PASSIONATE YOUNG LEADER... Newly appointed Rotaract Club of Goulburn Murray President, Alison White, her communitymindedness and her giving nature have allowed her to collaborate with like-minded people in a social and purposeful way that benefits our community. Photo: Aaron Cordy

By Aaron Cordy WHEN young people glance up from their smartphones and the drudge of social media and selfie culture to open their passionate voices to the local and broader community, it can spark an opportunity to build something great for everyone. For newly appointed Rotaract Club of Goulburn Murray (RCGM) President, Alison White, it is community-mindedness and her giving nature that has driven her life. “I’ve always been passionate about giving back to my community and do so with every chance I get. There are so many opportunities for volunteering in our region and I’ve been fortunate to contribute to Word and Mouth, Shepparton and Mooroopna Urban Landcare Group and more recently the Rotaract Club of Goulburn Murray,” said Alison White. Previously the Satellite Club of Mooroopna, RCGM was officially chartered in January.

Since then they’ve enjoyed social gatherings alongside meetings, fundraising and lending a hand to existing events. “The aim of our club is to collaborate with like-minded people in a social and purposeful way that benefits our community. We also have our first group blood donation tomorrow [last Friday] which we’re very excited about,” said Alison. Outside of Rotaract, Alison works fulltime in an incredible community partnership program called R iverConnect, which enables her to help connect people with the river environment and she also runs Acts of Kindness Apparel, or AOK Apparel, with her partner, which donates 20% of proceeds to mental health awareness in the Goulburn Valley. RCGM meets Tuesday nights, for more information find them on Facebook and Instagram.

KATAMATITE LARKING CELEBRATES... Tom Charters celebrated his 99th birthday last week at the Barooga Hotel with his friend Lisa on the left and daughter Paula on the right. Photo: Supplied

99 years young By Aaron Cordy THE wisps of time trickle through the years on this magical journey we call life, filling us with experiences of love and loss, highs and lows while we try to make the most of our days on this magnificent earth. Katamatite larking, Tom Charters, has certainly filled his 99 years of life to the brim. Born on Friday, November 1, 1924, Tom celebrated his 99th birthday last week at the Barooga Hotel with his daughter Paula, and friend Lisa. Quick to laugh and known for a cheeky joke, Tom spent five years in the Navy during

WW2 on board the HMAS Latrobe as an anti-aircraft gunner, before joining the police force, to which he dedicated another 13 years of his life. Father to four, grandfather six, and great-grandfather to five, with two more precious little buns in the oven. Tom loved playing Bridge, dancing and getting out and about in the community until his failing eyesight meant he had to give up driving at the incredible age of 95. Happy birthday Tom, we wish you many more.

CULTIVATING SAFETY… Will, a fourth-generation Numurkah farmer, is advocating for farm safety. His experience across various farming sectors have highlighted the importance of personal responsibility, managing fatigue, and lifelong learning in ensuring safe farming practices. Photo: Supplied

IN THE heart of Numurkah, a fourthgeneration farmer, Will, is championing the cause of farm safety. At just 26, his experience spans various farming sectors, from sheep to cropping, and even a stint in a vineyard. His diverse experience has given him a keen eye for spotting potential hazards. Will is a firm believer in the shared responsibility of making farms safe. "Each farm is unique and has different risks," he says, recounting harrowing tales of accidents involving pallets, augers, and vehicles. While acknowledging the varying safety consciousness among farmers, Will stresses the importance of personal responsibility. His approach to safety extends to handling machinery and livestock. "You can never

rely on a safety switch," he warns. He also emphasises the need to manage fatigue, a common risk in the farming industry. Despite his extensive experience, Will continues to prioritise safety, understanding that it's not just about protecting oneself but everyone around. He also highlights the importance of lifelong learning, advising fellow farmers to take their time and seek help when unsure. Will's commitment to safety goes beyond his own well-being. He's seen firsthand the long-term impacts of incidents on farmers and their families. "My mum obviously wants me to come home at the end of the day," he concludes, a poignant reminder of the human element in farm safety.

Early Years

Poppi’s journey starts with pride and purpose Community Kids’ Education Leader Varda Veis with Poppi and Amy Walker. The Shepparton Education Plan is set to more than double its number of Marrung Leads to ensure our young people grow up with an appreciation and respect for our region’s rich Indigenous history. Marrung Leads are educators who’ve stepped up at Greater Shepparton Secondary College and across our 28 primary schools to champion First Nations’ cultural inclusion. They work with their students, colleagues and community to ensure the world’s oldest living culture is reflected in the teaching, learning and environment at their school. Many more kindergartens and pre-schools across the Shepparton Education Plan footprint are now nominating Marrung Leads so this cultural understanding and appreciation can begin in Early Years settings.

