The

A lot of people seem to enjoy spilling their guts on the internet. I am not one of those people. I am more of an online lurker. I like watching other people make fools of themselves or share advice, but I rarely feel compelled to add my two cents. Generally, if I wait long enough, someone smarter or gutsier will say what I would have said anyway.

For years, my college hosted something called a “listserv” (I don’t know why there’s no “e” on the end of the word). People posted whatever was on their minds about workrelated issues, and other people commented as if they were yelling down the dormitory hall to friends, or sometimes at enemies.

People used their real names on the listserv because that was the rule. If you had something to say, the rest of the group made you stand behind (and sometimes eat) your words. The group offered the ultimate in self-policing, often becoming loud and raucous in an entertaining way, assuming you weren’t caught in the crossfire.

Some of the commenters occasionally became vicious, and there were a few examples of the pack savaging wounded prey. I always think it’s odd that people seem so eager to say seemingly everything on their minds in front of peers; remaining mean and mad takes a lot of energy.

All of this is a precursor to the listserv’s death, which we were told was hastened by the cost of running it. Apparently, it’s expensive to run a listserv, even as Google offers something similar for free. So people were instructed to move over to Google and continue sniping, advising, seeking advice, showing off and lurking there.

An interesting thing happened on the listserv’s death lap, though. One regu-

lar participant suggested that, given the group’s pending demise, it would be a good idea to get to know each other better.

It was a small thought and kind of late in the game considering the savagery some of the commenters had wreaked upon each other over the years. But the commenter forged on anyway, talking about what she has done since graduation: Turns out she is working on a national magazine, starting up an online writing community, freelancing for other online publications and considering a return to teaching. Nothing earthshaking, perhaps, but interesting and admirable nonetheless. She seemed happy, and not in a superior way.

And then a remarkable thing happened: Former combatants chimed in with their personal updates. Some were heartwarming (odds overcome, challenges won), and others were sad (personal issues, lost jobs), but all seemed offered in the spirit of connection and reconnection. As the list of detailed responses passed 100, I learned a lot about what makes people tick by reading how they’ve bounced around and still wound up moving forward.

I’m sure this type of personal introspection wasn’t part of the listserv’s original goal. It was simply an unexpected byproduct of people, most of whom knew each other only through the glow of computers or phones, wanting to reach out and touch others they assumed, or perhaps hoped, were on a similar journey.

The internet was established as a communications vehicle. But we all know that just because we’re communicating online doesn’t mean we’re actually saying anything useful. That was more often than not the case here, too.

But in the end, people wound up being inspired not by technology but by the stories technology allowed them to share.

I didn’t tell anyone my story, remaining a lurker to the bittersweet end. Maybe I should reconsider my engagement quotient, having peeped into the lives of so many others.

Or maybe I’ll just click on over to Google and see what’s happening.

BUCKING THE SYSTEM

Mike Morath’s interest in this project stems from his desire to help all children throughout Dallas. Our city and our school district’s overall reputation are not impacted only by District 2 schools. The petition merely begins the conversation on what we might do to improve DISD. No harm in that, is there? For the record, I’m a Woodrow parent and District 2 resident.

I voted for the Trinity project like 15 years ago because it was all pictures of flowers and kayaks. Now I’m bitter and assume money rules the day in Dallas. If you want the support of skeptics like me, I need to see some details — otherwise I assume it’s all about race and/or money.

HOME-RULE VS. WHITE ROCK ISD

Imagine if all of our trustees were in the neighborhood — our neighbors, our kids’ soccer coaches, members of our churches, the people you bump into at Starbucks or the grocery store. That is what real accountability looks like.

—DallasMom1

The areas that would support the new White Rock ISD essentially subsidize the rest of DISD. If they split off, they could keep the money more local. That would allow for better/more teachers/principals and shrink the classroom size.

WHY NOT A RESTAURANT?

I have lived in Texas for the last five years. I first lived in McKinney, then Richardson, slowly making my way into Dallas. Honestly, my first couple years here were not the best. I struggled adjusting and didn’t feel like I could call Texas home. I’m from a small city in Kansas, so living in a big city would be challenging, right? Well surprisingly not, and there is one reason why: White Rock Lake. The beauty of the lake surprised me, and the small-town, community feel was something I would expect to experience back home, not in the heart of Dallas. After three years of struggling with my move to Texas I finally felt like I could be happy here. The first few months I lived by the lake I wished there was a restaurant closer so I could enjoy the view from a patio. The lake has so much to offer, so why not a restaurant? My family visits the lake many times a week to exercise, picnic, explore, and to observe wildlife. The lake is a place to remove yourself from the hustle and bustle of city life, and it needs to be preserved, not developed. I am also a photographer, and White Rock Lake is my go-to place for fine art nature shots. I recently discovered Boy Scout Hill, and it is my favorite place to photograph the entire lake.

Remodeling and New Construction Talk...

Top 5 Dallas Bathroom Design Trends for 2014

Across the country, elegant remodeling themes and trends are contributing to the ascendancy of the once humble bathroom. We scoured the national trends according to Houzz, HGTV, Professional Remodeler, and others to compare them with our experience in order to present the Top 5 Dallas Bathroom Trends for 2014.

1. The Spa Experience:

To provide an outlet from the stresses of work and personal obligations, many of our neighbors are creating serenity in the form of therapeutic, spa-like bathrooms. In creating this spa experience, we have used natural materials, as well as rich textural elements in our designs. Visually open showers with multiple shower heads, angled body sprays, and bubble massage baths all contribute to the feeling of relaxation and well-being that you would expect at a luxurious spa.

2. Open Showers:

Today’s elegant showers blend in almost seamlessly with the bathroom design through frame-less shower glass and curb-less ooring. Bathroom ooring now runs continuously into the shower area, which no longer requires a curb to step over. Shower glass is sleek and elegant with no framing to interrupt the view of the detailed tile work behind.

3. Freestanding Tubs:

A structural element and a focal point of many of today’s bathrooms, the simplicity and beauty of a freestanding tub is an attractive option. It creates a larger more open feeling bathroom by allowing the ooring to continue through to the wall behind. is element can also add a unique aesthetic – with a vintage design, modern shape, or contrasting color.

4. Furniture-Styled Vanities:

Vanities no longer have to be built into the wall. Furniture style vanities add of sense of living room elegance to the bathroom. Because they are not attached to a wall or built into the ooring, it allows the tile to continue beyond, creating greater continuity of the bathroom’s appearance. Hovering and cantilevered vanities are also becoming more popular, along with open shelving.

5. Elaborate Floor and Backsplash Tiles:

Today, designers are implementing elaborate floor and wall tile designs by mixing mosaic tile work with other shapes, materials and textures. This pattern, or visually interesting effect can also be achieved with uniform natural stone and simple subway tiles to create a serene, unified, and open feeling. Glass and matte tiles or multicolored tile sheets are also being used to create visually stunning walls as focal points around vanities and cabinets.

While design trends are changing, everyone wants to live in a home with beautifully designed, highly functional kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re thinking about remodeling either of these rooms in your home, give Bella Vista Company a call and we’ll discuss the best solutions for your needs.

