ATP Pro serves praise for Shepparton courts By Dillon Shelley JOSH Charlton, the number one seed in the recent Goulburn Valley Open and a native of Traralgon, recently returned to his roots after spending five years in the United States where he was studying and playing tennis. Charlton, an ATP pro, has made waves in the local tennis scene by winning the men’s singles
and doubles at the Goulburn Valley Open without dropping a set in either. Charlton, originally from Traralgon, spent five years in the United States for college and tennis before returning to Australia. The ATP pro now splits his time between his hometown and Melbourne. Despite the pace change, he is enjoying being back on home soil.
"I'm a Traralgon boy, but based in Melbourne a little bit, just practicing and stuff like that. It's a different speed, being back home again. But it's been good, although I've still been on the move a lot with my playing schedule,” Charlton said in a recent interview Continued Page 8 with The Adviser.

By Aaron Cordy GENEROUS hearts can be missed in this busy world where everyone is trying to make it through the day of their own hectic lives. In Shepparton Declo Bisimwa founder of Masomo Mbele (School First) African Australian Youth Leadership Foundation (MM), and his wife Sifa Consolate Delco, have shown in a world of turmoil there still lives a spark of compassion and love in our community. The pair reached into their own pockets to provide food to 120 children in need facing food scarcity during Christmas in Nakivale Refugee Camp, Uganda, with the aid of MM, which has members in Shepparton and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as volunteers in Nakivale Refugee Camp. “We had so many challenges and obstacles, but we also achieved many things last year. That’s why we wanted to help others and show our gratitude to God for everything he had done for our family,” said Delco. “Hundreds of thousands of refugee orphans, children, youth and women in Nakivale Refugee Camp are facing unimaginable challenges - leaving behind their homes, and families and adjusting to a completely different reality. By extending a helping hand, we have the potential to uplift their spirits, offer hope, and provide a source of comfort amidst their struggles.” Masomo Mbele (School First) - African Australian Youth Leadership Foundation is a local community-based organisation that aims to inspire and empower our local community to contribute in a meaningful way to improve the lives of those living without hope. They provide specialised services to African and Australian children, youth, parents, and the community in Greater Shepparton. “We strongly encourage everyone, local organisations who would like to help children and women in Nakivale Refugee Camp to reach

Million-dollar pledge for First Nations A SIGNIFICANT step toward bolstering support for First Nations people and enhancing regional higher education access, equity and opportunity has been taken by La Trobe University. The University has pledged over $1M to establish a thriving partnership with Munarra Limited over the next three years. This investment includes five new proposa ls a mong a tot a l of seven commitments. These include scholarships for all Indigenous students at the Shepparton campus, a fully funded role for student engagement, support, and recruitment, a guaranteed three-year revenue share for Munarra, and Munarra being chosen as the preferred partner for cultural awareness
training for La Trobe staff. "The commitments reflect the confidence we have in Munarra, its vision and our partnership," said vice-chancellor professor John Dewar AO. He emphasised La Trobe's commitment to investing in initiatives that will help both institutions achieve their collective ambitions. Uncle Paul Briggs OAM, executive director of The Kaiela Institute, welcomed La Trobe’s funding pledge, stating it will deliver tangible benefits to the communities they serve. Associate professor, Michael Donovan, La Trobe University’s pro vice-chancellor (Indigenous), noted that this is an exciting development for the whole community.

Dr Danielle Wright AS the fire season looms, predicted to be hotter and drier than recent years, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging Victorians to become 'citizen scientists' and contribute vital information about the state's fire risk. Dr Danielle Wright, CFA Remote Sensing Analyst, highlighted the need for more observers to provide readings of grass curing, especially in the North-East, North-West and South-West regions. "Our volunteer grassland observers are an incredibly valuable resource that helps to

