OPENING REMARKS

Last man standing

Life lessons we can learn from Willie

Want to know the difference between you, me and Willie Nelson? He can laugh about the future, and most of us can’t.

If you and I are talking about friends dying and our own mortality, we’ll figure out a way to make it depressing. Willie makes it funny, wry, insightful and entertaining all at the same time.

And let’s not forget his ability to add a catchy musical beat to the discussion, too: That’s another difference between you, me and Willie.

My only encounter with Willie happened at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth years ago. A bunch of us transplants from the North trekked west specifically to hear Willie tell us what Texas was all about. Willie strolled onto the stage and did a song or two, as I recall, then started but couldn’t remember the words to one of his standards, “Whiskey River”.

And that was about it. My recollection is that he didn’t finish the concert because he couldn’t — probably derailed then by the same things that have waylaid him periodically throughout his life (drugs, alcohol or a combo). I was upset at the time since we had made a long drive just to be disappointed. But time has tempered my willingness to be mad about stuff, and perhaps I have Willie to thank for that.

It has been hard not to follow Willie’s career since then because there’s no one more noticeable — he was pulling Kardashian media stunts before most of them were even born.

Willie braided hair. Willie bio-diesel. Willie pot busts. Willie T-shirts. Willie’s Reserve cannabis products. Willie headbands. Willie guitar string jewelry.

And, of course, his songs.

His latest hit, “Last Man Standing,” talks about friends and death:

“I don’t wanna be the last man standing Or wait a minute maybe I do If you don’t mind I’ll start a new line And decide after thinking it through…”

I like that song and that sentiment, and then I heard Willie talking about his career, his family, his life and the song on an NPR interview the other day. Doing the talking were Willie, his wife and two of his kids — all of them are together on Willie’s latest tour, with one son sounding eerily like his father on stage.

Part of the discussion revolved around dope-smoking, of course, because that’s what Willie does.

But I guess when you’re 85, famous

and contemplating the future, and when you look back on all that you’ve accomplished and screwed up, Willie sounds a lot more like you and me than I thought.

After everything he’s done over the years, he told NPR, he looks back on life in a way that our parents hopefully do and that those of us who are parents hopefully do, too.

“There’s nothing that makes a parent happier,” Willie says, “than having your kids up there doing things with you, especially if they’re good.”

Lilly Benitez breaks barriers and fosters community at Blade Craft Barber Academy Story by WILL MADDOX I Photos by DANNY FULGENCIO

Lilly Benitez created Blade Craft Barber Academy to be welcoming, stylish and empowering.

Lilly Benitez remembers her father shaving and combing his hair each morning, taking time to look and smell his best. Though she was just a little girl, shaving intrigued her. The scents of shaving cream and the feel of the rich lather were intoxicating.

But traditionally, being a barber is a man’s game. When Benitez, who lives in Junius Heights, went to barber school, there were only three women out of 100 students. But growing up with two brothers while working construction in the summers prepared Benitez to thrive in a male-dominated profession.

She worked in a variety of roles, including The Gent’s Place in Frisco, where she cut hair and provided shaves for clients. She quickly became popular, often booking six months out.

As a lifelong learner, she wanted to improve the educational experience for future barbers like herself. She felt that barber education was lacking, and barber schools were not welcoming places.

She set out to open a barber school, but didn’t have any formal business training. Leaning on friends and former clients, including now co-owner Thomas Shaw, she put together a business plan and searched for a location. “You feel like you are running a marathon blindfolded,” she says.

Eventually, a Deep Ellum locale materialized, and Benitez got to work planning the space. It included several

chairs, a classroom, private rooms for clients and even a shower. She says she needs to keep seeing clients or she will go crazy, and she only half-jokes that the shower is there in case everything goes wrong and she loses her home.

She did the general contracting on the space, checking in after seeing clients.

ment of her school, and it helped them adjust to life as both barbers and clients.

“I have really close friendships with veterans and police, and the PTSD they deal with causes struggle with adjusting to civilian life,” Benitez says. “We really help with that.”

Nicole McCarter is an instructor at Blade Craft and met Benitez while working at The Gents Place. “I enjoy watching and helping others grow in a lot of different areas of life, not just barbering,” she says. “I see a difference work ethic wise. They want to know exactly what to do and they will deliver it.”

Blade Craft hosts field trips for high school students, as they offer an alternative path to college for those who want to go into the field. Students from Arlington, Duncanville and McKinney have all made trips to the school since they opened.

She and her brother buffed the concrete floors themselves. Stash Design balances strong metal and wood finishes with quirky circular submarine windows and natural light. This year, the academy expanded from 10 chairs to 25.

