New to the neighborhood: Roam Fine Goods, Bricks & Minifigs
Preston Royal Village has yet another new tenant. Roam Fine Goods, a boutique that offers home décor, jewelry and apparel, opened next door to Society Bakery. Lego enthusiasts can now peruse the independent toy store Bricks & Minifigs at the Preston Valley Shopping Center. Operated by Jason and Andrea Klima, the 3,500-square-foot boutique sells rare Lego pieces and sets.
Preston Hollow is known for mansions … and now this swanky tree house
Lavish mansions are part of our neighborhood’s norms, but this swanky tree house is so impressive that it’s featured on Animal Planet’s “Treehouse Masters.”
The Preston Hollow couple, named Larissa and KC, hired the Washington-based company Nelson Treehouse and Supply to construct their getaway. The one-bedroom tree house is nestled between three Oak trees and was built 9 feet above the ground.
Finally, a North Dallas dessert shop that doesn’t ruin cookie dough by baking it
Cookie dough was once something most only scraped from the bottom of a bowl or indulged in with ice cream. Earlier this year, cookie dough shops became trendy, with several opening in New York and Illinois. Soon, northern Dallasites will have easy access to the sweet treat. The Dough Dough is slated to open at the northwest corner of Preston and Forest in February 2018.

Whatever bridge you’re crossing,
UP FRONT
THE RINGLEADER
From the carnival to Bravo, LeeAnne Locken always takes the bull by the horns
LeeAnne Locken has spent her whole life preparing to step into the limelight. From growing up in an actual carnival to working the Miss USA pageant circuit, she now revels in the chaos that reality TV creates. She moved to Preston Hollow 20 years ago and made her reality show debut on “Big Rich Texas” before assuming her role as an outspoken instigator on the “Real Housewives of Dallas.” The glass-tossing philanthropist doesn’t stray from drama, but she insists that isn’t why she stampeded into the spotlight. Locken is all about helping others, she says, and being a household name draws attention to the causes she values most. “I don’t need to be a part of the show,” she says. “I’m not trying to show you my $30,000 watch. I’m not dropping price tags left and right on camera. I’m just living my authentic life.”
What do you love about the neighborhood, and what do you hate?
What I love about Preston Hollow is that the lots are larger. We almost have a half-acre here. It’s fabulous, because we have one side yard with the swimming pool and the cabana. Then we have a whole other yard just for the dogs. What I don’t like is all the construction at Preston and Royal. It’s been a tiny bit of a mess over there. I’ve been trying to avoid that area if at all possible, except for the fact my grocery store, my dry cleaners, my hair bar, Starbucks — everything I go to — is right there. Keep tearing up those streets, people.
How has Preston Hollow changed since you moved here?
Originally, what was in the surrounding area was perfect for the age of the community, but there’s really no more property. People are now looking for larger lots with bigger homes, and you can find that at a great value in Preston Hollow. As younger people move in, the area has been forced to try to keep up.
Has being on “Real Housewives” impacted your privacy?
Yes, more people know me when I go out, but that’s part of the fun of being on the show. People are watching you. They want to be a part of your life. I don’t mind that. The way I grew up and the way I’ve lived my whole life has always been in the public. Plus, let’s face it. You really don’t want to come to my house if you were not invited, because there’s a lot of guns.
What did you learn from “Housewives” this season?
I have a long way to go on who to trust and who not to trust, for sure. I was really shocked and blown away by it, honestly.
What TV moments make you proud, and what makes you cringe?
I have so many beautiful moments this season. I’m so proud of being engaged on camera. I love that I will forever get to watch that moment. If he forgets to take the trash out, and
I get pissed, I know I can just watch the scene. I was really proud of the stuff I did in anger management.
The moment I’m not proud of? Being naked while Brandi Redmond was mic’d and being on a tremendous amount of medication before surgery.
In the final episode, you and your estranged mom go to therapy together. What was that like?
I was really proud of the scene with my mom and finding that moment after so many years of angst and hurt and pain. I wish that could’ve happened 40 years ago.
My life is my life, and I’m not ashamed of it. I had to let go of shame in my life. I tried to kill myself, more than once, because of how ashamed I was about my past. For me, doing that on camera was no different than doing that in general. I also feel like I’m not the only person who has a difficult time with their mother.
Since the season wrapped up, what have you been up to?
I’ve been very, very, very busy. There’s not a week that goes by that I don’t do some form of a charity event.
What causes are most important to you right now?
I’m trying to limit myself, as my schedule gets tighter, to the things I really love the most. First would be animals, then my LGBT community, domestic abuse — being a survivor, and child abuse — being a survivor.
What’s the best and worst job at the carnival?
