As part of Victoria’s Big Build, we’ve upgraded the Shepparton Line with modern VLocity trains now running. We’re also working to enable more frequent and reliable train services, creating better connections across our state.
With VLocity trains operating on the Shepparton Line and 10 extra services per week travelling between Melbourne and Shepparton, we’re working to complete the next stage of the upgrade.
Station upgrades at Mooroopna, Murchison East and Nagambie are complete, enabling longer VLocity trains to operate on the line.

Grab yourself a cup of the Goulburn Valley
By Deanne Jeffers
THE ARTISTIC perspectives of towns throughout Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley have been preserved in an exhibition, showcasing local scenes, recognisable buildings and colours, flora and fauna and history, from local artists.
The exhibition is the culmination of the ‘A Cup of Shepp and GV’ art contest. Open to all ages, the competition was held across four weeks last year and sought to highlight hidden talents in the community, with the opportunity for residents to develop creative artwork representing Shepparton, Mooroopna, Tatura, Dookie and Murchison. The contest winners are:
• Anni Jane Linklater – Mooroopna
• Karren Pollerd – Tatura
• Katelyn Trevaskis – Murchison
• Stephanie Taylor – Dookie
• Kat Parker – Shepparton
• Monica Burney – Winner of the ‘People’s Choice’ award, representing Shepparton.
For Murchison winner, Katelyn Trevaskis, who is studying Year 11, depicting the Murchison meteorite trailing the sky over familiar shopfronts was a no-brainer and an opportunity to combine her artistic passions with her passion for space.
"It's really exciting to be in the exhibition, I can't believe it," Katelyn said. “I’m a Murchison local and I’ve always loved art and space, so it felt like a natural choice to depict this event and familiar shops in the town."
From February to June 2024, the winning artwork from the ‘A Cup of Shepp and GV’ art contest will be on display at the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre at 530 Wyndham Street, Shepparton.
In addition to being exhibited at the Visitor Centre, the designs have been reproduced onto ceramic coffee cups and mugs, giving visitors and locals the chance to take home a creative piece of our small towns.

Building Resilience to help the communities recovery
continued from front page
RIR is funded by the State and Australian Governments and works in conjunction with Council, built on a national best practice disaster recovery framework and headed by Carla Dixon.
“Everything we do is intended to empower people and create stronger and more connected communities. We are grounded in principles of empowerment - human rights, inclusion, social justice, self-determination and collective actions,” said Carla.
“We believe communication plays a vital role in ensuring communities are empowered. Participatory approaches in communication that encourage discussion and debate result in increased knowledge and awareness, and a
higher level of critical thinking.”
Since the program was established last April, RIR has run many activities aimed at bringing people out of uncertainty and despair and back connected to their community. RIR has also turned its focus on drop-in sessions being held at Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres around the region until the end of June. Where people can seek guidance and advice or just share their experience of the October 2022 flood event.

Defending Local Business Against V/Line’s Corporate Shift
In Parliament last week, I called on the Minister for Public and Active Transport, Gabrielle Williams, to retract V/Line’s decision to transition the operation of vending machines at the Shepparton Railway Station to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, significantly impacting a local business owner, Greg Coghlan, who owns Goulburn Valley Vending Services.
Sustainable Funding for Neighbourhood Houses
The government must commit to sustainable funding for Neighbourhood Houses, ensuring they can continue their vital work. Neighbourhood Houses are crucial in providing support and services to the Shepparton District community, especially in challenging times. However, these organisations face the threat of underfunding despite their undoubted value.
Asking the Big questions on mental health
By Aaron Cordy BATTLING
mental health issues are hard enough to face when hardship sets in, but where do you go for help, who can provide the right care you need to help and support you, so you’re not left alone?
The Big Ask Mental Health Forum, a free event to help people in the region find the best local services that are available and break the stigma around mental health, will be held on Sunday, March 3, at the Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
Hosted by GV Finance Brokers in what they hope will become an annual free event, The Big Ask Mental Health Forum will have speakers from several organisations and guest speaker Ray ‘Razor Ray’ Chamberlain, AFL umpire and Founder of the Chamberlain Foundation, a suicide prevention and mental health charity. Attendees will receive a free 20-page guide, covering support services available in the Goulburn Valley.
Through his experience at GV Finance Brokers, Simon Quattrocchi has seen the strain placed on people and families financially that can impact every aspect of their lives and knew he had to do something about it.
“Knowing where to start when it comes to sourcing mental health support in our region can be challenging, so we set out to create an event that connects people with services. The Big Ask is just that, an open forum for people to learn and discover what services are available, and which ones are right for them. With a growing need for services within the community, it’s time to break the stigma. We are incredibly grateful for the collaboration with the Chamberlain Foundation, Headspace,

