Despite calls from groups like the National Farmers Federation (NFF) to stop the water buybacks, Independent senators, Lidia Thorpe, Victoria, David Pocock, ACT and David Van, Victoria along with the Greens Party gave the Albanese Government the votes to pass the Water Amendment
(Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023. “If the government was to take an additional 450GL from irrigators our local growers will be severely impacted. This legislation would impact people’s jobs and livelihoods, leaving rural communities decimated,” said Cr Sali. Continued Page 10

Generous donation helps new Australians transition easier By Aaron Cordy SHEPPARTON has a long proud history of welcoming new arrivals to the country. There are many struggles involved for the families when they touch down on this strange land called Australia. With the help of fantastic organisations like the Ethnic Council of Shepparton (ECS) and Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC), the transition into Australian life is made a little easier. To h e lp m a k e t h e t r a n s i t i o n t o Shepparton easier for one family, the Victoria Police Shepparton generously donated three bikes to ECS. Thanks to the
support of the Shepparton Central Rotary Club and the expertise of Leigh and Brett from Leading Edge Cycles these bikes were repaired. “I n col laborat ion w it h t he Et h n ic Council of Shepparton, we donated these bikes to newly arrived young students at the Shepparton English Language Centre. These students are very new to the country and need every support they can get to establish themselves,” said manager of ECS Sam Atukorala. “We believe that this collaborative effort of the community in supporting newcomers will have a positive impact on the lives

The tide of COVID continues to roll in with the latest wave By Aaron Cordy DESPITE the World Health Organisation declaring the COVID19 pandemic was no longer a “global health emergency” in May this year, a new subvariant is at work in the community and most people know someone who knows someone who’s had the virus in the last month. Complacency across the country has led to lesser vigilance and testing. Despite this, GV Health has had an average of four cases reported daily over a seven-day period recently. These are reported cases and not a full indication of how many cases of
COVID-19 are active in the community at the moment. “Omicron XBB subvariants continue to be the dominant strains in Victoria. There is currently no evidence for increased severity from any XBB sub-variant. Waves of COVID-19 cases are likely a result of decreasing levels in the population over time from the last point of infection or vaccination,” said Clinical Director of Goulburn Valley Public Health Unit, Dr Will Cross. “COVID continues to be reported as a cause of death in Victoria. We have seen daily COVID deaths rise during the current wave, however daily numbers remain considerably lower
than those seen during previous waves.” New vaccines against the XBB1.5 subvariant will be available to administer in December. Despite this, the Federal Government knows the booster shot uptake remains low, particularly among the elderly. To help combat the latest COVID wave, GV Health is urging more testing in the community, along with requiring masks to be worn in all areas of the health services, to protect staff, patients, and visitors.

Back to the future for former leaders When Luci Garner and Talon Wilson were student leaders at Katandra West Primary School, there were just nine students in their Year 6 class and about 100 in the entire school. Fast forward six years and Luci and Talon are Year 12 graduates and retiring student leaders in a school of more than 2,000 – Luci was a 2023 College Captain at Greater Shepparton Secondary College and Talon served as Dharnya House Captain.
PHOTO... Talon and Luci (back row) with Katandra West’s Year 5 and 6 students
Last week the pair returned to their old primary school for a leadership workshop and to encourage Year 5 and 6 students to take opportunities to step up as they progress through school.
Talon said his experiences as a student leader in Years 6, 9 and 12 taught him the importance of communication, respect for others and the need to be prepared. Luci spoke of the many ways young people can take on leadership roles, particularly in a small town and especially in sport. Luci said her interaction with adults and the responsibilities of leadership will serve her well as she embarks on criminology studies toward her dream of being a detective. Talon hopes to continue to inspire young people by becoming a teacher. Katandra West Principal Marcia Waters said the importance of mentors like Talon and Luci can’t be overestimated as students transition into high school. “They show students just what’s possible in their secondary school journey.”
Apart from Year 12 College and House Leaders, GSSC offers specialist student leadership opportunities across all year levels – School Values, Environmental, Music, First Nations and Multicultural Leaders.

