Thanks to more than 300 volunteers, Thomas Jefferson High School received a makeover recently.
Fidelity Investments teamed up with students and teachers to remodel the rooms that serve English language learners and their families. They also updated the family life skills room and painted murals throughout the Preston Hollow school.
The renovations were part of Fidelity Investments’ School Transformation Day, an event hosted by the company’s employee volunteer program.

Janet Kafka’s affinity for Spanish culture started when she was an exchange student at the University of Madrid, and it’s infiltrated every aspect of her life. Her Glendora Avenue home is based on the country’s architecture. She’s served as the honorary consul of Spain since 1997 and has helped the Meadows Museum acquire the most comprehensive Spanish art collection in the United States.
As a way to say thank you, the museum added Salvador Dali’s “Aliyah” to its collection in her honor. The 25 color lithographs were commissioned to celebrate the founding of Israel.
It’s one of the few complete sets in the series that still are in existence.

Dallas’ favorite athlete happens to be our neighbor
No city worships football quite as hard as Dallas, but arguably our most beloved athlete isn’t known for touchdowns or rushing yards.
Dallas loves Dirk Nowitzki because he led the Mavericks’ 2011 NBA Championship run without bragging once. We admire how the 7-foot-tall German native refuses to leave the city, even though he’s taken several substantial voluntary pay cuts. And we savor the limited glimpses into his personal life here in Preston Hollow, since he rarely talks about his wife, Jessica, or their three children.
In 2008, the Dallas icon became our neighbor, but he doesn’t have much time to relax there. Nowitzki’s dedicated to his namesake foundation, which focuses on improving children’s health, education and well-being.
Out of all of Dallas, how did you end up in Preston Hollow?
I love where we live. It’s close to all of the schools. It’s a great area, great neighbors, great houses, great lots. I used to live in Highland Park. I moved out of there, because I wanted a little more yard. We found what we were looking for.
How’d you choose the focus of your foundation, and why is it important to you?
I founded my foundation in 2001. Just traveling the world and seeing I was blessed and fortunate — not only now, but also growing up with two parents. They always took care of us. There’s a lot of families in this world who weren’t as fortunate, so I wanted to help wherever I could. We support projects around the area, but we’ve done some stuff overseas. We’ve found some projects to last 15, 16 years. We’re going to continue that work hopefully long after I’m done with my career.
What are your favorite accomplishments with the foundation?
There’s been some great little projects we’ve found. Sometimes it might be the small lacrosse after-school program that has 20 kids. There’s so many great volunteers out there that do amazing work, but they don’t get that recognition, or they’re struggling to help these kids. So to be able to help them stay alive with funding is a great feeling.
If you could play any celebrity in next year’s fundraising tennis classic, who would it be? Well, we had a pretty good lineup the last few years. We had some amazing players. Andy
Roddick came. We had John Isner last year, who was top 10 in the world. It’s been awesome. The support of not only the celebs who fly out but also the fans and sponsors has been amazing, so hopefully we can pull another off next year.
Michael Gruber, of “The Ticket,” grew up in your current home. We have to ask “Where Grubes at?” and how did that catchphrase come to be? Grubes always used to tell the story that I was sleeping in his childhood bed. It was like a little toy car bed. He always said I took it. One day, someone asked me about it on Twitter, so I said “Where Grubes at?” That’s how that happened.
Interview edited for clarity.

PRESTON HOLLOW stakes claim to some of Dallas’ most inventive and established Asian restaurants. Whether you’re craving chicken tikka masala, Chinese dumplings or an unconventional sushi roll, our neighborhood has it all. You just have to know where to look.
Blue Sushi Sake Grill isn’t authentic by any means, but that’s part of its appeal.
Its creativity compensates for its nontraditional approach. Diners choose from hearty entrees like toban-yaki — meat and rice roasted on a clay plate — or quirky vegetarian options like the Thai Hippie Roll with tempura and peanut sauce.
“We try to take traditional techniques, traditional ingredients and repurpose those in a different type of sushi,” executive chef Tony Gentile says.
The Omaha-based chain revamped their menu in early October. Longtime customers shouldn’t panic, Gentile says, but even popular items were reimagined.
“You don’t want to take things off the menu, because people get very upset about it, but you have a big picture to paint without making everyone mad. We took a lot of what we did and elevated it. It’s more vibrant, more colorful.”

