Tom Collins Drive riverbank stabilisation works complete

WORKS to stabilise the banks of the Goulburn River at Aquamoves have been completed by local contractor APEX Earthworks.

The erosion on that patch in the Goulburn River after the October 2022 floods was at its worst, with clear damage that threatened the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike if left unchecked.

Over 1,380 tonnes of rock from local quarries were strategically placed to stabilise the bank and prevent more damage in the future.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s director of infrastructure, Gary Randhawa, thanked the community for their patience while the works were undertaken.

“These stabilisation works were necessary to protect the riverbank from further damage and we thank Aquamoves members and the community for their patience and understanding while the works took place,” Gary said.

“The end result has stabilised the site and ensured the area is safe for motorists and pedestrians. We now look forward to adding some new vegetation which will further enhance the picturesque river views which the community love and enjoy.”

THE

of maintaining equipment amongst responding to emergencies in the community is now a lot less laborious for members at Cosgrove & Pine Lodge Fire Brigade, having benefitted from a grant for a new drying rack.

Jason Watts, Cosgrove & Pine Lodge Fire Brigade captain, said the $8,200 grant from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) will assist firefighters to dry out hoses, eliminating health and safety risks and making it simple to detect wear and tear on equipment.

“Previously to dry the hoses, we’d have to lay them on the ground in the shed after a job, which creates an OH&S issue. Otherwise, we would have to rely on neighbouring brigades' facilities, which then takes more time from members that

could be spent with family,” he said.

Volunteers played a crucial role in the implementation of these upgrades, contributing their time and effort to install and assemble the drying rack kit and concrete slab.

Cosgrove & Pine Lodge Fire Brigade is a small but mighty rural CFA branch with around 26 members and has a proud history of resourcefulness and proactive efforts to improve its facilities. Previous upgrades, including the acquisition of a quick-fill pump trailer through a Bendigo Bank community grant, and renovations done 10 years ago to insulate and line the shed, install a kitchenette and provide air conditioning, have significantly enhanced the comfort and functionality of the brigade's premises.

UPGRADES... Cosgrove & Pine Lodge Fire Brigade received an $8,200 grant to purchase a new drying rack for their fire hoses. This eliminates health and safety risks associated with previous drying methods and allows for easier equipment inspection. The brigade’s volunteer members also contributed time to install the rack, demonstrating their dedication to improving their facilities.

New land tax causes pain for homeowners and renters

TAX INCREASE... State Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, has hit back at the State Government’s land tax hikes, saying that by lowering the tax-free threshold for land tax from $300,000 to $50,000 and introducing an additional flat tax of up to $975, the government has increased the tax base at the expense of Victorian homeowners, which will also cause pain for renters. Photo: Supplied

STATE Member for Shepparton District, Kim O'Keeffe, has raised concerns about the State Government's Land Tax hikes, and the financial impact this will have on Victorian residents.

She said that by lowering the tax-free threshold for land tax from $300,000 to $50,000 and introducing an additional flat tax of up to $975, the government has increased the tax base at the expense of Victorian homeowners, which will also significantly impact renters.

"I've been approached by many concerned people from across the Shepparton district who have been directly financially impacted by these tax increases," Ms O'Keeffe said.

Treasurer Tim Pallas's announcement that the average Victorian household will face an additional $1,300 in expenses each year due to this hike is particularly alarming for the Shepparton District, where people and businesses are already navigating a challenging economic climate, she said, adding that the unexpected land hikes have also placed an unnecessary strain on landowners.

"Property owners who had planned for their

future are now finding themselves in a position where they must either pass on these costs to tenants or sell their properties," Ms O'Keeffe said.

"These changes have threatened their financial security and placed additional pressure on the rental market, potentially driving up costs for renters at a time when affordability is already a critical issue."

Victorians pay the highest property taxes in Australia. The average property tax per person across this year is $2,120, compared to $1,646 in New South Wales and $1,343 in Queensland.

"This move by the Labor Government is yet another example of their economic mismanagement, punishing Victorians who are working hard to maintain their livelihoods," Ms O'Keeffe said.