By Aaron Cordy AFTER calling out supermarkets last week for price gouging costing the farmers their livelihood, Natural Earth Produce of Toolamba mulched the 40 acres of prime zucchini crop over the weekend. The dejected owner of Natural Earth Produce, Ross Marsolino, watched on as the tractor ran up and down the rows of Zucchini he couldn't afford to pick. While the pickers who should have been out amongst the vines are all off trying to find work somewhere else. While the supermarkets continue to hold prices at higher rates, families right across the country continue to go hungry, it was devastating to see an abundance of food being turned into inedible pulp. Families struggle
daily to feed their children, but for the mighty dollar these billion-dollar companies reduce farmers to this. At the local supermarket staff members claim it is the cost of fuel that is keeping the prices so high on the shop floor. This doesn't change the fact the stock was sitting in cold storage ready to the fill market demand and the consortium held the price up, creating this trickledown effect which ultimately led to mulching food that should have been eaten. "I've been here since 2015, but every year it's getting f***ing harder and harder because we can't get our margin right, and they [supermarkets] don't work on a consistent basis. If they worked on a consistent basis we wouldn't have this problem," said Ross.

New CEO for Greater Shepparton City Council A NEW era has been ushered in for Great Shepparton City Council by appointing Fiona Le Gassick as t he new C h ief E xe c ut ive Officer. Endorsed at a Council Meeting on November 28, 2023, Ms Le Gassick is no stranger to the region, having served the Greater Shepparton City Council for nearly a decade in various management and director roles. Mayor Cr Shane Sali warmly welcomed Ms Le Gassick's return, stating, “Selecting a CEO is an important task under the Local Government Act and we wanted a leader with a strong vision for the future of our region.” He praised her innovative approach and proven track record in growing Greater Shepparton's economic profile, citing the 'Great Things Happen Here' campaign as a testament to her strategic prowess. Ms Le Gassick, who recently served as the acting COO at Tasmania’s largest registered training organisation, expressed her excitement about returning home. “I look for wa rd to reconnecting with the Councillors, Council staff, local businesses and

Shooting letters to council for a new stadium By Aaron Cordy A BASKETBALL slaps water, drops spray in every direction as the ball returns to hand before being pushed down to the court again sending more drops flying. It's not the latest Nike ad, it’s another rainy Shepparton day and a stadium full of kids unable to play the game they love because of the leaking roof. Hunter Osman and Tyler Oberin of the Tigers Under 10 boys have had enough of games being cancelled and shunted to the Visy Centre at the Wanganui campus, the seven-year-olds have written
to Greater Shepparton City Council hoping to get the roof fixed and the stadium upgrade that’s been in the works for longer than they have been alive. The stadium upgrade has been a long time coming with still no clear answer from the State Government after funds were pledged before the Commonwealth Games debacle dunked another delay on the project. Tyler and Hunter hope their letters will reach those in control of the upgrade and add their voices calling for the new stadium Shepparton needs, so they can get back to playing a game they love with their mates.

Local business and community leader awarded Life Member By Geoff Adams ONE of Shepparton’s top business leaders, John Anderson, has been honoured as a Life Member of the Greater Shepparton Business Network, after many years of service to the Network and its former entity, the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr Anderson received the award as he retired as president of the organisation for the past five years. “Shepparton and the wider Goulburn Valley community has been fortunate having John at the head of the Chamber and more recently Greater Shepparton Business Network,” GSBN board member Geoff Adams told the recent annual general meeting. “A tireless campaigner for local enterprise, John hit the ground running when joining the Chamber board at a challenging time. “John’s modus operandi is always to ensure the job is done well and diplomatically,” Mr Adams said. “He focussed his leadership skills on many challenges, such as the Maude Street revitalisation project, which successfully lobbied governments at all levels to open the Maude Street Mall to slow moving traffic in the heart of Shepparton. “It took a huge effort by the GSBN / Chamber over many years to convince Greater Shepparton City Council that the Mall project was critical to the success of the CBD,” Mr Adams said. “John helped drive this important CBD upgrade with
Wendy Crow and myself, activating councillors and local politicians such as the then local Federal Member, Damian Drum, who was at the forefront of securing funding. “John was also instrumental in forming the Parking Committee with Greater Shepparton City Council, chairing it to this day… and we all know how successful this has been for Shepparton’s CBD businesses. “He has been behind numerous other GSBN projects over the years and only last week addressed the crucial Water Rally in Shepparton. “He is a doer, a person who has led from the front from day one on the Greater Shepparton Business Network / Chamber board,” Mr Adams said. “He has also been excellent at identif ying new community talent to join the board, which as we know, is vital. “John developed a strong rapport with Council, building relationships with the mayors of the day, councillors and senior managers. “A clear thinker, he steps down as president leaving Greater Shepparton Business Network in good shape and with a solid succession plan. “One of the city’s top community leaders, John and his wife Agata are synonymous with Shepparton, having been involved with many organisations over many years and having run a very successful pharmacy before retiring. “Honourable, intelligent, determined, genuine, and above all being humble are just a few words that describe

