Flood of outrage

Shepparton’s unflooded homes left high and dry LOCAL residents are reeling from a shocking surge in home insurance prices following recent floods. The twist in this tale of financial woe? Many of the homes hit by these astronomical increases were not even affected by the floods. This situation has sparked a wave of outrage, with locals accusing insurance companies of exploiting fear for profit. Neha Samar is among those locals bearing the brunt of this financial burden. Her annual insurance premium, provided by a major insurance company, previously a manageable $1,526, has skyrocketed to a staggering $17,331.24. “Our house was not flooded. It’s not in an area that is listed as flood affected according to the DEECA flood portal,” Samar said, her frustration palpable. “We feel betrayed by the insurance companies, feel as if they weaponise fear to make a profit. The housing crisis is bad as is, and now the insurance jump on all the houses - despite them [not] being flooded means renters pay even more and buying a house becomes a unicorn.”

In response to this untenable situation, Samar has since changed insurance companies. However, her story is far from an isolated incident. Other Shepparton locals, too, have reported their annual insurance costs rising over $10,000, regardless of whether their properties were affected by the floods or claims were made. This pattern suggests an indiscriminate i ncrease , h it t i ng homeow ners ha rd regardless of their flood risk or history. But Samar's criticism doesn't stop at insurance companies. She called out regional politicians for their lack of action, stating, “Our region's politicians have failed to adequately represent the regional areas. They want people to move here but also make it impossible to do so by rolling over for profit making companies.” This situation sends a clear message - it's time for change. The insurance industry must be held accountable for these drastic price hikes, and our politicians must step up to protect the interests of regional Victorians. The community of Shepparton deserves better.

INSURANCE INUNDATION… Shepparton residents face a shocking surge in home insurance prices following recent floods, even for properties not listed as flood affected. Amid accusations of fear exploitation and profit-making, there’s a call for change and accountability in the insurance industry and political representation. Photo: Supplied

Shepparton ranked as one of Australia’s most generous cities SHEPPARTON SHINES… Giz A Break was one of Shepparton’s most funded campaigns during the past year as Shepparton ranks in the top ten of Australia’s most generous cities for 2023, according to GoFundMe’s annual report. GENEROUS. That’s what Shepparton has been labelled after it made a grand debut on GoFundMe's annual "Year In Help" report, marking its place among Australia's top ten most generous cities for 2023. The report, which ranks cities based on per capita donations, is a testament to the growing philanthropic spirit in Shepparton, even amid rising living and housing costs. Shepparton ranked seventh overall while Bundaberg, Queensland, took the top spot as Australia's most generous city for 2023, a position it last held in 2020. The report also highlighted an unprecedented level of generosity across Australia, with a record 1.4 million donations made on GoFundMe in 2023.

Page 4 – The Adviser Australia No.1:1692 Wednesday, December 13, 2023

GoFundMe's recent revelation that one in five Australians have donated via its platform underscores the nation's giving spirit. Over 5.2 million Australians have collectively raised more than $820 million for various causes through over 9.2 million individual donations. Nicola Britton, Regional Director for GoFundMe Australia, praised the swift response to calls for support in these cities, attributing it to the tight-knit nature of Australian communities. “Sheppa r ton c a n b e proud to b e recognised on this year’s list of most generous cities; as should every person that started, was the beneficiary of, or donated to, a GoFundMe fundraiser or helped

Getting the Hub out of Kyabram LEAVING TOWN... in a blow to the community of Kyabram, their K Hub will close its doors on February, 17 next year. It came as a shock to many in the town, it’s another blow for jobs in the region when the retail giant decided to not renew their lease and close for good. Photo: Carli Lappin

By Aaron Cordy IN A blow to the community of Kyabram, their K Hub will close its doors on February, 17 next year. It came as a shock to many in the town, it’s another blow for jobs in the region when the retail giant decided to not renew their lease and close for good. Kmart chose not to respond to our enquiries but did reply to one concerned member of the Kyabram community who shared their response on social media. “... We hope to continue serving the Kyabram community through our stores in Echuca and Shepparton as well as online. Supporting

our team is also our priority. We are actively working with our thirteen affected team members to offer redeployment into other Kmart stores where we can. We want to thank the Kyabram community for their continued support. To help our customers through the busy Christmas period, there will be no changes to the store’s operations until February next year. We want to thank the community in Kyabram for their ongoing support for Kmart.” The trouble is that half an hour's drive in either direction is not always an option for some in the community. Many of the regular customers are on mobility scooters and have