The tax has been increased as part of the Government's COVID-19 debt levy. The Victorian Government has highlighted that the land tax only applies to investment properties and second homes, and that the family home will remain exempt.

Council awards waste services contract for the region

GREATER Shepparton City Council has awarded the waste services contract for the kerbside waste collection services for a period of 7.5 years, with an optional 7.5 year extension, at an Additional Council Meeting held Tuesday.

Three businesses were successful in their tenders for the contract, Foott Waste, Cleanaway, and BioMix.

Foott Waste will be responsible for the collection of various residential waste types, including general waste (red lid), comingled recyclables (yellow lid), Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGOgreen lid), and glass materials (purple lid). Additionally, Foott Waste will oversee the bulk transport of collected waste to designated processing facilities.

Cleanaway's successful bid involves the acceptance and processing of recyclables, as well as the handling of glass materials throughout the contract term. Meanwhile, BioMix has secured the contract for FOGO acceptance and processing services.

Through the completion of this tender, Council seeks to provide reliable waste and recycling services for Greater Shepparton, develop a robust local waste and recycling industry, and encourage new infrastructure growth and investment

in the region. The contract also seeks to introduce service enhancements to contribute to the delivery of the State Government’s Recycling Victoria Policy, meet community expectations, and maximise the region’s diversion of waste from landfill.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, congratulated each of the successful businesses on their tender.

“This is an extremely important contract for Council, it is the highest value contract which Council enters into. This contract ensures that Council provides best value and fit-for-purpose services to our community now and into the future, over an initial period of 7.5 years with an option for another 7.5 year extension,” he said.

“A positive economic outcome has been achieved by undertaking this process, one which will meet the needs of the community as well as creating many circular economy opportunities within the local Waste and Resource Recovery industry.

“Congratulations to each of the successful tenderers. Council looks forward to working with these businesses to achieve our waste and recycling goals over the coming years.”

Calling all car enthusiasts!

FOLLOWING a successful debut last year, the Melbourne to Move (M2M) rally will return Saturday, April 20, ending with the Finish Line Festival at Shepparton’s Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE).

Showcasing a range of vehicles from classic cars to vintage buses, the rally and festival promise food, entertainment and automotive appreciation for enthusiasts and community members alike. Priced at $20 per ticket, the festival, starting at 4pm, includes museum access, live music, and a gourmet barbecue by The Woolshed @ Emerald Bank.

MOVE board director Adam Katsoutas expressed excitement for the event, emphasising its role in bringing families and enthusiasts together while supporting the museum's mission.

“As an independent, not for profit entity, MOVE relies on events like Melbourne to MOVE to raise funds and awareness of our museum,” Mr Katsoutas said, adding, “The

event will show an impressive lineup of vehicles and support our mission to celebrate and preserve automotive history.” The rally kicks off with breakfast at the CMV Truck and Bus dealership in Derrimut, followed by a scenic drive through Victoria's countryside with stops in Tooborac and Toolamba for lunch before reaching MOVE.

City of Greater Shepparton mayor, Cr Shane Sali, hailed the rally as a significant attraction for the region, praising MOVE for its depiction of transport industry history. He said, “We are extremely fortunate to have such an impressive museum like MOVE in our region’s backyard.”

Tickets for the rally are $180 for car and driver, with $40 for additional passengers. Those unable to join the rally can still enjoy the Finish Line Festival. Mayor Sali elected to advisory panel

GREATER Shepparton City Council mayor, councillor Shane Sali, has been elected to the Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel for 2024 representing Regional Cities

The Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel (LGMAP) consists of 10 mayors from urban, regional and rural communities across Victoria. The panel representatives, who change each year, meet with Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne four times a year to offer advice on legislative, regulatory, strategic and policy issues

This year’s panel is expected to focus its work on governance, representation and inclusion, which Cr Sali said were important topics in regional cities, including Greater Shepparton.

“It is fantastic to be elected to the 2024 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel. This provides Greater Shepparton and Regional Cities Victoria with a seat at the table, allowing me to regularly meet with the Minister and raise important issues affecting our communities,” he said.

“Regional cities are the backbone of Victoria, and we have an important role to

play in advocating for positive change in the local government space. I look forward to working alongside the other mayors on this year’s panel to share ideas and advocate for the needs of our regions.

