By Dillon Shelley IN the heart of Shepparton, a tale of unexpected generosity and the spirit of Christmas has brought warmth and cheer to the community. Rebecca Doherty, known affectionately as Bec, a single mother of

two energetic boys, was left astounded by a generous act of goodwill that completely transformed her festive season. Bec, whose sons are avid readers and aspiring YouTubers with dreams as big as their personalities, had been diligently
saving to pay off her lay-by Christmas gifts at Big W. With a balance of just over $500 left, she was prepared to pay off the amount remaining in full, ensuring her boys would have a memorable Christmas. Continued Page 12

Scouting out their next camping trip Freemasons give donations to local Scouts Group By Aaron Cordy THE spirit of giving came early for the Kialla 1st Scouts and the North Shepparton 1st Scouts with a generous donation from the Freemasons of Shepparton. The donation comes in conjunction with the Freemasons Foundation of Victoria. The Local Lodge raises money every year, then the Foundation comes up with a 4-to-1 matching system for the eligible community group.
The Kialla Scouts brought some muchneeded camping gear with their donation. A pair of solar powered lights will help when setting up camp as they usually end up doing so at night. A couple of tarps for floor mats and storage tubs to transport food, the Scouts will be able to cook on their new gas stoves. The North Shepparton 1st Scouts received a new trailer to make their next trip a lot easier to manage, organise and pack before they load

Prodigal son returns home to the Lion’s den SFNC President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club is excited to welcome Mundy home in what is a huge boost for the club. “It’s an amazing signing for the club and we can’t wait to see Dave back at Kings Park where it all began,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Dave is an incredibly humble person and has made clear for a while his desire to come back to Seymour and get back to country footy. “Having one of the most experienced footballers in the history of the game trotting round in the GVL is going to be a great boost for our club and the competition more broadly.”
By Aaron Cordy THE Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) have had a massive recruiting coop with the return of former 376-game AFL superstar, David Mundy for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season. Mundy was an All-Australian in 2015, won Fremantle’s Best and Fairest in 2010 and captained the club in 2016, but his greatest football achievement was delivering the devastating blow to the Richmond Tigers in the dying moments of not one but two can’t-lose games, which left Tigers supporters and coaches baffled.

My office is closed from December 22nd and will re-open on January 2nd. Please remember my office is here to help all constituents with Federal Government matters, so don’t hesitate to reach out in 2024.

Copies of my 2024 calendar are still available at my Shepparton office and can be picked up when the doors re-open on January 2nd. Sun, fun, and prevention Reducing cancer risks this summer AS the summer sun shines over Shepparton, Cancer Council Victoria urges residents to remain vigilant in their efforts to reduce cancer risks while basking in the season's festivities. Recent data from the Victorian Cancer Registry reveals that cancer accounts for roughly one-third of deaths in Victoria, with many cases being preventable. Cancer Council Victoria's Head of Prevention and Adjunct Associate Professor, Craig Sinclair, reminds residents of the importance of maintaining healthy habits. "As people enjoy their summer breaks, now is an opportune time to form new habits or reinforce existing ones from the past year to cut
down the risk of cancer for you or loved ones," he said. Key preventive measures include staying SunSmart, limiting alcohol and sugary drink intake, staying active, eating healthily, and quitting smoking and vaping. "Let this summer and festive season be one of good health, where preventive measures become second nature to everyone in Victoria so we can reduce the risk of cancer in the future," Mr Sinclair added. Resources for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and quitting smoking are available at www.livelighter.org.au and www. quit.org.au respectively.

THE HOLIDAY season is here, and with it comes the plea for road users in Shepparton and across Australia, to prioritise safety. This call to action comes in response to Australian Government figures revealing over 1,250 fatalities on Australian roads in the year ending November. "Please drive with care this holiday season – this season should be filled with joy, not sorrow. Deaths are not just a statistic; they are someone's parent,

sibling, colleague, or cherished friend," urges Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government Minister Catherine King. The plea extends to all road users, whether in vehicles, on bicycles, or on foot. Simple measures such as avoiding distractions, taking regular breaks on long drives, adhering to speed limits, and adjusting to road conditions can significantly reduce risks.

