Before the pandemic, before racial injustice protests, I chose words that are so relevant right now. It’s easy to see the negative, but I like to shine a light on things that make people feel good, even if it’s only three words. — SHARON BRIDGES, FOUNDER OF KINDFETTI Read more about Bridges’ encouraging yard signs at lakewood.advocatemag.com. WE CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT Batch plants. The Dallas City Council denied approval for a special use permit for concrete and asphalt batch plants at Zacha Junction. A spokesman for the applicants, Martin Marietta and Austin Bridge, argued that the site’s rail service would reduce heavy truck traffic during the reconstruction of Interstate 635 East. However, many neighbors persuaded the Council by saying the plants would reduce property values and cause pollution.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY Rae and Lloyd Marquis met in Lakewood 50 years ago. For their anniversary, they sent $50 to 50 family members and friends. As they began sending money, their list grew to 73 close friends. Along with the $50, the couple sent a letter explaining that recipients should use the money “for good.”

hat do spunky 21-year-olds, seasoned 70-year-olds and everyone in between have in common? There's an intense love for this neighborhood blues bar The Goat, where live music, jukebox jams, billiards and good conversation, unfold in a dimly lit haven every day of the week. When you open the red wooden door, chances are a whiff of freshly brewed coffee will hit one nostril while a chilled glass of Pabst Blue Ribbon enters the other. The Goat is the only place in Dallas where a morning routine peacefully overlaps with traditional bar shenanigans. The 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. hours cater to absolutely anyone. Fresh off the night shift, it’s the morning crowd’s 5 o’clock. Sunrise bargoers enjoy their drinks and company before catching up on sleep. On their way out, they may see the noon regulars, who come for a light sip on lunch breaks. Early afternoon regulars stay until dinnertime. Variations of these ins-and-outs happen all day and night, leaving the late-night regulars to finish off the mixed nuts and request one more tune on the jukebox before closing.

The Goat has held its ground in East Dallas as the bar scene evolved. Originally called the Office Club in the 1970s, Lota Dunham bought the bar with a specific vision. She loved Pontiac GTOs, a car often called “the goat” because of its reputation to eat anything on the street, and wanted her dream car on top of the bar. The plan didn’t work, so she settled for the animal as the bar’s official mascot. Lota’s Goat was the name during the ’80s and ’90s until Sandy and Bill Weiss renamed it The Goat in 2004. Sandy died, and Bill has remained the owner. The bar’s ambience attracts a coterie of regulars who live across the country. Leslie Zinn resides in New Jersey and visits The Goat on every trip to Dallas. “My daughter took me to The Goat when I was in town visiting a few years ago, and I fell in love with the place,” Zinn says. “Great live music, dancing and a fun environment with a laid-back and diverse crowd keeps this Jersey girl coming back whenever I’m in town.” Karaoke night, a relatively new addition, brings people from all

over Dallas on Sunday evenings for their chance at the mic. Karaoke nights have garnered an international reputation. It’s so popular that travelers from Germany show up to belt their favorite tunes. Locals and travelers rave about The Goat, but the musicians who perform there bring another level of passion. Greg Walling is a longtime band member of The Boogie Men, a group that plays blues, funk and classic rock to make people dance. Playing on The Goat’s Buddy Guy-inspired polka dot stage since 2006, Walling recalls the pure joy of performing for such a quirky crowd.

“The best thing about The Goat is their people.” “I’ve seen lawyers dressed in their pressed, business-casual clothes sitting at the bar with a guy in painter’s overalls, talking about life and listening to music,” Walling says. The Boogie Men thrive on the crowd’s dancing and cheering. “You can tell the crowd listens and really loves the music,” Walling says. “The best thing about The Goat is their people.” The Goat temporarily closed because of the coronavirus.

