The power of pessimism

For a long time, a friend liked his job. Then he loved it. Now he hates it.

Same job. Same boss. Same company. Not the same attitude.

Times change, as we all know. People change. Companies change.

Attitudes change, too.

I thought about this while reading an article in The New Yorker magazine about a university professor who teaches a course on pessimism.

Yes, you read that correct: Students are paying to take a course studying pessimism.

This guy’s theory is that “philosophy begins with disappointment” of two kinds: “The end is near” and “Will this never end?”

Now if you are like a lot of people these days, your mind probably runs to the national political situation, which from both sides of the aisle appears to be pretty stuck in muck. But no, the professor says, that’s not his point.

“To him,” the article says, “it doesn’t matter which Administration is in charge. ‘There’s always something to complain about,’ he said. ‘There has always been a one percent, there’s always been discrimination of people because of their race.’ ’’

So even if politics is the convenient excuse for today’s malaise, to the extent you feel that way, it’s not really a core problem for most of us. We have plenty of other things to worry about and live for, with politics registering on that scale but not tipping it one way or the other.

So how do you go from loving something one day to hating it the next, when to the naked eye, not much has really changed? And to what extent does pessimism impact a life?

It’s a favorite question of mine, and not because I’m enrolling in that college

class, either. It’s because it reminds me of a day from my past.

On a long-ago cold, dreary and gray summer day, I went into a doctors’ office believing I had brain cancer. Thirty minutes later, I walked out of the office into hot, bright, blinding sunlight knowing I didn’t.

The day hadn’t changed in 30 minutes, nor had my health. But my attitude was radically different. To all other eyes, the heat and intensity of that typical Dallas summer day hadn’t changed one bit. But to my eyes, what had been dreary had become a bright light directly from heaven, guiding me down a gold-plated pathway.

Weeks and weeks of worry melted away in seconds, even though nothing had actually changed.

Perspective is really a sixth sense, although we don’t give it the credit it deserves. Aristotle’s five senses of the human body — sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch — send measurable information to our brains for processing.

But perspective isn’t measurable. We like and don’t like, believe and don’t believe, hate and don’t hate what we want, sometimes regardless of the truth of the matter.

We like our jobs; we’re sick of them. We adore our friends; we loathe them. We respect ourselves; we hate us.

As with so many things, there can be a fine line between the two.

The Casa Linda trees

“The developers just don’t understand that those trees are a part of the history of Casa Linda. The sidewalks don’t need to be any wider but they do need MORE trees! When the heat starts in June and lasts until the end of October people cannot sit outside.”

“And I bet there is a simple way to add some more spaces, pave the lot (because lord it needs it!) and save the trees. I feel certain we can all have our needs and desires met.”

“Why is tree removal always the first thing people want to do?”

“I’d rather have more parking spaces.”

“Removing trees to make it more pedestrian friendly? They are obviously removing them so that you can see the building logo for their largest tenant. The trees were planted long ago to provide a ‘point of interest’ for the pedestrian. But in 2018, they block the view for the driver at highway speeds.”

“Part of the reason I shop and walk around Casa Linda is that I can PARK in some shade and won’t fry when I get back into my car. All the sidewalks are exposed to the hot sun, whatever the season is. Why not make an area which can utilize the trees that exist? Also more narrow lanes for cars are really hard to deal with. Case in point: the Gaston Grand shopping center where you can barely maneuver and the toy car sized parking spots. Not cool at all. No one parks within the lines because they can’t get in and out of their cars if they do! Please don’t try to jack up your numbers at our expense. We love the human(e) elements of Casa Linda!”

A FAMILIAR VOICE

Neighbor Wade Goodwyn is the guy on national NPR with the soothing Texas accent and savvy storytelling

“This is Wade Goodwyn for NPR,” booms the baritone voice weaving the news of the day into engaging stories on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

A 2016 Adweek story detailed how fans on Twitter describe his voice.

“ ‘Texas timbre’ is what one person called it. ‘Nonplussed drawl’ wrote another. Still another opined: ‘His voice is like warm butter melting over barbecue’d sweet corn.’ ”

G oodwyn’s big break came in 1993 during the siege of the Branch Davidian complex near Waco, Texas. It was a viral story before there was such a thing. After an attempt at a raid by the FBI, many of the members of the religious sect barricaded themselves inside their complex with weapons while federal agents surrounded the buildings.

It was the biggest story in the country, and Goodwyn was in the thick of it. Then a freelance reporter for National Public

Wade Goodwyn writes, edits and records his NPR stories from his home studio in Forest Hills.