Benitez fought to have the academy accept the G.I. Bill, where veterans could be educated as barbers when they leave the service. She wrote letters to congressmen without much success, but eventually the academy became eligible to take the G.I. Bill, and several veterans are in training and have graduated. She noticed how they thrived in the structured environ-

Benitez sees the barbershop as a third place for many, where they can relax and be themselves away from home and work. The academy offers haircuts, straight razor shaves and beard shaping for $30 each by the students, with guidance from their instructors.

The standards, culture and pride established at Blade Craft will head into the world as graduates open their own shops. “I love knowing that when people graduate they can fend for themselves,” she says. “That positivity and that standard is going into their neighborhood and community.”

RESCUE ME

Doodle Rock Rescue started right here in Lakewood

When Lakewood neighbors Jim Hines and Martin Wingerter adopted Rufus, he slept in an unnatural position, contorting his neck so that it curved around and rested by his feet. To his new owners, it looked like he was cramming his massive body into a confining cage that didn’t exist. It broke their hearts, but it wouldn’t be the end of the story for Rufus.

The beginning of Rufus’s journey to his forever home is not pretty. Two years ago, Dallas Animal Services picked him up on the side of Stemmons Freeway in rough condition. His matted hair was gone from much of his flea-ridden and emaciated body.

Rufus was brought into Lakewood neighbor Leigh Sendra’s boutique, The Shop 706. When a desirable breed is turned into the kill shelter, they call rescue groups to see if the animal can be fostered instead of staying in the shelter, and Sendra was known as a rescuer.

“My store immediately filled with a horrible smell of pure neglect,” Sendra says.

A decision had to be made quickly about Rufus. He was anemic and needed an expensive blood transfusion, so Hines and Wingerter made the call to have it done and save his life. Rufus was no longer their foster. He was now their pet.

When he was strong enough to come home, they gave what they thought was their golden doodle a bath. As the gold in his fur washed away, they realized they might have a different kind of doodle.

Rufus recovered quickly and was one of four dogs in the home. He is curious, playful and energetic, easygoing and great with other dogs and people. He loves to swim in the pool, forcing Hines and Wingerter to buy an industrial strength hair dryer to dry off his thick hair after his summer dips.

Wingerter and Hines’ adoption couldn’t have gone better, and Rufus knows how good he has it. “We are doing something good for a dog that is less fortunate,” Wingerter says. “Wherever we go he wants to go.”

Rufus is one of the many success stories for Sendra. She had been rescuing dogs for 12 years when she got a call in 2016 about a Corsicana labradoodle

named Leroy with a mass on his leg. She put out the word through rescue networks, and she was shocked to raise $12,000 dollars, enough for the surgery and then some. Leroy only lived six months longer, but the seed money was the beginning of Doodle Rock Rescue. In March of 2017, Doodle Rock became an official nonprofit, a completely volunteer-run organization coordinating foster homes and adoptions for doodles across Texas.

Doodles became popular because they are more intelligent, shed less and cause fewer allergies than many other dog breeds. So why would there need to be a rescue for such a trendy breed of dog?

According to Sendra, their strengths also make them difficult for owners who aren’t ready for an animal that needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation. They can become destructive, aggressive and territorial if not socialized and engaged properly, leading to a lot of owner surrenders and doodle dumping after the novelty wears off.

Doodle Rock travels far to rescue dogs and isn’t afraid to call out what they see as unacceptable conditions. They

uploaded a video to Facebook earlier this year depicting an animal shelter in Edinburg, Texas, and calling for the resignation of shelter staff. The video racked up over 50,000 views. A board member for the facility called the criticism “A hatchet job,” while other officials for the shelter told The Monitor the allegations were misinformed, and that the social media posts did not depict the nuances of the situation.

“The shelter is horrific – most dogs that go in don’t make it out,” Sendra says. “DDR has made it our mission to pull as many dogs out of South Texas as we can. Unfortunately, most come to us sick or injured.”

Fortunately for Doodle Rock, the popularity of doodles means most of the dogs she rescues are adopted quickly. With 2,000 applications on the waiting list, they can afford to have high standards for adoptive homes and fosters. They have adopted more than 300 dogs in the past year and a half.

“Rescues are the way to go,” Hines says. “There is something about the relationship with the dog. They understand that they have a cushy life compared to what they had before and are so thankful. They pay you back in a thousand licks and kisses and hugs.”

BANDANA BROS

Kendall Folse has no problem saying that golden retrievers Miles and Beau are her favorite children. The two goldens are half brothers that are six months apart and best friends. The pups helped inspire Geaux Fideaux, a dog bandana company that Kendall started with her husband Barry and daughter Lindsey. Named for former LSU football coach Les Miles, Miles is also part of a lifetime study to figure out why golden retriever life expectancy has dropped significantly since the 1970s. Catch Beau and Miles on Instagram with the hastag #brothersbyanothermother, or on Kendall’s screensaver (her grandson didn’t make the cut). “We often tell people, they are better than most people,” Kendall says.