Finding the perfect gift can be a challenge, especially when shopping for someone with eclectic tastes.

Two years ago, neighbor Mike Clem wandered into Random in Hillside Village Shopping Center at Abrams and Mockingbird to find his wife, Shelly, a Valentine’s Day gift.

He found something he liked. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave him an idea: a book cut into the letter “S” for “Shelly.” He asked the lady at the counter if she had anything like that, and she said, “No, but if you make one and bring it in, I’ll sell it.”

As it happens, Mike has quite a knack for craftsmanship. For years, he built high-performance engines for racing Formula Onestyle cars, and he developed a meticulous attention to fine detail while working on luxury vehicles such as Lamborghinis and Porsches.

Not only did he have the skills, he also had the tools he needed in order to take on a book-cutting project — a band saw, a drill, and other heavy machinery.

The first one wasn’t very good, Mike admits. “It took a few weeks to figure it out.”

But he did figure it out, and he soon found

that people loved the idea. He and Shelly started selling the book letters on Etsy, where they flew off the shelves, so to speak.

People buy them for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, graduation gifts, kid gifts, wedding day centerpieces, and so on.

Although book letters are still the bread and butter of the business, the Clems have started experimenting with other ideas as well. Making silhouettes of boots, hearts or other shapes, for example, or cutting shapes or letters into the heart of a book.

ativity in everyone,” Shelly says. “We have some books that we leave sitting out because we don’t know what to make them. Sometimes it takes just passing by them and seeing them over and over again.”

The Clems say they are happy to help customize a book letter, within reason, by using someone’s favorite novel, children’s books or college textbooks.

Into the wild

“My head can fit in there,” Rylan Price says matter-of-factly, pointing to the open mouth of a stuffed alligator head sitting on the entry-hall table.

And then, in the true form of a 6-yearold, he proceeds to demonstrate.

The alligator head is just one of many exciting things to see in the Prices’ house. Rylan’s dad, Jason Price, is a sport hunter, and if the number of animals and animal heads in his front office are any indication, he’s pretty good at it.

“My husband is very motivated by trophies,” Beth Price says.

Most of his collection consists of ducks, but he also has an aoudad head, a tundra swan, a badger and even a bearded hen.

“Hens do not normally have a beard,” Beth explains. “When you turkey hunt, the males usually have a beard, and that’s kind of how you can tell how good the turkey is — based on its beard. So anyways, it’s very weird that, that hen has a beard.”

Aside from hunting trophies, Jason also has several John James “J. J.” Audubon lithographs from the first edition of Audubon’s book “Birds of America.”

And Beth has a niche collection as well. The walls of her kitchen are lined with dozens of beautiful restaurant menus from around the world, which she’s saved over the years and framed.

The Prices’ home will be on the Hollywood-Santa Monica home tour in April. If you’re one of those people who goes on home tours to glean home décor inspiration, this year’s Hollywood-Santa Monica tour has some interesting finds — from a one-bedroom duplex that makes a small space feel comfortable and functional, to a spacious five-bedroom house with two living areas and a custom-designed, screened-in porch.

And, of course, the Prices’ taxidermy menagerie. Unfortunately, Rylan won’t be there to show you how his head can fit into the mouth of the alligator, but maybe you can talk your friend into trying.

SARA VRACAR & BOBBY TANEV RESIDENCE

Buckner & Hermosa

BUILT IN: 1950

REMODELED IN: FEB 2013-APRIL 2013

THE MISSION: KITCHEN REMODEL

When Sara Vracar and Bobby Tanev bought their house on Buckner last year, they were excited to have enough lot space for horses. They weren’t, however, excited about how outdated the house was.

“Nothing was done,” Vracar says. “I’m not sure anything had been updated since the 70s. We’re still working on it. It’s a work in progress.”

The first project they tackled was the master bathroom. The original bathroom was tiny, and Vracar wasn’t having it.

They tried to save a little money by hir-

ing an independent worker to turn the sunroom into the bathroom, but there were so many issues, they later regretted that decision.

“It’s pretty, but we’ve already had to have people come in and do more work,” Vracar says. “We should’ve hired somebody who knew what they were doing from the beginning.”

Luckily it was just the bathroom, but when it came time to remodel the kitchen, they decided not to make the same mistake twice, especially since they weren’t entirely sure what they wanted.

“The kitchen was the space we really wanted to concentrate on,” Vracar explains, leaning against the kitchen counter. “This is where most people are going to be spending time when we’re entertaining.”

They knew they wanted to knock out the wall between the kitchen and the living room, to open up the space, and Vracar knew she wanted a combination of dark and light material. Other than that, she really hadn’t considered the layout.

They hired Kitchen Design Concepts, which helped them nail down a design that was both aesthetic and functional.

“I needed help with the functional part,” Vracar says. “I had no idea what I wanted where. So that was helpful, and now that I’ve been using it for months, everything seems to flow perfectly. Things I never thought of.”

After knocking out the walls between the kitchen and the living room, they had room to add an extra large island. They used a white polished caesarstone for the topper on the island over Ultracraft cabinets with a cocoa finish.

The caesarstone is practically impossible to stain, which Vracar and Tanev have already tested.

They used Breckenridge door style cabinets throughout, but the cabinets for the kitchen counters were painted with an arctic white finish, which contrast nicely with the dark verde minus soapstone they chose for the countertops.

“We’ve been really pleased,” Vracar says.

KNOW OF A HOME WE SHOULD FEATURE? Email launch@advocatemag.com

RUGGERI RESIDENCE

Kenwood & Norris

BUILT IN: 1941

REMODELED IN: JUNE 2013-OCT 2013

THE MISSION: EXTRA ROOM

Ashley and Tony Ruggeri’s home on Kenwood was becoming a little cramped. When they found out Ashley was pregnant, they decided they needed to expand their home in order to accommodate their expanding family — and fast.

“I think we decided we were going to do the remodel in 2009, but it was my job to get it started,” Tony admits. “When we found out she was pregnant, we were like, ‘OK, we’ve got to call somebody.’ ”

The house was built in 1941, and Tony bought the house in 2005 from the original owners.

“When I bought it, it was like a step back in time, because they really hadn’t changed anything,” Tony explains.

The house had a pink tile bathroom, which Tony immediately updated on his own — a project that turned into quite a chore. But the timeless aspect wasn’t all bad.

“It also had a lot of really beautiful features, like all the glass doorknobs and a breakfast nook in the kitchen,” Tony says.

In 2009, Ashley and Tony married, and Ashley moved into the home. They tackled a couple other projects, such as painting the house and retiling the kitchen floor, but nothing major.

When they found out Ashley was pregnant, they enlisted the help of The Burke Company to make some muchneeded additions.

“They’re a Lakewood contractor, so

they have a lot of experience in Lakewood. They really understand how to redevelop these old houses, which is why we chose them,” Tony says.

The Burke Company built a laundry room onto the house where the back door for the kitchen used to be. They used tile floor and sturdy storage units that can handle a lot of wear and tear.

“This room has become a room I’m in 24-7, whether it’s cleaning bottles, or doing laundry, or letting the dogs in and out,” Ashley says. “It’s been awesome to have.”