The bug stops here!
New test to protect our apples and pears RESEARCHERS have developed a new tool in the fight against the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), a devastating pest that could wreak havoc on local apple and pear industries if it were to breach Australian borders. The bug, native to China, Japan, and Taiwan, has already established itself as a significant pest in North America and Europe. The new tool, an environmental DNA (eDNA) test, will assist with rapid detection of the bug, which has been increasingly found at Australian ports over the past few years. The bug is known to 'hitchhike' on plant material and hide in cargo of all kinds, including vehicles and machinery. Dr Mackenzie Lovegrove, a molecular geneticist and field
scientist at EnviroDNA, explained, "The eDNA technology will be available for use alongside existing surveillance mechanisms at the border to aid surveillance efforts, as well as incursion response activities should the bug be intercepted outside Australian ports." The eDNA test was developed by researchers at Cesar Australia, EnviroDNA, and Plant and Food Research New Zealand. It is a targeted test that is highly sensitive and specific, meaning it only detects BMSB and not other closely related insects. The test will be a significant addition to our defences against this catastrophic 'hitchhiker', ensuring a safe and secure future for our apple and pear industries.

WATER REPORT… Goulburn Valley Water’s Annual Water Outlook offers a secure short-term forecast for the region’s water supply, despite increasing climate variability. The report reveals no expected water restrictions for the next year. Photo: The Adviser
Annual water outlook WATER. It’s the lifeblood of the region, and Goulburn Valley Water has recently published its Annual Water Outlook, offering a comprehensive analysis of the region's water supply and demand for the next two years. The report details the complex interplay of climate patterns, water storage levels, and usage trends within our community. The outlook is largely positive, with the region's water supplies projected to remain secure in the short-term. This is largely due to the contributions of the Goulburn and Murray River systems, which boast significant water storages managed by Goulburn Murray Water
and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. However, the report also notes the increasing variability of Victoria's climate, with a drying trend and rising temperatures expected to lead to more frequent and severe droughts in the future. These changes may affect the water availability in our region, despite the current security of our supply systems. The towns that rely on rainfall-dependent rivers, including Woods Point, Strathbogie, Merrijig, Sawmill Settlement, and Yea, are not expected to face water restrictions in the next year. The same holds true for towns with Goulburn Valley Water storages, such as
Broadford-Kilmore, Euroa, and Violet Town, among others. The report also includes a climate outlook for the first quarter of 2024, indicating a warmer start to the year with average to drier
BIGGEST
rainfall conditions. This forecast, provided by Agriculture Victoria, underscores the need for continued vigilance and careful water management in the face of changing climate patterns.

Taking preventive measures is crucial to protect yourself and your loved ones from mosquito-borne diseases," says Dr Will Cross, Clinical Director at Goulburn Valley Public Health Unit. To ensure a safe and enjoyable summer outdoors, follow these essential tips: Use mosquito repellent: Apply repellent containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin. Reapply as directed, especially if using
sunscreen simultaneously. Cover up: Wear light-coloured, loosefitting long-sleeved shirts, long pants and covered footwear with socks when outdoors. Install f ly screens: Use screens on doors and windows and repair any holes to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. If necessary, use mosquito nets indoors. Eliminate breeding sites: Remove stagnant water from containers, old tires and buckets around your property where mosquitoes could breed. Consider vaccination: Residents in Greater Shepparton, Moira, Strathbogie, or Benalla local government areas, seasonal workers, or those working at a piggery can get vaccinated for Japanese encephalitis. Contact your pharmacist or doctor for vaccination appointments. "These steps will significantly reduce the risk of mosquito bites and associated illnesses, allowing everyone to enjoy the outdoors safely," added Dr Will Cross.