Less water =
rural communities potentially decimated Greens and independents do deal with Federal Labor continued from front page “LOCAL food manufacturing must be protected, less water means less food produced, leading to higher costs. We will now work to continue the conversation and make sure the message is clear – Keep the Goulburn Valley thriving. Water buybacks hurt communities.” Under the new deal the additional 450Gl of water for South Australia, which was always optional, became a core part of the plan with milestones and a timeline for recovery. The trouble is the lack of testing on the plan's impact has led to a lack of understanding from government ministers in charge of the water bill and members of the Senate who voted for it. Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, who has been pushing for a better outcome with the water buybacks since he was elected last year, was in Canberra last week again fighting for the region. “It is a clear betrayal and the end of the bipartisan approach to water reform; It will hurt production, increase costs, impact jobs and the prosperity of basin communities,” Mr Birrell said. “The Coalition fought for a strong socio-economic neutrality test to protect communities and for a cap on water buybacks, but these were rejected.” Independent Senator David Van, who voted yes on the Restoring Rivers Bill only did so after he reached an agreement with Water Minister Tania Plibersek and visited irrigation areas around Echuca, Kerang and Shepparton in October and met with representatives of the Murray River Group of Councils as well as business owners and industry leaders to discuss their concerns about the water buybacks. The first amendment Senator Van successfully introduced
WATER CONVOY... While the Greater Shepparton community rallied behind Mayor Cr Shane Sali to stop the water buybacks going ahead last week the Federal Labor Government struck a deal with the Greens party to pass the bill no one in the Murray Darling communities wanted. Photo: Emma Harrop
involved the introduction of a 'leasing' option as a water recovery instrument, which presents farmers with three choices: selling their water entitlements via the buybacks, leasing water to the Commonwealth or selling an entitlement, and leasing back water from the Commonwealth. He also negotiated to bring a socioeconomic factor back into the water recovery process, which has been a big part of the disconnect on all sides. “I can hand on heart say if people look at the flexibility that they now have and all the benefits that can bring them vs the one-off hit from the buyback system people in the region should be celebrating these changes,” said Mr Van. Despite the concessions Mr Van included in the bill many don’t believe it is enough to save this precious resource. Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell took the concerns of the community to State Parliament last week when she questioned Water Minister Harriet Shing over whether she was prepared to offset water buybacks in Victoria to discourage the Commonwealth-sanctioned buybacks and ensure no water was lost from food production. “The Victorian Water Minister Harriet Shing must stop putting Labor first and Victoria second. It is time she stood up to the Commonwealth Minister Tanya Plibersek by finding a way to prevent water buybacks in Victoria,” said Ms Lovell.
RALLYING FOR THE FUTURE... Water is the lifeblood of farming communities, the follow-on effect of the buybacks has the potential to be generational if we continue to mismanage this resource that at times seems as though it’s in abundance, but it was not that long ago we were in drought. Photo: Emma Harrop
In the end, words from the politicians on both sides of the bill will mean little when the summer heat rises and that precious water becomes all the more vital.

Furry friends in fire plans AS SUMMER officially kicks off, Victorians are being urged by the CFA and RSPCA Victoria to include their pets and livestock in their bushfire survival plans. CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan emphasised the importance of having a bushfire relocation kit for pets, stating, “It can take longer than you think to move your pets, so make sure you can transport them efficiently and have towels and woollen blankets on hand to protect them.” He also advised families to pre-plan whether their leave-early destination can accommodate

pets. “We also recommend microchipping your pets so they can be easily identifiable, with your phone number on their collar,” he said. A separate plan for horses and livestock is also necessary as late evacuation can pose risks. Rebecca Cook, RSPCA Victoria’s Head of Prevention, added, “Planning for emergencies is such a crucial part of life in Victoria particularly during the summer months.” She recommended storing photos of important pet documents on your phone and identifying pet shelters and an emergency guardian.