Tony’s office, which was conveniently located beside the master bedroom, became a baby room. Before it was his office, it was a porch, so the room needed pretty extensive updating in order to be baby-room-ready.

There was a slab foundation, wood paneling on the walls and a window from the master bedroom. The Burke Company put in wood flooring, matched as closely as possible with the wood in the rest of the house, and also removed the window and wood panels.

Because Tony lost his office, the couple built shelves into the living room so Tony would have a place to sit and read.

Along the same side of the house as the laundry room, the Ruggeris also added a spacious master bathroom and walk-in closet.

“Being pregnant and going through a remodel — you can imagine how anxious I was to get this done,” Ashley says. “It was kind of a race against time.”

The end date for the remodel was set for three weeks after Ashley’s due date, but the Ruggeris’ contractor kept her due date on his folder during the project, and the crew managed to finish construction a month earlier than originally planned. It was just in the nick of time, because Ashley went into labor with their son a week early.

“So I was in labor on Tuesday, and Tony and our families were moving everything into our house on Thursday, so we could bring him home on Saturday — to our home,” Ashley says. “Which was really cool.” Brittany Nunn

Woodrow turns 85

It’s not uncommon to find students with multiple family connections at Woodrow Wilson High School. For Bradley Sue Howell and her family, their Woodrow interconnectedness is a tangled web.

Bradley Sue Howell graduated from Woodrow in ’51. She began working as the librarian at Woodrow when her daughter, Jane Walker, was a senior. Walker graduated in ’82, and Howell continued to work as the librarian until 2006, when her grandson Wesley Walker graduated. “Wesley and I graduated together,” she says with a chuckle. Her granddaughter, Angela Hill, also graduated from Woodrow in 2004, and Hill is having a baby girl, Amelia, who is predestined to trickle through the Woodrow feeder pattern as well, which will give their family four generations of Woodrow Wildcats.

As a precursor to Woodrow’s 85th anniversary celebration, which is focused on remembering the various decades of the school’s history, Bradley Sue, Jane and Angela talk about their own memories of Woodrow Wilson.

What were y’all involved in?

BSH: I was in the symphony. We had a symphony back then, back in the ‘50s. I played violin. We played at Fair Park Auditorium. We were really big-time.

JW: I was a band nerd. I did band, orchestra and choir.

AH: I just did band and choir. I didn’t have time for orchestra. I was in the Woodrow musicals.

JW: She was involved in everything, and Wesley was the drum major. Do you remember the musicals?

AH: I did “42nd Street,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Hello Dolly!” and “Oklahoma.”

BSH: Wesley did “Les Mis,” and then he was in the pit for that bad one.

JW: Oh yeah, it was a modern one, and that went against the grain of Woodrow.

BSH: Everybody complained in the whole community.

JW: So now they’re back to doing traditional musicals.

What did you eat for lunch?

BSH: Oh, I remember the lunchroom. It was divided. The boys ate on one side and the girls ate on the other, and the teachers’ table was right down the middle.

JW: Looking back, I always think how fattening my lunches were. We had real plates and real silverware when I went to lunch. So, was there ever a point where people could go o campus for lunch?

BSH: Yeah, years ago. You had to have a permit saying that someone was at your house in order to do the lunch.

JW: There were still kids who would run,

32 lakewood.advocatemag.com APRIL 2014 Launch COMMUNITY

go get lunch, and come back.

BSH: When Jack in the Box came in.

AH: That’s the one food source around there.

BSH: A lot of them used to go to Dan’s, which is not there anymore. They had the best french fries.

JW: That was definitely there when I was in school.

BSH: And of course there was Kip’s Big Boy. Did any historical events happen when you were at Woodrow?

JW: When President Reagan was shot at. I really didn’t think much about it, to tell you the truth. I just remember people talking about it.

AH: 9/11. Teachers tried to continue on with the day, but with that much chaos, in most classes we just watched the news and what was going on. Do any memorable outfits come to mind?

JW: When I got my band jacket, I probably wore it every day to school.

BSH: All I remember is we couldn’t wear pants, even in cold weather. If you wore them in cold weather, you had to take them off and put them in your locker.

AH: My junior year they started some of the dress codes. Like you had to wear a belt, and your shirt tucked in, no flip flops. I think all those went out the door after a few months.

JW: They didn’t go to uniforms until both of my kids graduated. They both missed the Woodrow uniforms. Anything you want to add?

BSH: Well, when I was in school, we didn’t have computers, so we had to run for classes. You had to figure out your schedule, and run to that class, and the teacher had 25 little tickets. If you were one of the first 25 in there, you got a ticket and you could stay in that class. Then when the bell rang, you had to run to the next one. “This pizza is authentic New York-style, Italian pizza,” says Charlie Green, owner of Olivella’s Neo Pizza Napoletana. The restaurant’s Neapolitanstyle pizza resembles more of a thin-crusted flatbread with sparse toppings, compared to the flu y, 16-inch crust often used for sopping up ranch dressing that most Americans are accustomed to. Additionally, Olivella’s pizzas — each topped with a homemade sauce using tomatoes imported from Italy, fresh basil, and mozzarella made fresh daily — are baked in minutes inside a piping-hot wood-fired oven. Olivella’s menu also has a variety of pizza toppings to choose from for diners looking for more complex flavors. The black tru e pizza, for instance, comes topped with mozzarella, speck (an Italian meat that is smoked then cured,) mushrooms and tru e oil.

“The mixing of the flour for the pizza dough is key for making a good Neapolitan pizza,” says Green, who adds that Olivella’s crust distinguishes it from other local pizzerias. But Green’s lips are sealed when it comes to revealing the secret ingredients that result

in Olivella’s thin, crisp crust — which almost magically holds up without getting soggy. “People like our pizza because it has a good backbone,” he says. Green acquired a taste for thin-crust pizza early in life, dining at iconic New York pizzerias that used generations-old Italian family recipes. Years later, when he relocated to Dallas, Green didn’t see any pizza joints comparable to his hometown favorites, so he decided to open one of his own. To ensure that his pizzas were authentic, Green recruited the assistance of Salvatore Olivella, the great-grandson of the family that opened Trianon in Naples, Italy, in 1923. Green opened his first restaurant, named for Olivella, in Highland Park, as well as a second location downtown, before opening Olivella’s in Hillside Village in 2012. Green says he chose the location on Mockingbird and Abrams because of its roomy patio. Outside at night, white twinkle lights dangle overhead, creating an ambiance with a touch of Old World romance, right in the heart of our neighborhood.

THE WELCOME TABLE

A slice of cake and a glass of Champagne are typically the perfect combination to end any celebration, but if you have a love for design and desserts, you will want to spoil your guests with a lovely dessert buffet. Whether it’s for a simple

baby shower or an extravagant wedding, you are sure to send your friends home feeling extra special.

Dessert buffets are becoming more popular and provide something sweet for everyone’s taste. Start with a theme such as what you are celebrating or seasonal colors. While deciding on the menu, include baked goods, candies, confections and the perfect cocktail.

Mint green and gold are two of my favorite spring colors, and my favorite item on this dessert table is the toasted coconut marshmallow.

