National para champions prepare to take on the world

SUPPORT PARA-ATHLETES...

THE chance to compete on the national and international stage is a dream shared by athletes. Years of dedication and training for the opportunity to stand at the start line, grace the field or enter an arena and face off against other competitors can appear to be the toughest challenge they face. But for many athletes, especially for those who aren’t front and centre of the spotlight, finding the resources to make it to big events is where the biggest challenge begins.

This challenge faced five Koryo Taekwondo Centre Shepparton’s (KTCS) para-athletes who competed in the 2024 Para-Taekwondo National Championships last week. The competitors had an incredible tournament, with all five bringing home a medal. Damon Vasterink won gold and Dom Barlow bronze in their event. Mohamad Al Zuraijawi, Brodie Fitzgerald and Jazabelle

Murraylee also won gold medals on the day.

While the KTCS athletes should proudly celebrate this wonderful achievement, for Damon and Dom the World Para Taekwondo Poomsae Championships await them at the end of the month in Bahrain, November 26 and 27.

To help get Dom and Damon, along with trainers Sammy Rachele and Gus Thiel, to the Persian Gulf to compete on the world stage, KTSC is calling on the local community to help support them with a donation. KTCS has set up a taxdeductible donation fund to help with travel, accommodation, and competition costs.

ARCADIA HATCHERY EXPANSION

Work has begun to triple the size of the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery, backed by a $15M investment from the State Government. The works will increase the number of production ponds from 33 to 100, enabling the hatchery to produce up to 6M Murray cod and golden

perch each year for stocking into Victorian waters. The facility will play a key role in Victoria stocking 10M fish annually – more than every other Australian state and territory combined. The project will be completed in 2025, providing enough time for the fish to get acclimatised to their new surroundings ahead of the following fishing season.

CALLS FOR NEW PUMPER FIRE TRUCK

Wendy Lovell, Member for Northern Victoria, has said Fire Rescue Victoria must confirm when the new pumper platform fire truck will be delivered to Fire Station 75 in Shepparton, after news that the United Firefighters Union has not supported FRV’s plan to redirect the truck to Sunshine.

FRV representatives visited Shepparton in September to advise local crews that they were intending to redirect the pumper platform allocated to Shepparton to Sunshine. The process for FRV to reallocate resources requires FRV to obtain the endorsement of the UFU.

But a letter from UFU secretary Peter Marshall to FRV assistant chief fire officer Craig Brownlie has confirmed that the Union will not approve the transfer and insists that the truck be deployed to Shepparton.

The UFU’s insistence that the truck be deployed to Shepparton is good news for the community and firefighters at Fire Station 75, as the new fire truck will boost the firefighting capabilities of the brigade.

Greater Shepparton has numerous large facilities, and a growing number of tall buildings, that require a pumper with a high aerial platform to fight fires and perform rescues at height. The Pumper Platform will also support firefighting operations across northeastern Victoria.

“FRV must confirm exactly when the Pumper Platform will be delivered to Fire Station 75 and go into operation, and it must arrive as soon as possible,” said Ms Lovell. “This new Pumper Platform is vitally important for future fire safety and rescue in Shepparton and throughout the north-east.”

INJECTING ROOMS

One of the leading campaigners behind the opening of a medically supervised injecting room in Richmond hopes to inspire community activism in the Shepparton region.

Judy Ryan will lead a panel discussion from 5.30pm - 7pm on Thursday, November 14, hosted by the Shepparton Library.

Ms Ryan will be joined on the panel by local experts to talk about the alcohol and drug situation:

• Maria Hutchison, trauma practitioner & former CEO of The Cottage

• Professor Edward Ogden PSM, addiction medicine specialist at Goulburn Valley Health

• Associate Professor Bernadette Ward from Monash University’s Rural Health Office. ABC Radio presenter, Nic Healey, will be the moderator for the evening.

INTEREST RATES KEPT ON HOLD

At its meeting on Tuesday last week, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) board decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 4.35 per cent and the interest rate paid on Exchange Settlement balances unchanged at 4.25 per cent. While inflation is falling, the central bank says it remains too high, and rates need to remain “sufficiently restrictive”. The RBA will hold its final meeting of the year in December, but economists expect rate cuts will not occur until the first half of 2025.

