Top 5 Dallas Kitchen Design Trends for 2014
Professional Remodeler, HGTV, and StyleatHome have all published their national lists of top kitchen design trends. But which of these trends are surging right here in Dallas? Here’s our insider’s look at what’s hot in our area’s kitchens for 2014.
1. Upgraded Counters:
As proven in a recent study on Houzz, granite remains the most popular choice, as 50% of respondents said they prefer the material, and 36% prefer quartz. In any material, black is the color of choice, with an increasing variety of nishes now available including leather. ere are advantages, however, to upgrading your counters to other materials like Caesarstone, which is nonporous, more durable, and more resistant to heat and spills. A variety of synthetic materials are also available, some of which look natural, while o ering more durable, easy to maintain nishes. Regardless of the material you choose, maximizing horizontal space enables you to accomplish more in the kitchen, and that leads us to…
2. Elaborate Kitchen Islands:
When we listen to how you envision using your kitchen, a more elaborate kitchen island almost always factors into the solution. If you’d like your kitchen to be a social hub, an island that separates the kitchen from the living room, with storage and sitting space, is ideal. Maybe you’d like to multitask, cooking as you help your child with homework. Ultimately, kitchen islands can be customized for the way you live, with a variety of features including multi-level horizontal surfaces, built-in storage and cooking surfaces, and even bookshelves.
3. Kitchens with an Open Design:
We’ll be so bold as to predict the eternal demise of the isolated kitchen. Nearly everyone wants their kitchen to have more of a social connection with adjoining rooms. It’s not only better for entertaining and room-to-room conversation, but for keeping occupants generally feeling a sense of togetherness. In fact, 77% of Houzz survey respondents prefer the open kitchen concept while the other 23% may be trying to avoid their spouses or in-laws.
4. Refaced Kitchen Cabinets:
Designs, colors, and materials for refacing existing cabinetry have become so diverse that it makes sense in many cases to forego the cost of a complete renovation. Refacing enables you to avoid major plumbing, electrical, and counter replacement expenses. In our design showroom, we can demonstrate the gorgeous makeover you can achieve simply by refacing.
5. Lit, Floating Shelves:
A kitchen composed entirely of closed cabinetry lacks the artistry and imagination that you can incorporate with oating shelves. Light and airy, these shelves can add color, focal lighting, and a variety of textures to complement the cabinetry, which gives your kitchen a more dramatic and varied overall look. Shelves can be made of in nite materials, from stone or weathered wood beams, to stained glass. An added bene t of open, oating shelves is that you can change what you put on them to update your kitchen’s look without a remodel.
Kitchens and bathrooms remain the most popular (and valuable) home remodels in our area and across America. Next month we’ll be featuring the Top 5 Bathroom Trends for 2014 in Dallas. If you’re thinking about remodeling either of these rooms in your home, give Bella Vista Company a call and we’ll discuss the best solutions for your needs.

YOU WIN SOME YOU LOSE SOME
And it is unsettling to ponder how tenuous is the line between the two
Sometime soon, we’re going to see someone on television raising hands to the sky while jubilantly celebrating a victory, and invariably that person is going to thank a higher being for making the victory possible.
Maybe it will be at the end of the Mavericks game. Maybe it will follow a Dallas Stars victory. Maybe it will be right after another Rangers win.
But it will come. And the person doing the thanking will be thankful about the skills he or she has been given that led to the heroics that came his or her way.
It’s just another day in paradise, after all, so we probably won’t give it much thought. It won’t be the first time we’ve heard such an exclamation, nor will it be the last.
When the camera is trained on the winners, and when the winner invariably invokes the name of God to exult in a victory, let’s not forget that someone on the other side is trudging silently (or sobbing) away, wondering why his prayers went unanswered and his pleas for victory were overridden by the Big Guy in favor of someone else.
If you believe that life is pretty much a zero-sum game, that there’s a certain amount of wealth and luck and good will in the world and that how it’s allocated and who it’s allocated to is about all that changes from time to time, then you also can believe that while each of us is giving thanks for the bounties in our lives, someone else is wondering why his table
is bare and his life isn’t as full.
You can argue that hard work or a superior education or simple fate are the harbingers of blessings, and that those elements determine the level of our thanks by dividing the winners from the losers. Or you can wonder at the thin, thin line between success and failure while giving thought to the eerie cries of those less fortunate, many of whom aren’t drugged-up losers or lazy SOBs, they’re just people born on the wrong side of the proverbial tracks who haven’t yet been blessed with the necessary guidance to find the path that leads over to the “right” side.
Giving thanks is important, it’s valuable
While each of us is giving thanks for the bounties in our lives, someone else is wondering why his table is bare and his life isn’t as full.
and it’s meaningful, and the blessings that have come our way — deserved or sought after or otherwise — are worthy of our thoughts and our praise.
But at some time or another, every winner winds up on the other end of the score, watching the other team jump up and down, fingers and eyes raised to the sky, thanking a higher being for their good fortune.
And it’s at precisely that moment in time that we find out how much we really have to be thankful for, win or lose.

lead to more government control and he’ll look for new ways to fight Obamacare. It’s time to end the drain of Washington on our Texas economy.
Improving education. Education can strengthen our families, our communities, our economy, and our future. An outspoken leader for better schools, Senator Carona was named a “Hero” by Texas teachers. As our leader in Austin, he’ll work for permanent school finance reform solutions, and creating a financing structure that is fair and sustainable in the future. He’ll fight for local control and greater educational choice, oppose unfunded education mandates, work to reduce the influence of standardized tests, and hold teachers and principals more accountable.
Cutting waste & reducing spending. A strong conservative, Senator Carona has a proven record of cutting waste. As our State Senator, he will fight against the growth of government. He’ll lead for zero-based budgeting, and oppose entitlements. And he’ll work for free-market solutions to the big issues facing our state because he understands that more government is never the right answer.
Fighting federal mandates. Senator Carona believes that government should be limited and accountable. Right now, Washington has it backwards – they think the people should be accountable to government, and that’s just wrong. As our State Senator, John Carona will reject federal dollars that
Securing our borders. The key to future prosperity begins today with securing our borders – keeping us safer and mitigating the drain of illegal immigrants on our schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure. As our State Senator, John Carona will support increased funding to secure our borders, oppose sanctuary cities, and lead for expanding the use of e-verify.
Jobs & growth. Our business-friendly environment contributed to attracting jobs and growth, and allowed Texas to prosper when the rest of our nation was lagging. As a self-made business success, John Carona understands first-hand what attracts business and what deters it, and as our State Senator, he’ll work to protect the Texas of opportunity – leading for lower taxes on businesses and property owners, reducing government regulation and red tape, and always opposing a state income tax.