C ONC E R N S h ave b e en ra is ed by Shepparton District's Nationals Member, Kim O'Keeffe over the escalating number of compensation claims for vehicle damage due to substandard road conditions in Victoria, particularly highlighting the shockingly low number of claims being paid. Recent data indicates a staggering 414% surge in these claims over three years, with claims in regional Victoria, including Shepparton, leaping from 80 in 2020/21 to 463 in 2022/23. In spite of this, only two of the 731 regional claims during this period were deemed payable, underscoring a systemic issue in addressing road maintenance and compensation. The situation is exacerbated by significant
cuts in road maintenance funding, with a 45% reduction since 2020, leading to a considerable deterioration in road conditions, particularly in regional areas, contributing to the increased frequency of vehicle damage. "The Minister's attribution of road damage solely to flood events is not only an oversimplification but also overlooks the fact that many of the affected areas experienced no flood impact," said Ms O'Keeffe. "The fact that so few claims are being compensated, despite the clear increase in road-related damage, is unacceptable. Our communities, especially in regional Victoria, are suffering due to a broader trend of neglect in road maintenance."

The lay-by that touched many hearts HOWEVER, during her visit to the store, she was met with an unexpected surprise. As she approached the counter to make her payment, the staff member revealed that her lay-by had been paid off, leaving only a single dollar left to settle. The news left Bec in shock. "I was flabbergasted," B ec recalls, "I questioned the staff member, and they told me a young couple had come in and paid off my lay-by, along with several others in town."
This mysterious couple, who chose to remain anonymous, had decided to spread Christmas cheer and kindness in a truly remarkable way. Bec was so moved by the gesture that she was brought to tears when recounting the story to her best friend. "I was floored, and almost cried right there in the store, but when I called my best friend to share the news, I couldn't hold back the tears." "T h e i mp a c t of t h i s g e s t u r e i s
enormous," Bec explains, her voice filled with emotion. "It's not just the financial relief, but the spirit of giving that has touched our hearts. It means we can do more things together as a family over the holidays." Bec hopes that by sharing her story, the young couple will see how grateful she is for their act of kindness. "This is the purest form of giving and joy. I cannot thank them enough," she says, her voice
brimming with gratitude. Despite the challenges that raising children as a single parent can bring, Bec remains eternally optimistic, kind and selfless. It's clear that no one could be a more deserving recipient of such a gesture. This story serves as a powerful reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well in Shepparton, and it's the kindness and generosity of its residents that truly make it a special place to live.
Dreaming of your next great epic fantasy read By Aaron Cordy HAUNTED by dreams of Phoenixes and Spiders from before she could remember, Theo is about to discover she is part of hidden worlds spanning time, in the fantastic debut novel by Indi authors Benny Charles and Alex Robinson, The Phoenix and the Spider, the first book in the Children of the Aether series. What began as a gift of a short story from Benny to Alex soon morphed into a series of chapters in an ever-growing book... three books... five books. The dark fantasy story unfolds in the modern world and cuts into the realms of history from ancient Mesopotamia and pre-WW1 Serbia. The pair have been touring their book at libraries including Shepparton and Euroa, which is a far cry from the adventures they had around the globe which helped inspire The Phoenix and the Spider, delighting fantasy readers and history buffs alike. Community effort to restore and rehome Hammer Memorial THE Andrew Hammer Memorial Pavilion was erected in 2006 by CME Construction for Old Students Cricket Club and the Hammer family, in memory of Andrew after he tragically lost his life the previous year. It's a combined effort from many groups that has taken four years, but the pavilion has found its new home at the Kialla Recreation Reserve. “Getting it back up after a couple of years sitting on the ground over here, we are rapt as a family,” said Ross Hammer, father of Andrew about the reconstruction of the Pavilion. “It’s very well received by the cricket club and Kialla Park... When you drive in and see the sign, I think it just looks like it’s meant to be here, it just sits here really well.”
The removal and reassembly were a joint effort that would not have been possible without people like Richard Bryce from the Education Department and building companies Hansen Yuncken, Quicklift Crane Hire, Mawsons Concrete Shepparton, S i ncl a i r a nd Ro one y Pa i nt i ng a nd Decorating, Dulux Shepparton, J.R and J.D Baldi Pty Ltd, AH Landscaping, Syndicate Engineering, Cobram Plu mbing and Engineering and Coates Hire Shepparton. It makes you feel really good to be part of this,” said Chris Limosani of Hansen Yuncken.