“There is a great mix of representatives across the panel and I am extremely proud to be elected to represent Regional Cities Victoria," Cr Sali said.

Disability Commissioner visits Shepparton

continued from front page

VDWC commissioner, Dan Stubbs and his team were in Shepparton last week to begin building connections with people with disability. So they understand what VDWC is and that they have been set up to help people with disability.

The service commenced in July 2020 at a time when lockdowns had become a reality, which has hindered their ability to get out amongst the community they are here to protect.

“We were set up during COVID and we couldn’t come out to the community in our first two years. It's taken a bit of time, but now we’re wanting to get to regional Victoria, to let all Victoria know that if they’ve got a problem with a disability service or disability worker, they can complain to VDWC,” said VDWC commissioner Dan Stubbs.

“Shepparton is our first stop. Shepparton has

gone through some really challenging things over the last couple of years. And it’s really common for organisations like ours to go to some of the other regional centres that are maybe a bit easier, a bit closer or get a bit more attention sometimes. Shepparton's right in the middle of Victoria with a lot of services, with a lot of people with various kinds of needs, and I think it was the right place to come to first.

“We’re still in a growth phase. The hope is that we continue to build awareness and trust with the disability community. We are asking people with disabilities and their families to do maybe the hardest thing they’ll ever do, which is complain about their disability support worker or their service. That requires good trust and knowledge about the fact that we’ll do the right thing.

“We know there are things happening in the

disability service sector that we’re not hearing about. And so, as we learn more, we’ll be able to drive improvement and safety.”

If you have concerns about someone working

with disabled people, or want to learn more about VDWC, visit www.vdwc.vic.gov.au or call 1800 497 132 between 9.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Breaking fast for community, unity and understanding

UNITY was the theme last Saturday night when the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Shepparton hosted an Interfaith Iftar Dinner at the South Shepparton Community Centre. The event brought together representatives from six major religions: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Islam to discuss the significance of fasting to the different religions.

Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims to break their fast after sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. It's a time when physical food is converted into spiritual food according to Islamic teachings. It is about gratitude to God for all the gifts that sustain a human life from cradle to the grave.

Among the distinguished guests were leaders and representatives from various sectors of our community, including Kim O’Keeffe MP, the State Member for Shepparton, Cr Shane Sali, the mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council,

Gurmeet Singh from the Sikh-Gurdwara, Shepparton, Rev. Jerome Francis of St. Augustine's Anglican Church, Dr Tejraj Tawde, a Consultant Psychiatrist at GV Health, Orthodox Rabbi Ralph Genende, the Director of Jewish Life in Melbourne, Rev. Chris Parnell, the executive officer of the Shepparton Interfaith Network, along with key figures from local organisations like Search and Rescue Shepparton, the Country Women’s Association of Victoria, Shepparton Police Community Engagement, U3A, and Soroptimist International Shepparton.

“I am filled with gratitude for the support, enthusiasm, and participation of everyone involved. This event was a milestone in our journey towards building a more inclusive and understanding community. Let us continue to cherish these moments and strive for more opportunities to come together in such meaningful ways,” said Aziz Bhatti, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Shepparton.

Have it serviced every two years to keep it safe from fire.

Since your home solar energy system is out there in the sun, wind and rain, it’s important to show it some love and keep it safe. Have it serviced now and every two years by a licensed electrician.

Learn more at esv.vic.gov.au/solar-safety

Service your solar PV system and reduce safety risks.

Energy Safe Victoria and Solar Victoria have launched the Show Your Solar Some Love campaign to encourage Victorians to service their solar PV systems to avoid safety risks such as fire.

Energy Safe CEO Leanne Hughson said solar PV systems needed to be serviced for the same reason your car needs servicing; to ensure it’s always running safely.

Over 2022-2023, Energy Safe investigated 53 fires related to rooftop solar. This follows 28 fires being investigated in the previous year by the regulator. “These fires could have been prevented if the solar PV system had been serviced.” Ms Hughson said.

Victorians using solar are encouraged to get their systems serviced by a licensed A-Grade electrician at least once every two years.

