Over a hundred trucks and tractors made the trek from Shepparton Sports City precinct along Wyndham Street, up High Street before cutting left towards SPC, in hopes the Federal Government will see reason and stop taking water from the food bowl of Australia. A massive $50,000 was raised for the only tank end sold under the hammer at the celebration. It's the correlation between the 10c for a can or bottle you get back and the amount we are now paying at the supermarkets for these goods, which has customers vexed, with some prices rising more than $3 a slab. While Coles chose not to reply to our enquiries, a representative of Woolworths continued to parrot the line, “It’s a government scheme, and we are not making any more money with the price increase.” The price increase is further proof the hold of corporations like Coles and Woolworths have on this country, and what little regard they seem to have for what families are going through with the cost-ofliving crisis we are in.

Students CAN reach their greatest potential GREATER Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) welcomed Parliamentary Secretary for Education Darren Cheeseman and Chris Varney, Founder and Chief Enabling Officer of I CAN Network, on Monday to announce $5.75M in further funding for the school program. The funding boost means I CAN will expand its in-school student mentoring program from 100 schools to 254 by 2027, as well as provide online support and programs to all remaining Victorian government schools. I C A N suppor t prog ra ms i nclude holding presentations for families and broader school communities to help them

understand and include autistic students. Their mission is for all autistic students in every Victorian government school to have an I CAN Autistic Mentor available to them. Locally, GSSC as well as Kyabram P12 College have the program implemented in their curriculum for select students. “At I CAN, we believe in a rethink of autism that moves young people from a mindset of ‘I CAN’T’ to ‘I CAN.’ We do this through respectful, peer-based programs that celebrate autistic strengths, passions, and shared experiences,” said Chris. “Nowhere else in the world has there

been this opportunity to help ensure schools are safe for autistic students, who often struggle to fit in at school and feel safe in their autistic identity. The I CAN program has had enormous success in helping autistic students feel safe at school. “Following the program, autistic students report feeling a keen sense of hope, belonging and improved self-esteem.” Year 8 student Chloe explained several students meet on Fridays to chill out and do activities as part of the program. “It really helps us with our learning,” said Chloe. “I look forward to Fridays and I’m happy to be a part of the program.”

Catch of the day T H E Golden Tag competition, an initiative by the Victorian Fisheries Authorit y, is casting a line to recreational fishers in the Goulburn Valley and beyond with a tantalising chance to reel in a tagged fish worth up to $10,000. The competition, launched in February 2020, has already awarded over $444,000 to 162 lucky anglers and has been extended until June 2024. Originally designed to stimulate tourism in bushfirea f fe c ted G ippsla nd a nd nor t h- e ast V ic tor ia , t he competition has since been expanded statewide. Ten

$10,000 tagged fish remain elusive in Victoria's waters. Local hotspots like the Goulburn River, Lake Nagambie, and Lake Eildon are home to a $10,000 Murray cod and golden perch. An additional 500 tagged fish, each worth $2,000, are still swimming in Victoria's lakes and rivers. From the famous crater lakes of southwest Victoria to the fishing mecca of Lake Eildon in the north, the Golden Tag competition is a thrilling pursuit for all anglers. Granting honour

Bid to preserve Shepparton’s war memorials IN A bid to foster local heritage and honour the service of veterans, Kim O’Keeffe, the Nationals Member for Shepparton, is urging community groups across the district to take part in the restoration of local war memorials, honour rolls and avenues of honour. This comes as the Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant Program opens its doors for applications, offering grants amounting to $30,000 for such projects. "This program supports many local war memorials across the Shepparton District, that commemorate and pay tribute to those in our community that have served our nation, in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping

operations," said Ms O’Keeffe. She further emphasised the importance of these grants in helping ex-service organisations, local government authorities, non-profit organisations, and education institutions in maintaining these significant sites. Ms O’Keeffe is confident that the funding will go a long way in preserving these symbols of bravery and sacrifice. Labor and Greens Destructive Deal

The Labor and Greens deal on water is the worst outcome for local farmers, manufacturers and our basin communities. These amendments which include destructive water buybacks and the scrapping of the socio-economic test will hurt production, increase costs and impact jobs across our region. It’s estimated these buybacks could cost over $500 million annually in lost production and see a reduction of 95,000 HA of irrigation area in the southern basin alone. But the fight isn’t over, and I will continue to stand up against this legislation that will impact 40 percent of Australia’s food and fibre production. Recently, Water Minister Tanya Plibersek told SPC she always bought Australian tinned tomatoes, so why is she making them harder and more expensive to grow? I care and the Nationals care and that’s why we will continue to fight.