Q&A: Eric Steele
Writer and filmmaker Eric Steele lives in East Dallas, is on the management team that revitalized the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff, likes dogs and is a fan of Good 2 Go Taco. “That’s pretty much me in a nutshell,” Steele says. Steele cut his teeth in the independent film world by producing works such as “Topeka,” “Uncertain, TX,” “Wuss,” and “Pit Stop,” which premiered at Sundance in 2013. We sat down with him (at Good 2 Go Taco, no less) to talk about his latest endeavor, “Bob Birdnow’s Remarkable Tale of Human Survival and the Transcendence of Self,” which he released and directed last year.
How would you describe the film?
It’s an experimental film centered on one man telling a story for 85 minutes. It’s experimental in that it’s more like old-fashioned storytelling. It’s just one guy standing up telling a story. He’s giving a motivational speech at a sales conference, and in the course of it he has a cathartic experience in a moment that becomes transcendent.
How did you come up with the idea?
It came from traveling for years for business. I was working for a consulting company, so I would go to a lot of seminars and conventions. A lot of these things are very boring and a lot of platitudes; there’s not a lot that’s authentic. So I had this idea: What if someone went up there and just spilled their guts, and it was just kind of this painful, messy authentic moment and all the people there were changed because of it?
How did it evolve over time?
I wrote it in 2008, so it’s been a severalyear journey. I wrote it in one sitting on an airplane, and it all just flowed really rapidly. I wrote it as a one-man play that Barry Nash did. It started out as a reading at Kitchen Dog Theater. Then it was performed as one of the main shows for Second Thought Theater for the 2010 season. Then we went to Hollywood and did a week run of the show in the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Then a couple of friends, David Lowery and James Johnston, saw it

and said, “You need to make this into a movie,” and we started making it into a film. So it’s had a really long life. Of all of them, the film works the best.
Did you have to change it much to make it a film?
No, the only thing I had to do was, I had to write another character in there, who’s basically the boss, Dave Jerry. He’s the guy who puts Bob on stage. He kind of sets the tone, and there are a lot of cutaways to Jerry. [Jerry and Birdnow] have a very specific kind of relationship. I had to add that to give some conflict to the film that kind of lacked from the theater piece. In the theater piece, the conflict is inherent because the audience is the conflict; you’re faced with this guy telling the story. In the movie, there’s that separation, so we had to kind of put the conflict in there. I think it works really well.
In the film, we still are able to create the feeling that the film audience is the audience, progressively. We did have a pool of extras, but they sort of disappear as the film progresses, and you sort of become the audience. It’s very intimate.
Bob Birdnow tells a personal survival story in the film; what was the influence behind that?
I’ve heard several survival stories that I think probably subconsciously influenced some of the horrific circumstances that he was faced with, but it wasn’t pulled frompersonalexperiences.I’venever had any near-death experiences or any immediate need to survive in the wilderness. Thank goodness. It was more that I related to the theme of the whole thing, which is: Who is your greatest self?
Bob Birdnow is an authentic person in a world where being authentic and honest isn’t always what’s important, especially in a corporate business market. That’s the sadness of it all. You go to these corporate meetings, and they’re so useless. What if actually that hour period was turned into something that left everyone in the room shaken or moved or inspired? What if people actually meant what they said, instead of being political or diplomatic or polite? We’d live in such a different world; I think a much better world.

She won’t stop
Joyce Kelly has no feeling in her lower legs or feet. It’s one of the effects of having CMT(Charcot-Marie-Tooth), a degenerative neurological disorder that breaks down nerves in the extremities. Walking on grass or other uneven surfaces can be tricky for her. But that hasn’t stopped the Casa Lindaarea resident from being a triathlete.
Kelly had been running since college. After she was diagnosed with CMT in 2010, she didn’t quit. Instead, she got a coach, Morgan Johnson with Playtri, the triathlon trainingfacilityandstoreatMockingbird and Abrams. Wanting to learn more about CMT to improve Kelly’s training, Johnson contacted Dr. Robert Chetlin, a leading CMT researcher and exercise physiologist. With his help, Johnson devised a training strategy.
“We startedworkingonmusclesthat weren’t affected yet,” Kelly says.
Soon her balance improved, and her competitive times were better. “If not for Morgan, I wouldn’t be competing, and I would probably be in leg braces,” she says.
Not content to simply manage her disease,Kellywantedtodomoretoraise awareness — and funds. “I’m big on paying it forward,” she says. That’s where her career came in handy.
A Realtor for Nathan Grace Real Estate in Lake Highlands, Kelly is active in the MetroTex Association of Realtors and is on its Realtors in Action committee. She put to work her energy and enthusiasm, both of which she has in abundance, and convinced MetroTex to host a race that benefits CMT research.
It wasn’t an easy sell. “I was told, ‘We’ve never done anything that big,’ “ she says.
“I think my enthusiasm and the fact that I
have this disease [swayed the committee] ... It was like, ‘Can you pull this off, Missy?’ and I’m like, ‘Watch me, Baby!’ “
The DFW Get Fit! Race, which is scheduled for May 3 in Irving, will be sponsored by“realestate-centric”businesses.“Our goal is for it to become known as the ‘Realtor Race,’ “ she says. Kelly wants the event to promote the real estate industry as well as raise awareness about CMT. “CMT is just now starting to come into its own with awareness,” she says.
“Since this is our inaugural race, we’re expecting about 1,000 people,” Kelly says. There will be a chip-timed 5K, a chip-timed 10K and a family fun run. There will also be fitness-themed activities for both children and adults. Playtri is race-directing, and everyone who signs up for the 5K will receive a six-week “Get Fit” plan from Playtri.

