Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam McGough opposed the project, citing opposing feedback from adjacent neighborhoods in Northwood Estates and Hamilton Park. McGough’s motion to deny LIHTC support failed, but one councilman voiced agreement. District 11’s Lee Kleinman said he frequently gets calls from constituents who no longer feel safe using the Cottonwood Trail system. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs will host a virtual public hearing on May 18 at 6 p.m. to accept comments on LIHTC projects in four regions including Region 3, which includes Forest and 75. INVESTING IN DALLAS The City’s B.U.I.L.D program supports small businesses one grant at a time
T
hrough Broadening Urban Investments to the Leverage Dallas (B.U.I.L.D) Small Business Grant Program, 45 minority women-owned businesses in southern Dallas have been awarded one-time grants up to $3,000 each, according to DeNita Lacking-Quinn with the City of Dallas’ Office of Economic Development, Business & Workforce Inclusion.
The grants were approved by the B.U.I.L.D. Ecosystem and selected from 129 applicants last year. Qualifying business owners had less than nine employees or a 2019 payroll of less than $250,000. To receive funds, recipients had to complete three coaching sessions from an advisor selected from the B.U.I.L.D Ecosystem, a collaborative of more than 600 business service organizations the City supports. Grants were available for technical training, business funding and guidance and mentorship, as well as rent, payroll, utilities and operating expenses. One recipient, MilkSpace, LLC, says the company provides breastfeeding essentials and “has a special corporate social
responsibility initiative to lessen breastfeeding disparities in disadvantaged and underserved Black Women,” according to the MilkSpace website. “The Dallas B.U.I.L.D grant greatly enhanced MilkSpace, LLC’s ability to remain afloat through the pandemic,” says Kelli Mumphrey, company founder and CEO. “More importantly, the three required sessions with the coach to assist with the development of the Business Continuity Plan was just as valuable. I am grateful for the City of Dallas B.U.I.L.D Ecosystem recognizing the need to support small-owned businesses.” The B.U.I.L.D Ecosystem partners with the City of Dallas Office of Economic Development, Redbird DEC and Dallas County business service organizations including Business & Community Leaders (BCL) of Texas, LIFT Fund, JPMG Chase, Dallas College, Women’s Business Council – Southwest, the Veterans Women’s Enterprise Center and many more. The B.U.I.L.D grant program provides 125 coaching hours – averaging 2.5 hours per recipient, with a possible 1.5 hours each over the following 90-120 days for those seeking additional guidance. M
ichelle Noah has been painting since she was a child growing up in Oklahoma City. She attended art school at The University of Oklahoma before settling down with her husband in Lake Highlands in 1986. Noah has painted in her historic Downtown Garland art studio for nearly five years, but she often sells paintings out of her home here.
BECOMING AN ARTIST IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. When I got married and had kids, I switched over to smaller art and tried my hand at watercolor, and then I did a lot of small folk art. I got a part-time job teaching art at a classical Christian school. The year between finishing teaching and opening this studio, I did a lot of different things. I did pop up art in Snider Plaza. I got 14 artists