SEE KEEGAN RUN

This blind beagle has no problem being part of the pack

It’s a warm Thursday afternoon, and Keegen the Beagle is enjoying his puppycino at a Casa Linda coffee shop. He sports a colorful sweater and matching sunglasses. He laps up the drink, (a cup of whipped cream topped with doggie treats) and sniffs around the table. Customers walk by and comment on how cute the pup is, complimenting his style and demeanor.

Even when he is no longer wearing the sunglasses, no one comments on what may be his most defining feature: Keegan doesn’t have eyes.

For owners Ashley Hutto and Tiffany Huffmaster, that is precisely the point. Keegan can get along in the world and with other dogs (they have eight rescued beagles at their house) just fine.

In 2015, Keegan was picked up wandering in Rockwall. The 3-yearold beagle had glaucoma, heartworms, tapeworms and sarcoptic mange, so he had very little fur. He was already blind, but pressure was building behind his eyes, and the only way to save his life was to remove them.

Hutto and Huffmaster opted for the

surgery and began to rehab him until he could be adopted elsewhere.

“It took us a week or two to fail,” Hutto says of their attempt to foster Keegan. They were won over by his sunny disposition and the quick way he adapted to life as a blind dog. He figured out how to use the doggie door in 24 hours, and he never needed the scented markers that are said to help blind dogs find their way outside or to their food.

“The thought of him having to adjust somewhere else seemed inappropriate,” Huffmaster says.

Hutto and Huffmaster have made it their mission to take on some of the more time-intensive beagles, many of which have age, health or behavior issues that make them a tough sell for forever homes. Keegan, Kouper, Khloe, Kash, Klaire, Kirtley, Abby and Tatum love to run in the yard and play their own brand of chase, Hutto says.

Keegan impresses his owners with his resilience, only rarely running into his beagle buddies while they are playing, and has learned to step up when he hears

“step” and to veer left or right when he hears “watch out” while playing in the backyard.

Hutto and Huffmaster aren’t the only ones who are impressed. Keegan has over 1,200 followers on Facebook, and has been featured on CBS 11. He corresponds with other beagles all over the world and always writes on his own branded stationery. He and his pack of beagles have calendars, Christmas pajama parties, Easter egg hunts, and he has taken good citizen classes that could help him become a therapy dog one day.

But for his owners, Keegan is all about fighting the stigma against what may be considered “unadoptable” dogs. Others who have or are looking at blind dogs have reached out to them, and they are happy to reassure others that it can be done.

“It’s not as big of a deal as it appears to be,” Huffmaster says. “It seems like it is dramatic, but they get around pretty well and use their other senses. He is pretty normal.”

Hutto agrees. “It doesn’t have to be a death sentence.”

BRINGING BEER BACK

Have ale on the trail at East Dallas’ White Rock Alehouse

White Rock Alehouse owners Greg Nixon and Dave Kirk’s first batch of home brew tasted so bad they decided it would be their only. So when the craft beer connoisseurs entered the brewery business, they enlisted an expert. Blake Morrison, previously of Cedar Creek Brewery and Whistle Post Brewing Co., quickly joined the team to concoct the perfect IPAs, ales, lagers and blondes. Now the spot offers eight of their own brews and 36 total on tap. Nixon and Kirk scoured the area for potential locations before making Gaston Avenue the brewery’s base. Sitting right along

the Santa Fe Trail and with an ample outdoor patio space, this dog-friendly brew-pub offers a dining option for those who want to sip a brew between bike rides or go on a double date.

What was home brewing like?

Morrison: These guys brought me a beer one day. They said, “You guys gotta try this. It’s a beer a guy home brewed. We don’t even know who it’s from. They dropped it off at the alehouse.” It had some carbonation, but I was like, “This is not good. This is actually pretty awful.” It just so happened that it was the only batch of home brew they ever made. It was about four years old. They

claimed that it tasted just as good as the day that they brewed it.

Kirk: Or just as bad. However you want to describe it.

So why do two guys with little experience open a brewery?

Kirk: Like a lot of people, we’re converts of the domestic beer world. We were at the point in our careers — late 40-something guys who wanted to do something differently. We wanted to start a new business from the ground up, so we chose craft beer. We thought East Dallas, Lake Highlands and the Lakewood area really needed something like this.

No project too small, too big, or too anything.

Nixon: Dave was in San Francisco for a couple years with work. Dallas was severely underserved compared to places like that. There was good potential to start a business and have it revolve around something we both love.

How do you name the Alehouse’s beer?

Nixon: Our goal is to have our name somewhat connected to the lake. Bonnie Barge (brown ale) was a social boat that floated on White Rock Lake 50 years ago. Even Bringin’ Mexi Back (Mexican-style lager) has the pump house in the background [of the label]. Big Thicket (blonde) is an area around the lake.