The race benefits the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation. Kelly says the bulk of the proceeds will go straight to research, with which Dr. Chetlin is involved. “The cure for [CMT] is going to be so cutting-edge, and we’re within a couple of years,” she says. “It’s going to help people with Lou Gehrig’s, it’s going to help people with Multiple Sclerosis; there are scientists all over the world waiting for this.”
And of course Kelly is more than willing to help once the FDA gives them the go-ahead. “I’m one of the lab rats,” she says.
Kelly hasn’t been able to train as much as she’d like to this winter because of seasonal viruses, to which people with CMT are susceptible. But she hasn’t let that get her down. “I think attitude is a decision,” she says. “Just decide you’re going to be happy, and be happy.”

The White Rock Dog Park closes this month for much-needed renovations
By the time the dog days of summer roll around, the dog park at White Rock Lake will be temporarily closed for some much-needed construction.
The city council recently approved the $946,000 contract to begin construction, using funding from the 2006 bond program. The park will close in March, and it won’t open again until December, according to project manager Richard Stauffer.
Stauffer says the city reviewed phasing the work between the large dog and small dog park areas; however the ma-
jority of the work items — such as grading, concrete work, irrigation, fencing, etc. — are best performed at the same time, rather than phasing them between two separate areas.
“As with all projects, public safety is the highest priority,” Stauffer says. “Allowing areas within the dog park to remain open in close proximity to construction activity poses a hazard.”
The construction will reduce the mud and mess with artificial turf, sidewalks and a “dog launch,” which features an observation area and stairs that slope
down toward the water.
The constriction will include grading and drainage, including a new irrigation system, and it will even clean up the erosion problems near the park.
It will expand the park, increasing the large dog park from one-and-a-half acres to two acres, and the small dog park from half-an-acre to one acre.
Construction will also include drinking fountains, pet waste stations with trash cans, ornamental fences, new trees and lighting in the parks and parking lot.

Bygone theaters of East Dallas
Arcadia Publishing released a new book last month titled, “Historic Dallas Theatres,” by local historian D. Troy Sherrod. It examines Dallas as the showbiz capital of Texas during the 20th century.
There was a time when the city had more than 100 theaters. In fact, Elm Street boasted almost as many vaudeville theaters and movie houses as Broadway. The book takes us through different neighborhoods, including Downtown, East Dallas and Oak Cliff, and it devotes entire chapters to the burlesque scene and segregation.
Our neighborhood makes plenty of appearances with iconic structures such as the Lakewood Theatre, listed as “the best remaining example of an Art Deco theater in Dallas.” But the East Dallas chapter is full of other historic theaters that we don’t see today.
There’s the Arcadia Theatre, which opened in 1927 as the city’s first theater with sound. In the 1980s, it became a nightclub until it burned down in 2006. Now, the site is home to Trader Joe’s.
At the corner of Mockingbird and Skillman was the Wilshire Theatre, which operated from 1946-1978. At Peak and Live Oak, now the site of a residential community, The Peak Theatre ran shows until it, too, burned down in 1956; the owner was charged with arson.
The book also covers the Granada Theater, the Captain Theatre on North Henderson, the Grand Theatre on East Grand, the Buckner Drive-In in far East Dallas and, of course, Casa Linda.
The author is a fourth-generation resident of Dallas with roots in local showbiz. His research and photos came from his own collections as well as Dallas Morning News archives, the Dallas Public Library and SMU libraries.

Did you know you should never store textiles next to wood or paper? Over time, the acid from the wood or paper will leak out and burn the textile fibers.
Did you know you shouldn’t use silver dip cleaner because it strips off a layer of silver?
Unless you’ve spent as many years as East Dallas appraiserSusanSturdivanthas, researchingantiquesandmining through art history books, there’s no reason why you would.
“I read until my eyes bled and studied until my head fell off to learn everything I could about antiques,” Sturdivant says.
That’s a lot of studying, but there’s no reason why you need to do that — because Sturdivant and a dozen other appraisers already have, and the Dallas Woman’s Forum is gathering them all together to help East Dallas neighbors out.
On March 8-9, neighbors can attend Antiques at the Alexander to learn helpful hints, hear entertaining and informational talks about antiques and appraising, and bring their own antiques in for a value guesstimation.
Appraising antiques can be quite a task, but Sturdivant gets a kick out of it.
“Even as a full-time therapist, I always said that if I won the lottery I would go back to school and study art history,” she says.

“WhenIdiscoveredappraising, that was kind of a way I could do that and make a living doing it.”
She taught herself on the job (hence the “studied until my eyes bled” comment), and she soaked up as much information as she could from other appraisers.
“Every appraisal is different. I’ve appraisedeverythingfromfineartand Asian antiques to Klan robes,” she says.
During the event, Sturdivant plans to speak about an appraisal she once did on a piece of French porcelain.
“There were no marks on it, but there was a family crest,” she explains. “I don’t know why, but I decided I wanted to know about that crest. I spent months learning about the crest, and I can now tell you all about the Carroll family of Maryland.”
If you want to hear the extended version, you’ll have to go to the event, but tosummarize:Afterlotsofreading, Googling and making a few phone calls, Sturdivant managed to figure out the individual who originally bought the porcelain and brought it to the United States.
”It’s like solving little mysteries.”
And that’s what’s so fun about it, she says. Knowing the back-story of an antique can help raise the value, especially if it belonged to someone famous.
But not all appraisals are so complicated. With most pieces, appraisers will simply give a value based on how much it would cost to replace it with a similar piece.
At the Antiques at the Alexander event, the appraisers hope to help neighbors determine whether their items are “trash or treasure” and whether they are worth a more extensive appraisal.
“Often times, what people think is really valuable is usually not,” Sturdivant says. “People think that because something is old, it’s valuable, and that’s not necessarily true.”
Proceeds will benefit the restoration ofthehistoricAlexanderMansionat 4607 Ross, where the event will be held. TheAlexanderMansionwasbuiltin 1904 and is where the Dallas Woman’s Forum convenes.