Get On With It And Build Bridges

Recently, Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Darren Chester MP, joined me in Nicholls to discuss with the community about the need for funding for regional infrastructure projects. Mr Chester was instrumental in securing funding for the Echuca Moama Bridge while in government. This project has changed lives and saved lives. Regional funding from the Labor Government for similar critical infrastructure projects needs to put back on the table. Projects like the Yarrawonga – Mulwala Bridge, Kirwans Bridge and the Shepparton Bypass, are essential for their communities and deserve to be funded. It comes as the Labor scrapped the $208 million dollars which the former Coalition Government put on the table to get the first stages of the Shepparton Bypass off the ground. A disappointing decision and another example of Labor abandoning regional Australia.

Dazzling dedication to fashion THE FAFA's United Nations - International Parade of Costumes took place recently at the Overlander Hotel. It was a day filled with vibrant costumes from around the world, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Participants had a fantastic time parading their carefully selected outfits on the red carpet. The event featured captivating dance performances, including native Philippine dances and lively Hawaiian numbers like 'Pearly Shells' and 'Tiny Bubbles.' Entertainment was abundant, with music, singing, dancing, and thrilling raffle draws. “We were truly honoured to have esteemed guest speakers, Honourable Wendy Lovell, and State Member Kim

O'Keefe, grace our celebration. Special recognition goes to Julie Mercer for her unwavering support and exceptional photography skills,” said FAFA member Marieta Martin. The evening's highlight was the International Fashion Parade, brilliantly judged by Kim and Julie. Selecting the winners was no small feat, as everyone looked stunning and walked the catwalk like professional models. Laughter, selfies, and photos filled the air, adding to the festive atmosphere from start to finish, even as we dismantled the decorations. The joyous spirit continued with everyone dancing, laughing, and having a great time. “Our President, Delma Broughton, always manages to

By Aaron Cordy WITH the cost of living becoming a little higher and a little harder for everyone, it was an opportune time to celebrate 20 years of Saver Plus at Berry Street in Shepparton last Wednesday. Saver Plus is the world’s largest financial education and matched savings program. The education and money-matching saving program was developed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ, delivered in partnership with Berry Street and the Smith Family. Berry Street Shepparton, along with Frankston, was the original pilot site for the program 20 years ago and is still going strong with the shift to a fully digital platform after COVID. This allows more people across the

wider community access to the program. Berry Street alone has supported 7295 people who have managed to save over $29.37M with ANZ matching $24.7M, however it is the educational aspect of Saver Plus that has had the biggest impact on participants. “Coming to those regular sessions, many lessons were learned that stick with me until today. One example was putting out a jar and filling it with big rocks first, as our big priorities, big spending in our lives. Then slowly putting everything else in so it fits much better,” said former participant Ali Al Bataat. GV Link land sale makes progress No Water Buybacks

I joined over 100 farmers and industries on a truck, ute and tractor convoy which drove through the heart of Shepparton in protest to the Federal Government’s water buybacks which will see 450GL removed from local irrigators. Taking more water away will have a devastating impact on our region. We are the food Bowl of Australia and one of Australia’s largest and most successful Agricultural and Dairy suppliers. We have incredibly successful companies also with global success such as SPC. Without water farmers cannot grow fruit and vegetables, grass cannot be watered to feed the cows which produce the milk. The Federal Government will be not only shutting down our farmers and industries but shutting down Australian producers of quality products. This will lead to loss of jobs and devastating consequences to our economy. We want water security and certainty, not delays. It is vital that the impact to our region is fully understood by the Federal Government as this decision in no shape or form makes sense. You do not shut down the hands that feed you. That is exactly what this will do. Thank you to all of those that participated in the convoy and the community that lined the Streets.

THE next phase for the GV Link land sale and development at 250 Toolamba Road, Mooroopna has been greenlit by Greater Shepparton City Council. This decision, made at the recent November council meeting, is a significant milestone in the council's long-term strategy to develop industrial land in the region. The GV Link project has been a strategic goal of the council, as outlined in both the 2021-2025 Council Plan and Shepparton and Mooroopna 2050 Regional Growth Plan. However, the lack of infrastructure has stalled potential investors' interest over the years. The council is now seeking federal government assistance to address this issue, focusing on road upgrades, gateway treatments, and underground infrastructure. The provision

of these amenities will kickstart the initial development of Stage 1, addressing the current shortage of industrial land. Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali expressed that the council is keen to get started, with Stage 1 offering four serviced lots over 40 hectares. “The sale of land and development of industrial operations at GV Link is a long held strategic aim of Council, and investor interest in the site is at an all-time high,” he said. “Council knows that there is a shortage of large plots of land for industry, logistics and manufacturing which have transport connections to major international and interstate freight gateways. GV Link is the answer to this and it is right here in our region.”