ALL BARK, NO BITE: MURPHY IS A PROTECTOR WITH A BIG HEART Murphy Stout is a Great Dane that will guard her family from even the most harmless of materials: the mail. Owner Leslie Rauscher says Murphy is very defensive of the front door and did not take a liking to the mailman. Every time he slipped the mail through the door, she tore it up. The Rauschers opted for an outside mailbox but kept a touch of Murphy by putting a black silhouette of a Great Dane on it. Murphy’s owners gave her up when she was 6 months old. Murphy had abandonment issues and didn’t respond well to potential families until she met the Rauschers. They brought her back to their Lakewood home and named her after Murphy’s Irish Stout because of her appearance. She fell in love with the family and became their protector and best friend. “When she trusts you, she pours her whole heart out,” Rauscher says. “She just loves hard.” — MARGARET O’ROURKE GOT A PET YOU WANT US TO FEATURE? DESIGN LIVING BEAUTIFULLY IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

P I N K P OW E R Every day is Wednesday at the viral XOXO Dining Room Story by JEHADU ABSHIRO | Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO

X

OXO Dining Room is unapologetically Instagramable. There are oversized Champagne buckets, pink crushed-velvet booths with Champagne bells, crystal-beaded trees and art-déco chandeliers. The backdrop is hot pink. When managing partner Maria Lagios told her partners she wanted a bright pink dining room, they weren’t so sure. But one viral Tik Tok video later, the restaurant has steady traffic despite a soft open, limited capacity and a pandemic. “People have come in because of that video, even from San Antonio and further,” Lagios says. “It’s shocking to me.” A Dallas food-industry mainstay, Lagios noticed a dearth

20 lakewood.advocatemag.com

of upscale restaurants and bars catering to women. XOXO is owned by a woman and managed by women. She originally intended the dining room to be a girls’ night out spot for 25- to 45-year-old women. “In reality, that’s really not the case because the venue was designed for everyone,” Lagios says. Everyone over the age of 21, that is. The restaurant hosts a DJ Thursday through Sunday in the pink dining room. Everyone from girl gangs to couples comes for a night out. The 22,000-squarefoot space also includes Mr. X, a members-only speakeasy. “I wanted to create something that had a different energy than a normal restaurant,” Lagios says. “I want it to be an experience.

For Maria Lagios, the Champagne and pink furniture are classic staples.

I want you to be impressed by everything.” Lagios was inspired by millennial-pink spots, such as London’s Sketch and Deep Ellum’s Petal Pushers. A Dallas artist painted the building’s hot pink exterior mural and the dark graffitied bathrooms. Another artist hand-painted the layered palm print mural that anchors the pink room. “The vibe is just uplifting,” says Lagios, who worked on the look with design firm Duncan and Duncan. While XOXO is for rosé Champagne and selfies, Mr. X is for scotch and burlesque. Hidden by a bookshelf and accessed by a phone number, the room features tufted red booths, peacock wallpaper and vintage art. “Some women may not like this dining room,” Lagios says. “It’s visually girly, but the speakeasy is not. It’s cool and clean.” A third dining area is being created from the building’s original patio and pool. The garden will feature the same pink velvet booths and the “Press for Champagne” button. The hope is to quickly complete the remodel and offer coronavirus-friendly open-air seating. “We still haven’t even perfected our service and our menu,” Lagios says. “We’re getting closer and closer. The demand,

DID YOU KNOW? XOXO’s Champagne bell is Tik Tok famous, but it doesn’t actually function. Don’t worry. There’s plenty of bubbly. The drink menu includes the F Boy, which is initially sweet then turns sour. “Everything needs to make somebody feel happy, even if that’s just the name of the drink,” says Lagios.

London’s famous Sketch restaurant, known for its extravagant booths and walls, inspired this new Dallas hotspot.

especially from social media, is pushing us faster to do that.” Curated by executive chef Zach Warner, the evolving menu features shareable options, such as arancini with truffle and a vegetarian “impossible” meatballs pasta dish with semolina, broccolini and Parmesan. Designed for diverse appeal, entrees range from an “unwedged” salad to a 22-ounce ribeye for $70. A newly added

22 lakewood.advocatemag.com

august 2020

shareable is a grilled avocado dish with crème fraiche, pomegranate and trout roe. “I think the food gets a little overshadowed sometimes by how beautiful the venue is,” Lagios says. “We went all out when it comes to the kitchen. The menu is very eclectic, but it’s kind of just a play on classics that people love.” The restaurant is operating on limited hours with service starting at 6 p.m. As

coronavirus-related restrictions lift, the plan is to expand the hours and host an official grand opening. Located on the edge of Deep Ellum, XOXO is meant to draw people into the neighborhood. “I love the neighborhood so much,” Lagios says. “It’s somewhat of an artsy feeling already here, and I love that we’ve been able to fit into that and bring something fresh, new and exciting.”