A COLOURFUL ADDITION TO THE MOOVING ART HERD

Goulburn Valley Pride and members of the Greater Shepparton City Council’s LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee were excited to see the unveiling of a Pride Cow to join the Mooving Art herd on Thursday, November 7. The creation and introduction of a pride cow was part of the LGBTIQA+ Action Plan developed in collaboration with community representatives and endorsed by Greater Shepparton City Council.

The design and painting of the cow was a collaborative work by local artist Ruby WyattCarter incorporating elements of the many Pride flags with the symbolism of peacock feathers. The unveiling of the cow coincided with the raising of the permanent rainbow flag at Eastbank and the launch of this year’s OUTintheOPEN festival. This year’s festival theme was “Colour My World”, which rang true to all those who witnessed the unveiling of the cow and raising of the flag.

Children charged over deliberate fires

THREE children have been charged after allegedly lighting fires in the Shepparton area last week. Emergency services responded to reports of a fire near Broken River Drive on November 4 at about 6pm. The blaze was contained, and no one was injured.

The following day, emergency services again responded to reports of multiple fires along the Broken River in the Shepparton and Kialla areas on November 5, about 3.30pm.

The fire was contained by Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), and it is alleged that around eight acres of land was burnt. Three offenders were allegedly observed leaving the scene and police located and arrested them shortly afterwards.

A 14-year-old Mooroopna boy, a 13-year-old Shepparton girl and a 12-year-old Shepparton boy were charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a bushfire. They will appear at a children’s court at a later date.

Deliberately or recklessly causing a fire are enforceable crimes with hefty penalties. Police will investigate and take action to catch those responsible when a fire is deemed suspicious. Anyone found guilty of recklessly or intentionally causing a bushfire faces a penalty of up to 15 years imprisonment.

Lighting a fire on a total fire ban day can attract a fine of up to $46,000 or up to two years in jail.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnesses concerning behaviour in relation to fires, or anyone who has been told about this behaviour taking place.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious or reckless behaviour as it is occurring should call Triple Zero (000) and anyone with other information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au

State Government increase probate fees

IN what has been labelled ‘death tax by stealth,’ the State Government announced on the eve of the Melbourne Cup that it will push ahead with an increase in probate fees as of Monday, November 18, 2024. This latest price hike means bereaved Victorians will now pay up to 645 per cent more to have their loved one's estates settled.

There is a reprieve for estates under $250,000 with fees waived by the Government. For estates over $250,000, a tiered system of fees begins at $514.40 and trends upwards to over $16,000 for estates of $7,000,000 and above.

In June this year, Premier Jacinta Allan tried to calm down speculation from the opposition

when she addressed reporters.

"There's a bit of fearmongering and scaremongering and, frankly, just ridiculous commentary that's coming from the Liberal opposition on this today," said Ms Allan.

"We have the lowest fees of anywhere in the country.

"We're looking at how we can continue to support people through this process."

For the higher-end estates, this increase will mean some Victorians will pay more than double the maximum fee charged in NSW.

“The cost of living is going up under the Allan Labor Government, and now death taxes by stealth are making the cost of dying more

expensive through massive fee increases,” said Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell.

Ms Lovell also expressed her concerns for Greater Shepparton residents faced with burying a loved one, when on the same day Remembrance Parks Central Victoria, which manages cemeteries at Pine Lodge and Kialla West, announced a price review that proposes increases of hundreds of dollars to both the cost of a plot and the digging of a grave.

“There will be a double whammy on the cost of dying for residents of Greater Shepparton, as probate fees jump by up to 645 per cent, and the cost of a plot and burial is proposed to increase by hundreds of dollars,” said Ms Lovell.

The acting attorney general, Enver Erdogan defended the decision when he announced it on Monday, November 4.

There will be a double whammy on the cost of dying for residents of Greater Shepparton, as probate fees jump by up to 645 per cent Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell

New South Wales and South Australia’s fees,” he said.

“For the very small percentage of Victorians dealing with multimillion-dollar estates, the fees will be lifted to cover the level of administration and dispute resolution these complex applications often require in court.”

