Skip Hollandsworth lives a life of crime without ever breaking a law. The Texas Monthly executive editor and author has made a career in revealing the lives of the state’s most eccentric and violent offenders. His article, “Midnight in the Garden of East Texas,” about a charismatic funeral director who murders an elderly woman, hit the big screen as “Bernie” starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. His latest book, “The Midnight Assassin,” highlights a 19th-century serial killer who slayed servant girls and socialites in Austin. But at home in Preston Hollow, he’s the crotchety neighbor who wishes the speeding teenagers would slow down.
Did you ever imagine that your career would revolve around crime?
Never. It remains a mystery to me why I decided to write crime stories. I am the son of a minister. I had no dark side to my personality. I was just this normal white bread guy. Then, one day, I read a story about a talented man who had all these artistic qualities. He had been arrested for picking up prostitutes in South Dallas, shooting them in the back of the head and cutting out their eyeballs so perfectly that when he shut their eyes, you couldn’t tell they were missing. I could just not stop thinking about this man how such a talented, accomplished person would have this depraved part of him that would make him step over the line and do something unfathomable. “How does a man get to the place in his life where he wants to cut out the eyeballs of women and keep them?” I went on a yearlong journey to try to discover his life and what happened that made him act this way. I ended up, at one point, taking my stepdaughter, Hailey, to an abandoned house that he once owned, and we broke in to see what we could find.
What intrigues you about crime?
I think what intrigues me about it is how people who seem to live normal lives suddenly and inexplicably step over this invisible line into doing things they probably couldn’t even imagine themselves doing. How does someone get to the point where they want to murder a loved one or rob a bank or go on a serial killing spree? It’s a source of never-ending fascination to me.
Of all the stories you’ve done, what has shocked you the most?
Well, it’s hard to beat a guy who cuts out eyeballs. The rich guy in Houston that had his wife shot in front of their children. A lot of domestic murders I don’t get — why a husband would go to such extremes.
Have you found any answers?
No. That’s why I keep my job. There’s no answer yet.
How did you learn “Murder in the Garden of East
Texas” would become a movie?
The phone rang, and he said, “This is Richard Linklater.” I knew who that was, but I thought it was a joke. He said he wanted to turn this article into a movie. I went, “Well, go for it.” We went to the trial of Bernie. We wrote a screenplay. He actually wrote most of it. It sat on a shelf for 10 years, because producers and studios kept going, “A gay funeral home director shooting an elderly woman four times in the back. A crazy district attorney who is obsessed with bringing him down. This story is too over the top.” They didn’t think it was really real, but every bit of that movie was real.
What crime story has been the hardest to shake?
It’s the one I wrote that led to the book, “The Midnight Assassin.” That’s the story I’ve obsessed about since 1998, so nearly 20 years. It’s the story of Austin in 1885 just as it was transforming itself into a glittery, gilded-age city. Suddenly, the bodies of women were showing up in backyards, mutilated and murdered. Axed to death. Dagger marks up and down their bodies. Ice picks driven through their ears. It was a tale that had been lost to history. I stumbled across the story and thought, “How in the world did this emerge?” There’s a mystery at the end, and I’m still obsessed with figuring out what happened and who did it.
Was that your favorite piece that you wrote?
My favorite story was one that occurred two blocks from here. In 1973, a boy, John McClamrock, at Hillcrest High School was in a football accident and became a quadriplegic. Instead of being taken to an institution to live out his days and die, his mother took him home and took care of him for the next 33 years. I thought this is a story about courage and loyalty and duty — the ability to make a life out of what seemed to be nothing.
How was this story different from the rest?
What drew to me the story was that it was about a normal man who decided not to give up and to make something of his life. It was about trying to find the secret of how to live a good