to put art there for a month. That’s when I decided I wanted to open my own studio, and two of the artists that were in the pop up started this with me. We looked around and figured that Garland was going to work for us. We would have loved to have been in Lake Highlands because all three of us are Lake Highlands moms, but this just worked better price wise. I knew I wanted to paint, create, become an artist and have a website. D ESC R I B E YOU R CU R R E N T A RT WO R K . I transitioned from a folk art focus. I really got into the whole scene of Oklahoma history and art. When I started the Enneagram series, I had already started moving toward a little more abstract. I took a three-day workshop on a class about abstract and color composition, and that was definitely an influence for me. When I move on from one thing to another, I will definitely paint over something from my past if I don’t like it anymore. I definitely painted over some of my folk art. W H AT I N S P I R E D Y O U T O CREATE “BY THE NUMBERS: A N E N N E AG RA M S E R I ES ” T H AT F E AT U R E D AT T H E EISEMANN CENTER? I have four adult kids, and they kept talking about the Enneagram. They would say, “Oh mom, you’re such a seven.” I’m like, “What’s a seven?” I decided to start learning about it. I ordered a couple of books off of Amazon. Suzanne Stabile’s book is the one I ordered, and I loved it. A friend of mine and I decided to take a two-day [Enneagram] workshop here in Dallas. I painted the nine Enneagrams first, and then I painted the triads. It just has been booming lately as far as people wanting to know about it.
and website. I have art at my house. Sometimes people are closer to Lake Highlands, so they come by my house. I’m doing a show in May at Market Hall, it’s called The Other Art Fair. I’m happy to paint something a certain size with a certain palette, but they kind of have to like my style and what I’ve already done. I’m not gonna paint a portrait, I don’t do those. They have to love the painting, but it also has to fit in their house. Ever since I started a little more of a blue/green with the turquoise/ aqua palette, a lot more people have been interested. That seems to fit more people in terms of what their house is like. W H O T Y P I CA L LY PU RC H AS ES YOU R WO R K? I have a Lake Highlands group that is super supportive and have bought a lot of my art. Lakewood is a place where I seem to have a lot of my art in homes. I’ve got some big pieces like “Moonlight” in a Lakewood home. Enneagram three is in a Lakewood home. Rachel Lindsay, she works for “Extra,” she’s from Dallas, she’s a lawyer and she was the first Black Bachelorette; she sent me a Facebook message and wanted to buy my Enneagram eight. She was on Instagram stories the other day, and my daughter saw my painting in the background, screenshotted it and sent it to me. When someone’s in my house and they’re interested in a painting, I say “Everything’s for sale. If it’s hanging in my house, I’ll sell it to you.” My husband is like “What happened to that painting in the dining room?” I’m not very sentimental about keeping anything.
“I sort of live for the next exhibit.”
W H AT ’S YOU R E N N E AG RA M ? I’m a seven, which is an enthusiastic adventurer. I’m very optimistic, high energy. I probably drive my family crazy a little bit with my energy sometimes. I love trips. I love events. I’m very event-driven, so it’s perfect in the art world because the art world is event driven. I worked two years towards the Eisemann show. I sort of live for the next exhibit. I paint toward something, I paint toward a series, toward a show. I like that, it motivates me. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS? I love Matisse. I love Monet. I love Kandinsky. I probably have more art history books than necessary. H OW CA N P EO P L E S E E A N D BUY YOU R A RT ? Someone can contact me through cell number, my email
W H AT I N S P I R ES YOU A N D YOU R WO R K? My spirituality does influence my art. I wouldn’t call myself an inspirational painter. I don’t paint Christian themes, but I feel like that’s a huge part of who I am. Everything I do comes from a biblical worldview. Being an artist, I love embracing what other people are doing. I love helping young artists. I love mentoring them. I love using my studio to help other people. W H AT ’S N E XT ? My big focus right now is to find some good quality prints for my Enneagrams because it is expensive to buy a piece of original art. And I think there’s people that would love a collection of Enneagram paintings, but maybe a print is more affordable. The Other Art Fair is my next show I have coming up, and that’s in May. I’ve also entered a juried show in Oklahoma City.

magic carpet These rugs from a sister-owned business can fit into any home style
WITH KENDRA ROY LIVING IN DENVER AND COURTNEY ASTRANTI living in Lake Highlands, the sisters wanted to start a business together to stay connected even when they were 800 miles apart. Rugs came up as a business idea while the sisters celebrated Christmas in Lake Highlands in 2019. LHHS graduates Astranti and Roy have each purchased and remodeled three homes, and rugs were always a go-to when it was time to decorate. “We just love the rugs in our
house, and we want people to feel the same love and passion in their own home,” Roy says. Astranti and Roy spent the next few months looking into how to start a business. Last August, the sisters pulled the trigger on what became Two Sisters Vintage Rugs. “If we don’t dive in, this is never going to happen,” Roy says. “And no lie, within like a week’s time we started up a business.” Two Sisters Vintage Rugs offers Turkish and Persian rugs in a range of sizes, color palettes and styles
from its online store. Courtney’s husband is from Italy and was able to connect the sisters to reliable rug suppliers. After initially working with several suppliers, the sisters now routinely work with two Turkish and Persian suppliers that offer the best rugs for the best prices. “Since we’re buying in bulk, we’re able to decrease the price that people can have these beautiful, affordable, one-of-a-kind, super durable rugs that we don’t offer here in the United States,” she says. Smaller rugs average from $120 to