$2.5M plea to save community hubs
continued from front page
IN OVER 400 Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria, dedicated staff and volunteers tirelessly provide vital services, particularly in regional areas. Despite facing floods, pandemics and soaring living costs, centres like Mooroopna Education & Activity Centre (MEAC) have persisted in meeting community needs. However, insufficient funding has failed to keep pace with inflation, clouding their future.
MEAC manager, Jan Phillips, shared, “In the last 10 years our funding has dropped by around 20 per cent, while demand has surged, leading to about 80 per cent more work. Neighbourhood Houses address a wide range of complex needs, including food security where demand has surged. Despite our efforts, essential areas lack adequate funding support.
“With 80 per cent of our funding allocated
to wages and barely covering our expenses, sustaining our operations becomes increasingly challenging.”
Neighbourhood House Victoria (NHV) highlighted the staggering costs associated with food relief, estimating $1.37M for food alone, excluding other expenses like labour and utilities. Additionally, wages amount to approximately $3.5M across the sector to sustain food relief efforts.
Despite funding from the Department of Families, Fairness, and Housing, known as the Neighbourhood Houses Coordination Program (NHCP), rapidly growing demand has strained resources, with NHCP facing over a decade of indexation well below the actual costs incurred. Further, there's no provision for supporting new Houses, despite Victoria's expanding population.
NHV is appealing for an additional $2.5M in funding, to be distributed across the Network in the 2024-25 state budget,
with a proposal for a growth fund to establish five new Houses annually over four years to meet escalating demand.
State Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, raised the issue in Parliament last week, asking the Minister for Carers and Volunteers, Ros Spence, to commit to a growth fund and additional funding.
Referring to a 2022 Deloitte study, Jan underscored the remarkable value output of Neighbourhood Houses, where every $1 investment yields $5-$10 return. During the hard lockdown, Jan said MEAC delivered
Pillars of health in the community
GV Health launches three-year strategic plan
By Aaron Cordy
GV HEALTH launched a three-year plan to continue growth and maintain excellent healthcare in the region. The GV Health Strategic Plan 2024-2026 will be held up by five pillars that will cross all aspects of health in the region, engage members of the community and help retain staff which has been a struggle in all regional centres in recent years across many sectors including healthcare.
The five strategic pillars:
• Health and wellbeing outcomes: to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for people in our region.
• Community and consumer experience: to ensure all community members have an outstanding personalised experience at GV Health.
• Staff experience: to ensure GV Health staff feel connected, supported, safe and well.
• Responsible workplace: to ensure GV Health continues to improve in sustainability and efficiency.
• Health equity: to embrace differences in how GV Health designs and delivers healthcare.
Understanding the diversity of the region, including the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in regional Victoria, has been pivotal in tailoring care to meet cultural needs.
In the wake of the COVID pandemic, the recent floods and the current cost of living crisis, the strain on healthcare has been more prevalent than ever before, especially in the mental health space. That comes back to the people providing the care, giving them the support they need to provide the best outcome for locals.
“It’s no accident our workforce is at the centre of our new plan – they are the people providing vital care and support in our community’s times of greatest need. This plan recognises that by supporting our staff in their pursuit of excellence, we can overcome the challenges and embrace the opportunities so that everyone can have the best possible experience in our
an astounding $16 return for every $1 invested. Through the more recent $250 Power Saving Bonus, they put $750,000 back into local peoples’ pockets and were able to employ an additional staff member.
“No matter how you look at it, the Government is getting five times its investment from Neighbourhood Houses,” said Jan. “Community houses are so important to towns here and everywhere, but without funding they won’t be able to continue.”

