Dallas’ 311 app now has a bike share category for all your

complaints

No one can accuse the City of Dallas of not keeping up with the times, as its 311 app now has a way to report bikeshare clutter. The app allows you to easily communicate with the city about nuisances in the neighborhood. The new technology makes it pretty clear how the city views errant rental bikes. When you download the app and make a new report, “Bike Share” is an option under “Streets and Signs,” next to options such as “Illegal Sign” and “Street Obstruction.”

School news: Franklin Middle School receives IB designation

Franklin Middle School is the second Preston Hollow public school to receive its International Baccalaureate designation. As an IB World School, Franklin is officially part of a prestigious global program that focuses on students’ critical thinking and personal development.

DISH closes after a threeyear neighborhood stint

Preston Hollow already is mourning the loss of another eatery. DISH is our neighborhood’s first restaurant casualty this year. Owner Tim McEneny cited “unresolvable concerns with our building and location” as the reason for its sudden closure.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the many guests that have dined at DISH Preston Hollow over the years, and we look forward to seeing friends of the restaurant at our other concepts,” McEneny said in a press release.

HOLLYWOOD NOBODY

This Hillcrest grad has dozens of film and TV credits, having shared the screen with Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts 

Q & A
advocatemag.com 7
Interview by EMILY CHARRIER / Photo by BILL CASS PHOTOGRAPHY

You have definitely seen Nancy Linehan Charles perform, maybe even in your favorite television show or movie. Her credits are too numerous to list, from iconic television like “Seinfeld,” “The West Wing” or “Criminal Minds,” to Hollywood blockbusters like “Minority Report” and “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Her roles are small, but her work is constant — no small feat for an actor. At 75, this 1961 Hillcrest graduate is not slowing down anytime soon. She launched a Shakespearean flash mob, which breaks out the Bard’s work in elevators and, once, the Los Angeles County Jail after the troupe got arrested during a protest. “We were in there for 12 hours or so with nothing to do. So we did Shakespeare in jail, thank you very much. I got a standing ovation. The people in there were so bored I think they’d have given us a standing ovation for reading the yellow pages.”

What are your most prominent memories of growing up in Preston Hollow?

I remember Saturday movies at the Inwood and malted milks at the country club pharmacy. We used to go to the movies every single Saturday. It was a good childhood. We also went to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, and I liked it for the social aspect more than the religion. It was a really wonderful community with a lot of young people.

Did you start your acting career at Hillcrest?

I remember the day that I actually got into this lifelong love affair with acting and with Shakespeare. I was at Dallas Theater Center, and they were in company with “Hamlet.” I didn’t know Shakespeare at all, but I fell in love with the language right there. I can tell you what I was wearing, every detail. That was it; I decided I wanted to be an actor. And then I started doing theater at Hillcrest.

What drew you to the craft?

I think I craved attention. Once I got into it, I just loved the process of becoming somebody else. Even to this day, when I’m doing a role, I will walk around the house and do all the work I have to do, like wash the dishes, as the character.

Did you have a breakout role that helped propel your career?

Not really. I did a lot of voiceover work at first. I did some commercials in New York, but nothing too major. It wasn’t until I moved to LA that things took off, and I realized I was going to do this for the next 25 years.

You have done a little bit of everything, from film to television to theater. Do you have a first love in acting? A medium you prefer most?

If I could make as good a living at theater as I do in film and television, I would probably do it full time. But I don’t know anyone who makes a full-time living on theater, which is sad. I am thankful for television. It’s how I pay the rent.

What is it like working with America’s most famous directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg?

It’s special. Spielberg is a real actor’s director. He sets a good tone for the set. But unless you’re playing a major role, Spielberg doesn’t give you a full script. So you have to fill in some blanks. In “Minority Report,” I played the bad guy’s wife. I knew she was rich. I knew she really loved her husband. You just hope they don’t cut everything.

Do you ever get starstruck?

