbourne, and we have one of only two First Nations Councillors across all of Victoria. We have Cr Greg James on Council which provides us with a unique opportunity, a valued viewpoint, and if you like, in essence, a Voice to and within

Local Government.”

Cr Greg James, who has been a strong advocate for supporting the Voice to Parliament said, “I want to thank my fellow councillors for supporting this decision. It is vitally important that we continue to support our First Nations community here in Greater Shepparton.”

As part of the Australian Government’s commitment to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart, a referendum will be held between October and December 2023 to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution, by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.

The Voice would be an independent and permanent advisory body that would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Scouting out the Shepparton police

KIALLA’S 1st Scouts Cubs pawed their way to the Shepparton Police Station for an interactive tour with Youth Resource Officer, Senior Constable Mitchell Bull last Thursday night.

With fun and excitement, loaded with questions about guns and donuts, the children enjoyed learning about a side of the police force not often experienced by outsiders.

The excited troop met out the front of the station with their troop's leader and

a couple of parent helpers, before the 20 eager scouts were shown through the daily operation of the front desk, spent time in the cells, learned the art of detective work, all before they were dusted for

They ended the night in the back of the divvy van, with the flashing lights keeping the kids entertained.

Get your shop on!

THIS year will be the first time the Winter City Market returns following the redevelopment of the Maude Street precinct. Council’s Place Manager, Bonnie McIntosh, said she is working with local businesses to activate the economy and create opportunities for businesses in the precinct to thrive and connect with the community.

“The annual markets have always been a community favourite. We are looking forward to visitors and locals taking advantage of the special offers and enjoying a day out with their families,” she said.

“A range of kid’s activities including face painting, balloon creations, and boutique crafts stalls will be here for everyone to enjoy over the weekend.”

John Anderson, President of the Greater Shepparton Business Network, formerly Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed all traders and shoppers to participate and enjoy the fun and bargains available at the Winter City Market.

“Over these two days there will be entertainment, food and best of all, goods to purchase at reduced prices. This is an opportunity to make a start on Christmas shopping and make great savings.”

Mark the calendar for the great promotions on offer across the CBD. Shoppers are encouraged to get out, shop local and enjoy the final days of winter. For further event details, follow Council’s social media pages or view the Facebook Event Page.

Please be aware Maude Street will be closed to traffic during the event between Fryers Street and High Street.

Lovell urges Government to help subcontractors of liquidated company

CONSTRUCTION company Exel Infragroup Pty Ltd has collapsed, owing over $4.2M to 83 creditors. Wendy Lovell MP is urging the Labor Government to assist subcontractors of the liquidated company.

“The liquidation of civil excavation company Exel Infragroup is impacting several subcontractors involved in the Andrews Labor Government’s North-East Line Project, including Synergy Traffic Management of Shepparton.

“These sub-contractors are small businesses already doing it tough in the current economic climate and the fact that they remain unpaid for work completed on a State Government project is unacceptable. Synergy Traffic Management alone is owed $63,000," said Ms Lovell.

“The Andrews Labor Government must step in and ensure all subcontractors who have undertaken work on State Government infrastructure are paid in full and I call on Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan to ensure payments are made immediately.”

Boost your budget by refinancing your home loan

WHEN you’ve been in your home for a while, you may want to think about refinancing your home loan. The chances are, you have some equity in your home, and are keen to shop around for a lower interest rate. often with a different lender.

GMCU is currently offering – for a limited time only - a special discounted variable rate on our basic variable home loan. Provided you have an LVR (loan to value ratio) of up to 80% on your current mortgage, and don’t have an existing home loan with GMCU, you’re eligible to apply.*

“We have a discounted offer on the current basic variable home loan, at a pretty compelling rate,” said Rob Chaston, Credit Manager at GMCU.

Feedback on Welsford Street draft concept designs

GREATER Shepparton City Council is undertaking consultation with landowners and occupiers of land along Welsford Street on the draft concept designs for the next stages of the Welsford Street Upgrade, between High Street and Sobraon Street.

The Welsford Street Upgrade is a six-stage project that seeks to cater for Welsford Street’s role as a busy north-south arterial road, by increasing road capacity while improving traffic flow, safety and amenity for vehicles and pedestrians.