A Coke problem for local business
IN A strong move, Shepparton District's Nationals Member, Kim O'Keeffe, has taken to Parliament to challenge V/Line's recent vending machine agreement with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. O'Keeffe is urging Public and Active Transport Minister, Gabrielle Williams, to reconsider the decision, which threatens to disrupt a local business that has been a community staple for more than 20 years.
The business in question, Goulburn Valley Vending Service, owned by Greg Coghlan, has been servicing snack and beverage machines at two regional V/ Line sites, including the Shepparton Railway Station. The new agreement gives Coghlan a mere 30-day notice to vacate, effectively ending his operations.
“Greg and his team have been a part of our local economy, providing a reliable service for 25 years and employing local staff,” O'Keeffe stated. She highlighted the decision's adverse impact on small businesses and called it, “a classic example of the Allan Labor Government neglecting Victorian small local businesses.”
O'Keeffe underscored the importance of small businesses, calling them the “backbone of communities,” and criticised the abrupt transition and lack of support for affected local businesses. She concluded by asking Minister Williams to retract the “appalling decision.”
Experience Albania in Shepparton
A VIBRANT celebration of Albanian culture is set to hit town again with the 25th annual Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival, on Sunday, March 3 at Queens Gardens. Building on the success of the 2023 festival, this year's event is expected to be the largest yet. The festival, one of the largest community-run events in Shepparton, offers a unique showcase of Albanian traditions, music, and cuisine.
From 11am to 5pm, festival-goers will be treated to traditional Albanian music and dance performances, a variety of Albanian food for purchase, and a kids' zone for family fun. The festival also features a fruit and vegetable
market, offering locally grown produce from the Goulburn Valley at wholesale prices. This has attracted many attendees from Melbourne in past years.
Shepparton Albanian Society President, Reg Qemal, encourages a diverse crowd to join the festivities. “Our committee would very much like to encourage a more diverse crowd to come along and help us celebrate our culture by sharing our entertainment, food and traditions,” he said.
The festival offers free entry with a suggested gold coin donation. For more information, visit http://sheppartonalbaniansociety.org/

FROM DAIRY FARMER TO PARLIAMENTARIAN, a journey inspirationof
A message from Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell MP, State Member for Northern Victoria
I FEEL privileged to be a part of The Adviser’s Inspirational Women of the Goulburn Valley. As I reflect on my first year in the Victorian Parliament as the Member for Northern Victoria Region, I am proud that a dairy farmer from Invergordon can be elected by her constituents to represent them in state politics.
The road to become an elected member of State Parliament has been a long one with many ups and downs. Like everyone, I have faced adversity and setbacks along the way and have been
lucky to have always had the support of my husband and two children.
As is the case with all working mothers, I juggle my busy working life with the demands of my family. It is not easy, and I acknowledge the sacrifices that all working mums make as they juggle their careers with their responsibilities at home.
Women make up exactly 50 per cent of the Victorian Parliament and I am proud to be a part of such a genderdiverse workplace. I believe each and every woman is inspirational in their own right and I am humbled to be the voice of not just women but everyone within the Northern Victoria Region.
“Women make up exactly 50 per cent of the Victorian Parliament and I am proud to be a part of such a genderdiverse workplace.”
In my role I am lucky to meet many inspirational women across a range of industries and professions and it is wonderful to see the many great things being achieved.

Breaking BOLTS AND BIASES
IN THE grease-stained, traditionally male-dominated world of mechanical and equipment sales, Ultimate Fasteners is breaking stereotypes with its diverse workforce, showing that gender has no bearing on success.
Kaylene McCormick has worked at Ultimate Fasteners the longest, providing administrative and accounting support for seven years. For Kaylene, navigating male-dominated spaces is second nature. With over 21 years of experience, spanning irrigation and banking, she's seen it all.
Sophie Dervish, who often works behind the counter, echoes Kaylene's sentiments. With a background in sales and administration, she effortlessly earns respect from clients, proving her capabilities one interaction at a time.
“Some clients still request a male representative, but I quickly show them what I’m capable of. It’s about earning respect, one satisfied customer at a time”
Sophie Dervish
“When I worked in banking, it was very femaleoriented,” she said. “Humour is key. You have to learn to roll with the punches, especially when dealing with some men who have set ways."
“Some clients still request a male representative," she shared, "But I quickly show them what I'm capable of. It's about earning respect, one satisfied customer at a time."
Carole Moore, with over 26 years in engineering and five looking after accounts payable and receivable at Ultimate Fasteners, has seen workplace dynamics shift during her working life.
While acknowledging there have been challenges for women, particularly in male-oriented workplaces, she feels optimistic about progress and her career.

roles because men thought they’d be ‘too distracting’ in the workplace, fortunately that mentality has shifted,” Carole said. These are not just individual stories, they paint a broader picture of an industry in flux. While the customer base at Ultimate Fasteners leans towards men, Sophie points
out that a growing number of female buyers are entering the space. This shift, coupled with the experiences and voices of women like Sophie, Kaylene and Carole at Ultimate Fasteners underscores the crucial role women play in the industry's success.

