DALLAS’ BAD NEWS CARE BEAR
This Thomas Jefferson grad and city columnist is Dallas’ biggest fanboy
ACUPUNCTURE IS A PROVEN SOLUTION FOR: Pain | Stress | Allergies | Headaches | Poor Sleep | Bad Digestion | Fine Lines and Wrinkles | And More
our city’s biggest fan is often its strongest critic. Dallas Morning News columnist Robert Wilonsky’s byline first appeared in the Dallas Observer in 1991, where he gained a reputation for being a quickwitted and opinionated journalist. In a city that tends to bulldoze history, Wilonsky is adamant about preserving pieces of Dallas’ past in writing. The Thomas Jefferson High School graduate even purchased the house next door to his childhood home in Sparkman Club Estates. “I think you can grow up in a city with its history in your bones, in your DNA,” he says.
What was your childhood like?
I share a backyard fence with my childhood home. I drive by my old high school, Thomas Jefferson, twice a day. My childhood was pretty great in that I haven’t done a great deal to escape it. I did move away twice — once to Austin to go away to school and to Los Angeles to help run a newspaper — but I came back every time.
What brings you back?
Writing about Los Angeles, I felt like a bit of an imposter. I felt like I needed to write about a place to which I had a connection. So that’s why I came back here in 1996.
Is it strange to live next to your childhood home?
No, it’s not weird. It’s like a John Updike novel with a happy ending: “Rabbit Did Not Run.”
What makes you so proud of your family’s legacy?
I like the fact my family played some small part in developing the city. My grandfather knew Jack Ruby. He knew Bonnie and Clyde. They were customers at his auto parts store. My mother was the X-ray tech at Parkland the day that Kennedy was brought in. My father was at Campisi’s at lunch after having seen the president at Love Field when he found out Kennedy died.
Is your son, Harry, as passionate about Dallas’ history as you?
We collect Dallas memorabilia. Harry really loves that stuff. When he was a little kid, we spent every Saturday driving the city. When I write a story about an imperiled old home, he often comes with. He’s not quite the fetishist I am, but he adores it in a way I was not exposed to or did not understand when I was his age. I spent a lot of time in my teens working at my father’s auto parts shop on Second Avenue next to Fair Park. I heard stories as a little kid about how Second Avenue in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s was like Beale Street. It was a vibrant and active community with jazz clubs, record stores. I would talk to customers of my father and grandfather about that. You accrue a narrative when your mother is a footnote in something significant that happened here.
What are some of the biggest issues in Dallas and in the Preston Hollow/North Dallas area?
Well in Dallas and North Dallas, it’s affordable
housing. It’s galling that all these affordable housing meetings in the city are all south of I-30. I think for us to think all of that needs to be south of the Trinity is how we’ve gotten to the point we’re in now. We need to take a closer look at the city as a whole, whether be it Vickery Meadow or Bachman Lake or Hamilton Park. You can see it at Marsh and Walnut Hill. Once upon a time, it was a thriving little corner. Today, it is not that. We don’t have any little hip spots in northwest Dallas.
If you had hypothetical control over the city, what would you do?
I would make sure we had affordable housing that was easily available. I think we are going to reach a crisis point, if we have not already. God forbid Amazon comes here. I don’t think we would be able to recover. If I had control over the city, I’d demand people send their kids to Dallas ISD. It’s the snake that eats its tail. Having mixed income and racial diversity in the schools is the one thing that’s going to help them.
What are your vices?
I don’t drink anymore. I hate to say it, but one of my biggest vices is I often put work ahead of everything else. Like all journalists, I feel that one day I’ll be found out as a fraud, so I need to keep proving every day I’m not. My work-life, homelife balance has always been wildly out-of-whack.
Do you have any stories you regret?
No, I can’t think of any. Should I? There’s probably some stories my editors regret reading. Then again, I can’t think of any that I’m very proud of either. I tread a fine line between self-deprecating and self-loathing. It’s a wildly unhealthy combination. No one loves us and hates us more than ourselves.
Since you started as a music critic, what are your favorite concerts in Dallas?