limited access to the services that would allow them to jump in the car and make the trip when they need a new kettle. “They don’t know what they are doing to this town. People like me on scooters can’t get anywhere, I can’t get on the bus myself. But my main point is the 13 workers there. They know my name, what place knows the customer's name. It's really sad. Melbourne [Kmart Australia] wouldn’t know where Kyabram was.” There is an online partition to save the K Hub on the Kyabram Community Connections Facebook page. Perhaps it’ll be the Christmas miracle many in the town are hoping for.

DRIVING CHANGE… The Victorian Government announces a major road repair blitz for regional areas, including Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley. This initiative is part of a 10 year, $6.6 billion maintenance commitment to improve and future proof local roads. Photo: Aaron Cordy

Roads to recovery R EGIONA L Victoria, including Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley, is set to benefit from a major road repair blitz announced by the Victorian Government. After a year of extreme rain and flooding, the area's damaged roads will finally undergo significant repairs. The majority of the maintenance work will be conducted in regional areas, which have suffered the most damage due to heavy rain and flooding over the past year. The repair blitz is scheduled to be carried out between now and June 2024, as winter conditions subside. This initiative is just the first phase of a 10 -year, $6.6 billion maintenance commitment by the government, with a

focus on "future-proofing" local roads. "We’ve already made record investments in repairing and maintaining our state’s roads," said Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne. "Our new, long-term road maintenance plan will deliver even better targeted works and improved outcomes for Victorians,” "We know we are facing a significant and complex repair program after some of the worst floods in our state’s history – that’s why our plan is backed by a longterm funding commitment and data driven plan to fix our roads.” This latest effort follows a 12 month blitz that saw 370,000 potholes patched and 21,000 signs repaired or replaced.

Shepparton-Mooroopna ranked 3rd least festive city in Australia By Aaron Cordy THE spirit of Christmas means something different to everyone who loves celebrat i ng t he festivities this time of year. But in a shock, Shepparton-Mooroopna has claimed the title of third least festive city in Australia, according to a study conducted by Language and culture experts Preply. The study by Preply examined over 1,000 Christmas-related keywords searched from October 2022 to December 2022 to determine each city's inclination towards festive activities and holiday celebrations. W hat does that mean to the people of Sheppar tonMooroopna at large, with so much cultural diversity in our community with a large Muslim and Sikh Community in the area are we less festive or simply broader in what we celebrate? Preply analysed the search volumes of 1,000+ Christmasrelated queries in Google against 50 of the largest Australian cities

to rank them in terms of their total search interest per 100,000 people.

There is certainly no shortage of Christmas paraphernalia in the stores and decking houses, so

what appears as a negative from the outside may be a sign of the inclusivity of our region.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we reflect on the achievements of 2023, we look forward to the year ahead and what it will bring for our region. continued from front page “THEY deserve to be paid for the work they do and not be expected to work unpaid overtime every shift. They deserve the right to see their families more and to have enough money in their pockets to actually take care of them.” While walking off the job is not an option one of the obvious actions taken by the Vic Police is the slogans painted across patrol cars. There are also more subtle actions taking place in a bid to get the Labor Government back to the table with an open mind, which followed over 50 meetings and more than six months of negotiation with Victoria Police. Parking Patrol cars in front of speed cameras is another of the 19 actions taken to get the

message across. “If the government wants to attack the bottom lines of my members’ household, we’ll attack theirs, by placing police cars beside the highest yielding speed cameras in the state, to warn motorists to slow down before they are forced to contribute to the state’s revenue,” said Mr Gatt. With no sign of the dispute being resolved soon, because of the trickledown nature of their claim. When the Labor Government finishes with the Police negotiations, they have the Ambulance and Teachers unions to contend with, and they don’t want to reward the people who were on the front lines throughout COVID. While the support is high in the broader community, it will make an interesting time on our roads this Christmas.

