Sail away with me

By Aaron Cordy SKIM the waves of the beautiful Victoria Park Lake with some fantastic company and share the experience of sailing with people of all abilities with Shepparton Sailability. The wonderful not-for-profit is desperately seeking volunteers before they hit the water in February. Sailing experience is an advantage but not required. They are happy to train volunteers, and there is work to be done on the shore as well and they have the equipment to make it as easy as possible for both participants and volunteers. Sessions run Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8.30am to 3pm during terms one and four of the school year. Shepparton Sailability was established in 2012 and is

Retired Wanganui Park teacher Adrian Sumner has been sailing since his teenage years and decided make use of his skills and give back to the community with this brilliant program.

“It’s all about giving members of the community a positive experience on the water, sailing, something many would never have done, or never had the opportunity to do. That’s what it’s all about,” said Adrian. To get involved call Roy Hill on 0438 570 549, or email shepsailing@gmail.com or sailabilitybookings@gmail.com.

AMIDST Victoria’s surge in road fatalities, the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre has been designated one of 15 premium ‘Pause Stop’ locations by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC). Situated within a two-hour drive from Melbourne's north and key Northeast Victoria destinations, the centre offers essential respite for travellers. Boasting amenities like on-site cafes, toilets, a Changing Places facility, a children's playground, and indoor/outdoor lounges, the Visitor Centre is well-equipped for a ‘Pause Stop’ experience. Staff and volunteers, trained in TAC's messaging, will assist in effective stopovers and future travel planning. With Victoria hitting its highest road toll in 15 years, TAC and VTIC have established ‘Pause Stop’ locations to promote safe driving practices.

The Centre will serve as a crucial resource hub, offering information on combating drowsy driving, engaging kids during stops, and aiding in journey planning. As 2023 saw 296 road fatalities in Victoria, a significant increase from 2022, the ‘Pause Stop’ campaign urges all travellers, particularly those on extended regional journeys, to prioritise safety. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Shane Sali, emphasised the importance of safety during summer holidays, encouraging travellers to utilise ‘Pause Stop’ locations for a refreshing break. TAC's head of road safety, Samantha Cockfield, underscored the need for planning, sufficient rest, adapting to road conditions, minimising distractions, and taking regular breaks. “With more people travelling at this time of year, often with friends or family, and for longer periods, on unfamiliar roads, we are urging people

Listen from deep on the sidelines By Aaron Cordy TOXIC overbearing parents disgracing themselves at suburban grounds, or the call of the wild inhabitants of nature, whatever tickles your interest and has you reaching for that next great read, Goulburn Valley Libraries continue their fantastic author talks with two more brilliant writers slated for February. Andrew Skeoch will bring ‘Deep Listening to Nature,’ to Tatura Library, Thursday February 8, at 12.30pm. Inland drownings hit 10-year high V ICTOR I A NS are urged to take care near inland waterways due to a rise in fatal and non-fatal drownings in the state. Life Saving Victoria's 2022-23 drowning report reveals a 14 per cent increase in fatal drownings and a 13 per cent increase in non-fatal incidents at inland waterways compared to the 10-year average. Approximately two-thirds of these incidents involve alcohol or drugs. Even in holiday hotspots like Murray River towns, where populations surge in summer, locals are not immune to risks. Dr Hannah Calverley, LSV's research manager, highlights that inland waterways in Victoria witness just as many, if not more, fatal drownings than

coastal areas. Alarmingly, over a third of these incidents occur within the victim's residential postcode. Inland waterways, such as rivers and lakes, pose unique drowning risks. Ambulance Victoria's Justin Dunlop emphasised the importance of recognising these hazards. Incidents often result from unexpected slips and falls, making them more perilous as victims are unprepared and may suffer significant injuries. To report emergencies, call Triple Zero (000). In remote areas, the 'Emergency Plus' app, using GPS, provides precise location details to Triple Zero. Open the app to share location coordinates and three descriptive words to accurately pinpoint your location.

