c l i c kw o r t hy THE WORD The Lindsley Park playground will be closed for three months this summer while the Park and Recreation Department makes $120,000 worth of improvements, including replacing the existing playground with new all-abilities equipment, sidewalk repairs and permanent restrooms.

TO WHATABURGER OR NOT The fate of the proposed Whataburger at Arboretum Village, between Tom Thumb and Gaston Avenue, is still undecided. The Dallas City Plan

“RESTROOM!!!!!!!! This is probably one of the busiest playgrounds in Dallas so 100% worth the investment. Heck, I don’t think they need to update the pay equipment even, just RESTROOOMS!!!!” — Emma Louise Barton

Commission voted to continue discussions about the drive-thru at the May 20 meeting. Whataburger wants to remove the deed restrictions, which prohibit drive-thru uses. These restrictions do not cover the Raising Cane’s site, where a drive-thru now exists, because the Cane’s site is a separate parcel of property. Search "Whataburger" at lakewood.advocatemag.com to read more.

REPAIRING A ROSS AVENUE ICON The Alexander Mansion is under construction after the February freeze caused pipes to burst and water to flood rooms dating back to the early 20th century. Search "Alexander Mansion" at lakewood.advocatemag.com to read more.

"Our Realtor is telling us to play it safe, but there's already people doing that, and that's not who we are."

“Gee, I hate to see playgrounds closed down during the main time they are wanted, needed the most — the summertime. I wonder why not during colder weather instead. This removes it from a whole summer of a kid's life.” — Jim Pike

“Wow, they can get all that for $120K? Seems kind of low to me.” — Robyn Kirk

“My family walked to Lindsley almost every single day when my kids were little. I remember when one of the two springy ride-on (horses? dolphins?) broke 14.5 years ago when my son was 6 months old and I kept expecting the City to replace it any day. Lol! 14.5 years later ...” — Marisa Pruett Elmore

In 2013, she quit her teaching job and signed a contract to race full time for Team T I B C O S i l i c o n Va l l e y B a n k . T h e c o m p e t i t i o n circ uit includes weeks of races in Europe, where she was riding when the pandemic hit. Mat had flown into Milan to train with her for a race that was later cancel ed. By that time, Milan had stopped flights to the States, so he flew home on the last plane from Rome before the U.S. barred entr y from Italy. Lauren’s season was canceled, and she me t him in Oklahoma for what would be his last race of the year. Fo r a w h i l e , t h e c o u p l e didn’t even ride bikes around White Rock Lake. They pursued new hobbies, and Lauren sold sourdough bread on the corner of Lakeshore and Peavy. One weekend, the profits went to Project Echelon, a nonprofit that educates and equips veterans through physical activity. They took up virtual racing to stay in shape when in-person events resumed. Even as a newcomer to online cycling, Lauren won two stages of the Virtual Tour de France, and her team finished first overall. She hopes to continue showing what she can do ahead of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. USA Cycling named her to the long list of 10 contenders, with the top four selected to the final team in early June. As an elite female cyclist, Lauren can go toe-to-toe with many men. In February, the couple participated in a 12-hour mountain bike relay race. Instead of entering the co-ed category, they opted for stiffer competition in the men’s division. Lauren hustled to stay ahead of the pack, and she credits Mat for letting her skip some of the night laps. In the end, the extra effort was worth it to share a smooch at the top of the podium, she says. "Riding together is something we’ve been doing almost since the first day we met," Lauren says. "When I think I’ve reached the best I can be, s o m eh o w h e p u s h e s m e t o b e b e tt e r. "

"It’s hard sometimes taking criticism from him, but I would also have it no other way."

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

A farewell to charm T h e rea l esta te b o o m i s n ' t a l l a b e d of roses (o r t u l i ps)

W

h e n I m o ve d t o O l d East Dallas in 2016, t he li ttle th re e -be d room, one-bathroom Craftsman that my now-husband and I rented was one of the nicest on the block – and that wasn’t a high bar. The house needed new paint and landscaping, but like most original houses in Junius Heights, the charm couldn’t be denied. We renewed our lease year after year, feeling little pangs of doubt as the rent went up and up and the house surpassed its centennial. I have watched with anticipation as so many houses on my street were renovated and then sold, or sold and then renovated. The beautification brought by these ne w neighbors couldn’ t be denied. Lush St. Augustine replaced under-maintained lawns. Flowerbeds got brighter with each passing season. All the while, we would comment on high listing prices with mild amusement, not overly concerned about how this could impact our ability to remain residents in the neighborhood we had come to adore. Slowly, we became the longest-tenured neighbors among the houses surrounding ours. A neighbor who bought her house in 2005 toyed with listing it for sale several times, hoping to make a bundle. Evidently it worked. A new family moved in a couple months back, and it took less than a week for the work trucks, plumbers and electricians to follow. Amid the pandemic, walking these neighborhoods saved my sanity. I walk to Munger Park and Lipscomb Elementary and Lakewood Library with my dog, or I jog Swiss Avenue and Junius Heights, zigzagging the

