Scouting out the Queen’s top award
By Aaron Cordy
1ST NORTH Shepparton Scouts Group’s Millar Carter reached the pinnacle of Scouting achievement for Venture Scouts on Monday, June 3, when he received the Queen’s Scout Award. Millar is only the second NSS to make the achievement in the last five years.
“I was set on it from the start. From Scouts really. I just love everything outdoors. Hiking, canoeing, fishing and other adventurous activities.” said Millar on his achievement and his love for Scouting.
The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest honour you can earn in the Venture section and requires the approval of the Unit Council, and all the award requirements must be completed and approved both within the unit and through Scouts Victoria.
“There were lots of challenges. Not only the challenges of doing the work, but starting
out in the middle of COVID, so that was obviously a challenge. Scouting is outdoordominated, but I got there, I got through.
“If we’re talking about a moment or event, I suppose the couple of hikes, not the couple, the many, many hikes that I've done. I really just enjoy getting out and disconnecting.
“On a deeper level, is what I've learnt about myself, that I can always push myself further than I ever really thought possible. And really, I suppose, it’s more about the service to others, making sure that we help out absolutely whenever we can, even if it means compromising your own goals.”
18-year-old Millar will take next year off to concentrate on his chief's apprenticeship in Geelong, with a mind to join the Rover Scouts the following year. Knowing that his love of outdooring and adventure will always be a passion of his.

Locals receive King’s Birthday honours
TWO Shepparton locals were amongst the 737 Australians to receive King’s Birthday honours on Monday for service to the community. Lisa McKenzie and Peter Johnson both received Order of Australia Medals in the General Division.
Lisa McKenzie has been a director of Impress, executive director at Fairley Leadership, CEO at United Way Goulburn Valley, CEO at The Community Fund Goulburn Valley, and well known for her work as an executive officer at Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project. Lisa has been a pillar in the community for the tireless work she has done
Peter Johnson was a founding member of Goulburn Valley Grammar School, a founding member of the Wanganui Secondary College school council, a board member of Goulburn Valley Water, a chairman of the Remuneration and Performance Committee and the Audit Committee, a long-serving member of Shepparton Central Rotary, while he practised law with Cameron’s Lawyers.
Valley Hwy Bypass Action Group.
While many great Australians were honoured on the day, it was not without controversy when former premier Daniel Andrews also received the nation's highest honour. The OAM comes just eight months after the polarising premier quit politics, leaving many Victorians still recovering from the 262 days of COVID lockdowns, and a state crippled by debt after the Commonwealth games debacle.
Despite the controversy, there were many well-deserving recipients, including Lisa McKenzie and Peter Johnson who have made the Greater Shepparton community proud.
State funeral to honour Aunty Fay Carter OAM
A STATE funeral for Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta Elder Aunty Fay Carter OAM will be held at 10am on Wednesday, June 12 at Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo.
Aunty Fay was a tireless advocate for Victoria’s Aboriginal communities, leading various aged care, childcare, and health agencies, including founding key services. She managed a culturally appropriate aged care centre for Aboriginal Elders for 16 years with the Aboriginal Community Elders Service (ACES).
She was a long-time member of the Victorian Branch of the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC), a founding member of Australia's first Aboriginal women's refuge, and served as chair of the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) for 10 years. She also played a key role in achieving a native title settlement for the Dja Dja Wurrung People.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Aboriginal Community Elders Services via acesinc.org.au/ about-us/donate. The opening of the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence has been postponed out of respect to her family and the grieving process.
The public funeral will be live streamed. Details can be found at vic.gov.au/AuntyFay.
Aunty Fay was inducted into the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll in 2013 and received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019. Her efforts significantly improved the lives of many Aboriginal people.

SPC cuts canned fruit production amid cost-of-living crisis
The important thing is that SPC survives, has a strong future and that growers are supported
State Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe
ONE of Australia’s largest food processors, SPC, is slashing its canned fruit production and reducing its peach and pear intake by 40 per cent as cost-weary shoppers turn to cheaper imported food.
In a statement Shepparton-based SPC Global Ltd recently informed Australian suppliers of “the difficult decision,” due to declining demand for their canned peaches and pears, saying that customers are purchasing alternative products imported from countries such as South Africa and China, where production costs are lower.
It is another blow for producers who have been grappling higher costs and smaller profit margins, with retailers offering their own branded fruit products that utilise fruit grown in countries with cheaper costs.
Australian fruit growers are now faced with having to pull out trees or sell to other markets to stay afloat.
State Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, highlighted the need for support for fruit growers now facing difficult decisions about their future.
"Our local fruit growers are experiencing significant reductions in demand for their produce and are still trying to work out what these cuts will mean for their businesses and industry and what viable
alternatives they have. Some are looking to sell fruit into the fresh market, wholesalers and smaller supermarkets,” she said.
"The important thing is that SPC survives, has a strong future and that growers are supported."
"This is a wake-up call to state and federal governments who must do more to support local industries, jobs, regional economies and alleviate cost of living pressures before other industries are impacted."

