By Aaron Cordy THE Federal and State Labor Governments have again failed in their responsibility to regional Victoria in the wake of Dan Andrews Commonwealth Games debacle, by withdrawing the $208 million allocated to the Shepparton bypass.

Last Thursday, November 16, Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King released findings of the Government’s Federal Infrastructure Review and revealed funding for Stage 1 of the Shepparton Bypass project will be cancelled.

The $208 million was allocated by the

former federal coalition after the 2017/18 State Budget allocated $10.2 million over three years to undertake preparatory works and land acquisition for the project that brought so much hope to the region.

No respite for working parents seeking childcare

DESPITE a Government campaign to recruit more educators to the industry, many families, in particular those in regional areas, are still grappling with a childcare placement shortage.

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) has endorsed a new report released last week, which has highlighted the vast inequities regional families face in accessing early childhood education and care.

The report includes more than 150 stories from regional families about the challenges they continue to face in accessing education and care for their young children.

RAI CEO Liz Ritchie said the report painted a bleak picture about the state of the early childhood education and care sector in regional Australia.

“This issue needs urgent collaborative action from government, business, the not-forprofit sector, and communities. Without such action, our regional kids will continue to miss out on the rich rewards of early childhood education and care. The structure of many regional communities is vastly different in comparison to large centres and metropolitan cities. Some areas will need tangible support to address their supply gaps,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Working parents make an extremely valuable contribution to the economies of our regional communities. If we are able to better support them, by ensuring their children can access early childhood education and care, we not only help the next generation to thrive, we also help a regional city thrive too.”

By Aaron Cordy THE courage to stand up to bullies and the bigoted minority was in fine display at the Shepparton Library last Thursday, when despite continued threats and the Shepparton Police urging Goulburn Valley Libraries to cancel Rainbow Storytime, Frock Hudson donned her best dress for a popup version on the lawn outside the library.

support of over 100 LGTBIQA+ allies and 17 police officers. The single protester who showed up must have felt a bit of a fool as the harmless activity was enjoyed by the children.

“After the targeted harassment and hate that we had directed at us for this year’s Drag Storytime as part of OutintheOpen, it was really special that the community could come together safely with the Rainbow Community Angels to create a fun, inclusive and welcoming environment for the event to occur,” said Dean Arcuri, the drag performer known as Frock Hudson.

The OutintheOpen festival was held in Shepparton between November 9 to 19, showcasing LGTBIQA+ pride and diversity. While the vast and colourful lifestyle may not suit all members of the wider community, it doesn't mean they don’t have a place in society. At the end of the day, if a Drag Queen reading a story is not for you or your children, stay at home.

Team effort to back every new student Starting secondary school is a big deal. For students like Breanna, Jumanah and Thomas, it’s exciting, inspiring and a little bit scary.

It will be no different for hundreds more Year 7 students coming to Greater Shepparton Secondary College in 2024. But families can take comfort – the college has spent the last year getting to know our incoming students like never before.

A small army of senior leaders, specialist teachers and education support staff make up GSSC’s Transition Team; educators trained and dedicated to making sure the Year 6 to 7 experience is awesome for everyone.

Students have been introduced to the people dedicated to individual care, like GSSC’s Domain Leaders, Multicultural Liaison Officers and Koorie Educators. Our 2023 Year 7 student ambassadors have also re-visited their old primary schools to smooth the way for their incoming classmates.

“We want new students like Breanna, Jumanah and Thomas to know us as familiar and friendly faces from the start,” Executive Principal Barbara O’Brien said.

“Importantly, we’re dedicated to knowing them – so we can best support each and every student to aspire to be their best.”

Neffy’s Walk Let’s Talk, is a suicide prevention awareness walk organised by the members of Neffy’s We Listen, the Shepparton/Mooroopna-based group created to make a safe space for locals who are suffering from suicidal ideation or need support after a loved one has taken their own life.

Steven Neff founded Neffy’s Walk Let’s Talk and Neffy’s We Listen to reach out and help people in the wake of his own loss to suicide.

Nationals Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe and Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell attended and shared their thoughts along with their support for a subject many people

don’t know how, let alone want to face. It needs to be with open conversation and loving support from all walks of life because the sad truth is no one is immune to the tragedy.