Junius Heights is named for Junius “June” Peak. In 1865 he lived with his brother Worth at 4409 Worth St. The Peak children are immortalized in a number of East Dallas streets: Junius, Worth, Victor, Carroll, Flora and Juliette Fowler. In the monotony that followed in the next weeks and months, the daffodils, irises and tulips I saw on my daily walks eventually gave way to blooming wisteria, then lantana, then crape myrtles, then trumpet vines. I walked my neighborhood daily with fresh eyes, altering my route to pass my favorite houses, admiring the flora

and appreciating the green thumbs that had planted them. It wasn’t much of a surprise when our landlords told us they were selling. They had no doubt seen the dollar signs in the eyes of the prospective buyers walking through our neighbor’s nearly identical house. Who could blame them? They offered to sell it to us, but that option is, unfortunately, impractical for us. Although I’ve daydreamed about living here for the long term, we plan to take our pre-approval letter up Central Expressway where our budget will get us twice the square footage on thrice the lot. My house is over 100 years old and certainly has an optimistic future in a protected historic district like this one. The new owners, whoever they end up being, will have their work cut out for them with renovations. I just hope they plant bulbs in the front yard. PAWS & CLAWS

Pip, pip, hooray! Pippa and the Parker family go together like a wink and a smile. The 8-month-old sheepadoodle winks at family members when she wants to communicate with them, and it never fails to make them smile, owner Alison Parker says. “She has human characteristics,” Parker says. “She loves to give bear hugs, and she’ll shake your hand with her paw.” The Parkers adopted Pippa in October after their beagle of 15 years died. Parker’s husband grew up with a poodle and an Old English sheepdog, and he wanted a pet that embodied the best qualities of his two favorite dogs. In a nod to her English heritage, the family named the pooch Pippa after Kate Middleton’s sister. “Last year was hard for the kids,” Parker says. “She’s been a light through all of it.” —JAIME DUNAWAY-SEALE

The Bender brothers, who created rooms in the Instagram-famous Sweet Tooth Hotel, are now flipping houses.

BU I LT BY B E N D E R Craftsmanship you can experience from the couch THE BENDER BROTHERS want to make something that will last a hundred years. Milan, Aaron and Ariel Bender made a name for themselves designing one-of-a-kind furniture, photo industry props and movie sets while conjuring extraordinary pop-up art exhibits from their East Dallas studio. They crafted the Sprinkle Spa, Sunset

Lounge, Dream Suite and several other rooms in the Instagram-famous Sweet Tooth Hotel, where visitors can pose in a forest of glowing cacti or a rainbow rocket ship ready to blast off to the land of sugar. Yet months of hard work concluded when a pop-up came to the end of its run and landed in the trash. When the participatory art experience

was upended last year, the brothers paused and pondered what they wanted to create. They enjoyed their job, but working with clients could be a long and grueling process. The siblings decided to put their creativity to use flipping houses, where they could still work with their hands to produce innovative living spaces from their own imagination.

A rainbow-powered rocket ship built by the Benders in the Sweet Tooth Hotel.

“It’s hard when you’re coming up with crazy ideas and getting a client to see the vision and agree to execute it,” Milan says. “We’ve excelled when it’s a blank canvas. That didn’t happen often enough. The pandemic forced something we were already thinking about — getting out of the immersive art world. It was a natural progression to stop and make a major change.” Their first house is a 1955 fixer-upper near Casa Linda. The brothers closed on the three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath home and hope to finish the project in

three to six months. This isn’t the Benders’ first remodel. They’ve all renovated their own homes and are skilled in carpentry, framing, plumbing and electrical. They honed their skills while working at the family business, the bottled water company Rain Fresh. There they learned to construct furniture, lights, skate ramps and other products before launching a fabrication shop, Built by Bender, in 2016. T he goal is for most homes to have a built-in office nook or outdoor workspace in a renovated