The loss of this service is obvious. House maintenance, gutter cleaning, weekly pick-up/ drop-off for elderly housebound residents and grocery shopping. The elderly want to remain independent living at home; however, home help has diminished. Too many services have been reduced or removed from the older generation,

REGIONAL VICTORIA SHORTCHANGED
Dear Editor,
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for regional Victorians, along comes another brutal set of numbers.
Revelations this week that road and rail projects across the state have blown out by a staggering $12.7B since December are a sledgehammer blow.
To drill deeper, the ballooning costs are costing Victorians an extra $83.6M a day.
Regional roads are crumbling and in a state of disrepair, yet big city projects like the North East Link continue to dish up dastardly numbers of excessive waste.
The $12.7B in blowouts in the past six months is enough to fix half of the potholeriddled regional road network.
Yet our roads remain in disarray, with the Allan Labor Government slashing the road maintenance budget by 75 per cent next financial year.
The roads maintenance budget is 16 per cent lower than it was in 2020.
As the blowouts continue, expect more popped tyres and damaged rims as the neglect hits home.
In the recent State Budget, Labor allocated just $2B to regional Victorians of a $98B total spend on infrastructure and services.
You don’t need to be a mathematician to work out that’s only about two per cent of the total spend. Why the staggering gulf, given regional Victoria provides 25 per cent of the state’s population?
Labor can’t manage money and regional Victorians are paying the price.

Nature calls for 2025 calendar photos
THE year is flying by and photographic entries to feature in the 2025 Goulburn Broken Catchment calendar are now open. The popular calendar is known for its serene collection of local images and information on flora, fauna and natural landscapes.
Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA) project coordinator, Janice Mentiplay-Smith, said the calendar photo competition was a great way for locals to showcase their photographic skills of plants, animals and the environment.
“The competition has been running for more than a decade now and entering it has become quite a tradition for keen photographers and nature lovers,” Ms Mentiplay-Smith said. “The images in this year’s calendar were chosen from more than 300 entries.”
Preference is given to photographs of local plants or animals in their natural state, insects, waterways or other natural features that tell a
story about the Goulburn Broken catchment.
“We always receive extremely positive feedback on the quality of the calendar and the fact it contains amazing images of the local environment, taken by local people,” Ms Mentiplay-Smith said. “I encourage everyone to grab their camera and get out into nature and see what they can find.”
Email your images of birds, animals, plants, insects and places in the Goulburn Broken catchment to janicem@gbcma.vic.gov.au.
To be eligible, photos must be between 2-10MB in landscape format (not portrait) and submitted as a jpeg file attachment (not as a picture inserted into the text of your email). It’s important to include a description of the image in the email subject line (e.g., ‘Whitebreasted Woodswallow’). No USBs or disks. Entries close August 13, 2024.

Monash Park Historical
RiverConnect and Greater Shepparton City Council proudly unveiled the Monash Park Signage Project, on Saturday, May 25. An exciting initiative showcasing Shepparton's rich colonial history.
The origins of this project can be traced back to a visit to Monash Park, when Councillor Bruce Wilson and John Dainton, accompanied by a long-time local Council Officer, discovered that many were unaware of the historical diversion of the river. This revelation led to discussions at the Shepparton Heritage Centre, culminating in the proposal to transform an unused shed in Monash Park into an exhibit focusing on the early particularly focusing on the area along the river at the back of Welsford Street between High and Fryers
awarded a $5,000 community matching grant from the Heritage Signage Committee, under the Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee, on July 26, 2019.
As the heart of Shepparton's early European settlement, Welsford Street stood as the town's centre when the first waves of development swept through. The sixteen historic interpretive panels serve as poignant reminders of the industries and events that shaped the area's history, highlighting the significant contributions made along the riverbank.