What’s kickin’?
Craic, the Irish vernacular for “fun,” is what Gaelic football is all about. At least that’s what the East Dallas version of it is all about — community, camaraderie and some good, old-fashioned fun.
Gaelic football — by all appearances a soccer-rugby hybrid — originated in Ireland, and immigrants brought it to the United States. In 2010, Dallas started its own team (at the request of the Austin team, so it would have another Texas team with which to butt heads), which happens to be

based right here in East Dallas.
Four years ago, East Dallas resident Kevin McCann gathered a group of buddies, and shortly after that neighbor Emmett Long rounded up several more. Together, they created the first Dallas team under the North American Gaelic Athletic Association.
They call themselves the Fionn Mac Cumhaills (pronounced “Fin Me-kool”), after a benevolent giant from Irish mythology; they started an all-female team a couple of years ago. Now there are more than 55 men and 35 women who play. The teams aren’t made up of solely Irish men and women. Several nationalities are represented, and the team is “anxious to expand their recruitment,” spokeswoman Catherine Pate says.
Gaelic football is an intense, high-action sport that “combines the agility of soccer, the pace and high scoring of basketball and the fielding skills of American football,” member Kandace Walters says.
At a glance, it might look like soccer, until you realize the players are running with the ball in their hands. Pate says that was the biggest hang-up she had to overcome when she started playing because it felt like “traveling.”
In Gaelic football, the players run with the ball for four steps, and then either bounce the ball on the ground, kick the ball back to themselves, or pass it to someone else. Then four more steps and repeat, except they can’t bounce it on the ground twice in a row; that would be too easy.
The East Dallas group hosts a weekly “boot camp” followed by a training session, as well as pub leagues in the summer.
There are four Texas teams — Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio — that play each other frequently, and they travel to other states to face off with other cities. They also compete at nationals, which will be held in Boston this year. Last year, there were 86 teams at nationals.
The group also plays hurling and camogie. And when the team is not on the practice fields, you can usually find its members in one of the various Irish pubs around East Dallas, celebrating their Irish, or not-so-Irish, heritage.

Clocking out
These days, if you want to find neighbor Charlie Dalton, don’t head to Ralph Austin Jewelers, where he’s been repairing watches and jewelry for more than 32 years. Instead, Dalton is spending more time at his favorite neighborhood haunts — shooting the breeze with friends and neighbors at Gold Rush Café or knocking a golf ball around at some of the area golf courses. The 66-year-old decided to retire from the jewelry-repair business and handed the keys to Ralph Austin Jewelers over to a jeweler from Duncanville, Robert Milke, and his son, Tanner Milke. Dalton’s father-in-law founded Ralph Austin Jewelers in the SkillmanLive Oak shopping center in 1966 and ran it until Dalton took over in 1982. Before he moved to East Dallas, Dalton received his degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas in Austin in 1969, and then he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico for 13 years. He began occasionally helping his father-in-law at Ralph Austin Jewelers and enjoyed the work. “Watch repair is pretty complicated,” Dalton says. “There’s a lot to learn about that, but jewelry repair can be, too, especially the finer stuff.” When he took over, he only had basic knowledge of jewelry and watch repair, so he had to learn the rest of it on the fly, but after three decades of perfecting the trade, he’s now one of the few jewelers who knows how to repair old, mechanical watches — you know, the ones that don’t run on batteries. But he’s still learning, he insists. “If you think you’ve learned it all, then you’re in trouble,” he says with a laugh. Although it has been fulfilling work, Dalton, who hasn’t taken more than three or four consecutive days off in 32 years, has some new things on his agenda. “I’d like to travel,” he says. He’s planning to hang around to pitch in part-time until June or so, but after that, it’s off to Europe. —Brittany

Someof the changes at the restaurant near the Peavy-Garland Road intersection haven’t been so great. For example, it seems as if every time we blink the place has a new name. Weylan McAmally, a pharmacist from Red Oak, who opened the location in December 2012, originally founded it as White Rock Abbey. When James Orr bought the restaurant in August of 2013, he changed the name to The Local Pour White Rock. Then, he learned a bar in Houston had copyrighted the name “Local Pour,” so after a chat with an intellectual property lawyer, Orr decided to change the name of the restaurant again, this time to The Royal Pour White Rock, and (cross our fingers) let’s hope it sticks. But despite the confusion, some of the changes have been good. Excellent, actually. Take, for instance, the pork chop nuggets created by chef Brent Ercanbrack and served with his grandmother’s “secret recipe” cream gravy — really good. After taking over the location, Orr and Ercanbrack completely reworked the menu. Ercanbrack, who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Dallas, is turning out creations such as the PB&J Burger, made with red curry peanut butter and bacon-cranberry marmalade, and the Angry Bird Burrito, made with spicy marinated chicken breast, seasoned lettuce, avocado, bacon, jalapeno, cheese and sriracha sour cream, all wrapped in a grilled flour tortilla. Cutesy names aside, these plates are still just quality, old-fashioned bar food meant to be consumed by the “everyman” crowd, as Orr puts it. “We’re a bar,” he says. “We think of ourselves more as a bar than a restaurant. This is bar food.” But that doesn’t mean it can’t be good, right? “The whole world is turning into foodies,” Orr explains. “People used to want to eat what they knew. Now people come in and want to try new foods. They want to know what’s unique to your restaurant.”