To me, there really wasn’t a worst job. The best thing was all of the strength and speed at which I had to learn about humanity and the art of manipulation. I started working when I was 3. By the time I was 11, I had adults working for me. I made bank. It taught me to be an independent, aggressive, no-bullshit kid, which turned into a strong woman. I dealt with millions of different types of people. Where else do you get that kind of training?

PRESTON HOLLOW’S PASTRY ACE
KRISTEN MASSAD SPECIALIZES IN ALL THINGS SWEET
By ELISSA CHUDWIN / Photos by KATHY TRANPRESTON HOLLOW’S KRISTEN MASSAD might deserve credit for bringing the macaron craze to Dallas when she opened Tart Bakery on Lovers Lane in 2004.
The quaint shop, with vibrant green walls and an array of French-inspired desserts, quickly earned neighbors’ admiration before gourmet cupcakes and macarons were a common delight.
“No one knew what French macarons were,” Massad says. “They’d ask, ‘Is that a hamburger? Are those colorful hamburgers?’ ”
Thanks to Massad’s focus on quality ingredients and classic flavors, Tart quickly grew into a neighborhood hotspot. The long hours were exhausting, especially while raising young children, so Massad sold the bakery in 2013. But her sweet life wouldn’t end there.
The mother of three now devotes her time to developing recipes for restaurants, styling food products and blogging, all while launching Joy + Oliver. The small batch confection company sells homemade caramels, flavors such as sea salt, chocolate swirl, mocha swirl,
FOODmarshmallow swirl and peppermint, on Etsy.
“I knew I could do what I’m doing now and open something later,” she says.
Massad perfected her craft at the French Culinary Institute in New York City before returning to Dallas’ rising restaurant scene. A stint at The Mansion Restaurant’s pastry department solidified her interest in the sweet side of the business.
“It’s definitely a science,” she says. “It’s more exact.”
That dedication to precision may be genetic, because even her 5- and 7-year-old daughters have a knack for baking. The oldest sibling already mastered banana bread and cinnamon sugar doughnuts, and breakfast items happen to be Massad’s favorites.
“I love desserts,” she laughs. “When am I going to get sick of it? I want to know.”

BETTER KNOW A NEIGHBOR
NORAH MEIER: Pet rescuer
NORAH MEIER thinks the number of abandoned pets in our city is unacceptable, so she’s the first to scoop up any stray pups she spots on the side of the road. The Preston Hollow neighbor fosters animals in need, volunteers with Education and Animal Rescue Society and runs the Facebook group Dallas Strays and Rescues.
When did you start rescuing dogs?
When I graduated from SMU in 2006, I started my first job in sales for a trucking company on the south side of Dallas. Every day, on the way to work, I would see stray dogs everywhere — dead on the side of the road, litters of puppies run over, dogs walking around with broken legs.
One day, there were two dogs on the side of the road, and nobody was stopping. I stopped the car, grabbed the two dogs and put them in the car.
Then it started the whole process of “how do I not know what’s happening in our city?” I thought if I don’t know, other people don’t know.
How bad is the stray animal problem in Dallas?
In Dallas-Fort Worth alone, we euthanize 551 animals a day. The average age is 18 months old. There’s an estimated 8,700 strays living on the streets in Dallas County, and that’s in a very concentrated area, too.
Where all do you volunteer?
I started the Facebook group Dallas Strays and Rescues. That was a message board system to help people find a pet or adopt a pet. Up until two years ago, I was doing it all independently. Along the way, I met a ton of people. I met Kimberly, the president of the Education and Animal Rescue Society. Now I’m the volunteer coordinator and social media coordinator.
When the tornado hit in Rowlett, I started a search-and-rescue group. We went out there for three days, dug animals out from rubble and reunited them with their families.
What’s the hardest part of fostering? The hardest part for me is giving them the grace period to acclimate and calm down. A lot of these dogs — you don’t know what they’ve been through.
Have you had any fosters that have been hard to give up?
Cannoli was one that I loved more than anything. He’s a Baylor therapy dog. We raised so much money. He got so much attention on social media. He’s a big ole 100-pound pit bull, but a lap dog. He’s the most special one that I didn’t want to let go.
How do you pick the pups’ names?
I love naming dogs after food. I’ve got a whole list of names. I’m just waiting to get some little dogs for Sushi and Wasabi.
SIMPLE TRUTH
Episcopal School of Dallas owns Wolf Run Ranch, a 300acre property near Anna, Texas, for students to explore.
Episcopal School of Dallas
Enrollment: 1,145
Year Established: 1974
Tuition: $16,300$28,620
THE FIRST DAY of class in Episcopal School of Dallas’ history wasn’t spent indoors.
“We didn’t start by ringing a bell and coming into a classroom in 1974,” says Eddie Eason, director of outdoor education. Instead, faculty took students to Galveston to explore nature.