TATURA local Jodi Beare was the lucky winner for the 2023 GMCU $25,500 Giveaway top prize winner. She won $5,000 after shopping at SPC Factory Sales last year.
“I was in complete shock when I was told I was the $5,000 grand prize winner, I enter a number of competitions but have never won, so this is wonderful!” she told The Adviser.
Jodi was already a GMCU customer and once she got the news, said she already had a good idea on what she would spend her winnings on. Jodi said, “My TV just died, so this is fantastic timing. I’ve also been wanting to go to New Zealand so I think some of this prize will go towards this, maybe even a cruise too, this is so exciting!”
A further eight people also won $500 each from the grand prize draw. Including Elaine Lodding, who shopped at Coles Express at Riverside Plaza, Nicole
Tomlin who enjoyed a coffee at Café 3620 with her kinder mum’s group, Ginette Yosh won doing some grocery shopping at Woolworths – Safeway Plaza, Claire Lumas won after shopping at WB Hunters, Vanessa Hayes-Beetson spent some money at Trellys Outdoor, Vicki Gillespie after shopping at Autobarn, and Julie Manning won $500 shopping at Woolworths – Shepparton Marketplace. One winner wished to
remain anonymous.
GMCU branch services manager, Heath Barton said, “It’s always great to see our community members being rewarded for supporting their local businesses.”
Whether enjoying a coffee, doing the grocery shopping or picking up some items from your favourite local stores, there are so many ways to win this year’s giveaway. By shopping local you are supporting local businesses and until July 28, it might make you $5,000 dollars richer.

What are some hobbies you have outside of work, and which is one you enjoy the most and why?
Watching Shepparton Swans and Myrtleford Saints play, playing golf and walking my son's dog. I enjoy the footy and netball the most because I get to watch my kids play, walking the dog is a very close second. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Tennis Pro
Tell us honestly, how messy is your desk?
Not going to sugar coat this, but mostly it's good. Sometimes there's nothing and sometimes I don't know where to find a thing!
If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?
Buy property in Melbourne and in Italy, give the kids enough to buy a property each and take them on a very long European holiday with me.
Do you follow any sports, if so, what and why?
Carlton in the footy, think I followed my sister's team when I was little and its stuck. And golf, because I wish I could play like them.
You can only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what dish are you choosing?
Pasta
Three items you would take to a deserted island?
Blistex, water and a device I can play music on. What is your favourite thing about living in the region?
The family, friends and community that make it feel like home.
Tell us a dream holiday you would like to go on?
Over and over again to Italy. I'm sure there's other places in Europe to visit, but Italy is still my favourite. Did you have a New Year’s resolution this year? If so,

What are some hobbies you have outside of work, and which is one you enjoy the most and why?
The main hobby that I have outside of work is art. I love to draw/sketch and paint. It relaxes and clears my mind and it’s challenging to try different types of painting, with acrylics or oil paints.
I love to bake. I had my own business at home years ago, where I baked and decorated cakes for the public and it was very successful at the time.
I also love to go exploring to see waterfalls and hiking to see amazing lookouts, visit places that I haven’t seen before. I have discovered that I really enjoy 4W driving recently, it’s quite a thrilling experience.
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was younger and completed my VCE I honestly had no idea what I wanted to be. I got an apprenticeship in hospitality and become a qualified chef, which I really enjoyed and worked in the industry for over 10 years. Since then, I have worked in retail at a supermarket as a supervisor, then at Amcal and Terry White Pharmacy, until I was offered the job at the GMCU.
Tell us honestly, how messy is your desk?
Ha Ha, some days if you walk into my office there are papers everywhere, however I would describe it as an organised mess and it’s generally all related to the one file I’m working on when it comes to lending. I like to be organised though. I think it’s a necessity in my role, sometimes the job requires more than one file to be worked on at one time, so the desk can have a lot of papers on it.
If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?
If I won the lottery, I would pay out all debts to start with. I would buy a HSV ClubSport Black/Dark Grey V8 and I’d
buy my partner a V8 Ford Mustang. I would help set up our kids for their future. Then buy a Nova, Little Terra caravan and travel all around Australia. Overseas after we have done Australia. I would still like to work, but I certainly wouldn’t be full time, more like very casually.
Do you follow any sports? If so what and why?
I’m not a mad sports person. However, I watch AFL occasionally and support Hawthorn, as my dad is a Hawks supporter, so I just followed the same. My son is a mad footy fan, and we try to go once a year to see the Hawks play at the MCG. I enjoy the tennis also. I have been to the Australian Open before and really loved it. I got to watch Novak Djokovic game and a Serena Williams game also with my daughter at Rod laver arena.
You can only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what dish are you eating?
One meal for the rest of my life is a tough one. Being raised in an Italian family, I’d have to say pasta. Three items you would take to a deserted island?
Not items, but I would take my partner, our kids, and the pets. We can live off the coconuts and mangoes and do spearfishing like a survivor series. What is your favourite thing about living in the region?
My favourite thing about living in the area is that it’s peaceful, I have never been a city person, I hate large crowds. Not a fan of lots of traffic, people and buildings, I like to be able to see stars at night. I love the country life.
Tell us a dream holiday you would like to go on?
I would love to see the northern lights in Norway. Stay in a glass igloo. Sledding with the dogs or reindeer. It would be freezing but absolutely worth it with the experience and scenery.
Did you have a New Year’s resolution this year? If so, what and have you stuck to it?
My new year’s resolution was pretty straight forward. Health and happiness for me and those that I love. Don’t waste any time or attention to those who wouldn’t do the same for you.