inform a lot of our decision-making over the fire season," she said. Satellite imagery, while crucial, can overestimate or underestimate curing levels. This is where grassland observers come in, adjusting satellite readings to provide more accurate information about fire risk. Melissa Hughes, a volunteer with Wattle Glen Fire Brigade and a grassland observer, praised the ease of the online training module. "I love the data and the science that goes into this grassland observation," she said. Hughes noted that her observations have an
immediate benefit to the community. "I don’t just see grass anymore when I am out on the road, I see so much more detail. It might be dry at the top but still green at the bottom, and I know exactly where it is in the curing process no matter where I am." Dr Wright encouraged anyone interested to participate, highlighting the significant contribution to Victoria's understanding of the landscape and fire behaviour models. Maccas off the hook We’re serious about bringing Maccas back and this will ensure the population at Lake Dartmouth can flourish in years to come
NO CATCH… Macquarie perch, known as ‘Maccas’, are now protected in Victoria, with recreational fishers banned from taking the endangered species. The move aims to bolster wild populations, with significant government investment and a $3.7M partnership to crack the code on breeding Maccas in captivity. Photo: Codman
Travis Dowling I N a sig n ificant move towa rds t he preservation of local biodiversity, the Macquarie perch, affectionately known as 'Maccas', has been granted protected status in Victoria. The state's recreational fishers are now prohibited from taking the endangered species from the remaining two Victorian waterways, a decision aimed at bolstering the species' wild populations. Travis Dowling, CEO of Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA), expressed the state's commitment to ensure the Maccas' resurgence, especially in Lake Dartmouth, where the species has an active breeding population. “We're serious about bringing Maccas back and this will ensure the population at Lake Dartmouth can flourish in years to come," Dowling stated. This decision aligns with the significant
investment from the Victorian Government and various partner agencies to ensure a bright future for Maccas in Victoria. A three-year, $3.7M partnership launched in 2023 between the Federal and Victorian governments is working to unlock the secrets of successful Macquarie perch captive breeding. Further bolstering the recovery efforts, the Victorian Government's Go Fishing and Boating Victoria plan has funded a $15M development at the VFA’s Snobs Creek and Arcadia hatcheries. Since 2022, the Snobs Creek hatchery alone has produced over 185,000 Macquarie perch, which have been reintroduced into Victorian waters. "It’s all about returning these beautiful fish to their former glory in Victoria’s rivers and lakes," Dowling concluded.

A bitter pill AS inflation-induced price rises loom, the call for a decrease in medicine prices is being intensified by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia. From tomorrow, the maximum co-payment for PBS listed medicines will increase by $1.60 to $31.60 for general patients, and by 40 cents to $7.70 for concessional card holders. This situation contrasts sharply
with last year, when medicine prices fell by $12.50 following the Guild’s ‘Affordable Medicines Now’ campaign. "Instead of the Commonwealth Government putting the price of medicines up on the 1st of January, they should be doing in fact the complete opposite and easing the cost-of-living burden on

The Guild is now advocating for a reduction in the maximum co-payment for PBS medicines to $19, highlighting that Australia has the third highest out-ofpocket expenses for essential medicines in the developed world. Recent figures reveal that
many Australians are delaying or forgoing their essential medicines due to financial strain from rising living costs. Local writers’ book of poems to fill everyone’s glass By Aaron Cordy GOULBURN Valley Writers Group’s (GV WG) famed Elle Jaye Farren has fair welled the 2023 year with the launch of her seventh book, Lemon in a Glass, at GVWG’s Christmas break up. A work of poems that features Elle’s illustrations to complement her beautiful words. “Elle Jaye Farren views the world in a quaint, consistently spirited tone using the light and shade of wonder to shape the rhythm and form of her poems,” said former GVWG sectary Helene Castles. “There is a trace of whimsy in her words, shown in the illustrated character sketches that often accompany Elle’s writing.” The self-published author joined the GVWG in
October 2003, after attending the County Festival of Writing where she met Bev Crudden, who invited her to a GVWG meeting. Elle soon found her writing voice amongst a group of like-minded friends. CHARLTON'S journey to the top has been anything but easy. His 2023 season ended in New Zealand on Christmas Eve, and he immediately flew home to Melbourne. After a quick family Christmas and Boxing Day at home, he drove to Warrnambool to play an open money tournament before competing at the Goulburn Valley Open. Having played in tournaments all across the globe, when asked about his experience
playing in Shepparton, Charlton had nothing but praise for the local courts. "Shepparton always does a great job maintaining their courts. It's honestly a special place to play on the grass," he said. “The quality is good and the bounce is always consistent. That's just what you want in a good grass court,” “It’s crazy to me to think that a little over a year ago, where we’re standing now we’d be well and truly under the water. It’s unbelievable from the club to get the courts
into the condition they are today.” Despite the hectic schedule, Charlton is keen to see how high he can climb in the tennis rankings. In only six months of proper tour playing he’s already found himself ranked around 700 in doubles and 1400 in singles. “I’m just keen to really put in a full year on tour this year and just try to really accumulate some results. And just ultimately get the most out of myself,” he said.