The upgrade is a key outcome of the Shepparton CBD Strategy 2008 and the Shepparton and Mooroopna 2050: Regional City Growth Plan, which seek to improve access to the CBD by reducing through traffic and redirecting freight and non-local traffic onto alternative routes.

The six-stage upgrade will aim to gradually

have been informed by undertaking transport network modelling, comments from Council officers and State Government agencies, as well as submissions received from the community during the pre-draft consultation phase which took place between 25 July 2022 and 26 August 2022.

The features of the draft concept designs include;

· Intersection improvements at Welsford Street/High Street, and Sobraon/Wyndham Street with additional turning lanes;

· Modified intersection at Welsford Street/ Vaughan Street to allow for only left-turn in and left-turn out movements with improved pedestrian infrastructure;

· A new pedestrian and cycling shared path on the western side of Welsford Street; and

· The retention of most trees where possible;

· Undergrounding powerlines in Welsford

RICHMOND Football Club were abroad with lots of prizes along with Foodshare and GV water to provide the 350 kids with nourishing snacks and plenty of water.

“This is a great opportunity for kids that haven’t experience

AFL before. It’s a key focus moving forward to continue to introduce new participants into our great game and being able to give every kid the same opportunity to get involved,’ said AFL Goulburn Murray coordinator Bailey Bell. With the focus on community and integration, AFL Victoria hopes to get more schools involved next year, using sport as

the medium to keep kids from multicultural backgrounds active and enjoying what the broader region has to offer.

‘Kids want to be listened to and accepted, they can find that with sport. They are not left on the street mixing with the wrong crowd,” said SEC strategic coordinator Sam Atukorala.

A REGION FULL OF inspirational women

A MESSAGE FROM WENDY LOVELL MP, STATE MEMBER FOR NORTHERN VICTORIA

I congratulate the Shepparton Adviser on highlighting the extraordinary accomplishments of the many fabulous women in our region.

As I reflect on my career in business and politics, the overwhelming emotion that I feel is great joy and satisfaction. I am proud to be a member of a family that has owned a long-standing successful business - Lovell’s Shepparton Newsagency.

In addition to starting my career in small business I was also actively involved in community service and advocacy from a young age through organisations that include Rotaract, Friends of GVBH and the Fairley Leadership Program.

As a member of Rotaract, I found great joy in being part of a youth-led organisation dedicated to helping the local community. This experience fuelled my desire to serve my community and become an elected representative in the Victorian Parliament.

As your Member of Parliament for the past 21 years I have been honoured to

represent such an amazing part of our State and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and support given to me by this community.

As a local MP I have been able to make a difference to the lives of individuals and services provided throughout Northern Victoria, but it is my time as the Minister for Housing and Minister for Early Childhood that provided me the opportunity to really make a difference, introducing initiatives such as the Education First Youth Foyer Program and quality improvements in the provision of Early Childhood Education.

Our region is blessed with many inspirational female leaders across the spectrum of politics, business, and community services. I pay tribute to them

all and know the next generation of strong women will be just as inspirational.

She recognizes that women often feel overwhelmed, irritable, and lost during this stage, and she seeks to provide a comprehensive support system to help them navigate these changes.

Breathe and Blossom also offers aromatherapy and a range of essential oil candles, featuring Doterra essential oils.

Beccy's passion for a natural and holistic approach is reflected in her product offerings and the way she integrates these practices into her work with women. Her commitment to helping women flourish extends beyond just emotional and mental support; it includes providing practical tools and products that contribute to overall well-being. Additionally, Beccy is excited to offer in-person counselling appointments at The Old Courthouse building in Numurkah, providing

Kate Adams triumphs in inspiring VFLW Grand Final Victory

INSPIRATIONAL...

CURRENTLY with her teammates celebrating their big win on the Gold Coast, former Shepparton United co-captain Kate Adams spoke to us about her team’s VFLW grand final Port Melbourne win and the social benefits of playing football for girls.

Kate, a former standout for Shepparton United and the Murray Bushrangers, showcased her prowess in the midfield as Port Melbourne secured a hard-fought 5.5 (35) to 3.5 (23) win over Collingwood in the championship clash. This victory marked a significant milestone for Kate, as it was her first flag, and the excitement began well before the first bounce.