Toasted coconut marshmallows

GROCERY LIST

4 envelopes unflavored gelatin

²⁄³ cup cold water

2 ½ cups granulated sugar

½ cup water

²⁄³ cup light corn syrup

½ teaspoon coconut extract

2 cups toasted coconut

DIRECTIONS

1. Brush 9x13-inch baking dish with vegetable oil and line with plastic wrap. Sprinkle ½ cup toasted coconut to cover the bottom of the pan.

2. Pour ²⁄³ cup water into the bowl of the mixer with whisk attached. Sprinkle gelatin over water and let stand until softened, about 5 minutes.

3. In a medium saucepan, stir together sugar, corn syrup and ½ cup water and bring to boil, stirring often. Continue boiling until syrup reaches 238 F on a candy thermometer (soft ball stage).

4. Turn the mixer on low and add syrup to gelatin. Beat on low until slightly cooled and then gradually increase speed to high. Continue beating until the mixture is cool and peaks form.

5. Pour mixture into prepared pan (over toasted coconut). Immediately sprinkle ½ cup toasted coconut to cover the top of the marshmallows.

6. Allow marshmallows to cool and become firm, about 3 hours. Pour remaining toasted coconut into a bowl. Dust a cutting board with confectioners sugar and coat your knife with oil. Cut marshmallows into desired size and toss each piece in toasted coconut to coat completely. Store marshmallows in airtight container for up to 1 week.

A place to be one with nature

Living in the fabled “glass house” could make even the most unabashed individuals feel exposed, but for neighbor Robert Wright it was a real-life dream come true.

Before moving to his current home in Little Forest Hills, Wright wanted to build a greenhouse-like home on property he owned in the Dallas area.

“I’d designed a house that was a glass box in a garden,” Wright says. “It was 1,000 square feet, and I had a 16,000-square-foot-lot. So 1,000 square feet would be covered, and everything else was going to be outdoors.” >>

When opened, the sliding glass doors give the impression that the entire downstairs is actually a giant porch. “The whole ‘glass house’ thing is exactly what we were trying to do,” architect Thad Reeves says. “When the weather is nice, to be able to open up those doors and feel like you’re living outside.”

Above/ The downstairs floor is a ground, polished concrete. “So it’s a concrete slab, and they came in and ground it with a diamond grinder and then polished it with a polishing wheel and then sealed it,” Reeves says. Instead of covering the ceiling with sheetrock, the designers left the wooden trusses exposed.

>>The bad news is that no one else shared his enthusiasm. “I couldn’t find anybody to finance it because they said it was a ‘house for one,’ ” he explains — meaning that he would be the only person who could live in the small space, and if he ever tried to sell it, he’d most likely be the only person who would truly appreciate its value.

The good news, however, is that someone else had a similar idea and was already three steps ahead.

In 2005, Dallas architects Truett Roberts and Thad Reeves with TKTR Architects designed a house that featured several floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and a series of a rough, inexpensive finishes, making the structure reminiscent of a high-end tree house. Before it was finished, Reeves left the company to form A Gruppo Architects, but TKTR Architects forged ahead, and the house eventually was built in Little Forest Hills in 2009.

Roberts and Reeves had four main objectives. They wanted to create something that felt like a part of the backyard but that still maintained a level of privacy, and they wanted the house to embody modern design and innovative architectural elements yet stay within the original owner’s modest budget.

“We don’t shy away from small houses that are a lot of design but inexpensive to build, especially in East Dallas,” Roberts says.

In the end, the house measured 1,450 square feet, although the extended overhangs from the roof make it look slightly larger from the outside.

The team also designed the home to be built for a mere $100 per square foot, although Roberts says he’s not sure what the official total was, and he doubts it could be built for that today.

Once it was complete, the original owner, an avid gardener, honed the surrounding landscape to give it the Edenlike lushness the property boasts today, and then he put the house on the market.

That’s when Wright’s daughter, also a Dallas architect, saw the house on the cover of a local architectural publication and immediately called Wright to tell him about it.

“I bought it that day,” Wright says.

The stairs are made from laminated strand lumber, and the upstairs floor is made from polyurethane plywood. The handrail was constructed from laminated strand lumber, steel posts and cables, completing the loft-like feel.

A polycarbonate wall near the stairwell lets in sunlight without being completely transparent. By layering the material, it performs similarly to insulated glass, although it’s not as insulated as a typical wall, Reeves says.

MODERN COMFORT

A surprisingly modern mindset

The home of Mike and Donna Webster poses on a corner in Lakewood Heights with striking confidence. It has both a simplicity and elegance that mid-century modern architecture seems to capture so well. >>

52 lakewood.advocatemag.com APRIL 2014

The living room is the epitome of Mike’s architectural expertise and Donna’s eclectic design. Mike designed the living room to overlap the kitchen, but in order to keep the rooms distinct, he dropped the kitchen ceiling. “From the entertaining standpoint it has worked out perfectly, because we can use the whole space,” Mike says.

APRIL 2014 lakewood.advocatemag.com 53

Mike’s “man cave” is more of an art studio than a stereotypical land-of-no-return, but even still, Donna isn’t allowed to comment on the nature of its tidiness (or lack thereof). The room has tile floors, so Mike can “roll the carpet up and spill anything he wants on it.” It also has a sliding glass door that lets in plenty of natural light and lets out paint fumes when open.

Donna was determined to find the perfect fireplace for the living room because she wanted that to be the focal point of the room, rather than a TV. An old French country table the Websters use to separate the kitchen and living room has become an unexpected guest favorite. “We probably get more compliments on this table,” Mike says. “It sort of offsets and complements some of the more sleek design pieces.” Donna is “a big white wall person,” she says. “Some people think it can be cold.” But she cozies it up by utilizing large, colorful abstract paintings.

>>When the Websters bought the property three years ago, building such a home wasn’t even on their radar.

“We were going for more of a rustic modern, Hill Country style,” Donna says, “but it took us a while to develop the floor plans, so we started to go to home tours. We went on the Dallas Modern Home Tour, and we fell in love with modern architecture. So we switched gears.”

The Websters chose Lakewood Heights because there isn’t a conservation or historical district in place to cramp their architectural urges.

However, they wanted to be respectful of the neighborhood.

“There are some really pretty cottages here, so we didn’t want our house to overwhelm the neighborhood,” Donna says.

Mike has an architectural background and Donna is an interior designer, so between the two, they had strong opinions about the end product. They sought modern builders and found Tom Grieco to help them “wrap their ideas in his mid-century modern style.” >>

“We didn’t want the kitchen to feel kitcheny,” Donna says. “We wanted it to feel architectural.” One aspect that was especially problematic was deciding whether to place the sink or the stove on the island. They would have preferred not to put either one on the island, but they wanted the space to be symmetrical, so — in order to spare themselves the issue of overhead vents blocking the view of living room they bit the bullet and installed a sink, but they made it as discreet as possible.

>>“The really rewarding thing about all this is, we’d have people come by all the time when we were building it and say, ‘This house is great. This is the kind of style we need around here.’ ” Mike says. “We were just so grateful it was being so well received.”