Leslie Porterfield: Danny Fulgencio
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS
Although motorcycle racer Leslie Porterfield’s life doesn’t directly mirror any specific cinematic storyline, the ballsy blonde bombshell easily could fit in with the cast of characters from the “Fast and Furious” movies. Actually, come to think of it, we’re not sure why no one has made a movie about her life. For starters, Porterfield learned to ride a motorcycle at age 16 because everyone told her she couldn’t — which could make for an ideal hazy-edged flashback scene. Fast-forward to the ripe ol’ age of 19, when she started racing. She was determined to go to the Bonneville Salt Flats, an area of densely packed salt pan in Utah — a place she calls “paradise for gearheads” — to break the record for the Fastest Woman in the World on a Motorcycle. In 2007 she made it to Bonneville, but crashed at 110 mph and broke seven ribs. Someone else might’ve called it quits, but in a dramatic twist, Porterfield defied all odds and went back to Bonneville in 2008, where she became the first female member in the Bonneville 200 MPH Club. Then, by going 232 mph at Bonneville, she set the record for Fastest Woman in the World on a Motorcycle. (Racers must maintain a speed for one mile both ways, and the speeds are averaged. Her highest speed was 246 mph.) Today, she owns High Five Cycles in Dallas and is the proud mother of 19-month-old twins. “I always get asked if I plan to go back and go faster, but having twins has definitely changed that,” she says. So for now, she’s sticking to mentoring other young female riders. “Who knows — I may just end up helping out the next person who will break my record,” she says. “But that’s all right. Records are just on loan; they’re made to be broken,” she says, as the credits roll. —Brittany Nunn

Orville Rogers: David Leeson
Last year’s book “Unbroken” mesmerized readers, spent 125 weeks in the New York Times best-seller list and was named nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Laura Hillenbrand penned the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner and heroic airman who fought in World War II and was shot down over the Pacific, where he survived several grueling months before being captured by Japanese soldiers. Then he endured several more years in brutal prisoner-of-war camps. Lakewood’s Orville Rogers’ luck was a little better. When the Hiroshima bomb dropped and Zamperini was still sitting in a Japanese prison camp, Rogers was training to fly a B-17; Rogers never faced life-threatening combat. Unlike Zamperini — whose flying experience led to man-eating sharks and unimaginable loss of basic freedoms, among other horrors — Rogers loves planes and relished his time learning to pilot them. He even has a model of a B-36 at home, which he showed the Advocate in 2010. “It could fly higher than any fighter,” he said then. Like his contemporary, Rogers’ running prowess has enhanced his legendary status. Last year Rogers broke the world record for seven indoor and outdoor track events in distances from 60 to 3,000 meters. Last March at the National Indoor Championships in Landover, Maryland, 11 world records were broken among some 1,200 competitors, and Rogers broke six of those. “I think I have some of that built-in stubbornness, perseverance, whatever you want to call it,” Rogers told Runner’s World magazine last year. “I’m going to finish the job I started.” Zamperini, who, like Rogers, is now 96, is living the good life these days, too. He most recently was spotted on the pages of Entertainment Weekly, arms locked with Angelina Jolie, who is directing the movie version of “Unbroken.”

The battle for supremacy once was waged at Artus Pass. Never heard of Artus Pass? Ah, yes, you probably know the place by its common name, Norbuck Park. Many a Sunday afternoon, men, women and children have gathered there to eat, drink, socialize and clobber one another with well-padded swords. The participants belonged to Amtgard, a non-profit organization dedicated to recreational medieval and ancient-culture role-play. As in the HBO saga “Game of Thrones,” Amtgard players don 15th-century garb, and most speak with what sounds to the layperson like barbaric Scottish brogue. However, this cast gets along with far less actual dismemberment, gore and other R-rated content. Years ago, neighborhood resident Jorge Rodas was waiting tables at Chili’s in Casa Linda when a co-worker introduced him to Amtgard. It was magical, he says. “Another waiter took me to Garland’s Midnight Sun Park, and I was immediately hooked,” says Rodas, known at the park as “Duke Lord Squire Protector Sutra Bahuas.” Eventually, with the help of others, Rodas started the Artus Pass “shire,” a subgroup of the citywide Kingdom of the Emerald Hills (which most of us call Dallas), but it was short-lived. Now Rodas is a working actor, and the remaining Artus Pass players have re-integrated with the Midnight Sun crew. For current-day live-action role play in the White Rock area, check out the Barony of the Steppes branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism, (steppes.ansteorra. org), which meets regularly at Tietze Park on Skillman at Vanderbilt.

The late Rita Greenfield who worked in the office at a nearby high school fell victim to a marijuana muffin prank: Can Türkyilmaz
FEATURING IAN WALKER AND JOSEPH TELLINI CO-STARRING “MISS RITA” IN BREAKING BAD
While East Dallas’ answer to Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are hardly Heisenberg level, there will live on in neighborhood lore a TV-worthy tale of a duo whose dabblings in the drug world left them in deep trouble. All hell broke loose on May 16, 2006, when White Rock-area residents and Bishop Lynch seniors Ian Walker and Joseph Tellini, in an ill-advised prank, delivered marijuana-laced muffins to the teacher’s lounge of rival Lake Highlands High School. By all accounts the pastries were lovely and delicious, but within minutes of consuming them, staffers were feeling woozy. By day’s end, soon after LHHS administrator Karen Clardy caught on that the muffins were at fault, the high school’s conference room was wall-to-wall with representatives from the Dallas Police, the North Texas Regional Drug Enforcement Task Force, Dallas Fire-Rescue, the Food and Drug Administration, Dallas County Health and Human Services and even the FBI, which showed up because of fears that someone had tampered with commercially prepared food. Over the next several days, the prank became a national story and the butt of many a late-night-television joke. Everyone from the victims — including a beloved 80-something office worker, Rita Greenfield — to the LHHS principal, to the city at large was laughing. Everyone, that is, except the pranksters, who were facing serious criminal charges, and their parents. Eventually the young men received probation, and both went on to graduate with honors from the University of Texas. Ian’s mom, Caroline Walker, published an Amazon e-book in 2006 titled “Epiphany in Ordinary Time” about the family’s struggle with the consequences of the, ahem, Baking Bad incident. —Christina