Outdoor education is a vital component of ESD’s curriculum. It’s a tradition for eighth-graders to start the school year in Colorado, where they rock climb and hike. Students frequent Wolf Run, a 300-acre ranch near Anna, Texas, for camping trips and archaeological expeditions.
“To me, the ranch is just another campus,” Eason says. “It doesn’t define our outdoor program.”
He guides students while they learn to adapt to adverse weather, pitch a tent and simply socialize without their cellphones, which he collects as soon as they arrive.
“Especially in this day and age, when this helicopter parenting thing is out of control, it helps a lot of them to realize how self-reliant they can really be,” he says. Eason makes sure ESD’s four tenets — daily worship, community, ethical decision-making and service — are incorporated into the program. He’s adamant that students are respectful to each other and nature, and starts every day with a prayer.
“I get to take kids out of the hustle and bustle out of their everyday lives, and take them outdoors, whether it’s the ranch or a forest or a state park,” he says. “I just get to pass off my love of the outdoors to them.”

TOMMY LEE JONES
ST. MARK’S SCHOOL OF TEXAS CLASS OF 1965
What He’s Up to Now:
Tommy Lee Jones isn’t Hollywood’s friendliest face. But what the four-time Academy Award winner lacks in warmth, he compensates for in ambition. He’s starring in the action film “Just Getting Started,” slated for release Dec. 8. Now he’s filming the science fiction flick “Ad Astra” with Brad Pitt and was cast in “Stoner,” based on the 1965 novel.
Three Things to Know
1
Born in West Texas, Jones’ parents relocated to Benghazi to work in oil fields when he was a teenager. Jones didn’t want to leave the country, so he moved to Dallas to attend St. Mark’s, where he juggled football, soccer and theater productions.
2
He’s an Ivy Leaguer. The English major continued his football career and fine-tuned his acting skills at Harvard. Oh, and he was Al Gore’s roommate for four years. No big deal.
3
In an interview with Meryl Streep, Jones said his first performance was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in second grade. He was Sneezy and claims he can still sneeze on command.

AFTER THE SCANDAL
Finding redemption after being a part of SMU’s ‘death penalty’ football team
by WILL MADDOX BY DANNY FULGENCIOHe was a member of Southern Methodist University’s team in the mid-1980s that went from being nationally ranked to receiving the “death penalty,” when the NCAA canceled its 1987 season. In many ways, the team never recovered, but the moment that took what Blewett loved most put him on a path of personal redemption that would change his future.
Blewett wrote a book about his experience on that fated team called “Pony Trap.” In it, he describes SMU football as a name that once inspired fear in its rivals. With nationally ranked teams, top-ranked recruits and a bevy of players heading to the NFL, they were a force.
According to Blewett, and an ESPN “30 for 30” documentary, it was difficult for any Division I football program to land elite recruits without illegally paying the players on the side at the time. Most of the payments were small contributions for food or transportation, but there were more sizable gifts being passed under tables as well.
The NCAA tried to crack down on these illegal payments, but it needed to tread lightly, as the organization received its power from the very universities it was tasked to police. If the NCAA wanted to make an example of a school that was cheating, SMU was the perfect candidate. It was a smaller school, lacking the power of more established entities, but also was surprisingly successful on the field, rivaling established football schools such as the University of Texas in Austin.
When the NCAA communicated with a couple disgruntled former SMU football players who had been paid, (but not enough to keep quiet), the NCAA found its smoking gun.
“It was the perfect storm,” Blewett says.
The result was swift and hefty. NCAA canceled SMU’s season in 1987, the only time that has ever happened to a university, despite other cheating scandals. The NCAA banned SMU from having home games in 1988, and the school voluntarily suspended itself for that season as well. No one could have predicted the hurt. The program never reached the same level of success again, though they have six wins this year and are eligible for a post-season bowl game.
“It’s zombie penalty,” Blewett says. “Here we are, 25 years later, and it’s still out there.”
Blewett says he was not one of the paid players, and was given the option to transfer to another school to continue his college football career, but decided to stay at SMU to finish his degree and double major in philosophy and finance. Though the weeks after the penalty left him despondent and aimless.
Decades later, Blewett was raising his children (he now has seven) with his wife when he became aware of the “30 for 30” documentary
made in 2010 by ESPN about the SMU cheating scandal. Blewett wasn’t part of the documentary (he never called the director back, wary of the media after his college years), and was not engaged with the university or team at the time. But his daughter saw the film and had questions.
“I heard something bad happened there. Did you do anything wrong?” she asked.