Staying safe around inland waterways this summer: • Read the signs around waterways to familiarise yourself with the dangers, which differ at each body of water and even at different sections of the same river or lake. • Learn how to swim and know your limits. • Never swim alone and let people know where you’re going. • Be alert around waterways, whether you’re planning to enter the water or not, this includes actively and constantly supervising children. • Whether in a boat, taking part in water sports or swimming, people should also wear a correctly fitted lifejacket.

Foresters Hall turns 150 years young in style By Aaron Cordy THE pages of time were turned back on Saturday when the Shepparton Heritage Museum celebrated 150 years of Foresters Hall. On November 24, 1873, Mr William Fraser agreed to construct a Hall on his land and lease it to Mr James Hay for 5 years with an annual rent of £300. Honoured guests Andrew Furphy and Shepparton Heritage Centre (SHC) life member Peter Ford were guest speakers. Mayor Shane Sali cut the ribbon to open the centre’s exhibition. With a Greater Shepparton City Councillors in attendance, State Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe presented a congratulatory plaque to the SHC president Geoff Maynard and life member Peter Ford, honouring

their contributions to preserving the building’s past. T he h a l l h a s b e e n a sig n i f ic a nt pa r t of Shepparton's history, filling many roles and passing through ownership many times when in 1967, Shepparton City Council purchased the Hall and the adjoining land. That didn’t end the transformation of the hall, but it did begin its journey to the museum as it stands today. While the 150-year celebration is over, SHC has been busy working on Shepparton's Progressive History Exhibition, which will run until the end of May 2024. To step back in time and see the wonders of past life in Shepparton, visit Shepparton Heritage Museum on 152 Welsford Street, Tuesdays to Saturdays, between 10.30am and 4pm.

Together in tradition “IT is so disappointing they have taken this stance. We always have in excess of 200 people attend our Australia Day celebrations, and we have heavily relied on Greater Shepparton City Council for funding, but not this year.” This year, council-backed citizenship and awards ceremonies will be held on alternate dates, and Community Celebration Grants will replace The Australia Day Small Town Grants Program, to fund alternate celebrations held around January 26. “Tatura and Murchison will run their own Australia Day events on January 26. These events are not funded by Council. In previous years Council has supported small towns within Greater Shepparton to run Australia Day events on January 26, and has hosted an Australia Day event in Shepparton,” said a Council spokesperson. GSSC resolved to lobby the Government to change the date in 2022, and to continue community engagement to clarify the council’s role on January 26. Council consulted the community through a public survey in 2023, and results suggested strong support for changing how council acknowledged the date, particularly among younger residents, while there was also support shown for Australia Day to be still marked on January 26. This culminated at the September council meeting, with eight of nine council members voting in support of ceasing celebrations on Australia Day, with Cr Fern Summer abstaining from voting due to the 2023 Voice referendum being weeks away and not wanting to influence local voters, but expressing “strong support,” for the motion. Mr Schubert said, “Our Committee has been in existence since 1975. Australia Day is considered sensitive by some as it marks the arrival of British settlers in 1788, which led to the displacement and mistreatment of many Indigenous Australians. Short-sighted solutions: nocost trial for kids ENSURE your child’s readiness for school by prioritising their vision. Approximately 80 per cent of a child’s learning experience is visual, making healthy vision crucial for educational, physical, and social development. Shockingly, 1 in 5 children navigates through school with undetected vision issues, silently hindering their progress. Myopia, or shor t-sightedness, is a common problem, especially as its onset occurs at increasingly younger ages. The rapid progression of myopia in children poses a risk of eye diseases in adulthood. Detection is vital, as children may not express what they believe to be normal vision issues. Look out for signs like complaints of blurry vision, headaches, or sore eyes, delays in reading progress, turned eyes, redness, frequent blinking, or rubbing.