When Shu-Chang “Buck” Kao opened Royal China in 1974, he couldn’t have imagined that it would become the city’s oldest Chinese restaurant.
The retired colonel and diplomat simply wanted to introduce Dallas to his home cuisine.
Four decades later, his son, George, and daughter- in-law, April, run the Preston Royal eatery. The couple expanded its offerings to include modern fare, authentic dishes and a dumpling and noodle bar, where customers watch the “dumpling ladies” cook made-fromscratch specialties.
“Our restaurant is more nontraditional,” April says. “We’re a little more modernized design-wise.”
Royal China hired chef Wei-Gou Cai to perfect its regional entrees, like Ants Climbing Trees, a dish from Sichaun that includes vermicelli, minced pork and chili sauce. General Kao’s chicken and Mongolian beef are longtime staples, and the soup dumplings, xiao long bao, are in high demand.
“It’s comfort food that we would eat ourselves,” April says.

Pardeep Sharma couldn’t convince people to try Indian food when he introduced the concept to North Dallas in 1985.
So he launched a lunch buffet for neighbors to try a little bit of everything at India Palace, now tucked inside the Preston Valley shopping center. Once customers realized the upscale restaurant’s cuisine was packed with flavor and fresh ingredients — not heat and grease, they poured in.
“I want to make sure what I do, I do it best,” Sharma says.
Naan, a soft flatbread, is baked fresh daily in a traditional tandoor oven. Although the menu primarily features northern Indian dishes, Sharma’s added a handful from the spicy southern state of Goa.
The restaurateur encourages Indian food novices to try chicken tikka masala first. It’s India Palace’s trademark dish, and the recipe hasn’t been altered in decades.
“If something is working out, you don’t change it,” he says.

The neighborhood’s most interesting mid-century modern homes are under the spotlight every October when owners are asked to open their doors for a good cause. The Modern Mile Home Tour, which marked its third year, is a fundraiser for Walnut Hill Elementary School. This year, the tour brought in more than $45,000 for the local public school, which will go toward program and facility improvements. Funds raised for the school in the first two years paid for the new courtyard (top photo) that was previously inaccessible to handicapped children. The tour highlights many of Preston Hollow’s architectural gems, which celebrate unusual design and craftsmanship.
Nearly 1,000 people all across the city visited Preston Hollow homes on the Modern Mile Home Tour.
HOCKADAY, PROBABLY CLASS OF 1983
Sure, she is a fictional character, but Claire Underwood’s rich backstory includes a little piece of Preston Hollow. Played by Emmy-nominee Robin Wright, in season four of Netflix’s “House of Cards” it is revealed that Underwood is a “Dallas debutante” who attended Preston Hollow’s prestigious Hockaday School. Based on fan pages concurring she was born in 1965, she perhaps was a fictional member of the class of 1983.
What she’s up to now: This season, Underwood serves as 47th president of the United States.
Three things to know:
1
Prior to embarking on her political quest, Claire was CEO of an environmental nonprofit. She was ousted after a nasty court battle; fans of the show suspect she held the position merely to make herself seem less awful, anyway.
2 Claire met husband, Francis Underwood at Radcliffe College. Wed in 1987, they chose world domination over child rearing. A poignant episode reveals Claire’s miniscule vulnerable side, as she speaks publicly of the abortion she had years ago. To beef-up the plotline: 50-year-old Claire, at that point, wanted a baby.
3 Claire hails from a family of wealthy ranchers. She had a close relationship with her father but a strained one with Mom, Elizabeth Hale, who always told her daughter to “frown less, smile more.”

THE HOCKADAY SCHOOL students have been exposed to a myriad of cultures since its inception a century ago.
Founder Ela Hockaday prioritized cultural awareness so much that in 1928, she encouraged a handful of students and teachers to explore Europe for seven months.
Now students can study in Buenos Aires, Argentina or Australia’s Gold Coast their sophomore year to satisfy their wanderlust. Teens from across the globe move to Preston Hollow for an elite education, too.
Leaving family, friends and familiarity behind is daunting at only 13 or 14 years old. Boarder Buddies Programs, offered to boarding students, helps ease that transition.
The teens are matched with parents or staff members who can help soothe homesickness or navigate cultural barriers. They go out to dinner, watch movies and even spend holidays together.
“It recreates the home they’re missing,” says Meshea Matthews, director of residential life and global outreach. “Many times the families become friends, even though they’re so far away.”
What’s most important to Matthews is that international students find their niche without changing their identity. In the five years that she’s worked for the program, it’s something that worries students and parents alike.
“One of their greatest fears is, ‘Will she lose her culture?’ ” she says.
Students find creative ways to maintain touchstones to their heritage. In the past, they formed a Korean pop dance troupe that performed at the school, while another group of teens held Bollywood dance classes.
“It lets us thoughtfully engage with the perspective they bring,” says Gary Stollar, international program coordinator. “They help us look at things through their eyes.”
ELISSA CHUDWINBesides a multitude of activities and games, this year’s carnival also features a Foodie Silent Auction. Attendees can bid on gift cards and certificates from neighborhood restaurants. PIECE OF THE PAST
DALLAS MAYOR R.L. THORTON pulled out a huge pair of scissors when he cut the ribbon on the Preston Royal shopping center on July 12, 1956. It was followed by a threeday celebration that was heavily advertised across the city, and the site of the inaugural Miss Preston Royal pageant. It began in the northeast corner of its namesake intersection, later growing to include the northwest side of the street. Original shops included Holiday Cleaning, which used state-of-the-art dry cleaning techniques; Wyatt’s grocery store and Safari Steak House, with its murals of Bengal tigers and cuisines filled with unusual spices. High-end clothing retailer Lester Melnick was the longest standing tenant with more than 40 years at the corner center.