22 lakewood.advocatemag.com JUNE 2021

mother-in-law suite or modular office. “We’re going into this like an art project,” Ariel says. “We know our first house may not achieve everything in our realm of possibilities, but we know the goal and will try to get close to that. We’re going to add more and do better.” The company’s business plan is manifold. The first step is to make a living flipping houses. During renovations, they hope to design products that meet specific needs unique to the homes. They would then sell those products to earn revenue while searching for the next project. The third component is a YouTube channel providing a behind-the-scenes look into their restoration and product development processes. “Our Realtor is telling us to play it safe, but there’s already people doing that, and that’s not who we are,” Milan says. “We’re creating the experience of someone’s life. It’s the backdrop for life’s moments and experiences they’ll remember forever.” With unlimited time and money, the Benders would build everything from scratch. But to stay on budget, the trio will limit what is custom built. Each house will still have one or two craftsman features to add character and value. One idea is an underlit arched hallway reminiscent of the immersive art world. Whatever they build, it won’t be boring. The Benders describe their style as the best of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Milan is drawn to the smooth lines of mid-century modern, Aaron adds a punch of rock ’n’ roll flair and Ariel brings bright, bold patterns from Memphis style. The brothers will blend their retro styles to create something new, yet nostalgic, from a home’s existing materials. “When I looked at houses, I toured 40-plus and kept seeing sloppy, plain remodels,” Aaron says. “Houses use the least offensive materials, and then it’s a white or gray box that all look the same. I didn’t want to pay for that. We’re excited to have our own vision. Eventually we want to build and design our own homes from scratch.” The brothers dream of owning a family compound on land outside of Dallas where they can test and build ideas. They imagine it as an artistic retreat, where they can host camps or rent cabins to visitors for remote getaways. “We have a crazy vision of where it could go,” Milan says. “We take every passion we have in life and try to figure out how to make a living at it. What else would you do with life?”

FIX MY RIDE How a neighbor’s nonprofit pumps the brakes on expensive car repairs Story by JAIME DUNAWAY-SEALE | Photography courtesy of MANUEL TELLEZ

M A N U E L T E L L E Z was working to make ends meet when he moved to Dallas in 2006. It was a tall task with an unreliable money pit of a vehicle. The brake pads needed replaced. Then every part in his cooling system broke. With no one to ask for help, he turned to a payday lender. “I got stuck in that debt trap for a little while, but I eventually made my way out after paying several thousands of dollars in interest,” he says. “Every time I’d go back to the payday lender, I’d run in to people who were there to get loans or renew loans to pay bills. The most common bill I heard was for auto repairs. There was no organization to help folks with that. There was a need.” In 2019, Tellez founded Autocare Haven, a nonprofit

24 lakewood.advocatemag.com JUNE 2021

that provides free car repairs to North Texas motorists who don’t have the funds. Applicants must show a driver's license, proof of residency, proof of income and carry at least the minimum auto insurance coverage. Then a mechanic diagnoses the problem and determines if it can be repaired. The organization won’t restore a totaled car or fix a cosmetic bumper scratch, but it will replace parts that are essential for a car to run. Autocare Haven has provided a new battery, changed a tire and aligned tires. When a woman needed new brake pads, the nonprofit paid to have them replaced. The repair allowed her to get back on the road as a delivery driver for Grubhub and save enough money to rent her own apartment.

“We value everyone having their own vehicle in this country,” Tellez says. “It’s good to have that independence, but if you’re living paycheck to paycheck and don’t have savings or a credit card, you’re one blown tire away from disaster.” The average car repair in Texas costs about $386, but 44 percent of Americans can’t cover an unexpected expense of $400, according to a study from the Federal Reserve. Autocare Haven collects community donations through multiple platforms, such as PayPal, Zelle or Venmo, and pays qualified mechanics to make repairs at no cost to customers. It’s raised hundreds of dollars through GoFundMe and a Facebook donation campaign that coincided with North Texas Giving Day. Board members would like to grow the program, but to do that, they need more funds. Fundraising efforts hit a speedbump last year, when struggling nonprofits clamored for a limited amount of giving dollars. The organization received a boost through a partnership with Amazon. Every few months, the retailer donates auto fluids, such as motor oil and antifreeze, in boxes that have been damaged in shipping. So far, Amazon has donated more than 450 pounds of auto fluid. “I work to get the donations organized,” board member Tyler Wear says. “Given my interest in cars, I thought this