There is something about a horse with a personality that thrills an audience to no end. The racehorse Seabiscuit, for example, so inspired the nation in the 1930s that his life was the subject of a book and at least two movies. In the 1970s a similarly captivating Seattle Slew took the world by storm and won the Triple Crown. And while Slew has no direct Lakewood connection, one of the thoroughbred’s (more than 200) sires is living a life of relative anonymity right here in the neighborhood. White Rock Stables resident Slew Devil is a descendent of the champion and biological sibling of more than 100 stakes winners. Slew Devil raced as a young-un before moving to a show barn in Florida where, following a jumping accident that ended his professional dressage career, Karly Kilroy bought him. Like his silver screen counterparts, Slew Devil has a charismatic personality. When our photographer showed up for a shoot, Slew was a total ham — obediently and repeatedly running, posing and pausing for a treat. “He loves people and wants to be near people all the time,” Kilroy says. “He follows me around, neighs at me when I walk into the barn, puts his face close to mine. He is very patient with children, very calm.” He also loves watermelon.

Rogelio Martinez: Danny Fulgencio
Plot: Troubled teen finds hope and healing through dance. Sound familiar? Like every dance movie known to mankind?
“Footloose,” “Dirty Dancing,” “Step Up,” “Take the Lead,” “Save the Last Dance,” “Honey” … we told you, there are a lot. Somewhere in there is the real-life tale of Woodrow Wilson High School graduate Rogelio Martinez, who came to East Dallas while hopping around from one abusive situation to the next. When Martinez discovered Lisa Moya King’s dance class during his sophomore year, something changed,
even though the situation with his home life stayed the same. “I started staying after school to practice, and I liked it a lot because I wasn’t at home. I was away from home. I was here doing something that caught my attention. I would forget about everything,” he says. Dance anchored him; finally, he had found something that he not only enjoyed but also excelled in. Dance opened up a new world of possibilities, and he threw himself headlong into it. “I danced everything, and I was a really fast learner. I put all my mind into it,” he says. “People always see me as a quiet person, and when I would dance, I would be different. I just love performing, just the way it feels. It’s like freedom.” —Brittany Nunn

Drumming it in
In 2012, Woodrow band director Chris Evetts inherited 20 kids who could barely play. He’s already doubled the number of players, but can he turn them into college-scholarship material?
Story by Brittany Nunn | Photos by Kim Leeson
In 2011, the first time Chris Evetts heard Woodrow Wilson High School’s marching band play at a football game, the band had reached an all-time low. There were only seven kids in the group — barely enough to make
a garage band, much less a marching band.
“It was embarrassing. Even if you have seven phenomenal musicians, you can’t be a high school band,” Evetts says. “I remember thinking they looked like they were just

wandering around and honking noises.”
But Evetts, who at the time was assistant band director at Highland Park High School, was inspired by the ragtag ensemble.
“I just thought, ‘They need something. They need someone,’ “ he says.
He turned to his co-workers and said, “I’m going to work there next year. That’s going to be my next job.” And, of course, they laughed at him. It became something of a running joke between Evetts and his co-workers, he says. But the joke was on them, because he was serious.
Sure enough, in June 2012, the band director position opened at Woodrow, and Evetts jumped at the opportunity to snap it up.
“It’s a fascinating challenge to go to a program and build it from the ground up,” Evetts says.
The big di erence between Evetts’ approach and that of previous directors is that he intends to stay for the long haul, he says. That was how things got so bad in the first place.
About 15 years ago, Woodrow had a great band, but then longtime band director Richard Hayden left. After that, Woodrow had a “revolving door” of directors, Evetts says. Each would stay a year or two and then move on.
“Even if they were good directors, they stayed such a brief time,” he says. “And when you keep restarting and keep restarting, you lose loyalty. The band just went down the tubes because it had a series of band directors that didn’t stay.”
By the time Evetts’ predecessor Chris Walls took over, there were only a handful of students in the band. Walls did what he could, eventually recruiting players from the high school.
“What people don’t understand is, you can’t do that,” Evetts says. “You can’t just hand a kid a horn and they can suddenly play. They have to go through the process of starting in sixth grade, being taught over a course of years the proper techniques.”
And that’s what Evetts inherited when he landed the job in 2012: Twenty kids, most of whom had been playing for about six months.
For a year and a half, Evetts has been working with students on basics like posture and muscle-building, and his e orts already have paid o .

