Shot in Buyback fightback the dark By Aaron Cordy THERE was movement at the station, for the word had passed around. WATER DELEGATION... The Nationals’ Buyback Fightback Tour passed through Shepparton to assess the impact the Federal Government’s water buybacks will have on the farming communities. From left, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Mental Health Emma Kealy, local water advocate and dairy farmer, Natalie Akers, Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, Dairy farmer, Lloyd Akers, and State Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy. Political heads bring the water buyback fight to state level By Aaron Cordy WATER is always going to settle in the thoughts of many in the Goulburn Valley as the sweat nestles on the brow of a farmer
working her land in an Australian summer. While the buybacks have been pushed through the Federal Parliament, there is still a force in the State Legislative Assembly that
knows how important this resource is and what a devastating effect it will have on the country if it is mismanaged when the next Continued Page 36 drought strikes.

By Aaron Cordy CONGUPNA Primary School had a cleansweep of the Australian-International Model Solar Challenge in Hobart last month. ‘All 4 Cylinders’ took out first place backing up from their first at state level. ‘River Rippers’ improved on their state third place to become outright second. And the 'Surfing Kings’ have climbed from fourth into third
place in what was a massive coop for the school. The grade 5/6 students have showcased the pride of Congupna in what has become a highlight on the calendar of the small school. The students began working on their boats last term, with the regulation length 550mm, and the motor not exceeding $10. Then it was up to the students to design and build
the fastest boat. None of this would have been possible without the support of families and teachers at the school, and sponsors, Rotar y Shepparton, CMV Truck & Bus, Byers Electrical, Caprice Paper, Shepparton Club and SPC Factory Sales, whose financial aid was key to getting the kids across the Bass Strait to compete.

Sale of Crown Land at Victoria Park Lake adjoining the Victoria Lake Caravan Park SHEPPARTON’S beloved Victoria Park Lake, a jewel in the city's crown, is set to experience a transformation. The Nationals Member for Shepparton, Kim O'Keeffe, recently addressed the Land (Revocation of Reservations) Bill 2023 in parliament. This Bill aims to revoke permanent reservations of Crown land at 13 locations across the state, including Victoria Park Lake. The Greater Shepparton City Council has expressed interest in purchasing the Crown land portion of the Victoria Lake Caravan Park, which adjoins the lake. This move is part of a broader plan to refurbish the park to accommodate increasing tourism rates in the region. “Once the Bill is passed, it will kick-start conversations between the government, interested parties, and the public,” said Ms O'Keeffe. She emphasised that the temporary
reservation of the land for public purposes would ensure that the Council retains control over it after revocation. “The Crown land portion of the caravan park at Victoria Park Lake, is located in a prime location at the gateway of the city next to the Shepparton Art Museum which is one of our major tourist attractions that sits on our beautiful lake precinct. The caravan park has been operated by council for more than 60 years,” “There has been significant investment also in the lake precinct over the years, however, the caravan park on the land owned by Greater Shepparton City Council has deteriorated.” Ms O'Keeffe concluded, “This is a good example of Crown land sitting dormant that could be used for public space and activation and an extension of the current offering.”

The Pontiff’s Perspective By Fr Jackson Saunders AN ancient Filipino tradition from the 16th century has provided a blessing to the Shepparton community the past five mornings at the crack of dawn. Misa de Gallo, also known as the ‘Mass of the Rooster,’ is a nine-day novena to prepare for Christmas, which originated in the Philippines. St Brendan’s Parish in Shepparton has been hosting dawn novena Masses each morning at 6am since last Saturday. Each morning there has been a buzz in the Church with live music, prayerful devotion and lavish hospitality at a shared breakfast, which follows. Our community has been blessed. These Masses will continue until Christmas
Eve on Sunday, December 24. Christmas provides an opportunity for us to consider the blessings we have received this year and to give thanks to God for these. It is also an opportunity for us to consider how we can bless others in our words and actions. The words ‘Merry Christmas’ are very popular at this time of year and rightfully so, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the saviour of the world (Luke 2:1-20). Yet, Christmas can also be a challenging time for many. Perhaps, our best Christmas blessing could be an act of kindness through word or deed to someone who may be struggling at this time.