You know, I don’t. I so admire the work of Tom Hanks, particularly, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. I just thought he was one of the most incredible actors. But I’ve never been one to get autographs or pictures.

What type of roles do you love playing most?

I love strong women. Ironically, I just played a homeless woman on “Better Things,” the Louis CK production. But I love strong women, and I’m pretty good at it. I’ve played a lot of lawyers and judges.

Consistently working for 30-plus years as an actor is rare. What’s your secret?

I will tell you. The secret is that you learn not to take auditions personally. I don’t believe I ever do a bad audition anymore. I’m just a red dress, and they’re looking for a blue dress. Mostly, as a person, I think wherever my feet are, that’s where I am supposed to be.

What are the best and worst things about being a professional actor?

The best thing, this is really sad to say, is when people see you on television. People say, “Oh, I saw you on blah blah,” and that feels good. The downside of that is it’s very hard to plan stuff. You have to be available for auditions if you want to make a living.

What do you have coming up that people can see you in?

I’m on “Life in Pieces” on Jan. 18. I’m pinned for a role in “Young Sheldon,” but I don’t know when it airs.

Do you ever come back to Preston Hollow? If so, has it changed drastically from what you remember?

I don’t get back to Dallas too much, and I have some great friends there. I don’t see them enough. You know what’s different about Dallas? I cannot believe those huge houses. I went to one. I swear you could fit the country of Yemen in this one house.

FLOWER CHILD’S TRENDY TAKE ON THE FAST-CASUAL SCENE

WITH ITS RETRO DÉCOR and psychedelic mural, Flower Child has the aesthetic of a mom-andpop shop, even though the fast-casual chain was born in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Inwood Village restaurant is the brainchild of Fox Restaurant Concepts, the creator behind more than 30 restaurants across the Southwest. CEO Sam Fox capitalized on clean eating trends with neighborhood favorite True Food Kitchen — which he sold in 2016 — and envisioned a similar concept with faster service in Flower Child.

When it opened its first Arizona location in 2015, it was an instant hit.

“We felt like we’d captured lightning in

a bottle,” Fox told Forbes in an interview that year.

It didn’t take the restaurant long to land on Lovers Lane, where neighbors now stop by after a workout and families enjoy dinner together.

The customizable menu, featuring gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options, separates the chain from its competition, says spokeswoman Tracy McGinnis. Everything is made from scratch, and leftover fruits and vegetables are used to make juice.

“We want to make sure our menu has something to appeal to anyone,” she says. 5450 W. Lovers Lane / iamaflowerchild.com

WHAT TO TRY:

The Mother Earth bowl with ancient grains, sweet potatoes and portabello mushrooms is the most popular item, spokeswoman Tracy McGinnis says. The avocado hummus and Vietnamese crunch salad also are in high demand.

PRINCIPAL CAROL WALSH is giving St. Rita Catholic School’s curriculum a makeover — one that may benefit the lowest and highest performing students.

Walsh is new to St. Rita, although the neighborhood school feels familiar to her. She was at the helm of St. Cecilia Catholic School in Houston, with similar demographics, for a decade.

Because of Walsh, teachers are integrating technology in the classroom that helps students learn at their own pace. Computer activities, with software that measures achievement, are incorporated into daily lessons. All students soon will have their own tablets.

Walsh is a staunch advocate for differentiated instruction, a teaching framework that tailors lessons to each student’s capabilities, since she got her start in California schools.

“It’s just a completely different way of learning,” she says.

Next school year, the campus also will include a student success center. It’s geared toward students who need more support, including gifted students seeking additional challenges.

“They’ll be able to go in when they need but transition back when they receive help,” assistant principal Mike Vickson says. ELISSA CHUDWIN

BILL GART: Full-time volunteer

BILL GART may be our neighborhood’s busiest retiree. He left his career in the retail and wholesale business in 1994, but now the 87-year-old Army veteran volunteers with the Senior Affairs Commission, among other philanthropic endeavors. “I don’t let any grass grow under my feet,” he says.

How did you start volunteering?