Mr. X cocktail lounge features vintage art, red booths and a stage for performances.

Ted Cruz clapped back with, “Bless your hearts” on Twitter. Any fool knows Texans don’t need to leave their state, or even their neighborhood, to find the best barbecue in the world. So loosen your belts for a ’cue tour of East Dallas. Bring your appetite, your wallet and plenty of patience. With food this good, you’ll have to wait in line. SMOKY ROSE Central Texas brisket might be the Champagne equivalent of the barbecue world, but Smoky Rose pitmaster Shane Snow has plenty to offer with his particular brand of Northeast Texas barbecue. “Everyone is more Central Texas style, but I’m running away from that,” Snow says. “It all tastes the same. Somebody has to be brave and do it differently.” Unlike in Central Texas, Snow seasons the meat with more than just salt and pepper, and he cooks it like they do in East Texas — slowly until it falls off the bone. The tenderness makes it easy to chop and put in sandwiches. There’s no worshipping beef at Smoky Rose, and no one will judge if you want to try it with sauce. Smoky Rose has three: a house-made barbecue, a Sriracha barbecue and a Carolina gold. Trying the brisket is a must, of course, but Snow says the pork belly burnt ends will wow you. The smoked salmon and the smoked turkey BLT with gouda, avocado and garlic aioli on sourdough are also favorites. Snow cut his teeth on the barbecue competition circuit and aims to incorporate the enhanced preparation and selective trimming techniques into the barbecue served at restaurants. When Smoky Rose opened on Garland Road in 2016, it catered to the gourmet side of barbecue. Snow has since simplified the menu. “I was pushing a simpler menu, something you can execute well every day,” he says. “The stuff coming out of the kitchen now is the best we’ve ever done.” Smoky Rose, 8602 Garland Road

LAKEWOOD SMOKEHOUSE Lakewood Smokehouse serves traditional Texas barbecue, plus a whole lot more. Meat plates of brisket, pulled pork and turkey are still a go-to at the restaurant, but the eatery has a large menu of items that feature its smoked meats. The restaurant’s smokehouse burgers are a meat lover’s dream. King of them all is The Elvis, a burger topped with an onion ring filled with chopped brisket and barbecue sauce. Or try one of the Texas-sized sandwiches. The savory meats aren’t any less tasty sandwiched between two slices of bread. The Pitmonster, piled high with a combination of sausage, brisket, pulled pork or turkey, is a favorite — along with the Cuban. Believe it or not, there are vegetarian options, including many of the house-made signature sides, such as the cheesy corn bake, sautéed green beans, barbecue beans and fries. Load those up with meat to create brisket nachos or a brisket baked potato. “We use the best ingredients we can find,” partner Andrew Golden says. “I’m a crazy person when it comes to quality standards.” Lakewood Smokehouse is one of the few true ’cue restaurants in the heart of Lakewood. Before it opened, the neighborhood was painfully devoid of barbecue. That’s the main reason John Hall, John Pantenburg and Mike Mullen picked the location in the Lakewood Shopping Center in 2016. “People have memories tied to food,” Golden says. “If we do our job right, we get to make people happy.” Lakewood Smokehouse, 1901 Abrams Road

“ W H AT Y O U G E T I S LIKE A PIECE OF BLACK GOLD.”

T E R RY B L A C K ’ S BARBECUE Born and raised in Lockhart — the barbecue capital of Texas — Mark Black brings the best of Central Texas barbecue to Dallas. Black grew up smoking meat at the family business, Black’s Barbecue, which his great-grandfather started in 1932. A feud split the family in 2014, and now, the fourth-generation pitmaster is replicating that success at Terry Black’s Barbecue. The first location opened in Austin in 2014 and was quickly named one of Texas Monthly’s top 50 barbecue joints. It was so successful that the family decided to expand to Dallas in 2019. “I said, ‘If I’m going to do another restaurant, I have to pick a place that I like,’” Black says. “Dallas is the quintessential Texas city. We went to Deep Ellum and fell in love with the culture and vibe. It had a local feel.” The market-style restaurant, which sells by the pound, is all about