Hot and cold temperatures, wind, rain and other extreme weather events can cause damage and wear to solar PV installations. Regular servicing mitigates this risk, ensuring they are working safely and efficiently. Audits conducted by Energy Safe have found a major cause of solar PV system fires was moisture

impacting DC isolators – a switch that stops electricity flowing through the system in emergency situations.

Victorian Government research shows that fewer than half of Victorians are aware of the importance of servicing their solar PV systems, which involves electrical testing of the components that make up a solar panel system, as well as inspecting the integrity of equipment and cabling.

Solar Victoria CEO Stan Krpan said it was important for homeowners to set up a maintenance plan with their solar retailer to ensure their system was operating properly, safely and efficiently.

Solar Homes Program retailers and installers can help customers keep their system working safely and at its best, so it maximises their savings with solar.

“Safety underpins everything we do, and our customers should feel reassured,“ Mr Krpan said. “Solar Homes installations meet robust safety and quality standards, including the use of authorised retailers, accredited installers and carefully assessed products. And safety has improved dramatically as a result of our program, with only 0.1 percent of installs audited needing to be rectified for safety reasons.”

Bird bonanza at Moodie’s Swamp

Record numbers flock to wetland

The swamp has remained fairly full following the heavy rainfall in January, which has provided perfect conditions for waterbirds

A RECORD number of native birds has been recorded at Moodie’s Swamp as part of the Victorian Wetland Monitoring and Assessment Program for environmental water.

Last month more than 130 Eastern Great Egret and 100 Plumed Egret were counted at the wetland.

It was the largest Victorian count of Plumed Egrets in 20 years, second only to Barmah-Millewa Forest in 2001.

Simon Casanelia from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority said the large number of native birds at Moodie’s Swamp was very pleasing.

“The swamp has remained fairly full following the heavy rainfall in January, which has provided perfect conditions

for waterbirds,” Mr Casanelia said. “The numbers and rich variety of species were very pleasing.”

and more than 25 different species.

He said researchers from Arthur Rylah Institute counted almost 6,000 waterbirds

“They recorded 69 Royal Spoonbill, thousands of Straw-necked Ibis and six Brolga, two pairs with one chick each, which is very promising.”

WARM AUTUMN PROMPTS WARNING... Despite

Snake sightings continue

in Shepparton

ESPITE the shift from summer into autumn, the Goulburn Valley continues to experience a spate of snake sightings. The unseasonably warm weather has seen these serpents maintain their activity, posing a potential threat to locals and their pets.

Snakes, still driven by the remnants of summer's warmth, are often only seeking food, but this leads to increased encounters with humans. Experts advise remaining still when coming across a snake, as they are likely to avoid confrontation unless provoked.

In the event of a snake bite, it's crucial to call emergency services immediately, apply a roller

bandage to the affected area, and keep the limb lower than the heart. If communication is not possible, self-application of a pressure bandage is recommended before seeking medical assistance.

Pets, particularly dogs, are also at risk. Several snake bite incidents have been reported. Pet owners are urged to keep their yards tidy to minimise snake hiding spots and to watch their pets for symptoms such as vomiting, sudden collapse, drooling, lethargy, and paralysis. Immediate veterinary attention is crucial for the best chance of survival.

40 DEGREES AND 40 ILLEGAL FIRES REPORTED OVER LONG WEEKEND

AS temperatures soared to a scorching 40 degrees over the Labour Day long weekend, Victoria's public land fire authorities were dismayed by the reckless behaviour of some campers who ignored fire danger warnings and restrictions, resulting in over 40 illegal fires.

Despite a day of Total Fire Ban declared across five weather districts, including the South West, Central, Wimmera, North Central, and West and South Gippsland regions, numerous campers flouted regulations by lighting campfires or leaving them unattended in perilous conditions.

Conservation Regulator and Forest Fire Management Victoria authorised officers patrolled campsites statewide, intervening to prevent further fire ignitions and handing out fines and official warnings to those breaching campfire rules.

Kate Gavens, chief conservation regulator, expressed deep concern and said, "Bushfires can have devastating consequences, and it is simply not acceptable for campers to be unaware of the fire risks and restrictions, particularly during a Total Fire Ban."