The Marrung strategy envisions a state where the rich culture, knowledge and experience of our First Nations peoples are celebrated by all Victorians Page 4 – The Adviser Australia No.1:1687 Wednesday, November 8, 2023

For Amy Walker, the initiative has both professional and personal importance. As a Shepparton-based Koorie Engagement Support Officer with the Department of Education, the Marrung Leads will be a great support to her work to lift education engagement and outcomes for First Nation families. Amy is also a proud Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara woman and a proud mum to three-year-old Poppi, who attends Community Kids Early Education Centre in Graham St. “Poppi is just beginning her education journey,” she said. “Having Marrung Leads every step along the way will help ensure her pride in culture is shared with her classmates. “When children are proud of their past, they are ready for a bright future.”

The event will be held at GOTAFE’s Shepparton (Fryers Street) Campus from 10am – 2pm this Saturday, August 26. Prospective students are invited to learn about campus life and study options at GOTAFE and La Trobe University. La Trobe Shepparton Head of Campus Elizabeth Capp said the partnership highlights the pathways to higher education with TAFE. “We are excited to welcome everyone who is interested in further study and career pathways and delighted to be partnering with GOTAFE to deliver a combined Open Day this year,” she said. “Open Days are a great opportunity for people considering further study to explore subject areas, career paths, talk to career advisors and make decisions about their future.” Elif Coskun completed her Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at GOTAFE before progressing to a Bachelor of Nursing at La Trobe University in Shepparton. Elif describes the nursing industry as “very rewarding” and enjoys knowing she is making a difference within the community. “I enjoyed how approachable the educators were and the support they provided,” she said. “The teachers at GOTAFE always bought their own experience into the lectures which made it very interesting and understandable. “The practical workshops were always informative and

Elif said exposure to clinical placements allowed for an enjoyable transition into life at La Trobe University. “The clinical labs at La Trobe are close to real hospitals, which made practical workshops more realistic,” she said. Elif has since started as a Registered Nurse at Goulburn Valley Health where she cares for unwell and premature babies, and occasionally in the emergency department. GOTAFE will also be holding Open Month, with free information sessions and department tours to be available throughout September. This new initiative will increase community access to course information, campus life and study pathways.

“We are doing Open Days a little bit differently this year,” GOTAFE Executive Director Growth and Engagement Hannah Turnbull said. “Whatever your background or your career ambitions, we can provide you options to help you gain the skills and experience you need for your career,” Hannah Turnbull said. “Registering for Open Days via our website is the key to staying up to date with all of the activities we have planned throughout August and September.” Find out more about or register for GOTAFE and La Trobe’s joint Open Day by visiting www.gotafe.vic.edu.au/ open-days-2023

By Aaron Cordy THE love of books opens the mind to thoughts and experiences with each turn of the page. Whether battling dragons, falling in love over again, being swept into the underworld of urban crime, or taking a trek along the Camino Walk. Books can ignite a passion in us all. It was Noel Braun's tales of the Camino Walk that enthralled guests across the Goulburn Valley as he toured his latest book, No Comfort on a Chilly Night. A story of love, ambition, regret and redemption. The passion for writing lived in Noel for a long time, though it wasn't until he retired that he published his first two

novels, Friend and Philosopher in 2004 and Whistler Street in 2007. After the tragic death of his beloved wife Maris, Noel's writing took a turn when he published the first of four memoirs, No Way to Behave at a Funeral. Three explorations of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela soon followed: The Day Was Made for Walking, I Guess I'll Just Keep on Walking and Keep Pressing On Brother. No Comfort on a Chilly Night is a fictionalised work inspired by Noel's working life and his travels abroad. Wisdom and courage By Dillon Shelley THE HMAS Shepparton (J248), a symbol of our town's contribution to World War II, is a Bathurst-class corvette that sailed with distinction under the motto "By Wisdom And Courage." Built at the HMA Naval Dockyard in Williamstown, Victoria, the Shepparton was laid down on 14th November 1941, launched on 15th August 1942 and commissioned on 1st February 1943. Named after our beloved town, the Shepparton was one of 60 corvettes constructed during the war, and one of 36 initially manned and commissioned solely by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The vessel was primarily employed as a survey ship, updating outdated charts and data for regions of New Guinea, a task of immense strategic importance

during the war. The Shepparton, with her displacement of 650 tons (standard), 1,025 tons (full war load), and an armament that included a 4 inch Mk XVI gun, Oerlikon 20 mm cannons and a Bofors 40 mm L/60 gun, served in New Guinea and New Britain between April 1943 and October 1944. She received two battle honours for her wartime service: "Pacific 1943" and "New Guinea 1943–44." The Shepparton's efforts, along with other survey ships, resulted in a wealth of survey and hydrographic data. As one author noted, these areas "are better mapped than the greater part of the Australian mainland, or for that matter, better than many parts of the world which were outside the operative zones of the war." The Shepparton was decommissioned on

