Save our hospitals
By Aaron CordyFEARS and uncertainty about the future of local health services are on the minds of many in the sector as residents of Mansfield rallied on Saturday, June 15 to save their hospital.
Mansfield, like many regional Victorian communities, has been left reeling after it was confirmed at least 20 health services across Victoria will have their funding slashed by the State Government budget cuts. The confirmation comes after leaked documents earlier this year the government's plans for healthcare cost-cutting were originally denied.

Echuca’s new hub on the horizon as construction begins
THE official sod turning ceremony marked the beginning of work on Yallarah, a new community under construction in Echuca. Yallarah will contribute $38M in significant infrastructure enhancements to the local area and deliver over 2,000 homesites, helping to alleviate affordability pressures in regional Victoria.
After receiving its landmark development permit approval in January under the Echuca West Precinct Structure Plan, Yallarah will become the centrepiece of the Echuca community, set to boast the largest display village in the area in addition to plans for a future early learning centre on-site.
The commencement of civil construction marks
a significant step towards making Yallarah a reality and unlocking the supply of residential housing to the greater region.
Founder and managing director of Wel.Co, Andrew Walsh expressed excitement at the commencement of Yallarah’s construction, describing it as the largest infrastructure project the region has seen.
“This new community is a significant undertaking and one that has been of significant importance for several years. We look forward to the delivery of a fantastic new neighbourhood to support the entirety of Echuca for what is one of the largest projects in regional Victoria.”
“As a national developer with a focus on
regional areas, Wel.Co is hugely excited to be entering construction on this landmark project.”
“This is a project that will deliver massive benefits to the local community and economy.”
Yallarah's development will help pave the way for an estimated 4,500 new workers required by 2026 in Echuca and surrounding areas.
Winslow Constructors have begun earthworks, starting with clearing topsoil and levelling the site, followed by sewer and drainage, service connections, and road and concrete works.
More information about the project and updates are available through Yallarah’s construction portal on its website at www. yallarah.com.au.
Safety overhaul planned for deadly Strathmerton intersection
THE Labuan Road-Murray Valley Highway intersection in Strathmerton will receive $2.16M from the Federal Government's Black Spot Program for safety upgrades, 12 months after a tragic accident claimed five lives.
The funding will be used to remove the hump on Labuan Road, upgrade lighting, install lighted speed signs and add new rumble strips. State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell, who has campaigned for these improvements since the 2023 fatality, criticised the State Government for delays.
Ms Lovell expressed relief that funding has been secured, highlighting local reports of near-misses at the intersection. She urged the Minister for Roads to direct Regional Roads Victoria to start the federally funded upgrades immediately.
“Now that the Federal Government has stepped up and supplied funds for the crucial upgrades to this dangerous intersection, I call on the Minister for Roads to instruct Regional Roads Victoria to immediately commence work on these federally funded safety improvements,” Ms Lovell said.
The Black Spot Program aims to reduce crashes by funding safety measures like traffic signals and roundabouts at highrisk locations. The Australian Government allocates $110M annually to this program, increasing to $150M per year starting July 1, 2024.

Kialla Lakes Drive on the Goulburn Valley Hwy (GV Hwy) will receive $226,000 under the Program, Doyles Road/Poplar Avenue will receive $736,000, and a further $870,000 on the GV Hwy/Labuan Road intersection will fund additional safety upgrades, including consideration of a 60km/h speed reduction.