REPRESENT A REGION OF inspirational women
A message from Kim O’Keeffe MP, State Member for Shepparton District OVER the years, I have been encouraged, inspired, and supported by many wonderful women, not only in our community but also from afar.
The power of encouragement, acknowledgment, and support speaks volumes.
I am often humbled by the kindness and encouragement I receive, sometimes from women I don't even know, whether through social media or other ways of connection.
But it is the women closest to me who are always there for me – my two daughters, sisters, nieces, and girlfriends, all of whom I turn to and lean on. I could not imagine my journey so far without their support.
In my former business life, where I had a salon and training school, which I ran for almost 28 years, it was mostly women who supported my business. When I had my business, I experienced firsthand the difference you could make and the impact and influence you could have on the future of those around you, whether through a conversation, a connection, advice, or guidance. Many visited my salon or participated in various professional training programs over the years, which often led to varied opportunities, personal growth, and success.
Being part of the successful journeys of other women has given me great joy.
I hope my journey so far inspires others to achieve the things in life they aspire to. Our journeys are different, as are what we want to achieve in life. My greatest wish is to encourage other women to look at the opportunities and possibilities of whatever it is that they aspire to or hope to achieve.
From a small, long-term business owner, followed by six years in Local Government, including almost four years as Mayor, and now in my current role as the State Member of Parliament for the Shepparton District, it has been a transition of change, opportunity, and personal growth. It has also been challenging and, at times, scary to take that leap of faith out of my comfort zone.
Looking back on my journey, I never dreamed that I would end up in politics, but my experiences, the want to serve the community, and the belief in me from other inspiring women have led me here. The community is also here with me on this journey. They elected
me to represent them, and I take that with the highest of gratitude, respect, and responsibility.
When I walk up the stairs of Parliament House, I walk through those doors representing the people of my electorate. I feel incredibly proud to represent the region and have such a strong sense of responsibility that I will never take for granted. As a leader in the community, I want to encourage other women also to aspire to be leaders in their communities. We have local council elections at
the end of this year, and we need more women in politics. But there are many ways that you can make a difference and show leadership. I want to acknowledge the incredible women out there and encourage you to mentor and be a strong role model to others. You never know what that might mean to someone, or if it's time for a change, maybe take that leap of faith –you never know where that might lead you.
Happy International Women's Day!

BEAUTY GOES beyond the skin
HEALTH and appearance are deeply intertwined, evolving throughout our lives. Recognising this, nurse practitioners Kate Moroney and Tara Jones established Fresh You, aiming to deliver safe cosmetic injectable treatments in regional Victoria.
As two of around 2,000 nurse practitioners in Australia, Kate and Tara can diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions. While the allure of diminishing wrinkles initially draws many to Fresh You, Tara said that underlying health factors often contribute to cosmetic concerns.
“Clients frequently present with skin or ageing worries, but we’ve discovered a pattern of underlying issues, such as gut health or hormonal imbalances, exacerbating these concerns,” she explained.
"As nurse practitioners, we've gained extensive healthcare knowledge and hospital experience, which we maintain part-time alongside managing Fresh You.”
The duo recognises the intricate interplay between hormonal fluctuations, menopause and skin concerns – a nexus where their roles as nurse practitioners prove invaluable.
"Hormonal imbalances can manifest in skin issues, and as nurse practitioners, we facilitate referrals for appropriate medical intervention," Kate said.
Navigating women's health often entails challenges in finding tailored medical support, a reality Fresh You endeavours to address.
Tara said, "Conversations surrounding appearance can feel more comfortable than

In addition to anti-ageing treatments, Fresh You can assist with other skin concerns, teeth grinding, hay fever and weight loss, all guided by a genuine desire to enrich health, wellness and confidence.