What are the rejects?

Morrison: So I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of the term “white-girl wasted.” When we put out our hefeweizen, we didn’t have a name for it yet. [One of our servers] was like, “What about “Wheat-girl wasted?”

First of all, no person that’s not a millennial is going to understand that.

Let’s talk about the menu.

Kirk: The menu, just like a lot things we’ve done, is collaborative. We give a lot of credit to our menu to the general manager, Brad Miller. The week before we opened the original chef we hired quit. Brad has a culinary background. He helped come up with the menu, execute it, get the doors open. It was very chaotic, but it turned out well. To this day, the majority of the items he came up with stay on the menu.

Nixon: Our current chef, Ben Zimmerer, came to us about two weeks in. He was at Rex’s Seafood down in Farmers Market. It’s become a little more seafood-focused.

This neighbor finds her purpose again
Hope A new S ERVING NEIGHBORHOOD PETS SINCE 1924 924 S Haskell Ave, Dallas, TX 75223 | 214.826.4166 | rutherfordvet.com

Hope was despondent. She had lost her purpose. All of her training, her hard work, what made her feel alive, were now gone.

She bummed around the house lazily while everyone else was at school or work, her previously engaged mind listless.

One day, she sprinted out of the house and jumped in the car uninvited, eager to catch a ride somewhere and just do something.

Soon Hope’s family found an opportunity for her to be back to her old self. Lakewood’s Therapeutic Movements is an occupational and physical therapy practice that works with a wide range of children, many of whom are on the autism spectrum. It is the perfect place for Hope’s skillset.

Dalton Pfiffner, Therapeutic Movements’ owner, was familiar with Hope’s impressive resume, and was excited about having some help around the office.

Hope is no ordinary employee. The black labradoodle is a highly capable autism service dog that received $18,000 worth of training to assist with kids who struggle to interact with the world.

Hope was so effective that she lost her job with her owners, the Golden family in Lakewood Hills. She worked with Gray Golden, who struggled leaving the house with his family; he would run away, throw himself on the ground and lash out at others.

Hope provided an anchor for Gray,

steadying him emotionally and physically. She was tethered to him and would stand firm when he lost control or tried to run. Eventually, Gray no longer needed Hope’s help to be out in the world, and Hope returned to being a pet.

The Goldens thought about returning her so that she could help another child, but she was a member of the family by that point. Pfiffner had been Gray’s therapist for years and one day asked if the family thought Hope could come by the clinic and aid other children there.

“She would love to go back to work,” Gray’s mother, Rhoni Golden, said.

Now Pfiffner picks up Hope a few days a week and takes her to the clinic, where she works with other children. The dog helps create distractions if children become upset, blowing in their faces or rolling on her back. She also accompanies children on outings into the community as Pfiffner develops their ability to interact with strangers and other life skills.

Hope provides a conversation piece for the children. They can talk to others about the dog rather

“Their fears and social anxiety are addressed,” says Pfiffner. “The animal is not judging you like people are.”

Campbell Polito is another child who does therapy with Pfiffner and Hope. His mother Sunny has seen the impact the pup can make on her child’s social skills.

“He is comfortable talking about the dog,” she says. “Hope is just phenomenal and facilitates his interaction in the community.”

As for Hope, the days of her doggie depression are over.

“Hope is definitely happier,” Rhoni Golden says. “She has her purpose back.”

PETS ON WHEELS

Food delivery for neighbors and their four-legged friends

Lula Gifford has lived in her East Dallas home for decades, but when the 84-year-old was hospitalized for a torn aorta, she says doctors thought she wouldn’t make it.

“I think they sent me home to die,” she says.

But she took a picture of her 8-yearold Shih Tzu mix Cooper with her to the hospital, and she says he helped her

pull through.

“I am going home,” she told the staff at the nursing home she was in after the hospital. “Cooper needs me more.”

Returning home presented other problems, though. Gifford has trouble getting around and doesn’t leave the house much. She receives food from Meals on Wheels each day as well. According to a survey of clients, 64 percent of Meals on Wheels recipients share their

lunches with their pets.

Lakewood neighbor Carol Becker was one of the Meals on Wheels volunteers who delivered food and visited with Gifford each month. Knowing how much Gifford cared for Cooper, she noticed that the pup was suffering and losing its hair. She called Meals on Wheels to see if there was anything they could do for Gifford’s pet. She was in luck.

Recognizing that pet ownership can

36 lakewood.advocatemag.com SEPTEMBER 2018

reduce stress, increase social interaction and alleviate loneliness, Meals on Wheels offers a pet-care program that offers a monthly delivery of everything pet owners need for the month including food, shampoo and treats.