life, despite every obstacle thrown in your way. That’s the total opposite of a murder story. This is a story of goodness and achievement.
What was growing up in Wichita Falls as a preacher’s kid like?
My father was a minister who had Presbyterian churches in North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas. For mystical reasons, he went from Lexington, Ky., to barren Wichita Falls, Texas and thought he had found the promised land. This is a man who grew up in the Smoky Mountains. He passed that love onto me.
Wichita Falls is full of really fascinating characters from rich, eccentric oilmen to sports stars to funny housewives. I got to watch it firsthand, because I was living in a preacher’s house where people came to talk to my dad. My sisters and I would quietly sneak down the hall to pick up the conversations he was having. So that’s what journalism is. You pick up conversations. You pick up the truths of people’s lives.
Did you always want to be a journalist?
I went to college on a music scholarship. I was the Yo Yo Ma of Wichita Falls, thinking I was really special. Then I got to TCU in the music department and saw people who had been practicing hard. I was talented, but I didn’t really practice much.
When did you move to the neighborhood?
I came to Preston Hollow in 1992 and stayed. I first came into an apartment on Bandera in the Carlton House. Then I moved to Norway, and the last few years I’ve lived here on Glendora. I’m not very geographically ambitious.
When you’re not engrossed in crime, what do you do?
I’m living the life of a suburban schlub. I watch TV, and I watch movies, and I go out to dinner. The time is beginning to come where I can lay in bed with my grandchildren and tell them stories. Sort of my favorite thing to do in life is make up ghost stories for children. They don’t take on the violent level that my real stories do. I used to go to Preston Hollow Elementary when my youngest daughter, Tyler, was there. I
made up an entire series of tales about people who lived in the basement at Preston Hollow Elementary. I thought they were riveting, educational, entertaining, helped children with their imaginations. Then one parent had her child removed from the class, because I was causing too much anger.
What do you love and hate about the neighborhood? What I like most about the neighborhood is talking to people on the street when we walk our dogs. What I like least is the property taxes that keep going up and up and, sadly, up. There used to be a time when I was part of the new Preston Hollow crowd, and now I’m one of the old coots.
What would you change about Preston Hollow? This sounds so ridiculous because of my past life, but I’d like for the young teenagers to stop driving so fast. The little cute children that have grown up on the street are now teenagers in sports cars. It is a calamitous life to walk outside into your front yard not knowing what is going to come racing past you.
What are your favorite neighborhood spots? I like anything in the Preston Royal section, because part of my aging process is not wanting to drive anywhere longer than five minutes. So Preston Royal is sort of this glamorous destination for me in life. I don’t really go to an office, so it’s nice to go to a restaurant, even if it is only five minutes away.
If you could hide a body anywhere in Preston Hollow, where would it be?
I would hide it in the alley behind Amegy Bank on Northwest Highway, because there’s a lot of traffic there. There’s probably no security cameras. No one would notice what you’re doing. Or you could dump it off as you drive by Edgemere Park at sunset.
Have you thought about this before? Never.
Are you sure?
I’m positive.

THE PRESSURE IS ON
LOVERS SEAFOOD AND MARKET HAS ALL THE MAKINGS OF SUCCESS
By ELISSA CHUDWIN / Photos by KATHY TRAN
AARON STAUDENMAIER ’s first culinary crash course happened in the cover of darkness at a North Dakota truck stop.
The Lovers Seafood and Market executive chef landed a dishwashing job at Flying J’s as a teen, where he helped man the kitchen until the early morning.
One night, 15 minutes before bar rush, the frazzled cook quit without warning. Announcing “I don’t want to do this today,” he hurried out of the truck stop.
Staudenmaier panicked. The 14-year-old’s culinary skills didn’t include making much more than a bowl of cereal. With 250 truck drivers impatiently waiting for a quick meal, “the choice was learn to cook or die,” he laughs.
Staudenmaier scrambled to feed his temperamental customers, but he thrived in the chaos.
“There’s a piece of that day in every day in the kitchen,” he says. “It’s the same excitement.
It’s the same level of can you do this, pushing yourself to get through it.”
Launching Lovers Seafood and Market has been Staudenmaier’s most demanding endeavor to date, he says, even after stints at The Mansion at Turtle Creek and Abacus. Staudenmaier resigned as executive chef of the luxury private club Boot Ranch in the Hill Country to open the eatery with Shinsei founders Lynae Fearing and Tracy Rathbun. The two women are Dallas culinary royalty: Fearing was married to celeb chef Dean Fearing, while Rathbun is the wife of fourtime James Beard nominee Kent Rathbun. Along with Staudenmaier, they tagged in Max Heidenreich, another Abacus alumni, as general manager.
When the celebrated foodies announced their plans to revamp the former Rex’s Seafood Market space in February, their reputations began to precede them.