Mooroopna welcomes North End Bakehouse: A new chapter for a beloved bakery
AWARD-WINNING North End Bakehouse has opened a new store in Mooroopna, taking over the former Billy’s Bakehouse. Owner Matt began his baking apprenticeship here in 2006 and worked for nearly eight years honing his skills.
North End Bakehouse, renowned for its vanilla slices and hot cross buns, brings delicious baked goods and a fresh vibrancy to the quieter end of Mooroopna. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the business, which started as Mooroopna Hot Bread in 1974. Shekiah and Matt Aylett are now the 10th owners of the bakery.
The bakery holds the title of ‘Australia’s Best Vanilla Slice 2023 & 2024’ and has also won ‘Australia’s Best Hot Cross Bun’ for 2021, 2022 and 2024. They have also placed
2nd and 3rd for Vanilla Slice in 2017, 2019, 2022, and earned top spots for ‘Innovative Hot Cross Bun’ and their Vanilla Slice at the Victorian Baking Show in 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023.
Kiah & Matt aim to expand to more locations, increase local employment, and give back to the community through their delicious creations and business acumen.
Visit the Shepparton store at 2 Grant Court, open Monday-Friday, 7am-4pm, and the Mooroopna store at 52 McLennan Street, open Monday-Friday, 7am-4.30pm, and Saturdays 8am-2pm.

Football previews R10
KYABRAM V BENALLA
This will be an interesting match and one that Kyabram will need to get the win to keep its place in the top six. Kyabram was good value for their threegoal loss to the undefeated Shepparton last round. Archie Watt, Jason Morgan, Jackson Griffiths, Kaine Herbert, Brad Whitford and Anthony DePasquale were the ones that kept the Bombers close enough all day. In the end, they couldn’t complete the win. But they know that if they can continue their good form then they should make it difficult for the Saints.
I think the Murray Bombers have a game plan to win big games and it is for this reason I am going for Echuca. Tip: Echuca.
SHEPPARTON UNITED V SEYMOUR
This will be an intriguing contest between two teams that will not feature in the September action. Shepparton United has been reasonably competitive in most games in 2024, with the exception of a couple of defeats, including the one last round against a much-improved Rochester. Seymour has won once in 2024 and sits in 11th spot on the ladder.
The Saints had 8 different goal-kickers in their first win of 2024 which lifted them off the bottom of the ladder and up to 10th. Nick Mellington, William Martiniello (first game since the opening day), Sam Begley, Jordan Wolff and James Martiniello were the standouts, especially in that last quarter when it got close. I think the Saints will give the Bombers a run for their money, but the home team should get the win. Tip: Kyabram.
SHEPPARTON SWANS V TATURA
It is the last roll of the dice for the Shepparton Swans if they want to kept their flickering finals aspirations alive. At 2-7 to complete the first half of the season, the Swans would be able to find lots of positives, but one of the negatives has been the many close losses. Outside of one bad loss, the Swans have lost five games by less than 6 points and another by 13 points. Had they at least won two of those games then they would be knocking the door. On the other hand, the Bulldogs have struggled in 2024 and slumped to the bottom of the ladder after Benalla’s win last round.
Chris Ryan, Brad Ryan, Sean McAllister, Xavier Hutchison and Nicholas Watt will be doing their best to try end a run of eight straight defeats in a row.
Jordan Wiggins, Mitchell Trevaskis, Patrick Thompson, Ryan Calogero and Samuel Jackson were the shining lights for the Demons in that loss at Rochester.
Tom Maloney, Jack Murphy, Tom Martin, Nathan Beattie and Nathan Fowler were strong as the Lions came home with a wet sail against the Magpies, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. This is a real flip of the coin game and it will be interesting to see how the Demons come out following the club announcement this week in relation to coach Duane Hueston not continuing in the role beyond 2024. If they can put all their energy into Seymour, then they could get the win. Tip: Seymour.
MANSFIELD V ROCHESTER
This is a massive match in the true sense when it comes to shaping who will play finals in 2024. Rochester has won six on the trot, claiming some huge scalps in that sensational run of form to be sitting in third spot. They have defeated the reigning premier along with Mooroopna and Euroa while winning a thriller at Kings Park. Last round, the Tigers were too strong for the Demons. Andy Henderson (career best 7 goals), Mitchell Trewhella, Matt Kellett, Hamish Hooppell and Adam McPhee were in outstanding in the 71-point win, which included 7 different goal-kickers.
Will Dwyer, Max Clohesy, Tyreece Collison, Zac Clohesy, Zac Alderton and Steele Simpson (six goals) will feel that if they can play their best football for longer than Tatura then they should be able to get the win. Tip: Shepparton Swans.
ECHUCA V SHEPPARTON
The moment of truth has arrived for the undefeated Shepparton. They deserve their place at the top of the tree but they are coming up against one of the best drilled team of the past four seasons, so we are going to find out about their premiership aspirations.
The Murray Bombers appear on track for a three-peat, but the Bears will be desperate to make a statement.
Curtis Townrow, Jack Evans, Liam Tenace, Jack McHale, Benjamin Reid and Matthew Lias will be the ones that will be having plenty to say about the aspirations of the Bears.
The Murray Bombers had 10 different goalkickers in their big win over Tatura and they get premiership defender Cam Valentine back from serving a one-game suspension.
Ashley Holland hasn’t missed a beat since his return post his premiership success at Waaia. He has been dominant and would most likely be leading the Bears best and fairest.
Adam Decicco, Jacob Watts, Bryce Stephenson and Joel Brett were others to play a pivotal role in the grinding win over the Bombers last round. And they had 8 different goal-kickers, which makes them a difficult proposition to match-up on.
Mansfield has been in really good form as well. It has won six games, including a really good result on the road at Euroa before the June long weekend. Nathan Buchanan (four goals), Billy Hogan (four goals), Brett Mahoney, Tom Gardiner, Patrick Marks and Dirk Koenen were important in the win. Coach Jack Hutchins would be impressed with resilience of his group and knows that a win like this will go a long way to helping their top six aspirations. Tip: Mansfield.
MOOROOPNA V EUROA
This is another of those eight-point games. Euroa had a solid win last round, defeating the Lions to draw level on points with sixth-placed Kyabram. That said, they sit outside the top six by 11 percent. Mooroopna had an important win before the June long weekend bye. They accounted for Shepparton United by three goals. But they had a fight on their hands for most of the contest. They blew it open with a four-goal burst in the third quarter which proved the difference in the final wash-up.
Ben Hicks, Bryce Rutherford, Keelin Betson, Isaac Dowling and Jack Lear will be important for the Cats if they are to win to put some breathing space between themselves and the Pies. Will Hayes, Lachie Hill, Michael Barnes, Jack McKernan, Tom Garside, Jett Trotter and Andrew Smith will be important to ensure the Pies keep pace with the top six.
I think, the Pies have a few more options forward of the ball to kick a winning score.