When Lee Kleinman got voted in as councilman for District 11, he asked me if I would like to be on the Senior Affairs Commission. Until then, I didn’t know what this type of volunteering was. Four years ago, I took over housing. It bothered me that the people who qualified [for home repair] were falling through the cracks. I’ll never forget it. This one lady said, “Well, that’s the system.” I said, “Well, I’ll

tell you what we’re going to do. We’re going to change the system.” This past fiscal year, nobody fell through the cracks. That was a major accomplishment for me.

How much time do you dedicate to the commission?

I have a great job. I have meetings about meetings. I’m working about 25 hours a week or more, depending on the amount of meetings I have. If you’re going to do it properly and you’re going to be able to accomplish something, you’ve got to put your heart and soul in it. I always joke it’s the job I’m retired to.

I can’t speak enough about the people who have been doing this for 40, 50 years. If I was a lot younger — and I’m not political — but I think I would’ve run for City Council, because you can really get things done.

If you were hypothetically on Dallas City Council, what are three things on your to-do list?

I’d be very, very concerned about the homeless. I’d be very, very concerned about affordable housing. The third thing would be there’s so many things. Transportation would be another area I think I would be focused on.

What else are you up to?

My homeowner’s association has been collecting food and taking it to Vickery Meadow. Three years ago, we started collecting clothes. As I go around to homes, I always say to somebody, “Can you use clothes?” We have 50 or 60 huge bags that our association donates. I have an idea, but it’s in its bare infancy. I want to get the various crime watch committees together to donate food. I figure if we can raise 8 to 10,000 pounds of food, what can we do with 30 or 40 crime watch groups?

SOCIETY

THE SECRET LIFE OF PRESTON HOLLOW SOCIAL CLUBS

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S ELITE ORGANIZATIONS

WITH ITS ABUNDANCE of service organizations and high-profile charity events, our neighborhood sometimes feels like the nucleus of Dallas high society.

Some of these organizations are private and require current members’ nominations. Their selective tendencies are often the subject of scrutiny.

“Dallas society loves doers – people who make it in competition,” D Magazine’s A.C. Greene wrote in “Social Climber’s Handbook,” published in 1976. “The president of Southern Methodist University is seldom given entree to Dallas society; a golfer who shoots a consistent 70 has a much better chance. If he wants in. Dallas society, like most creatures, likes what likes it.”

The Dallas Women’s Club, which opened its elaborate clubhouse on Park Lane in 1966, is equal parts exclusive and elusive. It provides scholarships for college students and hosts a plethora of educational events but has dodged the public eye since its inception in 1922. Even its website is only viewable by members.

The Junior League of Dallas — another citywide organization based in Preston Hollow takes the opposite approach and religiously recruits new members. More than 5,000 women volunteer for 130,000 hours every year, according to its website.

Although lesser known, the Preston Hollow Women’s Club is proud of its welcoming nature. Club members must live within the neighborhood’s boundaries and pay an annual fee.

It chooses a nonprofit or school to assist every three years and currently is dedicated to improving Preston Hollow Elementary.

It’s not surprising that the elementary school is the club’s philanthropic recipient. Their ties date back to 1979, when a group of mothers at the school established the social organization.

Members already raised funds for a student garden, provided supplies for a math and science closet, and replaced headphones inside the language lab.

“They have made so many strides,” says philanthropy chair Lola Sims. “They have a great principal; they’re very forward thinking.”

Sims has watched the club grow from roughly 120 to 230 members since she joined in 2006. Like many other members, her children were grown, and she wanted to fill her time with something productive. Part of the organization’s appeal is its dozens of special interest groups, from biking to book clubs to wine tastings.

“We’re just a group of women who enjoy each other’s company,” Sims says. “Having the philanthropy attached gives us a greater purpose.”