Multicultural Liaison Officer of the Shepparton Police, Leigh Johnson, spoke from the heart along with members of the community. Members of the Ethnic Council gave their support, before the group made the sombre walk around the lake.

SUNSMART Victoria’s new hard-hitting campaign is calling on Victorians not to be complacent when it comes to sun protection, as experts claim we must stay focused on addressing the risks associated with UV radiation across the state.

SunSmart Victoria acknowledges the positive progress in skin cancer prevention in Victoria, following insights from the 2022 Summer Sun Protection Survey, Life in Australia reported a remarkable 87% of respondents agreed that if they regularly protect themselves from the sun, they can protect themselves from skin cancer. This is testament to the great progress we have made with our skin cancer prevention programs and campaigns across this state.

However, the research also shows that only one in two Victorians were using sun protection as part of their daily routine during summer and it is often the everyday activities people do that leave them exposed to UV

radiation. This is demonstrated in the survey which revealed over onethird of recent sunburns occurred when people were undertaking everyday activities like walking, gardening, and playing with the kids and nearly one-third of sunburns occurred at home or a friend’s house.

Head of SunSmart Victoria, Emma Glassenbury said while it is fantastic to see the high level of understanding of the connection between using sun protection and reducing your risk of skin cancer, ongoing work needs to be done to ensure sun protection is part of everyone’s daily routine.

“We live in a beautiful state which we want to go out and enjoy, but we need to do this by being conscious of the extreme levels of UV that put us at risk. Our data shows that it is often everyday outdoor activities where people fail to use sun protection, exposing their skin to the sun's harmful UV radiation,” said Ms Glassenbury.

Future of the Broken System COMMUNITY members are being invited to have their say on the future of the Broken System at a series of community drop-in sessions.

The Broken system encompasses an area of over 7000 square kilometres. It includes the section of the Broken River between Lake Nillahcootie and the Goulburn River, as well as part of the Upper Broken Creek. Concerns about the long-term sustainability of the system were identified as part of the Broken System Review in 2020-22, which led to the establishment of a Broken Reconfiguration Feasibility Study.

The study aims to identify options for the Broken System to best meet the long-term needs and aspirations for entitlement holders and other key stakeholders.

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Water Delivery Services general manager Warren Blyth encouraged people interested in the future of the system to attend the upcoming drop-in

sessions.

“To support the feasibility study we established a consultative committee, which includes seven community representatives,” he said.

“The initial discussions the committee has had have been really productive, but we are keen to ensure we are representing the needs of the broader community in these discussions.

The drop-in sessions will help us achieve this.

They are a great opportunity for people to share their thoughts on what the key focus areas for the feasibility study should be.”

Sessions are being held on November 21, 22 and 27 at the Mokoan Hub and Café at 652 Lake Mokoan Road, Winton North. The sessions will run from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

THE steadfast operations manager at GV Hydraulink, has been a part of the company's journey since day one. He has witnessed firsthand the remarkable transformation of the business under the leadership of Angelo and Lynda Poppa.

"It's been a good experience," Trevor reflects. "I've seen the business grow from a dingy old shed to a state-of-theart workshop."

For 15 years, Trevor has been a key player in the company's success, watching as the Poppas have taken the business to new heights. "Ang and Lyn are great bosses," he adds, appreciating their leadership and vision.

Despite living in Kyabram, Trevor has been more than happy to travel to work every day, a testament to his dedication and the positive work environment at GV Hydraulink.

THE dynamic company manager of GV Hydraulink, is celebrating a significant milestone. For 20 years, she has been at the helm of the business, steering it towards success with her husband, Angelo.

"It's been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey," Lynda shares. "I wasn't trained for this role, but I was thrown into it and it's been a great learning curve."

Lynda's humble beginnings have led to a thriving business, a testament to her adaptability and tenacity. Over the years, she has mastered the systems of running a business and made numerous friends along the way. "Every challenge we faced was an opportunity to learn and grow," she adds.

Ian Wisely Workshop manager IAN started working at GV Hydraulink in 2005 as an adult apprentice.

After successfully completing his apprenticeship Ian excelled with his experience and knowledge and fulfilled the workshop manager position.