The program also partners with veterinarians around Dallas to provide medical care and transportation for pets that need treatment. The SPCA and Vickery Place Animal Hospital chipped in to treat a fungal infection Cooper had, and his hair grew back.

“I was upset about the way he looked,” says Gifford, who couldn’t afford to treat him. “I cried when she told me about the deal for pets.”

Gifford grew up in East Dallas and was raised with her sister at the Juliette Fowler Homes, an orphanage near Woodrow Wilson High School. Her sister was her only close family member throughout her youth, and when she died this winter, Gifford needed social connection more than ever.

Thanks to Cooper, she has just that. Though he isn’t much of a cuddler, he understands Gifford and sticks by her side all day. “He is such a monkey; he does the funniest things,” Gifford says. “I will be happy with my boy.”

DALLAS’ CAT LADY

A neighbor who embraces her role

At an undisclosed parking lot in East Dallas, a feral cat colony is built against the back fence. It looks like a miniature tent city, with mismatched structures running end to end, covered in deteriorating tarps. An igloo doghouse sits next to a wooden structure with shingles, and straw lines the ground to provide insulation and absorb moisture.

Dotted around the parking lot, creeping behind fences or even lounging out in the open are a few of the more than 10 cats who make up the colony. Grey and orange tabbies and a couple that don’t fit in any category know the food is coming. While they aren’t scared of humans, they don’t have any desire to cuddle up either.

Juliet seems to love the camera, though her breed can’t be placed. Morris is an orange tabby that has never been

caught. He is wily and tough, exactly what you would expect in a street cat.

The City of Dallas estimates that there are 350,000 homeless, wild or untamed cats in our city. Each morning, a network of volunteers fans out across East Dallas to feed and water feline friends, who are often dumped or abandoned in locations all around town. If they find a new cat, they will attempt to trap it and have it fixed before releasing or finding a home

PHILANTHROPY FOCUS

for it. Volunteers can register with the city to be cat colony managers, who are in charge if a cat gets sick or needs to go to the vet.

These volunteers are part of a network of feline caregivers in Dallas, one of whom is Leigh Schlenger, the Dallas Cat Lady. Since 2006, the Casa View neighbor has been organizing volunteers around Dallas to trap, fix, find foster homes and adopt out cats

that will do well in a forever home. After volunteering and working for another cat rescue group, Dallas Cat Lady became an official nonprofit in 2010.

Everyone involved is a volunteer (including Schlenger, who has a full time job), but she helps get neighbors organized to do the tough and often thankless work ahead of them.

According to Schlenger, a feral cat is one who has been left behind and has learned to live off the land while losing its socialization to humans. “It is more like having raccoons, possums or squirrels,” she says. Despite the lack of socialization, her volunteers do their best to trap the feral cats so they can be fixed, reducing future generations of strays.

Last year, her volunteers fixed close to 1,200 cats. Schlenger has eight cats herself, though she tends to take on the special needs kitties that might not get picked up for adoption.

Schlenger is well known in the cat

rescue scene. She once received a call about a cat and found out that the 311 operator had been giving out her number for cat queries. “Everybody has my phone number,” she says. “We just work

with as many as we are able to.”

You can adopt the Dallas Cat Lady’s cats at the Casa Linda Petco. Learn more at dallascatlady.org.

fter 11 years leading Lake Highlands High School, former principal Bob Iden thought he’d reinvent himself as a real estate agent in 2008. But the housing market crashed, and he missed the camaraderie of the school system. Now Iden, who grew up in the neighborhood, is a coach and college career advisor at Bishop Lynch High School.

What are your favorite memories during your tenure as teacher, coach or principal?

Winning the state championship in 1981 was huge. That was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity for me and all the other coaches. We talked about how that group of kids from Forest Meadow Junior High and Lake Highlands Junior High were just a tour de force. When I was principal, I think the national recognitions we got, like the Blue Ribbon School, AVID National Demonstration School. We were listed as one of the top high schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

If you were in another field, what would it be?

I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I tried. I had the real

estate venture. I think if I could retire today and do something else, it would be to work with my wife [at Balfour Publishing] in the yearbook, cap and gown and graduation ring business.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Probably my indirect connection to Shakespeare. One of my ancestors, Alexander Iden, was a noble. This is in “King Henry the XI, Part II” one of Shakespeare’s lesser plays. Alexander Iden slayed the rebel Jack Cade, and he was knighted for it. A guy named by Ben Iden Payne was a famous Shakespearean professor at the University of Texas. There’s a theater named after him.

My mom has been diagnosed with dementia and our family is planning for her care. Why should we consider moving her to a memory care community?

A: There are many reasons. Living in a community offers socialization as well as physical care. Being around other people, taking a class, attending a performance – these are activities that have significant physical, social, spiritual and emotional benefits for the person living with dementia.