Letters to the Editor DIVISIVE YES CAMPAIGN Dear readers, THE voice result confirmed that the greater volume of Australians seek unity, not division based on race which had Australians feeling they were being lead down the ugly path of apartheid. Many failed to take the time to listen to all Australians and to read our country. As it turned out the yes team was the noisy minority, the elites, the privileged, celebrities and arts sector, and heads of

large Australian corporations who had questionable agendas. The Prime Minister, the media, the woke ABC and their followers showed a failing and desperation with the audacity of insulting the majority of Australians by saying anyone who voted NO was dumb! The fact is the YES team came up with a poor case to argue and at the same time consumed huge tax dollars to aggressively tell us to vote yes, however you showcased the fact that you’re way out of touch with the

Ablaze with hope LIGHTING THE WAY… In an inspiring narrative, CFA volunteer and Breast Cancer survivor, Rachel Rendall, sheds light on the financial assistance available to fellow firefighters via the State Government’s presumptive rights compensation scheme, with the hope it could ease their journey. Photo: CFA

IN A deeply personal revelation, Rachel Rendall, a brave CFA volunteer from Dandenong and breast cancer survivor, has candidly shared her journey to inspire fellow firefighters. Her story serves as a reminder, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, of the financial aid available via the State Government’s presumptive rights compensation scheme, a lifeline for her during her battle with cancer. Rachel, donning the hat of a firefighter since 2004, had her world shattered in June 2022 when diagnosed with breast cancer. “It was a shock to hear the news. There is no family

history of cancer. I was worried about how I would cope during treatment, and what my prognosis would be,” she confessed. The road to recovery was fraught with challenges, but with treatment completed and now declared "cancerfree", she chooses to use her experience as a beacon of hope for others. Despite being aware of the presumptive rights for listed cancers, Rachel initially believed it targeted men predominantly. It was upon the suggestion of her 1st Lieutenant that she discovered compensation was also available for breast cancer. “I was pleasantly surprised by how simple and quick the process was,”

she commented. Rachel is possibly one of the first female CFA volunteers to benefit from the scheme, raising important awareness about its applicability for women firefighters. CFA Chief Officer, Jason Heffernan acknowledged the importance of such legislation. “I’m really pleased to hear how successful this process was for Rachel and other firefighters who have also benefited from the scheme,” CO Heffernan remarked. This story serves as a clarion call for unaware firefighters to seek due help and turn a lifethreatening wellness challenge into another triumphant battle fought.

Shepparton’s Kerbside Transition Program

A SIGNIFICANT step towards a more sustainable future has been taken with Greater Shepparton City Council awarding a $1.4 million contract to Mastec Australia Pty Ltd. This contract, approved at the October Council Meeting, is a part of the next phase of the Kerbside Transition Program, aimed at improving waste recovery and recycling. The contract marks the initiation of the manufacture and supply of purple glass bins and rural green bins, an effort funded by DEECA through the Glass Early Adopter Fund. Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, emphasised, “This contract is part of Council delivering a more sustainable waste model. We are working to divert

waste from landfill and the introduction of the purple lid bin and a rural green lid bin forms part of the next stage of this kerbside transition.” The Kerbside Transition Program, established to align with the Victorian Government's push for single stream glass recycling, began its roll out in Kialla and Tatura in March. The program will see a purple lid glass-only bin in every kerbside collection property within Greater Shepparton by 2024. In addition, the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) rural green lid bin will be available to residential rural properties, further enhancing the circular economy in the region.

TURTLES may be seen plodding along our roads over the next two months as the turn in the weather has them seeking lakes and wetlands to look for safe sites to lay their eggs. Council’s RiverConnect staff are working to protect any turtle nests from predators around the region. RiverConnect Project Officer, Alison White, said the team often use mesh covers to protect nesting turtles who are at risk of predators. “Three species of freshwater turtle live in Greater Shepparton, the Eastern Long-Necked, Broad-Shelled and Murray River. Nesting for these turtles typically occurs around November and December, during or after a rain event,” she said. “Turtles will travel long distances to lay their eggs and are most active early in the mornings. Unfortunately, it is known that foxes prey on about 95 per cent of freshwater turtle nests.”

If you find a nesting turtle record the exact location, take a photo and contact RiverConnect on (03) 5832 9700 or riverconnect@shepparton. vic.gov.au to arrange for the nest to be protected. If you find turtle eggs leave them and report the location to Wildlife Victoria on (03) 8400 7300.