With Ian’s excellent communication skills and the ability to work with all levels of staff and customers, Ian plays an integral role at GV Hydraulink.

Funding for local manufacturers LOCAL manufacturers are encouraged by Nationals Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, to apply for funding under 'The Made in Victoria' program, to expand operations, boost productivity, generate local jobs, and transition to net zero emissions.

“Manufacturing is a major contributor to our economy, providing the largest economic output across all industries in Greater Shepparton, and the largest total imports,” said Ms O’Keeffe.

There are t wo funding rounds now open. Small and medium-sized Victorian m a nu fac t u rer s c a n apply for g ra nt s under Round 2 of the Made in Victoria – Manufacturing Growth Program.

Grants of up to $250,000 will support businesses to introduce new technologies, improve productivity and competitiveness in local and global supply chains, upskill workers and create new jobs. Round 2 closes on December 19, 2023.

Applications are also open for the Made in Victoria – Energy Technologies Manufacturing Program to support manufacturers to purchase or develop new equipment, skills, or technology enabling them to capitalise on renewable energy opportunities.

“DESPITE assurances from the former Premier, despite millions of state taxpayer money funding the business case into the project, and despite $208 million put forward by the former Federal Coalition government, Minister Catherine King has cancelled what is an active, ongoing and vital project,” said Nationals Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe.

The bypass has been decades in planning and would give residents a second river crossing, the need of which became starkly evident in last year’s floods when residents from Mooroopna and towns west of Shepparton were cut off from vital services like the Hospital.

“As feared, Infrastructure Minister Catherine King has put the bypass on the list of Victorian projects Labor won’t fund following more than 200 days of delay and uncertainty,” Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell said.

“The critical nature of this project was apparent during the October 2022 floods when the causeway between Shepparton and Mooroopna was cut, but Labor has categorised the project as not demonstrating merit and lacking any national strategic rationale.”

The Goulburn Valley is a prime producer of food for the country and has an estimated 25% of the state’s trucks registered locally, the fact that the Government can so easily withdraw vital funding for necessary infrastructure shows a complete lack of understanding of how the country runs outside of the capital cities.

OVER one hundred people attended the Shepparton High School reunion earlier this month. Past students from the 1940s through to the 1970s enjoyed a “mix and talk” event at Mooroopna Golf Club.

Since the 1940s, the reunions have been an annual event, occurring on the first Sunday following Melbourne Cup weekend each November.

“Sometimes you see people you haven’t seen in over 30 years!” said reunion organiser, Millicent McNeill.

“It’s amazing how the memories come flooding back.

Shepparton’s shingles showdown Free vaccine rollout begins

RESIDENTS of Shepparton are in for a health boon as the Australian Government rolls out a groundbreaking initiative to offer free protection against shingles.

Commenced on November 1, the National Immunisation Program will provide almost five million Australians, including Shepparton locals, with complimentary access to the state-of-the-art Shingrix vaccine, a move hailed as one of the world's most extensive vaccination programs.

This generous $826.8 million commitment targets individuals at risk of severe shingles, encompassing those aged 65 and above, First Nations people aged 50 and over, and individuals 18 and older with compromised immune systems susceptible to herpes zoster infection.

Shingles, a painful blistering rash resulting from the reactivation of the chickenpox virus, can lead to severe complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia, causing prolonged nerve pain lasting months or even years. With

one in five shingles sufferers developing this debilitating condition, the significance of the Shingrix vaccine cannot be overstated.

Replacing Zostavax on the National Immunisation Program, Shingrix offers approximately a decade of

protection, a substantial improvement considering the potential cost of up to $560.

New vaccine rollout in fight against latest COVID-19 variants PREPARE for an upgrade in your COVID19 protection. Health Minister Mark Butler announced on Monday that the Australian government has approved the use of new COVID-19 vaccines specifically designed to combat the latest Omicron sub-variants.

The new vaccines, known as monovalent vaccines, including the XBB.1.5 variant, offer

improved protection against the COVID-19 strains currently in our community.

The Pfizer version of the new vaccine will be available for people over five years old, while the Moderna variant will be for those over 12. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has advised that these new vaccines are preferred

over other vaccines, although all existing vaccines still provide strong protection against severe disease.