32 lakewood.advocatemag.com

august 2020

the beef. The brisket is cooked over 14 hours and rotated throughout the day to different temperature zones until it’s perfectly flavored with a kiss of smoke and a peppery bark. Terry Black’s is known for moist brisket, but it’s the giant beef rib — the Rolls-Royce of barbecue — that keeps people coming back. Try it with classic Texas sides, such as cream corn, Mexican rice, cole slaw or baked potato salad. “We want people who have never had Central Texas barbecue to see what it’s about,” Black says. “What you get is like a piece of black gold.” All the meat is seasoned with a salt-and-pepper rub and cooked in five 1,000-gallon smokers that are visible from the large dining room or outdoor patio. Ask about a tour of the pit to learn more about Terry Black’s smoking techniques. “We don’t have any secrets,” Black says. “We want to show everyone what we’re doing.” Terry Black’s Barbecue, 3025 Main St.

PECAN LODGE Justin and Diane Fourton didn’t intend to set the barbecue world on fire when they left their corporate jobs to start Pecan Lodge at the Dallas Farmers Market in 2010. After rising to the No. 2 spot on Texas Monthly’s list of top 50 barbecue joints, they earned statewide — and, thereby, worldwide — renown. But the Fourtons have always considered Pecan Lodge a Dallas restaurant. “When we were forced to leave the Dallas Farmers Market, we had offers from other cities, but it was important to stay in the community and be supportive,” pitmaster Justin Fourton says. Smoking the competition meant the M Streets neighbors needed a larger space. They moved the restaurant to Deep Ellum, and the crowds followed. Expect to wait in line for a bite of this carnivorous cake. It’s not hard to understand why the food at Pecan Lodge stands out. The meat is cooked using traditional wood-fire methods that Fourton learned on his grandfather’s ranch in Abilene. The moist brisket melts in your mouth, while the lean portion is still tender and flavorful. Fourton has never shied away from seasoning, and it shows in the sweet glaze that covers his juicy pork ribs. From beef ribs to pulled pork and smoked turkey, there are so many meat options that it’s tempting to neglect the sides. They’re worth saving room for. Try the mac and cheese flecked with green chilies and bacon bits or the crispy fried okra. “We want to have people come eat and come back years later and have it be just as good,” Fourton says. Pecan Lodge, 2702 Main St.

DE C A DE N T DE S SE R T S Bust out your stretchy pants for these super-rich treats Story by JAIME DUNAWAY

When it comes to dessert, more is always better. So pour the chocolate drizzle, put a cherry on top and indulge in these lavish last courses.

Joy Macarons makes homemade ice cream to create frozen macaron sandwiches. Opposite page: The CinnaBrownie features cinnamon ice cream with a brownie inside. Photography by Kathy Tran

LIZ LANIER had so much egg yolk that she didn’t know what to do with it. She needed only the whites for her confections at Joy Macarons, but she hated wasting the yolks. So she started using them to make a custard-based ice cream and placed a scoop between two macaron shells. The

macaron ice cream sandwich was born. “It wasn’t long before we realized people thought they were special,” Lanier says. “We became known for having them.” The most popular flavor is Cereal Milk, infused with Fruity Pebbles and topped with a crunchy chocolate shell that contrasts the soft, chewy cookie. The cereal, like everything at Joy Macarons, is gluten free, so it’s safe to eat — unless you’re dieting. Also try the cookies and cream, sprinkled with homemade cookies called Joy-reos, or the CinnaBrownie with a brownie puck tucked inside cinnamon ice cream. The flavor of the month highlights a quirky concoction, such as a king cake with a baby hidden in the middle. In addition to ice cream sandwiches, the patisserie sells macarons in 12 flavors, including cookie dough, salted caramel and honey lavender. Joy Macarons started as a hobby

that spun out of control, Lanier says. Despite simple ingredients, macarons are notoriously hard to make. “They’re temperamental,” she says. “It takes a lot of time and preciseness. We make so many every day, and there are still days that you’re like, ‘What happened?’ Everything has to go according to plan.” Lanier kept practicing and sold them at pop-ups and area farmers markets. In 2015, she opened her first shop in Oak Cliff, followed by a location on Lower Greenville in 2017. “I have a huge sweet tooth, but I didn’t always want a slice of cake or a cupcake,” Lanier says. “It’s kind of a lot. The macarons are small and hit the spot without doing too much damage. The ice cream sandwiches are different. You have to be committed. The macarons on the outside are a great pairing, and they’re not overly sweet. They let the ice cream shine through.”