“It’s why we’re making the system fairer by abolishing probate fees for small estates and keeping medium-sized estate fees cheaper than

Though there is never a good time to die, with the cost-of-living crisis continuing to cripple families, in Victoria it appears death is no longer an escape from filling government coffers.

Speaking in Parliament, Birrell backed a Coalition proposal introducing tougher deterrents against market abuse, including higher fines and the possibility of asset divestiture for supermarkets that misuse their dominance. The proposed policy would also establish a supermarket commissioner, giving farmers an impartial advocate to handle grievances.

Emphasising the balance between affordable prices for consumers and sustainability for suppliers, Birrell highlighted the importance of this measure for agricultural hubs like the Goulburn Valley, which are major contributors to Australia’s food production.

“We do need the supermarkets. They provide a service, they provide a way for

“We need them to be profitable, but we need them to be fair and we need them to provide sustainability for their suppliers. We also need competition amongst supermarkets to make sure we get that balance we are looking for in this policy.

“I hope those divestiture powers are never used, but I also hope, and I believe, that the supermarkets will look at those enhanced powers, the higher fines and divestiture powers, and say, ‘We’d better not test this out because we don’t want to fall foul of what that might mean for us.’”

“The most important thing for Australian people is to have cheap, reliable and sustainably produced food, and I include business sustainability along with environmental sustainability in that. Policies that attack agriculture do not provide a sustainable supply chain for food in this country,” Birrell said.

Government incentives for home buyers and builders in Victoria

MORE than offering financial security and emotional wellbeing, home ownership is a cornerstone of a strong and thriving community. However, while the current housing landscape is fraught with challenges that impede first home buyers and builders from entering the market, there are a range of both state and federal government incentives designed to offer support.

From grants for first-time purchasers to tax benefits for investors, the initiatives listed below not only intend to make homeownership more attainable but aim to stimulate the construction industry itself.

In a space to watch: Premier Jacinta Allan recently announced that her Labor Government intends to make it easier for Victorians to divide their blocks to build more homes across every corner of the state. The announcement was made at a recent press conference, with the Premier stating, “This just makes sense: if you’ve got land you don’t need – we’ll make it easier for you to subdivide it and sell it, putting money back in your pocket and giving another Victorian the chance to buy their own home.”

All the right moves to painting your home this spring and summer

AS the days get longer and the weather warms up, there’s no better time to refresh your home with a fresh coat of paint. Whether you’re looking to update your living room, revamp your backyard fence, or give your home’s exterior a facelift, Crowies Paints Shepparton is here to help you get the job done right with the following expert tips and advice.

1. Choose lighter, airy colours

Tip: Spring and summer are the perfect times to opt for lighter, more refreshing colours like soft pastels, cool blues, or light neutrals for both interior and exterior painting.

Why: Lighter colours can make a space feel open and breezy, which is especially beneficial as the weather warms up. For exteriors, soft hues can also reflect heat, keeping your home cooler, while still providing a fresh, clean look.

2. Work with the weather

Tip: Plan your outdoor painting projects around dry, mild weather. Avoid painting when it’s too hot or too humid, as these conditions can affect how the paint adheres and dries.

Why: Spring and summer are ideal for

outdoor painting, but you need to ensure that the temperature is in the right range—usually between 10°C and 29°C for most paints. High humidity can cause paint to take longer to dry, while too much heat can cause it to dry too quickly, leading to poor coverage.

3. Prep the surfaces thoroughly Tip: Take time to clean and prep the surfaces before painting—whether it’s cleaning dirt and grime from exterior walls or filling cracks and sanding interior walls.

Why: Proper surface preparation ensures better paint adhesion and durability. For exteriors, washing the surfaces to remove dirt, mildew, and chalky residue will help the paint bond better. For interiors, filling holes or

imperfections and sanding rough areas will result in a smoother finish.

4. Use outdoor-specific paint for exteriors

Tip: Choose high-quality exterior paints, like Wattyl Solagard, that are designed for outdoor conditions, including UV protection, moisture resistance, and mildew prevention.

Why: Exterior paints are formulated to withstand the elements, including sun, rain, and wind. They’re typically more durable and weather-resistant than interior paints, ensuring that your home maintains its fresh look longer.