Mid-term report card shows great progress The Shepparton Education Plan is the greatest single investment in the education of our young people, ever. In dollar terms, it’s exceeded $140 million. In “people” terms, it’s brought unprecedented collaboration – we’re harnessing the knowledge, passion and expertise of our community for our young people. And we’re making great progress.
The Shepparton Education Plan in action… Year 5 Bourchier St student Ella is pictured with Furphy’s Engineering apprentice Rhys Sykes. Ella proved a very good welder in this virtual activity at the recent Aspirations Day held at GSSC. Furphy’s was one of 20 local firms collaborating in a day designed to inspire our young people to dream big as they progress through school. As Ella discovered, there is nothing she and her classmates can’t do!
The Mooroopna Children and Families Centre is the state’s cutting-edge model for pre-school care and the only local early learning centre integrated with a primary school – but not for long. In 2026, a new government-run early learning centre will replicate this success at Wilmot Rd Primary School. Our 28 primary schools are collaborating to deliver consistent, quality education

across the sector – so you can be assured your best school is your local school, no matter where you live in Greater Shepparton. Entering its third year at Hawdon St, Greater Shepparton Secondary College has built a proud culture among students, staff and the school community – with more subject choice, career pathways and success in the classroom and on the sporting field. Meanwhile, our former secondary school sites are destined to deliver community benefit with early years, post-secondary and special education uses. In higher education, GOTAFE, La Trobe and Melbourne Universities are working together to ensure there is no “wrong door” for our students. At this midway point of the Shepparton Education Plan, we thank the community for what has been a transformational journey. Together, we are delivering the greater education outcomes and life opportunities our young people deserve.

continued from front page WHILE there is a Strategic Action Plan (SAP) to relocate the wild Brumbies from Barmah Forest and Alpine National Park, the reality is the former Andrews Government and Parks Victoria have little interest in investing the time and resources to follow through on SAP. Instead, they have actively turned a blind eye to the shootings or maliciously orchestrated them by hiring contract hunters to go into the forest and shoot the brumbies at night. August last year the Victoria Parliament ordered the Labor Government to stop their extermination of the brumby population, by passing a motion in the Legislative Council of the Parliament, with Coalition MPs and crossbench MPs voting in favour of cancelling the aerial and ground shooting of brumbies. T he motion d rew at tention to t he Government’s failure to adhere to its management plan which included publishing updated population counts and rehoming the wild horses. Yet a year later what was an abhorrently open slaughter campaign against the brumbies has now been moved to the cover of darkness. The number of brumbies in the Barmah area also seems to have declined in the wake of last year's floods according to locals, but the estimated 540 horses in the SAP already appeared to have been an exaggeration to inflate the numbers and push an agender to kill part of

Australia's heritage. Where the debate gets confusing on the front of Parks Victoria is their claim to want to keep and protect the natural environment of the Barmah wetlands, but in their list of feral animals is the eastern grey kangaroo. An animal so native to Australia it is on the coat of arms. Parks Victoria has no plans to cull kangaroos, nor have they assessed the impact a strong mob can have on the area, as they are only focused on brumbies. A study that blatantly ignores elements that affect the outcomes of their findings is not only abhorrently incorrect
but morally wrong when you are using these findings to mass kill animals. In the end, the issue is preserving the native flora and fauna, but littering a national park with dead horses can only harm the ecosystem. An abundance of rotting corpses will be chum in the water to more dangerous pests like feral pigs, foxes, dogs and cats, which already has a destructive effect on native wildlife. Once these primal feeding machines have run out of horse offal to scavenge, they will turn on the local wildlife and the risk of animal extinction in the area will be far more difficult to mitigate.

A class act I N a year marked by exceptional academic achievement, Cobram Anglican Grammar School (AGS) celebrates the outstanding ATAR results of its 2023 Year 12 cohort. Four students excelled, achieving an ATAR rank over 90; Cody Lincoln topped the list with an ATAR of 99.55, followed by Martin Kong (98.05), Cadence Pang (97.85) and Harrison Brooker (92). Principal Keith Willett commended the students, highlighting the school's pride in all its Year 12s. "Year 12 is a demanding year, and we celebrate every student who received their results today," he said. Cody Lincoln, crowned School Dux, followed up his perfect 2022 Physics score with impressive 2023 Mathematics scores. Other students also shone, with Kong, Pang and Brooker achieving high scores in Mathematics Methods, English and Physics. Mr. Willett praised the shared effort of students, teachers, and parents, attributing the school's bestever ATAR results to their collective commitment. He also highlighted the school’s readiness to cater to diverse learning needs through new programs in 2024. Cody Lincoln, still in shock, expressed his gratitude for the supportive community. His advice for next year's Year 12s? "Persist, even when things get tough. Remember, you're not alone in this journey."