Once construction was complete, Donna added her interior design touch, mixing and matching old pieces of furniture and decor with new pieces to make the rooms look sleek and modern yet still comfortable.

“I don’t really care for contemporary,” Mike says. “It’s too stark. It’s too stiff. These things are warm. They have meaning to us.”

Above/ The first thing guests experience is the spacious entry hall. “What we wanted to accomplish in a house was a lot of natural light,” Mike says. “We want it to feel open but a lot of definitive spaces. The big thing we wanted was for people to walk in the door and immediately get a sense of the house.”

(Donna even found a space for an old stone statue by the front door. It’s technically a garden piece, but Donna thinks it belongs indoors. “Venus de Milo is what my kids and I have coined her,” Donna says. “Venus has traveled with me everywhere for 35 years.”)

Right/ The Websters wanted their home to embrace the street yet still offer some privacy. By pushing the front door away from the street, they were able to create a serene courtyard area. “We’ve always wanted a really gracious entrance to the house with a place where we could sit,” Mike explains. The Websters enjoy the view of the courtyard from their formal dining room, which overlooks the yard through a large window wall.

Artfully Cluttered

A collector’s paradise

If you drove by Rob and Suzy Renz’s house in 2008 and then drove by today, you’d probably do a double take.

In 2009, the Renz house was stripped down to the floors and rebuilt with a refreshing new look by Bella Vista Company.

But as remarkable as the complete remodel is, the most noteworthy thing about the Renz home is the way they’ve finished it.

Suzy and Rob are pack rats at heart.

“We’ve been married 30 years, so we’ve been collecting a long, long time,” Suzy says. “We go to antique stores all the time. Wherever we are, if we’re in a small town somewhere, we’ll go find the antique stores and look around. Rob likes to do that stuff with me, which is nice.”

Fortunately, they have the vision and talent to use the items they find as tasteful decor or repurpose them into custom-made furniture. “My architect calls it Texas eclectic,” Suzy says of her style. “It used to be called country, but when I think of country, I think of doilies and lace, and that’s not me at all. This is more Hill Country mixed with craftsman.”

They also incorporated quirky finds into the finish-out of the house while it was being rebuilt.

“I found a guy who goes to Hungary several times a year, and he imports containers full of furniture and architectural salvage,” Suzy says. “So we bought a lot of that. Once the plans were drawn, we spent a day at his warehouse picking stuff out.”

For the parts of the house that aren’t actually old, the Renzes paid a faux-finisher to make them look that way, such as the island in their kitchen. “The island is new,” Suzy says. “Everyone thinks it’s old, but it’s faux-finished.”

Top/The kitchen is the same size as it was before the remodel, which is unusual for a house built in 1952, so they didn’t have to rework the plumbing. Suzy did, however, manage to squeeze in a coveted walk-in pantry.

Below/One day Suzy had the idea to use a collection of old wine corks to create a mural as the backsplash of the wet bar, and she asked a friend to design it for her. “We really did drink all the wine,” she says, laughing.

Suzy found a collection of factory molds, which were used to form steel into various objects before the days of plastic. The pieces now grace the living room above the fireplace, along with some old railroad pieces.

The Renzes’ house was featured on the Dallas County Master Gardener annual garden tour in October 2009 and 2013, the Lakewood Home Tour in November 2010, and the Nate Berkus Show in January 2011.

Above/ For years, the Renzes have been collecting antique bottles, particularly large, colorful Seltzer bottles.

Left/ The Renzes enjoy watching the TV show “American Pickers,” where they’ve picked up some helpful hints. “Did you know stop signs were yellow until the 1930s, and they turned red? We learned that on ‘American Pickers,’ so when I saw that stop sign in Round Top [Texas], I immediately bought it.”

“We like old stuff,” Suzy explains, “which is funny because I was raised in a house with a bunch of fine antiques and we could never put our feet up on anything, and we are so not that way. We just think, if it gets gauged or if there’s a water spot on it, so what? Because everything we have is old anyways.”

During the remodel, Rob added a man cave/office with plenty of shelving for his war history books and model cars and planes. They also designed a “scrapbook countertop” where they used acrylic to freeze various sentimental items such as matchbooks, bottle caps, photos, maps and patches into the counter. “A lot of the matchbooks are from when we were first dating,” Suzy says, “and maps from places we’ve traveled, so it was fun putting this together.”

A filmmaker, an environmentalist and Earth Day Dallas founder

Trammell S. Crow conspire to spread the word about ‘the cure’ for the world’s energy crisis

Behind the closed door of his home o ce in East Dallas, Michael Henning leans toward his phone and listens intently. The speaker emits the voice of New Jersey resident

Mike Strizki into the little room, and it rattles against the walls like rocks in a tin can.

“We’re at a change in history between the horse and bug-

gy and the automobile,” Strizki near-shouts. “And they’re claiming collapse, but we’re on the verge of a full paradigm shift in the way energy is stored and reconverted. And we’ve had the technology for years, and they’ve tried to suppress it,” he says, pausing.

“And they’ve done a damn good job,” Henning encourages.

“But once the public knows about it, knows there’s a cure,” Strizki continues. “They’re going to start to demand it. Americans are right on the verge of that right now. Things are changing, big time, and energy is the No. 1 cause.”

A casual listener might be hard pressed to fully decipher the men’s conversation. But they are excited to share their ideas about hydrogen energy, which they aim to do both via this year’s Earth Day Texas and through a documentary that will wrap soon.

Henning is a filmmaker who produced and directed a 2009 documentary featuring Woody Harrelson called “Hempsters” about the oft-taboo hemp plant.

Strizki gained notoriety in 2006 when he launched the Hydrogen House Project and became the first resident in the United States to run his home entirely on solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells, a little empire complete with a hydrogen vehicle fueling station.

Strizki, an engineer, began using his home as the flagship prototype for his company, Strizki Systems, which designs and installs clean and renewable solar hydrogen systems for homes and businesses. He has even installed systems in the homes of celebrities, including consulting Johnny Depp on how to convert his Caribbean island home to solar hydrogen technology.

When Henning heard the story on NPR about this man making energy in his garage, he was intrigued, but he pictured a redneck doomsday prepper hunkered down, waiting for the apocalypse, Henning quips. What he found, when he went to New Jersey to see the system for himself, was a man who has the knowledge and tools to upend the energy industry.

For decades, scientists and engineers have been harnessing the power of hydrogen and making it clean and accessible, but governments and industries are not using it to its potential, Strizki says.

Strizki preaches that we have the “keys to the cage” — the resources, the technol-

ogy, the urgency — to radically change the power industry, yet need to employ them.

Henning wholeheartedly agrees; creating hydrogen is so simple that high schoolers have been doing it in chemistry labs for decades, he says. He agrees so much that he has made Strizki the focus of his next film, tentatively called “Strizki: The Keys to the Cage.”

Henning wants the movie to depict the problem, which is this: We have what we need to save the world from its dependence on non-renewable energy; car companies will begin selling hydrogen fuel cell cars next year, in fact. But we are not supporting the technology. For instance, there are few fueling stations for said vehicles. Using Strizki as an example, Henning aims to show the public a new world of possibilities.