The question planted a pit in his stomach that began to grow, inspiring him to seek redemption in a familiar place. He decided he would get back in shape, and attempt to use his remaining football eligibility to play for his alma mater. He only played two years in the 1980s, and if he got approval from the NCAA and SMU, he could play. He wanted to prove to himself and his family that he could do it, and while he knew that a 40-year-old man probably couldn’t compete for an entire season with college athletes, he saw a higher purpose.
In Blewett’s eyes, SMU never owned up to their sins and accepted responsibility, instead carrying on like it never happened, shunning the players involved and trying to outrun the problem.
“SMU needs to have a cathartic moment,” he says. “They need to say, ‘Here’s what we did wrong, please forgive us of our sins and let’s start over.’ ”
Blewett thought making the team would atone the university, both rectifying the past and symbolically welcoming a generation of players who wanted to reconnect with their old university.
Blewett worked for months and was in the best shape of his life, but in the end was not given an opportunity to play by the coach. He understood that he would be a distraction to a team trying to win games; however, he was disappointed. But there was a silver lining.
“There is nothing sad about this at all,” he says. “Throughout the process, I reengaged with friends, reengaged with the university and reengaged with my physicality.”
The experience led him to write his book, which tells the story from the players’ perspective. He has since run for city council and has plans for more books in the future.
“When you try these things, even when you fail, you learn things, and it makes you a better person,” he says. “I don’t have the fear of putting myself out there anymore.”
These days, Blewett works in real estate, has seven children and stays busy volunteering at SMU with the Lettermen’s Association, where he is on the board as the reunion officer.
He turned what could have been a shameful chapter into a transformative moment, and doesn’t regret any part of it.
“I would go back to SMU again, even knowing all the stuff we went through,” he says. “It’s crazy when I say it out loud, but it’s true.”
David Blewett could have let the most infamous moment in college football ruin the rest of his life, but he didn’t.
“Here we are, 25 years later, and it’s still out there.”
TRAVEL
LIVING LIKE A LOCAL, IN ANOTHER PART OF THE WORLD
This wayfaring neighbor travels on his own terms
BY ELISSA CHUDWINTIME TO ROME
EVEN THE MOST MENACING circumstances didn’t quell Bill Boyd’s wanderlust.
By 22 years old, Boyd led tour groups throughout the Caribbean, South America and Europe for the travel incentive company Top Value Enterprises.
“I stayed on the road for a year and eight months,” the Hillcrest Forest neighbor says. “If I was home for a month, that’d be unusual.”
Boyd never left the country, much less owned a passport, before he was hired. Guiding hundreds of people through unfamiliar cities was daunting, but the mishaps are some of Boyd’s favorite tales to tell.
On a trip to Jamaica, he was in charge of 250 tourists, who piled into busses headed from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios. A torrential downpour trapped the vehicles on a flooding road during the two-hour ride. The bridge they needed to cross was submerged underwater.
Boyd panicked.
“It’s supposed to be their holiday,” Boyd says. “It’s supposed to be their bright, sunshine-y vacation.”
Boyd jumped out of the bus and waved a $100 bill at a passing beer truck. He bribed the
driver to chain the busses together and pull them to the nearest hotel.
No one had their luggage, and some went without necessary medications until the weather improved.
“I had nightmares about it for months,” he says.
The high-stress environment wasn’t a deterrent for Boyd, who later opened his own agency and incentive company, Sunbelt Motivation and Travel. He retired from the business in 2016.
Now Boyd and his partner, Joe Cortina, meander across continents on their own terms. Their upcoming itinerary includes trips to Rome, Athens and New Zealand. When they’re not overseas, the couple escapes the Texas heat at their vacation house in beach-front San Diego.
“Now I can see the world the way I want to see it,” he says.
Boyd documents every place he’s explored in a 6-inch binder, but there’s still a few on his to-see list, like Bhutan and Nepal. He’s contemplated taking the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow through eastern Russia, but he “never built up the courage to go on an eight-day train ride,” he says.
The couple has favorites they return to constantly, too. Cortina visits Paris yearly, while Boyd’s heart belongs to Rome.
“It’s the antiquity of Rome combined with the flare of the people,” he says. “They exude class. They’re not strutting. They’re not arrogant. They’re stylish.”

That nip in the air means winter has made its arrival. Here are some easy ways to keep in good spirits during the dark months:
1. Get grounded — Reduce the rushing. Draw your energy inward.
2. Feed your soul — See what foods are in season. This season is all about hearty, nutritious and warm foods.
3. Find your rhythm — Sticking to meal and bedtimes help create balance and will ground you.
4. Don’t lose your glow — Dry skin is all too common, so break out the moisturizer.
5. Treat yourself — Self massage will soothe the lingering stress. Start with the soles of your feet and work up to your head. Now you’re ready to embody the season.