TY MONTGOMERY

What he’s up to now:

Ty Montgomery is a running back for the Green Bay Packers, much to the chagrin of Cowboys fans. He was a third-round pick in the 2015 draft, but dual wrist and rib injuries kept him off the field most of the season. Montgomery devotes his free time to helping children in foster care. In 2017, he teamed up with the Coalition for Children, Youth and Families to recruit potential foster parents.

Three things to know

1 Montgomery’s mother, Lisa, fostered and raised 17 children as a single parent because he wanted siblings. “It turned from one to next thing you know we’re taking in families,” Montgomery told ESPN. “It speaks to the kind of person she is. It really does.”

2 He majored in political science at Stanford, where he played wide receiver. As a college athlete, he had a team-high of 61 receptions for 604 yards.

3 Montgomery was a five-sport athlete at St. Mark’s. Besides football, he played lacrosse, baseball, basketball and ran track.

The Prado of Texas

The Meadows Museum’s building is as important as the art inside

20 advocatemag.com LIVING
DESIGN
BEAUTIFULLY IN PRESTON HOLLOW
advocatemag.com 21

One of the world’s largest collections is located inside the Meadows Museum at SMU. The institution, which features the likes of Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso, showcases paintings from A.D. 9 to present day.

“It’s the most comprehensive collection of Spanish art anywhere outside of Spain,” says Janet Kafka, honorary consul of Spain and a member of the museum’s advisory council.

Works of art loaned from high-profile galleries also make guest appearances at rotating exhibitions. In 2010, the Meadows became the first institution to partner with the Prado Museum, Madrid’s esteemed version of the Louvre.

Despite its prestige among art aficionados, the museum is often forgotten by the community, says Bridget Marx, associate

director and curator of exhibitions.

“It’s a huge shame, because it’s an amazing collection,” she says.

Its existence is owed to Algur H. Meadows, an oil tycoon with an affinity for Spanish artwork. After exploring the Prado on foreign business trips, he began acquiring original works during the 1950s.

He donated the prized collection to the university in 1962 after the death of his wife, Virginia. He then provided funding to construct the Owen Fine Arts Center, where a museum could be situated.

Three years later, the Meadows Museum opened, but its location didn’t lend itself to large crowds. The works of art spent 40 years tucked inside a hall at the center, where few people outside of the university wandered.

22 advocatemag.com
Dallasites don’t need a passport to immerse themselves in Spanish art.

“It wasn’t a space that was fitting for a collection of that caliber,” Kafka says.

With an $18.5-million donation from The Meadows Foundation, the university decided to build its replacement — one that could accommodate special events and an influx of visitors. It commissioned Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge to design the two-story, 66,000-square-foot space. The Chicagobased architecture firm’s credentials include renovating the Chicago History Museum and the Toledo Museum of Art.

The museum reopened at 5900 Bishop Blvd. in 2001, and even King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia attended its inauguration.

“It’s what got Spain to notice the museum,” Kafka says.

Its red brick exterior matches SMU’s

DID YOU KNOW ...

The museum received its nickname, “Prado on the Prairie,” in 1968 from Time Magazine after Algur H. Meadows told the Houston Chronicle that he was determined to give Texas its own version of the European museum.

The Meadows Museum ran into trouble not long after its inception when it became apparent some of the works Meadows procured were forgeries. He purchased the art from a Paris dealer, who sold copycat works from “an accomplished copier of the masters, a Hungarian painter named Elmyr de Hory,” according to Meadows’ obituary, published in the New York Times in 1978. Once Meadows discovered the paintings weren’t real, he bought $2 million worth of original art to replace them.

Before the museum reopened in 2001, 27 of its works toured museums across Spain for the first time in history. “Some people cried,” says Janet Kafka, honorary consul of Spain. “Some people said they’d studied these pieces in their art history classes but never knew where they ended up.”

Georgian architecture, Marx says, while European galleries inspired its interior design. Open spaces, warm hues and natural light are characteristic of each room.

“One of the things Meadows does that is so extraordinary is they use wall color the way European exhibitions do,” Kafka says. “It makes them very welcoming. You almost feel like you’re in a private home or private villa.”