would be something I was well suited to help with. People need a vehicle here. We don’t have mass transit and public transportation like so many other big cities. There are so many areas of town that are only accessible by car. It is a necessity.” The organization services Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Rockwall counties. “A lot of affordable neighborhoods are going through gentrification, and people are moving farther out, where DART opportunities are more sparse,” board member Lauren Ortega says. “In some areas, it’s 5 miles or more to a grocery store, a bank or a library. That’s an hour on a bus. Who has that time? Parents need reliable transportation for their kids or so they can help with an older adult. Maybe they just want to get to work. Any one of us could have car trouble at any time.” For more information, visit autocarehaven.org. If you’re feeling extra, volunteer at For the Love of the Lake’s monthly shoreline spruce-up. (10) ■ Recreate Chris Pratt’s Jurassic World pose in front of Gary Isett’s lawn decorations. was looking for a ne w s tar t for herself and her two boys after completing a one-and-ahalf-year prison sentence. But shortly after release, the mom o f t h r e e w a s ra c i n g a ga i n s t time as her abusive ex-husband had tracked her down once more. In the nick of time, Walterscheid came across Exodus Ministries, a residential disc i p l e s h i p n o n p r o fi t i n E a s t Dallas. Exodus Ministries is an intensive, comprehensive, residential, discipleship program for formerly incarcerated mothers, reuniting them with their children to achieve a productive and fulfilling life through Jesus Christ. It offers a place to live, tools for success and spiritual support. “Exodus just fit into what I was looking for in my life,” Wa l t e r s c h e i d s a y s . “ I t w a s faith-based and it felt like God was pushing me in this direction. This is the place for me.” After 18 months in prison, Maricela Espinosa knew she couldn’ t restar t her and her daughter’s life alone. Exodus would allow her time to work and save money while having a roof over their heads. Espinosa knew returning to her hometown in Andrews, Texas, was not an option. “I knew that if I was going to go back home, I was probably going to have to hurry up and start selling drugs again so I could get my own house,” she says. Walterscheid and Espinosa come from different life experiences, but the pursuit of a better life for their children unites them. These mothers are both working toward their goals with the help of Exodus.

MARICELA’S STORY Espinosa wanted to restart her life “the right way” after being released from prison last May, and Exodus could give her the stable housing and job security she needed. But because of the pandemic, she had to return home for two weeks and face the temptation of walking away from her new opportunity. “It was hard because I’m trying to come over here, but I had people in my ear saying, ‘Ah, don’t go. Stay…’” she says. The single mom made it through quarantine and arrived at Exodus on May 27 with her 12-year-

36 lakewood.advocatemag.com JUNE 2021

old daughter. She found it challenging to adjust to Exodus' litany of rules. The moms are required to get a job, turn in all earnings, attend personal growth classes, go to church every Sunday, complete a regular chore, go to weekly counseling with their kids and meet an 8:45 p.m. curfew. For the first time, Espionsa could no longer abide by her own rules. “There’s a lot of times I wake up and have to pray about it because I just want to throw in the towel and get what I have saved up and leave,” she says. “It’s hard.”

Espinosa’s three children, two of whom are older, motivate her to persist on her most difficult days. “Honestly, if it wasn’t for them, I don’t know what I’d be doing in life. I don’t know if I would even be here. They are the only reasons I will try every day,” she says. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t even care about life. My kids have changed my life. That’s why I’m going to keep trying, for them three.” While Exodus’ limits are difficult, Espinosa is grateful to not have to worry about paying bills during a pandemic. “It’s letting me get there the right way and not go back to my old ways,” she says about Exodus. The mom of three works at Well Grounded Coffee. She values her close relationship with her boss and coffee shop co-founder Natalie Huscheck. “That’s one of my prayers that has been answered,” she says. Espionsa says the camaraderie between her and the moms has also been crucial in her experience at Exodus. They’re like sisters, she says, and are able to lean on each other. “I wouldn’t ask for any other ladies to be in the program with,” she says. Graduation day for Espionsa and her daughter was in May. Her primary goals are to continue working and raise her 12-year-old. “I want to be happy again, but the right way,” she says. However, the future is uncertain for the single mom. Espinosa was considering moving back home to Andrews if she was unable to find housing here after graduating. “Now that I have a background, it’s hard to get an apartment,” she says. Espinosa continues looking to her daughter for strength as they embark on their next chapter. “Every day I wake up trying to not give up,” she says. “But I’ve been praying for strength.”