KYABRAM V BENALLA
This is a fantastic opportunity for these two teams to chalk up their first win of 2024.
Neither have been able to get that elusive first win despite playing some competitive netball throughout the year.
Benalla was beaten by 34 goals last round by the improving Shepparton Swans while Kyabram played one of its best games of the year despite going down to the highly fancied Shepparton.
Ella Sheehan, Nat Pritchard and Chloe Elliott were important in the attacking third for the Saints. And they will need to deliver again for the Saints to be in front at the final whistle.
Jemma Hall was a standout for Kyabram in its 20-goal loss to Shepparton. The Bombers debuted two of the club’s promising juniors in Ava Pell and Rose Cunningham, which gave its followers a look into the future.
If Abby Waasdorp and Isla Carver can continue their good form through the mid-court, then it will give the Bomber goalers a chance to put the score on the board.
This is a flip of the coin and I am going for Kyabram by less than 5 goals. Tip: Kyabram.
SHEPPARTON SWANS V TATURA
The Shepparton Swans will be looking to continue its charge towards the top six when it takes on the third placed Tatura on its home courts.
The Swans had a big win over Benalla by 34 goals thanks largely to the efforts of shooter Natasha Atkinson-Brown with 59 goals. Two of the club’s promising juniors, Tazmyn Stovell and Remi Bruton had standout games against Benalla and they will need to play well if given the opportunity by the coaching staff. Sophie Garner and Ella Cirillo will be others that will be important for the Swans.
Tatura sit third after a 41-all draw with Echuca. Julia Clarke and Charlotte Gray combined really well for Tatura in the attacking third. Elise Boyer was important through the mid-court while Jasmine Fraser was important in marshalling the defence when it got tight in the finish.
Fraser’s battle with Atkinson-Brown could prove pivotal to deciding who is in front around 4pm.
GVL netball round 10 previews by Sam Saracino Adviser SPORT
For mine, I think the Bulldogs have too much to lose with defeat so I think they can get the job done to remain in the top 3.
Tip: Tatura.
ECHUCA V SHEPPARTON
This should be a fantastic game of netball and one that will no doubt help shape the top six in 2024.
Shepparton shooter Kim Borger was as ruthless as ever in goals in the win over Kyabram, shooting 24 goals before sitting out the second half. Genna Ogier and Sophie Harmer combined to steer the ship in the second half to ensure a 20-goal win.
This is definitely good coaching by the Bears to be trying many combinations in the front third as it prepares them for September. Paigan Impey was another to contribute in the win and she will be looking to continue her good form against the Murray Bombers.
Lauren Jones and Ash Mangan in defence will have the task of curbing the influence of Borger while Greta Pearson through the mid-court will play an important role to ensure she can get on top to limit supply.
Belinda Lees and the returning Steph Vick will be important in the front third as will Holly Chadwick to help the reigning premier to an important four points. Tip: Echuca.
SHEPPARTON UNITED V SEYMOUR
This is a massive game in the context of shaping the top six. Seymour sits in sixth place with 20 points while United is in eighth with 20 points. These teams are only separated by percentage and a win for United could lift them into the top six if the Swans lose to Tatura or they win by more than the Swans if they defeat Tatura.
Ellie Fuhrmeister was solid as usual for the Lions with 21 goals in the team’s loss to the undefeated Euroa. Star Lions defender, Sarah Szczykulski is in really good form for the Lions in the defensive third which generally helps set up many of the Lions thrusts forward.
Tamara Skinner was important in the win over Rochester with 27 goals. She will be important in trying to get on top of Szczykulski as it could go a long way to helping the Demons overcome the visitors. Co-coach, Laura Cole through the centre and Olivia Kirby down in the defensive third were pivotal in the win over Rochester.
If they can continue their good form, then the Demons will fancy
Harley Reid mania
By Aaron Cordy
NEVER has an 11-game AFL career held more talk, hype and controversy than that of former Tongala local Harley Reid. The country kid set the AFL world alight with ‘Harley Reid Mania,’ especially in Western Australia where he plays for the Eagles.
Harley was already a fixture in AFL circles in 2023 when he was long touted as the best kid in the 2023 AFL draft by a country mile, which only grew after North Melbourne won a game late in the season and saw themselves off the bottom of the ladder and losing pick one. The debate of whether West Coast should pick Harley or trade the pick to another club raged, and the suiters lined up.
West Coast held firm selecting Harley as the obvious number one and boy has he repaid the faith. Leading AFL great Matthew Lloyd to claim he has ‘made West Coast relevant again.’
Harley debuted in round one, but his breakout game came in round four against Sydney when he collected 18 disposals and kicked his first goal. Celebrating with a jumper pull to show fans he was committed to the club.
The following week he was nominated for the Rising Star Award and has averaged 17.8 disposals for his 11 games while kicking eight goals. Not since Ben Cousins has another player spent more time on the front and back pages of the West Australian newspaper.
The bull-like nature that Harley plays has been a standout for the 19-year-old. With his fend-offs and his aggressive tackling rarely seen by someone so new to the game. But it’s that aggressive nature that also cost him the chance at winning