New framework aimed at fairness for water entitlement holds NEW LEGISLATION... Water users’ entitlements will be enacted next month. The Place of Take Approvals framework will ensure all entitlement holders will maintain their rights to take water in the rare event that river rationing is necessary. Photo: Supplied

NEW legislation to further protect water users’ entitlements will be enacted next month. The Place of Take Approvals framework will ensure all entitlement holders will maintain their rights to take water in the rare event that river rationing is necessary. The framework will come into effect on 20 November 2023 for the regulated Murray, Goulburn, Ovens, Broken, Campaspe, Loddon, and Bullarook systems. River rationing is uncommon, however, in the Murray system,

delivering water downstream of Barmah Choke to entitlement holders at the time of want is getting harder due to the capacity of the choke declining and customers’ needs changing. GMW Water Delivery Services General Manager Warren Blyth said the Place of Take Approvals framework will ensure equity among customers when rationing can’t be avoided. “It is important people are aware of their water delivery rights before rationing occurs. Riding high Shepparton pedals to $6M success with BMX Nationals By Dillon Shelley GREATER Shepparton recently played host to the 2023 AusCycling BMX Racing National Championships, a weeklong event that attracted over 2,100 competitors, support crew, families, and visitors from across Australia. The championship, which ran recently, was held at the world-class Shepparton BMX Track. Echoing the success of the 2019 championships, the event injected approximately $6M into the local economy. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, was pleased with the event's economic impact. "We welcomed participants, staff and spectators from across the country. This was a great opportunity to activate our local economy and showcase the top sporting facilities located in our region," he said. Former Olympian and AusCycling BMX Pathway Manager, Performance, Luke Madill, praised the Shepparton facility, calling it "world-class" and noting the high level of competition. "It's good... it's really good for the riders as far as staging in the pit area, the spectator area, everything's just in a really good spot. It's easy to get to," Madill stated. He added, “We had all the riders that are usually overseas back here for this event. As far as the pro or the elite riders, we had the best of the best here this week.” The championship was a resounding success, drawing large crowds and creating a memorable event for the region. The event was a testament to Shepparton's growing reputation as a premier sporting destination.

UPGRADES UNDERWAY… Currawa Primary School in Dookie is going through significant modernisation, with strict adherence to safety regulations and allowing full accessibility, ready for the 2024 academic year funded by State Budget contributions. Photo: Supplied

T H ER E is a wind of change breezing through Currawa Primary School in Dookie. The school, an important part of our local educational landscape, is currently halfway t h roug h a sig n i f ic a nt renovat ion a nd modernisation of its main building and portable classroom, readying itself for the 2024 academic year. The school has been operating entirely out of their newly refurbished portable classroom since May as work progresses on the primary st r uc t u re. T he upg rades , meticu lously designed to meet updated departmental safety standards, will ensure full accessibility across the premises. Recent weeks have witnessed replacement of t he roof, const r uc tion

of internal and external walls, installation of window frames, and commencement of foundation works for the new pathway. Significantly, funding for this renovation was supplied through the State Budget. The school received $1.453M in 2020-21, and it was allocated an additional $0.450M in 2022. It is this support that has fuelled this modernisation initiative. Currawa Primary's Principal, Rebecca Brown, sincerely hopes that the Greater Shepparton community will appreciate this exciting development at the school, as she expressed, "This exciting project is currently about halfway through and is on track to be ready to begin the 2024 school year."

Bringing the community together ON SATURDAY October 28, the Filipino Australian & Friends Association gathered for a free barbecue exclusively for FAFA members, funded by FAFA itself. “It was more than just a BBQ; we enjoyed the day with extra plates of food shared by everyone. We had entrees such as spring rolls, cooked at the venue, and empanadas – fried pastries filled with various ingredients like meat, cheese, and vegetables. For mains, we savoured noodles, grilled and baked fish, and for dessert, our traditional sweet sticky rice, among others. We also offered free soft drinks and water bottles to keep everyone refreshed,” said FAFA member Marieta Martin. “In addition to the delicious food, we relished the fresh air, engaged in relaxed conversations, and some of us stayed late into the afternoon, cherishing the camaraderie, jokes, stories, and laughter. “Our picnic took place at the back of Aquamoves in Shepparton, which serves as our main meeting place. This location is ideal as FAFA members come from Shepparton, Euroa, Yarrawonga, and the surrounding areas, making it a central spot for everyone to gather and enjoy each other's company. We also had the pleasure of good music, hearty laughter, and quality bonding time together.” The Adviser. Australia No.1:1687 Wednesday, November 8, 2023 – Page 19