ANGELA’S STORY Walterscheid was born and reared in New Mexico. After graduating high school, she moved to California, but later returned home after getting pregnant with her daughter. She bounced around between Arizona, Idaho and New Mexico before marrying her ex-husband when her daughter was 5 years old. The relationship became abusive soon after. “That is what led me down the road of drugs and addiction and selling drugs,” she says. Walterscheid escaped her abusive relationship after heading to a domestic violence shelter. She moved to Texas to get away from her ex, but went to prison in November 2018 for possession.

Walterscheid’s oldest daughter looked after her young sons, who are now 7 and 10 years old, during her one-and-a-half-year sentence. “They struggled,” she says. “They went through homelessness a couple times when I was in prison.” Walterscheid was released April 1 last year. She found out about Exodus, but had difficulties getting hold of anyone at the start of the pandemic. “A couple of months later, I ended up in (another) domestic violence shelter,” she says. “My ex-husband found us.” Walterscheid reached out to Exodus again. This time, she got an interview. Exodus typically only accepts women right out of prison, but after hearing her story, she

says they made an exception. It only took a few months for Walterscheid to start acclimating to her new life with her two boys. “At first, it was really hard,” she says. “There’s a lot of rules and it’s kind of overwhelming, but it’s been a very positive impact on my life.” After getting her boys to school each morning, Walterscheid then heads to work at Well Grounded Coffee. Like Espinosa, Walterscheid says coffee shop co-founder Huscheck is “more than just a boss.” “They ask us our ideas, they actually listen to what we have to say,” she says. “We have room to move up from being a trainee to becoming a barista to becoming a supervisor. They are willing to help us open our own store eventually.” Halfway through her time at Exodus, Walterscheid noticed a change in her personal growth. “One of the things that I’ve noticed about myself in taking these classes is how important I am and how important (the kids) are and how important it is to put my family’s needs first,” she says. Walterscheid is no longer rushing toward the finish line as she did before. “Everything is in God’s time,” she says. “Whatever I’m going through, I may not see it’s leading me to the outcome I want, but I just got to sit through it. It’s leading me to the outcome I want.” Walterscheid graduates from Exodus this July. A few of her goals in the next chapter include becoming financially independent, finding a stable job and getting a car and home. Within herself, Walterscheid aims to continue her strong relationship with her faith. “When you start dealing with the real world, paying your bills and working every day and having kids, it’s so easy to fall away and get sidetracked,” she says. “Having a strong relationship with God brings peace of mind. I’m a better mom when I’m not worried and stressed out. I see what happened to myself when I fell away completely from God, and I don’t ever want to go back there.” The mom of three plans to continue working at Well Grounded Coffee and go back to school to get a massage therapy license. “Never let your past define you,” she says. “No matter what you’ve done, no matter who you’ve hurt. It’s never too late to rebuild a relationship. Never feel like you’re not worthy or good enough to have better and want more.”

elmont Addition residents Geyden and Barry Sage are the delighted landlords of an owl family. Their social media posts documenting the residents of their backyard owl house have brought joy to weary, pandemic-fatigued followers. It's ironic, then, that it all came about because of a neighbor who apparently didn't give a hoot. Back in late summer/early fall, the Sages started to notice unusually high rodent activity in the backyard. They chalked it up to restaurant closures but were determined to nip it in the bud. "We made sure to remove all possible attractants and hiding spaces," Geyden says, "and even stopped feeding the wild birds." Still, the rats persisted, so the Sages installed a camera, dubbed "Rat Cam," with the goal of learning rodent patterns and behaviors. Were they ever surprised when they viewed footage. "Our cameras caught a neighbor throwing rotten fruit, chicken bones, peanut butter and bird food over the fence," Geyden says. The obvious question: Why? Geyden laughs. "That's better covered in a book or a reality show." Confronted, the neighbor denied all knowledge, but the food flinging ceased immediately. Still, the Sages knew the rodents wouldn't magically disappear. Eschewing traditional pesticides, they opted for a more natural approach: a predator. Geyden says she learned about this remedy through her training as a Texas Master Gardener. "When you have a pest that is hard to control, you introduce a predator," she says.