The first concert I saw was Jackson 5 at Memorial Auditorium. I, to this day, maintain Wilco at the Palladium was great. Anything at the Bronco Bowl. I deeply and profoundly miss it. They tore it down and put a Home Depot in its place. It’s the most Dallas story I’ve ever heard. I’m very nostalgic for a Dallas I remember, but I’m very nostalgic for a Dallas I never knew in the ’40s and ’50s. The crowded Downtown, the packed streetcars, the crowded sidewalks. That doesn’t exist anymore.
What else should people know about you?
I don’t expect I’ll ever move. I do fear sometimes I’ve become a parody of myself. I only tweet about old Dallas things. I only buy old Dallas things. I have hundreds and hundreds of books on Dallas history. I do worry I need to find more interests.
“My grandfather knew Jack Ruby. He knew Bonnie and Clyde.”

BETTER KNOW A NEIGHBOR
LILLY NEUBAUER
LILLY NEUBAUER is putting her lifelong love of art to good use as the founder of Bold Strokes, an art auction to benefit Heart House. Her meticulous attention to detail makes the auction more than just a silent charity gala, but an evening where two neighborhoods can come together and get to know one another. She hopes that the auction will become something that benefits everyone: the artists, the patrons and the beneficiaries. With a mantra of mindfulness and compassion, Neubauer hopes her daughter, Heidi, will grow up with the same sensitivity to immigrants that she and her husband gained from living overseas as children.
When did you move to Preston Hollow?
I grew up in Preston Hollow and, kind of by coincidence, moved back over here. I went to the school on the corner growing up, and so I kind of knew about this little secret neighborhood that had good-sized houses for young couples. The neighborhood has grown, and we’ve become re-involved in the neighborhood as a family. It’s fun to drive past certain places or go to the same businesses that were there when I was growing up here.
What was it like growing up in Preston Hollow?
My mom raised us to be creative, and she always was taking us to free day at the Dallas Museum of Art or different cultural exhibits. I’ve never been very talented, but I’ve always been very attracted to art and enjoyed looking at it and interacting with it.
Tell me about Bold Strokes.
So, last July was the first year of Bold Strokes, and we raised $7,000. We decided to evolve the event to have the art auction, but to add on an artisan marketplace this year. There are so many really interesting small businesses in Dallas that make different items: gifts, clothing, jewelry and stationery. It’s local, handmade; there are great instances where it’s even refugee-made.
Where does the money go?
The proceeds from the event benefit Heart House Dallas, which is a nonprofit in Vickery Meadows. They work with the refugee kids on transition and intervention. They have afterschool
programs where they work on homework. They will intervene on behalf of the students with DISD schools — be an advocate for the kid when his parents are overwhelmed and working and trying to get a handle on the logistics. What resonated with me is they have a mindfulness program where they help the kids with fixed versus growth mindset. They address trauma. They teach the kids self-soothing, self-care, breathing and mindfulness techniques that address the issue of the transition.
What makes you so passionate about helping these kids?
I think there’s this population of children coming up in Dallas that have the potential to bring commerce, new ideas and innovation to the city. We just need to make sure they have the emotional support and the early support that they need. Even as a mom with a child living in Preston Hollow, I find these kids to be a great asset because my daughter can meet them and learn about different cultures firsthand and learn about different ideas and people. So I find
them to be one of our greatest assets that we have this global community living in the middle of Dallas.
How has Bold Strokes impacted your family?
This has synced so well with our family values at the moment. We had a baby and had jobs and were off to the races. We had to pump our own brakes to put mindfulness into place for us to feel like we were living our days well. What they do with the kids resonates with us. The ability for everyone in our family to be involved has been really nice. They recently did a science fair to teach their kids public speaking and working together on projects and time management. Heidi and I went to judge that. Sometimes we’ll just go play on the playground. I get a lot out of the time I spend there. I also love that my daughter is seeing different ways of life in Dallas. I’d like her to just have a widened perspective of what life is like for different types of people.

THIS AUSTIN-BASED CHAIN RETURNS TO ITS DALLAS ROOTS
By ELISSA CHUDWIN / Photos by KATHY TRANA FEW DAYS BEFORE JUICELAND’S GRAND OPENING in February, owner Matt Shook dashes in and out of the Austin-based chain.
Shook doles out coupons to passersby and greets customers, all while catching up with longtime friends who sporadically stop by.
He’s eager to show off the Lovers Lane shop, whose green and orange walls match his T-shirt and hat. A mural of the Dallas skyline and local rock star St. Vincent is a recurring topic of conversation. She even retweeted a photo of the artwork, he says.