Helpful hints to ease the transition back to school
BACK to school can fill any child with anxiety from the experienced campaigner to the little tykes setting off for their first day of foundation. Getting back into the school routine can seem daunting, which is why we’ve prepared these helpful tips to help get back in the zone: Re-establish a routine... Consistency is important for kids. Set a routine the whole family can participate in. This could include doing homework, brushing teeth, bath time, and reading before bed. But forget to leave time for those after-school activities that will be starting up soon. Early to bed, early to rise... A regular school sleep schedule does not happen overnight, and daylight savings can make this even more difficult. With only a few weeks until term one, start implementing an early night now by introducing gentle winding-down activities like reading before bed or bath time to relax your child and transition to earlier bedtimes. Limit screen time... Back to school is the opportune time to re-establish screen time limits that may have been breached over the holidays. Involve the whole family to unplug in the evenings by choosing a place where everyone charges their device overnight.
BACK TO SCHOOL... Lexi and Wyatt are looking forward to getting back to school to catch up with all their friends. Getting back into the school routine can seem daunting, which is why it helps to be prepared to get back into the zone. Photo: Aaron Cordy
Choose the right backpack... Select a backpack made from sturdy, lightweight material with wide, padded straps that will support your child’s shoulders. If too heavy or worn improperly, backpacks can cause headaches, muscle strain and neck pain. Organise school uniforms... Ensure your child’s school

Help little brains grow with nutritious school lunches
HEALTH LUNCHES... Although packing the kids’ lunches can be arduous, often calling upon culinary creativity at the end of the night or in the mad rush of the morning, it can be made simple and effective by mixing and matching snack options from each of the six healthy food groups. Photo: Aaron Cordy
WITH a return to school comes ravenous, hungry kids and although they may gulp down their lunches at lightning speed to hang out with their mates, a lunchbox jam-packed with healthy options will not only sustain their attention but will keep them fit and healthy. Although packing the kids’ lunches can be arduous, often calling upon culinary creativity at the end of the night or in the mad rush of the morning, it can be made simple and effective by mixing and matching snack options from each of the six healthy food groups. The six healthy food groups are:
• Fruit – could include fresh, frozen, pureed or canned in natural juice • Vegetables, legumes and beans • Milk, yoghurt, cheese and alternatives • Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds • Grain- cereal foods • Plain water. • By including something from each category in your child’s lunch box you can utilise whatever you have on hand, and you can also feel rest assured that your child is getting all the energy and nutrition they need.
To spruce up the fruit and vegetable portion of the lunchbox try fruit kebabs or fruit snack packs while adding hummus, tomato salsa or tzatziki to cut up cucumber, carrots or capsicum can ensure all the veggies get munched. Making mini homemade pizzas and fritters is another great idea for making tuna, chicken, salmon or any other meat more appetising while mixing up the breads, wraps and muffins can ensure grains are also covered. For a treat, surprise your child with some sushi or pasta salad, while last night's drumsticks or lamb cutlets make a delicious cold meat option for the next day.
Label it to prevent your child losing their stuff LABEL IT... Labelling your child’s school uniform is the most common-sense way to avoid these items becoming lost during the school term. Photo: Supplied
SCHOOL uniforms and supplies are expensive, and it can be frustrating when your child comes home from school without their hat or jumper, adding to the cost of education supplies. Labelling your child’s school uniform is the most common-sense way to avoid these items becoming lost during the school term. There are many ways to name uniform items that are both quick and easy. The simplest and most cost-effective is to use a fabric marker and write the name or initials
of the wearer on the care tag or an inside seam. Be sure to protect the outside fabric by placing some cardboard under the label area to catch any bleeding ink. With a marker, there’s a small chance it may bleed in the wash and leave a stain. For this reason, iron-on labels are well-regarded by parents, as they are inexpensive, convenient to use and generally last a lifetime of washing and wear. If the garment is handed down, a new
label can be ironed over the old one, giving this method an advantage over using markers. Using a family name over your child’s first name can stop any potential future arguments if younger siblings inherit their school uniform. Please note that some children may find iron-on and sew-on labels itchy to wear. Chat with staff at your local uniform shop for more advice and the most suitable labelling option for your family.