$150 and large to medium rugs range from $300 to $500. Oversized area rugs can range from $1,200 to $3,000. After the sisters pick out new rugs for the week, their suppliers take care of cleaning, packaging and shipping the rugs from Turkey to the U.S. Courtney and Kendra house the rugs themselves. “We have been incredibly lucky to sell a lot of our rugs on a weekly basis, so we haven’t had the need to rent out more space,” Astranti says. The suppliers work as part of a family business. The parents and grandparents of the suppliers have have long passed the trade. The sisters say each rug comes with its own story. Some rugs come with symbols woven into them from Turkish culture, such as small animals and floral motifs. “Animal motifs are a symbol of power, courage and strength, whereas floral motifs are typically telling a story of life and growth,“ Astranti says. “It’s like a piece of art on the floor.” The rugs’ foundational materials are woven with wool or the more economical cotton. The sisters say their rugs can last a lifetime and are kid- and pet-proof. Rug cleaning simply involves clear laundry soap, water and a little sunshine. Roy suggests using a soft bristle brush to scrub in clear laundry soap, hosing the rug down with water and leaving it to dry in the sun for a few days. The rugs can fit into any style, from Old World to contemporary modern. Astranti has more eclectic taste while Roy enjoys more contemporary style, but both sisters have Persian Heriz rugs in their own bedrooms and living areas and Turkish rugs in their bathrooms. “It can be molded into anything you want, which is what is so fun about it,” Roy says. “If it speaks to you, you can find a place for it in your house.” Designing around a rug can be one approach for a room. The sisters say, at times, a rug is simply the missing component to an already designed space. “I feel like a rug just really hones in on a space and that detail makes it homey and brings it alive,” Astranti says.
Sisters Kendra Roy, left, and Courtney Astranti, right, started Two Sisters Vintage Rugs last summer.
For those working to incorporate more rugs into a home, the sisters recommend starting with mini or runner rugs underneath the kitchen sink, in the laundry room and in the bathroom. For rugs that might not measure up exactly with a space, layering rugs are a good option. “I like to use IKEA’s jute rugs, and then I’ll put one of our Turkish or Persian rugs on top of it and put them in a bedroom, a living room, dining room,” she says. It is common to see homes with layered runners in the living room in front of the couch with a big jute that covers the entire room. The sisters have also seen runners stapled all the way down a flight of stairs. We always say, if you can see your floor, you need more rugs,” the sisters say in unison.
18 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com APRIL 2021
When Astranti and Roy aren’t managing Two Sisters Vintage Rugs, they are likely working part-time as nurses or tending to their toddlers. But they say managing their toddlers is more challenging than balancing time at the hospital. “Naptime has been key,” Roy says. “We know that we get at least two to three hours and our kids nap at the exact same time. It is head on the pillow and then we talk or we source or we get back to customers.” In December, Astranti’s family packed up their lives in Dallas and moved to Denver to be closer to Roy’s family. While the sisters miss the Lake Highlands community, Friday night football games and fond memories at Mi Cocina, they are excited to continue their business together. “We’re still all smiles,” Roy says.

Carver Park’s pop ups around Dallas. “It’s a good little theater of food,” he says. “When you stick to a cuisine, per se, you’re kind of locked in.” Rowland did not attend culinary school, but he cooked his way through college by serving a variety of families. He then moved to Dallas to figure out his next step after graduating college in 1981. “When I came down here, I got to work with probably some of the most dynamic chefs that there were at the time,” he says. He was a chef across Europe, the U.S. and Dallas, including with the Dallas Nationals and The Crescent. “What I bring to Carver is a huge amount of experience,” he says. T he oppor tunity to open Car ver Park came along in 2014 after he was cooking for the Miami Heat.

Rowland had options to open the restaurant in northern Dallas suburbs, but he wanted Carver Park to be more centrally located. Even be tter, the space he chose along Rambler Road was ripe for growth. “There were fields when I started, and now you see all these really nice living dwellings, apartments and condominiums popping up relatively quickly,” Rowland says. Creating a shared experience with customers is key. The clientele often dec ides w hat bec o mes a signat ure menu item. “It’s as easy as discussing with your guests as they’re coming in,” he says. “You build up that trust and that really starts showcasing things.” The greens that accompany Carver Pa r k ’s m a i n d i s h e s a r e e s s e n t i a l . he year of COVID is to blame for historically low interest rates and an influx of buyers in East Dallas’ residential real estate market, says residential mortgage loan officer David Betbadal. “It essentially turned into a mess for buyers,” Betbadal says. “The sellers were doing great because they’d list a home and there would be multiple offers, way over asking.” The Willow Bend Mortgage loan officer attributes this to neighbors not wanting to move or let people into their homes. This led to a lack of supply on the market. Dallas is now in a seller’s market, says Mason Whitehead, branch manager of Churchill Mortgage. That means it would take less than three months for all available homes in the area to be sold. “What we’ve seen nationwide, but especially in Texas with the migration to Texas, is a huge housing boom like we’ve never seen before,” he says. When buyers realized the game had gotten so extreme, Betbadal says they were more willing to bid higher on a home than they would have or accept less than they might have just to get into a home. “It’s almost like house mania, if you will,” he says. “You just wanted to get in on something just so that you could.” Another factor driving the demand for homes is an influx of people from other states, such as California and New York, who are looking for lower taxes and more space, says Whitehead, who’s been at Churchill for 11 years.