Shook’s health-conscious attitude and freespirited tendencies make him seem like the quintessential Austinite.
“Just look at the colors in here, and that’s his personality,” says longtime friend Juan “Juancho” Sanchez.
But Shook is a North Dallas native, and opening the restaurant’s 26th location feels like a homecoming celebration. He transferred from Jesuit College Preparatory School to W.T. White, where he met his wife, Kelly. He was a member of W.T. White’s spirit group, which included a few bizarre
rituals like the jock run, where members ran in jock straps while carrying axes. That event was an informal rite of passage, Shook says.
When he moved to Austin for college, he landed a job at a business called The Juice Joint near Barton Springs Pool. The building had plenty of charm, and the customers provided an education about the health benefits of cold-pressed juice.
The owner fled without notice, so Shook took over the business. He hired his friends as employees, and he’s opened a handful of locations in Houston and Brooklyn.
“It provided me a creative outlet,” he says. “I get to surround myself with people I like.”
They expanded the menu to include smoothies, bowls and vegan options. Shook says it’s been so successful because of its simplicity. All of the smoothies are made with frozen fruit and juice, without any dairy or added fillers. He thinks that, along with the chain’s relaxed vibe, is why it’s so popular.
“You don’t have to be a UFC fighter,” he says. “You don’t have to be driving a Rolls Royce … We welcome everybody.”
What to try
If you’re feeling adventurous, owner Matt Shook recommends the Halla Pain Yo juice, made with carrot, lime, cilantro, turmeric, jalapeno, Himalayan sea salt and habanero. If heat isn’t your thing, stick with the carrot apple ginger juice. The Originator, which tastes like a peanut butter and jelly, is a fan-favorite smoothie.
JENNA BUSH HAGER
PRESTON HOLLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND THE HOCKADAY SCHOOL
Her legacy
Before joking around with Hoda and Kathy Lee as a Today show correspondent, Jenna Bush Hager was a frequent target of the press. The younger twin daughter of our neighbors the 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, Hager is a granddaughter of the 41st U.S. President George H.W. Bush. She attended Preston Hollow and Hockaday before graduating from Austin High School and the University of Texas at Austin. She is mother to Mila and Poppy and the co-author of “Sisters First” with sister, Barbara.
Three things to know
1 Hager ditched the Secret Service when she was a firstgrader at Preston Hollow. She went to the playground with a friend then made up a story about being kidnapped. The Secret Serviceman believed her, but her mother did not.
2 When she transferred to Hockaday, she wrote she felt like she was visiting a foreign country. “Everything was bigger and shinier than in our old elementary school. The girls seemed smarter and fancier, brasher and bolder, prettier, and sometimes meaner.”
3 When Henry Hager asked then President Bush for permission to marry Jenna, Bush gave his approval and ended the talk by saying, “We love Jenna, but you know she can be a pain in the ass.”

TWIN BEDROOM REBOOT
A designing mom takes a high-low approach for her growing boys
By LISA KRESL Photo by KATHY TRANhen your dad is 6-foot-4 and you’re a 10-yearold male twin, it’s officially time for a big-boy bed. Brookes and Holden Spurgin are fourth graders at Good Shepherd Episcopal School, and they share a room. The family’s three-bedroom has a mid-century modern aesthetic. Mother Helene, an interior designer who is originally from Palm Beach, Fla., likes bright colors in her home. She decided it was time for the vintage white bamboo bureau once used in the nursery to go.
“I tried to design a room that was fresh and modern, something that they could grow into,” Spurgin says. “I love that they enjoy sharing a room, and I need to keep it that way as long as I can.”
Spurgin says the Hinson & Company blue-and-white splatter-print fabric
was the first thing she selected, and she designed the whole room around that. The upholstered full-size beds were custom made, the rug is from Stark, the acrylic benches are from Scout Design Studio and the vintage mid-century modern dresser is from Antiques Moderne, a furniture consignment store. The bachelor chest and bookcase are both from Ikea.
“I dressed it up with brass hardware,” she says. “Kids’ rooms are the perfect place for a high-low mix.”
The vintage yacht club and golf flags on the wall are sentimental because they are from the boys’ late

great grandfathers. “It’s nice to have a little piece of our respective hometowns represented in their room,” she says. “I made them look modern by framing them in acrylic and brass.”