Regarded as one of Shepparton’s largest independent optometrists, Graham Hill Eyecare, emphasises children’s vision and myopia management. They recommend a comprehensive eye examination to catch any potential issues before school commences. She said, “It is very important to find and treat short sightedness as early as possible. There are several factors that can increase the rate of short-sightedness development. These include the amount of time spent focusing on up close objects or devices, the amount of family members who also developed short sightedness in childhood and the amount of time spent outdoors.” “Also, having untreated short sightedness

Supermarket pricing no longer ignored by the government SUPERMARKET PRICING... When Ross Marsolino called out supermarkets on the prices as he couldn’t pay his workers due to the rate he was being paid compared to prices Coles and Woolworths sold his zucchinis for, he wanted action taken. He got just that when the Albanese Government announced a Select Committee on Supermarket Pricing be established to inquire into and report on the price-setting practices and market power of major supermarkets. Photo: Aaron Cordy

continued from front page NEP’s social media campaign, headed by owner Ross Marsolino, went viral and he was soon joined by other farmers around the country. Moving from ‘Social Media’ to national radio and channel Seven Sunrise breakfast program, the issue could no longer be ignored. On December 6, 2023, the Senate resolved a Select Committee on Supermarket Pricing be established to inquire into and report on the price-setting practices and market power of major supermarkets, chaired by Greens Senator Nick McKim. “Investigating supermarket prices is vital as Coles and

Woolworths have been profiting from price gouging during a costof-living crisis, impacting many Australians. We're taking on the corporate supermarket giants to cut the cost of food for everyone and dismantle their market power,” said Senator McKim. The Committee is taking submissions from the public until Friday, February 2, 2024. “We’ve also heard from farmers and suppliers, as well as current and former employees of the supermarket giants. Collectively they paint a picture of two corporations that have badly misused their power and need to be held to account,” said Senator McKim. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

(ACCC) has weighed in on the issue, with talk of legal action against Coles and Woolworths, on the back of the Albanese Government announcement. This comes after four fruit and vegetable traders, Green Endeavour, Bache Bros, Nutrano and GetFresh, were forced to pay penalties related to pricing last year. It is middlemen wholesalers who many on both sides of the industry blame for the increase in prices. The Senate Select Committee on Supermarket Prices’ report is due out in May, though it is already too late for some farmers and families feeling the pinch of every dollar squeezed out of them by the government and big business.

Waterway update Water delivered into the Goulburn River is helping provide vital refuge for native fish impacted by the flood-affected flow. Small volumes of water are being delivered at numerous sites along the Goulburn, between Arcadia and McCoys Bridge, so fish including Murray Cod and Golden Perch can move to the higher quality water, if dissolved oxygen levels drop too low. Dissolved oxygen is the oxygen in the water available to fish and other aquatic species. If dissolved oxygen levels fall too low, fish can become stressed and possibly die. Native fish and crayfish are especially vulnerable to low levels of dissolved oxygen.

This water is being delivered via irrigation channels that transfer water from the Goulburn River further upstream, after it’s released from Lake Eildon. The deliveries are in collaboration with GoulburnMurray Water and the Victorian Environmental Water Holder. Letters to the Editor

We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain. SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL DAY

Dear Editor, A SURVEY published within the last two weeks showed that 63 per cent of people support Australia Day on January 26th. I believe that Council should reinstate holding citizenship ceremonies on January 26th because that's where they belong. We have a lot to be proud of in Australia and should be teaching this to our youth. Council's remit is rates, roads and rubbish, not politics. We live in a democracy, and as such, should be consulted about important issues like Australia Day before any changes are made. I want to live in a cohesive society where everyone is equal. I wish everyone a very happy Australia Day. Kind regards, Jenny Carter Shepparton

AUSTRALIA DAY COMMITTEE CARRYS ON WITHOUT COUNCIL

Dear Editor, The Tatura Australia Day Committee have operated since 1975. We are proud of the celebrations we have been instrumental in organising for nearly the last 50 years. In more recent times we have seen attendances well above 200 people as they enjoy the day each year, and we are constantly receiving warm congratulations and thanks from attendees, with some of them travelling from Melbourne. Greater Shepparton City Council (GGSC) have supported our Australia Day celebrations for over 25 years. However, when we commenced planning for the 2024, we were advised that there was a possibility we would not receive a grant if we held our celebration on the 26th. This advice was confirmed when we visited the GSSC website and reviewed the 2024 Small Town Community Celebration Grants. The document stated: “Greater Shepparton City Council recognises that Australia Day, held on 26 January, remains Australia’s national day, however it is not a day of celebration for all particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. In recognition of this, Council resolved to replace the Australia Day Small Town Grants Program with a Small Town Community