Five $1 million homes But that’s not the only reason. “People know they can sell their house. That’s not an issue,” he says. “But where do you go? You’ve got a lot of pent-up hesitation because, I know I can sell, but where do I buy?” As we slowly come out of COVID, Bethadal predicts homeowners will be more willing to move, which may result in more inventory. “But it’s not necessarily going to solve all the problems,” he says. “It will be a little stream of homes. It won’t be the exact supply that’s needed, but it will hopefully help the situation.”
LISTED IN LAKE HIGHLANDS, SUMMER 2020
Like all markets, the pendulum will shift. Betbadal cannot predict the future, but as interest rates begin to rise and homes become more expensive as a result, the demand may be tempered.

“Maybe this is the beginning of normalization for the market,” he says.

TODAY’S MID - CENTURY MODERN A look inside this Old Lake Highlands home with views for days Story by ELIZABETH UCLÉS | Photography by COSTA CHRIST
›
W
hen you walk into Keegan and Valerie Begley’s Van Dyke Road home, a bathroom covered in blue tiling will catch your eye. This bathroom is the only thing that remains from the couple’s remodel of the mid-century modern gem overlooking White Rock Lake. Everything else has been stripped down to the bones.
First built in 1961, the home was designed by Donald H. Speck, a Texas architect who passed away in the ‘70s. The Begleys’ predecessors lived in the Old Lake Highlands home for nearly 16 years. They had tacked on an addition to the home and completed a significant remodel. “By the time they moved out, trends and styles changed, and so we wanted to put our own spin on it,” Keegan says. Keegan and Valerie, who both wo r k i n m e d i ca l d ev i c e sa l es, bought the Van Dyke home in December 2015 and moved in the following January. The couple previously living in Lochwood were looking to upgrade homes with the arrival of their second child. A pool and a new roof was added. Walls were torn down to redistribute and open up space in the 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home. The home spans two floors with a view-out basement serving as the bottom floor. Basements are a rarity in Dallas as the region’s clay soils make them challenging to engineer. “They built this house before air conditioning was really popular,” Keegan says. “So it makes sense to have dwelling or sleeping units downstairs because it stays cool there.” The husband-and-wife duo crafted the home’s interior with an eye for mid-century modern design, but they balanced aesthetics and function when selecting furniture. Milo Baughman, Eames and Knoll furniture pieces are well-represented inside the home. “That was the goal, to incorporate mid-century modern classics with some of the newer stuff that you can get at West Elm or CB2,” Keegan says.
april 2021
lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 39
The couple spends much of their free time reading up on furniture and design. Keegan now has a collection of books on mid-century modern design by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. “We bought this house because we liked this style, but now the house has probably influenced us as much as we have it,” Keegan says. “I feel like living here is like living in art,” Valerie replies. A majority of the renovations and design occurred over the last four years. “You have to live in the space for a little while to figure out how you want to change it and make sure it’s laid out properly,” Keegan says. “In a house like this with so many different corners and edges and angles, it’s hard to figure out how to lay out furniture, what to buy and how to use this space.” There is not one straight wall inside the home, every wall sits at an angle. This makes it difficult to get an accurate square footage on the house. The City of Dallas has the home at 4,200 square feet, but some appraisers measure it at 5,200 square feet. Yards included, the home sits on seven tenths of an acre of land. The Begleys had to get creative to adjust to some of the more complicated angles in the house and maximize space. A frameless shower in the master bathroom and a curbless shower in the other downstairs bathroom helped open things up. Taking the shower glass to the floor and adding a floating vanity made the space feel even bigger. “As big as some of these open areas are in the house, the bathrooms could feel a little bit tight if you didn’t do them right,” Keegan says. Spending more time at home the past year inspired the Begleys to brainstorm even more renovations

and additions. A speakeasy on the bottom floor is now in the works as a result. Despite Keegan initially thinking indoor plants were tacky, Valerie’s quarantine hobby added over 52 plants in their home. “I have not met a plant that I can’t find a spot for here,” Valerie says. When thinking about the greenery outside, the Begleys were looking to give the landscaping a more modern look.