Be sure to pick a finish that suits your needs— matt or low sheen finishes can be great for hiding imperfections, while gloss finishes are easier to clean and maintain.

5. Take advantage of longer daylight hours

Tip: Plan your painting tasks during the extended daylight hours to make the most of the natural light, especially if you’re painting the exterior of your home.

Why: With the longer days of spring and summer, you have more time to complete larger painting projects. Take advantage of the extended daylight for touch-ups or to finish jobs before nightfall. Just be mindful of temperature changes as the sun sets to avoid applying paint in conditions that could affect the finish.

Now is the time to get your foot in the front door

The spring real estate market has finally hit its straps during the month of October after a slow start to spring, with an increase in property listings hitting the market and new buyer inquiries increasing in recent months. Across both our Shepparton and Numurkah offices, Gagliardi Scott Real Estate has listed a whopping 120 new properties since spring across the residential, farming, and land sectors!

Buyer confidence is on the rise, with (hopefully) an interest rate cut predicted in the first quarter of 2025 and a dip in the inflation rate. We have noticed first home buyers and investors coming back into our local market, which is a great indicator of confidence for our local market. Our median house price in Shepparton is $455,000, which has held strong for the last 12-18 months during the consecutive interest rate rises, while days on market are sitting at approximately 60 days.

As the major residential selling agency, land sales have really ramped up since spring, now consistently selling anywhere between 8-12 blocks a month. We service the popular North Shepparton precinct, including The North Quarter Estate, The Vines Estate, and the newly released Providence Place Estate, to Kialla, including Sevens Creek Estate, Sanctuary Park Estate and Emerald Bank Estate. Gagliardi Scott Real Estate caters to various budgets, land sizes, locations and preferences.

It’s vitally important that anyone planning to build in the

not financially ready to build, you will have time before the block is titled, or can simply settle the land and build when you are ready. This is your chance to get your foot in the door.

BUYER CONFIDENCE IS ON THE RISE... According to the expert team at Gagliardi Scott Real Estate, an interest rate cut is on the horizon, while an uptick in first home buyers and a return of investors in the local market indicate increasing buyer confidence. Greater Shepparton welcomes its nine councillors

CURRENT deputy mayor Sam Spinks ran unopposed in the Poplar Ward. In her time on Council, Sam sees housing, worker and skills shortages, public transport and the cost of living as the big issues facing the community.

“I have a passion for social justice and community development, and I hope to focus on doing the little things well with care and transparency, on making sure each of our community members feels heard and seen, and on creating a Greater Shepparton that is the most accessible and inclusive it can possibly be,” said Cr Spinks.

Anthony Brophy attracted the most votes in the Kialla Ward, which was the closest of all the results. Anthony highlighted the need for transport improvements, be that road upgrades, public buses and train service to Melbourne, and securing the region’s water as top priorities.

“There is much that needs attention in Greater Shepparton, and I have the experience, the leadership and vision for what is needed not only in Kialla but across Greater Shepparton,” said Cr Brophy.

Fern Summer will be the longest current sitting member of Council after being voted in, in the Yanha Gurtji ward. Fern believes Council must promote the region’s strengths, keep pace with investment, infrastructure, and growth; and stay out of social issues.

“After 12 years on the job, it feels like we are only getting started.

THE PERFECT STORM... A 2024 report highlights a severe labour shortage in Australia’s construction sector, needing 130,000 additional workers this year. The shortfall, worsened by high attrition rates, demands urgent government reforms to attract and retain skilled labour. The shortage impacts housing, with new home builds set to hit a decade-low, down 8.8 per cent, resulting in only 158,690 starts. Photo: Supplied

Delivering for the community is such a good feeling and we still have so much work to do,” said Cr Summer.

Five new faces were elected under the ward system.

Paul Wickham narrowly won the Goulburn River Ward. Paul is the owner of a family pharmacy and understands serving the needs of the Goulburn River community.

“Following the 2022 floods, it is clear that there is an opportunity to revisit the Greater Shepparton and Mooroopna 2050 Regional City Growth Plan to see how we can create a more resilient community to the west of the Goulburn River,” said Mr Wickham.