TAKE CARE... Victoria’s public land fire authorities have expressed dismay over the Labour Day long weekend’s reckless behaviour, with over 40 illegal fires recorded despite scorching temperatures and Total Fire Ban warnings. Campers are reminded to prioritise fire safety and adhere to regulations, particularly with Easter around the corner. Photo:

Victoria, emphasised the importance of responsible fire management, urging campers to reassess the necessity of lighting fires in hot, dry, and windy conditions. He stressed, "It only takes one campfire to escalate into a major fire, posing a significant threat to lives and properties."

Campers are reminded to stay informed about fire danger ratings and restrictions, especially on Total Fire Ban days, by checking weather forecasts and fire warnings through official channels such as the Bureau of Meteorology and VicEmergency.

Additionally, reporting illegal and unattended campfires to authorities at 136 186 is crucial in preventing potential bushfire outbreaks.

With penalties for fire-related offences ranging from fines to imprisonment, it's imperative for campers to prioritise fire safety and adhere to regulations to protect themselves and the environment.

EThree bushwalks under three hours away

AGER to get out and experience the great outdoors but you’re not sure where to start? This guide features three hiking trails, all boasting stunning scenery and diverse views, all accessible within a three hour drive. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or a casual walker, there's a trail waiting to be explored.

Explore Mount Beauty Gorge

Difficulty: Easy

DISTANCE: 2 hours and 30 minutes from Shepparton

LENGTH: 3.5km to 4.2km

DURATION: Around 1 hour

TERRAIN: Clear, well signed marked track, but it can be slippery.

This walk takes you through a beautiful gorge and swimming holes near Mount Beauty, Victoria. The trail is considered easy to follow and it has no obstacles until the last hundred or so metres where it can be difficult crossing if water levels are high. Whether you can access the end of the trail or not, it is a beautiful walk with the highlights being mountain views, the cool gorge, plus the chance to cool off in the crystal clear swimming pools if it’s hot enough. Mount Beauty has a huge range of walking, BMX and mountain biking trails, so you can tailor your route to suit your fitness level, experience, and the time you have available.

Climb Mount Major

Difficulty: Moderate

DISTANCE: 28 minutes from Shepparton

LENGTH: 4.7km-7km, depending on routes you choose.

DURATION: 1h 30min to 3hrs.

TERRAIN: Dirt, gravel and concrete tracks.

Located a stone throw from Shepparton in the picturesque town of Dookie, Mount Major is popular for both walkers and mountain bike enthusiasts. Mulana nin iyoga (Yorta Yorta for ‘Spirit of the Stone’) is a 4.7km

Wreturn trail on the northern side of Mount Major, while the southern side has a vast network of mountain biking trails. Fantastic views of the surrounding countryside (which change every season), can be seen from the summit.

Hiking Razorback

Difficulty: Hard

DISTANCE: 2 hours and 50 minutes from Shepparton

LENGTH: 22.7km, approximately 11.35km per day over two days

DURATION: Two days, camping overnight. Walking approximately three hours each day.

TERRAIN: Rocky, icy and steep in some parts.

Razorback Track is a popular trail in Victoria’s Alpine region. It is a stunning scenic walk with changing scenery and challenging terrain ideal for experienced hikers and people of good fitness. If you’re looking to embark on overnight hiking, this is a great choice. From Razorback Track you can climb Victoria’s second highest mountain, Mount Feathertop, and take refuge at Federation Hut.

As the name Razorback Ridge suggests, you’ll be traversing across a high alpine ridge to reach your destination. In winter, it can get very slippery on moss and rocks, and you should be prepared for ice and snow with the appropriate gear, including microspikes or snowshoes above 1400m. During summer, be wary of leeches and snakes. Gaiters are recommended and always ensure you have a first aid kit on hand.

The route finishes at Federation Hut campsite, making it the perfect base for the night before your ascent to the summit. The campsite has toilet facilities, a water tank, hut with a fireplace, table and seating.

You will have to scramble over some very high areas on difficult terrain navigating this out and back track, hiking experience is essential. The evolving scenery and panoramic views make this a must do hike in my opinion.