Wetlands on the way to recovery after floods By Natasha Fujimoto VICTORIA Park Lake is Shepparton’s picturesque heart for recreation and events. It is also home to vibrant wetlands where a series of ponds sustain a bountiful ecosystem brimming with native birds, plants and aquatic life. During the October 2022 floods, the wetlands were engulfed in blackwater, a wash of sediment and organic material that runs off riverbanks and floodplains during deluge to deplete the water quality of affected waterways threatening plant and aquatic life as well as other animals.
WITH great excitement and anticipation, Foundation classes across the state have completed their first week at school! With kindergartens and primary schools long working to ensure a smooth transition, there is ample families can also do at home to support their little ones as the new reality takes hold. Impressed with the way her own Foundation class have already settled in at Gutherie Street Primary School, Carlyn Giles said, “Establishing good routines at home is key for building children’s stamina at school, with strong sleep routines and a goodnight’s rest essential.

Having published, Such Is Life in 1903 and famous for touting, ‘everyone can write at least one good story,’ The Furphy Literary Awards were established in 1992 in the author’s honour and have since gone on to be one of the most esteemed and lucrative writing competitions in the country.

Youth volunteers aid flood recovery efforts By Brittany Drysdale LAST year, significant flooding left local businesses, homes, people, and areas devastated. Over 8 months later, the impact of the floods is still surmountable in the community. Selfless volunteers have worked around the clock to restore communities, including the altruistic volunteers from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), known as The Big Lift. The Big Lift was launched by the university in 2010 and was founded on the philosophy of ‘paying it forward’. By organising unique volunteering-based events, the organisation aims to demonstrate the joy and fulfilment that comes from giving back to others.
AUGUST
Marching to the beat of the Goulburn Valley By Aaron Cordy A twirl, a hop and a march brought seven teams from as far as Melbourne and Mt Gambier, SA to the region, as the Greater Valley Calisthenics team hosted the first competition of the year on the first weekend of August, 2023 in Shepparton and Mooroopna. Ranging from Tinies to Master, competing in solo and team events, it was the Subs Juniors who walked away with the prize. Competing in Rods, Clubs, Free Arm, March, Aesthetics and a Song and Dance section, the girls aged between 8-10 from the region make up the SUB Junior team. Finishing with a 5th, a 3rd, two 2nds and two 1sts, they were the overall comp winners in their age group.

SEPTEMBER
A come back for the ages By Aaron Cordy THREE last-quarter goals from Ramadan Yze drove the fight-back, leading Shepparton United (SU) to an unlikely GVL Reserves Grand Final victory against the undefeated powerhouse Seymour last Sunday. Breaking a ten-year Reserve’s Grand Final drought, SU appeared to be on their knees at the end of last season when they were smacked by a whopping 200 points in their last game of the season, by a Seymour which was unstoppable. At the start of the 2023 season SU was forced to forfeit games because they couldn’t field a side. Then other weeks played with only 16 players.

Passion driving a Halley's comet's gift to Earth giving nature EACH year, the Earth intersects with Halley’s Comet trail twice, with the second encounter giving birth to the Orionids meteor shower. The Orionids typically produce meteors at a rate of about 20 per hour at their peak, and these are notably swift and luminous. The annual shower, which Goulburn Valley residents are perfectly situated to view, is a cosmophile’s delight due to the fragments of Halley’s comet it contains, a celestial body that graces us every 76 years.
GOOD habits formed at youth make all the difference. Shepparton’s own youths are proving this to be true with the Rotaract Club of Goulburn Murray bringing together like-minded individuals who are dedicated to making positive change in their community.
WHEN young people glance up from their smartphones and the drudge of social media and selfie culture to open their passionate voices to the local and broader community, it can spark an opportunity to build something great for everyone. For newly appointed Rotaract Club of Goulburn Murray (RCGM) President, Alison White, it is community-mindedness and her giving nature that has driven her life.
GENEROUS. That’s what Shepparton has been labelled after it made a grand debut on GoFundMe’s annual “Year In Help” report, marking its place among Australia’s top ten most generous cities for 2023. The report, which ranks cities based on per capita donations, is a testament to the growing philanthropic spirit in Shepparton, even amid rising living and housing costs. Shepparton ranked seventh overall while Bundaberg, Queensland, took the top spot as Australia’s most generous city for 2023, a position it last held in 2020. The report also highlighted an unprecedented level of generosity across Australia, with a record 1.4 million donations made on GoFundMe in 2023.