Geoff Akers is a local dairy farmer, which helped him secure the Pine Lodge Ward. Geoff has chaired Dairy Australia, Murray Dairy, the Victorian Farmers Federation Water Council and was a central councillor for the United Dairy Farmers of Victoria.

“I have been advocating to advance our region on the national and international stage for decades, and I will take these learnings and contacts to the council table,” said Mr Akers.

Kieron Eddy won the Lower Goulburn Ward. Local business owner Kieron saw GSCC as Shepparton-centric and feels many of the smaller communities outside of Shepparton are ignored.

“It's safe to say that practical real-world experience is what I would

bring to Council. The type of experience you can't get in a classroom and the type of common sense that comes from getting knocked down and picking yourself up repeatedly,” said Mr Eddy.

Steve Threlfall is a local businessman with long ties to the community that helped him win the McEwen Ward seat. Steve sees the region’s waterways as the top asset Council needs to embrace, showcase and protect the rivers, creeks and wetlands, and focus on local issues.

“Common sense is not that common at the council table. Woke agendas and a cancel culture is dividing people, not uniting them. I see it and are constantly being reminded of it by Greater Shepparton residents,” said Mr Threlfall.

Rod Schubert ran unopposed for the Midland Ward. The Tatura local emphasised the need for strong representation of rural communities, including the growing towns of Tatura, Merrigum, Harston and surrounding agricultural areas.

With over 42 years of business experience and a strong background in local government and community service, Rod is committed to providing dedicated representation for the Midland Ward.

The new councillors will meet on Tuesday, November 19 to elect the mayor and deputy mayor.

Workforce shortages and the housing crisis

A call for urgent action in Australia’s construction industry

A RECENT report has revealed a critical need for 130,000 additional workers this year to combat severe labour shortages in the construction sector. This shortfall, compounded by natural attrition, calls for immediate reforms from both federal and state governments to attract and retain skilled labour.

The report outlines a troubling trend placing the nation on track for the worst year in new home builds in over a decade, with an 8.8 per cent decline in new starts, totaling just 158,690. Detached house starts have dropped by 10.1 per

cent, while higher-density projects decreased by 6.0 per cent. Experts warn that if this pace continues, Australia could see fewer than 800,000 new home starts over the next five years, leading to a shortfall of over 400,000 homes against the National Housing Accord target.

The decline in apprenticeship numbers further compounds this crisis, with completions down 8.6 per cent and commencements down 11.8 per cent in the past year. It was emphasised that these low apprentice numbers reflect a broader shortage of skilled workers across all trades, warning that

without addressing these challenges, Australia will struggle to meet its housing demands.

As housing policy takes center stage ahead of the next state election in early 2025, the urgency for action is undeniable. The nation needs to drastically increase the supply of housing, but this cannot be achieved in the face of labour shortages. If these intertwined issues remain unaddressed, Australia risks deepening its housing crisis, with significant implications for economic stability and homeownership across the country.

Letters to the Editor

DELIVER OUR PROMISED FIRE TRUCK

Dear Editor, WHEN the Shepparton Fire Station was informed that they would be receiving a new pumper platform fire truck, and that it would be arriving within weeks, firefighters at the station undertook the required specialised training in anticipation of the arrival of the new truck.

However, it was a shock then for our firefighters to be told that Fire Rescue Victoria had reallocated the specialised fire truck to Sunshine.

The risk assessment conducted identified Shepparton as one of two of the highest risk areas most in need of the specialised pumper platform truck and I urged the Minister for Emergency Services, Jaclyn Symes to ensure that this truck be delivered to Shepparton.

The Victorian Branch Secretary from the United Fire Firefighters Union, Peter Marshall has not approved the transfer and insists that the truck be deployed back to Shepparton where it was promised.

It is critical that we have the resources that our region and firefighters need, and FRV must now confirm when the pumper platform truck will be delivered to Shepparton as first promised.

Sincerely,

Kim O’Keeffe MP

Member for Shepparton District

FINANCIAL INTERGRITY IN GOVERNMENT

Every Victorian deserves to know how, and where, their money is spent.

Integrity and transparency should be paramount, yet right now we are living through the wasteful, dishonest financial management of the Allan Labor Government.