Radio, he sat in media briefings each day with reporters from the New York Times and Washington Post, trying to glean as much as he could from the more experienced journalists.

The media was denied access to the Davidians, meaning the reporters had to trust what the FBI was telling them about the situation – until Goodwyn caught a break.

Some of the Davidians had been released during the holdout, and Goodwyn heard that they were being housed in the YWCA in Waco. He was able to get the number to the hall phone and called, hoping for the best. Someone picked up and he asked for Rita Riddle, one of the women released from the compound.

Sure enough, Riddle came to the phone, and all of a sudden, Goodwyn was talking with a real live Branch Davidian. “I had gotten something no one else had,” he says.

Later, he would go on to speak with some of the mental health professionals who were working with the children who had been removed from the compound. The children colored pictures of their compound on fire and told the adults that their parents were dead.

After 51 days, the compound caught fire as the FBI inserted tear gas into the building, and 76 people died inside.

Goodwyn’s reporting launched him from freelance reporter to being on staff as a national correspondent at NPR, but he hadn’t always been a journalist. After abandoning a theater major at the University of Texas, he worked in politics on campaigns for Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett and later Ralph Nader, and then became an organizer in New York.

He worked with a group of 50-60 multi-ethnic interdenominational churches to help them advocate for better municipal services and improved living conditions. “I helped them learn how to use the power of the collective churches to hold the politicians accountable,” he says. “To push back against organized money.”

He lived in New York for seven years, but eventually wanted a new challenge. In 1991, he finagled his way

into a meeting with Robert Siegel, who hosted NPR’s “All Things Considered” for over 30 years, and Siegel connected him with the NPR office. “This is Wade Goodwyn, and he is interested in a job here,” he said.

NPR said yes, and that was that. Goodwyn, with no prior experience in journalism, was a reporter. “I knew I was never going to survive freelancing in New York City, so I moved back to Austin,” Goodwyn says.

Goodwyn didn’t know how to edit and produce radio stories, but his background in politics helped him understand how the world worked. He could see relationships, imbalances, and dynamics in society that made for great storytelling on important issues. “If you understand how power works, you understand a lot,” he says.

He was slow at first, but persevered and learned the skillset. “It took me a year and a half to figure out what I was doing,” he says.

His first published story in 1991 was about Houston housing project residents who were refusing to move out after the government decided the land was too valuable for federal housing. Goodwyn’s familiar timbre has been on the airwaves ever since, producing stories in and around Texas as a national correspondent for NPR.

Over the years, he has covered too many mass shootings, the Oklahoma

City bombing and numerous hurricane recoveries. He has been traveling monthly to MD Anderson in Houston for treatment of melanoma, but he still works regularly in his home studio in Forest Hills, where he lives with his wife and two teenage daughters.

The news business and NPR have changed a great deal since Goodwyn started. From an upstart news organization doing it’s best to stretch resources and cover what it could, NPR is now one of the most comprehensive and well-trusted news sources, according to Business Insider.

His voice can also be heard on PBS documentaries and a radio program for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (his “Jaap van Zweden” is impressive).

In an age when media has to fight to be trusted more than ever, Goodwyn is still focused on reporting news that matters. “If something is amiss, there are opportunities for your nose to work,” he says. “If there is something off, it makes you go check it out.”

PILLOW PRINCESS

“I fell in love with her instantly,” Katie Duncan says of Violet Olivia Frazer when she found her via Operation Kindness. Around her M-Street home, the basset hound is known as the pillow dancer for her penchant for pillow perching. But she isn’t just a dainty lady. One of her pastimes is romping around the ranch in Jacksboro County, and she can be found cruising Tietze Park many an evening with Duncan and Jason Frazer. She gets along well with their other dog Gus, an English shepherd, but is definitely the queen of her castle. Duncan embraces the situation. “She is a little pushy and a little bossy. But how can you deny her?”

Boating made simple, ownership not required

Neighbors’ new club gets you on the water anytime with concierge service and no hassle

REALITY: It’s summer. It’s Texas. It’s hot. SOLUTION: Find water. Find boats. Find fun. Hopping a boat sounds like the ticket, but boats are expensive, maintenance takes effort, and who has the time?

Longtime Lakewood resident Sue Wallace has the solution: Owner of Freedom Boat Club Texas on Lake Lewisville, Sue offers club members a fleet of high-end boats to access daily without the personal headache of cleaning, care, insurance or slip rentals.

Members simply show up, hop in a boat and take off.