Celebrations Grants Program that provides funding for the Greater Shepparton community to hold their own celebrations on 23-25 January, or 27-29 January”. We are an Australia Day Committee of 12 members and because of our history and longevity, we are an excellent cross section of the Tatura and surrounding communities. We surveyed many of the local service (and other) clubs, businesses, and much of the population within Tatura, and there was an overwhelming opinion that regardless of council’s decision, we must hold our event on the actual Australia Day – January 26th. We did consider other options including changing the day of celebration however given the “mood” of the residents, the Australia Day Committee voted unanimously to hold the celebration on the 26th January 2024. Also, the Murchison Australia Day Committee initially planned their celebrations on an alternative day, and they received funding. Many residents approached the Committee, to the extent a survey was conducted in Murchison and given the feedback, it was determined that they alter their celebration back to the 26th. This decision resulted in the Murchison Australia Day Committee having to return the funding back to GSSC. Our decision to hold celebrations on the 26th has resulted in GSSC for the first time in over 20 years, rejecting the Tatura Australia Day (and Murchison) application to fund celebrations purely because we are holding them on the actual Australia Day. This is despite completing the Funding Application exactly the same as previous years, yet it was rejected. The wording in the letter we received from Council stated: “Your application for funding was considered along with other applications for this program and I regret to inform you that on this occasion you were unsuccessful, due to the application not meeting the grant program guidelines.” The only guidelines we did not meet was our event was to be held on the 26th of January. It is so disappointing that they have taken this stance. We have always had over 200 people attend our celebrations and we have heavily relied on GSSC for funding, but not this year. Whoever is responsible for this decision it is disappointing and bordering on shameful and we as a Committee will work hard

to fund our celebration and we will not be bullied by anyone at GSSC. What a terrible decision GSSC has made. It is interesting to note the Council offices are closed on January 26th, 2024, because of the holiday I was advised. This in my opinion reeks of a double standard by Council. They recognise the holiday on the 26th January but not the celebration. One councillor was noted as stating, “the recommendation acknowledged the individual feelings the community has surrounding the date.” He is certainly not speaking to residents in Tatura and/or Murchison! I attended meetings where the date was discussed and as the issue became too “sensitive” and “divisive” for the community, and the meetings were ceased. However, Council still voted to not support the day. There is no doubt the Australia Day debate has come back into discussion due to the Voice to Parliament referendum. Yet I am concerned about Council’s decision as this electorate was the second highest in Australia to vote NO to the referendum. Are our councillors really taking into consideration the thoughts and wishes of the people they represent or are they becoming “woke” like other councils? Their decision in rejecting our application for funding is not in the best interests of ratepayers and in my opinion is bordering bully tactics to ensure we capitulate to Council’s wants and wishes. There is a lot of dissatisfied residents over the western side and rate payers throughout the Council due to your actions of not “sticking to your own lane”. When are our councillors going to focus on Rates, Roads, Rubbish and focus on the needs of the ratepayers. They have in my opinion lost their way and are pathetic at reading what the ratepayers needs and wants are. We need to think long and hard about who we elect at the next Council elections and get rid of the “woke” councillors. For those in Council who rejected our application hang your head in shame as you have acted in a disgraceful manner and what you have done is bordering on being un-Australian. Rod Schubert President of Tatura Australia Day Committee

2024 kick off: GVL football and netball return MARK your calendars for April 6 as the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League football and netball storm back into action. GVL board chair Jacqui Hudgson said she is thrilled to see some night games scheduled in the early part of the season and the return of Interleague action. “After a successful season in 2023, we are eagerly looking forward to the return of football and netball in 2024,” she said. This is another great opportunity for players to represent their League,” said Hudgson. Senior football coaches have been appointed for 2024.
