SPN Radio host Ian Fitzsimmons was interviewing Charles Barkley when he heard his daughters yelling, “Dad! Dad! Dad!” They’d seen a creepy, crawling creature downstairs. “Mom was gone, and I’m waving my hands and screaming,” Fitzsimmons says. “It completely hijacked the conversation. Chuck was like, ‘Put them on the air.’ We’re friends, but if it had been a formal interview, we would have had problems.” The incident occurred pre-pandemic, before interrupted work calls became an accepted part of life. By the time the coronavirus hit, the Fitzsimmons household had already established a method to keep the kids from crashing any more interviews — an “On Air” sign outside his studio. “It was a game-changer,” Fitzsimmons says. “If it’s not on, all hell breaks loose. If the light is on, you could hear a mouse fart.” Since 2014, Fitzsimmons has worked out of his Lakewood home, where he records his weeknight show, “Freddie & Fitzsimmons.” ESPN has tried convincing the University of Alabama graduate to move to headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, but his family has roots in Dallas and is involved with several charitable organizations, such as the Exchange Club of East Dallas. “Family is here,” Fitzsimmons says, “and you can’t put a price tag on family.” You’ve worked from home for years. How was it different during the pandemic? Everyone was home with me. That was the biggest change. My youngest daughter had a great line. Two months into quarantine she said, “Twenty years from now when history teachers teach about COVID, the adults are going to say it was a hard time, but us kids are going to say we kind of dug it. I’ve never spent so much time with my family or did so much with my parents.”

What’s college football going to look like this year? It’s going to be different. You’re seeing it already. One guy is owed a big apology, and that’s Kirk Herbstreit. He was on my show on what was supposed to be the Opening Day of baseball. He comes on the air and throws a curveball. He says, “I don’t think we’re having football this year.” This is back in late March, and you had people coast to coast just bashing him. Nineteen times he said, “I pray I’m wrong.” He was the first one to say it and damn if he wasn’t right.

Tell me about growing up in New Orleans. My mom raised thoroughbred horses. Growing up on that farm was the greatest life lesson. We were mucking stables by the time we were 4. We mowed every blade of grass. Living in Lakewood, it’s comical that I’m out there edging and cutting grass. A guy pulled up and asked, “Do you have a card?” I’m like, “I live here. I’m cutting my grass.” He looked at me bewildered like, “You cut your own grass?” Why would you pay someone to do something you can do yourself ? Have you always loved sports? When [my brothers and I] came out of the womb, we were throwing a football or baseball. As a kid going to Saints games, [my brother and I] put bags on our heads when they were the Aints. My mom knocked the shit out of me. She said, “We are never embarrassed to pull for our team.” I’m trying to hold back tears while my brother october 2020

Why are sports important right now? After Katrina, the New Orleans Saints brought us back. They went to the NFC Championship and lost, but it gave us something we didn’t have before. It’s a word called “hope.” That’s what sports does. It gives you an escape.

What is your favorite sports memory? Watching my daughters play. I’ve never been more nervous in my entire life. Also broadcasting my first national championship.

Do you have any other positive takeaways from this year? The only good thing that’s come from 2020 is the social justice movement. It’s been beneficial and enlightening knowing that I have a forum where a lot of people are listening, and I have to be responsible with my words.

is laughing. My mom loves the Saints and wherever my brother coaches. He coached for the Lions, and one year, they played the Saints. My mom was like, “We know what’s happening in November. This is the one time we can root against the Saints.” My older brother was like, “To hell with that.” He pulled against his own brother.

How did you get involved in the Exchange Club? I got involved through Mike Looney. To put a smile on a kid’s face is one of the most gratifying things you can do. I was the emcee at the fundraiser a few years ago. I had an emergency appendectomy just days before, but Eric Nadel was the guest speaker. I was like, “I ain’t missing it.” I had a momentary lapse when I was emcee for Laura Bush. I said, “This event can’t start until every butt is in a seat.” I was like, “Ian, this is the first lady, not Dabo Swinney.” I look over, and she’s laughing. I mouthed, “I’m sorry.” The Exchange Club’s mission is to help public school children. Why is that important to you? If people send their kids to neighborhood schools, they will continue to get even better. My kids will go to J.L. Long and Woodrow. By the time my youngest daughter has graduated from Woodrow, my goal is to have a stadium. The Saints donate the turf from the Superdome to a local high school every year. Hey, Jerry [Jones], instead of throwing the field away, rip it up and give it to a local high school. At the top of the list should be one where there have been two Heisman Trophy winners. Any final thoughts? This is an unbelievable job. I pinch myself sometimes. Calling the national championship. Watching a friend coach. Watching my daughter make a diving save or a game-winning hit. It’s the beauty and power of sports from a little house in Lakewood. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