Sue and her husband, John, along with partners in Austin and Houston, offer Freedom Boat Club members access to all kinds of boats. Bowriders and deck boats are excellent for wake boarding, skiing and tubing. Tri-toons are for cruising and relaxing.

The boating fun isn’t limited to Lake Lewisville, Austin and Houston, either. Through the Freedom Boat Club, members have access to more than 1,600 boats without additional charge at over 160 locations across the U.S., Canada, and now Europe. Boat selections include sailboats, fishing boats, deck boats, and now Jeanneau boats in Europe.

“Our members can run errands in the morning, spend an afternoon wake-boarding or tubing, and be home in time for supper,” Sue says.

No prior boating experience? No problem.

Sue and her crew help novices by providing local training in the classroom and on the water, all as part of the club membership.

We have sunset cruises for members and guests, a monthly wine club and a women’s diva club. Freedom Boat Club is not just for personal recreation, but also for making year-round business and social contacts, friendships with people who share an interest in boating and love being on the water” Sue says.

After a trip to the Philippines in 1996, Brad Rountree went to the cardiologist with chest pain and was told his heart may have been attacked by a virus. Nearly 20 years later, he held his heart through Baylor Hospital’s Heart to Heart program.

In 2015, he was diagnosed with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that causes the ventricle to stretch and thin, losing the ability to pump blood effectively.

“My heart had a shelf life,” Rountree says.

He needed a heart transplant and was put on the list. Three days later, he had a new heart.

Rountree knows how fortunate he is to have received a transplant which is both expensive and rare. “They said I had 24 hours to live,” he says. “But when I opened my eyes, I had blood coursing through every vessel in my body. I felt like I was 25 years old. ‘Is this going to go away?’ I thought. ‘Nope!’ ”

While overjoyed, he knew that receiving a transplant meant someone else had

died. His heart came from a 24-year-old man who died from brain tumors.

Rountree wrote a letter to the man’s family, describing his children, his job as a pastor at New Liberty Baptist Church in Garland and his role singing in the Dallas Symphony Chorus. “I wanted to thank them for being willing to give life,” he says.

me at ease,” Rountree says. “He wanted to know what my story was and what I thought.”

The heart looks more like a raw chicken breast than a pulsing blood pumper, but for many it provides a closure to a trying process and allows them to say goodbye to an essential part of themselves. “This is the heart that my mom and dad gave me,” Rountree says.

As a result, Rountree now volunteers at Baylor, talking with recent and future heart transplant patients.

Baylor’s Heart to Heart program offered another opportunity for emotional closure. The idea started when a former heart transplant patient approached Dr. William Roberts, Executive Director of Baylor Heart and Vascular Institute. “I understand, Dr. Roberts, that you have my heart,” the patient said.

Roberts invited the patient to the weekly cardiac pathology conference, where he could see his ticker. A tradition was born.

Rountree, too, listened to Roberts talk about his heart. Then he held it in his hands. “It was educational and put

Roberts is 85 years old and still busy as ever, penning articles, cracking jokes, running the institute while spreading the gospel of a pescatarian diet.

“It ends one very traumatic phase of life,” Roberts says. “It opens the door for this new normal phase, with vigor, enthusiasm and happiness returning. Patients have an added responsibility to take care of this new heart.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Baylor Hospital surgeons have performed 870 heart transplants since 1960 and complete about 60 per year. More than 100 patients have taken part in the Heart to Heart program.

NEWS AND NOTES

TREES PLEASE

When property owner Edens began taking out some plants in Casa Linda Plaza, neighbors became alarmed that a set of 70-year-old cedar elm trees would be killed. The removal is in the plans, but was put on hold when Edens agreed to meet with neighborhood leaders and see if a compromise could be reached. The redo of the complex includes planting more trees than currently exist, but neighbors want to save the trees that were originally part of the 1946 shopping center.

SEWAGE TSUNAMI

When a construction crew ruptured a pipe in Plano, over a million gallons of sewage spilled into White Rock Creek and started flowing toward White Rock Lake, over 10 miles away. Due to low water levels, the sewage did not get very far, but lake activities were canceled for a few days as a precaution. Less than a week later, authorities had sucked all of the sewage out of the creek.

COSTCO COMING?

After some sleuthing by the Dallas Morning News into soil testing records, it was discovered that Costco is doing testing on a former Sam’s Club site on Park Lane between Greenville and Shady Brook. This would be the grocery and retail giant’s second store in Dallas proper, and would be the closest for East Dallas shoppers.