HETHER you are swag and fishing rods in the boot roughing it or in a fully decked out campervan and caravan glamping, camping is one of the great pastimes many Australians love. There are many brilliant places to explore around this beautiful country we call home, with some fantastic free camping spots in the Goulburn Valley. Moora Recreation Reserve, 49 Heathcote-Moora Rd, Moora. Just out of Rushworth, with Drop toilets and drinking water, with easy access for campers and trailers.

Big & Little Toms Beach, Unnamed Road, Cobram. Set on the mighty Murray River, with open sandbars for swimming, with lots of space and easy access, where you might get lucky enough to spot a koala or two.

Murchison Campsite, Murchison-Mooroopna Road, Murchison. Set on the Goulburn River, despite the recent floods this is still a hidden gem of a campsite, with sandbars for swimming and fishing.

James Camping Reserve, Lima East Road, Lima East. A little out

of Benalla on Black Charlie Creek is a fantastic haven leading into the mountains. There are drop toilets and fire pits at this out-of-the-way campsite.

Majors Creek Reserve, Mitchellstown-Graytown Road, Mitchellstown. This is a great spot for boating and swimming, with plenty of space and drop toilets at some campgrounds.

Engines roar at Easter Tractor Pull event

QUAMBATOOK, nestled in the northwest of our state, proudly hosts Australia’s only permanent, purpose-built tractor pulling complex. Every year, the Australian Tractor Pull Championships draw large crowds, eager to witness the impressive display of machinery and the raw power of modified tractors pulling weights down a 100m track.

The event kicks off at 1pm with the vintage tractor pull. From 3.30pm onwards, modified tractors and trucks take to the track to showcase their power. During the evening tea break, enthusiasts can mingle with the pulling teams and enjoy aerial stunts by Paul Bennett Airshows, with live country music performed by 2023 Australian Idol contestant, Conor Bulger. The action-packed day wraps up under the lights at approximately 10pm.

Off the track, visitors can explore market stalls, enjoy kid’s sideshow entertainment, and sample from food and drink stalls. For those with a passion for diesel, a walk through the modern 'trucking industry' display, featuring a fleet of trucks, is a must. Those who appreciate a touch of nostalgia

The Australian Tractor Pull Championships will take place at the Quambatook Tractor Pull Complex on Easter Saturday, March 30. For the latest updates, follow them on Facebook. For more information, contact Tim Betson on

Limited-time wine sale: 13 varieties under $10 at Phillips Cellars

THERE is still time to take advantage of incredible savings on quality Australian wines ahead of Easter at Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre’s annual clean skin sale.

From the highly popular Adelaide Hills Rosé to the enticing King Valley Pinot Grigio, there are also four varieties of white wine, three sparkling and five types of red wine to choose from, priced at $8-$10 a bottle.

For those on a budget, the clean skins sale provides some fantastic budget-friendly options. All wines have been personally tasted and selected by wine expert and business owner, Paul Phillips.

“If these bottles were labelled, they’d be

sold upwards of $22 per bottle, which means these are great wines to try in slightly harder economic times – and I’ve tried them all, so you can be confident in their quality,” Paul said, adding, “And when you buy a baker’s dozen, you get another bottle for free.”

13 varieties and a buy 12 get one free deal, means that you can indulge in the entire range, many of which are produced locally, but only if you get in quick.

The sale began March 6 and will run through to Easter or until stocks are depleted. Head into Phillips Cellars at 119 Corio Street, Shepparton to stock up on wine before it’s too late.

ALL REVVED UP... The Australian Tractor Pull Championships return to Quambatook over Easter with a spectacular line up of entertainment and displays of tractor pulling, aerial stunts and so much more for passionate motor enthusiasts. 2023 Australian Idol contestant, Conor Bulger will be singing country music during the tea break, performing music from the likes of Slim Dusty, John Williamson, all the way through to Zach Bryan. There is something for everyone to enjoy at Quambatook

Bari claims Cricket Shepparton’s highest honour

SHEPPARTON United's Rehan Bari claimed Cricket Shepparton's Lightfoot Medal with an impressive five-vote lead on Monday night. Bari, a dynamic batting all-rounder, secured the coveted individual prize after a stellar season on the pitch.

a field of talented players, with only two others managing to score over 400 runs and take more than 10 wickets.