VA L’ S C H E E S E CA K E S VALERY JEAN-BART made cheesecakes with his mom every Sunday for four years while she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. When she died in August 2012, Jean-Bart had all the recipes from their weekly ritual and emailed countless restaurant owners, begging them to taste his cakes. He got his shot with former Oddfellows owner Matt Spillers, who asked him to bring one to try. Jean-Bart brought 16. After tasting them, Spillers decided to carry the cakes at two of his establishments. Jean-Bart spent the next two years moonlighting as a baker after his day job at a civil engineering firm. He baked in the basement of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and sold cheesecakes to restaurants until opening his own bakery on Maple Avenue in 2015. A location on Greenville Avenue followed in 2017. “I would do everything under the sun to keep my mom’s business alive — except for killing and drugs and illicit stuff,” JeanBart says. The cheesecakes are light and not overly sweet. Jean-Bart’s mom was diabetic, so

their recipes reduced the sugar. In fact, the ingredient list is quite small, with no fillers, gelatins or preservatives. “It’s a basic recipe, but it’s all in the way we process,” Jean-Bart says. “It’s the minutes spent mixing. Every ingredient has an order. It’s a top secret one.” Jean-Bart recommends the classic strawberry cheesecake, the red velvet, banana pudding or cookies and cream. For an indulgent treat, try the chocolate turtle made with Oreo crust, black forest cheesecake, caramel sauce, chocolate ganache and pecans. Or try the BAE with a graham cracker crust and classic cheesecake filled with rich vanilla pudding. It’s drizzled with caramel sauce and topped with candied pecans made from scratch.

H Y P N OT I C E M P O R I U M PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD come to Hypnotic Emporium in the hopes of completing one of Dallas’ craziest dessert challenges. Twenty flavors of ice cream are scooped into a Texas-sized bowl and loaded with whipped cream, caramel, hot fudge, cherries, sprinkles and any other topping the soda fountain has in stock. It’s topped with Charleston Chew bars and a Hypnotic Donuts pastry for good measure. Anyone willing to risk a massive brain freeze must finish the bowl in 25 minutes or get stuck with a bellyache and a $35 bill. “We had a film crew from Japan, and they put an ad in Craigslist for two people to be in the ice cream challenge,” co-owner Shelley Lobona says. “They filmed it for Japanese TV, although I never got to see it.” Not brave enough to try this gut-busting test? Hypnotic Emporium has plenty of unique desserts to “shake” the summer heat. One of the most popular flavors is the s’mores — made with chocolate ice cream topped with chocolate drizzle, whipped cream, marshmallow fluff and toasted marshmallows. Staff members meet regularly to brainstorm ideas for the next crazy concoction. One of the most memorable

creations was The Unicorn, a colorful blend of sour blue raspberry, white chocolate, cotton candy, unicorn-shaped marshmallows and purple sprinkles. Hypnotic Emporium also has its version of the ice cream sandwich. The ooey-gooey mess comes with three toppings and can include vanilla or chocolate doughnuts from Hypnotic Donuts or any combination of homemade cookies. All the ice cream comes from

“I’m a huge ice cream person, and when we bought [Hypnotic Emporium], I was adamant that we had to have good ice cream,” she says. “We want to make it a destination.”

“We want to make it a destination.” Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream in Denton. Many flavors are rotated seasonally so customers can get a taste of pumpkin pie or peppermint during the holidays. One specialty is a honey lavender flavor called the Bee’s Knees that is a favorite among East Dallas neighbors because of their proximity to the Arboretum, Lobona says.