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

The piano man

When you want to announce yourself at the Berndt house, play a little tune

What is 4 feet tall, bright red, has 88 keys and alerts you to visitors? Your doorbell, of course. But only if you’re Vincent Berndt.

More than a few folks driving through Vickery Place on their way to Sprouts for vitamins or to Knox-Henderson for libations, have done a double take when they pass by Berndt’s house. There it sits on his porch: an old upright piano, painted bright red, with “DOORBELL” emblazoned across the front board, just above the pedals.

Born in Gainesville, Berndt and his family moved often for his father’s work in defense systems, eventually settling down in the Dallas area. When he graduated from high school, he picked up a guitar and fell in love with it. “Music is my passion,” he says. “I get lost while playing and always have.” Admitting that he’s always had a “rebellious streak,” Berndt tried college, feeding his creative soul with courses at the University of Texas at Arlington in theater and graphic arts before he decided to work full-time tending bar.

Around the same time, he did a little acting. “I loved doing Shakespeare.” He experimented with visual art, creating modern works filled with geometric shapes and even a few Jackson Pollack-inspired splatter pieces. But music kept calling. He kept strumming his guitar and attempted to put together bands, but they never quite gelled.

That is, until 2000. He formed his first band and began building a network of musicians. Enter the piano. When a fellow musician announced that he would relocate and didn’t want the hassle of moving his old piano, he gave it to Johnny Bone, singer in Berndt’s band. “We rescued it from his apartment on

Wycliff,” Berndt recalls. Because Bone had no room for it, they moved it to a back room in Berndt’s house.

Not too long afterward, Bone decided to move back to Georgia. Bone also happened to owe Berndt some money. Berndt laughs as he remembers the deal

have sat in a classroom, perhaps a church school. Those 88 keys might well have produced “Amazing Grace,” “Row Row Row Your Boat,” and, later, rock and roll at the hands of Berndt and friends who are currently making the rounds as rock and roll band !diot Savant.

Berndt intended to rehab the piano, restore it to its former glory and brush up his keyboard skills. That plan was aborted, however, when he discovered that repairing merely the missing and broken ivory on the keys would cost more than $1,000.

his friend Johnny made with him. Using his best Cajun accent to mimic the New Orleans-raised Bone, Berndt quotes him: “Hey, bro, I’m gonna leave you that piano since I owe you $400.”

If only the piano could talk. Lore has it, according to Berndt, that the piano made a trip or two overseas, to Switzerland. The 1920’s era Remington brand upright built in Indiana was also said to

After a while, Berndt moved the piano from the back room and out to the front porch because he needed the space. There it sat for a while, until one day when Berndt’s artist friend, Darrell Hargrave, came by for a visit. “You know, I’ve always wanted to do a large piece like that,” mused Hargrave about the piano.

“I turned it over to Darrell since he’s the artist,” Berndt says. But Berndt had one unwavering stipulation: “I told him I want DOORBELL on it.”

“My original vision,” remembers Hargrave, “was Gucci pink on pink with white letters.” Unhappy with the result,

“I don’t think creativity is promoted enough. If that’s something I can do for the neighborhood kids, that’s cool.”

Vincent Berndt’s doorbell has a story to tell (Photo by Danny Fulgencio).

Hargrave painted over it with bright red, plus a touch of blue on the fall board — the hinged keyboard cover. And, of course, he finished it off with giant letters on the front board: “DOORBELL.”

Hargrave had always counted on Berndt to name his works of art. Berndt christened it “Doorbell.”

Berndt loved the piano’s new life as art. It made him happy. But it was not until he was out of the country a few weeks later that he discovered the unusual porch piece made his neighbors happy, too. While in Italy on a bucket-list trip, a friend sent him a screenshot from the Next Door app. There on the site was a photo of Doorbell with this comment: “Kudos to my Vickery Place neighbor for giving me a smile on my morning walk.”

Since then, neighbors have told him how much they enjoy seeing it. Even door-to-door solicitors get a kick out of it. Berndt remembers one young man who eventually showed up at his house after working the neighborhood. “He said he’d been wanting to play it all day.”

Has anyone played any lovely melodies on it?

“It’s really not playable, “ Berndt says. “I’d love to hear ‘Fur Elise’ on it, but it’s kind of hard to play when the notes stick. Mostly, I hear ‘Chopsticks.’ ”

As you might expect, the neighborhood kids can’t resist the temptation to hammer away on it. But Berndt is philosophical about it. “That’s what it’s there for. And if they want to bang on it, isn’t that a positive thing? I don’t think creativity is promoted enough. If that’s something I can do for the neighborhood kids, that’s cool.”

Berndt’s plans for Doorbell? For now, seal it to protect the paint. Longterm, he can’t see ever parting with it. He talks of perhaps moving in a year or two, but Doorbell goes with him. “I can just imagine prospective buyers asking if Doorbell stays,” he grins. His answer would be a resounding “no.”