Despite the new vaccines, ATAGI emph asis e s t he i mpor t a nc e of t he unvaccinated, especially those over 75 and those with existing health conditions, to get their shots immediately due to a recent surge

in COVID-19 cases.

Booster shot uptake remains low, particularly among the elderly, with only 27% of people aged 75 or over having received their booster in the last six months.

The federal government aims to address this by ensuring the new vaccines are delivered by December 11.

continued from front page FOOD Needs Water is a community-led initiative created by dairy farmer Natalie Akers, to celebrate the volume of food produced in the region. Their Push the Blue Button Campaign has been set up to ensure that the growers and food producers of Northern Victoria have the vital water they need to continue the sustained growth of the region.

It is hard to imagine that a little over a year since the large portion of the state was in flood, we would need to worry about water, but Australia has a long history of droughts. With the Federal Government's planned water buyback, many growers and producers of

food and fibre products in Northern Victoria are worried about what will happen when the state is hit by another long hot summer. That is why food producers Bega, Fonterra, Ky Valley, Noumi and Saputo have joined together to help Natalie Akers fund the project, which will have presenter/journalist Charles Wooley front their commercials.

“Water is the critical ingredient to all the food grown across Northern Victoria and with our growing population we want to ensure we have enough for the future,” said Natalie Akers.

“Less water means less food, more imports and higher grocery prices.”

The 16-year-old was last seen on October 29 in the Dandenong area. David is described as 175cm tall, muscular build with brown hair and brown eyes.

He is known to frequent the Frankston, Springvale, Narre Warren and Dandenong areas.

Police and family have concerns for his welfare due to his age.

GV HOSPICE recently held it’s 35th Annual General Meeting, the highlight bei ng t he presentation of fou r life memberships. It was the first time this award had been conferred.

Recipients of Life Memberships were Dr Adrian Buncle, Wendy Cook, Patricia Gibson OAM and Dr John Hetherington.

President Jeanette Powell AM spoke of the vital roles all had played in the establishment of GV Hospice and the ongoing support each provided over an extended period.

Service awards were presented to John Beaver 30 years, Rob Sands 30 years,

Greg Luscombe 20 years, June Brewer 20 years, Glenys Holyman 20 years, Pamela Wood 20 years, Helen Bray 15 years, Val Gibbs 15 years, Marie Colbert 10 years and Jenny Sim 10 years – all for voluntary service to GV Hospice. Shirley Taylor received a 10 years’ service award as a nurse.

A special presentation was made to retiring Com mit tee of Management member John Beaver after over 30 years service to GV hospice, including being instrumental in the project management of the building in Balaclava Road.

By Aaron Cordy THE anticlimactic unfolding of Monday night’s opening round of the AFL National Draft still turned out to be a dream come true for Tongala local Harley Reid as he was selected with the first pick.

When North Melbourne won their last game for the season many claimed they had blown their shot at recruiting generational prospect Harley Reid, who had long been tipped to go with the first selection of the 2023 AFL National Draft. The pick suddenly belonged to West Coast coming off another dismal season. All the AFL experts chimed in with their opinions with most claiming

Harley would be on the first flight back to Victoria once his twoyear contract ended.

Speculation carried for months on whether West Coast would trade pick one to another club, and the offers rolled in. There was also talk that West Coast would keep pick one and not select who every expert agreed is the standout talent of the draft. West Coast not only kept pick one but used it on the obvious best talent in Harley Reid.

“I’ve never ever even said to anyone that I’ve never wanted to go at all. I’ve spoken to family over the last couple of weeks, I've actually had the conversation, and like mate, I'm open [to going to

West Coast]. If they take me at one I'll go in a heartbeat,” Harley told Riley Beveridge and Callum Twomey on AFL Trade Radios Gettable earlier this year on the prospect of going to West Coast.

In other draft news, Murray Bushranger and Shepparton United’s Oscar Ryan was picked up by the Adelaide Crows with pick 27. The medium-sized Defender was a bolter on the night who only attended the draft to support friends.

"I didn't make Vic Country last year, so worked my ass off. It's finally worked out, I’m just so grateful," Oscar said.

Three other Bushrangers were selected Connor O’Sullivan 11, Phoenix Gothard 12 and Darcy Wilson 18.