TACO TELEPHONE HEED THESE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MOST DELICIOUS GAME OF “TELEPHONE” YOU’LL EVER PLAY Story and photography by CLAIRE CROW

TACO LOVERS are everywhere in East Dallas. Whether you’re brunching, lunching or looking for a late-night bite, local taco shops are there for you. So how do you find the best tacos in the neighborhood? We started a game of “Taco Telephone” and asked some of your favorite taco shops where they would eat tacos, other than their own business. Here’s what they said:

RUSTY TACO RUSTY TACO is known for its creative street-style tacos — especially the Baja shrimp taco, a tortilla filled with crispy or grilled shrimp and topped with creamy Baja sauce, red cabbage and cilantro. 4802 Greenville Ave. 214-613-0508 rustytaco.com

RUSTY TACO SUGGESTION:

VELVET TACO VELVET TACO serves tacos with a twist. From the Nashville hot tofu taco to the Buffalo chicken taco with house Buffalo sauce, Danish blue cheese, ranch crema, carrots and micro celery, there’s an option for everyone. 3012 N. Henderson Ave. 214-823-8358 velvettaco.com

TORCHY’S SUGGESTION:

TACOS LA BANQUETA TACOS LA BANQUETA serves authentic street tacos. At any given time of day, hungry neighbors overflow out of the joint as they order steak, suadero, chicken, pork, lengua, chorizo and breakfast tacos, plus more. 7233 Gaston Ave. 214-324-4445

VELVET TACO SUGGESTION:

TACO JOINT TACO JOINT has been a neighborhood staple since 2012. The Taco Joint raves about The Evan, a wheat tortilla filled with black beans, rice, guacamole, tomatoes, salad mix and Monterey Jack cheese. 6434 E. Mockingbird Lane 214-821-8226 thetacojoint.com

TACO JOINT SUGGESTION:

TORCHY’S TACOS TORCHY’S TACOS’ fried avocado taco is full of fried avocado. Toppings include refried pinto beans, pico de gallo, lettuce, cheese and poblano sauce on a corn tortilla. 9440 Garland Road 972-354-8226 torchystacos.com

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

By PATTI VINSON

A succa for plants How gardens take root under our neighbor’s care

M

ark Painter is chatting with visitors while hoeing weeds at the Geneva Heights Elementary garden when he pauses, bends down, picks up a black plastic bag wrapped around an okra plant and frowns. “Look at this.” This plastic, along with any other disregard for the environment, is a pet peeve of his. The beloved founder of the 20,000-square-foot garden at Mockingbird Elementary retired six years ago but has continued to quietly contribute to the neighborhood and protect the environment in a variety of ways. In fact, he begins each day with a simple act: picking up trash as he walks his dog, Cosmos, a stray that was living under a portable at Mockingbird Elementary. For the early morning strolls, he carries two plastic bags: one for Cosmos and one for random trash he sees littering the streets and alleys of his Lakewood Heights neighborhood. He easily fills a bag with small plastic pieces from car parts, cable wires, construction litter, electronics and some pieces he can’t identify. “Plastic never goes away,” he says. “It just weathers into smaller particles. If I pass some on the street, I have no choice but to pick it up.” He sees cardboard, Styrofoam, plastic film and bubble wrap, which is on the rise because of online shopping, and is frustrated. “Much or most of it will end up in the ocean if it’s not collected and disposed of properly,” Painter says. After these walks, he adds Cosmos’ contribution to his compost and the plastics to his recycling bin. A couple days a week he heads over to Geneva Heights Elementary, where he tends to the burgeoning garden, hoeing the ever-present weeds, checking potatoes for bugs and keeping a watchful eye on

pinto bean pods. He volunteered for the job a few months ago when he was driving Neil Sperry by and noticed that Howard Garrett the garden might be E.O. Wilson in need of attention. Robert Rodale Painter has a long Gene Logsdon history of gardening, Wendell Berry Sir Albert Howard beginning as a child on Charles Walters the family acreage in F.H. King Frisco, which was little Edward Hyams more than a farming community back in the day. He remembers helping his father weed the large family garden, where they grew potatoes, okra, beans, cucumbers and plenty of vegetables. He was still in high school when he stumbled upon Organic Gardening magazine and the writings of Robert Rodale, Sir Albert Howard and others. “They led me to compost, organic matter and nutrient cycles,” he says.