“The piano is an expression of my personality: my sense of humor, my passion for music, my quirkiness, and that little rebellious streak I’ve got.”

Schools shouldn’t be a commodity

School is back in session, along with all the promises and perils that go with it.

The news last month rightly trumpeted the generosity of basketball star LeBron James. James announced he was fully funding a public school for “at-risk” kids in his hometown of Akron, Ohio — an “I Promise School.”

It’s hard to characterize the school as a traditional neighborhood school or a charter school as it seems somewhat a hybrid. But all children will have everything they need to succeed: books, bikes, uniforms, mentors, nutrition and the promise of tuition-free college at the University of Akron after high school graduation. GED classes and job placement will be available to their parents, too.

To James’s credit, he did not start a private school; he worked with the Akron public school district to devise the plan.

Wonderful. Now, these questions come to my mind as a religious person: Why should it take private philanthropy to create all the conditions for successful public education? Are not all children equally worthy of a quality education?

We have never seriously committed ourselves to providing a public education system that would give equal opportunity to all students to learn and achieve. Race is part of the reason. When we were forced by the courts to desegregate public schools, we never fully integrated them. Then whites fled for the suburbs so we could segregate by economic choice, supported by redlining housing policies that kept blacks from coming into the neighborhood.

Nowadays, we are doubling down on the dumbing down strategy by starving public schools of adequate state funding; arguing for private school voucher programs, which would cherry-pick minority children as trophies to prove the success of the model; and blaming those who are left in the under-resourced neighborhood schools for their moral failure in achievement.

The narrative of futility is changing,

however. Dallas Independent School District is a model of innovation among urban districts. It’s doing a lot with a little. (And unless the state school funding system is changed in the next legislative session, they will be doing with a lot less due to the “Robin Hood” recapture system.)

LeBron James’s “I Promise School” plan not only provides quality teachers and administrators (all of whom were willing to work for less to get to work in this fully resourced environment), but it also provides the wraparound services necessary to produce the best chance of excellent outcomes. We have it backwards in most school districts: Wealthy schools that are filled with predominantly white students who come from successful families across generations are the best resourced; those schools that need the most help to compensate for generations that were either denied access to quality education or provided substandard education are the least resourced.

What outcomes should we expect from this strategy? Is it spiritually defensible for religious people to treat education as a commodity that some can afford more than others?

James’s gift has given some children palpable hope for their future. Every child deserves the same.

Home, sweet East Dallas

Lunching in Lakewood. Dining and drinking on Lower Greenville. Scrambling for candy at the Woodrow homecoming parade. Catching a show at the Granada. Playing tennis at Samuell-Grand. Poll greeting at Mata Montessori. Running into friends at Matt’s. Admiring the scenery at White Rock Lake — which includes a passerby with a snake wrapped around his shoulders, a couple doling out free lemonade and salvation, and two men partaking in Medieval sword fighting.

The list of everything I love about East Dallas is endless. So much so that I’m loath to admit how long it took me to get here.

I was born in India, bred in Chicago and courted by a Texan. John moved from Dallas to Chicago in late 1999 — for me. We were young and in love and did everything the Windy City offered — Cubs games, pubs, museums, restaurants, festivals, beaches and bars. But no matter how much fun it all was, John longed for Texas.

It was the grueling, sunless, frigid days between October and April that finally did him in. After his fourth Chicago winter, he was done. I didn’t particularly enjoy the winters either. I’ve always maintained that my genetic makeup is not conducive to that sort of climate. That final winter, in the middle of a flu-induced delirium, I spontaneously decided I was done, too.

John introduced me to the M Streets back when we were long-distance dating by taking me to Café Izmir on one of our first dates. We drank margaritas on the patio at Gloria’s and drove through the

cutest neighborhood I’d ever seen. Fast forward to 2003, and with a 9-month-old in tow, we traded our 1,200-square-foot townhome in Wrigleyville for a lovely, updated M Streets cottage complete with a backhouse and a yard.

Transitions are tough. I left family and friends and knew virtually no one in Dallas. We arrived in the middle of July and it was hot, like Africa hot. Our neighbors were welcoming and Southern hospitality was on full display, save for

then-named Stonewall Jackson Elementary, and it changed our lives. It was here where we found lifelong friends — the ones you go on vacation with and put down as your emergency contacts. It was here where I witnessed public school parents work hard to support their campuses. It was here where I discovered my purpose. It was East Dallas and the since renamed Mockingbird Elementary that opened my mind and unlocked my heart. We were finally settling in.

And then we moved. Again. And again. First to Seattle and then to Bangalore, India.

In early 2013, near the end of our twoyear expat stint, John made me an offer: It was up to me where we landed for good. He put money down that I’d pick Chicago or Singapore. To his disbelief, I blurted out, “Dallas.”

the woman three doors down who asked if I was our son’s nanny. (“Uh, no. I would be the mother.”)