“See the red plaque hanging on the wall?” Evetts says, gesturing behind him to a plaque hanging outside his o ce door. “We didn’t get the big trophy, but that plaque is the best thing we could’ve possibly brought back. That’s a symbol of how far they went.”
Not only did the band increase its scores, but Evetts also grew the band to 51 players.
“This year we want the big trophy,” he says.
Evetts credits the students, saying the progress is a “testament to the kids accepting a new person,” but the students turn the praise right back around.
Band member Julia Aves, who started playing clarinet in the sixth grade, came to Woodrow from J. L. Long Middle School during Evetts’ first year.
Fireman-Owned Family-Operated
“When he came here, he told us this was his dream job, and he made that clear,” Aves says. “He’s very passionate about it, and you can tell.”
His outlook has made an impact on her and the other students. Aves looks at her bandmates as extended family members, she says.
“Some of these kids don’t have a good home life,” Aves says. “They don’t have people who love them, so they can come here and have people to talk to and have friends. This is like their second home.”
Those kids are exactly the ones Evetts hopes to reach — kids who need band to
58 lakewood.advocatemag.com MARCH 2014
help them make it through high school as well as to get into college.
“Band is a gateway to college. I went to college on a band award. I went to TCU. I never could’ve a orded that school,” Evetts explains. “That’s what these kids can do, too.”
But most of Evetts’ students still have some polishing up to do before they’ll be college scholarship material, and in order to get there, they need private lessons.
“The kids have to have one-on-one instruction,” Evetts says. “When you have a whole room full of students, it’s like teaching five di erent languages.”
There are professional musicians who visit Dallas high schools to give students one-on-one instruction, but it’s freelance, so the kids pay the teachers directly.
“These kids can’t a ord that,” Evetts says. “So they’re out of luck to begin with. I need a scholarship program that pays for these kids to have lessons.”
“That’s where I come in,” says neighbor Henda Salmeron, a broker associate with Dave Perry-Miller and Associates whose ninth-grade son is a tuba player in the Woodrow band.
Salmeron recently joined the booster club for the Woodrow band and, after hearing Evetts’ story and about the current needs, delved headlong into fundraising e orts to help all the players a ord private lessons.
For starters, she managed to turn the booster club into a 501(c)(3) organization in just a few short weeks, and she built a website for the Woodrow band. (After all, if you don’t have a website, you practically don’t exist.)

With the combination of the kids who can and cannot pay, it will cost about $2,200 a month between now and the end of the year for all students to receive private lessons, Salmeron figures.
“We need to raise money,” she says.
To kicko the fundraising, Salmeron is hosting a blues and rock concert featuring Gary Porterfield and, of course, the Woodrow Wilson band in March. She has already secured the venue — the Granada Theater — and made fliers.
Also in March, she’s hosting a poker tournament at Times Ten Cellars. Details for that are available on the new Woodrow Wilson Wildcats Band website.
“So many good things are happening,” Evetts says. “The private lessons, we’ve already got those going. I’ve got teachers in here every day. We’re taking the band to San Antonio over spring break to perform at the Alamo. And what other high school band is playing at the Granada Theater? Nobody. This is super cool.”

Aside from lessons, Evetts says Woodrow also needs new instruments because “a lot of what we’re playing on is junk,” he says.
“How can I lure kids from other schools, convince them to come here instead of going to Booker T. or Townview, which is where we lose all of our good musicians to, if I don’t have instruments for them to play on?”
“You need momentum,” Salmeron says. Well, and money.

The lowdown on what’s up with neighborhood businesses
Send business news tips to livelocal@advocatemag.com
Fast facelift
The Starbucks at Gaston and La Vista reopened in early February after a snappy 10-day remodel. To say the place received a “major overhaul” wouldn’t even begin to cover the extensive nip-tick this Starbucks recently underwent. “Unrecognizable” is more like it, and the reaction has been mixed, according to one of the baristas. Some people love it, but some others are sad to see the space so drastically reworked.
Moving up
The Shops at Park Lane has broken ground for three new buildings that will add more than 160,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space to the 33.5-acre multi-use shopping center. Located at the northern end of the project near Park and North Central Expressway, the expansion will add a five-story, 150,000 square-foot building containing 120,000 square feet of office space with 30,000 square feet of ground floor retail.
Ripped up
Chunk by chunk, the old building at Arboretum Village continues to disappear as it is disassembled by demolition crews. The shopping center at the corner of Gaston-Garland-Grand belongs to Lincoln Property Company, and once the old building is cleared out, Lincoln plans to build a brand new shopping center in its place. So far we know of at least three future tenants for the shopping center.
First The Fresh Market signed on, and then Ace Hardware agreed to transplant from its current location in Lakewood Shopping Center to Arboretum Village. Most recently, Luke’s Locker became the third tenant to sign on the dotted line.
On the upswing
Last July, long-time owner Tommy Stanco handed the keys of the Balcony Club over to new owners, Teddy Davey and Bruce Richardson. Some major tweaks have been made to the venue, most noticeably being the stage, which was moved from the space near the door to the dead center of the room. Also, the curved wall along the stairs leading to the bathroom has been removed, giving the room a more open feel. It has also been cleaned up with a fresh coat of paint, new furniture and other much-needed fixes.
Work it out
The owners of HG Sply Co. on Lower Greenville opened The Gym of Social Mechanics in February in the spot to the immediate left of HG Sply Co., Lower Greenville’s wholesomeeating, paleo-diet centric restaurant. Managing partner Elias Pope says Social Mechanics centers around “functional fitness mixed with the theory of the group moving the individual forward,” Pope says.” It’s about getting together as a team and being better than you can be on your own.”

THE PHILOSOPHY OF ENOUGH
How finding satisfaction is the secret to happiness
They call him The King. Arnold Palmer once was and always will be the king of golf. He took a sport that had been largely shut up behind stone gates and made it appeal to the common person. He came by this honestly.
Arnie’s father, Deacon (a preacher’s got to like that name, don’t you know?), was the greens superintendent at the Latrobe Country Club in western Pennsylvania. He was Arnie’s first teacher. He taught him how to get the right grip on the club to play the game. He taught him how to get the right grip on ambition to play the game of life.
Deacon once was offered the position of greens superintendent at the neighboring, famed and exclusive Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh. When he told young Arnold of the opportunity, his son was proud and began to dream of being there. Deke turned down the job. He told his boy this: “Arn, I’m staying at Latrobe. We’re going to make it happen here. I can’t drink any more, I can’t eat any more, and I can’t love my business any more, so I’m staying right where we’re at.”
Arnold Palmer has lived long enough now (he’s 84) to judge that to have been his greatest life lesson. The Latrobe club hasn’t changed much over the years, but to Arnold it’s still got everything he needs. It’s home and I love it, he says.
The recent Super Bowl commercials reinforced what has become conventional wisdom among us: having “more, better or different” is the secret to happiness. We will be satisfied when we get the next job, house, car, spouse, child or thing. But the truth is, getting the next thing doesn’t cure the insatiable desire that undergirds every change.
We become what we practice. If we practice want, we will want forever. If we prac-
tice satisfaction, we will be satisfied.
We would all profit from adopting the “philosophy of enough” exemplified by Deacon Palmer. When you cultivate a sense of fullness rather than emptiness, you can experience satisfaction in life and practice gratitude.
St. Paul testified to this very thing: “I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all
things through him who strengthens me.”
That last line about being able to do all things through “him” who strengthens us has been taken in all sorts of well-meaning but ill-advised directions. Football players wear it as an eye-black amulet to draw strength from on the field. Spiritual motivation speakers beseech aspirants to prosper by letting God give them the promised edge. The context teaches us just the opposite: God strengthens us spiritually beyond our natural capacity so that we may accept the circumstances of want or plenty and learn contentment.
This may be bad for the economy, but it’s good for the soul of society. Jesus promised abundant life. He didn’t promise abundance of things. Like Deke Palmer, we can know the good life if we learn the adequacy of all that is already ours.
Enough already, then.