Reflecting on the experience, Kate stated, "Walking onto the ground and witnessing the fervour of supporters hours before the game was surreal. It felt like a 'pinch me' moment, a testament to the significance of the occasion."

The journey leading up to the grand final was marked by challenges for the 21-year-old athlete. Adams had battled through injuries, including an ankle injury sustained just before the finals and earlier setbacks like a broken hand and wrist. However, her determination led her to embrace a resilient mindset and return to the game she loves.

"I was determined to hit the ground running despite the obstacles. Being out there and playing in the VFLW grand final was a moment of deep gratitude," Kate shared.

Among the loyal supporters celebrating Kate’s victory was Dean Walton, her former coach at Shepparton United. Their connection traces back to her early years playing footy, and her leadership qualities were evident even then.

Adams' leadership journey continued as she co-captained United and the Murray

Bushrangers. Her accomplishments have made a lasting impact on local and women's football, inspiring young female athletes to chase their dreams.

“I’m up on the gold coast with 15 of my best mates who I wouldn't have if I didn’t play footy. It’s so much more than just a game, there’s a great social aspect from club functions to footy trips,” said Kate.

“It’s something for kids and young adults to have away from school, work and family. It’s a great outlet and it’s truly special to be apart of a team.”

Looking forward, Adams is resolute about her future with Port Melbourne. She expressed her commitment to return for another season, highlighting the special camaraderie and culture of the club. "The support, coaching staff (in particular, thank you to head coach Sean

Buncle), and the club's history make it a unique and cherished environment," Adams affirmed. Adams' remarkable journey—from facing setbacks to lifting the VFLW grand final trophy—serves as a testament to her resilience, leadership, and the ever-growing influence of women's football. Her story resonates as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and a testament to the power of determination and teamwork.

Women kicking goals for local sport

BLEAK could only begin to describe the Shepparton United Soccer Club (SUSC) in March 2022, when Cassandra Wilson, with Lewis Coyle, attended a committee meeting. Fearing the club would fold, the pair shared a momentary glance and made the decision to step up and save the club. With two weeks until season kick-off, 140 unregistered players, no uniforms and no sponsors, they got to work.

Lewis focused on equipment and senior men players. Cassandra focused on the junior’s and the senior women’s team, while learning to navigate the administration systems for registration

and team sheets.

“I don’t think anyone slept much for those two weeks. I will be forever grateful to Leonie Georgiou for picking up the junior kits from the supplier in Melbourne the night before the teams took the field. It was a mammoth effort by Joy Lees coordinating the distribution of the kits,” said Cassandra Wilson.

In October 2022, SUSC elected Ms Wilson as the first female President in the Shepparton area at its AGM.

“This season has been exceptional. The club doubled in size and now fields 15 teams with 277 players. We are now the largest multicultural Shepparton based club and look to continue

growing as the calls from players and families continue to roll in looking to join the club for the 2024 season.”

With the aid of government grants, the club was able to entre a junior female team, which was one of the things Cassandra is most proud of. Along with SUSC being asked to host Bendigo Amateur Soccer League Grand Finals later this year.

Ms Wilson and SUSC aren’t done yet, with many plans on the go moving forward. Including gathering the rich history of SUSC. If there are any community members out there with photos, newspaper clippings, information on past committee members etc. please email sheppunitedsc@outlook.com

BENALLA V KYABRAM

Kyabram will look to rounded out its home and away campaign with a win to head into the first week of the finals. The Bombers had another statement win last round over finals bound Euroa and that would have pleased out-going coach Paul Newman. It will be interesting to see how the Bombers approach this contest as they can’t go up or down on the ladder and they will want to be ready for their week one finals opponent. They had guys out of their team last round and whether they bring them back remains to be seen. Newman may think it is not worth the risk. Jordan Wolff, Christopher Welsh, Joshua Marchbank, Tyler McGregor and Will Martiniello will be desperate to help their team to be competitive against the visitors while the likes of Liam Ogden, Zachary Norris, Kaine Herbert, Rhys Clark, Bradley Mangan and Kyle Mueller will look to bank the win and get through the game without injury.