Partnership improving pathways in regional areas
AN initiative to expand tertiary education pathways for First Nations students and those in rural areas was showcased last month in Greater Shepparton.
On Wednesday, May 8, representatives from the Goulburn Murray Tertiary Education Partnership, the University of Melbourne, and La Trobe University gathered at the Rumbalara Football and Netball Club in Shepparton. This partnership aims to increase participation among First Nations students and individuals from low socio-economic and diverse backgrounds.
Federal Assistant Minister for Education Anthony Chisholm praised the initiative. He said, "This partnership supports the Albanese Government’s goals, identified through the Australian Universities Accord, to significantly
increase tertiary education opportunities for students in regional areas."
Senator for Victoria, Jana Stewart, a First Nations woman who grew up in regional Victoria, led the showcase. She emphasised that the partnership would make high-quality education and training more accessible for young people outside major cities.
“The Goulburn Murray Tertiary Education Partnership is a big step to ensuring traditionally underrepresented cohorts – like First Nations and country students – get the same opportunities as anyone else looking to upskill,” said Ms Stewart. “Your postcode shouldn't determine your access to education."
University of Melbourne vice chancellor, Professor Duncan Maskell highlighted the importance of partnerships and outreach programs.
“The quick work to find solutions to local education, training and workforce development challenges has spurred all the institutions involved and community into action,” Professor Maskell said.
“There is now a chance for the government
to build on this solid base to elevate a thriving regional community by creating forums, events and information for families, young people and employers to understand workforce opportunities, ambitions and community-led research projects.”
Letters to the Editor
PETITION TO REMOVE OAM FROM FORMER PREMIER
Dear Editor,
FORMER Premier Daniel Andrews doesn’t deserve a King’s Birthday honour, and I am looking forward to presenting the Governor-General with a petition calling for it to be revoked.
The decision to start a petition against the inappropriate and unjustified awarding of a Companion of the Order of Australia wasn’t taken lightly and the response has been overwhelming.
We at The Nationals will make sure all responses are taken to the highest office. Under no circumstances should Mr Andrews retain the Companion of the Order of Australia, and
We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain.
we will do our utmost to make sure it is removed.
Victorians have been left to pick up the pieces, now burdened with record debt because Mr Andrews couldn’t manage money.
New Premier Jacinta Allan is carrying on the legacy of mismanagement and all regional Victorians are being burdened with the pain. Since the start of Mr Andrews’ reign as Premier, Labor has slapped Victorians with 55 new or increased taxes or charges. The bad news keeps rolling with Ms Allan at the helm. Our finances are a mess. Labor can’t manage money, and all regional Victorians are paying the price.
Mr Andrews failed Victorians and that is nothing to
celebrate. He has done nothing to deserve such a high honour. Follow the link to The Nationals’ petition here vicn.at/ no-award-for-dan

Every beat matters: Supporting children with heart disease
continued from front page
DURING these difficult times, the Byrnes found solace and support from the HeartKids foundation. This nonprofit organisation provides vital assistance to families impacted by childhood heart disease (CHD), a leading cause of infant death in Australia. Shockingly, eight babies are born with heart disease every day, and four young lives are lost each week. It is very common and absolutely heartbreaking.
“When you look at a heart child, you don’t realise they’re unwell. A lot of people don’t know about HeartKids and how common heart conditions are unless they’re faced with it,” said Katherine. “Before we had Elijah, we didn’t realise how many kids actually died from heart conditions every day.”
Katherine’s colleagues at GV Vets have rallied behind the cause. For the seventh year in a row, the team dressed up for “Be a Hero for HeartKids Day” held this past Friday, June 14. Their incredible efforts have raised over $16,568 for the “Elijah, our little warrior” fundraiser.
GV Vets are donating all proceeds from nail trims during June to HeartKids.
“Because HeartKids is a not-for-profit, they rely on donations and funding to keep the service running. They are the difference between parents being able to stay with their children on that journey or having to go back to work and trying to work out some other way of dealing
with everything,” Katherine said. “The support we’ve received from HeartKids has been incredible.”
The Byrne family extends their deepest gratitude to everyone who has participated in the fundraiser or
donated. Your generosity will make a significant difference in the lives of countless families.

Backyard Biodiversity Day offered a chance to learn about beneficial insects, plan low-maintenance gardens, and explore a variety of native tube stock, including Indigenous species.

plenty of opportunities for cuddles and pats.
John Laing's Mini Beasts exhibit, featuring tarantulas and various insects, was also a hit.