Armed with an elementary education degree from the University of Texas in 1971, Painter tried his hand at teaching, but he lasted only six weeks. Then he went to work in construction, doing remodels and repairs. But the siren song of nature was never far away, and he and his wife, Evelyn, bought 50 acres in Arkansas. “I was going to be a hippie and live off the land,” he says. Eventually, they returned to Dallas, where Painter attempted the classroom a couple more times. It was never a good fit. While at Lakewood Elementary in the early 1990s, he planted a small garden to teach his students about empirical versus theoretical learning. Painter and his wife both ended up at Mockingbird Elementary, where Evelyn asked her husband to plant a row of beans on the grounds for her students to observe. It took off from there. It would grow and flourish over the next few years, teaching students about gardening, states

of matter, entropy, erosion and weather. “It was the only thing that ever made sense to me,” Painter says. “It gave me meaning.” He had hopes of working with students at Geneva Heights, but the pandemic put those plans on hold. For now, he happily maintains the garden there, and he also puts in time at Lake Highlands Community Garden, where he co-manages donations. This spring, the garden donated 70 pounds of potatoes, onions and squash to the local food bank. At his home, Painter grows a few vegetables, maintains a vermicomposting operation and keeps eight chickens. As neighbors channel their inner gardeners or chicken farmers during the pandemic, he has a few words of advice. Step one: Do your homework. Visit gardens and chicken operations you admire. Talk to the folks maintaining them. Ask them what’s involved. How much time and energy is required? Painter admits that our blackland soil, a nutrient-rich strip running from Sherman to San Antonio, is great for growing crops. But here’s the rub: You must evaluate your site. Does your yard have sun, shade and roots? Before you turn any soil, Painter encourages chats with those working at community gardens. Better yet, get your hands dirty. Volunteer your time. Then read up — even perspectives you might initially disagree with — before forming your own vision. The same advice holds true for keeping chickens. “It’s a lot of work,” he says. “Having chickens is good for kids to see where things come from.” In the garden at Geneva Heights, crows caw in the background as Painter leans on the hoe. He mentions E.O. Wilson’s biophilia movement — love of and benefit from diversity of life forms — as a great influence. “Our natural environment is deteriorating,” he says. “But we need all these organisms around us.” PATTIN VINSON is a guest writer who has lived in East Dallas for more than 20 years. n this time of highly contagious coronavirus, should schools reopen on time, after a short delay, online only or a combination of in-person and online learning? Maybe you are a two-parent household without immunocompromised members. Maybe you have high-speed internet access and more than one computer that allows you —and maybe your spouse — to work from home while your children attend Zoom school. But you may be a family more vulnerable to the virus, and surviving another semester or year without school or daycare seems unimaginable. Local public schools are being required to delay in-person learning until after Labor Day with added safety protocols and online options for families who opt out of in-person schooling. At the time of writing this, sustained spikes in infections have pushed hospitals near capacity. Fall sports and other extracurricular activities are in jeopardy. How regional colleges will handle classes is a mixed bag. The Early Childhood Learning Center at my church serves about 300 children in a typical semester. About 25 percent come from families who need us to reopen because of work responsibilities. That is not to minimize the impact on other families who also rely on us to help preschoolers learn cognitively and socially and to provide breaks from nonstop parenting. Teachers, administrators and other workers in schools are at risk in more than one way. If we have no students, we have no revenue to pay them, and the downward cycle in the economy continues because everything is related. What to do? Spiritual values are part of the discernment process and should be stated. Among them are these: 1. We care about all human life as our highest value. Before we consider other

factors, we should affirm this one. Being matters most. 2. We are our neighbor’s keeper. These issues can’t be decided solely on what we want or what we are willing to risk. They must also include what is good for others. If you knew someone was making a choice that would endanger your life or the health of your child, how would you feel? Religion operates with a bias toward the marginalized, weak and vulnerable who are disproportionately impacted by any crisis.

If you knew someone was making a choice that would endanger your life or the health of your child, how would you feel?