OUTDOOR enthusiasts in Victoria are rallying against what they perceive as an attack on their recreational activities. A family day event, scheduled for Saturday, December 9 at Victoria Park Lake, aims to unite those who believe in the right to enjoy Victoria's bush and coastline responsibly and sustainably. T he event's organisers argue that outdoor recreation, from fishing to horseriding, is being increasingly restricted by "unscientific and ideological red tape." They cite locked gates, closed campsites, limitations to boating access, and bans on various activities as evidence of this growing problem.
"If this attack on outdoor pursuits continues, it won't be long until we follow the extreme measures of some other countries and ban catch-andrelease fishing," the organisers warned. They question what could be next on the chopping block - the Melbourne Cup, dirt biking on public land, or even a simple family picnic in the bush. The event aims to highlight these concerns and rally suppor t for the continuation of a sustainable outdoor lifestyle. It's a call to arms for those who believe in the right to relax, adventure, and unwind in Victoria's great outdoors, free from political interference.

A special farewell to our long serving employee Ros Whitehead

WCA was established in 2019 to provide women free training and then employment, all the while aided by a unique program of peer support, The Placement Circle. Many of our Participants have had disrupted careers because they have been out of the paid workforce for years providing care to others. Others, often from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, find the notorious bu reaucratic barriers of the system insurmountable. WCA was recently invited to write a submission to the Federal parliamentary inquiry into employment services. It details the community-wide benefits of our program and demonstrates there can be no prosperous high streets without healthy backstreets. The chair of that inquiry, Julien Hill MP, said on ABC radio last week the system isn't working and at times is "torturing unemployed people". This event is about bringing the community together, having a good time and celebrating everyone’s hard work and achievements ahead of the New Year,” he said. The program, running from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, will feature an outstanding line-up of talented local performers, and special appearances by Santa Claus and his elves. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream will be available on Council’s website and YouTube channel. This all-inclusive, free community event is alcohol-free. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating and mosquito spray for comfort.

RESTORED TO GLORY… The 1929 Oldsmobile Landau Sedan meticulously restored by Numurkah local, Terry Brennan. The vintage car, which required between 3000-3500 hours of restoration work, now stands as a testament to Terry Brennan’s dedication and craftsmanship. Photo: Dillon Shelley
Rolling back the years 1929 Oldsmobile restoration journey A PIECE of automotive history has been meticulously restored in Numurkah, with a 1929 Oldsmobile Landau Sedan brought back to its original glory. Local resident, Terry Brennan, and his family purchased the vintage vehicle in 1976 from previous owner, Robbie Gordon of Drumanure. Over the next three years, the car underwent extensive restoration, with the engine, gearbox, diff, brakes, springs, and more reconditioned. However, the project was then put on hold and the car stored for two decades. In May 1999, Terry resumed his labour of love. With many parts for the classic car hard to find, many components had to be handmade. All work, except the upholstery, was done by Terry himself, with advice from many friends. The car, pristine in its original paint colours, required between 3000-3500 hours of restoration work. The project was finally completed on March 8, 2001. This beautifully restored Oldsmobile serves as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of Terry Brennan.

AN INSPIRING GLIMPSE... This old photo shows a 1929 Oldsmobile Landau Sedan, featuring a straight 6-cylinder, 3.2 litre, naturally aspirated engine and rear-wheel drive, and mirrors the model meticulously restored by Numurkah local, Terry Brennan. With twin beam headlights and a 3-speed manual transmission, it serves as a testament to the timeless elegance and robust performance of vehicles from this era. The photo showcases the potential that Terry saw in his own project, and the classic beauty he strived to preserve in his extensive restoration work. Photo: Supplied

By Aaron Cordy C HOOSI NG bet ween t wo spor ts is a challenge that faces many talented youngsters as fun and games with mates start to become serious; for Tyler Betson it’s a choice of three. After a breakout year, Tyler helped the Shepparton East school team win the grade 6 soccer Grand Final, the Dookie under 14s win the Grand Final in Kyabram District Football Netball League, and has made the team for the first division under 14s Shepparton Gators basketball team. It's been a whirlwind year for the young
man who turned 12 last month, with people saying he couldn’t play three sports. With help, he’s managed to keep up with all three of his commitments. Including his Dookie coach picking him up from soccer games and rushing him to the grounds to fill the role of fullback for his first season of Aussie rules footy. Worries about his future in sports are far from Tyler’s mind, he’s still happy enjoying his sport and having fun with his mates, but the quiet dream ticking away is the desire to play in the NBA like his hero Golden State Warrior, Steph Curry.