House prices on the rise
egional Victoria is experiencing a rise in home prices, as reported by PropTrack.
In May, Australian home prices hit a new record, marking a 17-month streak of growth.
Nationally, home prices increased by 0.30 per cent in May, bringing the year-to-date rise to 2.73 per cent. This represents a 6.68 per cent increase compared to May 2023 and a 9.58 per cent rise from their December 2022 low.
While capital cities like Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide saw substantial gains, regional areas experienced slower growth, with most regions remaining flat in May.
In Greater Shepparton, quarterly growth for all dwellings declined by 0.47 per cent, with houses dropping by 0.55 per cent while units saw a slight increase of 0.52 per cent. However, yearly growth was more positive, with all dwellings increasing by 2.45 per cent (2.36 per cent for
houses and 3.61 per cent for units). The median home value for all dwellings is $479,756.
Despite the surge in prices, the market shows signs of stability. Increased housing supply, strong population growth, and high demand have kept prices climbing, though at a slower pace. Experts suggest that while home prices may continue to rise, the growth rate is expected to

SANCTUARY Park estate in Kialla continues to attract those looking to build, thanks to its scenic walking and cycling tracks and proximity to schools and parklands. The latest stage, the Bolzonello Release, offers over 45 titled blocks ready for immediate construction.
The Bolzonello Release stands out due to its deep connection with the local Italian community. In 1980, Lino and Iolanda Bolzonello transformed an 11-acre property on Marlboro Drive, Kialla, into a self-sustaining paradise with animals, a vegetable garden, a small orchard and a miniature vineyard. Following Lino’s passing in 2009, Iolanda and their daughter Louise have worked to honour his memory and celebrate the Italian heritage he brought to Australia and Sanctuary Park.
Civil works on the Bolzonello Release began in 2022, and titled land ranging from 719m² to 935m² is now available. The area features tree-lined streets, picturesque views, and a network of parklands with a
two-meter-wide walking and bicycle path connecting Sanctuary Drive to Archer Road and Melbourne Road.
Rocky Gagliardi, director of Gagliardi Scott Real Estate, emphasised the urgency of acting now. He said, “Waiting could mean paying $25,000 or more extra for land. In the next three years, prices will rise, and blocks under $300,000 will be scarce.” With titled land readily available and builders offering incentives, now is the perfect time to buy. Don’t miss this unique opportunity before the market shifts.

Tiny homes still taking the world by storm
THE craze around tiny homes began gaining momentum in the early 2000s, influenced by rising housing costs, a growing interest in sustainable living, and the desire for a simpler, more minimalistic lifestyle. In Australia, growing plants during winter prevents them from bolting to seed as quickly as they would in summer, allowing