the Rising Star Award and earned him a two-week suspension. And led for calls to change the rule of the award as Harley’s act would not have been an issue in the AFL two years ago.
Award winner or not Harley Reid has more than lived up to the hype and is going to be one of the greats of the game. All eyes will be on him when he is free to play in round 16.
their chances of displacing the Lions from the top six. Tip: Seymour. MANSFIELD V ROCHESTER
This is a great opportunity for these two teams to start the second half of 2024 with a win. Both sit at 2-7 and unlikely to be featuring in September unless they can turnaround their fortunes and chalk up some wins.
Shooter Teal Hocking has returned to the attacking third for Rochester and she was strong in shooting 26 goals. Morgan Dingwell chipped in with support while Bridgette Holt continues her consistent season for the Tigers in the defensive third.
Alex Ball, Molly Rekers and Amy Dixon-Reilly did their best in the round 8 loss to the undefeated Euroa. The trio will be important if the Eagles are to chalk up a third win of 2024.
For me, this is a real opportunity and I like what the Eagles have been able to do this year. They have improved and with that I think they can sneak past the visiting Tigers. Tip: Mansfield.
MOOROOPNA V EUROA
What a cracking contest this promises to be. The best attacking team in Euroa versus the best defensive team in Mooroopna.
Euroa has dropped 586 goals in 2024 at average of 65 goals a match while Mooroopna has only conceded an average of 32 goals from its 8 matches, playing one less game than its rivals.
Mia Sudomirski and Liv Morris have been a dynamic combination for Euroa in 2024 and have been outstanding in goals. Their battle up against Dayna Williams and Caitlin McLachlan will go a long way to deciding who is in front around 4pm.
Eliza Hoare was influential for the Magpies through the midcourt in the win over Seymour.
Her battle with Rhani Hendy will be decisive and whoever can get on top could ensure enough supply for the shooters to do their business.
Ellie Warnock and Tylah Marchbank will be important for the Magpies as they look to remain undefeated.
Their battle with Ash Lancaster and Jacqui Ball will be pivotal. If they can minimise the influence of the Cat goalers, then I think Euroa will remain undefeated. Tip: Euroa.
AFL Road Safety grants
GRASSROOTS football and netball clubs across the state can apply for a share of $600,000 to improve their club as part of an annual road safety grants program.
The State Government and Transport Accident Commission (TAC) have kicked off this year’s TAC Club Rewards program, which encourages local clubs to promote road safety to members during the season.
Now in its fifth year, the program allows AFL Victoria-affiliated football and netball clubs to apply for rewards of up to $10,000 to spend on club initiatives like club transport, new equipment and uniforms or facility upgrades.
So far this year, 134 people have died on Victoria’s roads, and more than half of those deaths (76) have happened in regional areas, where tens of thousands of local footballers and netballers travel for games and training.
Head of AFL Victoria, Greg Madigan, said “Our footballers can cover hundreds of kilometres on the roads every year as they travel to and from training and games, so road safety is something that needs to be front of mind.”
As part of this year’s program, clubs will be asked to start conversations and be part of the campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, with the tagline – ‘Show up for your team. Slow down on the road’.
The TAC Club Rewards Program is part of the TAC’s more than 30-year partnership with AFL Victoria, which aims to empower clubs to develop a culture where all players and members are expected to be safe on the roads.
More information on the Club Rewards Program can be found at tac.vic. gov.au/about-the-tac/community/grants/ tac-club-rewards-program