Tech keeps the Jekaucs’ lives simple
Nearly everything in Igor Jekauc’s Windsor Park home is controlled by the touch of a button or the sound of his voice.
The self-proclaimed tech geek built a playground to test the latest smart home devices on the market. He devotes hours to researching each gadget, many of which connect to his iPhone.
“I’ve always loved stuff that’s efficient, whether it’s technology or not,” Jekauc says. “I love recycling and having a small footprint.”
Besides purchasing several of the increasingly popular Amazon Alexa speakers, Jekauc owns contraptions that do everything from monitor his family’s electrical usage to turn on the sprinkler systems. Most of these trinkets are practical and cost effective, Jekauc says, while others are simply fun.
“My friends are like, ‘You have so much technology that it’s going to take over your house,’” laughs Kelly, his wife, a typical fear for anyone who watched HAL 9000 take over the ship in “2001: A Space Odyessy.”
The web-based service IFTTT integration, which activates the devices under certain conditions, is one of Jekauc’s favorites. If someone rings his doorbell, the TV automatically pauses and switches to security footage. If his Fitbit detects he didn’t get enough sleep, his wife receives an email that says, “Grumpy husband alert.”
At first, Kelly thought her husband was going a bit overboard and worried everything would malfunction. But the juggle of raising their energetic 1-year-old daughter with their chaotic schedule helped change her mind.
“It makes it a little bit easier, especially with a baby,” she says.