Rental market eases in regional Victoria
The rental market in Regional Victoria is showing signs of relief, according to the latest PropTrack report. National rental vacancy rates increased to 1.30 per cent in May, the highest since July 2023, marking the third consecutive month of rising vacancy rates.
This increase in vacancy rates indicates easing conditions for renters, though rental availability remains very low, leading to strong competition and continued rent increases.
Regional markets saw a modest rise in vacancy rates. Greater Shepparton’s vacancy rate for May was 1.1 per cent, with a quarterly change of 0.06 per cent and a yearly change
of 0.47 per cent. While renters still face challenging conditions, the slight improvement in May offers a glimmer of hope. Overall, the rental market in regional Victoria is gradually easing, providing some much-needed relief for renters despite the ongoing competition for available properties.
Transforming a Tatura treasure
By Deanne JeffersSTEPH Said and Brodie Nightingale, a young couple from Shepparton, took a leap of faith a year ago by purchasing a charming 107-year-old weatherboard home in Tatura. They both grew up in older houses, so it was a given that they wanted to find something of a similar style for themselves.
To save for the house deposit, Brodie spent three and a half years working away during the pandemic. They also spent a year house-sitting, which helped reduce costs and generate additional income for their home purchase. This experience introduced them to Tatura, a small but growing town that quickly captured their hearts.
"Growing up in Shepparton, we were surprised by Tatura. It’s a really relaxed town with good people, and everything we need is within walking distance," said Brodie.
"We like to think we got in before the big Tatura boom," added Steph. "It’s a quiet town, but that might be the white noise from the Tatura Milk factories."
The house, built in 1916 during the World War I steel shortage, has unique features such as hardwood flooring bound together from green-milled timber without nails. Over the years, the house has undergone various renovations, including a 1960s lean-to
extension and updates to the kitchen and bathroom.
Living in an old home has been a journey of discovery. One surprise was finding a grease trap, and after moving in, they discovered the house was completely blocked up.
Growing up in Shepparton, we were surprised by Tatura. It’s a really relaxed town with good people, and everything we need is within walking distance
Steph and Brodie plan to renovate the home over time. It needs restumping and roof raising, but their current focus is on improving the large yard.
Brodie Nightingale
"It was perfect for a first homebuyer," Steph said. "It was ready to move in, and we look forward to putting our own stamp on it in the future."
From house-sitters to homeowners, they have had to purchase new furniture and supplies. They also saw costs dramatically increase during and after COVID. Despite
Planning for a better Victoria
THE Allan Labor Government kicked off conversations with communities across the state at the end of last year to develop a new plan for what our cities, towns and regions should look like in the coming decades as we get on with building thousands of new homes Victoria needs. This will be the first-ever whole-of-state plan, setting out how to further improve housing affordability and choice through to 2050 as the population grows to exceed 10 million, establishing targets for local government areas for where and how many homes need to be built.
“Building on our landmark Housing Statement – a new plan for Victoria will set out what our towns, cities and regions look like as we get on with building 800,000 new homes over the next decade and millions more into the 2050s,” said Minister for Planning, Sonya Kilkenny.
It will focus on initiatives across five pillars that will enable a

Brodie is also creating a 'man cave' in the shed.
"We like to do most things ourselves,"
Brodie said. "There are a lot of hidden costs, though. Even the price of purchasing tools to do 70 per cent of the work yourself is pretty pricey. We will get there, though."
"A lot of houses in the street are renovating as well, which inspires you and makes you think about what’s possible, and what you can do next to make your place better, more liveable, and cosy," said Brodie.

Victoria is growing. With the population set to hit 10.3 million by 2051. To ease the housing pressure Victorians are facing, we need to build 2.24 million homes in that time, including a target of 425,600 across regional and rural Victoria.

Winter tips for managing Queensland Fruit Fly
WINTER may seem like a time to relax for fruit growers, but the Goulburn Murray Valley Fruit Fly Area Wide Management Program continues to educate the community, industry, and government on controlling Queensland fruit fly (Qfly). With workshops and community engagements, the program aims to reduce Qfly populations before spring.
Program coordinator Ross Abberfield emphasises that not all fruit flies die in winter. Many adult flies survive by taking refuge in evergreen plants near homes and buildings where temperatures are milder. One significant contribution to their survival is the unmanaged leftover fruit on late fruiting plants. Abberfield advises post-harvest fruit removal to reduce orchard diseases and control other pests.
Managing Qfly through winter
Fruit Fly researcher Andrew Jessup highlights that adult flies are the main concern during winter as eggs and larvae usually die off by June. He recommends using food-based traps and baits, especially during warmer parts of the day, to control any active adult flies seeking food. Proper
management now can prevent a large Qfly population later.
Removing unwanted fruit trees
Home gardeners and commercial growers should focus on removing unwanted and unmanaged fruit trees. This includes checking for fruiting weeds, hedge plants, and trees with late-hanging fruit. Community support has already led to the removal of over 115,000 unwanted fruit trees. If you see unwanted plants or rogue trees, report them to your local Council for removal.
Advice to home gardeners and commercial growers
Winter trapping with protein-based traps in sunny spots of evergreen trees is also effective. Lemon trees are particularly favoured by Qfly for nesting. For residents
in Greater Shepparton, Moira Shire, Campaspe Shire, or Strathbogie Shire, free removal of unwanted fruit trees is available through the program.
Steps for Home Gardeners and Growers:
• Remove Unwanted Trees: Identify and remove unmanaged fruit trees and weeds.
• Use Protein-Based Traps: Place traps in warm, sunny spots in evergreen trees.
• Regular Maintenance: Continuously pick up fallen fruit and harvest late-hanging fruit.
• Report Rogue Trees: Inform local Council about unwanted trees for removal.
For more information and tips, visit www.fruitflycontrol. com or email fruitflycontrol@shepparton.vic.gov.au. Stay proactive this winter to ensure a fruit fly-free spring!