SHEPPARTON recently celebrated the official opening of the first stage of the Rotary Intergenerational Activities Park at Shepparton Villages. The event commenced with an engaging performance by students from Gowrie Street Primary School. This major community project, the brainchild of Shepparton Villages Board President, The Hon Jeanette Powell AM, and Rotarian, David Earle, has been four years in the making. It represents a significant milestone for the community, made possible through the unwavering support of the Rotary Club of Shepparton South and the wider Shepparton business community. Local students from GOTAFE and Notre Dame Emmaus Campus also contributed,

renovating park benches and tables donated by the Greater Shepparton Council. Shepparton Villages CEO, Veronica Jamison, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Sheppa r ton Villages was fou nded by communit y for communit y. T he Intergenerational Activities Park is a wonderful asset for the community. We cannot do what we do without this support.” The park, which emerged from resident feedback, now provides a space for residents and their younger family members to gather. The Rotary Club of Shepparton South played an instrumental role, donating $20,000 and helping secure further grants totalling over $50,000.

Christmas Chocolate Ripple

EASY DESSERT FOR CHRISTMAS DAY...Chocolate ripple, but make it festive. Photo: Taste

THERE are arguably not many recipes that are easier or more Australian that the fool-proof party staple, chocolate ripple cake. In the rare event that you’ve never made one, we have provided a recipe with some Christmas-spin suggestions to give it that little extra yuletide boost. Ingredients: ■ 500ml thickened cream ■ 1 teaspoon caster sugar ■ 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ■ 1 x 250g packet Choc Ripple biscuits ■ Crushed Candy canes/Crushed Peppermint Crisp/Mint leave lollies Method: Use an electric beater to beat the cream,

sugar and vanilla in a bowl until firm peaks form. Spread a little of the cream mixture along a serving platter to make the base. Stand 1 biscuit upright on its edge and spread with cream mixture. Place another biscuit alongside and sandwich together. Continue layering with cream mixture and remaining biscuits to form a circle (wreath). Spread the remaining cream mixture over biscuits to cover. Place in the fridge for minimum of 6 hours to set. Top with a crushed peppermint crisp, crushed candy canes, mint leaves or any other Christmas coloured treats, then slice the cake diagonally.

GMCU celebrates 2023 at AGM GMCU celebrated their achievements over the past year last Wednesday evening at the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) at their GMCU Annual General Meeting 2023. GMCU welcomed approximately 50 attendees including Members, the GMCU Board of Directors and staff. They wanted to celebrate the year with their Members and give back to the community by inviting keynote speaker leading Senior Constable Leigh Johnson to talk to about cyber

safety and their personal security. The AGM presented another opportunity for the GMCU Executive Leadership team to talk to Members and discuss how they can continue to play a critical role in the community by supporting them and local organisations’ financial needs. “The rate of online scams is increasing and scammers are becoming more sophisticated. It’s important we connect our Members with the right resources and information to protect

Hidden history revealed in a fascinating new book By Aaron Cordy INSIGHT into one of Australia's quiet histories was shared last Thursday at the Shepparton Library when Danielle Scrimshaw presented her book, She and Her Pretty Friend, as part of the OutintheOpen festival. With a focus on women such as Anne Drysdale, Lesbia Harford, and Cecilia John, She and Her Pretty Friend centres on stories of those who have remained obscured and less spoken of in the historical narrative. Throughout this retelling of Australian history, Danielle Scrimshaw explores how colonisation altered ideas of sexuality, how the suffrage movement in Australia created opportunities

for queer women and details her part in creating queer history. “I was already interested in Australian and social history and how people in the past can translate into the present. Because I had come out in my third year of Uni, and I thought I wanted to do an honors thesis, I wanted to do something with Australian history and I knew there was not a lot written about Queer women's history in Australia, so I wanted to do something with that,” said Danielle. Ross knows that if it isn’t up to scratch Coles and Woolworths will send it back. But somewhere along the line the wholesalers stopped working for the farmers and began working for the supermarket consortiums, leaving farmers in the red and customers struggling to feed their families. If a grower like Ross does pull the pin on the season, overnight it will mean 50 jobs lost. He isn’t the only farmer feeling the pinch from the supermarket consortiums and while they know they can make a bigger profit by overcharging the customers and selling less, they’ll continue to do so without a care for who they ruin in the process.