Swiss neighbor Harryette Ehrhardt, a retired state legislator, was honored twice in February. The League of Women Voters honored Ehrhardt as the Susan B. Anthony Award winner for this year because of her determined efforts in obtaining equal rights for all citizens. The ceremony was held at the Lakewood Country Club on Feb. 13. Ehrhardt was also honored by IGNITE, a group that encourages young high school and college women to become involved in local politics and seek elected leadership positions, during its 2014 Young Women’s Political Leadership Conference on Feb. 22. Because of Ehrhardt’s experience and commitment to the IGNITE mission, she is a role model for young women, IGNITE says. IGNITE awarded her the Trailblazer of the Year Award.
Ultra-running is a fringe activity that is gaining popularity, and women from the Dallas and White Rock area are proving to be leaders in the sport. An ultra-marathon refers to anything longer than the 26.2 miles that is a regular marathon — 50k, 50 miles, 100 miles and beyond — and they are typically run on dirt trails (and frequently over mountains and other grueling terrain). We wrote a year ago about White Rock-area resident and White Rock Running Co-op member Nicole Studer when she won the Huntsville Rocky Raccoon 100-mile race. This year’s Rocky Raccoon 100 served as the USA Track and Field 100-mile Trail Championship, and Studer defended her title against an even tougher field of women. She won again; she ran under 16 hours and beat second-place Kaci Lickteig from Nebraska by just three minutes. Another neighborhood woman, Shaheen Sattar — who also improved last year’s time by more than an hour — placed third. Claudia Zulejkic, who you’ll find most days working at Bikram Yoga Dallas on Mockingbird-Abrams, ran all day and night, completing the 100-mile ultramarathon in a little more than 25 hours and placed in the top 25 women out of more than 100 who started the race.

TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE
East Dallas has flourished from historic preservation. So why does the city want to change conservation districts?
COMMENT. Visit lakewood.advocatemag.com and search Angela Hunt to tell us what you think..
Drive a block in any direction in East Dallas, and you’re likely to find yourself in a historic neighborhood. Whether it’s the intricate Tudor cottages of the M Streets and Hollywood/Santa Monica, the stately mansions along Swiss Avenue, or the sprawling, neighborly porches of the prairie-style homes of Munger Place, East Dallas boasts more conservation districts, historic districts and neighborhood stabilization overlays than just about any other part of the city.
Our expansive collection of historic homes did not occur by accident or as the result of the farsighted wisdom of City Hall planners. It is directly attributable to the hard work of residents determined to preserve the character and charm of homes threatened by demolition, neglect, improper zoning and incompatible infill.
takes months, and sometimes years, to complete. At that point, the city sends zoning ballots to property owners to gauge neighborhood support (a part of the process common to all types of zoning changes). The proposal is presented to the City Plan Commission and, if approved, forwarded to the City Council for ultimate determination. It’s a challenging process, but one that has worked well in allowing determined, united neighborhoods to obtain preservation protection while weeding out those unable to establish consensus.
The City of Dallas oversees the rezoning process, but it would be an overstatement to say the city is a proponent of historic preservation. At best, it is agnostic. The city’s historic-preservation department is understaffed, which doesn’t help matters, but there is also a sense that the city is averse to the creation of new preservation districts.
nificantly increase the percentage of property owners required to initiate the process (from a simple majority to a supermajority). Another would introduce a new standard prohibiting the City Council from voting on any proposed conservation district unless a supermajority of property owners returned their ballots in favor. This would have the effect of counting abstentions as “no” votes in the balloting process, a Draconian counting method used in no other rezoning procedure in the city (and certainly not one employed during City Council elections).
Obtaining preservation status is a long, arduous process initiated and led by neighborhood volunteers. It requires countless meetings, architectural and historical analysis of each home, codification of the protections sought, and neighborhood consensus on the proposed plan. The process can
Now, unprompted by neighborhoods or preservationists, city staff propose to change the way conservation districts are created. As the old adage goes: “If it ain’t broke, please, please, City Hall, don’t fix it.” Ostensibly, the intent is to clarify the process for neighborhoods. But the conservation district process has served neighborhoods well for more than 30 years, so I’m skeptical of the real impetus for these changes.
Some of the suggested revisions would make it much more difficult to obtain conservation district status. One proposed change would sig-
These suggested changes aren’t set in stone, and it’s unclear what ultimately will be presented to the City Council. But city staff’s proposals are concerning and telling. Commercial developers (and their paid consultants and teams of attorneys) who seek rezoning aren’t required to meet these restrictive standards. So why should neighborhood volunteers seeking conservation district protection be faced with additional obstacles when the process is already challenging?
As the proposed changes are discussed in the coming months, it will be important for those of us who have most benefitted from historic preservation — through increased home values, greater neighborhood stability, a sense of community, and freedom from incompatible infill — to make our voices heard. East Dallas would not be East Dallas without our historic homes, and we need to ensure that future neighborhoods have the same opportunities to preserve their unique character.