The front went from one measly rose bush to various cacti and bushes. The combination of a modern yard and plentiful large windows make the Van Dyke home a sight to see for its frequent passersby. Valerie enjoys sitting in the front room while sipping a cup of coffee and watching people go by, while Keegan loves driving by his illu-

minated home at night. “The room that you probably use the least is what makes the house, right?” Keegan says of the front room. The windows let you see right through the home from the front to the backyard. There’s a great view of the lake while washing the dishes. The Van Dyke home makes you
feel like you are in the country. The backyard backs up to a variety of trails. It was one of the reasons the Begleys bought the home. “I’ve got a horse that we keep over at White Rock Stables, and you can ride her right up to the backyard here,” Keegan says. After five years on Van Dyke Road, the Begleys will pass their labor of love to a new homeowner.

Achieving Functionality HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR HOME’S SPACE
Story by ELIZABETH UCLÉS | Illustrations by JESSICA TURNER

hile interior designer Kim Armstrong was working on a kitchen renovation inside a L ake Highlands home, she noticed the artistic and entrepreneurial spirit of the family’s daughter. The daughter crafted items that she sold on Etsy, but her se tup w a s a l l o ve r t h e k i t c h e n . A r m strong brainstormed how the renovation could incorporate their daughter ’s hobby.
44 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com APRIL 2021
Armstrong car ved out a workspace for the daughter in the nearby laundry room by removing space from an oversized adjacent living room. Widening the laundry room created a separation from the washer and dr yer and the daughter ’s desk. She now had all the space she needed to create. “ We created a functional envir o n m e n t t h at w a s n o t go i n g t o feel like she was sitting next to the washer and dr yer,” she says.
To redesign spaces catered to family functionality, Armstrong asks clients these questions: How does this house function for you now? What do you like about it? What is not working for you here? The 18-year interior designer a n d 14 - ye a r n e i g h b o r s ay s t h i s helps homeowners think about messes in their space and how these problem areas can be transformed. In Armstrong’s experience, rethinking design has resulted in

new crafting spaces or areas to hold backpacks after school and extrac urric ulars. “A lot of our homes were built in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and the y just weren’ t designed for t h a t ,” s h e s a y s o f L a k e H i g h l a n d s . “ B u t a s t h i n g s h ave e v o l ve d , l i f e s ty l e s h ave e v o l ve d and kids are involved in more activities.” Rethinking design for functionality helped one Merriman Park Estates mom create a multifunctional desk space. To do this, Armstrong a n d t h e h o m e o w n e r a d d e d a fi l i n g c a b i n e t , printer and gif t wrapping s tation all in one an existing armoire next to the desk. To the r ight of the desk ar ea, Ar ms t r o n g and the cl ient transfor med the space i n t o a “dumping station” with hooks to hold backpacks and c ubbies to store shoes. Rather than expand, many Lake Highlands families can use existing space to support their day-to-day lives. “Instead of thinking, ‘How does my home look? Think of, ‘How does my home function?’” Armstrong says. “It’s such an important thing, especially in some of our homes that are a bit on the smaller end.”

THE EIGHT-STEP PROCESS
HOW TO ACHIEVE HIGH-QUALITY DESIGN IN ONE WEEK
Armstrong launched a Design Concierge package at the start of the pandemic that offers full-service design quality without breaking the bank. The condensed process goes through each level of design and produces a “paint by numbers” in the end for the homeowner. “The client will be able to have a set of instructions that will guide them through the design that we create together,” she says. “They will be able to procure that and install that on their own, given the directions and specific selections that we make during that process.” Armstrong first goes through a “programming process” where she learns the homeowner’s aesthetic desires and needs. She maps out goals and sets expectations for what can be achieved through the Design Concierge.
1 . Pre-consultation :
Armstrong asks clients to create Pinterest boards with visual inspiration photos. Homeowners send her photos of their space before the phone consultation.
2. Phone consultation: For 45 minutes to an hour, Armstrong and clients review design needs and what isn’t liked about the current space.
3. Be fore mee ting in pers on:
Armstrong bookmarks ideas and concepts for the clients.
4. In-person meeting: Clients and Armstrong narrow down selections for a new design board. 5. Paint by numbers: After gathering all necessary information from the in-person meeting, Armstrong transforms her notes into a formula for the client’s space. Examples: Re-upholster chairs, buy additional furniture, how to incorporate existing pieces, choosing paints and wallpapers.
6. Floor plan: Armstrong draws up a floor plan with notes on styling, tips and inspirational images.
7. Work orders: Clients receive the floor plan. Armstrong writes up work orders and suggests vendors. 8. Purchasing page:
Armstrong sends the clients a page of links and steps to follow to execute the design.