Together with my staff Tamara, Katerina and Rowan I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous 2024. Christmas is a special time of the year. It is a time of joy and love as we join with our family and friends to celebrate the festive season. For many it is a time for exchanging presents, endless amounts of food and cricket in the backyard. However it is also a time of contrast and unfortunately for some, Christmas can be a lonely or stressful time. During this special time, I ask that you consider contributing to those in need or check in on those who may be alone or vulnerable. The greatest gift you can give someone this festive season is the gift of kindness and friendship. However you celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas full of goodwill and happiness.
The festive season is a wonderful time of year where we can join with family and friends to celebrate Christmas and look to the year ahead. From the giving and receiving of presents to too much food for Christmas lunch, it is a special time for most of us. Sadly, this Christmas will be a lonely time for some people in our community and my thoughts are with those less fortunate or are currently doing it tough. It is important that we reach out with kindness and good wishes to these people, and I ask that you extend the Christmas cheer to our vulnerable friends and neighbours. After a busy first year representing our community in State Parliament, I am looking forward to spending some time with my family over the festive season. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and safe and prosperous New Year.
Best wishes, Wendy Lovell Member for Northern Victoria
Best wishes, Rikki-Lee Tyrell Member for Victorian Northern Region
Merry Christmas from my family to yours As the year comes to an end, I reflect on the past 12 months. I am so very proud of the caring and giving communities in which we live. There are so many ways that we can share the joy of Christmas by donating to the variety of charities that will ensure Christmas is a time of joy for all. This Christmas season, stop and make time for special memories with your loved ones and be safe during this holiday time.

As the year comes to an end, I reflect on the past 12 months. It has been such an honour to represent the Shepparton district in the State Parliament and to support my electorate. I am embracing the role with the same commitment and determination I have always done in serving our communities and my door is open. It is a joy to be part of such a wonderful, caring and united region. It is so important to support local businesses and those in need so that Christmas can be a joy for all. You can support many local Christmas charities and Christmas donations can also be dropped into my office at 318 Wyndham Street, Shepparton. This Christmas season, stop and make time for special memories with your loved ones and be safe during this holiday time. Merry Christmas from my family to yours.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! There’s tinsel on the trees, crowds in local shops and smiles on children’s faces – it’s Christmas and however you decide to celebrate, it’s a special time of year. Our amazing communities continue to go from strength to strength, in their recovery from the challenges of 2022 and the opportunities of the future. I will continue to work collaboratively to ensure our voice is heard in Canberra, and that the Federal Government understands what it needs to do to ensure we can continue to thrive. This Christmas I encourage you to shop local. Our region has an endless range of goods and services on offer and buying locally means you’re also giving a gift to regional businesses and supporting jobs. My office is here to help all constituents with Federal Government issues, so don’t hesitate to reach out. My office will be closed from December 22nd and will reopen on January 2nd. I hope you have a safe and happy holiday, filled with lasting memories with family and friends. I look forward to meeting with many of you in 2024.
Wishing you a
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
There’s just a few days left until Santa arrives so if you’re LEST WE FORGET on the hunt for a last minute Christmas present, there are plenty of great businesses across our region where you can find the perfect gift for your loved ones. Buying a gift locally is a gift to local businesses!

AS the festive season approaches, Shepparton residents are gearing up for the joy and merriment that Christmas brings. However, amid the excitement of gift-giving and holiday feasts, it's easy to overlook the hidden costs that come with the season. From the extra groceries for holiday meals to the increased energy bills from festive lights, Christmas can put a significant strain on the wallet. Even small expenses
like wrapping paper and cards can add a surprising amount to the Christmas bill. Travel expenses to visit loved ones can also add up, especially for those with family spread across the country. Being aware of these hidden costs can help locals plan better and avoid a financial hangover in the New Year. So, as we deck the halls and trim the tree, let's also remember to budget wisely to ensure the season remains merry and bright.