Outshining competitors like Tim Arnel, Reinhardt Engler, and Andrew Riordan, who tied with 12 votes each, Bari's victory marks a triumphant return after finishing runner-up in 2017-18.

From his unbeaten 109-run blitz in the second match to subsequent strong performances, Bari's dominance was evident early on. Despite a slight dip in form later in the season, his five halfcenturies and a century secured him the prestigious Lightfoot Medal.

During the 2023-24 campaign, Bari showcased his prowess, accumulating 583 runs at an outstanding average of 58.3 and bagging 12 wickets at 31.4. His consistency and performance stood out in

This latest accolade adds to Bari's impressive collection, which includes three consecutive Williams Family Senior Club Champion awards for Shepparton United, highlighting his consistent excellence on the cricket field.

Cornes won’t cop excuses in Bulldogs’ first-up loss

AFTER a 45-point defeat at the hands of Melbourne to open their 2024 season, there’s one suggestion Kane Cornes can’t cop from the Western Bulldogs.

It’s not just a one-game sample size.

After being in the game up until three-quarter time, Luke Beveridge’s Bulldogs fell away late in the game. The Demons booted six goals to two in the final term after generating 11 scores from just 13 inside 50s.

Inside 50s and contested possessions were ultimately even, while the clearance count was almost identical.

But Cornes highlighted several issues that have plagued the Dogs in recent years and were again on show on Sunday.

Cornes pointed to Melbourne’s 141 marks as a sign of poor defence of the ground from Beveridge’s men, and was also hot on the five-goal swing towards the Demons at the end of the first term and start of the second.

He also believes Beveridge allowed Melbourne captain Max Gawn to do as he pleased after a poor showing when physically targeted by Sydney the week before, and questioned the selection philosophy of leaving out Jack Macrae and making Caleb Daniel the sub.

While Macrae did have a fitness concern, both players are All-Australians.

“Look, they will win their next couple, the Western Bulldogs. They’ll be off Broadway for a while and the pressure will dissipate, they’ll play Gold Coast in Ballarat and then West Coast, and their draw is soft,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast

“But don’t tell me it’s a onegame sample size for the Western Bulldogs. This has been going on for seven years and once again I was watching yesterday thinking this is the exact same Western Bulldogs despite a whole group of new assistant coaches. The same coach is there and the same issues arise after a full preseason of reviewing it and trying

to address it.

“Against a good opposition in tough conditions, essentially they did not want to defend the ground.”

Daniel Pratt, Alex Johnson and Jarryn Geary all joined the Bulldogs’ assistant coaching ranks over the off-season, while Matthew Egan was hired to a new role in the club’s footy department hierarchy.

It came following a review of the Dogs’ operations that was a result of a 2023 campaign that fell short of expectations with 12 wins.

After the year that was in 2023 and Justin Longmuir’s recent contract extension, Beveridge entered the new season as the most under pressure coach across the AFL landscape.

Since winning the premiership in 2016, the Dogs have played finals on four occasions but never finished in the top four.

With games against the Suns, Eagles, Cats and Bombers to come over the following month, the Dogs’ prospects in 2024 will become clearer.

Emerging Cat’s value discussed amid no rush to re-sign

GEELONG speedster Max Holmes

could be set for a big payday if his upward trajectory continues in 2024.

The 21-year-old was hugely impressive in Saturday’s 76-68 win over St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium, helping himself to 23 disposals at 95 per cent efficiency, 10 marks and five inside 50s.

Nick Dal Santo loved the youngster’s game playing primarily as a half back and he thinks that Holmes can go to the next level if his form continues.

“One that impressed last night was Holmes,” Dal Santo told SEN Crunch Time. “I thought his performance showed enough glimpses to say he can go to the next level.

“I’m not sure what grade you put him up to right now, but he can go to the next level in the grading system.

“He changes the game, the dynamic and the style with the use of his legs. He’s running away from people while they stand still.”