Ease the stress of back to school NERVOUS TIMES... It is completely normal to feel nervous about starting school for the first time or going back to school after the holidays. If your child is feeling anxious, reassure them that is it normal to feel this way. Photo: Supplied
IT IS completely normal to feel nervous about starting school for the first time or going back to school after the holidays. If your child is feeling anxious, reassure them that is it normal to feel this way. Here are some tips for helping your child cope with first-week nerves: Let them express their fears. You may have stories of your first-day jitters when you were a child that they can relate to and learn from. Teach them mindfulness techniques like
breathing slowly and deeply to calm their nerves. Discuss scenarios that worry them. For example, your child may be worried about who to sit with or talk to on their first day. Help them to plan strategies and rehearse together so they’ll feel confident they know what to do. The Child Mind Institute also suggests parents check in with themselves too. Kids know when you’re nervous and preparing young ones for the semester can be as stressful for
parents as it is for students. By managing your stress, you’re demonstrating to your children how to be calm. “Often, kids just need a little validation (“I know how hard it is to get to know a new teacher”) to feel better,” writes Caroline Miller for the Child Mind Institute. Scrapbook the year to keep treasured memories CRAFT MEMORIES... Scrapbooking allows you to create a special keepsake that you and your family can cherish for years to come. King of the road with Gold By Deanne Jeffers SHEPPARTON Cycling Club stalwart Myles Higgins, who competes in the 74-79 age group, recently placed first at the Federation University Road National Championships in Mount Helen, Victoria. Myles is a Vietnam veteran who became involved in the world of road bike racing at age 45 through The Australian Veteran Cycling Council (AVCC). From there he became familiar with mountain biking, becoming the Australian National Champion in downhill mountain biking at Thredbo in 1992.
IN a bid to raise dementia awareness, well over 100 people joined Mick Simpson on Mick’s Memory Walk around Victoria Lake Park on Sunday. “What a great turnout we had on Sunday. It was wonderful to see people out there, walking in the name of awareness of this somewhat invisible condition. It can be an incredibly isolating diagnosis to face, but with social support, and the right community, it doesn’t have to be a path people forge on their own,” said Mick.
d e l l e c Can Funds for 2026 Commonwealth Games to be redirected THE Victorian State Government, led by Premier Daniel Andrews, has announced the Commonwealth Games which were scheduled to be held in Victoria, in 2026, will be cancelled. Initially estimated to cost $2.6B, the projected cost had escalated to at least $6B- $7B. Premier Andrews expressed his unwillingness to allocate such a substantial amount of money to a 12-day sporting event.
Rejoice, Welsford Street is back open! THE redeveloped intersection at Welsford Street and Fryers Street will re-open Friday with the new road expected to improve traffic flow and provide a safer environment for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. There are changes to the way Marungi Street and Fryers Street operate, with vehicles able to do left hand turns only to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion. Right hand turns from Fryers Street into Marungi Street or vice versa are no longer possible.