Thailand, Norway and New Zealand within 48 hours. Some options only make an appearance once a year. Staudenmaier was so excited when Copper River salmon arrived that he waltzed with one to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”
“We eat the hell out of them while they’re here, and then we wait until next year,” he says.
The inconsistency gives Staudenmaier room for creativity, and it adds just the right amount of the pressure he craves.
“One of the challenges of dealing with people at that level is the expectation becomes your greatest enemy,” Staudenmaier says. “You can’t just open a restaurant that’s pretty good. You have to open a restaurant as good or better than anything you’ve ever done.”
Modeled after New England seafood shacks, the Lovers Lane restaurant mixes popular faire — like Maine-style lobster rolls and salmon cakes — with more modern flavors like uni.
“There’s a line between fun and interesting and unique and not wanting to scare the hell out of people,” Staudenmaier says.
He relies on seafood brokers across the globe for its endlessly rotating menu. Fish is shipped to the eatery from

BETTER KNOW A NEIGHBOR
MARTY RENDLEMAN Star-maker
Interview by ELISSA CHUDWIN / Portrait by DANNY FULGENCIO
BEFORE MARTY RENDLEMAN was a Sunday school teacher, the Preston Hollow neighbor helped young superstars, including LeAnn Rimes, score major label recording contracts. She chronicled her career as an artist manager in the book “Singing Your Way to Stardom.”
How did you end up in the music industry?
I was bringing celebrities into the Walt Garrison Rodeo. The first one who came to me and asked if I would manage was Courtney Gibbs. She was Miss Fort Worth, Miss Texas, Miss USA.
My talent, if I have one, is recognizing talent. I could hear a young person and know if they had it or not. Then, having the business degree, I knew what to do next. It’s interesting that LeAnn Rimes, Kristy Lee and Mikaila — two in country and one in pop — I was able to get major label recording contracts for. That was all but impossible.
How did you meet LeAnn Rimes?
This guy in Arlington called me one morning and said, “I just heard the most amazing voice I’ve ever heard in my life at Johnnie High’s
Country Music Revue.”
I said, “How old is this singer?” He said 9. I almost hung up on him.
The first time we ever booked her for anything was the “National Anthem.” I swear by this; I built three careers on the “National Anthem.” If you can sing that, I can get you in front of everybody who is anybody in this city.
Did you know your career would be working with teenagers?
Once you do, the word gets out. I’ve got a basket filled with CDs and headshots and whatever of kids. “OK, make my baby a star.” I always tried to be nice. There was only one time I sent it back and said, “I think you need to give this idea up.” I kept the best and the worst, and it was awful. A grandmother could not think this was good.
When did you call it quits?
It wasn’t a decision that I one day said, “I’m through. I’m retiring.” I was older. I started teaching a Sunday school class and spending more time with my kids and grandkids.

NORTHPARK’S GRAND OPENING
By ELISSA CHUDWIN
WHEN NORTHPARK CENTER opened its doors in 1965, it was the largest climate-controlled shopping center in the nation. Dallas developer Raymond D. Nasher leased a 97-acre cotton field to bring the sleek shopping center to fruition. Its opening day was equal parts celebration and show, with the Richardson and Wilmer-Hutchins high school bands performing in a parade that snaked its way through the luxury center with great fanfare. NorthPark Center celebrated its 52nd birthday in August. In a time when many shopping malls are in perile, it continues to shine with more than $1 billion in sales every year.