With Holmes coming out of contract at the end of the season, Dal Santo discussed what he could be worth on the open market with journalist Josh Gabelich and SEN host Cam Luke.

Gabelich says Holmes isn’t in any rush to re-sign and is set to receive big-money, long-term offers from clubs that have been targeting his services for the past 12 months.

Gabelich: “What’s he worth? This is going to be the talking point with Max Holmes across this year.

“He’s out of contract. He’s a fascinating watch, he’s a Melbourne boy, he’s living down the highway.

“Clubs have been coming for him for the past 12 months. He’s not that close to re-signing right now and he showed his versatility last night.”

Dal Santo: “I’m going throw out a number here and I know the world

is forever changing and what we’re hearing some players are on or about to get is, in my opinion, ludicrous at some stages.

“I’m going to say on the open market he is worth $650,000 (a year).” Gabelich: “At least.”

Luke: “That’s unders.”

Dal Santo: “$650,000 is a good wage in the AFL market.”

Gabelich: “Everything’s about to be increased by 30 per cent, for all of these current contracts, factor that in.”

Dal Santo: “What sort of number would Max Holmes demand on the open market?”

Gabelich: “I think if he sustains his form across the best part of half a season, he’ll be seeing more than $650,000 a year on a long-term deal.

“Long-term offers are going to come this way.”

Luke: “I would say he’s worth $650,000 a year right now.

“That’s why I believe that he’s probably hesitant to re-sign because if he has a year that is indicative of what he did last night … there’s going to be even more offers rolling in for him, and the money will come up.

Adviser editorial: Don’t let our story end

HERE at The Shepparton Adviser, we are committed to providing authentic, locally sourced news.

While social media platforms like Facebook serve as one channel for news consumption, it is essential to recognise that the information originates from dedicated journalists and media .

Facebook doesn’t employ journalists to engage with local communities and report information relevant to readers. We do.

Facebook, as a US-based tech giant, doesn’t have a physical presence in those communities. We do.

We're deeply ingrained in the fabric of our community, attending local events, reporting on significant issues, and supporting important causes.

Unlike Facebook, we have a physical presence and actively engage with our readership, ensuring that our coverage is relevant, accurate, and impactful.

So, the next time you hear, "Yeah, I read about that on Facebook," remember that behind every story lies the dedication and hard work of local journalists who are committed to keeping our community informed.

What Facebook does bring to the ‘news’ conversation are the various noticeboard sites that pop up that offer rumours and misinformation.

Police investigating the disappearance of Ballarat mother Samantha Murphy had to appeal to people to stop theorising about the case on social media sites, some of which were created specifically for that case.

This rumour and innuendo weren’t spread by traditional media, but through the unfettered social media channels.

Facebook has for years happily hosted our more legitimate and responsible content and made trillions of dollars from the eyeballs it attracts.

A few years back the media sector lobbied hard for the Federal Government to establish a News Media Bargaining Code that compelled Facebook to start paying for this news content.

The funding that came out of that agreement allowed us to employ more journalists and invest in more resources.

Facebook has now signalled that it will be walking away from that hard-fought agreement, a move that will cost local jobs and may force some local media outlets to the wall.

The decision by Meta to stop paying for the news it allows to be shared across Facebook and Instagram will have a direct impact on our newspaper and the support we can offer our readers and communities. And it is the same for every small country newspaper across Australia.

It may not seem such a big deal that the news tab on Facebook will disappear, but what if they decide to block all news services, like Meta has done in Canada?

Is it okay that a massive US company can hold Australian governments and businesses to ransom like this?

This decision should be a warning to all small businesses and organisations that use Facebook or Instagram as their only

to Greater

digital platform. What happens if Meta next randomly decides to charge hairdressers for business pages, or block community Pride events?

Not paying fairly for news, and then threatening to block access to media on their platforms is blackmail.

This isn’t just a squabble between giants; it’s about the survival of small newspapers.

It’s about the sustainability of publications that give rural and regional people a voice and record the history of the towns in this region.

This isn’t just about us; it’s about fair compensation for the news we produce. Don’t let our story end.

Stand with us, stand with your local paper.