GRADING EVERY PLAYER as Blues grind down Bombers to move into the top four
JAIDEN SCIBERRAS/SEN
CARLTON has ground its way into the top four, picking apart an inaccurate Essendon in front of 88,510 at the MCG.
It was the most anticipated matchup between the two powerhouses in a decade, and the players’ seemingly felt the occasion early as a number of fumbles made for a hectic opening.
The Blues found the first two majors as Ben held Harry leading to a free-kick goal in the first contest between the McKay twins.
The in-form Tom De Koning put his athleticism on display, covering the ground for five marks and 11 disposals in the opening half.
Carlton continued to surge in the second term, securing five goals to two including two majors for the dynamic Elijah Hollands.
The Bombers found field dominance late in the term but to no avail as the Blues entered the main break 32 points ahead.
A fast start from Essendon saw them nail two of the first three goals to open the third term, continuing their field dominance and dominating the inside 50 count.
Nic Martin had plenty of involvement, but he and the Bombers could not quite make the most of their total control, managing just three majors from their nine scores.
The 15-point Carlton lead looked extremely vulnerable entering the final exchange, but the Blues responded with immediate effect, booting four straight goals in six minutes to kill the contest.
Carlton walked away with the four points, claiming a 15.6.(96) to 9.16. (70) victory over the enemy.
OUR GRADES
Essendon:
Jordan Ridley: A
Excellent again. Intercepted really well, particularly with Essendon’s field dominance, however, was beaten by the Carlton keys in one-onones. 22 touches, 10 intercepts.
Todd Goldstein: B+
Couldn’t match De Konig around the ground but won drastically in the centre. Dominated the hit-outs, led the Bombers in clearances.
Nic Martin: B+
Put on a show in the third term. Was absolutely everywhere, kicked two goals and led the game with 25 disposals. Despite this, Martin desperately needs to improve his usage, going at under 60%, with eight turnovers. Already does so much damage but could do so much more.
Jye Menzie: B+
A great game for the 21-year-old. Seven intercepts and nine marks from his 20 disposals.
Andrew McGrath: B+
Great with the ball in hand, intercepted well.
Zach Merrett: B+
Was followed by Alex Cincotta all night and still managed to find the footy. 21 disposals and 11 tackles, was made to work for it and did.
Sam Durham: B+
Quiet early but very good in the third term. Kicked a goal against the flow in the fourth, finished with a solid 21.Matt Guelfi: B+
Found the sticks when several couldn’t, setting up nine scores to go with his two majors. Having a great year.
Will Setterfield: B
A very solid return, 19 touches before being subbed off with injury in the last quarter.
Jye Caldwell: B
Competed well in the contest, eight tackles.
Jayden Laverde: B
Continues to prove his value as an elite interceptor.
Archie Perkins: B-
Got himself involved with decent impact but needs to use it better. Eight score involvements.
Harrison Jones: C+
Kicked a late one but not a lot of impact considering the inside-50 dominance.
Jade Gresham: C+ Ben McKay: C
Lost out the McKay battle, however, not a whole lot of contests between the two.
Dyson Heppell: C
Was not quite able to have an impact.
Jake Kelly: C Nick Cox: C Kicked the Bombers’ first, couldn’t stay hot.
Nick Hind: C
Had little impact in the front half early, plenty of touch in the third term but could not hit a target entering the 50.
Kyle Langford: C- Jake Stringer: CFirst involvement came late in the second term, that was about it.
Peter Wright: D+
No goals, one mark, well beaten by Weitering.
Elijah Tsatas: N/A Substitute, came on late.
Carlton:
Tom De Koning: A+
Incredible game from TDK. Put his youth on display against the veteran Goldstein, covering the ground to extreme effect. An equal team-high 23 disposals, game-high 11 clearances and 478 metres gained. Putting together some season.
Elijah Hollands: A+
He just keeps on getting better. Impacted all over the ground, three majors, four intercepts and phenomenal impact with ball-in-hand.
George Hewett: A
A very strong performance in and around the contest. Looked after Sam Durham comfortably early while getting involved to full effect
on the offensive. 23 touches, seven tackles.
Charlie Curnow: B+
The best first half Curnow’s had in 2024. Presenting up the ground and sticking the marks, slowed in the second half however the damage was certainly done. Two goals, could have been four, and provided three goal assists.
Adam Saad: B+
kicking two goals.
Patrick Cripps: B-
A much quieter game than accustomed to. Got involved late to claim seven clearances and six tackles but just the 19 touches for the bull.
Multiple defensive efforts against his old side. 20 touches and six intercepts.
Jacob Weitering:B+
Did as expected. Kept Peter Wright goalless, was under immense pressure particularly in the third but won out comfortably.
Harry McKay: B
Certainly won the battle of the brothers in the first half. Not a whole lot to do in the third given Essendon’s dominance and came off ginger in the fourth.
Zac Williams: B
Found a home up forward with two important goals.
Nic Newman: B Poor efficiency but maintained composed in the back half.
Blake Acres: B
A few fumbled balls but generally good.
Alex Cincotta: B-
Was set the task of Zach Merrett, and while it wasn’t an ultimate fail, he certainly didn’t fully contain him. However, had a great final term
Lachie Fogarty: B-
Touches turned to gold. Does not need a lot of involvement to completely alter the Blues’ forward half.
Mitch McGovern: B-
Kicked the first major of the game courtesy of a 50-meter penalty, intercepted well under a lot of Bomber pressure.
Jordan Boyd: B-
Brodie Kemp: C+ Sam Walsh: C+
A very quiet game for the proven ball-winner. Nine touches in the final term flatters his tally, an unusually dim night.
Lachlan Cowan: C+
Matthew Kennedy: C+
Continues to take the role as a third tall, hard to see him securing a massive grade with the task.
Matthew Owies: C+
Lively as always.
Ollie Hollands: C Jack Carroll: CJust the five possessions before being subbed out at 3QT.
Corey Durdin: N/A
Started as the sub, came into the game in the fourth.