Friend Kristen Dowd of Gypsy Soul Interiors created the large abstract painting. The boys’ only request was a comfortable chair and ottoman, so she bought a knock-off Eames chair from Amazon. “They fight over who gets to sit in it while knocking out their fourth-grade reading,” Spurgin says.
What do the boys think about the final design? “They love it, especially the larger beds,” she says. “The first few weeks they took pride in making their beds and kept it very clean. Sadly, the novelty has definitely worn off.”
Smiley’s favorite neighborhood shopping hack: Sur la Table. “We entertain a lot, so I am so excited we now can dash over to Sur la Table when we need a special pan for macarons or a last-minute bridal shower gift. Then we dash next door to the Paper Source to get an accompanying card and fabulous wrapping paper for the gift. So convenient!”
Spring Zing
Interior designer Mary Anne Smiley is the kind of neighbor who responds to emails with an emoji. A smiley face emoji, of course. “Spring always ushers in light and bright colors,” says Smiley. “And since I am known for bold use of color, nothing thrills me more.”
Here’s what makes Smiley smile on the home front this month:
n New kitchen towels in Easter egg colored checks.
n Lime-green checked plates like the ones she had when she first got married in the 1960s. “So fun on the patio!”
n Gerbera daisies from spring until fall. “They are inexpensive and I love the colors. We use buckets of them.”
n Hydrangeas fresh from her backyard from late April, when they start blooming, until the end of June.
“I fertilize them with soil acidifier so that they turn a fabulous periwinkle purplish blue. They are stunning in my white porcelain vases.”
Smiley’s personal spring home improvement project: Adding a movie screen and projector to her backyard for the many upcoming entertainment events around the pool. —LISA KRESL

An Italian count built the mansion in the ’30s. Tom Hicks expanded it at the turn of the century. In 2017, the Statler’s developer snapped it up for a song and is turning it into Preston Hollow’s newest exclusive ‘subdivision’ with its centerpiece as

hirty days. That’s how long the crew has to give this Preston Hollow cougar a touchup before she goes back on the market to lure her next suitor.
Silver has been ordered to patch the silver-leaf bar. Workers hang two 75-inch televisions in the pool house. Gardeners are restoring the rose, vegetable and herb gardens to their former glory. And a chandelier from the Statler is on its way in a custom-made crate to grace the mansion’s entry.
The Crespi Estate, on Walnut Hill near the Tollway, has a 28,000-square-foot limestone mansion designed in 1938 by world-renowned architect Maurice Fatio. The home, commissioned by Italian Count Pio Crespi who had been sent to Texas to oversee his family’s cotton empire, has a storied past to match its architectural significance.
Mehrdad Moayedi, the CEO of Cen-
turion American, which recently completed the $250 million renovation of the mid-century modern Statler Hotel in Downtown Dallas, bought the 25-acre property for $36.2 million in a December 2017 auction. Previous owner billionaire banker Andy Beal purchased the property for $100 million in 2016.
Moayedi plans to divide the land into a new seven-home neighborhood called The Crespi Estates, according to Brad Oellermann, who oversees the project’s construction. The mansion, guest house and pool house on 12 acres will sell for $29.5 million. A line of magnolias will be planted in front of the mansion to separate that property from the new Crespi Estates, five homes to be developed and sold off Walnut Hill and two off Daria Place near the home of former President and Mrs. George W. Bush. The mansion’s new entrance will snake down from Walnut Hill.
“When you think of Dallas stereotypes, there’s football, big hair and large living in large houses, and there’s none larger than the Crespi,” says Mark Lamster, architecture critic at The Dallas Morning News. “This is the definition of what a Dallas mansion could be: an exercise in the kind of ostentation that makes Dallas, Dallas.”
‘French chateau twist’
Italian-born cotton tycoon Crespi fell in love with Florence “Flo” Patton in Waco during the 1920s, even though both were married to other people and had children, according to Alan Peppard, former society columnist at The Dallas Morning News. Flo’s husband, Willard Wigley, sued Count Crespi, citing “alienation of affections.” The jury awarded Wigley $10,000.
After marrying Flo, Crespi relocated his business to Dallas and bought about 30 acres along the Cotton Belt rail line, which is now the Dallas North Tollway.