FOOD NEWS

Maya’s Modern Mediterranean is slated to open in the northeast corner of Casa Linda in late August. The family-friendly fast casual restaurant will serve creamy Palestinian hummus, kabobs, shawarma, schnitzel and other fare in plate, wrap or bowl form. Don’t forget to dip strawberries or pretzels into their dessert hummus.

Utopia Food and Fitness is replacing the Little Lakewood Salon Boutique and Playhouse in Lakewood. Utopia will offer healthy meals that can be picked up à la carte or as part of a meal and workout program designed to help patrons lose weight and gain strength. Circuit workouts are performed onsite and take just 20 minutes.

The Food Network weighed in with its list of the best pizza in the U.S.’s 52 largest cities, and they named CaneRosso as the premier pizza in the ‘plex. What began as a mobile oven now has six locations in Dallas with others in Austin, Fort Worth and Houston. The Neapolitan treat is cooked in just 90 seconds at 900 degrees and is a favorite for East Dallasites.

The M-Streets was flanked by two openings this month: BurgerFi and Pizzeria Testa. Pizzeria Testa, which took the place of Graham Dodds’ Wayward Sons at 3525 Greenville Ave., opened last month. The Neapolitan style pizzeria hails from Frisco and will serve calzones, appetizers, salads and panuozzi, which is something

between a pizza, calzone and a sandwich.

BurgerFi replaced the Burger King at McMillan and Mockingbird. The fast-casual restaurant serves natural burgers and hot dogs free of steroids and antibiotics. The restaurant has a focus on recycled materials. It is part of a chain with locations all over the country, including several opening up in the DFW area. It can be found at 5456 E. Mockingbird Lane.

SCHOOL NEWS

Richard Kastl will be the executive director over the Northeast Secondary Network in Dallas ISD after leading Bryan Adams High School as principal for five years. Under Kastl’s leadership, Bryan Adams has gone from on the edge of reconstitution to earning six of seven distinctions from the Texas Education Agency, becoming a Leadership Academy and an Early College High School.

Ryan Bott will be the new principal at Bryan Adams High School after spending three years as an assistant principal at Molina High School in southwest Dallas. Dallas ISD administration introduced Bott in a letter to the Bryan Adams community. In 2015 he became an assistant principal at Molina High School, where he led a high achieving math department and Early College High School.

Woodrow Wilson High School’s new principal will be former Bryan Adams High School Assistant Principal Michael Moran. Moran will be the fifth principal in the last four school years, but has a history at the school when he taught and coached there for several years. He was an administrator at Bryan Adams for five years before returning to Woodrow.

POOL BLUES

The resort style aquatic center at SamuellGrand Park was set to open the first weekend of summer, but according to park staff, the latest construction timeline pushed the opening of the pool back to August 18. Dallas ISD starts school on August 20. Acquiring permits, studying the soil for contaminants, shipping equipment from overseas and making sure the new buildings’ stone matches the original buildings have all factored into the delay, but the Park Department is going to extend the pool season to allow neighbors to enjoy the pool into September.

DID YOU KNOW: Banh mi sandwiches developed in Vietnam because baguettes arrived in the 1800s when the country was part of French Indochina. In Vietnam, they are eaten for breakfast or a snack, but are considered too dry for lunch or dinner.

Walking into Cosmo’s is a step back in time. Low-slung furniture, barber chairs and translucent light-up tables are surrounded by walls that look like a Backgammon board, old movie posters, a Pac Man arcade game and TVs playing vintage movies.

But the funky East Dallas bar also features some of the best Vietnamese food in the area.

Jackson Tran is the chef behind the Vietnamese cuisine at Cosmo’s, serving up tasty bun (vermicelli noodles), banh mi (baguette sandwich) and pho (noodle soup) several nights a week.

The Bryan Adams High School graduate has come a long way. Tran’s parents were in the street food business in Vietnam, selling meals in a floating market in the Mekong Delta. After becoming boat people when they fled their home after the Vietnam War, the family headed to an Indonesian refugee camp while Tran’s mother was pregnant with him. Tran’s parents’ boat was attacked and robbed by Thai

pirates en route to Indonesia. They were rescued by Indonesian authorities, but lost all of their possessions.

Tran was born in Galang, a refugee camp in Indonesia, and he lived there until he was 2. Sponsored by a Baptist church in Connecticut, the family made it to Texas after a couple of New England winters taught them they were not cold weather people.

They moved to the Casa View area, opening Vietnam Restaurant in 1982. Tran worked at the restaurant growing up and learned to cook from his mother, Thua Tran. “I was peeling a lot of garlic cloves,” he says.