NOBODY HAS TO BE ALONE THIS CHRISTMAS THIS Christmas, no one in Shepparton needs to celebrate alone, thanks to the "Christmas for Those Alone Lunch" (CTFA). The event, scheduled for the 25th of December at the Macintosh Centre Shepparton Showgrounds, aims to provide a warm and joyous Christmas experience for those who might otherwise spend the holiday season in solitude. The CTFA team recognises the power of community and is reaching out to various local groups to help make this event a success. As per Council requirements, all volunteers will need to attend an induction session before Christmas Day to familiarise themselves with their roles and the
expectations of the CTFA and the City of Greater Shepparton, who kindly provide the hall and meet insurance requirements each year. Three induction sessions are planned for general volunteers, while kitchen volunteers with a Food Handler Certificate will have a separate session. The induction sessions are scheduled for December 22 and 23. Kitchen volunteers are requested to bring their current Food Handlers Certificate for verification. Let's come together and make this Christmas a memorable one for all. For more information email: cftalone@ gmail.com or phone: 0456 125 237.

CHRISTMAS FLICK PICKS WITH Christmas just around the corner, there's no better way to get into the festive spirit than by curling up with a good Christmas movie. The Adviser team has shared their favourite Christmas films, offering a selection that's as diverse as our Shepparton community. For those who like a bit of action with their Christmas cheer, "Die Hard" is a must-watch (yes, it's a Christmas film). If you're looking for a good laugh, "Jingle All The Way" and "The Grinch" (Jim Carrey version) are sure to tickle your funny bone. For t he roma nt ic s , "L ove Actually" and "Last Christmas" offer heartwarming tales of love during the holiday season. And of course, Christmas wouldn't be complete without the family favourite "Home Alone". So, grab your popcorn, snuggle up, and let these festive films bring Christmas cheer to your home!

and a Happy New Year CARING FOR YOUR PET THIS CHRISTMAS
GOOD INTENTIONS, BAD IDEA: WHY PETS MAKE BAD PRESENTS
E AC H yea r, a n i mal shelters a re inundated with cats and dogs that were given as a gift over Christmas. Rescued animals can be fantastic additions to a family, but not when they’re given to unsuspecting or unprepared recipients. Here’s why: A pet is for life, not just for Christmas Yes , k it tens a nd puppies look adorable under the tree, but deciding to take on a pet is an important decision that requires a lifetime commitment. Remember, a new cat or dog could be part of the family for 15 years or more. The RSPCA estimates that the first-year ownership cost ranges from $2,350 to $5,220 per canine, to around $25,000 over a lifetime spent on food, toys, insurance, vaccinations and vet bills. Worst. Gift. Ever That cute puppy won’t seem like such a treat when they chew up a cherished item or their new kitten tears up the
tree and curtains… Even when pets are healthy and well-behaved, they require maintenance and care. They require lots of time, patience and money, which can be scarce during the holidays. The consequences can be devastating Many shelters reach their capacity within the first weeks of the new year, when a storm of surrendered pets hits after Christmas, leaving shelter workers to face the heartbreaking prospect of euthanising healthy, friendly, loving pets because of local of space and resources to care for them all. I f you h ave a loved one t h at i s prepa re d to m a ke a l i felong commitment to an animal, and who has plenty of time, money and patience to give, consider gifting them a gift voucher towards a pet from your local shelter. This way, they can decide which animal is their best match when the time is right.

THAT’S A WRAP… Please do not gift pets for Christmas and find other ways to treat your animal loving friends and family this year, such as by donating to a shelter or gifting a voucher from an animal shelter. Photo: Supplied

CHRISTMAS is a time to over indulge but be careful of what your dog is getting into, as many foods and drinks are harmful to our furry friends. Chocolate and alcohol are perhaps the most obvious substances that are dangerous to dogs. Chocolate should not be kept within easy reach of dogs and no pet should be exposed to alcohol. Traces of either can be found in popular Christmas dishes, like fruit cake or in Christmas puddings. Christmas puddings and fruit cake are made with a cocktail of ingredients that are not dog friendly. Raisins, grapes, and sultanas have all been linked to acute renal failure, and dogs that digest these can develop kidney failure 72 hours later. In addition, as much as you hate to waste
turkey or chicken bones, and your doggy is drooling, please, do not give cooked bones to dogs either. Other cooked bones are also dangerous and very sharp, and can lodge in the gums. Other toxic foods to avoid giving your dog or cat include garlic and onions, avocado, lollies or gum and peanut butter containing xylitol, macadamia nuts, too much cheese and other dairy products. Warning signs to look out for include vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive drooling or frothing, restlessness, increased urination, tremors or seizures, or wobbling in your pet. Always take them straight to the vet or emergency pet hospital if you suspect they have snuck in a toxic treat or ingested a foreign object.
From our family to yours, GV Vets wish you a Merry Christmas! 100% locally owned and operated vet clinic and hospital, located in Shepparton CBD, providing vet services to pets and farm animals in the Goulburn Valley region. Veterinary Nurse