It now has an auditorium and areas to rent for special events, in addition to a plaza and sculpture garden. This month, avant-garde artist Eduardo Chillida’s sculptures, drawings and collages are on display.

“The galleries are very embracing and accessible and friendly,” Kafka says. “It’s very easy to do a walk-through. Even a first-timer will appreciate the history and the beauty.”

STORIES OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

When Michael Savoie II isn’t at Alcuin School, the 8-year-old is a DJ.

NO CHILD’S PLAY

How many kids dress up like Slick Rick for Halloween?

Eight-year-old Michael Savoie II made “Rick the Ruler” his costume, complete with Kangol hat and eye patch, last October.

The Alcuin School student plays chess and competes in swimming, but deejaying is his life.

As DJ Flying Ace, Michael has played birthday parties, the Dallas Festival of Ideas and a fashion show. He’s taken his talents to Preston Hollow, too, and played a school dance.

He learned the art of the turntables at the Keep Spinning DJ Academy, founded by Dallas-based DJ Jay Clipp, where he began studying in 2015.

“The sky is the limit for him,” Clipp says of Michael. “I’m amazed at the things he’s picked up in such a short period of time. This guy is just special.”

The boy’s dad, visual artist Michael Savoie, says that he and his wife, Dawn, noticed their son’s aptitude for music when he was 2 or 3 years old. They raised him listening to R&B and soul classics — Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and the like — and any time he received a new CD, he always wanted to be alone to listen intensely.

The couple, who are Oak Cliff residents, met in art school in San Francisco. He’s a full-time artist, and she’s

a chef. They encourage their kids, Michael and 6-year-old Lola, to pursue their artistic interests with gusto.

“We appreciate the value of creativity, even as far as making it a career,” says the elder Savoie.

Where some kids dream of playing Major League Baseball or becoming a doctor, young Michael wants to have his own studio, to be a music producer and score movies. He told his mom that he wants to win a Grammy.

His parents invested in equipment — a sound system, a laptop with Serato DJ software and an MPC Studio Black drum machine so that he can make his own beats.

DJ Flying Ace loves it. He can spend a full Saturday in his room, mixing records and experimenting with rhythms, his dad says.

“We have to stop him to eat,” he says.

Even though he’s only 8, with a DJ name inspired by Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts,” the kid is no gimmick, says his teacher Clipp.

He knows music from current pop to ’60s R&B to ’80s hip-hop. And he’s soon to become the first kid DJ to make a mix for Discogs. Michael knows so much music that Clipp says his student keeps him on his toes.

“He’s not just a cute kid DJ. He’s a kid who knows how to mix and cut and scratch and rock a crowd,” Clipp says. “He takes it very seriously.”

DJ Flying Ace is ready to play out more, his dad says. His parents know he’ll be deejaying in kid -friendly and not-so-kid-friendly environments, but it doesn’t worry them. Michael isn’t interested in anything but the music.

“There’s tons of kids out there whose parents don’t allow them to explore their creativity,” his dad says. “I just want them to find what they want to do early on and then give them all the tools to pursue it.”

Now they’re figuring out the marketing side — a website, an Instagram page, getting the word out that DJ Flying Ace is available to rock your party.

The real Slick Rick, by the way, reposted the Instagram pic of DJ Flying Ace’s Halloween costume. So that’s a start.

Taking one day to organize your entire week will smooth out your days and allow you more time on busy weeknights. Here’s five things to do on Sunday to ease the stress.

1. Check the calendar — Nothing worse than forgetting meetings or an important event. Review your week each Sunday, and don’t forget to plan some fun stuff, too.

2. Shop and prep meals — Helps you eat healthy. Plus, you can avoid mid-week trips to the grocery store.

3. Tidy up — Straighten up enough so that your place looks presentable when you wake up on Monday morning.

4. Make a list for Monday — Identify the biggest priorities so you know what to tackle first when you get to work.

5. Go to bed early — Don’t start Monday off tired and stressed. Have a stress-free week!