“We’re going to bust all the myths about hydrogen, and when people find out how duped they have been … it’s shocking,” Henning says.

The pieces fall together

While working on “Hempsters,” Henning met East Dallasite Michael Cain, the founder of the Deep Ellum Film Festival (now the Dallas Film Society).

In 2011, real estate investment broker Trammell S. Crow founded Earth Day Dallas and hired Cain as executive director of the event.

Since then, Earth Day Dallas has grown to be one of the biggest Earth Day events in the nation and recently was renamed Earth Day Texas, “a family-friendly and freeadmission event that allows leaders in the corporate, academic and non-profit worlds to unite and show Texans how green lifestyle choices can lower their cost of living, improve their health, and help save the environment,” according to the website.

Over the years, as Cain worked to build Earth Day Texas and Henning delved headlong into researching hydrogen, the two stayed in contact.

Crow and Cain brought on Henning to help give Earth Day Texas 2014, slated for April 26-27, more hydrogenfocused exhibitors.

Earth Day Texas already had more than 70 electric and hybrid vehicles lined up for the event. Attendees also will get to meet

Strizki, an o cial Earth Day speaker who will expose them to products such as a fuel cell vehicle, a portable charge station capable of providing continuous o -grid electricity called the Joule Box, cellphone chargers, flexible solar panels and even a water purification system.

The final scene in the movie about Strizki also will be filmed at the two-day event, Henning says.

And even before Earth Day festivities or movie releases, the e orts of Strizki and Henning are resulting in action. Henning, on behalf of Earth Day Texas, is working with a company called Air Products to build a hydrogen highway across Texas — that is, a chain of hydrogen-equipped fueling stations, Cain says.

Air Products is the No. 1 supplier of hydrogen in the country, which makes it the ideal candidate to establish the first hydrogen highway in Texas.

Crow, Cain and Henning hope this year’s Earth Day Texas will be the much-needed catalyst in pushing the hydrogen movement forward by bringing the fuel suppliers together with the vehicle suppliers, neither of which can exist without the other.

“That’s their dilemma, is who is going to go first?” Henning says. “What we’re trying to do in order to solve that problem is to take the initiative, so we can solve this at the event.”

Is this the “change in history between the horse and buggy and the automobile” that Strizki was talking about?

“If you think of the synergy of how this all came about,” Cain says, “Michael was on the journey to make this movie, which supports a movement that he feels very passionate about, and at the end of the day, every great movie has a great ending. The great ending is this hydrogen highway, culminating at an event with 60,000 people, surrounded by all 70 hybrid electric vehicles.”

And who would have thought Texas, a state historically steeped in oil and gas, would be one of the first states to truly embrace this new system?

“What a nice surprise ending,” Cain muses. TO LEARN MORE, VISIT THESE WEB PAGES: facebook.com/StrizkiOutOfTheBox hydrogenhouseproject.org earthdaytx.org

THRILL OF THE HUNT

Our neighborhood estate sales are full of surprising treasures COMMENT. Visit lakewood.advocatemag.com to tell us what you think.

couple of times.” As a furniture builder, Milam always has an eye out for interesting heavy metal, industrial-type items and other objects to repurpose. “File cabinets can become dresser drawers,” he says. “Old brass dishes can become light fixtures.”

Lakewood Heights resident Diana Hardin has been a fan of sales for decades since tagging along with her antique-hunting mom in East Texas. Hardin seeks out vintage Barbie dolls and doll clothing for her large collection and as a legacy for her daughter. She also searches for funky clothing and purses, old luggage, and antique books and ephemera for collage art and decoupage. Like Milam, Hardin creates new pieces, which she sells in her Etsy shop.

care of herself. Restores your faith in humanity, doesn’t it?

At another sale that Hardin went to, a woman and her adult son were selling the woman’s belongings in preparation for her move to a retirement home. As folks bought her possessions, she explained about each item, where it came from, when she bought it, why it was special. Hardin noticed that as the son helped carry purchases to vehicles, he was crying.

It has everything — comedy, drama. You’ll laugh! You’ll cry!

The newest Spielberg film, right? Wrong. It’s our neighborhood estate sales. And neighbors make a beeline for them.

At a recent sale near Swiss Avenue, folks waited in a long blockbuster-worthy line in 28-degree weather to get inside to root through the possessions of former showgirl Willetta Stellmacher, whom the Advocate featured in November 2011. She rubbed elbows with Frank Sinatra, and his autographed photo was displayed during the sale.

But isn’t an estate sale nothing more than a dressed-up, indoor garage sale? Au contraire. Ask Mike Milam, firefighter at Station No. 8 and longtime resident of Old East Dallas. “I particularly love estate sales because they tell a greater story because of their completeness. Garage sales are, at best, a snippet of how the people lived or are living their lives. Estate sales offer a complete picture, everything from the pots and pans used daily to the outfit they only wore a

The big draw for estate sale fans like Milam and Hardin, though, is the thrill of the hunt, the rare and unknown. And did we mention surprising? Milam recalls a sale he attended years ago in which “everything in the house had been stolen.” He found items with sensor tags, benches from city parks, and bikes with snipped locks still attached.

Hardin, too, certainly stumbled upon the unexpected at the home of three elderly sisters. An entire room during the sale was devoted to the sisters’ assortment of vintage lingerie from the 1930s through the ‘50s. “Bullet bras, garter belts, lace, feathers ... I kept thinking how interesting and fun those ladies must have been,” muses Hardin.

And then there is the element of pathos at estate sales. Like those heart-tugging, “Terms of Endearment”-type scenes out of Hollywood, the stories behind the sales can evoke sadness. A true estate sale, after all, results from a death or a transition to another living arrangement. Greenland Hills resident and estate sale devotee Lee Ostermayer attended a neighborhood sale where the homeowner, a “sweet, elderly woman,” was overheard explaining that she was selling her belongings to pay for her husband’s funeral. On the spot, a customer wrote her a check for $5,000, exhorting her to keep her items and go take

More often than sad, though, estate sales are just plain fascinating, often a mixture of the everyday, the cups and books and tables, and the not-so-ordinary. How about a coffin? Perhaps you’re in the market for some used false teeth? Ostermayer saw these items for sale. Milam is now the reluctant owner of a vintage Charlie McCarthy dummy: “Its creepy factor is through the roof.” And Hardin, well, let’s just say she passed on a chance to purchase a stuffed family dog. “The taxidermy was very, very old,” she recalls with a shudder.

But Hardin and every other estate sale junkie will tell you that it’s the lure of the unknown that keeps them coming back. Hardin says, “It’s like a treasure hunt.” At a recent sale, she happened upon an antique French crystal and gilt chandelier for five bucks. A good cleaning and rewiring and voila! It now hangs in her office — and she’s since discovered that it’s worth more than $500.

Milam found a seemingly ordinary clothing rack for a few dollars, researched some markings on it, and was amazed to learn it was a rare piece from the turn of the century, worth about $1,200.

At a Lakewood sale, Ostermayer picked up a book titled “The World’s Great Letters.” Inside she discovered a love letter dated 1934 in lovely old-school cursive, the gentleman vowing to live the rest of his life trying to make his ladylove happy. “This was the sweetest dollar I ever spent,” she says.