Navigate local government elections with council info sessions
LEADING up to the 2024 Local Government elections in October, Greater Shepparton City Council have begun hosting information sessions for both candidates and voters.
Last year, an independent electoral structure review panel was appointed to review the electoral structure of Greater Shepparton City Council. As a result of this, Greater Shepparton will be divided into nine wards with one Councillor representing each ward.
Residents will only be able to vote for candidates who have nominated for the ward their voting entitlement relates to. For most voters, this will be the ward they live in. Candidates will also only be able to nominate for one ward.
Council has already hosted the first general communitybased info session in Mooroopna, with sessions in Tatura and Shepparton planned for potential candidates to get a better understanding of what the role of a councillor entails. These sessions will give insight into time commitments, responsibilities, and general requirements under the Local Government Act 2020. They will also provide information to voters on the new ward structure.
There will also be a Women Candidate Information Session which will explore perceived barriers and flexibility available to support all councillors. Attendees at this session will hear from guest speaker, Member for Shepparton and former mayor and councillor, Kim O’Keeffe.

Government School bonus excludes many students in need, says Opposition
SAVING SOME... The State Opposition have launched a campaign calling for more equitable access to the School Saving Bonus. The $400 bonus will be automatically applied to state school students, but not those attending
THE recent State Budget announced a $400 bonus that will be automatically applied to every Victorian Government school student, yet critics have criticised the bonus as it is strictly means tested for students attending low-fee Catholic and independent schools.
This means that while every high-income family with a child attending a government school will receive this bonus, many lowincome families attending non-government schools will miss out.
The Victorian Liberal Party have launched a campaign calling for more equitable access to the School Saving Bonus.
At some low-fee Catholic schools, more than 50 per cent of students come from
disadvantaged families, yet under current arrangements, only a small percentage of students will be eligible for the School Saving Bonus.
Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, said, “If the Allan Labor Government wants to offer cost-of-living assistance to families, they should do so in an equitable way.
“With commonsense changes, this bonus could provide better value for taxpayers and greater cost-of-living relief for those most in need.”
Lovell said residents across are encouraged to show their support for a more equitable School Saving Bonus by visiting http:// fairschoolbonus.com.au/