Swiss architect Fatio designed the mansion, called “Villa Florenza” by the Crespis. A rail depot was built on the property to transport marble and Indiana limestone to build the house. Fatio, who designed homes for the Vanderbilts and the Duchess of Marlborough, was known
for his perfect proportions. The Crespi estate was the last home Fatio completed before his death at 45.
“Maurice Fatio is best known as a society architect to the fabulously wealthy in Palm Beach in the 1920s, building impeccably detailed and enormous houses that oozed ‘old world’ Mediterranean charm for those with new American money,” says Kathryn Holliday, director of the David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington. “The Crespi estate brings that kind of extravagant taste to Dallas, but with a French chateau twist.”
The Crespis hosted guests such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Coco Chanel and once held a reception for actor Jimmy Stewart and President Ronald Reagan during his presidential campaign. After Crespi’s death in 1969, Flo didn’t change the interior of the house even after she remarried. She died at the age of 100.
The Hicks legacy
Former Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks and his wife, Cinda, bought the mansion a few months after Flo died, and the property became known as the Crespi-Hicks Estate. The Hicks hired architect Peter Marino to restore it to the original vision.
As the home was remodeled from 2000 to 2002, Hicks arranged to open the Indiana quarry to make sure the exact vein of limestone was used. Each piece was then sent to Italy for crafting.
The Hickses restored and expanded the mansion, which took as many as 250 craftsmen. Renovation cost was estimated at $2,000 per square foot. He also added a 3,300-squarefoot, two-story guesthouse with a full kitchen, living room and dining room and a recreational complex with a pool and 4,800-squarefoot hangout with a 19-seat cinema-quality theater.
Neighbor former president Bush is said to have hiked through the woods and come to hang out at the Hickses’, says Oellermann.
The Hickses lived in the mansion until 2014. Dallas billionaire banker Andy Beal bought the property in 2016 then sold it in 2017.
“One would have to go to 17th century Belgium or 18th century France to find comparable craftsmanship,” said the late Bill Booziotis, former Dallas Chapter AIA president, on Douglas Newby’s site Architecturally Significant Homes.

Be proactive in home maintenance and stay ahead of issues
Spring has sprung, daylight savings time has passed. That means it’s time to get your house ready for the warmer weather. Here are some tips to guide you through the process.
1) Check your gutters and downspouts. Make sure they are clear and clean so spring rains don’t cause flooding.
2) Get a good look at your roof. Make sure your shingles are in good shape and none are missing.
3) Check the trim around your window and doors. Peeling paint means the wood can rot.
4) Make that call to the air conditioning company. It’s time to have it serviced.
5) Service the lawn equipment. Getting a tune up will help you have an enjoyable lawn season. Now you’re ready to enjoy the change of seasons.

EARTHx 2018 | Fair Park | Dallas
Friday - Sunday | April 20 - 22
Green Line to Fair Park Station
WELCOME TO EarthX2018!
We’re gathering citizens, educators, businesses, nonprofts and global leaders at the world’s largest environmental exposition, conference and flm festival — right here in Dallas, Texas!
Earth Day Texas has evolved to EarthX to take our connective abilities to a worldwide audience and create impact that will bring positive change for future generations.
EarthX2018 will be better than ever – a global gathering of epic proportions! We have many environmental and industry leaders attending this year along with representatives from over 15 countries, governors and cabinet members to dozens of public utility commissioners and governmental agency representatives.
We expect over 250 speakers including globally renowned explorer and oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, former Secretary of State, James Baker, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Presidential Blue Ribbon Nuclear Commission member Susan Eisenhower.
What would a celebration be without FUN? Find it around every corner of Fair Park – from environmental flm screenings, virtual reality experiences, a scavenger hunt, yoga (even goat yoga!) to Outdoor Adventures complete with a 32’ climbing wall, tree climbing and a scuba dive pool. An environmental art installation and music complete the Earth Day celebration.
At EarthX, discover simple, everyday acts of stewardship from clean energy technology to recycling to pollinators. You can make positive changes in your everyday life that create big impact for our planet and mankind. Take the idea of environmental stewardship from just Earth Day to everyday.
We look forward to seeing you – with your help, together, we’ll discover SMART SOLUTIONS for BIG IMPACT!