Will that estate sale down the street be a “triumph of the human spirit”? A tearjerker? A laugh a minute? You just never know.

BUSINESS BUZZ

The lowdown on what’s up with neighborhood businesses

Send business news tips to livelocal@advocatemag.com

The temp

In April Ace Hardware is moving to a temporary location while it waits for the new building in Arboretum Village to be finished, says owner Khandoo Nagar. Nagar says Ace has to be out of its current location in Lakewood Shopping Center, where it has been serving the Lakewood community for more than 30 years, by April 15. The long-standing rumor is that Ace will be replaced by CVS, although nothing has been officially confirmed. Ace Hardware is moving to another Lincoln property at Gaston-Grand, the shopping center where Cane Rosso and the YMCA are located. It will take over the location Premium Title Lending occupied until recently. Calls to Premium Title have not been returned. Ace already is taking over the Premium Title space, constructing shelves and getting ready. Nagar says Ace might be closed for a week or two in April while it transitions to the temporary space, and then it will probably be there for several months. Nagar doesn’t know when the space in Arboretum Village will be complete, and Lincoln has not returned our calls to confirm a timeline for the construction.

New digs

Joey Milan, the owner of Dallas-based Digg’s Taco Shop, has been in serious talks with Lincoln Property Company about opening a new Digg’s location in the yet-to-be-finished Arboretum Village at the Gaston-Garland-Grand intersection. Last we heard, nothing was in writing. If all goes as planned, Digg’s will be sharing a space with Starbucks near the corner of Gaston and Garland. ”There will be one shell, and Starbucks will get 1,800 square feet, and we’ll get 2,200 square feet,” Milan explains. Milan says Lincoln hopes to finish construction on Arboretum Village sometime this summer, and then Digg’s will take a few months to finish out the project and hopefully open in the fall. Lincoln

More business bits

has not returned calls to Advocate regarding a timeline for the Arboretum Village construction or other possible future tenants. This will be Milan’s third Digg’s location. He originally founded Digg’s near SMU, right across Central from East Dallas. He then opened an Arlington location, but it recently closed and Milan is hoping to resurrect it in Southlake. Aside from Digg’s and Starbucks, we know of at least three other future tenants for the shopping center. First The Fresh Market signed on, and then Ace Hardware agreed to move from its current location in Lakewood Shopping Center to Arboretum Village. Then Luke’s Locker became the third tenant to sign on the dotted line.

Streched

Uptown Yoga is stretched to its limit in the Lakewood Shopping Center. Owner Jennifer Chitwood wants to stay in the area, so Uptown Yoga is relocating down the road near the Gaston-Garland-Grand intersection, in the shopping center next to Cane Rosso White Rock. The new space will be close to 2,500 square feet, as opposed to 1,700 square feet at the current location. She’s hoping the space will be complete in a couple of months.

2 Right down the street, Henderson Tap House hosted a grand opening in March with a three-day celebration. 3 Lakewood Growler, a bar/grower-filling station, opened just east of the Mockingbird-Abrams intersection. Neighbors can buy a 64-ounce glass growler or bring one in to tap into one of Lakewood Growler’s 36 all-Texas brews. 4 The upcoming Ginger Man Pub, which is being built in Lakewood Shopping Center in the location that previously belonged to Angelo’s Italian Restaurant, is turning the upstairs dining room into a semi-open porch. 5 After quite a bit of back-and-forth, the original Snu er’s Restaurant and Bar on Greenville managed to reopen in mid-March. The building was completely demolished in April 2013 and rebuilt from the ground up. 6 Megan Estep with BuzzBrews Kitchen says BuzzBrews is “scouting possibilities in a couple of areas, and will definitely be adding a new BuzzBrews in the East Dallas area.” 7 Neighbor Drew McWay opened PRO Martial Arts, a national franchise with more than 40 locations across the United States, in Lakewood in March

WEATHERING THE STORM

How faith plays a role in our country’s most polarizing issues

Weather extremes in our parts are generally met with shrugs, sighs and sage sayings like, “If you don’t like the Texas weather, wait a minute; it’ll change.”

We’ve had a winter beyond compare in recent memory. School closings. Power outages. Icy roads. Wintry mixes. Frigid temperatures. Oh, and then 70-degree days in between.

The flora and fauna are confused right along with the rest of us. They can’t figure when to bloom, when to come out of or stay in hibernation. As for us two-legged types, cabin fever has become more than a metaphor for being cooped up. Especially when you have young kids in the house.

Summers routinely now bring 100-plusdegree temperatures. Alternating cold spells and heat waves make some cry global warming and others scratch their heads. Are erratic weather patterns the effect of natural or human-caused climate change? Are extremes just aberrations that show up now and then over a long span of weather monitoring, or are they the product of erosion of the ozone layer from our unwillingness or inability to slow carbon emissions?

Science and politics don’t line up on this, partly because of the foul wind that blows between environmentalists and economists. Their back-and-forth generates more heat than light.

Everyday people of faith can contribute spiritually to these matters that seem so polarizing. For example, while we can’t be omniscient about the link between human activity and weather patterns or claim to change them by prayer, we can look upon nature as a living partner in the theater of being. We can resolve to treat it with care and make small changes to the way we live that will heal it where we can. God made the earth and commissioned us to tend it. We should be mindful stewards.

We should also be mindful stewards of our

brothers and sisters. Caring for creation and caring for our neighbor must go together. Business and residential practices that should change for nature’s good will cost. Those practices were not devised with the intent to destroy the environment, even if the effects of them now appear to. They also didn’t cause destruction overnight. Draconian measures that punish rather than incentivize will only

Religion can be used to rend or mend, to tear apart or put together. Conviction and passionate intensity can lead to the center instead of the fringes, toward the common good instead of self-interest.

draw pushback and keep us from progress.

It’s time to talk about a spirituality of business. The fair and just distribution of goods and services, and even the production of honest wealth, is a God-ordained activity. That doesn’t mean that business gets a pass to do whatever it wants in the name of the free market; it means that it gets to play fairly, though, without a presumption of greed or evil intent.

In “The Second Coming,” a poem of lament that bemoans a world in which “things fall apart,” William Butler Yeats said, “The best lack all conviction, while the worst/ Are full of passionate intensity.” Religion can be used to rend or mend, to tear apart or put together. Conviction and passionate intensity can lead to the center instead of the fringes, toward the common good instead of self-interest.

We need radical — not fanatical — faith. The word “radical” comes from a Latin word that means to go to the root or origin of something. Radicalism has centripetal force, drawing things in. Fanaticism is centrifugal, pulling things apart.

We can weather the weather together better.

Sue Coberly , a teacher at Lakewood Elementary, is retiring this year. Coberly has been teaching for 43 years and teaching at Lakewood Elementary for 36 years. She’s taught first, second and third grade. She was raised on a farm in Moorhead, Iowa, and she got her bachelor of science and masters of science from Oklahoma State University. Lakewood Elementary is hosting a retirement party for Coberly on May 14 at Matt’s Rancho Martinez from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Anyone is welcome.