The restaurant closed in 2000. Tran thought about a career in theater (he was in Shakespeare in the Park and Kitchen Dog Theater productions), but he found his way back to the restaurant industry when he began bartending at Cosmo’s, which opened shortly after his parents’ restaurant closed.

Gerald Stogsdill, who owns the bar with his sister Debra Peña, had been a

regular at Vietnam Restaurant in Casa View and knew Tran since he was 14. Tran suggested he make some banh mi on Monday nights about eight years ago to attract customers earlier in the night. Word spread, the food began to sell out and the menu expanded.

Today, Tran and sous chef Trevor Ricci make pho and banh mi every evening. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays feature full menus that include spicy egg noodle soup, kimchi tater tots and oyster mushrooms along with banh mi, pho and bun. Pair it with a Lucky Buddha, an Asian rice lager, for best results. “I like having more options for the patrons,” he says. “These recipes are passed down from 1983 to now.”

A couple years ago, Cosmo’s upgraded the kitchen. Tran doesn’t have plans to go anywhere.

“I have been working here for 17 years, and I like that it’s a family-based business. I love the camaraderie of it all,” he says. “Lakewood means a lot to me.”

n Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2015, Zoe Hastings was on her way to church for a class about becoming a missionary. While returning a movie to a pharmacy at Garland and Peavy, she went missing. When she didn’t show up for her class, friends and family began to search for the Booker T. Washington theater student. After staying up all night trying to get hold of her, Hastings’ parents tracked her phone to Dixon Branch near Lochwood. When they arrived, a crowd had gathered and police were taping off the crime scene. Their worst nightmare came true. Her body and the family vehicle were found down a ravine. She had been sexually assaulted, stabbed and left in the creek bed.

How do parents respond to the loss none should have to experience? How does a best friend progress through life while remembering and honoring her lost companion? How does family support the parents while dealing with their own grief?

Nearly three years after Zoe’s death, the life she led and the impact she had on the people around her is evident each day, a living testament to a life cut too short.

How her murder shaped the lives around her
lakewood.advocatemag.com AUGUST 2018 31

Father Jim Hastings: Drawing

through pain

When Zoe died, Jim Hastings had been appointed as bishop of their church. He helped balance the budget, sat up front and taught during services, and he spent one night a week at the 500-member church helping others work through their problems.

“If I had nothing to do, it would have been terrible,” he says. “It took me out of what I was dealing with to know there are other things happening in the world.”

But he couldn’t continue helping others without finding a way to deal with his own emotions. After Zoe died, her father decided to draw every day. He is an art teacher at Merriman Park Elementary in Lake Highlands, and he has painted murals all over Dallas and illustrated several books.

He committed to drawing a picture of one of his family members every day. The other Hastings children are Hannah, 18, Tristan, 15, Ruby, 11, and Olive, 5.

Since then he has made more than 900 drawings of family members, all in simple ballpoint pen, but the emotional range and power of the drawings (which can be found on Instagram @jhastings40) is captivating.

He kept the practice up when his mother was diagnosed with cancer last year, sketching her each day until she died six weeks later. His father had died a few months before Zoe.

Drawing helped Jim realize how much he still has left, and it inspired him to make sure he uses his time productively.

“I see drawings, and they take me to a certain point in life,” he says. “They definitely helped me focus any anxiety, nervousness, worry or whatever. Life doesn’t stop. It was a way for me to keep moving forward. If I didn’t start making pictures I might stop completely.”

Mother Cheryl Hastings: Nursing through

recovery

Cheryl Hastings put her education on hold to have a family, and she became a nurse after the birth of her third child.

She works in labor and delivery at Parkland hospital and was on her way to getting a master’s degree to be a midwife when Zoe was murdered.

In her grief, Cheryl found a new purpose.

She saw an advertisement about the need for sexual assault nurse examiners. With additional training, nurses can examine women who’ve been sexually assaulted, preserving evidence for trial. They could even testify as expert witnesses.

For a mother whose daughter was sexually assaulted before she was murdered, this was an interesting choice. Cheryl says she even surprised herself a bit.

“I thought, ‘I don’t want to do that. Well maybe I do want to do that,’ ” she says.

The role is an important but undesirable one, requiring a balancing act of attention to detail, empathy and emotional distance.

“These people need someone who can help them in that step to recovery,” Cheryl says. “A little voice inside me said try it. They could use you.”

Uncle Nick Hastings: Comforted

by community

Nick Hastings saw Zoe almost weekly growing up. He says she was the first one to jump up and give you a hug but also the one to ask how you were doing, a maturity and selflessness beyond her years.