Healthcare cuts and amalgamations to have a devastating effect on regional Victoria
DEPUTY Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Mental Health, Emma Kealy, said regional Victorians continue to be snubbed and deserved to learn full details of looming cuts and mergers.
“No more secrets. It is time for Labor to fully detail how these cuts will impact services and regional Victorians,” Ms Kealy said.
“The Allan Labor Government has admitted it will cut funding to at least 20 of Victoria’s health services. How is it possible for them to serve their communities?”
In Mansfield, there is genuine concern for what will happen to their hospital if it is forcibly merged with Shepparton. Mansfield mayor Cr Steve Rabie said Mansfield had a strong history of fighting amalgamations.
“Leaked documents reveal that there is a threat that we would lose our chief executive and local board and have them replaced by
an advisory board that sits out in Shepparton, making decisions about our services,” said Cr Rabie last month.
“This merger, shrouded in secrecy, has our community bewildered. In rural areas, such as in the Grampians, hospital mergers have been tried and have failed.
“In the year 2002, our own local government de-amalgamated after a disastrous merger in 1994. We’ve ‘been there, done that’ and we know that our community thrives independently.”
Despite the tireless work of GVH, they already feel the strain due to a lack of resources beyond their control, with the state budget biting down upon all health services, taking away from one regional centre like GVH to oversee greater areas as far as Mansfield will only bleed the people on the ground and the healthcare they provide locally.
$3M boost for Shepparton infrastructure
SHEPPARTON will receive millions of dollars in State Government funding for major upgrades, including the Shepparton Sports Stadium and VISY Stadium. The Victorian Government’s $25M Council Support Package includes a $3M allocation for Greater Shepparton, facilitating the most significant upgrades to the Shepparton Sports Stadium in over 30 years.
Planned improvements for the Shepparton Sports Stadium include roof enhancements, facade and external signage upgrades, as well as updated change spaces and accessibility features to better serve major events and community competitions. VISY Community Stadium will also benefit from extensive renovations, including roof, kitchen, and foyer upgrades, the construction and fit-out of gender-inclusive and accessible multi-use change rooms, mezzanine facility upgrades, enhanced sporting equipment, safety improvements for indoor courts, and updated court line-markings for basketball and badminton.
Greater Shepparton City Council mayor, councillor Shane Sali emphasised the importance of these upgrades, particularly in terms of accessibility and usability for local competitions and events. He noted that the facilities must be maintained and improved as much as possible with the available funding, while still aiming for a larger redevelopment in the future. The improvements to VISY Stadium, in particular, promise immediate benefits, addressing current limitations that restrict its full utilisation.
Additional enhancements will be made to the Shepparton Sports City precinct to improve user safety and connectivity. This includes constructing connecting footpaths throughout the precinct, additional tree planting, and landscaping to improve the area’s appearance and functionality. Enhancements to footpaths will ensure accessible routes between the BMX facility, the velodrome, and other sports facilities.
Moreover, the Yahna Gurtji Shared Path will be expanded between Gemmill’s Swamp and KidsTown, improving connectivity for Mooroopna.
The Council Support Package is part of the State Government’s Regional Investment Package, designed to support local government organisations in implementing projects that will create outcomes that may have been generated by hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Hames in regional Victoria. The $3M boost is under the Hub Cities Stream 1 Council Support Package.
Regional Development Minister Gayle Tierney expressed pride in supporting numerous projects across rural and regional Victoria, emphasising their potential to create better public spaces, stimulate economic activity, and provide improved outcomes for both visitors and locals.
All projects are set to be completed by June 30, 2026, promising lasting benefits for Greater Shepparton’s community and enhancing the region’s sports and recreational infrastructure. For more details, visit rdv.vic.gov.au/councilsupportpackage.