The program ran for 10 weeks and consisted of a set curriculum taught to students about the dairy industry, either Farm to Plate or Health and Nutrition. They spent three weeks learning about the importance and health benefits of dairy. The students had to design and paint a cow to show all they had learned. Toolamba had previously learnt about the pop art elements of bold colours, black outlines and word explosions in term 2 and decided this would be a great way to paint a bright and engaging cow. After completing a learning journal that showed their journey from start to finish of the program, they sent it off with 6 photos to be judged, getting a "Commended" on their cow, the equivalent to 3rd place. “I am so proud of how enthusiastic and engaged the students were in the program, and how every idea came from them. FIRE RESCUE... By Aaron Cordy GRADE 5 students across the region got some hands on experience of what Greater Shepparton Secondary College has to offer last week when they attended Aspirations Day. Over 600 grade 5 students from 28 schools took part in the fun that showed them pathways they can take with their education. “The aim is to get the grade 5 students to dream big. Then to knuckle down in grade 6 and to really inspire and engage them to

the possibilities and opportunities that open up once they get to secondary school,” said Shepparton Education Plan project manager Jenni Gibson. Latrobe, GOTAFE and Melbourne Uni were on site to talk about pathways for further education once the students leave school. Along with local industries and members of the Shepparton Police and the CFA, the day provided hands on learning for the students. “Our aim is to have real world experience

for the students with a rich array of industry based activities. The pathways are highlighted with Latrobe, GOTAFE, and Melbourne Uni, but then we want to open their eyes to local industries and the opportunities that are here in the Goulburn Valley,” said Ms Gibson. The day was capped off with a BBQ provided by Mooroopna and Shepparton South Rotary Clubs, and the help of many of the GSSC students themselves.

Holly jolly botany Your guide to festive flora AS the yuletide season approaches, Goulburn Valley residents are decking their halls with more than just holly. The festive spirit is in full bloom with a variety of plants that can add a touch of greenery and holiday cheer to your home. Traditional poinsettias, with their vibrant red and green foliage, remain a popular choice. For a touch of elegance, consider adding mistletoe in strategic doorways, inviting holiday smooches from loved ones. Don't overlook the Christmas cactus, which can brighten

up any corner with its colourful blossoms. For those who prefer a more rustic touch, a fresh evergreen wreath or garland not only looks beautiful but also fills your home with a delightful, woodsy aroma. And let's not forget the centrepiece of it all, the Christmas tree, whether you opt for a live tree to plant later or a cut one, make sure to keep it well-watered for lasting freshness. School concerts to celebrate another year

By Aaron Cordy SINGING and dancing will echo through schoolyards and halls across the region with end of year concerts in full swing. The students have been buzzing with anticipation to don their costumes and perform in front of their families and their schoolmates on nights made for fun and laughter. The concerts vary from one school to another, but the general theme of fun

and end of year celebration is sprinkled right across the lot. For the grade 6s it is a fun way to say goodbye to the school that has been a big part of their lives for seven years. While there are naturals who shine on the stages from Foundation up to Grade 6, even the most nervous of youngsters walk away with a massive smile after the night. The nights come together after lots of planning and hard work from teachers, students and parents and are truly a great way to send off another school year.

THRILLING ZOMBIES... Melah Sular, Lylah Megee-McCabe, Lexi Cordy and Macie Chapman of Orrvale Primary School were at their scary best for the end of year school concert. Photos: Aaron Cordy

DANCING THE YEAR AWAY... Charlotte Faller, Stella Scali, Zoe Faller, Louis Davidson, Perry Fazzolari, Dustin Griffiths, Mavrick Walker and Levi Mariner were ready to have some fun on the stage at Orrvale Primary School’s end of year concert.

JUMP INTO ACTION... Freya Bellamy, Isla Kerambrun, Lucy Chapman, Lila Bellamy and Amarlie Velos were rocking out to Van Halen at Orrvale Primary School’s end of year concert.