Through Sunday dinners and babysitting his children, Nick got to know Zoe as a young woman who was excited for life. Nick wanted his children to be around Zoe, knowing her authentic generosity of spirit would rub off on them.

Nick Hastings helped lead a search in the community to help find Zoe’s killer in 2015.
AUGUST

When his niece died, Nick was part of the team that canvassed the neighborhood in hopes of finding Zoe’s killer. He was astounded when 300 people showed up to help. Nick lives in the neighborhood as well, and he says he was shocked that something so violent could happen in what he considers a safe place, especially in broad daylight.

Nick says he became a bit more diligent about watching out, more skeptical, perhaps a little less trusting of the world around him. He had conversations with his kids about engaging strangers and being aware of their surroundings.

While it was a trying time, Nick also learned to experience life a bit more deeply.

“It’s not necessarily what you want to tell your kids, but we realized that life is short,” he says. “Enjoy as much time as you have with people.”

Nick feels that Zoe’s murder brought the family together and made them trust in their faith.

“Although we don’t understand everything, we have faith that God is there,” he says. “We spend a few more minutes on our knees thanking God for the time we have.”

Friend Beppy Gietema:

Holding on to Zoe

When Beppy Gietema graduated from Booker T., she and Zoe took a three-week trip to the Netherlands. The two friends listened to music and danced in the aisles of the plane while everyone was asleep, setting the tone for an eventful trip.

Spontaneity and joy drew Beppy to Zoe in the first place. They went to renaissance fairs and made movies together, listened to reggae on the way to Torchy’s Tacos and left googly eyes on hot sauce bottles.

Beppy, who attends the Savannah College of Art and Design, started getting calls and text messages the day Zoe went missing. Finally she got ahold of Zoe’s mom, who told her that her best friend was dead.

“The words will never leave me,” she says. “They are crisp in my mind.”

When she learned of Zoe’s death, Beppy cut off her ponytail, which she keeps in a box of letters and pictures of the two of them. Zoe’s death crushed Beppy’s spirit.

“She was the first person that I lost that I really loved,” she says. “I lost half of myself.”

Beppy is off at college, but moving on from the memory of her friend is not something she wants to do.

“I don’t know how you can move on. I don’t want to leave her in my past. I want to bring her with me wherever I can.”

CRIMINAL UPDATE: ANTONIO

COCHRAN, 37, was convicted of the murder of Zoe Hastings and sentenced to life in prison in January 2018. Though the Dallas County District Attorney sought the death penalty for capital murder, Cochran was ruled intellectually disabled, so he was convicted of a lesser charge of murder. Cochran will be eligible for parole in 30 years.

At The Magdalen House, women learn to live happy, joyous and free

AINSLEY DAVID WAS POWERLESS over alcohol and her life had become unmanageable. She hadn’t finished school at Appalachian State University in North Carolina and was working at a gas station. And drinking. A lot.

“Basically, my life was falling apart,” she says.

Her family had moved to Texas, but

came to visit and quickly realized that her situation was desperate. “We have to get you out of here,” they told her. Alcoholism ran in the family, and David’s father had asked if she wanted help when she was 18. “I was always the girl that got too crazy, and it was funny when I was younger,” she says.

“But I knew in the back of my mind,

there is really something different compared to my other friends.”

She moved to Texas and lived with her stepsister, but things didn’t improve right away.

She discovered Xanax and continued to drink. She thought that if pills were her major issue, alcohol would pale in comparison and she could keep drinking. But eventually she realized that alcohol was the addiction she needed to beat.

David tried sober living and other treatment options, but nothing seemed to stick. After another relapse, a friend recommended that she call The Magdalen House, a costfree recovery community for women in Little Forest Hills where neighborhood association president Patrick Blaydes says they have been

stellar neighbors.

She called, went through the screening process and moved in the next day. She started with the facility’s two-week social detox program, where women live in the home, do chores around the house, go to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and get sober.

David immediately felt comfortable and fell asleep after a hard night of drinking the day before. The next morning, one of her new housemates made her toast.

Maggie’s House, as it is known, has been in Little Forest Hills for 22 years and focuses on peer-to-peer recovery. There is staff at the house, but volunteers in the recovery community lead most of the workshops, classes and other programs. Clients find sponsors who help guide them through

the recovery process.

The women spend their days doing meditation and other exercises, such as drawing a stick with a positive word on it and being asked to use that word throughout the day. The program keeps the women engaged from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day.