3. Economic and mental health matters too. If we consider only the first two, we might not open schools until the risk level is near zero after an effective vaccine has been broadly applied. But again, everything is connected, and there are costs we will all have to pay for not opening sooner rather than later. Faith doesn’t make life easier, but it points us in the direction of what is good. When there are competing goods, it tips us toward our highest values for the sake of the common good. Unfriend Why Facebook users left a neighborhood group to create their own positive outlet

M

any of us spent an inordinate amount of time on our electronic devices during COVID -19 quarantine this spring. Although we were isolated, we didn’t want to feel alone. Virtual happy hours and social media were great cures to address loneliness. At home or away, social media is always accessible and hard to escape. Much of it is used for good — staying connected, asking for recommendations, marketing a small local business — but it comes with plenty of the bad — inflammatory posts, hate-filled comments, fake news, trolling and a general lack of civility. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tik Tok have their fair share of controversy. Are they considered a publisher or a neutral platform? Like a newspaper, the former is legally responsible for the posted content and requires oversight. A platform on the other hand, like a telephone, simply enables communication. Facebook, especially, struggles to identify as one or the other. Opinions on the role of Facebook are not limited to Congress, the courtroom or traditional media. We feel it close to home, and nowhere is it closer than the Lakewood, Dallas and the recently formed LAKEWOOD / EAST DALLAS Facebook pages. Lakewood, Dallas has been the go-to source of information related to East Dallas. I never joined, primarily because friends have shared with me the nonproductive comments on the page, and I’ve chosen not to witness it directly. For most members, the page serves its purpose, and they are able to scroll past the incendiary remarks of a few to glean the information they seek — neighborhood events, school information, crime reports or the spreading of good news. Over the years, as other local Facebook pages, such as Women of Lakewood, popped up, users relayed stories of disparagement on Lakewood, Dallas. Perhaps it’s because

the description of the page is, “For discussions of all things Lakewood, like: finger-pointing and blame-storming,” along with “normal stuff too.” A group of Lakewood, Dallas members decided they needed a more positive outlet and left the page. Others say they were removed for demanding that harassment of neighbors stop. In mid-May, there was a new place to go: the LAKEWOOD / EAST DALLAS Facebook page. The core principle of the page is to be kind. Pretty much everything is acceptable with the exception of politics, drama and personal attacks. In summary, “Be benevolent or get out.” There is zero tolerance for anything otherwise. This page would act as a publisher, moderating to provide the good without the ugly. I accepted the invitation to join because it sure would be nice to stay up to date on our neighborhood without the negativity. The anonymous user who formed the page quickly passed the torch to four East Dallas residents: Erin Montgomery, Clay Sanders, Cathrine Tuck and Brian Ullrich — who administer and moderate the page around the clock. They say that while the majority of posts and comments on Lakewood, Dallas are suitable and helpful, a handful of the 15,000+ members seem to have a goal of enflaming conversations with “race-baiting, homophobia, name-calling, trolling and doxing.” The page, it seems, operates by design as a platform with little to no moderation. Ensuring that all members of LAKEWOOD / EAST DALLAS be kind is a lofty goal and not without its challenges. There were frequent political posts, especially at the start, and new members who left or were removed from Lakewood, Dallas wanted to vent and name-call on the site. The administrators soon decided that while they may have felt the same, the hypocri-

sy was apparent. Screenshots from other pages are no longer allowed, nor are posts criticizing the administrators or members of the Lakewood, Dallas page. In truth, there are still comments that fall under the “not kind” column, although the drama has lessened considerably. The administrators of LAKEWOOD / EAST DALLAS say their goal is to provide a stage for civility in discussions, and they believe moderation results in healthy discourse. As Tuck says, “It’s OK to disagree and discuss. What’s not OK is to attack and name-call.” The general rule is that members who commit an infraction are given a warning to cease. If they continue, they will be muted up to 72 hours and subsequently removed from the page if the behavior continues. As boundaries have been set and the number of users increased — at present, there are just over 3,500 — the administrators think that the page is almost self-moderating. They’ve told members that it’s not about what they’re saying, it’s about how they’re saying it. Some members who have been removed are more respectful when they rejoin. The administrators of LAKEWOOD / EAST DALLAS believe this page will continue to get better in fostering healthy conversation. And honestly, in this age of divisiveness and polarization, who wouldn’t want to feel a sense of community? Of course, there are those who think being moderated violates their right of freedom of expression. For them, the administrators say they can choose to leave without recourse, and there’s another page they can join. MITA HAVLICK is neighborhood resident and Dallas Education Foundation director.