The Nationals are making a stand with the freshly-released Our Plan For Financial

Integrity.

The plan is simple: We will manage your money better so we can deliver what really matters to you.

In a first for any state, we will deliver a Charter for Budget Honesty, ensuring every budget is transparent with clear, enforceable rules that hold the government accountable for every dollar spent.

We will also give you the power to track your money, and where it’s spent, in real time through what we are calling a Public Expenditure Tracker. It’s your money and it should be your right.

Another cornerstone is an Intergenerational Report, akin to a financial roadmap, released every five years so future generations aren’t burdened by the decisions of today.

We’ll take away the financial tricks and hidden costs.

You deserve it.

Peter Walsh MP Leader of The Nationals

UNLOCKING VICTORIA’S EXPORTS TO THE WORLD

Victoria is Australia’s leading exporter for food and fibre products, with sales representing more than a third of our state’s overall exports and supporting 330,000 jobs.

In 2022-23, Victoria’s food and fibre exports achieved a record $19.6B, up seven per cent from the previous year.

This is a real testament to our farmers, businesses and food manufacturers, who have all shown tremendous resilience to moderate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Victoria’s products are exported to key international markets, including China, Japan, the United States, New Zealand, Indonesia,

Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and India.

Demand for grain, meat, dairy, horticulture, prepared foods, seafood, wine, animal fibre and forest products are all helping drive this growth.

That is why Australia has a lot to offer as a trusted and reliable trade and investment partner.

Importantly, Federal Labor is helping Victoria unlock new opportunities that will deliver more exports and create more jobs.

When the Albanese Government was elected two and a half years ago, there was $20B worth of trade impediments with the Chinese government.

That meant producers of barley, cotton, oaten hay, coal, meat products, copper ores, wine and timber logs had effectively been blocked.

With one in four Australian export dollars coming from trade with China, Federal Labor set out to stabilise this relationship with our country’s largest trading partner.

Today, less than $500M of those impediments remain, largely thanks to the Albanese Government’s calm and strategic response led by Minister for Trade, Don Farrell.

In great news, Australia recently secured a timetable for the return of live rock lobster into China by the end of the year.

Just last week, Federal Labor strengthened agricultural ties with China by signing a letter of intent on cooperation to explore more efficient trade of organic goods exports.

Australia is also boosting exports in the Middle East, securing a landmark trade and investment agreement with the United Arab Emirates in September.

This major deal will remove over 99 per cent of tariffs on Australian products and increase exports by almost $700M a year.

It will deliver benefits for farmers and food producers on products such as sheep meat, seafood, dairy, beef, lentils, nuts and steel.

With one in four Australian jobs relying on trade, Federal Labor is creating new opportunities for Victoria’s exporters, farmers, producers and businesses to diversify their markets.

And we will continue to ensure Victoria’s high-quality products can be enjoyed by the world, while delivering economic benefits and more jobs for the regions.

Senator Raff Ciccone

Federal Labor Senator for Victoria and Deputy Government Whip in the Senate

WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU WANT TO SEE FUNDED?

In the coming months, I will be pitching local projects to the Treasurer for funding in next year’s Victorian State Budget.

While there are so many incredible local initiatives in crucial need of funding, I am interested in hearing from you about anything that you would like to see for our region.

It could be anything. Some examples we’ve seen already include new schools, upgrades to existing infrastructure, updated facilities for our community groups and volunteers, and much more.

Our region deserves the best. I can’t wait to put forward our case for much-needed investment into our local towns.

If you want to have your say, please get in touch by visiting my Benalla office, emailing me at annabelle.cleeland@parliament.vic.gov.au, or by calling (03) 5762 1600.

Sincerely, Annabelle Cleeland MP Member for Euroa

Local Afghani soccer tournament brings community together

SPORT is a great way to bring communities together. Done right, it can be an opportunity for groups of all ages to come together and engage in a fun social activity and build new friendships. The GV Afghan Youth Association (GVAYA) channelled this mantra last month when they hosted an indoor soccer competition at the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

A young Tekkerz FC team was crowned the Champions of the GVAYA Indoor Competition on Saturday, October 26. Empowered by the youth of the local Afghan community, eight teams and over 70 players competed in the round-robin event.