The Kialla Village Settlement (Honeysuckle Park) was first settled in 1893. From 1972 until 1987 the site was used for landfill for the expanding city. MURR AY River Group of Councils (MRGC) Acting Chair Cr Tony Marwood is urging the Australian Government to slow down the Senate process on the Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023 and consult with communities across the region. “We don’t understand why the bill is being rushed through the Senate, especially when it is clear that concern about the potential reintroduction of water buybacks is widespread, both geographically and among industries,” Cr Marwood said. “It’s interesting to note that even the Senate Committee’s own report admits that the committee accepts that buybacks will have an impact on communities. Furthermore, just last week, Murray Darling Basin Authority Chair Sir Angus Houston told us that his team had heard ‘lots of concern about water buybacks’ from communities as part of their current visitation program across the Basin. “If local councils were faced with this

level of community dissent on an issue, they would be obliged to consult widely and directly with the people who would be impacted by the decision. We want the Australian Government to afford our citizens the same opportunity to be heard and validated.” The MRGC wants all parliamentarians to hear the voices of its regional communities, such as those of these agricultural business owners and industry leaders. “We implore the government to slow down the Senate process. We also extend an invitation to all Australian senators to come and visit our region to talk to the people so they can fully understand their concerns, and learn from their insights and experiences.” Third-generation fruit farmer Adrian Conti of Conti’s Orchards added, “If water was to be removed from this area, it would make us unviable”. FUN IN THE SUN... Head to Kyabram District Health Service on Monday December 4 from 10:30 for a fun morning organised by the Disability Liaison Officers, pictured, to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability. Photo: Supplied

Come and celebrate in Kyabram IN March last year, Kyabram District Health Service began to offer a ‘Disability Liaison Officer’ program. They sent out expressions of interest to people with disabilities to join a group to organise their inaugural ‘International Day of People with Disability Celebration’. Eight people came to the first meeting and enthusiastically organised their first ‘International Day Celebration’ for 2022. The event was held on Friday December 2, 2022 and was an enormous success, with over 200 people attending. With the funds raised on the day, the group decided to donate half the money to flood relief for Rochester and the other half was used to fund this year’s celebration. On Monday December 4, 2023 from 10:30am, join the group and community

members for lots to see, do, and eat. There will be a games arena, African drumming under the tree and four 15-minute chair yoga sessions. Free live music will also be available and with a gold coin donation you can take home some homemade Christmas and birthday cards or a potted plant. Funds raised will go towards 2024’s celebration. There will be a sausage sizzle, gelato and coffee van, and make sure you go to the information stall to get a sunflower cookie. At this year's event, they will also be launching the ‘Hidden Disability Sunflower’. There will be a low sensory area with a sunflower out the front for attendees in need of some quiet time. Helping participants navigate the complex NDIS SUPPORT COORDINATION... NDIS Support Coordination has helped people like Belinda and Frank Montague-Elliott navigate the complex NDIS world. A proud man who loved being out in the gardens, Frank suffered a heart attack while mowing his lawns, NDIS carers have been able to keep Frank’s lawns in check and have raised his garden beds to him easy access to the garden he loves. THE independence to get out in the garden, go for a walk or do the simplest task of washing the dishes is so often taken for granted. Such things are usually considered chores. But for many people with disability, it is the ability to do these simple tasks that can offer more joy, self-worth and ease on mental health. Community Interlink (GV Health) provide NDIS Support Coordination for people like Frank Montague-Elliott, to help them navigate the complex NDIS world. A dedicated NDIS Support Coordinator works to help them understand their NDIS funding, the services available to them and how to access them. For Frank, who has epilepsy, the respite carers who come into his house help give him the independence he lost. A proud man who loved being out in the gardens, Frank suffered

a heart attack while mowing his lawns. NDIS carers have been able to keep Frank’s lawns in check and have raised his garden beds to allow Frank easy access to the garden he loves. T he s er v ic e s t h at N DI S Supp or t Coordination helps facilitate, makes life easier for people with disability. The simple act of hanging out with Frank, watching a movie and sharing the mental load that takes a toll on people who have lost the ability to live the life they once did, makes all the difference. “It's a blessing for Frank, Community Interlink NDIS Support Coordination, It made his life so much easier and my life so much easier as a carer. Without them, I would have so much more pressure on me,” said Frank’s wife Belinda Montague-Elliott.

The great weather and good vibes saw a crowd of participants and volunteers come together for the charity bike ride and walk in Tatura. Families tackled a 10km walking trail through the streets of the town. While riders of all abilities could choose between 25km, 50km, 100km, the keen riders challenged themselves to the 200km trek from Tatura through to Mooroopna, Mu rch i son , a nd Ru shwor t h b efore

making their way back to Tatura. This year marked the 13th TAT200 after a few years hiatus due to COVID. The initiative was set up by Tatura Milk Industries to extend community support beyond its traditional stakeholders. All sponsorship money raised through the event is donated to local charities and groups within the Goulburn Valley. Since the event’s inception in 2008, the Tatura 200 has raised over $1,000,000 for local charities, organisations, and community groups in the Goulburn Valley.