PROOF OF LIFE A father’s kidnapping as told through the 1994 video diaries of his son EAST DALLAS NEIGHBOR MILES HARGROVE never set out to create a documentary when his father was kidnapped by guerilla fighters in Colombia. Several months into hostage negotiations, he realized the circumstances were too remarkable not to document. He knew his dad would want to see it someday. So Miles picked up a camera and recorded events on cassette tapes over the next year as his family paid ransoms and worked with federal agents to secure the release of his father. Filming became a coping mechanism. Now, Miles has turned the footage into the documentary “Miracle Fishing” to probe

the family’s traumatic experience more than 25 years later. “Miracle Fishing” was supposed to debut in April at the Tribeca Film Festival, but the event was canceled because of the coronavirus. Since then, it has premiered virtually at a number of film festivals, including AFI Docs, Sidewalk Film Festival and Monmouth Film Festival, where it won best featured documentary. “It’s weird to relive the worst year of your life over and over,” Miles says. “It’s emotionally draining. There were so many times in the years leading to the final push when I doubted whether I could complete it. It’s been great to step back and go, ‘Wow,

a year or two ago, you weren’t in this place.’ I have to be proud of that accomplishment.” Miles’ father, agricultural journalist Tom Hargrove, was captured Sept. 23, 1994, by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. Guerillas had set up a makeshift roadblock in the Colombian countryside in the hopes of catching someone valuable. The practice is known as “pesca milagrosa,” or miracle fishing, which inspired the name of the film. In a ransom letter, guerillas demanded $6 million or else Tom would be executed. Miles, a sophomore at Texas Christian University at the time, flew to Colombia, where his parents had lived for three years.

SPOT THE LEOPARD GECKO Zane Buresh wanted a pet snake, but his mom didn’t have the stomach to feed it live mice. If he couldn’t have a snake, a leopard gecko was the next best thing. Unsure where to find a rescued reptile, the family went to a pet store, where it adopted 6-month-old Spot. That was nearly 15 years ago, and Spot has outlived all of the other pets. “I didn’t realize they lived that long,” Buresh’s mom, Laurel Hoitsma, says. “I said, ‘If that gecko is still alive, you’re taking him to college.’ But that didn’t happen. He stayed here with us. He’s so low maintenance.” The family was drawn to Spot because of his detailed markings. He has lots of spots — even for a leopard gecko — and the colors dim whenever he prepares to shed his skin, which he later eats for nutrients. Unlike dogs and cats, Spot doesn’t need a lot of human interaction, and the family keeps him in the tank so other pets don’t attack him. Instead, family members like to watch Spot hunt the crickets they feed him a couple times a week. “Everybody loves Spot,” Hoitsma says. “What they don’t love are the crickets. Dugg’s build-your-own menu has more than 20 options to customize a meal.

SIMPLE INGREDIENTS DONE RIGHT DUGG BURGER USES SIMPLICITY AND LOCALITY TO BECOME A DALLAS STAPLE “SIMPL E DONE E XCEP TIONAL” is the mantra Scott Terraciano-Spence and his business partners Jeff Braunstein and Martin Hennessy used to create Dugg Burger. After working in the corporate restaurant industry for years, they cultivated their own restaurant and came up with Dugg Burger, a build-your-own, go-down-the-line style of building a burger. The family friendly joint offers options for everyone. “Even though our menu is simple, we have something for burger and chicken lovers, salad eaters, gluten-free dieters and vegetarians,” Spence says. “We even have chalk available for kids to draw with on our brick wall.” The restaurant hones in on simplicity by doing a few things very well. Customers start by choosing a brioche bun or a bowl of mixed greens. Next comes the protein: beef, crispy or grilled chicken or a portabella mushroom. Next, customers can choose from five types of cheese and more than 15 condiments and vegetables. The restaurant offers a unique no mayo chili-lime slaw