Research led them to owls and they soon installed an owl house, purchased at the neighborhood Wild Birds Unlimited. The only modification was a small dowel Barry added to give the birds a perch near the entrance. Shortly after The Big Freeze in February, they had their first owl sighting, a fellow they identified as an Eastern Screech Owl. A male owl poked his head out of the house and sunbathed all day. They decided to move the "Rat Cam" and install it up in the tree with the idea that the newly named "Owl Cam" would give them insight into owl behavior, timing for owlets, and owl diet — would the owls have the rats over for dinner? Indeed they did. Within a couple of weeks, footage confirmed that a female had joined the

male owl, who spent dusk until dawn every night hunting for prey and feeding the goods, including plenty of juicy rats, to the female who poked her head out each night, watching expectantly for the deliveries. "We were surprised to see how hard he worked," Geyden says. "He brought her garden snakes, rats bigger than could fit in the hole, birds, worms, lizards, moths and some sort of grub-looking bugs." The Sages' rodent problem had disappeared. By now, the female had joined her mate in the nightly hunt for prey. "Larger prey like birds and rats were sometimes taken apart on the branches and fed to the young in small bites," say the non-squeamish Sages. Along with controlling the pesky rodent

population, the owls have been just plain entertaining for Geyden and Barry — and sometimes friends invited over for wine and owl watching. "The owls are not shy at all," Geyden says. "This makes them great to watch and hear. At dusk, they perch on the tree and any other structure in the backyard and act like they own the place." As night falls, the owls begin to fly, surveying the area. "They fly by very close to us and even perch around," she says. The owlets, too, pop their heads out, and on quiet nights can be heard practicing their screech call. The Sages' owl journey — which began bizarrely with peanut butter and chicken bones tossed into their yard — has become a source of joy. Geyden says, "Sometimes when the neighbors throw you rotten lemons — grapefruits in this case — you ought to make lemonade." he cicadas are coming! That was the headline in many papers a few weeks ago across the country. Big news. The 17-year cycle of the peculiar creatures that emerge from the ground, shed their outer shells and buzz around our patios is upon us. The reason they are news isn’t just that they come every 17 years; it’s that they symbolize the dependability of nature that hasn’t been disrupted by COVID-19 or climate change the way human life has. Signs of life abound this spring in Texas after more than a year of pandemic hibernation and then a snow apocalypse that added insult to injury. Many plants, bushes and trees have perished, but green shoots are emerging. A bird has nested with three newborns on the eave of my back porch. For people like me — religious professionals who are weary of preaching to a camera in an empty sanctuary — signs in nature are matched by plans to regather inside our buildings, even if we remain masked for a time. The Centers for Disease Control lifted restrictions on in-person gatherings for worship, weddings, funerals and the like about a month ago. Most of our houses of worship are beginning re-entry now. We are hopeful for the time to come when our tentative fist or elbow bumps turn into handshakes and hugs, when we can drop our judgments about the judgments of our neighbors regarding vaccinations and masks and social distancing, and instead see one another without trying to determine if they are good or bad because of whom they voted for or what news channel they frequent. Can we get there? Honestly, we

have to. The last book the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote was titled Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? That about summarizes it. We have a choice. We can choose to welcome the green shoots of vitality that emerge any time people look beyond differences to the soul of another, or we can allow the differences to define and divide us. How will it be for you when you go back to church or synagogue or mosque in the weeks ahead? Will you see your fellow worshippers as siblings of spirit, united in their common humanity and drawn together by a common faith, or will you carry the legacy of suspicion and fear from these politicized times into your spiritual communities? Religion is meant to unify, to bind people together around common beliefs and practices. Yes, one religion is delineated from another on the same basis. One denomination from another. But the force of identity that gives us a sense of belonging is not meant to overwhelm the force of neighborliness that is necessary for our common survival. Let’s let nature lead us for once. When we see signs of new life, the renewal of the earth and the promise of fecundity, let’s look upon one another in the same way, ever hopeful of what may yet be ahead for one and all.

HOME

ON TIME AND ON BUDGET Listen to Kitchen Design Concept’s clients talk about our whole-house remodeling work in the neighborhood: “Kitchen Design Concepts recently completed a major renovation of my kitchen, living room and dining room. I could not be happier with both the functionality and the aesthetic. My kitchen is beautiful and a pleasure to cook in. I particularly appreciate KDC’s planning and design process. Rebecca was exceptional and worked to get every aspect of the design just right. Any questions or concerns were always quickly addressed. Thank you for my dream kitchen!” — Lisa V., Lakewood