Kids and their crazy ideas might just hold the key
By Deanne Jeffers
YOUNG people are the most affected by the crises facing our world. They are also the ones with the most innovative ideas and energy to build a better world. With this in mind, 40 students from three local secondary schools put their minds together to generate transformative innovative ideas.
Across two-days last week, Year 9 students from St Anne’s College, Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) and Goulburn Valley Grammar College (GVGC) participated in Crazy Ideas College’s (CIC) ‘Social Innovator’ program, a workshop designed to equip young people with the skills and confidence to invent services, programs and products that enrich lives within the
community.
‘Farm for a Day’, designed by students at St Anne’s College and GSSC seeks to give local young people experience on a farm, to teach understanding of farming processes and to encourage young people to think about the work that goes into growing food for consumption.
Other projects were That’s Mental, a board game teaching about mental wellness; Lil Energy, toys to teach about renewable energy; A Bloody Good Box, ensuring access to period products; Sparring Co., to get kids to be more active; Pressure Pal, reducing stress; Sniff Menus, making dining more accessible for neurodivergent people; Extra Parent Program, providing youths from
dysfunctional families with mentors and a safe space without foster care; Healthy Bargain, making fresh food more accessible; and Learn to Earn, addressing low levels of aspiration and confidence in students, particularly after the COVID pandemic.
Initiating partner, Greater Shepparton City Council, and supporting partners Greater Shepparton Foundation and La Trobe University, teamed up with CIC to provide the workshop. Further, students got to pitch their ideas to local organisations and businesses and get feedback in real time
All ideas will now be showcased on CICBeyond (https://cicbeyond.com) –an online platform to share, celebrate and connect these ideas with the community.

Beat of the African drum
By Aaron Cordy
THE beat of the Djembe and the vibrant voices of the St Paul’s African choir uplifted the gathering at Shepparton's African House when Ras Ato hosted his West African Music and Food Party. The crowd revelled in the hands-on experience when One Spirit African Drumming and Dance performed, then passed out the traditional djembe drums for everyone to try. Benjamin Sam Ato author of Good Vibration African Cookbook: Ras Ato's Good Vibration African Cookbook, has been sharing his love of African food, music and culture around the state.

Shepparton sprints to success at State Championships
By Dillon Shelley
SHEPPARTON Athletics Club has made their presence known at the Victorian Track & Field Championships held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Despite being a small regional club with the challenges of extensive travel, the club's athletes showcased impressive performances.
Among the representatives, Jack Abbruzzese competed in the U16 high jump, long jump, and 100m hurdles. He secured 6th place in both the high jump and long jump finals. However, his moment of glory came in the 100m hurdles, where he clinched a bronze medal.
Elijah McLeod, another U16 high jump participant, finished in a commendable 8th place. In the U16 1500m race, Kazadi Kadima demonstrated his prowess by securing a silver medal, a remarkable achievement.
Jack Gospel, representing the club in the U18 1500m event, fought hard to secure 14th place in the final. Meanwhile, in the U17 category, Alice Ludlow, despite battling illness all week, showed true grit to bring home a silver medal in the shot put event.
Christopher Martin competed in the U17 100m and 400m, demonstrating his speed and endurance. Cassandra Mayne, in the U15 long jump, placed 10th overall in her event.
Rob Mayne, the club secretary, expressed his delight at the club's performance. "I'm very happy with the results," he said. "It's great to see our athletes represent Shepparton so well and achieve these results. We’ll be back down again this weekend for the second part of the event, so we’re very much looking forward to that.”
Eagles soaring towards Haisman Shield finals
IN a thrilling Cricket Shepparton contest, Katandra has positioned themselves on the brink of victory against Nagambie, which would secure them a spot in the upcoming Haisman Shield finals. Nagambie, who chose to bat after winning the toss, were restricted to a score of 124 in 49.2 overs.
Nagambie's top scorer, Mitchell Winter-Irving, was run out by Jedd Wright at 31 runs, while captain Mark Nolan was dismissed by Andrew Riordan after scoring 26. The
rest of the team struggled to contribute significantly, with the next highest score being Jonathan Moore's 18.
Katandra's bowling attack was led by co-captain Jedd Wright, who claimed four wickets for 26 runs. Andrew Riordan also shone, taking two wickets for 28 runs. The rest of the Eagles' bowling line-up, including wickets from Corey Hickford, Hadleigh Sirett, and Scott Richardson, all maintained an economy rate below 2.5.
In response, Katandra ended the day's play at 0-50, with
openers Benjamin Pedretti and Ben Clurey remaining not out at 21 and 26 runs respectively. Nagambie's bowlers, despite their efforts, were unable to make a breakthrough.
The Eagles are now in a strong position to secure a win this weekend. They need only 75 more runs, and with a full batting line-up still to come, including an in-form Andrew Riordan, victory and a place in the finals seems well within reach.