There were some exciting matches in both the group A and B section, which the top two teams from each played a semi-final. The final match was played between Zulfi Customs Fc Vs Tekkerz Fc. The first half was a tight battle with both sides on a goal apiece, before Tekkerz stormed away with three unanswered goals, winning the grand finale by 4 – 1.

“The objective of this tournament was to unite our diverse young community in a competitive indoor soccer event, fostering participation and enjoyment. It was a wonderful day filled with players, supporters, families, and volunteers all coming together to celebrate,” said player and volunteer Qader Karimi.

The event was sponsored by GSCC, the State Government, along with funding from members of the GVAYA community, who organised the event. FReeZA program was recognised for its role in empowering youth to take charge of organising such events, ensuring a safe, inclusive environment free from drugs, alcohol, vapes and smoke, thereby fostering a positive space for self-expression.

After the success of the day, the GVAFA community is looking to build upon the tournament by making it an annual event, and open it up to the wider community, and possibly attract teams from outside the region to come and compete in Shepparton.

Veteran’s paddle their way to Shepparton

Veteran Table Tennis Tournament held in Shepparton

SHEPPARTON Table Tennis Association (STTA) held the 2024 Shepparton Veteran Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday, November 3 at the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

The one-day event is STTA’s biggest event of their calendar year and is part of the State Table Tennis Circuit contributing

state representation. Competitors ranged from over 30 and up, competing across 24 grades.

This year saw over 75 players from across the state descend upon Shepparton for the tournament.

“It was great to see the Shepparton Veterans Tournament

running in full swing again this year. There were a lot of new faces to the tournament this year and it was a great atmosphere to play in with over 75 players,” said STTA member Josh Lee.

“Congratulations to the many winners of the day with exceptionally hard-fought matches and a great demonstration of table tennis talent.

“A huge thank you to those who helped to set up and pack up for the tournament. Every little bit helped. Acknowledgment also to Table Tennis Victoria and the officials as well as Claire Montgomery for making sure it all ran smoothly. We are looking forwards to a bigger and better tournament next year.”

WILL THEY IMPROVE? WILL THEY REGRESS? THE BIG QUESTIONS FACING GEELONG IN 2025

SEN

SEN Breakfast hosts Sam Edmund and Kane Cornes have run their eyes over Geelong and how they’re shaping up for the 2025 campaign.

With the trade and free agency period now complete, Edmund and Cornes discussed how the club may improve in 2025, how they may regress if things go wrong and the big questions facing the club next season.

The Cats rebounded well in 2024, finishing third on the ladder with 15 wins and eight losses before falling in a tight Preliminary Final to eventual premiers Brisbane at the MCG.

How can they improve?

“I think you can make the case that they’ll be around the mark again,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.

“They’re going to get an extra home game … and it’s one of the toughest places to play, it’s a huge advantage.

“Bailey Smith comes in to bolster a midfield that probably needs some bolstering, albeit their midfield numbers were okay.

“I just think you’ll get some improvement from Tanner Bruhn, Jye Clark hasn’t played much but they’ve got huge raps on him … Max Holmes as well, hopefully he has full confidence in his body to unleash because when he does do that like the Qualifying Final against Port Adelaide, he is as dynamic a player as there is in football. Ollie Henry is also only scratching the surface.

“They’ve still got a few players in their prime like Tom Stewart … they’re going to be there again.”

How might they regress?

“Clearly no ruck is a big issue for me,” Cornes said.

“I just think you need someone who can compete … Chris Scott loves an

athletic ruckman over a lumbering big … which you get from Rhys Stanley and Mark Blicavs.

“They have Toby Conway, but you couldn’t be confident that he can stand up for a full season with his body, as much as they love his talent.

“Then there’s the aging players

we often talk about … but I don’t think that’s as big an issue as others with their rebuilding on the run. I think they’ve done a really good job of resetting on the run with players they’ve brought in.

“But I don’t have many concerns and I’m not writing them off at all.”

The other 2025 burning questions

“The question is as it is each and every year, can they keep contending?” Edmund asked.

“Will they defy equalisation gravity? Will they ever drop off, or will they always contend?”