From salinity to sustainability Shepparton Irrigation Region
THE Shepparton Irrigation Region (SIR) is famous as one of Australia’s largest food bowls.
The region’s Land and Water Management Plan (SIRLWMP) has been a cornerstone in ensuring sustainable agricultural practices while protecting the natural environment.
More than three decades since its inception, the plan has been renewed to address contemporary environmental challenges and future-proof the region’s agriculture.
The original plan was developed in response to the pressing issues of salinity and waterlogging, which posed serious threats to the region’s productivity and environmental health.
charts a resilient course
The updated plan, SIRLWMP 2050, aims to build on past successes and steer the region towards a resilient and sustainable future.
The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA) is at the helm of the renewal process, with the Shepparton Irrigation Region People and Planning Integration Committee (SIRPPIC) overseeing the plan’s development and implementation.
The GBCMA’s Carl Walters said the collaborative approach underscored the importance of community, stakeholder and government partnership in managing natural resources effectively.
“The SIRLWMP 2050 focuses on integrated management to
balance environmental, social, and productive needs,” Mr Walters said. “It emphasises the importance of water quality, biodiversity, land health, and the sustainable development of the irrigation industry.”
He said public feedback was a crucial component of the renewal process because those directly impacted by the plan needed to be heard and considered.
The final document will be submitted to the GBCMA Board for approval and subsequently to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action for endorsement. For more information, go to, https://engage.vic.gov.au/sirlwmp