The red blotches are concealed with the name Kiley, the birth date 7-25-13 and a heartshaped charm representing mother’s love.
If the 26-year-old ever shot up again, she’d have to push the needle through her daughter’s name.
“She gave me another reason to fight, instead of giving up,” she says.
Six years of Nixon’s life were consumed with opioids, heroin and cocaine. She’s been sober for more than a year now — something that once seemed unattainable.
“It’s just calmness,” she says. “You finally feel like you can breathe. There’s not that rubber band around you that you’ve had for a long time.”
People who undergo trauma — which can be a catalyst for mental illnesses like post-traumatic stress disorder — are more susceptible to addiction. More than 59 percent of young people with PTSD develop substance abuse problems, studies show.
Trauma and addiction alter one’s chemistry, although people often do not view them as diseases.
“Once the brain changes, the systems to help you calm down and self-soothe get hurt,” says Dr. Harold Urschel, chief medical strategist of Enterhealth, an addiction treatment center in Preston Center.
Nixon and her sister were adopted into a Preston Hollow family. Like many adopted children, she struggled with feelings of abandonment. Dyslexia and Auditory Processing Disorder — which prevents her from comprehending some sounds and staying focused compounded her mental stress. As a teen, she came out as lesbian to a world that didn’t accept her. Her friends deserted her and her parents disapproved, so she kept dating men.
“It’s very hard for me to connect to my emotions,” Nixon says. “The only one I could process is anger.”
At first, Nixon didn’t see any of these moments as traumatic. When she was diagnosed with PTSD, she felt it didn’t fit. In her mind, PTSD was for war veterans or crime victims.
But trauma, whether emotional or physical, is “when something happens that overwhelms your safety or social norms,” Urschel says.
“There was something missing, and I couldn’t figure it out,” Nixon says. “I felt drugs were the missing piece. I knew that wasn’t the key, but that worked.”
Self-medicating with drugs or alcohol to mitigate trauma only harms the brain more, says Marie Krebs, a Preston Hollow-based therapist and interventionist. Like trauma, addiction often is perceived as weakness in society, which causes people to hide from their problems, instead of seeking help.
“We don’t heal in isolation,” she says. “We get sick in isolation.”
By 23, Nixon took a combination of at least 20 OxyContin and hydrocodone, which are in the same family as heroin, every day. She passed off an old knee X-ray to a rotating cast of doctors for prescription painkillers. She thought the drugs helped her stay calm and productive.
“Whenever you look back, you’re like, ‘Oh shit, I did cross that line,’ ” Nixon says. “You don’t realize in the moment that is what you’re doing.”
Nixon is one of an estimated 27 million people in the United States who abuse prescription pills.
More than 59,000 people died from overdose in 2016, according to the New York Times. The rate has increased so rapidly that it’s considered a public health crisis.
The Preston Hollow area has seen 33 overdoses in three years, and 58 percent of them involved prescription painkillers. When addicts can no longer acquire the prescriptions they
33 people overdosed in Zip Codes 75230, 75225 and 75220.
need, they seek alternative options, sometimes with fatal results. “When addicts die, many are mixing and matching whatever they can get … It’s a poly drug problem,” says Jane Maxwell, a research professor who has devoted 46 years to researching drug trends. “It’s ‘I can’t get heroin today, but I’ll go get whatever to get me through the night until I can solve the problem.’ ”
Nixon tried heroin — a gift from a man she dated — for the first time on her 23rd birthday. Before she met her family for dinner, he showed her how to shoot up in a parking garage.
“I was uncomfortable with my parents and my sister,” she says. “I knew hydrocodone brought me comfort so that’s what gave me the green light for heroin.”
Nixon shot up regularly after that for several months, until she found out she was pregnant. She went to an outpatient program that recommended she take Suboxone to curb her opioid cravings. The consequences of that drug were heavy.
When she was born, Nixon’s baby girl was jittery and couldn’t be soothed. The newborn, Kiley, was withdrawing from Suboxone, which required a month stay in the hospital.
“There were babies in the NICU that were so tiny and weren’t able to go home, and it broke my heart,” Nixon says. “You see my child at 9 pounds, very big and healthy, but she’s there because of something I did. All of these babies it wasn’t because of something their parents did to them.”
Nixon called the little girl’s father two weeks after she was born. She told him she didn’t
“I felt drugs were the missing piece. I knew that wasn’t the key, but that worked.”
need any money, but she hoped he’d be a part of her life.
He seemed excited, Nixon says. But Kiley never met her father. Three days later, he was dead of a suicide. Nixon found out on Facebook.
His parents still don’t know about Kiley, and Nixon wrestles with telling them.
“It’s something I think about all the time,” she says. “It’s one of the reasons I used. … Maybe it’s not the right time. Maybe they need more time. But my daughter is 4. She’s going to start asking questions, and I won’t be able to answer them.”
Parenting, mourning and working full-time was overwhelming, Nixon says. She turned to cocaine for comfort and eventually admitted herself into Enterhealth, where she was diagnosed with PTSD and learned coping skills to quell her fears of abandonment.
“They may not like going through therapy, but once they have, they’re so relieved,” Urschel says. “They feel like a great weight has been lifted from their shoulders, and they’re starting to be happy again, many times for the first time in years.”
Nixon feels at peace, she says, but she’s navigating how best to raise her daughter. Her parents took care of Kiley while Nixon stayed in sober living houses. She wasn’t there to tuck her in to bed or give her baths, something she did every night, even when she was using.
She knows her parents, who are 70 and 67, already raised two daughters. But she worries about disrupting her daughter’s sense of stability. Still, she moved back to Preston Hollow recently and lives with her family once again.
“I want her to live with me,” she says. “At the same time, it’s removing her from all she knows. Those are the people who have been in her life for all of it.”
But Nixon sees that her family is proud of how far she’s come — they celebrated her one-year sobriety date with a trip to Disneyland. But she won’t say she feels accomplished; she’s just grateful.
“I remember when I was using, there were always conflicts, and now they just see someone whose very calm,” she says. “They probably notice I’m able to bring up the elephants in the room, because I’m not scared of them.”

up with the trends with small spruce up tips:
1. Be bold — Trade in the classic white-on-white look for a richer color palette. Paint walls or bring in bright accents.
2. Bring in the natural — Try something other than pinecones. Opt for autumn accents like cotton boll bouquets, eucalyptus branches and some rustically designed candles.
3. Brass and bronze — Darker metals add a warm richness as an accent on faucets and handles.

4. Golden god — Gold is all the rage as accent tables, lamps and other gilded accessories.
5. Chunky-knit — The more texture the better, in throw pillows and blankets.
Now cozy up to the fire and enjoy your elegant abode.