Every week, there are 26 AA meetings, where women in social detox interact with women who are in a variety of stages of recovery, from one week out of the house to decades of sobriety. Last year, there were 19,000 visits from women for AA meetings at

the house, providing opportunities for peer-to-peer mentoring. They also can receive visits from family and their children during the two-week period.

Trader Joe’s and the North Texas Food Bank donate food for the women to cook for themselves. They come from all walks of life, creating a diverse recovery community.

“There is a trust there,” says executive Las Kroencke, who is a recovering alcoholic herself. “That is what makes it so attractive and why so many thousands of women flock here. I can just tell them what I did.”

Development manager Lauren McElroy, another former Maggie’s House client, says, “Alcoholism is the best thing that ever happened to me.

“I was confused for a long time and thought I wasn’t smart. There was shame, guilt, and I was disappointing people.”

Now I have a purpose every day. I can help people in a way that other people can’t.”

After finishing social detox, David kept coming to meetings and stayed connected to the community there. She didn’t realize that the people were volunteering to give time to the house. “I was overwhelmed by how much people wanted to help and give just because they loved it,” she says.

Over time, she learned about her disease and will be four years sober this summer. “I was confused for a long time and thought I wasn’t smart. There was shame, guilt, and I was disappointing people. Maggie’s House really taught me the truth,” she says. “I am not drinking because of things that happened. I learned that I drink because I am an alcoholic.”

She soon began volunteering to stay at the house to stay overnight and receive intake calls. Six months later she was hired as program director. She oversees the social detox program, manages staff and the volunteer peer recovery programs and schedules workshops and classes.

David enjoys the collaboration among the staff and seeing women get help at Maggie’s House, but she knows that some women still fall short after leaving. It isn’t a perfect place, but it has become a recovery home for thousands of women who have learned the essence of the recovery process. “At first I didn’t understand the importance of all the steps,” she says. “Now I can turn around and help the next person.”

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

The treasure hunter of East Dallas

John Gasperik turns garage sale finds into found-object folk art

perik happened to have his camera, shot a few photos of Led Zeppelin members and sold a shot to Buddy magazine for $5.

His career in photography took off. Soon he was shooting every concert in town, rubbing elbows with James Brown and Carl Perkins, and enjoying rock star perks. Then he was hired to shoot a guitar show. It was a pivotal moment.

Gasperik saw an opportunity. Guitars were expensive, but not at garage sales, which he had continued to visit in his search for records. He bought a couple of guitars cheap, turned around and sold them for a big profit and decided he had found his calling.

It didn’t take long for Gasperik to accumulate more than enough to open his shop of vintage guitars, records and memorabilia. “But I love buying, more than I love selling,” he says. What to do with all that stuff?

Elvis’s dressing room. A 1920’s speakeasy. Sun Records studio. The iconic red Pegasus. Sights to see? Sure, if you’re visiting the Old East Dallas home of neighbor John Gasperik. They’re all there.

Gasperik is founder and owner of Shake Rag, a cool little hole-in-the-wall vintage guitar/record shop on Live Oak, the one with the giant, gyrating Elvis figure beckoning at the door. It’s also the shop that’s closing by year’s end.

For decades, Gasperik has haunted estate and garage sales, buying then selling the results of his treasure hunts. But he’s also kept more than a couple of his finds, using them in creative and offbeat ways, in his home and in his found-object folk art.

It’s been a long and winding road for The World’s Biggest Elvis/Beatles Fan. As a kid growing up in 1950’s Sherman, Texas, he was instantly mesmerized the first time he heard Elvis’s “Hound Dog.” His little 45 RPM record in hand, he played it on

every neighbor’s turntable who would let him. He still has that 45, by the way.

He loved his Elvis, but a certain little band out of Liverpool changed his life. He began hitting garage sales, looking for cheap Beatles records to add to his growing collection. The lure of the hunt had taken hold.

In 1971, long-haired Gasperik hitchhiked to the big city of Dallas and headed to Lee Park, a hippie hangout back in the day. He slept in vacant buildings and got by selling pilfered newspapers and Tyler roses at the corner of Lemmon and Oak Lawn. He also dabbled in photography with his 35 mm camera and found that his camera, a relative rarity at the time, opened doors and earned him instant respect. “It was like a backstage pass,” recalls Gasperik. “VIP treatment.”