and a custom Dugg Sauce. It is a Thousand Island base mixed with roasted garlic, capers and shallots. “One of our employees once described it as being ‘more like Ten Thousand Island dressing’ when he had it the first time,” Spence says. The name Dugg comes from the unique aspect of the burger. The top of each bun is “dugg” out, so all the toppings stay on the burger. Dugg uses the leftover bun to make its homemade bread pudding. The first location opened in Casa Linda in 2015. “We’ve had great success with our original unit in Casa Linda,” Spence says. “We’ve become ‘the neighborhood place’ there and felt that Preston Hollow offered the same opportunity.” Spence opened a second location in Preston Hollow Village amid the coronavirus pandemic. It’s been challenging to spread the word about the new restaurant, but Dugg modified its system to cater to customers despite restrictions. “We retooled the operation to focus on delivering food

to people’s cars so they could minimize their contact with the outside world,” Spence says. “And of course, we have become maniacally focused on sanitation and safety.” The restaurant is locally owned and operated and strives to be neighbors in its business areas. The eatery is also a local business supporter. “We rotate our beer, but right now, we offer Dallas Blonde, Mosaic IPA, Blood & Honey, Shiner Bock and Local Buzz,” Spence

says. “We also buy wine from a local producer, Times Ten Cellars. Other local products we buy are our buns from Empire Bakery and ice cream from Henry’s that goes in our hand-spun shakes.” As for future locations around Dallas: “Nothing on the horizon, but we always have our eyes open for the next Dugg,” Spence says. LOVE IN THE LAKEWOOD THEATER he wedding of Tamara Woodchek had all the glitz and glam of a Hollywood red-carpet event. In 2001, she and her husband tied the knot in a movie-themed wedding at the historic Lakewood Theater, where they celebrated their first Valentine’s Day together. “When we got engaged, we knew we weren’t going

We thought we’d check it out, and we had our ceremony and reception there.” Guests arrived with their tickets on a red carpet, where the bride’s sister interviewed them as they passed movie posters of the couple hanging in the windows. The interviews were streamed on the movie screen as guests found their seats in the theater, where every other row was covered with a long table. The ceremony started with a short movie that introduced the wedding party, who walked down the aisle as an onstage band performed songs from movies. Woodchek entered to the wedding march from “The Sound of Music.” “I had a hard time finding a dress,” Woodchek says. “I thought about a red ‘Gone with the Wind’ dress, but I couldn’t go through with it.” The reception was complete with cakes that looked like film reels. Today, the couple lives near White Rock Lake and has a painting of the theater in their home. When the seats were removed from the theater in 2015 to abate asbestos, the pair grabbed two that they plan to restore and keep as a memento from their special day. “It’s nice to have something nearby to remember that experience,” Woodchek says. “A lot of people tell me it’s one of the funnest weddings they’ve ever been to. It’s something different they hadn’t done before.”

BACKYARD BLISS our years ago, Julie Mandrell married her husband, Patrick, in an intimate backyard wedding at their 100-year-old airplane bungalow in Lakewood Heights. “We wanted something that was intimate, and we wanted to use our own home and be surrounded by our things,” she says. “The idea of being in a venue didn’t seem very personable.”

The DIY wedding was decorated primarily with the couple’s meaningful items — photographs from when they first met, a decorative plate, a ship painting by Patrick’s grandfather and antique bottles from his grandmother’s farm in Greenville. Other decorations, such as three antique doors, were salvaged from bulky trash and repurposed as the bar or an entry table topped with party favors. Casa View neighbor Jayme Ditto drew the invitations, which included elements representing Mandrell’s dad, brother and other loved ones who had died. For the ceremony, the bride was escorted by her uncle as she walked through the gate to the backyard. The couple married in front of their shed adorned with ivy and flowers. “I ordered my dress online. It was the first one I looked at,” Mandrell says. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt as beautiful in my entire life as I did that day.” The crowd of 50 close family and friends celebrated into the night with food provided by the Easy Slider food truck and coconut sour cream cake that Mandrell made herself using her grandmother’s recipe. The newlyweds, who met in 1992 at the University of North Texas, left the reception under a tunnel of sparklers. They peeled out in their 1972 Pontiac Firebird, drove around the block and came back to party some more. “It was the best day of my life,” Mandrell says. “It was so much fun. Everyone who came said it was the best wedding they’d ever been to.”

A HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL WEDDING essica Lopez is brewing a Halloween-themed wedding with her boo this October at Edison’s in the Cedars. The haunting holiday is the couple’s favorite, but it also has spiritual significance as part of the Day of the Dead celebration, which starts Oct. 31 and ends Nov. 2. “Halloween has a special place in my heart because of my culture,” Lopez says. “It is basically when we are the closest to our relatives who have passed. We always wished they’d be here for our wedding.” The couple plans to mix traditional, spiritual elements associated with Day of the Dead with the more commercial parts of Halloween.The bridal cake will be topped with skeletons and decorated with marigolds — the Day of the Dead flower that guides spirits to their altars with a strong scent and vibrant color — while the groom’s cake will depict the mask of Jason from “Friday the 13th.” “I want to make it festive, but it’s also a wedding,” Lopez says. “I’m not going to throw fake blood anywhere.” The bride-to-be is making her own centerpieces out of toilet paper and paper towel rolls, which she covers with black spray paint to create a dripping-candle effect. Thick spider webs will surround the base, and glowing red candles will be lit at the top. The use of fall colors, such as burgundy, dark red and black, will add to the gothic atmosphere. Other decorations include lanterns, manzanita tree branches with hanging votive candles and plenty of decorative skulls. The pair, who met on Match.com in 2014, are asking guests to wear themed masks and costumes.

ee Lewis always wanted an outdoor wedding, but she had lived in Texas long enough to know you can never depend on the weather. She opted for the next best thing — getting married under the stars in a climate-controlled environment at the Fort Worth Planetarium. “My wedding was so different and special,” Lewis says. “I still love my wedding. I’d do it the same way today.” A celestial ceremony wasn’t always written in the stars for the couple. Lewis and her husband grew up together on Anita Street, but in high school, he dated her best friend. One day, their connection clicked, and they decided to marry in 2004. It seemed like fate that the pair, who lived in the Stardust apartments on Gaston Avenue, should have an out-of-this-world wedding, which they announced with star invitations. The ceremony took place in a round theater at the planetarium. Seats were moved to the side to create an aisle that Lewis walked down with her mom. The projector was turned off during the ceremony, but once the couple was pronounced man and wife, shooting stars, comets and asteroids flew through the night sky on the theater’s walls. The couple extended the extraterrestrial theme to the reception with star-shaped food served on plates decorated with star stickers. After eschewing a traditional venue, perhaps it’s no surprise that the Lewises also decided to forgo the bouquet and garter toss. Instead, the couple gave those tokens to the guests who had been married the longest. “We tried to make it super special for everybody, not just us,” Lewis says. “We took the time to make it about family. That’s why people have appreciated it for so long.”

Starting the Next Chapter A neighbor’s multicultural book club is multiplying to confront social issues across Dallas

For years, Pam Fields has worked tirelessly through her nonprofit to bring diverse individuals together through programs and events designed to encourage cross-cultural understanding. But keeping the fight against racism can be exhausting, and she needed an outlet to share her struggles and experiences without the burden of leadership. She found allies in the Multicultural Women’s Book Group. East Dallas neighbor Jean McAulay and Oak Cliff resident Shannon Cerise started the group in 2017 after attending the Questions of Color panel hosted by The Dallas Morning News following the killing of five police officers at a Black Lives Matter march in 2016. After hearing people of color share their experiences at the event, they sat in the parking lot thinking, “We lead such segregated lives.” They wanted to continue the conversation. As members of the Dallas