Our stay was unintentionally short. The following year, John accepted an opportunity in Sydney, Australia. We returned to Dallas in April 2008 — now a family of four, perfectly timing our re-entry with the near-collapse of the U.S. economy. Many of the friends we had made during our original stay moved while we were away. I was lonely.

I didn’t know it at the time, but it was all about to get a whole lot better. We enrolled our son in kindergarten at

I often reflect on what made me answer so emphatically and without hesitation. It wasn’t the Arts District or Klyde Warren Park or the Katy Trail or Cool Thursdays at the Arboretum that drew me back. It was the people with whom we shared these experiences. We created connections that I wanted to strengthen.

It took me a decade to figure out that it’s not the city in which you live; it’s the community you create. My community was created here in East Dallas. I am home.

And I’m never moving again.

The Advocate is thrilled to welcome neighborhood activist Mita Havlick as our new “Last Word” columnist. Find her commentary regularly in the back pages of our print edition and online at lakewood.advocatemag.com.

SWIMMERTIME FUN

Water lovers all over East Dallas were crushed when they found out that the resort-style aquatic center headed to Samuell-Grand wouldn’t be open until the end of summer, but now we can enjoy water slides, diving boards, a lazy river, lily pad bridges and more. The center opened on August 18 and will be open on weekends through the end of September, according to Park Board Member Jesse Moreno. The best part – it will be free this summer. Moreno was disappointed the project was not completed on time, but dozens of workers were hard at work in early August putting on the finishing touches to what will be a significant upgrade to the city’s pools.

TEXAS STOP SIGN

Dairy Queen has announced plans to open a restaurant in the area. DQ’s “coming soon” sign went up on the shuttered Chicken Express store at 6445 Eastridge next to the Skillman Home Depot, and renovation is expected to begin soon. The Chicken Express opened in 2015, but the stand-alone store hardly did enough business to leave oil spots on the parking lot. Perhaps a Dairy Queen in that location will draw the attention of contractors purchasing construction supplies next door and residents nearby.

ALBERTSON’S FUTURE

The space has been a grocery store for decades, and was most recently a Minyard Sun Fresh Market. Minyard’s first store was in East Dallas on Lindsley Avenue and opened in 1932, and the Lakewood Whole Foods used to be a Minyard Food Store as well. Lakewood neighbors Jeffrey and Annette Patterson submitted the question about the future of the location to Dallas Morning News’ Curious Texas. Ward Kampf, the president of prperty owners Northwood Retail, told the News the space will not be a grocery store but instead will be sliced up for two or three other tenants. He said that the tenants might be known within the next month.

NOTES

JIMMY’S AND THE MUSERS

The Musers, Dallas’ favorite sports morning hosts, broadcasted from Jimmy’s Food Store last month. The Ticket’s Gordon Keith interviewed patrons, employees and even one guy’s mom. He asked a woman one too many personal questions about her significant other and an aspiring broadcaster employee gave him a couple hot takes about Cowboys safety Jeff Heath. George Dunham and Craig Miller discussed Terrence Williams’s refusal to talk about how much the Cowboys would miss future Hall of Famer Jason Witten and the profane and possibly insane coach from the latest season of Netflix’s “Last Chance U,” a documentary series about a junior college football team in Kansas.

BUS STOP TRAGEDY

Adding to the number of traffic-related

deaths on Buckner, a woman was killed while waiting at bus stop near Buckner and Peavy last month, Fox 4 reports. A car collided with the bus stop structure around 2 p.m. while the woman sat inside. The vehicle that collided with the bus stop ended up 50 yards down the street. The woman was 48-year-old Darleen Pollard, who died at the scene. The driver was a 73-year-old man who has not been identified. He was taken to the hospital and told police he had congestive heart failure.

HOMELESS AT SAMUELL-GRAND?

The city was all in a huff after the Office of Homeless Solutions proposed a policy to reduce homelessness in Dallas that would involve making some of the city’s recreation centers temporary homeless shelters. Dallas Park Board member Jesse Moreno says that Samuell-Grand

Recreation Center qualified as a location, but the idea is practically dead on arrival at City Council.

In addition to numerous City Council members being strongly against the idea, Moreno highlighted numerous reasons why he thought it would be a poor plan.He notes that the recreation centers are full of children throughout the year, and that the current staff are not trained to handle the possible medical emergencies or security concerns that may occur if those experiencing homelessness were living there. “I think it’s a horrible idea to mix a homeless population with kids who are as young as five or six years old,” he says. In addition, the recreation centers are booked with activities from early in the morning until night, making coordinating the needs of a homeless shelter even more difficult. “Logistically it would be a nightmare,” he says.