Football previews R11
SHEPPARTON V MOOROOPNA
Shepparton will be looking to bounce back after it was handed a football lesson by reigning premier Echuca last round. The 70-point loss was the Bears’ first of 2024 and it relegated them to second place on the ladder. Mooroopna continue to win when the odds are against it. The Cats probably went in as underdogs against Euroa, but they are easily one of the best coached teams under John Lamont. And, I have no doubt that makes a big difference as he instils a belief in the group that they can win anywhere and anytime.
If they can continue their strong form of recent weeks, then the Saints will feel confident it can defeat the Bulldogs despite what the likes of Ethan Penrith, Tim Wilson, Mitchell Elliott, Curtis Ryan and Jhdara Jones can throw up. Tip: Benalla
ECHUCA V KYABRAM
Keelin Betson, Angus Hanrahan (good in the win over United as well), Dom Gugliotti, Kobie Issell and Bryce Rutherford were important in the win over the Magpies. A big boost for the Cats is the return of key forward Daniel Johnstone. He missed last week’s win due to a one-game suspension. A worrying sign for the Cats is that they only won one quarter against Euroa but it was enough to get the win. Bryce Stephenson, Jacob Watts, Ashley Holland, Xavier Stevenson and Joel Brett will be charged with leading the way to ensure that loss can be rectified against the Cats. The Bears were well beaten by the Murray Bombers last round, but in a positive they did win the second quarter. Traditionally these teams have played some tight affairs and this should be no different. I am going with the Bears to bounce back from last week’s defeat and get the chocolates. Tip: Shepparton.
SEYMOUR V MANSFIELD
Kyabram will welcome the challenge of taking on the reigning premier in a rematch of the 2023 grand-final. The Bombers have been in some solid form over the past fortnight. They lost by less than 3 kicks against Shepparton and accounted for the Saints by 50 points at home last round. Joshua Dillon, Will Golds, Jackson Griffiths, Bailey Tome, Liam Ogden, Anthony DePasquale and William Wild were important in that win. They will need to continue that good form while the Bombers will look to get a contribution from everyone who takes the field to be a genuine chance of defeating the Murray Bombers. Echuca made a big statement in the top of the table battle last round despite missing half-adozen regulars. They handed the previously undefeated Shepparton a 70-point football lesson. Riley Smith, Will Monahan, Jack McHale, Jack Evans, and Kane Morris were outstanding in the win that saw the reigning premier have 10 different goalkickers. I think the Bombers will give a strong account of themselves, but I don’t think they will be able to go the distance. Tip: Echuca
EUROA V SHEPPARTON UNITED
This will be an intriguing match-up. Seymour chalked up its second win of the season at Deakin Reserve last round while the Eagles slipped up at home to the red-hot Rochester Tigers. The Lions had one of its best four quarters for the season in accounting for Shepparton United. Coach Ben Davey will be hoping this win can launch them in to making a charge up the ladder. Tom Maloney, Cooper Holdsworth-Rose, Nathan Beattie, Riley Mason, Nathan Fowler and Lewis Lubeck (5 goals) were important for the Lions in the comfortable 32-point win over the Demons. They will be important as the Lions look to replicate their last home game where it just fell short against the Tigers. Jayden Howes, Brett Mahoney, Riley Northcott, Tom Dunstan and Cody George were the Eagles’ best in the 40-point loss to Rochester. Kicking goals was a problem last round at home against Rochester. And the Eagles will need to rectify it and produce a similar effort in front of goals to a fortnight ago at Euroa where it kicked straight to defeat the Pies on the road. This is a game that the Eagles can ill-afford to drop as Euroa is hot on its heels and looking to pounce on any slip ups. I think the Eagles have got too much to play for and therefore should win what I expect to be a tight contest at Kings Park, Seymour. Tip: Mansfield.
BENALLA
V TATURA
This is a great opportunity for both these teams, especially the visitors who haven’t won since the opening day of the season. Benalla won in round 9 at home against the Swans. That win lifted the Saints off the bottom of the ladder. A win against the Bulldogs will go a long way to the Saints avoiding the wooden spoon as it would send them six points clear of the visitors. Nick Mellington, Mark Marriott, Nicholas Brazil, Sam Begley and Wade King will be important as will the coach Jarrod Waite.
Euroa will be desperate to avoid a third straight defeat in a row and get the win to put their top six aspirations back on course. Shepparton United will be no easy feat for the home team. The Demons have shown patches of what they are capable of when they are on, but it is the lapses which is what has hurt them. Declan Newbound, Fraser Hicks, Kale Gibson, Sheldon Bogdan and Samuel McInneny were the standouts in the loss to Lions. They will be looking to continue their form to try and lead the Demons to a second win of 2024. Will Hayes, Ryan Pendlebury, Jayden Gleeson, Andrew Bell, Lachlan Hill and Jett Trotter will be important for the Magpies. If they can continue their good form, then they should get the win to stay in touch with the top six. Tip: Euroa.
ROCHESTER V SHEPPARTON SWANS
Rochester will be looking to continue its red-hot form that has seen them climb up to third place on the ladder. The Tigers are shooting for an eighth consecutive win while the Swans are looking for two wins on the bounce to continue their push up the ladder.
Dylan Gordon, Mitchell Trewhella, Matt Kellett, Mitchell Bright and Hamish Heine were important as the Tigers won two quarters at Mansfield but still managed to finish 40 points in front at the final siren. Mark Kovacevic, Will Dwyer, Zac Clohesy, Max Clohesy and Steele Simpson were the key contributors in the Swans big win over the Bulldogs. They had 12 different goalkickers which will make them a little unpredictable but it is very hard to go past the form of the Tigers. They have claimed some big scalps and coach Ash Watson will be demanding that his players don’t drop the ball and get complacent against the visiting Swans. I think the Tigers are playing some really good football which should be enough to get the win over the Swans. Tip: Rochester.