Tip: Kyabram

SHEPPARTON V SEYMOUR

Shepparton will be looking to finish on a positive note and confirm that it is the best team outside the top six in 2023. Even with a defeat the Bears will still finish in seventh spot. That said, they will want to claim another big scalp before their campaign ends. They have shown what they are capable of on their day and Seymour coach Ben Davey will be reminding his players of that to ensure they take winning form into its qualifying final showdown with Echuca in week one of the finals. Davey will look to the likes of Ben Rigoni, Nathan Beattie, Joshua Alford, Riley Mason, Jack and Tom O’Sullivan to lead the way to ensure they make the most of the opportunity of playing at the home of the 2023 grand final. Trent Herbert (five goals, including the winner in time-on), Tyron Baden (3 goals), Xavier Stevenson, Connor Fleming and Bryce Stephenson will be looking to send the Lions home with a loss. It will be a good contest, but I think the Lions will get the chocolates.

Tip: Seymour

EUROA V MANSFIELD

This is an interesting match-up between last year’s preliminary finalists. Both have had in-different seasons, but are both September bound. That said, they will want to take a win into finals to give them the confidence that they can compete with the contenders. The Eagles haven’t beaten a team inside the top six this season while the Pies have only beaten Mansfield and Mooroopna who will be part of the September action.

Marcus Varley, Nathan Stewart, Nate Trotter, Will Hayes and Andrew Bell will be looking to lead the way for the Pies who hope to regain a few key players ahead of their elimination final match-up with Mooroopna most likely in week one.

Sam Lynch, Ben Christopher, Jack Tomanovits, Daniel Leggett and incoming coach, Jack Hutchins will be the Eagles looking to try and lead the way to give them a win heading into September. It will be tight, but I am going for the Pies.

ROCHESTER V SHEPPARTON UNITED

Both of these teams will be keen to finish off the home and away season with a win. They have three wins each, separated by percentage, with the winner get the bragging rights of finishing higher on the ladder. The Tigers were beaten by Echuca last round while the Demons clawed their way off the bottom of the ladder with a five-goal win over Benalla in round 17. Rochester will look to Joseph Atley, Mitch Cricelli, Wil Hamilton, Matt Kellett and Reid Gordon to get the upper hand on the visitors. On the other side of the ledger, the Demons will look to Liam Serra, Mitch Trevaskis, Mitch Roche, Lewis Stanton, Marcus Wattie and Adam Pigattto to lead the way to give their forwards the best opportunity to make it two wins on the bounce and finish ahead of the home team. It will be a low-scoring affair and I think the Demons might get the win in a close one.

MOOROOPNA V ECHUCA

This will be a cracking contest. Rewind to 2022 and this was the match that the Cats announced themselves with arguably their best win in two decades to qualify them for the 2022 finals. We are here again, but this time there isn’t as much riding on it. Although, don’t tell Mooroopna coach John Lamont that or the co-coaches of the reigning premier.

They will want to win to ensure they take momentum into the finals.

Will the Murray Bombers bring back some of their premiership heroes for this contest to get them ready for the qualifying final or will they continue to manage them?

They were missing at least 6-8 of their best 21 from the team that defeated Rochester last weekend.

I suspect a few of them will play to get a game into them before the finals.

The Cats will look to Daniel Johnston, Jed Woods, Liam Betson, Dom Gugliotti, William Bella and Jack Hunt to lead the way while the reigning premier will look to Jack McHale, Logan Prout, Jack Evans, Jackson Stewart, Bailey Gray and Liam Tenace to lead them to a win and the minor premiership. With the Cats to be without Chris Neild due to a broken arm, I think it tips the scales in the favour of the visitors.

TATURA V SHEPPARTON SWANS

This will be an interesting match-up. Tatura has five wins while the Swans have won the three games. How these teams attack the pre-season will be interesting.

There is no doubt that Paul Barnard and Jedd Wright have commenced the process of what players they want to retain, assessing the gaps and going out aggressively to recruit players to fill the holes.

Both teams have had good games and taken some positive steps forward despite not getting the wins to be featuring in September.

The Swans will look to Enrique Goggin, Zac Clohesy, Nathan Rachele, Tom Preece and Ben Gilberto to lead the way while the Dogs will look to James Bennett, Mitchell Elliott, Ryan Young, Michael Archer and Comanche Walls to get the job done.