and a Happy New Year
SIZZLING IDEAS FOR AN AUSSIE CHRISTMAS BBQ I N Australia, Christmas isn't just about tinsel and Christmas trees - it's also about firing up the barbecue and enjoying a feast under the summer sun. As the aroma of sizzling snags fills the air, families across Shepparton will gather around the barbie, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The options for a Christmas barbecue are endless. Traditional snags and steaks are always a hit, but why not mix things up this year? Fresh prawns, fish, or even a whole salmon can make for a deliciously Aussie Christmas feast. For the vegetarians and vegans, why not grill up some marinated tofu steaks, veggie burgers, or stuffed portobello mushrooms? Even a whole cauliflower can be transformed on the barbie into a deliciously smoky and satisfying main. And don't forget the side dishes - a fresh garden salad, corn on the cob, and a hearty potato salad can complement your barbecue perfectly. For dessert, consider giving the traditional Christmas pudding a miss and go for something more suited to the Aussie heat. A classic pavlova topped with fresh summer fruits, or a refreshing watermelon and mint salad can be the perfect end to your Christmas barbecue. And while we all love a good Aussie barbecue, it's also important to remember safety in the heat. Stay hydrated, especially if you're the one manning the barbecue. Make sure food is properly stored to avoid spoilage - remember, bacteria can multiply quickly in hot weather. And never leave the barbecue unattended when it's lit. Also, consider the comfort of your guests. Set up a shaded area for seating, have plenty of cold drinks on hand, and perhaps even a few fans to keep the air circulating. So, fire up the barbie Shepparton, and get ready to enjoy a classic Aussie Christmas! With a bit of planning and a dash of creativity, your Christmas barbecue can be a feast to remember.

BUYBACK FIGHTBACK... Members of The National Party met at SPC to discuss the effect water shortages will have on one of the largest food producers in the region. From Left: Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy, Head of Media for the Nationals, Mark Steven, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Mental Health, Emma Kealy, Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, and SPC Chairman, Mr Hussein Rifai. Buyback fightback tour hits the region continued from front page STATE Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Emma Kealy and Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy, met with Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, and Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell at local water advocate and dairy farmer, Natalie Akers’ property in Tallygaroopna and SPC in Shepparton last week as part of the Nationals Buyback Fightback Tour, to help gain an understanding of what effects the buyback will have on farming communities. The Nationals' Buyback Fightback Tour has encompassed stops in Wodonga, Yarrawonga, Shepparton, Kyabram, Robinvale and Mildura in Victoria's northwest. Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Mental Health, Emma Kealy was on sight to see the impact the buybacks will have on communities.
“The State Government is saying that they won’t sign up to the plan but we’ve now got federal legislation that is through, which has taken out the socio-economic criteria, which means that there isn’t a measure to say, well, if you take the water out of the region that it will have a community impact, and that’s a very, very big problem,” said Ms Kealy. “The only options the minister [Labor Minister for Water, Harriet Shing] really has available is to take the matter to the high court and challenge it that way. Which is unlikely to be successful and would cost a huge amount of taxpayer money. What I'm most concerned about is Victoria is broke, Labor can’t manage money, they can’t manage projects and I can’t see how they are going to be able to manage to protect the water resources in Victoria and protect our local growers and jobs.” For dairy farmers like Natalie Akers, the thought of selling water is something she doesn’t want to contemplate as she hopes

to raise generational farmers on her property. The effects of the buybacks on the future of agriculture is something she won’t risk for her farm because despite the recent floods she understands the next drought is potentially around the corner. “As farmers, we hedge our bets, and we manage the risk of the climate. So, when times are dry times and things are getting drier and the pool of water that’s available to farmers is becoming less and less, and the worry is how much food will farmers be able to grow,” said Ms Akers. Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe today joined the Goulburn Valley leg of the tour. “It’s really important just to keep fighting. We lost over 50% of our dairy farms across the region which is significant. For a generation farm here, they want to keep it for future generations and keep doing what they do so well and producing food that’s feeding a nation,” said Ms O’Keeffe.