THE BIG TALKING POINTS AND QUESTIONS OUT OF ROUND 14
LACHLAN GELEIT
Round 14 taught us plenty about the AFL.
As we’re in the thick of the bye rounds, six teams sat out, but we still had plenty of interesting action.
The round had huge individual performances, milestone games, top-eight shaping results, ridiculous comebacks and more!
With that in mind, here’s what we learned from the weekend’s footy.
Sydney has a gear that no other team can go with at the moment We all know Sydney is the best team in it, but it’s quickly becoming by some margin.
In Saturday’s 67-109 win over Adelaide, the Swans were genuinely challenged and even trailed 60-44 with 5:45 remaining in the third term.
With 0:41 remaining in the clock in that exact same quarter, the scoreline read 60-81 in the Swans’ favour.
Simply put, Sydney’s ability to punish the opposition when they have momentum is far superior to any team in the comp right now.
Whether it’s their elite running, ball use or stoppage prowess, the Swans can get you in a raft of different ways and really get going whenever they feel like turning the screws.
We’re a long way out until this year’s Grand Final on Saturday, September 28 - 104 days to be precise.
But it would be a HUGE shock if the Swans aren’t lining up on the MCG that afternoon on current form. What a side.
Never count Collingwood out
We’ve known this the entire time Collingwood has been coached by Craig McRae, but you really cannot count this Magpies team out ever.
Down by 54 early in the third term on Sunday against North Melbourne, it honestly looked like this was finally a bridge too far for a Collingwood side that looked like its injury woes had caught up to them.
Well, enter the likes of Nick Daicos, Jack Crisp, Bobby Hill, Jeremy Howe and Lachie Schultz who simply refused to let their side lose.
Collingwood’s ability to score quickly is a sight to behold and it’s the belief that they have that carried them to a flag last year that just lives
inside every single player that puts on the black and white.
Even though it was only against North Melbourne, the Roos have some genuine talent and were kicking goals from just about Southern Cross Station all day until things tightened up late.
Those late moments were where Collingwood shined and ultimately, North faltered.
It also goes into the history books as the equal-seventh biggest comeback victory in V/AFL history. Hats off to them.
He may have missed some opportunities on Saturday, but Nick Watson is going to be a player
Hawthorn draftee Nick Watson
copped some heat for his performance on Saturday against Richmond as he kicked 1.4 including some bad set shot misses.
While there’s no doubt he has to clean up that part of his game, it’s impressive that such a young player is even getting that many scoring opportunities, and the finishing will no doubt come.
It’s obvious that the kid has talent, there’s no way a club like Hawthorn would be willing to take a player that stands at just 5’6 with pick No. 5 in the Draft if he didn’t have star potential and you feel like his breakout game is going to come very soon.
While he didn’t have the scoreboard impact he could have in the win against Richmond, he finished with eight score involvements and a goal assist to boot.
Once his accuracy tightens up, watch out.
There’s no doubt he’s going to be a player as the Hawks quietly build towards an unlikely finals appearance.
Rory Lobb is becoming a valuable asset again
Western Bulldogs tall Rory Lobb enjoyed by far his best game of the season on Saturday against his former club Fremantle.
The forward/ruck finished with three goals, 19 disposals, 11 score involvements, six marks and three tackles which is just about as good a return as you can hope for in that role.
It was a great response from the 31-year-old who was subbed out of last week’s game against Brisbane with just five touches to his
name.
While there’s no doubt he’s still too inconsistent, Lobb proved on Saturday that the ceiling is still there for him to be a quality AFL player and while he may be pushed out of the Bulldogs’ side once Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy return, a player capable of that performance could be of huge value to another club.
If he does seek a move at season’s end, more performances like that will ensure that he’ll have plenty of options at his disposal and the Bulldogs will be able to get something of real value in return.
It’s a big week for Geelong After starting the season 7-0, Geelong are now 8-5 and don’t look the side we all thought they were.
While they had the bye in Round 14, their next clash is huge in the context of their season as they face Carlton in a huge Friday night MCG blockbuster.
The week off probably gave their senior heads some much-needed rest, and they face a true test against a top-four side in the Blues on the big stage.
While they took care of the Blues last time they faced them, things have changed a LOT since Round 7 and they’re going to need to win here to prove to us that they’re a genuine challenger.
If they fall short, it’ll be proof that their early season form was a false dawn and that this side is destined to probably play finals, but not really contend for the flag.
Over to you, Chris Scott and team.