Institute of Humanities and Culture, where the panel discussion occurred, they utilized the organization’s email list and social media channels to recruit new members throughout Dallas. The group is open to anyone, regardless of race, age, religion or sexual orientation, but membership is restricted to women. “We don’t have anything against men, but we feel women, most often, are the community builders,” McAulay says. “They forge relationships with neighbors.” Each meeting starts with an icebreaker activity, followed by a poem and book discussion. The group started with “American Dervish,” which tells the story of a Pakistani-American boy who struggles with his identity and religion while growing up in the Midwest. Other books have delved into race, white privilege, immigration and politics. The books generate conversation about difficult social issues that sometimes cause

perspectives to clash. The first discussion of Robin DiAngelo’s controversial book “White Fragility” was so contentious, members had to pause and regroup for a second discussion at a later date. Ground rules for respectful participation keep most meetings civil, however. Members are asked to practice the pause if the conversation becomes tense or emotional and to assume the best in each other. If someone says something insensitive, members are encouraged to teach without reprimanding. “I’m developing muscles about how to talk about race, not just understand it,” Cerise says. “I don’t think it’s ever going to be easy, but I’m finding words and language to go along with it.” Yet reading and discussing books aren’t the sole purpose of the group. It was never meant to be an intellectual pursuit, McAulay says. It’s about building relationships that create real community change. Ladies meet regularly outside of book club to go bowling or attend lectures. “The more cross-cultural relationships we build, the better we understand, the more our hearts and minds are transformed and we can be advocates for each other,” Fields says. Membership is intentionally kept small. When new women want to join, McAulay and Cerise connect those people and help them establish their own book groups. A second chapter that meets at Southern Methodist University formed about a year ago, and a third chapter started in Lakewood in August. Interest in the Multicultural Women’s Book Group grew after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police in late May. His slaying ignited a racial reckoning and spawned mass protests across the country. “Especially among white women, we saw a strong interest in learning more,” McAulay says. “We can be amazingly clueless on issues of race and the experiences of people of color in whitedominant culture. The protests and the murder of George Floyd brought that to the fore. The next step is, ‘How do I make this better?’” Lakewood neighbor Jeanne Segrest, an original member of the Multicultural Women’s Book Group, posted about the group on Lakewood Facebook pages to gauge community interest in starting a neighborhood chapter. “For a long time, I had been feeling tension like, ‘Why are we not talking about this?’” Segrest says. “I wanted to scream out the window every time something happened. It’s a hard conversation to have, but we have to push through that uncomfortable feeling.” St. John’s Episcopal mom Tunisia Blanca says she wanted to join the book club after Floyd’s death to share her experiences as a Black woman. “I couldn’t believe as a country we had gotten to a place where people stood around and watched and did nothing,” Blanca says. “I never considered myself an activist, but I thought of myself as someone who spoke up about what’s wrong. I thought, ‘I’ve got to do more.’ I want to lend my voice and give my perspective.” Everyone in the group serves as an active participant by volunteering to bring snacks, selecting the books or leading discussion. Discussions focus on listening and learning from personal experiences, not trying to change opinions. Engaging in the experiences of others is the best way to recognize personal biases and advocate for systemic change, members say. The women put their money where their mouths are. After reading “Just Mercy,” the story of a lawyer who founded the Equal Justice Initiative to defend the unjustly accused, they collected money and sent a donation to the organization. “I’m just happy for the new group,” Segrest says. “I want it to keep spreading. arly voting begins this month and culminates on Election Day, Nov. 3. In the 2016 general election, only six out of 10 eligible voters cast ballots, and COVID-19 could have a dampening effect on turnout. Texas is one of seven states that has rejected expansion of voting by mail for those concerned about exposure to the virus. No one doubts that one person — one vote — is at the heart of democracy. To vote is to participate in an exercise that extends our democratic republic. But does faith add additional burden to vote in civil elections? Cantor Shoshana Brown rightly writes: “As far as Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism go, none of these faiths have sacred scriptures that explicitly address the issue of voting — for the simple reason that all these faiths sprung up and developed in places and eras when people tended to be ruled by monarchs, emperors or other leaders who were not selected by the people at large.” The Constitution permits every citizen to vote, and the Bill of Rights ensures religious liberty. Perpetuating our historic experiment in freedom has religious implications even if our sacred texts lack explicit mandates about executing that democratic right. Still, we can extrapolate from biblical texts. While Jews and Christians in different ways have understood themselves throughout history as resident aliens in the world, seeking their true homeland in the age to come, both texts and contexts have urged political participation. While in captivity in Babylon, Israel was enjoined to “seek the welfare of the