Four years ago, four college kids from Dallas made a movie about their summer travels abroad, asking themselves — and the young people they encountered — about their belief in God. The film, “Beware of Christians,” was wildly successful, drawing big crowds on college campuses around the country and later receiving backing by Lascaux Films, a Dallas-based production company co-founded by former WFAA film critic Gary Cogill. The guys are preparing to release another movie, but this time, they’re ready for the big time. “Believe Me” was filmed in Austin’s fertile film scene and features well-known actors from prime-time television and Hollywood movies. Michael Allen, who grew up in Lakewood, is writer and co-producer. Will Bakke is writer and director. Alex Carroll is lead producer, and Matt Owen went on to a career in real estate.

Community

Construction is well underway — underground, actually — on the Dallas Arboretum parking garage on Garland Road just across from the gardens. The garage itself falls within the existing zoning with three stories above ground, and the Arboretum received approval from the city to build an underground tunnel below Garland to take visitors to the entrance. The entire project is scheduled to be complete this fall. The Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden recently reopened alongside Dallas Blooms after being closed for maintenance over the winter. The parking garage is being built to accommodate a rise in visitors to the Arboretum. According to a study, attendance is expected to double by the end of this year and continue to increase.

GLASS SHATTERED — SKI STUFF GONE.

Dabney Jungerman and his wife had just been trying to do a good deed. Some friends in the area had recently moved to Florida. The friends had been planning a ski trip, so the Jungermans offered to send some ski clothes. The clothes were in the car for shipment the next day.

The next morning, the couple found that their car window had been broken, and the suitcase full of ski clothes was gone.

“Unfortunately, my wife made the mistake of parking in the street,” he says. “It’s frustrating. They probably got $50 worth of clothing, and I’m out a $500 deductible.”

Jungerman has a tip that might help prevent the type of crime that occurred at their Lakewood home.

“People should keep their outside porch lights on,” he says. “If the street looks like a barren wasteland, it’s probably a lot more inviting to a crook.”

Dallas police Krystal Woods of the Northeast Patrol Division says to always remember to lock, take and hide — meaning lock the vehicle, take out all belongings and valuables, or hide them very well.

The Victim: Dabney Jungerman

The Crime: Burglary of a motor vehicle

Date: Monday, Feb. 24

Time: Between 11:30 p.m. (Feb. 24) and 7 a.m. (Feb. 25)

Location: 7100 block of Westbrook

“Burglars look for vehicles that are unsecured or unlocked. Burglars will often look for easily available targets,” she says. “Remember, whether at home or out shopping, always secure your valuables.”

Woods also notes that the department’s Operation ID is a tool to help officers possibly get property back after being stolen. The program records the serial numbers of all a resident’s property. One’s driver’s license number can be engraved on property, she says, or serial numbers can be placed in the police database for stolen equipment, which increases the chances of recovery.

What would Dallas ISD home rule mean for a possible White Rock ISD?

COMMENT. Visit lakewood.advocatemag.com and search Dallas ISD home rule to tell us what you think.

Several months ago, former State Rep. Allen Vaught floated the idea of public schools in East Dallas seceding from the Dallas Independent School District. Color me intrigued. East Dallas has a disproportionate share of topflight public schools. Kids are engaged, parents are actively involved, rigorous class courses are offered, and the principals and teachers are outstanding. So I was looking forward to a discussion about breaking apart from the behemoth that is DISD and creating our own little education utopia here in East Dallas. (I was also excited about the possibility of having a “Secede!” bumper sticker on my car. Finally.)

But the conversation surrounding the idea seemed to die down, and I haven’t heard much since.

Then, last month, a new group popped up — seemingly out of nowhere — to propose its own bold vision for DISD: Support Our Public Schools wants to hold an election to make DISD a “home rule” school district, which would allow the district to seek exemptions from a variety of state mandates and adopt a new governance structure. For the idea to get off the ground, SOPS has to collect roughly 25,000 signatures from registered voters. If successful, the DISD Board of Trustees would

be required to name a 15-member commission responsible for drafting a “charter” or constitution for the school district, which would then be presented to voters.

Right now, DISD is governed by nine locally elected trustees. Among other things, the new charter could do away with trustees altogether, call for some or all of them to be appointed (by the mayor? By the city council?), or something else entirely.

With such dramatic changes being proposed for the school district, my first thought was, how will this affect the children of DISD and their educational opportunities? My second thought was, what would this mean for a White Rock ISD?

I posed this question to DISD Trustee Mike Morath in early March. Morath is an avid supporter of the “home rule” idea. To say he is well versed on the subject of public education is an understatement, and his passion for creating a child-centered education system in Dallas is inspiring.

According to Morath, East Dallas can’t actually secede from DISD. The secession process is not only extremely difficult, but DISD’s bond covenants could be endangered, resulting in legal roadblocks. Future property tax revenue already has been committed to secure the district’s debt, so a huge swath of East Dallas homes and businesses couldn’t be lopped off without losing a big chunk of the already-pledged revenue. Likewise, because a White Rock ISD would be whiter than the district’s

overall demographics, re-segregation issues could cause additional legal hurdles. So, a White Rock ISD isn’t likely to happen.

But there are other options. DISD home rule could give East Dallas schools greater autonomy without their wholly seceding from the larger district. A governance change could allow for the creation of semi-autonomous local school boards within the larger DISD. Says Morath: “Beyond the overall board for the district, we could develop a system that created boards governing individual campuses or whole feeder patterns. Subject to achieving certain outcomes for students, and while being funded equitably from the district, these boards could operate their campuses with high levels of autonomy from the overall district, potentially increasing neighborhood cohesion and raising student outcomes, which could accommodate the needs of those promoting White Rock ISD while keeping the tax base together.”

So East Dallas could get more local control while still enjoying the benefits of being part of DISD (namely, the opportunity to send our kids to nationally ranked magnet schools and talented and gifted programs).

I’m not saying I’m sold on the home rule idea. I’ve got reservations. The devil is in the details, along with the governance structure that is ultimately proposed. But with the dismal outcomes at DISD and the potential upside to East Dallas, it’s a conversation worth having.

Last month, Angela Hunt wrote about how proposed ordinance changes could make it harder to create conservation districts in Dallas. Here’s what readers had to say:

“Every couple of years, city staff takes another stab at crippling historic preservation tools, and this is the latest attempt. If this passes, I don’t think you’ll ever see another CD in Dallas, and the existing CDs are at risk.”

“Conservation districts have proven to be a popular and effective neighborhood stabilization tool, but the proposed changes do not accomplish the stated objectives and do not address the actual needs of the ordinance.”

“This is disturbing, but not surprising. City staff consistently appears to be hostile to citizen participation, viewing them as meddlesome interlopers.” —Wylie H Dallas

“The super majority requirement makes sense because creation of a conservation district represents an enormous change to the status quo and one that could easily diminish the value of the properties covered by the overlay. Also, I don’t think your use of ‘agnostic’ is correct; I think the word you’re looking for is ‘ambivalent.’ ” —Spud Learn more and follow updates at lakewood. advocatemag.com or sign up for the free Lakewood News Digest at advocatemag.com/ newsletter.