He eventually found steady work at a restaurant owned by the same person who owned the now-legendary Mother Blues club. At a party one night at the club, Gas-

Inspired by Dallas folk artist Willard “The Texas Kid” Watson, known for his yard art, Gasperik began to see his own home as canvas, a chance to express himself. Dozens of vintage metal signs line his fence, reflecting bygone ad campaigns for vodka, cigarettes and Coca-Cola. In one shaded area, Gasperik has staged a 1950’s style gas station tableau, complete with rusty gas pump, a Coke cooler, old red gas cans and an Elvis thermometer hanging on the wall.

A 40-foot shipping container runs along one side of the yard. On one end, he installed a giant pull-down screen for showing movies; a rainbow of vintage metal lawn chairs face the screen. On the other end of the container, he painted a replica of the front door and picture windows of Memphis’s Sun Records Studio, home of the first recordings of Elvis and Johnny Cash. A bright yellow, arc-shaped sign, identical to the actual Sun Records sign, perches above the faux door.

One man’s trash and all that, an old broken rocking horse left on the side of the road called to Gasperik, who brought it home, painted it red, fashioned some plywood wings, added a string of red lights, and voila, Pegasus on the rooftop of the shipping container.

Kennedy, UFOs/aliens, vintage radio microphones. Entire rooms have become works of art. One bedroom has been transformed into a 1920’s speakeasy, with an elaborate bar, Victrola, slot machine and Hollywood stills of gangsters.

Mosey down the hallway to rustle up some grub in Gasperik’s Western kitchen. Or is it the “Rusty Spur Cafe”? That’s what the weathered sign over the stove says. You’ll notice the mounted longhorns, a 1950’s era rodeo rug, portraits of cowboys and cowgirls, a rack of six-shooters (film props) and a black cowboy hat which Gasperik sheepishly admits he wore during his black-hat-and-long-black-duster phase.

The humble bathroom has not been left out of the fun. It is, according to Gasperik, Elvis’s dressing room. Elvis’s white jumpsuit hangs inside, his wide, studded belt is draped over the towel rack and a photo of a sudsy Elvis showering is positioned in his shower.

Gasperik’s folk art diorama of the Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show won him a blue ribbon at the State Fair. The kicker: It’s set in an old, gutted television. And then there’s the collection of hybrid musical instruments: a tiki figure with a guitar, a ukulele and guitar and a keyboard with an electric guitar. He’s also experimented with making guitars from a silverware box and a wine box.

His shop will close soon, but Gasperik is ready. “Stuff is cool, but it can be an anchor, too,” he says. “I just want to tinker and do what old men do.”

WORSHIP

How does prayer work?

We don’t know. But grandparenting gives us clues

No one knows how prayer works or why. Some wonder if it works at all, and if it does, what “works” means.

Jesus talked about prayer in simple teachings and parables and analogies. For instance, he emphasized the need to keep at it. “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you,” he said.

Each of the verbs should be translated as continuous action — keep on asking, seeking and knocking. He teased us with a parable about a man who disturbs the sleep of his neighbor and family in the middle of the night and a woman who nags an unjust judge until he gives in to get her off his back. He compared our heavenly Father’s desire to give us good things to an earthly father’s desire to do the same, only more so.

Here’s another image, this time from the world of grandparenting.

My 16-month-old grandson, Whit, is never without an implement in hand: spoon, stick, wooden backscratcher, plastic golf club or his personal favorite — the TV remote control. It’s more than just having the remote in his hand, though; he has caught on to the power of the remote to make things happen.

Children are copycats. They watch what we do and emulate it. They grow up by practicing being grownups. So, Whit not only holds the remote and waves it around, he points it at the TV and presses buttons, expecting something to happen the way it does when the adults in his life do the same.

Since he doesn’t know what buttons to push, I get tired of having to reset the TV after all his attempts to turn on Paw Patrol or The Golf Channel (really!) have thrown the TV menu into chaos. So, we took the batteries out of a remote and labeled it

“Whit.” He now can wave and point and click without consequence.

He is old enough to see that some power has left him. Amid his disappointment, he tried harder until I couldn’t stand it any longer. I got the working remote in hand and stood behind him as he clicked, operating the TV according to what I think he would have wanted, and certainly according to what I wanted for him. He was delighted to feel his powers return.

at it.

Prayer is a team effort. Each of us — often many of us — joins God in focusing on the changes we desire. We have limited power to achieve these things on our own. God seems to honor our efforts by coming behind us with greater power to achieve outcomes God was not likely to initiate without our prompting, but always according to God’s greater knowledge of the greater good.

No analogy is perfect. This still doesn’t account for why some fervent prayers seem to go unanswered. But if a grandfather can’t stand to disappoint a grandson’s efforts for change, how much more so a good God for God’s children?