With fun and excitement, loaded with questions about guns and donuts, the children enjoyed learning about a side of the police force not often experienced by outsiders.
IT’S A far cry from the cauldron of the MCG to Mooroopna Primary School, but it’s in the imaginations of many children across the country where dreams of playing in the AFL first begin. It was no different for North Melbourne co-captain, and Mooroopna Primary School graduate, Jy Simpkin.
The excited troop met out the front of the station with their troop’s leader and a couple of parent helpers, before the 20 eager scouts were shown through the daily operation of the front desk, spent time in the cells, learned the art of detective work, all before they were dusted for prints. They ended the night in the back of the divvy van, with the flashing lights keeping the kids entertained.
Jy, along with former AFL Brownlow medallist Shane Crawford, and Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, were on hand last week to teach the children of Mooroopna Primary School some valuable lessons about goal setting and chasing your dream.
Scouting out the Shepparton police By Aaron Cordy Kialla’s 1st Scouts Cubs pawed their way to the Shepparton Police Station for an interactive tour with Youth Resource Officer, Senior Constable Mitchell Bull last Thursday night.

WALKING through the streets of Shepparton, it’s common to see the cities walls decorated with delightful designs created by talented street artists. One such artist is local woman Sophie Wilson, also known as Sophletta. While backpacking through Brazil in 2015, Sophie was inspired by the vibrant street art scene and decided to give art a try for the first time. It was there she met fellow street artist- and now husband- Davidson Lopes who invited Sophie to create her very first mural at a local school.

Shepparton: ground zero for world's largest impact crater By Dillon Shelley RESIDENTS of the Goulburn Valley have always taken pride in its rich agricultural history and now, locals have an extra reason to boast - we’re smack in the middle of what researchers believe to be Earth’s largest known asteroid impact structure!

THE walk for compassion, empathy and understanding was held last Saturday at Victoria Park Lake. Neffy’s Walk Let’s Talk, is a suicide prevention awareness walk organised by the members of Neffy’s We Listen, the Shepparton/ Mooroopna-based group created to make a safe space for locals who are suffering from suicidal ideation or need support after a loved one has taken their own life.
Less water = rural communities potentially decimated WHILE the Greater Shepparton community rallied behind Mayor Cr Shane Sali to stop the water buybacks going ahead last week, the Federal Labor Government struck a deal with the Greens party that no one in the Murray Darling communities wanted.
Steven Neff founded Neffy’s Walk Let’s Talk and Neffy’s We Listen to reach out and help people in the wake of his own loss to suicide.
Despite calls from groups like the National Farmers Federation (NFF) to stop the water buybacks, Independent senators, Lidia Thorpe, Victoria, David Pocock, ACT and David Van, Victoria along with the Greens Party gave the Albanese Government the votes to pass the Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023.

Rising above the heat
SERVING UP A CHALLENGE... Hometown hero, Hope Curtis-McDonald fought hard but ultimately fell short in the quarter final of the Goulburn Valley Open. Photo: Dillon Shelley

Adviser Jaimin Mandi’s impressive run at the Goulburn Valley Open By Dillon Shelley MAKING waves in the local tennis scene is seventeen-year-old Melbourne native, Jaimin Mandi. Despite her young age, Jaimin has already been competing in the open women's division for 3-4 years, including a strong showing at the recent Goulburn Valley Open where she was runner-up. "2023 was my best season yet with lots of singles finals and doubles wins," Jaimin commented, reflecting on her success. She has high hopes for 2024, aiming to compete in more prominent tournaments while juggling her final year of school.
A fan of grass and hard courts, Jaimin draws inspiration from tennis idols Taylor Fritz, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Nick Kyrgios, and Roger Federer. Jaimin’s performance at the Goulburn Valley Open was particularly noteworthy, given she had less than ideal preparation leading into it. "The tournament was pretty good, but the heat was really hard," she said. Despite the challenges, Jaimin managed to defeat hometown hero, Hope CurtisMcDona ld , i n t he qu a r ter-f i na l , a testament to her skill and determination, much to the chagrin of local supporters.
TEEN TENNIS TRIUMPH… Young Melbourne talent, Jaimin Mandi, shines in the tennis world, impressing at the recent Goulburn Valley Open. Despite challenges, she aims for more success in 2024 while balancing her final year of school. Photo: Dillon Shelley