city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare, you will find your welfare.” Likewise, Christians were commanded to “pray for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” No perfect kings or people in high positions have ever existed, so faithful Americans shouldn’t claim conscientious objection to voting. We have always had only sinners on the ballot. If I were running for office, I would have holy reticence about voting for myself given what I know about my character. Even so-called value voters who rush to the polls to cast ballots for people they enthusiastically support should recognize that their candidates are only human and can never deliver on all they have promised. One principle pervades all religious traditions: Love your neighbor as yourself. That means faith-based voting shouldn’t focus on self-interest or group interest. It should attend to what is good for all, crossing strata of race, religion class and culture. In the end, we will have no one but ourselves to blame for the country or community we get if we fail to vote (assuming no foreign intervention). See you at the polls. The masked heroes among us You don’t have to be Wonder Woman to save lives

don’t know about everybody else, but I am officially done with this pandemic. D.O.N.E. This whole shelter-in-place, social distancing, online school thing is not good for a travel-obsessed, extroverted mom who wants her children out of the house. Although perennially staying at home, not putting my arms around a friend and seeing my kids 24/7 are challenges, it’s the mask wearing that I find the most cumbersome. In addition to not being good for my skin, I find it difficult to breathe, often feeling claustrophobic. The biggest challenge is recognizing people when I do venture out. I truly hope I am never a secret witness to a heinous crime because there is no way I would be able to recognize anyone in a lineup. Put a face mask on the suspect, and the bad guy is for sure getting away. T h e w o m e n i n my f a m i l y a r e generationally klutzy. The mask, which blocks my downward peripheral vision, has not helped and has resulted in tripping even more than usual on our crappy sidewalks and streets. Sadly, my mom and daughter have experienced the same fate. On the plus side, I was able to find a comfortable mask that fits my child-sized face. I take solace that my face mask hides my nose — an insecurity I’ve had since I was a child. I can pretend I was blessed with a perfect Roman proboscis and go forth in public, unencumbered by diffidence. Perhaps the biggest benefit of all is that I know I’m saving lives. I’m not suggesting I’m Wonder Woman or Elastigirl, but who doesn’t have a slight hero complex?

I appreciate the efforts of others to save lives as well. I will walk happily into any establishment that demands I wear a mask or else entry will be forbidden. Accepting something that gives me huge discomfort comes from the fact that I don’t think it is my God-given right to not wear a face mask.

I’m not suggesting I’m Wonder Woman or Elastigirl, but who doesn’t have a slight hero complex?” There is little difference in wearing a condom to prevent your partner from getting an STD and wearing a face mask so the masses don’t continually spread a contagion that is causing sickness, death, sadness, closures of long-held establishments, historic unemployment and the near collapse of the world economy. Discomfort is a small price to pay. And, like many things that cause irritation, all it takes is a bit of getting used to. Case in point: Mask in tow, I recently did a large grocery run at the Kroger on Mockingbird. It was the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, which was an absurd day to go to the store. In addition to my long list, there was a large number of fellow shoppers — not like the throngs on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, but certainly more than

I had seen in quite some time. I donned my mask as I walked out of my air-conditioned car and into the humid environs. Although I realize no one wants the visual, my face under my mask was dripping with sweat as I walked into the store. I, of course, wore the mask the entire time I shopped. That wasn’t such a great feat, I know. The big accomplishment for me was that I totally forgot I was wearing it. I even tried to take a sip from the coffee tumbler I brought with me into the store out of habit, not realizing my mouth was fully covered, as well as my nose because that is how we’re supposed to wear it. Like many, if not all of us, I long for the days we all took for granted — shaking hands, blowing out candles to celebrate a birthday and hugging a close friend extra tight after a few too many. When we finally get to the other side of this, who knows what it will look like? If we have extremely short-term memories, we’ll go back to our carefree ways of not obsessively washing our hands and not minding a bit of someone else’s spittle on a slice of birthday cake. If we’re smart, we’ll remember we could have managed this so much better than we did. A little sacrifice goes a long way. Staying inside, waving a greeting, Zooming to school and wearing a face mask are nothing compared to the damage that was done by flouting the science.