A TOUCH OF TUSCANY
A Mediterranean escape keeps this couple in the Hollow
By ELISSA CHUDWIN / Photos by DAN PIASSICK
Even though Mary and Kirk Oliver’s careers were located 1,500 miles away, they couldn’t fathom selling their Preston Hollow home.
The Mediterranean-style house is elegant yet inviting, and helped dissuade the couple from relocating to Philadelphia and buying a piece of cinematic history.
When Kirk accepted an East Coast job offer, the Ardrosson Estate of Villanova, Penn., was on the market. The couple contemplated purchasing a portion of the property that inspired the 1941 Academy Award winner “The Philadelphia Story.”
They weren’t ready to part with their Italian-inspired Dallas house, Mary says, so they bought a condo in Philly instead. The family still spends occasional weekends and holidays in Dallas, where they’ll soon retire.
Constructed in 2002, the 7,362-square-foot residence was inspired by another neighborhood home on Strait Lane. The house, built for a charity raffle, was featured in Southern Accents magazine.
Then, the Olivers lived in New York. Mary was so reluctant to leave her Westchester residence that Kirk promised he’d let her design any house she wanted as a consolation prize. The Strait Lane home’s staircase, natural light and warm colors immediately caught her affection.
“I never imagined living in a Mediterranean home,” Mary says. “I never imagined living in the South. We said if we were going to be down here, let’s do something we’ve never done.”
She enlisted Dallas architect Richard Davis and interior designer Margaret Chambers to perfect the Italian-style home with a myriad of windows, sweeping archways and antique furniture.
“We wanted a lot of light,” Mary says. “We wanted it to be stylish but not overdone.”
Chambers was tasked with decorating spaces that stayed in line with the Tuscan theme without being too stuffy. She handpicked every item in the house, from Latin manuscripts lining the walls to the dishes and silver.
In 15 years, they haven’t changed a thing, Mary says.
“The home has staying power.”
Because the Olivers’ house was brand new, interior designer Margaret Chambers wanted it to feel warm and authentic. “When you look at a new house, it doesn’t have a soul like many old houses do,” she says. To combat that, she mixed 18th and 19th-century antique furniture with modern pieces. “Everything being so new, it just added so much character and warmth,” she says. “I just like the way it all came together as a group. It all looks like it belongs together.”
Mary and Kirk are both the youngest of seven children, so their house is constantly crowded with family and friends. “You walked in the house, and you felt like you were welcome,” Mary remembers. They wanted their three kids to have the same experience, so the house can fit more than a hundred guests comfortably. The Olivers hosted holiday parties, school events and their daughter’s post-wedding brunch at the house.
24 advocatemag.com
All of the tile in the house was laid by hand, and the archways are based on a home on Strait Lane highlighted in Southern Accents magazine. “The materials and colors used are what you would find in Italy,” Chambers says. “We treated the inside to the outside. There’s so much attention to moldings and fireplace mantles, which would be similar to what you’d find in Italy.”

CARY DEUBER’S NAME IS NOW SYNONYMOUS WITH DALLAS AS A WINESWIRLING MEMBER OF THE LOCAL “REAL HOUSEWIVES” FRANCHISE.
And while the East Coast native will always love her adopted city, it’s a completely different country she seeks when she wants respite from the “reality” world.
“The first time I went to Switzerland I was in awe of the country’s beauty and serenity,” says Deuber. “The mountains and nature just radiate beauty and peace.”
It’s been a constant since she met her husband, luxury shopaholic Dr. Mark Deuber, who was born and raised in the mountain-rich land of chocolate and watches. He’s made sure his children, who have dual citizenship, have plenty of

exposure to his native land. They even named their youngest daughter Zuri, the Swiss German word for Zürich.
“Our kids are lucky enough to go to camp there,” Deuber says. “They are Swiss because of their father and are able to go to a camp for kids of expats through the Organization of the Swiss Abroad.”
In addition to camp, the Deubers spend two-to-six weeks in and around Zürich, the nation’s largest city. They’ve talked about buying a house among the mountainous peaks, most famously on the show after a particularly vicious girls’ weekend away. “You know, I’m thinking after my awesome girls’ trip to Austin, that maybe we do need to leave the country,” Deuber said with her signature snark.
But the Preston Hollow couple has yet to make a residential purchase overseas, partially because they don’t want to give up the indulgent experience at the Hotel Baur au Lac, a 173-year-old property with sweeping views of the Alps and Lake Zürich where rooms fetch up to $1,000 a night.
“I stayed there for a week by myself
while I took a Swiss German language immersion class,” Deuber says. “I was pregnant at the time and felt perfectly safe and cared for.”
It’s an outdoorsy paradise. Mark Twain once said “Switzerland would be a mighty big place if it were ironed flat.” But the fact that it isn’t is what draws in visitors, who jump at the chance to hike or ride up the rocky paths for breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks.
Avoid the tourist traps by taking the train out of the city center, where the

Back-to-School and busier schedules. Fall into Autumn Stress-free with these tips:
· Arrive at the office 10 minutes early. The sun rises later; get to work earlier for extra time to adjust to a new schedule.
· De-Clutter your workspace. Give yourself a visual clean plate, trash old files and papers on your desk.
· Invest in what brings you joy at work. Identify projects you love most and maximize those parts of your job. Revamp your daily routine. Take care of your body. Stand up, move around and workout.
· Be sure to have water and a piece of dark chocolate on hand for when those deep breaths won’t suffice.