ENJOYING a summer day is great, but too much sun and heat can be dangerous or even deadly for animals. Pets, like people, are susceptible to the effects of extreme heat. Ensure pets have access to shade and fresh, cool water at all hours of the day and never leave your dog tied up, as they could become tangled or unable to access shade or water. Planting grass and greenery will help keep your backyard cooler if you must keep pets outdoors. Clamshell pools filled with water make a great doggie pool for pets to cool down in and having access to water may attract birdlife to your yard. E xercise dog s du ring t he morning or evening, and be aware of the ground temperature. Roads, footpaths, and even sand can burn your pet’s paw prints. Dogs with bald patches or thin coats may

need sunscreen for added protection. Senior, overweight, thick furred or dogs with pushed-in noses (like pugs, boxers, or bulldogs) carry a greater risk of overheating. Never leave your pet in a car – not even with the windows partway down, not even in the shade, not even for a quick errand. Animals cannot sweat like humans, so they pant to lower their body temperature and heatstroke can happen quickly. If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, move them from the heat immediately and cool their ears, belly and paw pads with cool (but not freezing) water. Once they are stable, take them to a vet immediately as they may be suffering internal damage not visible to you. Remember if it’s too hot for us to stay comfortable in the car, in the yard, or on a walk, it is even hotter for our furry companions.

Championing youth support in Northern Victoria RIKKIE-LEE Tyrrell, Member for Northern Victoria Region, has championed the expansion of the Education First Youth Foyer program into more areas of regional Victoria. This comes after a recent visit to the Shepparton Education First Youth Foyer, where she witnessed first-hand the transformative work of the facility's staff in aiding residents who were previously homeless or sleeping rough. In a question to Housing Minister Harriet Shing in State Parliament, Tyrrell recognised the funding allocation for two new Youth Foyers in Wodonga and Wangaratta, but sought clarity on when additional support funding would be announced.

FOYER-WARD THINKING… Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell, Member for Northern Victoria Region, advocates for the expansion of the Education First Youth Foyer program into more regional areas of Victoria, highlighting the program’s success in transforming the lives of vulnerable young Victorians. Photo: Supplied

Tyrrell drew attention to Infrastructure Victoria’s Strategy 2021-2051 document, which recommended the establishment of additional Youth Foyers in regional Victoria, including Bendigo, Mildura, Morwell and Geelong. She requested a meeting with Ms Shing to discuss the program's future expansion. "The current Youth Foyers in Broadmeadows, Glen Waverley and Shepparton have changed the lives of many vulnerable young Victorians for the better," Tyrrell stated. "With the current housing crisis, it's time this wonderful program is expanded to other regional centres. I look forward to working constructively with Minister Shing to expand this life-changing program."

The Goulburn Valley’s beautiful diversity was showcased at African Community Day AFRICAN COMMUNITY DAY... Waterway update Ten years of scientific monitoring in the Goulburn River has debunked claims that water for the environment causes bank erosion. The research has shown that water for the environment increases native fish populations, provides habitat for platypus and turtles and supports the waterway food chain. Environmental flows also help reduce the impact of low-oxygen blackwater, which kills fish and other aquatic animals. To maximise positive outcomes, water managers consult the Goulburn River

Environmental Water Advisory Group ahead of delivering water. The results of water for the environment are regularly and rigorously evaluated by scientists. Scan the QR code for more information on water for the environment.

By Aaron Cordy SHEPPARTON's vibrant African community was well represented in a celebration of cultural diversity and collaboration when the African Studies Group (ASG) and the University of Melbourne(UM) Chancellery co-hosted an inaugural African Community Day at the UM, Parkville last month. An event aimed to fortify connections between African-Australian communities and the University, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and fostering meaningful dialogue. The Goulburn Valley was also represented by local, Tina Mukasa who was a panellist representing Networking African Australians. “It was a pleasure to be one of the panellists representing Networking African Australians for African Community Day held at UM in late November. I had the opportunity to discuss with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Michael Wesley and Padmini Sebastian Director, Engagement and Partnerships about the key issues faced by the multicultural students,” said Tina Mukasa. “For example, I emphasise the financial burden it has on the disadvantaged students

and their families when students relocate to the metropolitan to complete their tertiary education, however, there isn’t enough financial assistance. When I studied my Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) at Latrobe Uni in Bundoora, I was lucky enough to be supported financially by the Smith Family and my beloved dad Maulidi Mukasa in order to complete my bachelor’s degree. “In addition, as a past alumna of UM Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program, I spoke about the different ways in which the University could engage with multicultural appropriate opportunities for students to enable them to fulfil their dreams and goals.” Well Wise Woman and Notre Dame College student Ayak Padual coordinated the day noting that “It was a wonderful day, we had fun and we learnt a lot about what Melbourne Uni offers,” she said. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Michael Wesley endorsed the idea of making this day an annual occurrence, highlighting the enduring relationship between the UM and the African community.