The price effectiveness comes through in the weeklong timeline. With full-service design, Armstrong typically spends three to six months with a client. “Every week, I’m dedicating time and resources that my company has dedicated to your project,” she says. “It takes a massive amount of time and company resources.” Design Concierge is completed in a formatted way for her to predict the number of hours she spends on a project. “We source from Spoonflower on some things, but then we also source to some higher-end vendors,” A r m s t r o n g s ay s . “ T h r o u g h t h e programming process, I’ ll get a sense for, if we’re going to choose S chumacher or DecoratorsBest online to pull your fabric samples.” This package is unique to Armstrong. Other designer equivalents take form in online design or hourly consultations. “I didn’t want to do that,” she says of hourly consultations. “No. 1 because I knew that a successful design project has to go through multiple phases of the design process.” Armstrong has averaged about two clients a month since Design Concierge started last year. She says she will cap the service at two clients for now to keep up with fullservice design as well. Clients can take advantage of Design Concierge without Armstrong ever stepping into their home. Emailing, pinning and social media makes the planning process a breeze. Once it comes time to put the plan in motion, Armstrong can get an eye for the space over Zoom. Lake Highlands neighbors interested in Armstrong’s colorfully eclectic aesthetic and approach may find this service more financially in reach compared to full-service design. “ T h i s i s a g r e a t w ay t o ge t professional help and a game plan for their space in a more affordable manner,” she says.

t’s not true, but it does seem like trailer parks attract tornadoes more than other areas and inflict severe damage to our most vulnerable neighbors. The same was true during the cold spell at the end of February that some have dubbed snowpocalypse. An apocalypse is literally an unveiling event. Something that is otherwise hidden is revealed. And that’s what happened when the two weeks of our winter of discontent rolled in. The most fragile homes, structures and people suffered the greatest loss. Two women’s emergency shelters — Genesis Women’s Shelter and The Family Place — lost power and saw water pipes burst, leading to the forced evacuation of already traumatized women and children. These extraordinary nonprofits provide refuge to those who are escaping domestic violence. The storms added insult to injury. The church I serve provided short-term relief to the 123 women and kids from The Family Place until pipes burst in our building too, and the loss of water forced another disruptive move. Whatever inconvenience others experienced during that time — some are still dealing with lingering effects of water damage — think of what it was like for these families. Their homes were not safe from the threat of physical abuse. Their emergency shelter was not safe from a severe weather event. They ended up sleeping on cots in a church that was like a dormitory with no showers or privacy. Dallas has heroic people who look after women and children in domestic distress: Paige Flink and her staff at The Family Place, Jan Langbein and her staff at the Genesis Women’s Shelter and Mona Kafeel at the Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation, just to name a few. Magnanimous

philanthropy fuels these ministries. Compassionate advocates pursue social and legal protections to address abuse and give hope to those who have endured it. Churches, synagogues, mosques and other organized faith communities don’t exist only for themselves. They are also part of the wider community and have the spiritually imposed charge to love their neighbors as themselves. Most nonprofit organizations that do charitable work are faith-based, such as The Salvation Army and Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation, or they were started by people with a faith-inspired vision of the world, such as the aforementioned women’s shelters. All these groups form a buffer zone between government and private interests. Faith communities do not pay taxes, although the police and fire departments serve us when we need them. This arrangement is partly due to our country’s commitment to religious liberty but also to the social contract that recognizes our helpful role in contributing to the needs of the community that otherwise would require additional taxpayer burden. Our social fabric is a complex matrix of public, private and philanthropic efforts to maintain communal well-being. When any one of these fails to do its part, we lose an important leg in the social safety net stool. Once again during this crisis, we witnessed the important role of faithful individuals and groups doing their part. GEORGE MASON is pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, president of Faith Commons and host of the “Good God” podcast.
